The World's Safest Places to Go in 2022

There’s always some degree of risk when you go on vacation. That’s why we have airbags, travel insurance, and those scratchy money belts you’re supposed to wear under your clothes to thwart pickpockets.

Still, there are destinations with stronger safety records than others. To compile our list of the safest places to visit, we sought out nations, regions, and states that have proven successful when it comes to addressing a specific issue (public health, violence, environmental destruction, and others)—though cautious travelers should keep in mind they may face other dangers.

Naturally, each category represents only a small slice of life. Safety levels will vary depending on the peril you’re concerned about. An island with low crime, for instance, may be at high risk from rising waters due to climate change. A country could have a reliable health care system but treacherous roads. And so on.

Believe it or not, a few places are still mostly untouched by Covid-19 or have achieved herd immunity status, but most of them are small specks in the ocean ( Saint Helena ,  Pitcarin Island ,  Niue , and the  Cook Islands ) that maintained safety by making it nearly impossible for tourists to visit casually—so those places aren't on the list for now.

Instead of relying on our editors’ subjective experiences, we based our selections on stats and data-driven studies—and we’ve supplied some recommendations for how to enjoy each destination, too.

After all, there’s no reason why you can’t stay safe and have fun at the same time.

World's Safest Places: Cleanest air: Tasmania

A team of international environmental scientists recently went looking for biological aerosol particles in the air over the Southern Ocean, south of Australia and New Zealand , and in 2020, they announced they had made an incredible discovery: absolutely nothing . There wasn't even enough DNA wafting around to work with. "This region’s marine boundary layer and the clouds that overtop [are] truly pristine, free from continental and anthropogenic influences," the report concluded . To get a lung full of that air, you could always take a boat into the middle of the Southern Ocean (bring a good coat), but it's probably more fun to visit one of the nearest land masses. You'll breathe easy in Tasmania , a sparsely populated island off the southern coast of Australia. Visitors lucky enough to blow through will find a corner of the world that's packed with outdoor pleasures like national parks, bush walks, coastal hikes (like in Wineglass Bay, pictured above), and sumptuously untainted seafood pulled daily from the sea.

World's Safest Places to Go: Cleanest water: Puerto Williams, Southern Chile

The remote Magallanes region at the southern tip of Chile is about as far from major cities and heavy industry as you’re able to get without a spacesuit—the tumultuous national capital of Santiago is some 2,200 miles north—and consequently, the purity of the ground water in Magallanes is matchless. In 2015, scientists found the town or Puerto Williams had the cleanest on the planet : “The instruments we used to study the samples can detect two parts of chemicals per every million parts of water, and here they detected nothing,” reported Guido Verbeck, director of the University of North Texas' Laboratory of Imaging Mass Spectrometry. Puerto Williams has a population of less than 3,000 (so there’s almost no crime, too), but there are countess reasons to go: It’s considered the gateway to a host of epic, world-famous adventures around Patagonia, including excursions to Antarctica, tours of the glaciers in Alberto Agostini National Park, multiday hikes through the source region of the town's water in Dientes de Navarino (pictured above), and boat trips through the pristine ecosystems of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.

The World's Safest Places: Best Health Care: Norway

Many factors play into which places have the best—and worst—health care systems, including access to care, affordability of services, and outcome. In 2021, the Commonwealth Fund, a health care foundation,  did a deep study of the topic, looking at 71 performance measures among 11 high-income nations. It found Norway at the top of the heap. (The U.S.A., in case you're wondering, came in dead last.) One of the reasons for the win was the country's Patients' Rights Act, a game-changing law that guarantees access to care and lets patients choose their hospitals and plans, among other benefits. In this time of pandemic, it's comforting to know that if you happened to fall ill while in Norway, the care you'd receive would be world-class.

But Norway is also a wonderful place to be healthy, especially for visitors. The cities of Oslo and Bergen (pictured above) are sophisticated, arts-rich destinations, full of some of the finest restaurants, museums, shops, and architecture on the planet. Beyond its big cities, Norway , which lies partly within the Arctic Circle, presents drama at every turn: Virgin forests are slashed by fjords, adorned with waterfalls and glaciers, and teeming with herds of reindeer and sleuths of polar bears.

Safest Places to Visit in the World: Most Peaceful: Iceland

For the most part,  Iceland confines its violence to the Viking tales recounted in the island's history museums. The country ranked first in the 2021 Global Peace Index measuring the nations of the world by level of societal security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and degree of militarization. Those tranquil social conditions are balanced by some of the globe’s most exciting landscapes, involving lava fields, glaciers, geysers, waterfalls, and hot springs (the popular  Blue Lagoon , southwest of Reykjavik, is pictured above). Travelers can rest assured that these showstopping settings for outdoor adventures are kept pristine—the 2020 Environmental Performance Index determined that Iceland has some of the planet’s safest sanitation and cleanest water.

Safest Places to Visit in the World: Least Self-Harm: The Caribbean

Globally speaking, the four countries with the lowest suicide rates —1.) Antigua and Barbuda , 2.) Barbados , 3.) Grenada , and 4.) St. Vincent and the Grenadines —are all located in the Caribbean Sea. Anyone who has spent time on one of these island nations’ picture-perfect beaches is probably not shocked to discover that residents have no trouble scrounging up reasons to keep living. Tropical scenery aside, a low incidence of self-harm arguably suggests a culture that values social connections and the happiness and security of the citizenry. Those are good signs for visitors.

For a speck of paradise that combines self-care with newly reclaimed self-determination, try Barbados  (pictured above), which removed the U.K.’s Queen Elizabeth II as head of state in November and promptly named  homegrown pop star Rihanna a national hero. With Bajan pride running high, it’s a great time to check out new improvements at the island’s natural attractions, sample local cuisine, and soak up that life-affirming sunshine.

A sloth hangs from a tree in Costa Rica.

On international measures, Costa Rica appears on top of a few categories. Thanks to a creatively proactive health system that assigns a team of nurses and doctors to every citizen, Costa Rica now has a longer life expectancy than the United States. It also has better-than-usual hospitals and health services, particularly compared with its neighbors. Costa Rica also has the highest scores in Latin America for the Global Peace Index , which measures societal safety and security (Iceland topped the overall list; see above), the degree of militarization (Costa Rica has no army), and extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict.

On the travel front, this relatively small nation (it's the size of West Virginia) remains a wonderful choice for nature lovers. Costa Rica has a surprisingly high level of biodiversity, with landscapes toggling between beach, jungle, cloud forest, and rainforest, and much of it is carefully protected within 27 national parks. Vacationers find abundant opportunities for nature walks, mountain biking, rafting, surfing, canyoning, fishing, and diving.

Sleepy Hollow Farm in Pomfret, Vermont

As if dense forests and gently rolling hills weren’t already inducements to explore Vermont on foot,  U.S. traffic data shows the state has the country’s lowest per-capita fatality rate for pedestrians. Among the worry-free ambles available to carless visitors: southern Vermont’s inn-to-inn walking tour , a self-guided, four-day hike through quintessential New England villages, past sparkling lakes, and over wooded mountains, with overnight stops at charming B&Bs along the way. Leaf-peeping in Woodstock (Sleepy Hollow Farm in nearby Pomfret is pictured above), skiing mighty Mount Mansfield , and shopping for maple syrup at a sugar house are other excellent reasons for stopping the car.

Mountain biking in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington State

Washington has made bicycling so safe and accessible it almost seems a shame to explore the state via any other mode of transportation. The Pacific Northwest destination is a mainstay in the top spot in the League of American Bicyclists’ annual ranking of states by how well they meet more than 100 benchmarks measuring the safety and convenience of cycling policies and accommodations. So, obviously, Washington is a great choice for a biking vacation, rewarding those on two wheels with views of orca-dotted Puget Sound in the San Juan Islands , misty rainforests and craggy coasts on the Olympic Peninsula , and the awe-inspiring peaks of the Cascade Range on old logging roads through national forests ( Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is pictured above).

World's Safest Places to Go: Longest life expectancy: Japan

In 2019, the World Health Organization determined that in Japan , life expectancy at birth (averaged between males and females) was 84.3 years, the best on Earth. The United States measured more than a half-decade shorter, at 78.5. What could account for the eternal flowering of the Japanese citizen? The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition surmises that people live longer in Japan because they do the opposite of what most Americans do: Eating a lot of red meat and saturated fatty acids are outside of the norm in Japan, where residents opt instead for fish and plant foods such as soybeans as well as unsweetened drinks such as green tea. The combined menu results in less obesity and fewer cancers. Not that you could fly to Japan and order dinner right now. Since Covid-19 began, the country has been off-limits to casual visitors—but that’s another example of intelligent avoidance that has a centuries-long tradition in Japan. Careful self-protection against foreign invaders, whether they be human, dietary, or viral, has no doubt been a secret to Japan's success in longevity, and such enduring tradtions are a big reason Japan is a dream destination for so many. No one wants to go on vacation only to be too afraid to leave their hotel. So, if you’re looking for the safest countries to travel to in 2024, plan your next trip around this list.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, a travel insurance provider, just released its annual list of the safest countries in the world . The rankings are created using an extensive methodology that includes surveying recent travelers, analyzing data from the Global Peace Index and the US State Department, and evaluating the GeoSure Global scores of the major cities in each country. These data points are used to calculate a weighted score reflecting each country’s safety.

Berkshire Hathaway issues an important caveat alongside its safest countries list: “These ratings aren’t predictive—that is, just because we say Canada is safe that doesn’t mean it will rank in the Top 10 in the future. Also, it doesn’t account for the possibility of natural disasters, like the Canadian wildfires.” Inclusion on the list also doesn’t mean that “every part of the company is as safe as any other,” says the company.

This is the ninth year that Berkshire Hathaway has released this study. Over the years, the company says the definition of a safe place to travel has changed over time. “A safe place was originally a place that’s largely free from terrorist activity. Then it became a place that was safe from disease outbreaks. Now it’s a place where all types of people can move about freely without discrimination or harassment.”

Canada rose from sixth place in 2023 to claim the title of the safest country to travel to in 2024. Canada was ranked highly for safety due to its low rates of violent crime. However, travelers are advised to watch out for wildfires, which have been a major issue in the country in recent years, causing diminished air quality and the potential for health problems.

Safety looks different for every traveler. The study also broke down the safest countries by a number of specific categories.

These Are the Safest Countries in the World in 2023

Safest Countries in the World Slovenia

It may seem hard to determine which are the safest countries in the world, but for many travelers, the question is top of mind. A sense of security in a destination can be vital when selecting a place to visit—whether that's because you're a solo traveler, moving around with small children, or worried about discrimination. To help quantify the topic of safety, the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP) has released its annual Global Peace Index (GPI), a data-driven measurement of global peacefulness.

The 2023 results are broadly similar to the 2022 rankings (more details on that below) but there have been some movements in the list—with a couple of new additions, too. The most peaceful country in the world, however, remains the same for the 16th year running.

The report notes that while some factors (such as the death toll from terrorism) have improved over time, the amount of COVID-19-related violent incidents—riots in response to lockdown, targeted physical assaults, etc.—from 2020 to 2021 were off the charts. In fact, there were at least 158 countries that recorded one or more violent incidents directly related to the pandemic during this time.

To assemble the list, the IEP ranks 163 nations using three domains of peacefulness: the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization. Within those domains, the organization looks at 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators , including incarceration rates, homicide rates, deaths from internal conflict, perceptions of criminality, and more. The scores are then averaged for an overall composite—the lower the score, the safer the space.

Below, you’ll find the 10 safest countries in the world, along with each country’s score (one being the most peaceful, five being the least).

10. Switzerland

Score: 1.339

Switzerland rounds out the list of the top 10 peaceful countries in the world—despite the fact that it ranks among the highest weapons exporters per capita. It's clearly safe enough in other areas to land in such a high ranking, though.

