11 best summer treks in Himachal Pradesh easy to challenging

Himachal Pradesh is known as a trekker’s paradise for good reason. There’s something for everyone here. New to trekking? The two-day Triund Trek from Dharamshala is a great place to start. Have kids in tow? With spacious camps, the Tirthan Valley hike from Manali is ideal for families. Been there, done that and looking for a new challenge? The Parang-La trek to Lahaul will test your strength at every turn, but the views are equally rewarding. We spoke to three adventure travel companies—Aquaterra, Exsul Travel and India Hikes—to get their intel on some of the best summer hikes in Himachal Pradesh. Here’s the list.

Treks in Himachal Pradesh

Bara Bhangal trek. Photo: Aquaterra

Duration: 13 days; Level: Demanding; Highest point: 16,000ft; Starting point: Manali Look forward to campsites in meadows of wildflowers, lakes and sheep on this trek. Bara Bhangal is a secluded village in the Kangra district, and the trail—also known as the Shephard’s Trek—takes you through the beautiful Kalihani and Thamsar passes, traversing from Manali to Bir-Billing. The altitude is not the challenge here, all the campsites sit below 4,000m. But it’s constant scaling and descending that make the trek strenuous. The summer months of June-September are the only times you can go on this trek, as Bara-Bhangal receives heavy snow and is cut off during the winter. Book via Aquaterra.

Deo Tibba trek

Deo Tibba in Manali.

Deo Tibba in Manali.

Duration: 6-8days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 14,000ft; Starting point: Jagatsukh (10km from Manali)

The Deo Tibba trek is a sight for sore eyes, especially during the months of May-June. The trek trails through dense forests of pine, spruce, oak and silver birches that don a bright green shade this time of the year. While you catch your breath through the moderately-challenging trail, stop and stare at the snow-capped mountains of Deo Tibba (6001m), Norbu Peak (5226m) and Jagatsukh Peak (5050m). At the foot of the Deo Tibba, you’ll be greeted by the emerald waters of the Chotta Chandratal Lake, and suddenly all the huffing and puffing will seem worth it. Book via Aquaterra .

Parang-La trek

On the way to Parang La pass from Ladakh.

On the way to Parang La pass from Ladakh.

Duration: 16 days; Level: Challenging; Highest point: 18,400ft; Starting point: Kibber

Wildlife enthusiasts, this trek is for you. The Parang La trail traces the trade route between Spiti and Tibet and begins from the meadows of Kibber, the ground for Spiti horses and elusive snow leopards. It descends the Kibber gorge and steeps the pass of Parang La, the source of the Pare Chu River, which flows into Tibet and then re-enters India. The trail passes by Rupshu Valley, which teems with kiangs (Tibetan wild asses). On the last leg of the journey, keep your eyes peeled for bar-headed geese, black-necked cranes and Brahminy ducks, as you camp by the beautiful Tso Moriri. Book via Aquaterra

High in the Himalayas: a drive across terrains and cultures

Arundhati Ail

Duration: 6 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 14,000ft; Starting point: Jobra (one-hour drive from Manali)

Himachal Pradesh has its very own Valley of Flowers. Around mid-July, the Kullu Valley is bathed in wildflowers. Getting to the pass is no easy task, though. After wading through a bed of flowers, you will need to scale many ledges, which may make you believe you’re close to the pass, but you never really know until you get there. The views make up for it—while one side of the pass overlooks lush landscapes, the other shows you Lahaul’s rugged terrain. July to September is the best time to go, but if you’re ready to brave the cold, June is a great time too. From day three on, you’ll trudge your way through snowy terrains until you reach Lahaul. Tirthan Valley

Tirthan Valley Himachal Pradesh

Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Duration: 4-6 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 10,000ft; Starting point: Manali