Score: 1.336

Japan is the ninth most peaceful country. It comes second (after Finland ) in safety and security rankings, which positions it strongly to rank on this list. Japan reopened its borders fully after the pandemic just this year—plan a trip with our article on the all the best new things to do in the country.

8. Slovenia

Score: 1.334

Slovenia broke into the top 10 for the first time in 2020 and managed to stay there since, thanks to extremely low crime rates and terrorism risk. The country dropped from its 2022 ranking of five to spot eight, but whether you’re just generally into beautiful places or want to explore some of Europe’s best castles and lakes, Slovenia has plenty to offer—including the guarantee that you'll sleep well at night.

Lake Bled Slovenia

Slovenia has a distinct lack of violent crime and internal conflict.

7. Portugal

Score: 1.333

Portugal has made significant strides in peacefulness in recent years. In 2014, the country was transitioning out of financial crisis and was ranked 18th on the GPI. Today, it is a beacon of economic resurgence and low crime rates. Add to that a Mediterranean climate and affordable healthcare, and it’s little wonder so many people decide to retire in Portugal in their golden years. It has dropped three places since last year's rankings, but still makes the top 10.

6. Singapore

Score: 1.332

Singapore is a new entry on the list, ranking in the top five in categories such as safety and security (number four) and ongoing conflict (number three). It's the second-placing country in the Asia Pacific region.

Score: 1.316

Another stalwart in this list, Austria ranks at number five this year—dropping one place since 2022. For inspiration for your next (or first) trip, see our guides to the Austrian capital—including a local's take on the country.

4. New Zealand

Score: 1.313

New Zealand is down two places from the 2022 listing—it's now number 4 on the list, but was number 2 in the 2022 ranking. It's the safest country in the Asia-Pacific region, though, and there were improvements in this year's data—especially in terms of violent demonstrations, the incarceration rate. and terrorism impact indicators. But there were big drops in militarization, especially the importing and exporting of weapons.

Score: 1.312

Ireland has jumped five places since last year, leaping from number eight to round out the top three. In 2022, the country was a new addition to the top 10. This means that all of the top three safest countries of the world this year are in Europe.

Score: 1.31

Up one spot since 2022 when it ranked third, Denmark is in second place in the 2023 Global Peace Index. The nation stands out for its well-functioning government, low levels of corruption, and equitable distribution of resources. Interestingly, Denmark also ranks second in the list of the happiest countries in the world .

Copenhagen Denmark

Violence and international conflict are practically nonexistent in Denmark.

Score: 1.124

Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world for the 16th year in a row—it's held the position since the inception of the index in 2008. The Nordic nation has some of the lowest military spending and international conflict rates in the world (not having any shared borders helps). There has been a four percent deterioration in the country's score since 2008 though, which the report attributes to increased homicide and terrorism risks.

The safest countries to visit (and the most dangerous ones)

The safest countries to visit

It would be an understatement to say that we are living in strange times. World news tends to shift towards shocking events and it is hard to tell exactly what are the safest countries to visit. With all the focus on the coronavirus from the past two years or so, it is easy to slip out on other factors that need to be considered when deciding on the safest places to travel and eliminating (or considering if you are a daredevil!) the most dangerous places in the world.

When travel resumes, taking the virus into account before making any plans would be crucial. However, it’d be equally important to consider factors like language barriers, differing cultural norms, crime, and the unfamiliarity that comes with travelling to an unknown place. This is where having a list of the safest countries in the world might prove to be quite helpful.

In this article, we explore some of the safest places to travel in the world and the most dangerous places to travel to while sharing some easy safety hacks to put your mind at ease.

Our list of safe and dangerous places

Safest countries in the world, new zealand, dangerous places to visit, puerto rico, world’s safest countries to visit.

One of the safest places in the world, Japan

Japan is one of the safest countries to visit. Japanese people are famously known for their politeness and kindness. Their hospitable nature and respectfulness can make any tourist feel like the Japanese are some of the most helpful people in the world.

Many people in Japan leave their doors unlocked and don’t even bother to lock up their bikes. You’ll also hear stories of people who have lost their belongings getting them returned to them. There is a general sense of community in this country. This reputation puts Japan at the top of the list as one of the safest countries to visit.

Safe places to travel, Singapore

Singapore is one of the safest places to travel in Asia. Violent crimes against tourists virtually don’t exist. There have been very few cases of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, which occurs mainly at the airport and areas most visited by tourists.

An additional perk would be Singapore’s resilience against the virus- the city-state would probably be one of the safest places to visit even considering the coronavirus in a post-pandemic world given their excellent track record.

However, if you’re a newcomer to Singapore, you should be aware of real estate and gambling scams. but for tourists, the Lion City is arguably one of the safest vacation spots.

READ MORE: Introducing Singapore to the world (real experience sharing)

Canada is one of the safest countries to visit

Canada is one of the safest places to travel to. Canadians are very hospitable and welcoming. With a low crime rate in general, and violent crime being confined to specific regions up North, Canada is considered to be one of the safest places to travel.

The tourist spots are mostly safe here with rare incidents of snatch and grabs from cars in Montreal or pick pocketing. It’s best not to leave your belongings in plain sight in your car, and unlike Japan, you should use a lock to keep your bicycle safe as theft can be a problem in some parts of the country like Montreal and Vancouver.

Safest countries in the world, Iceland

Iceland is always ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. The greatest threat to visitors is natural hazards from rapid change in weather. If you plan on driving, it can be dangerous because of the weather and road conditions. Keep your eyes open as sheep tend to get loose and roam around the roads.

Safest countries to visit, New Zealand

New Zealand is yet another country that has the reputation of being the safest place on earth. Taking road trips around the countryside in a camper van is a popular choice for most tourists, but visitors are advised to lock their cars to protect their belongings from theft.

It is best to avoid noisy bars, aggressive crowds, or youth groups in the outskirts of small towns. Most violent crimes in the country happen in Auckland around the Sky Tower and casino.

Also, New Zealand is yet another country that has bested the world in their fight against the virus. So, this place should definitely be on your list of safest places to travel to.

Safest places to travel, Myanmar

Myanmar is one of the safest developing countries in the world, thanks mainly to its Buddhist culture. The government is also known to severely punish those who cause problems with tourists. The level of crimes is moderate.

In Yangon (Rangoon), locals experience robberies, murders and some petty crimes. Tourists have almost never faced any violent crimes. Be vigilant while exchanging money, as there are plenty of scams. Homosexuality is illegal, so LGBTQ travellers need to be mindful that penalties include sentences of up to 10 years.

Infamous places that are definitely not the safest countries to visit

Syria is currently a very dangerous destination

Even though Syria is a beautiful country and has many sites worth visiting, it is almost impossible to visit the country, which is now a war zone.

Travelling to Syria is strongly discouraged due to the on-going conflict, which has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. The country has become extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Syria is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Dangerous place to visit, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has a crime problem now greater than New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago metro areas combined. It’s a dangerous place to travel. Crime rates are lower in the wealthier suburbs outside of major city areas.

Major issues tend to be with theft, so make sure to keep your belongings close. Puerto Rico can be safe if you take advice from authorities, hotels and tour guides. Criminals tend to work together in groups and use different tricks to distract unsuspecting travellers.

Not safe for travel, Egypt

Egypt is one of the most dangerous places to visit. Cairo, Alexandria, and the tourist areas along the Nile River, the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are considered safe according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is essential to respect the local traditions, customs, laws and religions.

It’s important to dress modestly. Women should cover their upper arms and legs and men should always cover their chests. Make sure you always have an ID and a photocopy of your passport. Keep your eye on your belongings as “accidental” spills are a popular distraction. If anyone spills something on you, step away and be on your toes. It would be fair to say that Egypt is not one of the safest places in the world.

Dangerous holiday destination, Belize

Belize has a high crime rate and is not one of the safest places to travel. However, violent crimes are usually gang-related and kept to certain areas. Crimes, such as robbery, sexual assault and mugging are common throughout the country. Most burglaries and assaults are reported in resort areas.

It is important to note that criminals often work in groups and specifically target solo travellers. It is recommended that you do not venture into isolated or poorly lit areas. If you plan on travelling after dark, it is best to book a taxi.

Regardless of whether a country is deemed safe or dangerous, it is always best to be alert when travelling. There is no need to be in a constant state of paranoia, but using good judgement and common sense will keep you out of sticky situations when travelling abroad.

It’s also important to remember that you should respect the culture of the locals while travelling anywhere- even if it’s deemed the most dangerous place on the planet or is one of the safest countries to visit.

Plus, in a post-pandemic world, getting vaccinated, following safe distancing rules, wearing masks and maintaining general hygiene would still be the norm. So, irrespective of what place you choose to visit, make sure that you travel responsibly and stay safe.

Travel Safety in 2022: The Safest Places to Go (And Beyond)

Jul 29, 2022

The last two-plus years have brought a lot of changes to travel, and that’s an understatement. Basically anything anyone ever knew or assumed about travel has been turned on its head by a pandemic and subsequent global upheaval.

Travel safety has arguably been battered the most by this tidal wave of upheaval. What people considered to be a safe trip just three years ago is nothing like what they consider to be a safe trip today.

No one knows this better than the travel insurance provider Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection . For the last five years BHTP has conducted research into travelers’ attitudes toward travel insurance, travel safety, and what really makes a destination safe.

Here are some of the things BHTP has found about travel safety, and how people’s concepts of travel safety have changed – not only over the years, but from traveler group to traveler group.

Finding #1: People feel safer than ever when they travel

Despite everything from terrorism to pandemics, more than two-thirds of travelers say they feel safe when they travel. The question has been asked every year for the last four years, and the percentage of travelers who say they feel safe just keeps increasing:

This is especially remarkable when you realize that the number of travelers who say they feel safe when they travel increased from half to almost two-thirds in the middle of a pandemic.

What’s driving this feeling of safety and security among travelers, even in the face of some real dire stuff?

In a word: Millennials.

Millennial travelers are much more likely to say they feel safe when they travel, with around three-quarters of them saying they feel safe:

Of course, if Millennial travelers are more likely to say they feel safe when they travel, that means some group is feeling less safe, and that group would be older travelers.

Millennial travelers and older travelers reacted to the pandemic in vastly different ways. Older travelers told BHTP they largely stopped traveling overseas and restricted their travels to road trips and family vacations.

Millennials, on the other hand, said that they continued to travel internationally, or planned to continue to travel internationally, taking different types of transportation and visiting different destinations as opposed to not traveling altogether.

Finding #2: Money talks

The pandemic really exacerbated a shift in the profile of the average traveler and a split in attitudes toward travel among older and younger travelers.

Many of the Baby Boomers who drove travel over the last several decades are cutting back on travel, and younger, more adventurous travelers are taking up the slack.

You can see this by looking at the data on travel spending over the last several years. Younger travelers are saying they’re spending more on travel, and older travelers aren’t:

Over the long term, this is actually a good sign. It shows that a new generation is showing its love for travel in the most tangible way possible – by spending money on travel.

The BHTP data shows this not only in terms of actual spending but potential spending. According to its research, if you gave an older person an extra $5,000, they’d be more likely to save it. Younger people would be much more likely to spend it on travel.

Finding #3: The decline of terrorism … sort of

Terrorism might not be on people’s radar to the same extent that it was several years ago, and that’s led to some mixed feelings about its impact on travel safety.

When BHTP first started conducting travel research in 2017, here were the biggest threats to travel, in order of importance, with the percentage of people who see it as a threat in parentheses:

Problems with airlines/flights (26.11%)

International terrorism (25.74%)

Restrictions on loyalty programs (13.7%)

Disease outbreaks (12.04%)

Natural disasters (11.66%)

Computer outages/hacks (11.3%)

My economic situation (10.56%)

The 2016 elections (10.56%)

The worldwide refugee crisis (10.37%)

The international economy (6.11%)

Here are the biggest threats to travel in 2022:

Disease outbreaks (55.80%)

International terrorism (50.74%)

Travel suppliers going out of business (33.29%)

Climate change / environmental impacts of travel (34.70%)

My personal health (34.20%)

My economic situation (33.92%)

Vanishing destinations (39.27%)

Natural disasters (42.22%)

Safety concerns at my destination (43.70%)

Increased cost of travel (40.95%)

Problems with airlines / flights (38.84%)

While terrorists incidents affecting travelers have largely ceased to be a problem, people still seem to see terrorism as twice the travel threat it was five years ago. Why?

One of the interesting byproducts of the pandemic is that it caused huge jumps in the number of people willing to consider anything to be a threat to travel, regardless of whether it had anything to do with the pandemic.

That’s one side of the picture. Here’s the other side.

When travelers were asked in the latest survey to list the factors that make a destination safe, freedom from terrorist attacks only came in middle of the pack, far behind being able to move about freely and safely.

Even though travelers seem to be a little more jumpy than in the past, for many of them, practical concerns trump terrorism when it comes to judging a destination as safe.

The bottom line: the world’s safest places

For the last four years, BHTP has asked travelers to rate countries on safety, and has used that data as the cornerstone of an overall safety index that also includes data from:

GeoSure Global , whose GeoSafe ratings evaluate a destination almost on a block-by-block basis on measures ranging from safety for LGBTQ+ travelers to safety at night;

The Global Peace Index , which measures how militarized a country and its citizens are, and how tolerant it is of internal dissent;

The U.S. State Department’s numerical safety rankings ; and

Ratings on pandemic penetration and handling from global public-health sites.

Even a scale that uses multiple data points is imperfect; for instance, in 2021 China plummeted in BHTP’s rankings because American travelers blamed the country for starting and spreading the COVID pandemic.

Pandemic aside, China didn’t become significantly less safe in any tangible way from 2020 to 2021; American travelers just thought of it as less safe.

The results

While travel might have been in upheaval over the last couple of years, American  travelers have not wavered much in their assessment of the world’s safest countries.

Iceland has been a top-10 finisher for as long as BHTP has done its index, and it once more took home the top spot in 2022.

Iceland’s win continues a four-year streak in which the country deemed safest is  English-speaking and/or part of Europe. These countries also dominate the top 10.

It makes sense. If you think back to what travelers said makes a destination safe – being able to move about freely and safely – these are countries where it’s possible for American travelers to just that.

As for the world’s safest city, a plot twist: It’s a predominantly French-speaking city in a predominantly English-speaking country.

Montreal , which made the list for the first time this year, took home the title of the World’s Safest City, narrowly nudging out Amsterdam for the honor.

Repeat top-10 finishers included London, Tokyo, and Berlin.

Be sure to check out the blog posts for the full top-10 lists of the world’s safest countries and the world’s safest cities.

General observations on safe destinations

Especially these days, travel safety is in the eyes of the traveler. For instance, Africa was one of the safest places to travel during the pandemic in terms of COVID infection rates, but did African travel spike? It barely budged.

Similarly, London experienced some crippling COVID spikes, but it still remained safe in the eyes of American travelers, who also were willing to turn a blind eye toward issues with destinations like Singapore and Dubai.

Also, what you might consider to be a safe destination might seem unsafe to others, whether because of their gender, their ethnicity, or their tolerance for cultural differences.

However, if you’re a typical American traveler, especially a younger traveler, you’re likely unbothered by anything.

In your case, fire up the motors. It’s time to fly.

10 Safest Countries To Travel To In 2022

Exploring the world is a must for many reasons, including the cultural experience that it provides.

However, there are many possibilities that can happen when you are exploring somewhere new for the first time.

This is especially true when you are traveling alone to a new country.

Because of this, it is worth being aware of the potential risks that you are likely to encounter within a particular country.

With this knowledge, it will be easier to protect yourself and anyone else that you are planning to travel with.

Each of the countries below offer a unique selection of cultural experiences which are worth visiting.

Not only that, but there are numerous natural wonders that contribute to idyllic landscapes and act as tourist attractions.

To err on the side of caution, it could be worth traveling to some of the safest places possible.

Here are ten of the safest countries that you should travel to in 2022, and why.

Even if you are traveling in large groups, it is important to be aware of potential dangers abroad.

1

What Makes A Country Safe?

New zealand, czech republic.

Firstly, what are the criteria for classifying a country as safe?

There are many different ways in which this is measured, which are important to keep in mind.

For example, some countries consider themselves safe when they have a strong military defense which is intact.

Being able to defend themselves when threatened can make a country feel safer, while others prefer to have no military defense as a symbol of their security and confidence that they will not face a significant threat.

On the other hand, certain countries believe that they are safest when crime rates are low.

Other countries consider themselves to be safe when there is minimal political conflict.

Each of these contributes to a slightly different rating in terms of a country’s safety category.

Because of this, it is worth considering the different aspects that go into classifying a country’s safety.

In this sense, safety is not necessarily an objective measure that all countries are following.

Because of this, it is difficult to draw firm conclusions about which countries are the safest on the whole.

2

Each country uses their own units of measure when it comes to safety, which is why we have considered factors such as average crime rates and political conflict.

However, countries whose leaders put the interests of the public first are typically more likely to have happier populations on the whole.

In turn, this can contribute to a considerable reduction in crime as well as attracting more immigrants to live there.

It is interesting to see the types of methods which are used by each country and how their cultural influences have impacted the sets of laws and behaviors of residents.

Even though the following countries are considered to be the safest for travel in 2022, they have very different political stances and approaches to leadership.

Consider how each of the countries below differs when it comes to valuing their citizens and demonstrating certain cultural values.

Each has a range of unique characteristics which add to the appeal for many tourists.

Because of the range of measures that go into classifying a country’s safety, it is important to consider your personal opinion and other measures as well.

Make sure you are aware of each country’s safety rating before planning to travel to them.

This can allow you to make the most out of your cultural experience in the long run.

Idyllic scenery is seemingly limitless in New Zealand , and there have been many iconic movies that were filmed in the unique scenery which this country provides.

As well as the vibrant culture that can be found in most towns and cities, New Zealand stands out for its incredibly hospitable locals.

Adventure sports are a great reason to explore this country, and the vast coastlines provide an excellent opportunity to surf, swim, kayak, and much more.

You could easily try something new or enjoy the peace that comes from the vast bodies of water.

The crime rate in New Zealand is considerably low, due to the restrictions on guns as well as the mutual respect which residents feel towards one another.

Many communities encourage people to place their bags or belongings in a designated area rather than carrying them around with them when they are visiting a communal area.

In general, most people consider the weather to be the biggest threat to safety in New Zealand.

This is because of the relatively high risks of volcano eruptions and earthquakes in certain areas.

However, there are plenty of warning signs that locals are aware of, and many communities have active earthquake sirens and alarm systems.

Because of this, New Zealand is generally a safe place to visit.

Wine enthusiasts should certainly pay a visit to New Zealand in 2022.

Some of the most unique vineyards can be found in this country, which contribute to an interesting flavor profile as well as range of aromas.

No visit to New Zealand is complete without seeing the vibrant city of Queenstown.

The bold colors and world-renowned bungee jumping are only some of the reasons why New Zealand is worth visiting.

4

Another country worth traveling to during 2022 is Portugal .

It is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in the world, thanks to its low rates of crime and great relationship with neighboring countries.

Not only that, but there have been very few instances of political conflict.

This means that Portugal is a relatively stable country to visit due to its stable political scene as well as minimal cases of violent demonstrations.

Portugal is widely considered to be the safest country in Europe, and we would certainly recommend planning a trip there in 2022.

Wander through the vineyards and taste delicious local wines, or explore the historic sections of Lisbon .

This country certainly has a lot to offer, and it should be a part of your bucket list if it isn’t already!

Portugal is also considered to be very good value for money, so it could be ideal for the traveler on a budget.

Something that particularly stands out about this country is the unique scenery.

Portugal’s landscapes vary from rich green mountains to waterfalls and desert-like areas moving from the North to South.

This means that there is truly something for everyone when it comes to exploring Portugal.

Whether you want to enjoy the surf of the Mediterranean Sea, or play golf in one of the best courses in Europe, Portugal has everything you need for an incredible visit.

Consider planning a trip to this incredible country if you want to spend more time relaxing on beaches and the slower pace of life.

5

Widely considered to be the most peaceful countries out there, Iceland is certainly worth visiting.

The unique climate has led to the formation of some exciting natural sites such as volcanic hot springs, the northern lights’ visibility, and vast countryside.

Iceland has been consistently ranked as the safest country in the world.

This is thanks to the very low crime and murder rates, as well as the lack of harmful or potentially dangerous animals.

Iceland does not have any mosquitoes, bears, poisonous spiders, and snakes, which means that you can wander through forests without getting bitten and pick berries without worrying about meeting a bear.

Most areas of Iceland have a range of hospitable families that provide an excellent sense of community and togetherness.

This means that there is a sense of mutual respect among one another, which contributes to the low crime and overall positive atmosphere.

In addition to this, Iceland has very high standards for education.

This means that employment is great and the class-free structure of their society can be mutually beneficial for all.

Likewise, everybody in Iceland is equal in terms of pay, religion, and adoption.

Not even the president of Iceland has a bodyguard, which should be a positive insight into how safe and comfortable this country is.

The majority of people in Iceland tend to speak English as well, which means that tourists and visitors are likely to feel a warm welcome and find it easier to communicate with locals.

If you are a fan of waterfalls, glaciers, outdoor adventures, and more, then Iceland is an incredibly idyllic country that is worth exploring for yourself.

It has been widely regarded as the most peaceful country in the world, and it isn’t difficult to see why.

Residents in Iceland enjoy a plethora of unique natural wonders, and can relax in iconic hot springs such as the spa-like Blue Lagoon just outside of Reykjavík .

6

There is a reason why the Canadian stereotype features excessive apologizing, they are an incredibly polite and well-mannered population.

This means that crime in general is very low and the rates of conflict are likewise.

Canada is a great place to visit, and it isn’t difficult to understand why it is such a big part of many people’s bucket lists.

Consider visiting Canada to see some of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

Police and emergency services are easy to contact, and relatively fast to respond.

Like many other countries with more extreme weather patterns, there is an increased sense of community and togetherness that residents feel in Canada.

This means that locals are more likely to welcome visitors and encourage them to explore the area.

Not only that, but Canada has an incredible education system which encourages individuals to maintain their careers and develop themselves into well-rounded citizens.

This means that most residents are likely to find fulfilling long-term employment, and there are much lower rates of unemployment in Canada as a result.

This also means that Canada has one of the best economies in the world, and their banks are incredibly stable on the whole.

There are also considerably low instances of political unrest, thanks to Canada being voted the most inclusive country in the world.

The country has fully embraced multiculturalism, and celebrates diversity on a regular basis.

This contributes to the low crime rates on average, as there are fewer instances of discrimination than many other countries.

Thanks to many unique factors, Canada is one of the safest countries to travel to.

We would highly recommend visiting the country in order to see some of nature’s wonders if possible.

These include Niagara Falls , the Heritage Park Historical Village, and many nature reserves.

7

Another country with relatively low crime rates is Slovenia .

The biggest risk that you are likely to face when visiting Slovenia is petty theft, as the violent crime rates in this country are very low.

In fact, Slovenia has been considered the safest country in Eastern Europe as a result.

As long as careful consideration is being taken to keep your valuables in a safe place, then you should have very few issues when you are visiting Slovenia.

Public transport poses its own risk for pickpockets, but the chances of this are also relatively low.