If you’re a rookie or have kids above the age of seven in tow, the Tirthan Valley Trek is a great place to start. The trekking distances are short and the camp in the Sajwar region offers creature comforts, with spacious tents and washrooms. The months of June to September are the best time to visit. The meadows are lush and the skies clear-blue around this time of the year. The trail follows the Great Himalayan National Park, home to blue sheep, musk deer and the Himalayan tar. Bhrigu Lake

Duration: 4 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 4,287m; Starting point: Gulaba (24km from Manali)

On most treks, reaching a sprawling meadow may take at least a day or two of arduous hiking. But on this trek, look forward to a carpet of green within 10 minutes of your journey. These meadows are at their lushest from July to September. Horses and sheep are ambling around, and the scenery is framed by the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. Don’t let the duration of the trek misguide you. The trail is still daunting, as it takes you to an altitude of 14,000ft, to Bhrigu Lake which mirrors the snow-capped mountains around you. Book via India Hikes.

The hike to Rupin Pass. Photo India Hikes

The hike to Rupin Pass. Photo: India Hikes

Duration: 7 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 14,000ft; Starting point: Jiskun (10 hours from Shimla)

At every turn, there’s a new vista to see. The Rupin Pass trek is full of surprises. About 20 minutes into the trail, you can picnic by or dip your toes in the Rupin River, which cascades down the Dhauladhar Range for over 2,000ft to form a waterfall. Trekkers camp by this site for two days and then carry on to discover snowfields and glacial valleys, even in the months of May and June. The trek is not for the faint-hearted, though. The pass crossing is a 200-metre steep climb through rocky, snow-flanked paths. But the trail descends to a campsite surrounded by grasslands and a stream framed by snow-capped peaks. It’s the perfect place to catch your breath. Book via India Hikes.

Triund Trek

Duration: 2 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 9,300ft; Starting point: Dharamkot

The Triund Trek is perfect for a short weekend getaway in the Himalayas. Ir can be done in 4-6 hours but camp the night to really enjoy the views of Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar range. While the trail is short, it’s steep. But every now and then, you will be able to catch your breath during easy, flat trails through rhododendron, pine and coniferous forests. The highlight of the trek is the beautiful sunsets that paint Himachal’s skies and the starry nights.

Duration: 45 minutes; Level: Easy; Highest point: 5,900ft; Starting point: Bir

This one’s an easy, laidback trek for beginners. Start your day with a cup of coffee at June 16 Cafe, and trace parachutes gliding in the skies as you walk past Bir’s forests. Quench your thirst at the natural springs in Bari and ascend the centuries-old slate stairs laid out by the early settlers of Bara Bhangal. Visit the local temple, and picnic in the beautiful oak forests while enjoying the views of the Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar mountains. Book via Exsul Travel .

The Hostan Hike

The hike to Hostan

The hike to Hostan

Duration: 3-5 hours; Level: Moderate to Difficult; Highest Point: 6,800ft; Starting point: Palampur

It may not look like this path is well-tread, but shepherds herd hundreds of goats and sheep over this treacherous trail to get them to grazing lands in the upper reaches of the Himalayas. It’s the same shepherd-turned-guides who lead you to the top. The landscapes change as you climb, from pine and cedar slopes to rock shrubbery. You will learn about plants like basunti that help heal wounds and how local shepherds make a spicy chutney from rhododendrons. Your views at 6,800ft will comprise snow-capped mountains and mountain homes. Sit back on the lush grass and enjoy the vistas along with breakfast. Book via Exsul Travel .

Husky Walks in Manali

The view from Majhach village

The view from Majhach village

Duration: 3-5 hours; Level: Intermediate; Highest Point: 5,900ft ; Starting point: Manali

What’s better than a hike along Manali’s snow-laden landscapes? A hike led by huskies. This four-hour trek is guided by a pack of nine pooches that take you along apple orchards leading to a deep gorge along the Ahilya River. You can either take the path to a hidden waterfall or the road leading to the Majhach village which offers panoramic views of the Kully valley. Sip on a cup of coffee at Cafe Ronin before you descend. Book via Exsul Travel.