This is partly because the country itself is relatively small compared to its bordering countries.

This means that Slovenia is a relatively safe country to visit, and there are minimal risks that you are likely to encounter.

In terms of security threats, this country has been rated similarly to Iceland, Switzerland , and Norway .

Something that many people are unaware of is that Slovenia has a great deal of natural wonders that are worth visiting.

These include plenty of beautiful lakes, landscapes, rivers, and mountains.

Make sure you plan to visit Triglav national park to see the crystal clear water flowing, and Ljubljana with the historic town and the river flowing through it.

The great thing about Slovenia is that it is a frequently underrated tourist destination.

This could mean that it is easy to blend in with the locals and explore the range of landscapes and mountainous terrain with ease.

Avoid the crowds by planning a trip to Slovenia in 2022.

Make sure you schedule a visit to Slovenia’s ancient cities which have their own intense history.

This country stands out for its range of contrasting landscapes, and it is worth appreciating where old meets new in terms of architecture as well as culture.

Prague is a cultural hub of Europe, and many people have this destination on their bucket list.

There is a rich selection of cultures which are celebrated throughout this city and beyond.

There are many things to do when you are in Prague, and it is worth being aware of the different sites that you can see and visit.

Consider the cathedrals, small towns, zoos, and historical monuments that are on offer in this vibrant city.

The rest of the Czech Republic offers a remarkable selection of views and sites that are worth exploring.

The Global Peace Index has rated the Czech Republic as one of the safest countries to visit since 2019, and it isn’t difficult to understand why.

In addition to low crime rates, the Czech Republic has very strong communities throughout the country.

The respect that residents have for each other is impressive to any visitor, and it helps everybody to take care of each other.

Not only that, but the Czech Republic has a very low terrorism threat, and it is difficult to access weapons.

The healthcare system is also impressive throughout the country, and it is worth paying a visit to the Czech Republic if the opportunity presents itself in the future.

Enjoy the range of interesting architecture that the Czech Republic has to offer, and explore the Medieval towns.

Whether you are a fan of beer or gothic architecture, there is something to enjoy about this country.

It is reassuring to know that you can explore many areas of this country freely knowing that you are in one of the safest locations in the world.

Usually ranked as the third-safest country in the world, Austria offers a range of unique cultural experiences that are worth taking part in.

As well as very low rates of mugging and pickpockets, visitors shouldn’t worry about natural disasters too much either.

However, it is worth asking locals and researching the conditions beforehand so that you can prepare for a potential avalanche.

The wonderful views of the nearby mountains are breathtaking alone, but it is worth appreciating the rich art and music culture which can be found in Austria.

Whether you enjoy winter sports like skiing or enjoying a delicate tasting coffee in a local café, there is something for everyone in Austria.

Being able to enjoy this country is easier than ever, because of how safe it has been ranked.

Despite a military background, Austria is an example of how neoclassic architecture can be used to celebrate a peaceful life filled with art and music.

Enjoy getting lost in the winding streets of Austria and explore what the country truly has to offer.

Explore the unique architecture and learn more about Austria’s past by visiting some of the many museums.

There are also many breathtaking palaces and grand venues to explore around Vienna , Austria’s capital.

The diverse landscape that surrounds this country is fascinating, and many tourists enjoy wandering through the endless streets of Austria.

Consider the type of experiences you want to have before visiting, and ensure that you are familiar with keeping yourself safe.

10

There is a considerable amount of mutual respect and trust that residents place in each other in Japan .

Many visitors are shocked by this, and it is worth noting that Japan is one of the safest countries in the world.

This can be seen by residents leaving their belongings unaccompanied in public places, and the very low theft rates in general.

Some things to be aware of when visiting Japan is that unfortunately, cases of convicting people who have sexually assaulted someone are rare.

Likewise, up skirting is also relatively common in cities like Kyoto and Tokyo .

Because of this, it is recommended that visitors are mindful of what they wear and how other people behave around them.

If this is something that concerns you, then it could be worth trying to blend in with the locals if possible.

It is also worth being mindful of any public displays of affection if you are planning to visit Japan with a partner or loved one.

These are uncommon in Japan, and it is likely that you will stand out in a crowd, regardless of your gender or sexual orientation.

While the LGBTQIA+ community is rich in Tokyo, it is worth acknowledging that same-sex marriage is technically illegal in Japan.

Outside the city, it could be worth avoiding telling residents about your preferences if you are concerned about the impact of the conservative values.

One of the biggest risks to safety in Japan, however, is earthquakes.

Japan’s location is known as the ‘ring of fire’ because of its position that makes it more prone to natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

It is important to understand the signs of an earthquake and make sure you know what to do in the case of an earthquake before visiting Japan.

Similarly, there are plenty of weather apps and programs that can give alerts ahead of time that are worth using when you are visiting Japan.

On the whole, however, instances of some of the crimes and risks above are relatively low.

This has contributed to Japan being known as one of the safest countries in the world.

There are many modern technologies and developments to explore in Japan, and it was among the first Asian countries to independently modernize.

Enjoy the futuristic feel that Tokyo and other cities within Japan have to offer during your visit.

Japanese people have the longest life expectancy on average, and it could be worth speaking with some of these individuals on how they gained that title.

This is particularly interesting to many who want to focus on wellness as a whole, and it could be highly rewarding.

Likewise, there are a range of interesting spiritual experiences which Japan has to offer.

These include a range of well-preserved temples and monasteries further from the city of Tokyo.

There is a rich contrast between the cities and villages on the outskirts, and it can be fun to explore both of these areas if you are visiting.

However, it is important to remain vigilant and keep yourself safe when you are visiting Japan.

Because of this, it could be worth looking for a guide who can show you around the less populated areas if you are interested in that.

11

Another country worth visiting that has very low crime rates is Singapore .

There are many diverse gardens with exotic plant species to explore, as well as a range of unique museums and galleries to visit.

The main reason why this country is considered so safe is because of the strict laws which are consistently enforced.

These include chewing gum, and drinking in public.

Because of these rules, Singapore is one of the cleanest countries in Asia.

It is also very well-developed, with the majority of public bathrooms being clean and easy to access.

Likewise, most people living in Singapore are likely to speak English.

This means that it is easy to interact with locals when necessary during your stay.

As a result, it can be easy to order food, make people aware of allergies and intolerances, and more.

Singapore is a highly metropolitan and modern city, and it is ideal for someone who enjoys the cosmopolitan, fast-paced lifestyle.

It is known as a microcosm of Asia, and a city in a garden.

Unfortunately, some of the limitations placed on people who reside in or visit this state can be restrictive.

These include the fact that it is illegal to be gay, or to be a Jehovah’s Witness, in Singapore.

If you are planning to visit Singapore , then it could be worth considering these limitations ahead of time if necessary.

On the other hand, Singapore is an incredible city which is certainly worth visiting.

Make sure you are prepared ahead of time, and that you are open to exploring the highly diverse selection of cuisines that are on offer within the city.

12

The Danish are widely regarded as the happiest individuals in the world, and it isn’t hard to understand why.

Denmark is one of the safest and most friendly countries that is worth visiting.

Among other Scandinavian countries, Denmark has high levels of mutual respect and equality.

As well as the stressed importance of honesty, these have led to some of the lowest crime rates in the world.

There have been numerous studies into the reasons why Danish people are so happy and content in their lives, and many believe that it is a result of their ways of living and values as a population.

Within the world of politics, there tends to be very low, if any, amounts of conflict in Denmark.

This is because most political representatives value the feedback from citizens, and take their views into consideration.

There is a commitment to free speech in Denmark, and the interests of the public are considered carefully.

Thanks to the welfare state, a happier population is less likely to cause social unrest and commit crimes in general.

Because of this, Denmark is widely considered to be one of the safest and happiest countries in the world.

Similarly, Denmark has a very low risk of natural disasters in comparison to similar countries.

This is due to the location of the country, which means that citizens don’t need to worry about earthquakes, volcanic activity, and more.

The main concern that people visiting Denmark are exposed to is avalanches and severe weather patterns.

These are more prevalent in Nordic countries on the whole, so it is worth being aware of this risk beforehand.

Enjoy the slower pace of life which is appreciated by many Danish people, and begin to appreciate the smaller things such as a delicious coffee with friends or sitting by a warm fire.

You’ll begin to feel more relaxed and welcomed in no time!

13

As we have seen, there are many factors that contribute to a country’s overall classification of safety for travelers.

This can mean that other countries should be considered on the list above, depending on what measures you consider necessary for a country’s safety.

When you are planning your visit, it is essential that you are thoroughly researching the relevant culture.

This includes the type of religious practices, food and drink, experiences worth taking part in, and how to behave in public.

Consider the different types of risks that are also relevant to each country, so that you can account for these and ensure that you are as protected as possible.

Similarly, it is also worth staying up to date on the latest developments for a particular country that you are planning to visit.

This includes details on political changes, severe weather warnings, and anything that is likely to impact travel.

Traveling the world is a wonderful way to learn more about yourself as well as different cultures.

It can allow you to experience the world to its fullest potential without worrying about commitments of your day-to-day life.

Consider the countries above which are generally considered to be the top ten safest places to travel in 2022.

There is certainly no limit to the number of countries that are rated as some of the safest in the world.

This means that you are spoiled for choice when it comes to planning your next trip.

Because of this, it is easier to go into smaller details in terms of the destination.

This includes whether there are different risks if you are traveling alone, compared with in a large group.

Ensure that you are protecting yourself from theft, pickpockets, and harassment in general when you are abroad.

This North American country tops the list of the safest countries for travelers

safe countries to travel to 2022

A new year means new destinations.

When looking at where to go, travelers will consider the usual factors such as weather, cost and available activities. This year, safety is also top of mind as more people want to go off the beaten path and take solo trips.

To help, travel insurance provider Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection just released its ninth annual State of Travel Insurance report, which includes the safest countries in the world for travelers.

"The definition of safe destination has evolved,” Carol Mueller, vice president at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, told USA TODAY in an email. "In our most recent survey, travelers lean in on countries they believe as safe destinations they can move about freely without discrimination or harassment."

To determine the list, the travel insurance provider surveyed 1,702 people on their own travel experiences in different countries and also pulled data from third-party resources that evaluate safety concerns such as terrorism, weather emergencies, health measures and the safety of underrepresented groups. This included the  Global Peace Index  and the State Department’s own  travel safety ratings .

While these countries are considered to be overall safe for people to visit, the company noted the report doesn't mean every part of the country is safe nor account for the possibility of natural disasters. And as always, don't let your guard down when it comes to petty theft against tourists.

'It's like your local bestie': This startup helps make solo travel as a woman feel safer

Read below to see the 15 countries determined to be the safest for all travelers.

The Great White North tops this year's list of safest countries in the world for travelers, thanks to its low violent crime and strict gun laws. Last year, the country, known for its high standard of living and political stability, made sixth on the list.

2. Switzerland

Known for its security and low crime rates, Switzerland made second place for the safest nations to visit. The country is known for its high quality of living and beautiful nature, such as Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich.

Besides having some of the best views of the dancing northern lights , Norway is also one of the safest places when it comes to crime rates, terrorist activity and violent demonstrations. According to the report, Oslo, the capital of Norway, was the country's safest area.

Those wanting to see Ireland's Cliffs of Moher or sip on some Guinness can rest assured in going through with those travel plans. The country had fewer homicides in 2022 than 16 U.S. cities, according to the report.

5. Netherlands

Last year, the Netherlands took the top spot for safest destinations to visit, and this year, it made fifth. Survey respondents repeatedly said they felt safe in the country and its capital Amsterdam. Just beware of the tourist tax increase as the city continues to crack down on reckless partiers.

6. United Kingdom

With a beautiful countryside and cities with low murder and theft rates, the United Kingdom is a safe bet for travelers. Unfortunately, the country is soon going to implement a fee to enter its borders .

7. Portugal

There's a reason digital nomads flock to this sunny coastal country, and it's not just the delicious seafood and wine. Portugal's cities are secure and orderly, and the rural areas are peaceful. In 2022, the country was determined to be one of the best places for solo female travelers too.

Last year, Denmark was the second safest country in the world for travelers, and its low crime rates continue to help it be a safe choice for travelers. The northern European country typically steals the spotlight for its happy residents and its politics.

Like its Nordic neighbor Denmark, Iceland is often regarded as the world's most gender-equal country and the safest country in the world when it comes to crime. To entice travelers even more, the country is home to otherworldly landscapes featuring glaciers, geysers, hot springs, waterfalls and volcanic terrain.

10. Australia

Rugged wilderness and cosmopolitan cities make Australia a desirable country for travelers, especially female solo travelers since the Land Down Under also has low homicide rates. In 2022, there were 377 recorded homicides, about half of what Chicago experienced, according to the report.

11. New Zealand

Although expensive, New Zealand is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore its coastlines, mountains, fjords and more, or for those who are big "Lord of the Rings" fans. With low crime rates, the country is also considered to be quite peaceful and great for female solo travelers.

Along with low crime rates, Japan offers travelers a blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity. Think robot servers in restaurants amongst ancient shrines. In Japanese culture, politeness and orderliness are also highly valued, making it a safe place for travelers, solo or not. However, the report doesn't consider natural disasters, such as the earthquakes that recently shook the western part of the island nation.

Home to the City of Light, France has stood the test of time as one of the world's most popular destinations. Thankfully, for travelers, the country has relatively safe transportation (well, minus petty theft, which is common on the metro) and safety from disease epidemics, according to the report. However, violent demonstrations mean travelers should be cautious and check local media for updates.

Another popular European destination, Spain is known for petty theft like pickpocketing. Overall, the Mediterranean country has a low crime rating for how heavily touristed it is, the report said. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection recommends people especially watch out for passport thefts, so as always, travel cautiously.

This year, Brazil made the list of safe countries to visit. The survey respondents who identified as women, people of color and LGBTQ+ especially felt safe in the South American country, known for its beautiful beaches. However, Brazil's borders are notably dangerous for crime activity.

This doesn't mean these are the only places you can travel safely , but they may be a good place to start to find your feet and then you can venture out a bit more.

So let's get into it. Here are 13 of the top safest countries to vist.

Safest countries to travel in the world

the world's safest country

Ranked as the world's  safest countries to travel to , Iceland is a top tier destination for a stress-free trip.

With it's gorgeous mountainous hills, interesting  Nordic culture and friendly people, it truly is a travellers paradise and should definitely be on your bucket list.

One of the best things to do in Iceland includes trying to see the Northern Lights. Due to the countries' low light pollution, the night sky comes alive with stars and the lights take centre stage with their mesmerising dance of green and blue colours, magical!

Another must-do is going to a hot spring to take a dip in naturally heated water, whilst being surrounded by ice!

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in Iceland  like this position to volunteer in a beautiful Guest House with all meals included.

The Danes are said to be the happiest people on Earth, and with the great country they live in, it's easy to see why. The capital city of Denmark, Copenhagen, is probably one of the best places to visit as a solo traveller .

Of course it has its more risky places like Norrebo, but as long as you stay vigilant, you're guaranteed to have a great time.

One of the best things about Denmark is how cycle-friendly it is, meaning you can explore the country at your own pace and feel safe whilst doing so.

Denmark is famously known for it's love of 'Hygge' (pronounced hoo-gah) which essentially sums up that cosy feeling you get when you sit by the fire with a warm drink, surrounded by good company. Wonderful.

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in Denmark  like this awesome Camping accepting volunteers to prepare and serve food in exchange of accommodation, meals and many other amenities!

Before travelling to Denmark, you should read Copenhagen on a budget: a backpacker's travel guide .

4. New Zealand

Safest countries to travel to

New Zealand has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth with the most luscious greenery, inviting coastal beaches and the kindest people. It's known as one of the most peaceful countries in the world, and also one of the least corrupt.

Unlike its neighbour Australia, New Zealand only has a very small number of dangerous animals and insects in the country so you don't have to check your shoes every time you put them on! A great place for those who love the outdoors and a bit of adventure - bungee jumping anyone?

Fun fact: Did you know about the ceremonial Haka dance of New Zealand's Māori people? If you didn't, it's a must-see. A performance of pure heart and soul.

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in New Zealand  like this one to help an Eco Village with gardening where you can stay and explore nature for at least one week.

safest countries for women to travel alone

I'm sure it's no surprise that Canada is on this list. After all, it's well known for it's super friendly people, eh!

I've heard Canada described as almost a wonderland that barely feels real, that's probably partly due to being one of the safest countries to travel to .

The people there are very respectful of both native and travellers, so you can make yourself right at home. Full of incredible nature and beautiful wildlife, Canada is best for outdoor-lovers and adventure-seekers.

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in Canada  like this experience in the mountains where the hosts only need 12 hours per week of help and offer such good amenities to the volunteer.

Home to great food, warm weather and wonderful people, Spain is one of Europe's most loved tourist destinations.

Spaniards are all about helping their community and being there for one another and in general, are very kind people. They love to have a good time and certainly know how to dance! So if you're looking for a fun-filled trip, Spain is a great idea.

The country has a great variety of bustling cities, wonderful mountains and coastlines, but be cautious when visiting the busier cities like Barcelona as pit-pockets are quite common in some areas. Try traditional Spanish tapas, wash it down with some sangria and take a walk along the beach - bliss!

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in Spain  like this retreat needing help with web programming .

7. Portugal

what area in the world's is the most safest country

For somewhere much cheaper, but just as amazing, Portugal is a great destination. With beautiful coastlines, fun cities and warm weather, it has become a very popular tourist destination but yet remains one of the safest countries to travel to.

A good tip is to travel here outside of peak times to enjoy a quieter experience. Be sure to try the delicious Portuguese cuisine , relax on the beach or walk the streets of the cities like Lisbon and Porto.

Portugal is a great place for younger travellers who want an enjoyable, safe trip but without the high price tag.

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in Portugal  to have amazing experiences while helping with content and social media  in a hostel in Lisbon, for example.

thw world's most safest country

Ireland is a fantastic country to visit with some of the friendliest people with plenty of good craic (banter) to keep you entertained.

Visit the rugged coastlines and be taken aback by the scenery, walk the Giants Causeway in Belfast (Northern Ireland is in the UK, but for this blog's sake, we're keeping them together!) or find a good local pub in the heart of Dublin. It may not always have the best weather, but it has some great accents, beautiful views and a good spirit.

Top tip: whether you're in Northern or Southern Ireland, it's best not to bring up the other side of the country because of history. Most will be fine with it, but you don't want to get on the wrong side of somebody.

Make sure to check out Worldpackers work exchange and volunteer programs in Ireland  to seer one of the most beautiful scenery in Europe while helping. This Guest House by the beach is looking for recepcionit, cleaners and housekeepers.

safest countries in the world

Japan is one of the safest Asian countries to travel to with it's highly respectful community and very low crime rates.

It's fairy-tale-like gardens and futuristic high-tech cities make this country one of the most interesting to visit.

It is important when visiting Japan that you respect their culture and abide by any rules when in public places, as they can be quite particular about this. Other than that, it is an incredible country to visit and is a must on your bucket list.

Sigiriya  is a must-visit when travelling Sri Lanka - an enigmatic summit with remains of an ancient palace at the top? Who wouldn't want to see that!

Take a road trip round to the North Coast 500   of Scotland and discover some of the most beautiful mountains and coastlines.

Go surfing and get your relaxation on somewhere like Devon in South West England or visit Pembrokeshire in Wales and be surrounded by nature whilst trying something new like coasteering!

Safety tips for solo travellers

  • Transport - some countries will have better connections and modes of transport which is great, but others won't and may require you to wait around between connections (such as buses from airports). Keep this in mind when booking modes of transport and be sure to stick to public places if you have to wait, such as at a café.
  • Act like a local - being very loud about the fact you're a tourist isn't the best idea as it may attract the wrong crowd. A top tip if you're using something like google maps is to wear earphones and listen to the directions, rather than drawing attention to the fact you're looking at maps.
  • Despite how safe a place might be, it's always good to stay vigilant, especially during the evening. If you do go out at night, be sure to tell someone at your accommodation where you're going, or even better, go with someone you trust.
  • One thing to note about safer countries is that they do tend to be more expensive. It makes sense, the less money a country has, the poorer the life quality and then usually, the less safe it is. However, as long as you stay vigilant and sensible, you'll be fine!

Remember staying vigilant and being a little cautious is never a bad idea.

Hi, I'm sorry you feel this way. The countries are not ranked in any order and I did not state that it was the safest. If you read my bio you will see I am Scottish! I am against any type of violence but unfortunately this happens in pretty much all countries, it is sad but reality.

I am surprised that you have included Sri Lanka in your list. Sri Lanka may be safe for men but not for women. The local women, let alone tourists, get sexually asssulated in public transporation every day. The most of the rapes, specially in rural villages, do not get reported.

According to The Herald (Scotland): "Sri Lanka has had a history of rapes and attacks on foreigners, with emblematic cases such as the murder after the British aid worker Khuram Shaikh was shot and stabbed whilst on holiday, whilst his Russian girlfriend was raped by a Sri Lankan politican." The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office states that “there have been an increasing number of reports of sexual offences including on minors”. “There has been an increase in sexual attacks against females in tourist areas,” it added. “Women should take particular care when travelling alone or in small groups, and carry a personal alarm.”

A Glasgow woman was raped a a hotel worker at a Sri Lankan hotel, Club Bentota Hotel, in 2010. She won a lawsuit at the UK Supreme Court in 2021, against the tour operator, Kuoni. The women became pregnant as a result of the rape.

Why are you so ignorant of sexual assults of female tourists in Sri Lanka? All you had to do is a simple Google search on the subject. Your article gives a false sense of security to women who would travel to Sri Lanka.

Correction of Typo: A Glasgow woman was raped by a hotel worker at a Sri Lankan hotel, Club Bentota Hotel, in 2010. She won a lawsuit in the UK Supreme Court in 2021, against the tour operator, Kuoni. The woman became pregnant as a result of the rape.

Hi Sanath, I really appreciate your comment and thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'm aware that unfortunately, many places are not deemed 'safe' for women to travel alone, if anywhere. It's a very sad reality but I believe that we cannot let our fears take over. I understand this is unrelated to fear and is a literal issue, and I apologise if my article was ignorant to this. My advice is that anyone travelling solo should always take their own precautions and measures to stay safe, but this is the decision of the individual.

I think Lauren your thought process is absolutely correct regarding the preparation of this list...This list is all about relative safety of backpackers compared to other countries, but not the absolute safety...Therfore people should always be vigilant... I guess the main parameter that you have looked at is whether how welcoming the locals are, how supportive they are and how accepting the host culture is...In fact some countries are excessively religious and won't tolerate certain outfits and behaviors of the tourists... In this context, the given list of countries are relatively well suited for the solo travellers...Regarding the comment made by Sanath about Sri Lanka...I think the fellow is grossly misguided and has no clue about this post.. I m British and my girlfriend has traveled to Sri Lanka 7 times as a backpacker and I have been there 3 times. it's a destination that we adore..Mainly due to the fact that their amazingly welcoming nature, supportive attitude and the calming and kind Buddhist culture, like you said... For a country with culture they are highly tolerant towards behaviors of the tourists... Just to recall an incident, my girlfriend lost her purse and the taxi man came looking for her in every hotel in that locality to hand it over.. So I absolutely endorse and appreciate having Sri Lanka in this spot..

' src=

Basic travel wisdom includes an awareness of the dangers and risks inherent in any destination. Countries with historically high terrorism, crime, and violence rates are less likely to be candidates for your next vacation.

The Institute for Economics & Peace is a non-profit international think tank dedicated to shifting the world’s focus to peace as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress. It has recently released the latest report in which they rank countries worldwide as the safest according to the Global Peace Index .

The index considers political and social stability, personal safety and security, public health, economic strength, and access to essential services.

The rankings from many public safety surveys are based on data collected over the past ten years. These surveys are conducted by IEP’s network of over 350 experienced researchers in the public, private and civil sectors. These researchers conduct the world’s most extensive surveys on global conflict, terrorism, militarism, organized crime, weapons proliferation, and corruption. To calculate the GPI, the researchers consider 23 indicators that cover the issues mentioned above.

The results are then compared to previous years’ results to identify and measure any critical changes in these indicators.

Here are the top 15 safest countries to visit according to IEP Global Peace Index Report 2022.

However, due to Covid-19, the crime rate in Jamaica has increased in the last year. So, follow the government advisories and visit only to the tourist places. These are the prime reason why we have included Jamaica in the list of the top 10 safest vacations.

9 Safest Countries in Europe: Ranked by Data (Traveler’s Guide)

' src=

Thinking of traveling to Europe? You’ve chosen well, since it’s considered to be the most peaceful region in the world, having 7 of the most peaceful countries, according to the Global Peace Index.

The safest country in Europe is Iceland. This is based on data from the Global Peace Index. It compares conflict, safety and security, and militarization. Some of the other safest countries in Europe include Ireland, Denmark, and Austria.

In this article, you’ll see the 9 safest and most peaceful countries in the continent of Europe, some travel advisories, and some sights to check out while there. Interestingly, all of these 9 countries come in at the top 15 of safest and most peaceful countries in the world.

PLEASE NOTE:  The following information on safety is not my personal opinion or from my personal experience. This comes from the 2022 Global Peace Index Report from Vision of Humanity ( Download PDF report ), which ranks 163 countries around the world. Any travel warnings listed below have been found on  travel.state.gov .

Safest European Countries: Ranking System

The Global Peace Index uses three main factors (which are divided into 23 indicators) that are assessed, then a score is given. The countries can then be compared based on this standardized set of criteria.

As a quick summary, here are the 3 main sections that determine each country’s score:

  • Ongoing Domestic and Internation Conflict:  Duration and intensity of conflicts, number of deaths, and relationship to neighboring countries are some of the factors looked at.
  • Societal Safety and Security:  Political instability, refugees, terrorism, violent crimes, murders, number of incarcerated, and police are some examples of this section.
  • Militarisation:  Military expenses, armed services personnel, how much contributed to UN peacekeeping missions, and nuclear and heavy weapons capabilities are some points that contribute here.

The lower the score, the safer the country is considered, and the higher it is on the list. Here’s a handy map to visualize the safety of all the countries listed in the GPI.

The guide is part of an ongoing series covering the best destinations around the world.

The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2022

From far-flung destinations to hometown favorites, 2022 is the year to get back out there and turn your dream trips into reality.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Planning new adventures as a new year approaches is always a thrill, but finding the best places to visit in 2022 is unique. After two years of border closures, cruise cancellations, and travel restrictions galore , 2022 is the year we hope to get back out there, uninhibited (albeit vaccinated and COVID tested ), return to our favorite destinations, and cross new ones off our lists.

Though the hospitality industry was hit hard by the pandemic, many properties used the forced downtime to renovate rooms, add new amenities, and expand outdoor spaces to offer even more once guests return. 2022 is when many travelers will venture further from home, and even overseas, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, finally reaping the benefits of these valiant efforts.

Although COVID variants remain, regulations are still evolving, and precautions must still be taken, many of the destinations we chose for 2022 offer what we believe travelers are looking for in a post-pandemic world, from hotels with private accommodations to destinations teeming with fresh-air activities . Others, like Las Vegas, are for those who are ready and raring to make up for all the social time they missed — with a few splashy headliners, including Adele and the Raiders, thrown in for good measure.

As cruising makes its comeback , we included unforgettable places to see by water, from Antarctica to the Nile, and as hard-hit destinations like Italy and Asia recover, we found the buzziest reasons to return. Of course we didn't forget about all the stateside gems we got to know while domestic travel was surging, from Alaska and California to Florida and Michigan.

Our 2022 list, organized alphabetically, doesn't hold back, with aspirational trips as far away as India, Mozambique, Qatar, and even space — but we're also including hometown favorites, like Walt Disney World and its new Star Wars hotel ; the wellness retreats of beautiful Sedona; and the simple pleasures of small-town, farm-to-table living in Franklin, Tennessee. Because no matter what type of trip you've been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2022 into the year you get back out there and make it a reality.

1. Abruzzo, Italy

Stretching from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea on the peninsula's southeastern side, Abruzzo, Italy has long been one of the country's most overlooked destinations despite its unspoiled villages, picturesque Trabocchi Coast, and stunning natural escapes. Over the past few years, however, it has gone from a sleepy underdog to an ambitious harbinger of slow travel, sustainable gastronomy, and conscious hospitality. Villa Corallo , a 19th-century mansion near Civitella del Tronto was transformed into a five-star hotel in 2019. Dimore Montane , an eco-lodge opened in 2020 in Majella National Park, marries glamping with environmentally-friendly facilities with a zero waste policy. Meanwhile, restaurants like Bottega Culinaria in San Vito Chietino and Materia Prima in Castel di Sangro are redefining the region as one of Italy's most exciting food hotspots for their innovative and sustainable takes on local produce and traditional dishes (in case Niko Romito's three-Michelin-starred Reale wasn't enough). And completing construction this Spring is Via Verde dei Trabocchi: a cycling and pedestrian path along the Adriatic sea that's being built on a disused railway route. — Marianna Cerini

With many international borders closed over the last two years, many eager U.S. travelers' eyes turned to Alaska. The vast state, famous for its towering, snow-capped peaks, pristine wilderness, massive national parks, and colorful locals, made for a dynamic destination with no passport required. But as borders reopen, interest in the 49th state is showing no signs of slowing down. Alaska's tourism board said early forecasts are projecting that more than 1.57 million cruise ship passengers could visit southeast Alaska in summer 2022. That's an 18% jump from 2019, the previous record year. Many perennial favorite cruise lines , like Holland America, will be returning to full strength after a non-existent 2020 and abbreviated 2021. Others, like Windstar Cruises, UnCruise, and Hurtigruten are rolling out fresh itineraries or are launching new ships. On dry land, Alaska is set to see myriad new offerings and events. In Juneau, the Sealaska Heritage Institute will open their Arts Campus (where visitors will be able to learn about Alaska Native art and culture) and will host Celebration , one of the largest gatherings of Indigenous peoples. In Anchorage, Fur Rendezvous , Alaska's oldest and largest winter festival, will be back from Feb. 25 to March 6 (which also happens to be peak aurora season ). The event hosts activities like the Running of the Reindeer and the Outhouse Races, before culminating with the 50th running of the iconic Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race . — Bailey Berg

3. Anguilla

This easy-going Caribbean gem is simpler than ever to get to with American Airlines launching the first-ever nonstop, direct flight from Miami on Dec. 11. Private charter flights by Tradewind Aviation have also resumed service to the island. And the just-opened Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club has a fleet of jets to ferry guests from key U.S. cities. The sprawling luxury resort will include a few restaurants overseen by chef Abram Bissell, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, The NoMad, and The Modern. Quintessence , a boutique luxury resort with perks like butler service and a 4:1 staff-to-guest ratio, is opening a more affordable annex of suites called Quinn that will debut in 2022 (along with a Champagne cellar tasting room and Art Bar). New Restaurant Uchu at Belmond Cap Juluca is taking inspiration from Belmond's collection of properties in Peru. Named after the Quechuan word for spice, the menu will feature contemporary Peruvian cuisine inspired by three of the country's regions: the coast, the jungle, and the highlands. — Scott Bay

4. Antarctica

The pandemic shutdown created a compelling reason to visit Antarctica in 2022: See how the whales, seals, and penguins react after nearly two years without seeing humans. New polar-class expedition ships and new ways to get to the White Continent are reasons to pack your boots too. Viking Expeditions will be in Antarctica for the first time in 2022 with new, twin 378-passenger expedition ships. Ponant's new 270-passenger Le Commandant Charcot introduces eco-friendlier sailing, as the first hybrid-electric ship fueled by liquified natural gas (rather than heavy fuel). Quark Expeditions' long-awaited 199-passenger Ultramarine delivers exciting heli-hiking adventures via two eight-seat twin-engine helicopters. Hit a craps table in between icy exploration on the luxurious new all-suite 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor . Silversea Cruises' posh, 144-passenger, all-suite Silver Explorer returns with a debut travel option: Skip the notorious (for rough water) Drake Passage and catch a private flight directly from Chile to Antarctica to board the ship. — Fran Golden

American travelers have long loved the Bahamas for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and sunshine just about 50 miles off the coast of Florida, but there are even more reasons to visit the island nation in 2022. Baha Mar on the Island of New Providence has a brand new water park equipped with everything from a lazy river to a surf simulator, and day passes are available for purchase to those who aren't resort guests. For more rest and relaxation, journey to the outer islands of the Bahamas. While charter flights will get you exactly where you need to go, Crystal Cruises is offering a Bahamas-centric cruise that brings guests to some of the quieter and more remote islands. On its mid-July cruise, guests will embark and disembark from Nassau and then be whisked away via "6-star" service to the islands of Bimini, Great Exuma, San Salvador, and Long Island. Beyond the beach, don't forget to indulge in some local food and culture. The Island archipelago is famous for its conch, stew fish, and rock lobster. From late April through early May, Carnival is celebrated in Nassau and back after a pandemic hiatus. Keep an eye out for the famous sound and dance of the junkanoo. — Jamie Aranoff

6. Barbados

Whether you want a relaxing all-inclusive stay or a vibrant vacation filled with dining and nightlife, Barbados has you covered. Nowhere is that more evident than the pedestrian-friendly South Coast, which is teeming with new resorts and restaurants. The O2 Beach Club & Spa is an all-inclusive resort set on the white sands of Dover Beach, with three pools, six dining options, seven bars, and the Acqua spa, featuring the only hammam treatment room on the island. It joins other luxurious South Coast hotels, including Sandals and Sea Breeze Beach House . If you can pull yourself away from the resort pools, head along the coast to Worthing Square Food Garden, an outdoor food hall with 20 vendors serving dishes from around the Caribbean. Or stroll down the mile-long boardwalk for easy access to ocean-front food and drinks at local favorites like Champers, Salt Café, Tiki Bar, and Chill Café & Bar. — Kevin Gray

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

A favorite of adventure travelers for its rainforests and divers who explore the Great Blue Hole and expansive barrier reef, Belize offers an abundance of casual spots and a handful of luxe resorts. The latest arrival is Alaia Belize, an Autograph Collection Hotel , in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, opened mid-2021 with plans to add to its already extensive guest room, suite, and oceanfront villa accommodations. Major airlines are also recognizing the destination's potential with nonstop flights and convenient connections from most U.S. cities. In addition to United and Delta's nonstop flights from Houston and Atlanta, respectively, Alaska Airlines added nonstop service from Los Angeles and Seattle to Belize City in November, and Frontier Airlines will start weekly nonstop flights from Denver and Orlando. — Patricia Doherty

8. Budapest, Hungary

Very few places in the world capture both old-world charm and elegant modernity like Hungary's capital city, and Budapest's latest 130-room luxury hotel, Matild Palace , is a shining example. The neo-baroque palace-turned-hotel, which opened last summer in the city's District V, is a UNESCO-protected site that once housed the city's royalty. The hotel is now home to Wolfgang Punk's famed restaurant, Spago , the first of its kind in central Europe. It also hosts the Duchess bar — a rooftop "liquor library" that mixes craft cocktails using local wines and pálinka, Hungarian fruit brandy, which can be enjoyed alongside panoramic views of the Danube river. Surrounded by 22 wine regions, Budapest is a city for oenophiles. Enjoy a glass of Kékfrankos or Kadarka in the Castle District's newly opened wine bar, Takler Borbár Buda , founded by one of the country's renowned winemaking families. Don't leave the city without visiting Marlou , a biodynamic wine bar near the Hungarian State Opera, and Portobello , an unassuming coffee and natural wine bar around the corner from Matild Palace. — Stephanie Andrews

9. Burgundy, France

The region of Burgundy is known for — you guessed it — its Burgundy wine, but French wine isn't the only reason Burgundy is a must-visit in 2022. In the spring, the region's capital city of Dijon will welcome the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin (International City of Gastronomy and Wine), an expansive complex with a cooking school, a new hotel, a handful of restaurants, and a wine cellar with over 250 by-the-glass offerings. The new project is perfectly situated at the starting point of Burgundy's famed wine route — Route des Grands Crus — which runs from Dijon to Santenay and produces some of the country's most well-regarded wines, including pinot noir, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc. — Evie Carrick

10. British Virgin Islands

Within the Caribbean, the 60 islands that comprise the British Virgin Islands have long held the reputation of luxury draped in relaxation. And now it's doubling down on that brand of island spirit with Richard Branson's second private island, the 125-acre Moskito Island that opened in October and sits right across from his first BVI paradise, Necker Island (which received a serious upgrade when it reopened last year after a two-year closure). The new destination will eventually have 10 private estates that can be rented through Virgin Limited Edition , but among the ones already available are Point Estate, starting at $17,500 a night, and Oasis Estate for $19,000. But Moskito isn't the only shiny new reason to visit BVI. Proving the area's resilience following the devastation after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Saba Rock , the private island long known for its diving, went through a complete reconstruction before reopening in October; the Bitter End Yacht Club reopened in December with BVI's first over-the-water bungalows; and Oil Nut Bay will expand in early 2022 with new villas, a watersports center, and spa. Also on tap for 2022, the solar-powered White Bay Villas and new hilltop suites at Long Bay Beach Resort . And with the Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival returning in the spring of 2022 after being canceled for two years, BVI is proving it's truly back and stronger than ever. — Rachel Chang

11. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

You're likely to glimpse Europe's pro athlete and yachting crowds at Marriott's four hotels on the Costa Smeralda, the glitzy Italian destination known for its Caribbean-like beaches and luxury resorts. Its glamorous Hotel Cala di Volpe has gradually been unveiling room renovations alongside new dining options, including its Harrods Suite, with a roof terrace and sea-facing plunge pool, and BeefBar 's first Italian outpost. The entire area is one big " Billionaire Experience ," but Formula One and entertainment mogul Flavio Briatore snagged the term for his new dining and nightlife venue in designer shopping destination Porto Cervo. For more of a low-key, family-friendly escape, the Baglioni Resort Sardinia opened an hour south in San Teodoro in June, overlooking the stunning Tavolara Marine Reserve . — Nina Ruggiero

12. Crete, Greece

The Greek Islands have long been a perennial favorite vacation destination for discerning travelers, and Crete, the largest of the 227 islands in the archipelago, deserves a spot atop your must-see list. Yes, it's a place where you can find the white-washed buildings and blue roofs you've lusted after on Instagram for years, and a spot where you can dive into the cerulean blue waters of the Mediterranean at every turn. And of course you can dig deep into both history and mythology as humans have lived on the island since the 7th millennium B.C ., not to mention the fact that Crete is the birthplace of Zeus . It's little surprise then, with all this beauty and history, that Crete continues to harbor a rich creative community, mostly centered in the neighborhood of Chania. There, visitors can peruse works in museums like the Mediterranean Architecture Center , or seek out unique pieces in galleries like the Municipal Art Gallery or the Redd Gallery . To visit Crete, hop aboard a sailing with Silversea , which takes guests to Crete and several other stellar islands, or book a stay at the Blue Palace Elounda, a Luxury Collection Resort , named one of the Top 10 Greece Resort Hotels in Travel + Leisure 's World's Best Awards, 2021. — Stacey Leasca

14. Doha, Qatar

As we ask ourselves what cities of the future should look like, we naturally look around for examples. Places like Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York City seem to fit the description on paper, but I'd argue that no city better encapsulates that definition than Doha, the capital of Qatar. There is so much to discover — from East-West/West-East , a series of four steel monoliths created by sculptor Richard Serra to the Museum of Islamic Art , the massive 560,000-square-foot gallery. Eat at Syrian comfort food spot Damasca One, Em Sherif a rooftop spot that serves up authentic regional dishes, and the lively corner restaurant Nourlaya Contemporary for Sri Lankan cuisine. Stay at the Mandarin Oriental Doha or Banyan Tree Doha . (Read Robinson's full dispatch on Doha in the July 2021 edition of Travel + Leisure) — Whitney Robinson

Inns of Aurora , comprising five historic mansions, debuted a holistic wellness facility in 2021 — set on 350 acres overlooking Cayuga Lake, complete with hydrotherapy pools, meditation areas, and a farm fresh cafe. Forty miles west of Cayuga, The Lakehouse on Canandaigua — situated on, yes, Canandaigua Lake — recently unveiled the Willowbrook Spa, which boasts lakeside barrel sauna sessions among other innovative treatments. Sandwiched between Cayuga and Canandaigua lakes is Seneca Lake, home to the largest of the Finger Lakes wine trails (this might be riesling country, but don't knock the lighter-bodied reds till you try 'em) and foodie draws like the 14-seat F.L.X. Table . Travelers visiting in the coming year will also see the Finger Lakes festival roster return in full force, including Rochester's Lilac Festival in May and International Jazz Festival in July, as well as attractions for the historically inclined road tripper, like Cayuga County's celebration of Harriet Tubman's birth through a number of walking tours and activations rolled out through 2022. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

17. Franklin, Tennessee

Despite its count of more than 80,000 year-round residents, the very walkable Franklin firmly grasps onto its small-town charms , starting with a quintessentially quaint downtown chock-full of shops and restaurants finding shelter in brick storefronts lining the sidewalks. The uninitiated might know this place for its past — Civil War museums, battleground sites, and historical markers telling the stories of a slave market, race riots, and Black soldiers in the U.S. Colored Troop division of the army all offer points of education and reflection. But the southern city has many modern-day draws as well — for starters, an exciting food and drink scene that includes the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and Arrington Vineyards , the largest winery in the region. Musical events and venues abound, too: The Pilgrimage Music Festival is one of the biggest in the state, and the 7,500-seat FirstBank Amphitheater , newly opened inside a former rock quarry, has welcomed the likes of the Jonas Brothers and Santana to its stage. There's also Leiper's Fork , a quirky-cool enclave filled with antique shops and art galleries. Even more brand-new to the scene is Southall , a 325-acre farm and inn with 62 rooms and suites and 16 cottages opening this June. The lush setting amid rolling hills makes active adventures (hiking, biking, kayaking), wellness pursuits (a spa, meditation, yoga, and two outdoor pools), and nourishing food (the restaurant uses ingredients grown, raised, and foraged on the property) easy to find. All of this and more lie just a short, 30-minute drive from bustling Nashville, making it tempting to tack onto a visit to the capital city. — Alisha Prakash

18. Galápagos Islands

Come January, travelers can cruise this UNESCO-protected region on new nine-day adventures from Hurtigruten Expeditions and outfitter Metropolitan Touring aboard the 90-guest carbon-neutral MS Santa Cruz II. Those with timid sea legs should check into the locally owned and run Montemar in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. — Nora Walsh

19. Greater Palm Springs, California

21. Ilha Caldeira, Mozambique

While South Africa and Uganda grab headlines for African wildlife, Mozambique has been quietly making strides protecting 17 percent of its land — including beaches, coral reefs, and islands — showcasing its dedication to its natural beauty both on land and underwater. Ever since the country's 16-year civil war ended in 1992, the southeastern African nation has been aiming to build back in the right ways. Case in point: the private island of Ilha Caldeira, less than seven miles off the coast as part of the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, located within the marine-protected area with 20 percent of the country's intact living coral. It's here that the eco-luxury Banyan Tree resort chain has developed one of its most ambitious projects yet, a five-star property — accessible by jetty or helicopter — with 40 private pool villas that will be completely solar powered. Add to that a fish market restaurant with a 270-degree ocean view, the brand's trademark Banyan Tree Spa, and world-class diving, all in a too-pristine-to-believe beach setting, and this island escape is sure to draw attention away from its Indian Ocean neighbors when it opens at the end of 2022. — Rachel Chang

25. Kyushu, Japan

Kyushu may be less than two hours from Tokyo by plane, but it feels far from Honshū's well-beaten tourist circuit. The southwesternmost Japanese main island is still largely unexplored, providing those willing to venture off the beaten path with a much different Japan than the one they'll find in its cities. As a warm, subtropical island, Kyushu is home to long, golden beaches and some of Japan's best snorkeling and scuba diving. Inland, the country's most active volcano, Mt. Aso, feeds the island's myriad natural hot springs — many of which offer sea views. And while the island has accommodations that include both hot spring resorts and luxury beachfront villas , nothing tops a stay at Hirado Castle , which was recently restored and renovated to welcome visitors overnight . — Evie Carrick

Not that there's anything wrong with splashing out on dinner and a show after the past two years. Live acts — like Adele's just-announced residency at The Colosseum — are once again hot tickets, as is a table at chic new supper club Delilah , at the Wynn Las Vegas. Some things, thankfully, never change. — Paul Brady

There is no trip that will convert you to a life of river cruising quite like a sail down (well, technically, up) the Nile. In fact, the world's first river cruises sailed in Egypt, a country designed around the central waterway, where it makes sense that the Nile would act as your home base. A typical Egyptian river cruise sets sail from Cairo to Luxor and then Aswan, with the occasional stop to visit an island temple along the way — complete with sights like the Pyramids, Valley of Kings and Queens, Nefertari's tomb, and the Temple of Kom Ombo. In 2022, there's more than one new river cruise to choose from, between Uniworld's newly launched S.S. Tourists first flocked to the mountain town in 1864 , when hotelier Johannes Badrutt took a few British travelers to the community, promising them bluebird days all winter. It wasn't long until others learned about this hidden winter oasis. Skiers and winter sports enthusiasts flocked to the mountain, which has now hosted the Winter Olympic Games not once, but twice. It's an ideal place for ski bunnies too, thanks to its luxury shopping, and its numerous Michelin-starred restaurants . This winter, head to St. Moritz for its fantastic events like White Surf (Feb. 6, 13, and 20, 2022), an international horse race that takes place across the frozen Lake St. Moritz, and the Snow Polo World Cup (Jan. 28-30, 2022), which happens to be the world's only high-goal tournament on snow. Book a stay at the Badrutt's Palace Hotel , which officially reopened on Dec. 3 for the 2021/2022 season and offers guests the chance to try their hand at high-octane winter sports like skijöring, snowkiting, tobogganing, and even private helicopter tours to the peaks of Piz Bernina and Piz Palü. — Stacey Leasca

46. St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida

The beaches of St. Petersburg and nearby Clearwater are consistently ranked among the best in the U.S. and even the world , but there's more to this destination than white sand, pristine waters, and 361 days of sunshine per year. St. Pete/Clearwater offers more than 30 museums and galleries featuring world-renowned artists like Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso, as well as the largest collection of Salvador Dalí's work outside of Spain. One could say brewing the perfect beer is also an artform that St. Pete/Clearwater has mastered, with its trail of 35+ locally owned craft breweries. Playfully nicknamed the " Gulp Coast ," complete your experience with a digital passport that tracks your beer-sampling progress. These year-round offerings mean you can visit any time, but head over in June 2022 to revel in the 20th anniversary of St. Pete Pride , the largest Pride event in Florida, hosting events for everyone from friends and families to couples and solo travelers. — Jessica Poitevien

47. Todos Santos, Mexico

Todos Santos is one of Mexico's pueblo mágicos, or "magic towns," and locals are working to retain its history and culture while embracing the steady stream of travelers who have begun venturing an hour north of Cabo San Lucas to discover its charm. The area saw a handful of new boutique resorts pop up in 2021 that provide luxury amenities while keeping the rugged land and local flora the centerpiece. Wellness-focused Paradero describes itself as a "landscaping project" that just so happens to have luxurious suites, and El Perdido , an all-villa resort less than five miles south, provides all-terrain vehicles so visitors can get to Los Cerritos beach, the local surf break of choice. Oceanfront Rancho Pescadero 's multimillion-dollar transformation will be complete in the spring. Bookings for its oceanfront villas and penthouse rooms — some with private rooftops and plunge pools — open in January. Todos Santos has fully embraced farm-to-table dining, with Javier Plascencia's orchard-adjacent Jazamango leading the way, and Santa Terra , a cosmopolitan oyster bar meets arts and entertainment venue concept, is in the process of adding multiple bars and restaurants, plus a glamping site and amphitheater, according to its developer, "without chopping down a single tree." — Nina Ruggiero

48. Udaipur, India

After an extremely challenging 20-month closure, India reopened to vaccinated travelers on Nov. 15, 2021. Those looking toward South Asia in the new year, perhaps to see the Taj Mahal in Agra or hit the Goan beaches, should make sure Udaipur is on the itinerary. The city of lakes in southern Rajasthan is thought of as the most romantic Indian destination (even called the "Venice of the East") — but it's not just for honeymooners. From the vibrance of Hathi Pol bazaar and Shilpgram , an artisanal compound on the outskirts of the city with a festival set to return on Jan. 22, to the serenity of Lake Pichola, the artificial lake made in the 14th century, Udaipur is a city where you can fully immerse in Rajasthani culture. A hub of Indian luxury, Udaipur is now home to the country's first Raffles hotel, which opened in October. This private island hotel on Udai Sagar Lake is accessible only by boat — something of a trademark for the over-the-top hotels of Udaipur. Meant to be a flagship hotel in the Raffles portfolio, complete with brand staples (think: bars, both Long and Writers), 101 lavish suites, Rasoi cooking school, and lakeside open-air restaurant Belvedere Point. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

49. Wales, United Kingdom

The only path in the world to follow the whole of a country's coastline, the Wales Coastal Path celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022. Walking its 870 miles would take three months, but its most spectacular stretches can be seen in one visit — and in style. St David's in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, is Britain's smallest city with a mere population of 1,600 and is home to a Medieval cathedral , a luxury hotel inside Roch Castle , some excellent pubs, and the upscale St David's Gin & Kitchen . Hiking paths with unbeatable coastal vistas are within easy reach (try the St David's Head loop ) and pass neolithic tombs and hillforts. — Jamie Carter

50. Yucatán, Mexico

Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán, has emerged as one of Mexico's most popular cities thanks to its lively restaurant scene, a busy calendar of cultural events, and a relaxed tropical atmosphere. Increasingly, however, travelers are venturing beyond the city to explore the state's unspoiled nature reserves, ancient Maya sites, and sprawling haciendas — a number now converted into hotels. Among the destinations that are drawing travelers to Yucatán are El Cuyo, a quiet beach town that was long a closely guarded secret of windsurfers. Now visitors can also enjoy gourmet Mexican fare at the El Chile Gordo restaurant and boho-chic lodgings at the new Casa Mate . In Espita, a charming colonial town near Valladolid, is the Casona los Cedros hotel which opened in summer 2021. Sisal, a historic port in the western part of the state, has attracted new interest since being named a Pueblo Mágico at the end of 2020. A new highway completed in April now connects Sisal to Hunucmá (and then beyond to Mérida) making it easier for beachcombers to visit, and perhaps spend the night at the cool Club de Patos . — John Newton

51. Bonus: Space

This was a monumental year for human spaceflight — not only did NASA and SpaceX achieve a regular cadence of astronaut launches for the first time since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, but space tourism has also lifted off in a major way, making space a top destination to visit in 2022. And it's a realistic trip, too, so long as you have the budget for it. Both Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic succeeded in taking passengers to space on short suborbital hops this year, and each company plans to ramp up those flights in 2022 — Virgin Galactic already has more than 600 bookings. The price for a quick jaunt to space? A few hundred thousand dollars . If you have an even bigger budget (say, a couple hundred million dollars), you could charter your own orbital flight in a SpaceX Dragon Capsule, as did entrepreneur Jared Issacman with his Inspiration4 mission in September. There are also tourism trips to the International Space Station in the works; Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa launches on his multi-day journey in December, courtesy of space travel agency Space Adventures and Russia's Roscosmos space agency, which plans to take even more " citizen space explorers " to the orbiting laboratory in the near future. Of course, not everyone has pockets deep enough to cover space travel, but more affordable journeys are on the horizon. Startup Space Perspective plans to launch high-altitude balloon rides to the edge of space in 2024 , for the relatively low price of $125,000. Potential dealbreaker, though — the balloons don't actually reach space, maxing out at 100,000 feet in altitude, while space is considered to begin somewhere between 264,000 feet (50 miles) and 327,360 feet (62 miles). But hey, at least there's a bar on board. — Stefanie Waldek

The Safest Central American Countries To Visit

C entral America is a destination full of attractions and varying landscapes. The region is incredibly photogenic so travelers will not miss out on photo opportunities. It is full of thriving nature, friendly locals, delectable cuisine and exciting adventures. Central America is a hub for biodiversity, so it is also an ecological treasure to many. Over 20 million people visit Central America per year. And that number does not seem to be slowing down any time soon since the destination is becoming more popular.

Although Central America is a popular travel destination , to some, it has a slightly negative reputation for danger. The perceived danger for tourists has come from film depictions and political unrest. But some countries in Central America are more dangerous than others and there are plenty of safe places to visit. So, travelers should do their own research so they do not miss out on what Central America has to offer. Staying informed is a vital step to ensuring travelers enjoy safe and secure journeys abroad. To aid traveler’s plans to go abroad we have gathered the information they should know about the safest Central American countries.

Safest Countries in Central America

Generally, the top issue for tourists visiting Central America is theft. This crime happens all over the world but is more prevalent in certain places, so in safer areas there is even less to worry about. The northern Central American countries often experience more violent crime. So it is advisable for travelers to avoid visiting the countries with higher crime rates. Check out this guide with the safest Central American countries that travelers should visit.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is commonly known as Central America’s safest country. It has lower crime levels, a more stable economy and a reputation as a peaceful nation. The country also provides a high quality of life to its citizens. Costa Rica does not even have an army and the country is a democracy, so it is a pretty safe destination. It even ranks high in the Global Peace Index . In 2023, it ranked as the 39th country (out of 163 ranked countries) according to its levels of safety and security, extent of domestic or international conflict and degree of militarization.

Costa Rica’s strong safety record allows travelers to explore the country securely. So there is plenty for travelers to do while visiting. The country is known for its fantastic national parks and wildlife. Manuel Antonio National Park and Poas Volcano National Park are among the most popular conservationist areas in Costa Rica. Cave tubing, zip lining and river rafting are some of the popular activities that travelers can enjoy at the parks. Some animal lovers prefer to have as many interactions with surrounding wildlife as possible. In that case, Costa Rica is the perfect place to be since it is an industry leader in ecotourism. Travelers can expect to see sea turtles, sloths and squirrel monkeys at any moment.

Panama is considered a safe destination due to its well lit and well patrolled cities. Technically, Panama is ranked as number 68 on the Global Peace Index, so it is not as safe as Costa Rica . But it is still, relatively, one of the safest places to travel to in Central America. Although the country is certainly not crime free, there are safe areas to stay in. Boquete and Coronado are popular places to stay in Panama with high safety levels and low crime rates. The cities of Panama are considered safe, so travelers that prefer to stay in urban areas will feel comfortable.

Panama has a diverse landscape. So travelers can encounter the desert, rainforests and beaches all in one trip. The lush tropical surroundings are only a part of the country’s overall tourism appeal. Panama has delicious cuisine. Some of the popular local dishes include rondón, gaucho, carimañolas and tamales. This country is also a great destination for backpacking or other outdoor activities, since the wildlife and natural environment is robust. Travelers can snorkel, fish, scuba dive and whale watch in Panama.

Belize

Belize is a small Central American country on the east coast with a welcoming atmosphere. The destination is considered a relatively safe place to travel. Although the country experiences some crime , Belize is considered a safe place to visit. Because the country is so small, travelers will notice that it is not ranked in the Global Peace Index. But this exclusion does not mean that travelers should overlook Belize as a travel destination. As long as travelers exercise safety precautions in Belize, they are likely to have a safe and exciting trip to Central America. Some of the safest parts of Belize include Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Pedro.

Visitors of Belize can experience an authentic cultural exchange where they can tap into the history, cuisine and ecotourism of the country. Nature-based tourism is a popular way for tourists to get to know the intriguing country. For example, the eco-tourism park Inland Blue Hole and St Herman’s Cave are great places to visit. There is also a wealth of knowledge about the Mayan roots of Belize that travelers should learn. There are even countless tours that teach visitors of the rich Mayan culture and explore the Mayan ruins around the country. The most popular cultural excursion is the Altun Ha ruins, but there are plenty of adventurous activities and unique adventures in Belize.

What to know about Schengen zone, Europe’s ‘border-free’ travel system

Schengen countries allow international travelers to move freely across borders without additional passport checks.

safe countries to travel to 2022

Europe’s “border-free” Schengen zone has added travel protections for two more countries, making it easier for more people to explore the southeastern region of the continent.

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined the Schengen area on Sunday, which means visitors who arrive by air or sea from other countries in the zone can cross their borders without an ID check. Land borders will remain subject to ID checks because of opposition led by Austria, which has long cited irregular migration as a concern when it comes to welcoming the two Eastern European states into the Schengen agreement. The move comes more than a decade after Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union.

The European Commission had previously recommended that Bulgaria and Romania be admitted to join the Schengen zone, starting in 2011 and most recently in 2023. A combination of internal problems in the two countries and opposition from other countries citing irregular migration concerns — especially after the so-called “migrant crisis” of 2015 — meant they were caught in “Schengen purgatory” until now, according to Leon Züllig, a researcher and Schengen expert at Germany’s Justus Liebig University Giessen.

Is it safe to fly during the solar eclipse? Here’s what experts have to say

Aviation officials are taking precautions ahead of the solar eclipse to ensure that flights run smoothly..

A plane passes by the The 99 percent Harvest moon on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023 in Dallas.

If you need to fly in the afternoon of April 8, you might want to grab a pair of solar eclipse glasses.

Airlines and government officials say it is safe to travel during the April 8 once-in-a-lifetime event. The Federal Aviation Administration is forecasting 47,137 flights to operate on April 8 .

Health officials are warning eclipse viewers to wear protective eyewear, and that doesn’t rule out travelers. The sun’s intense brightness can damage eyes in seconds. It’ll be damaged even quicker at more than 30,000 feet in the air, said Eric Christian, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and an eclipse expert.

“The sun will be a little bit brighter, but you shouldn’t ever look at it except during totality without either approved eclipse glasses or in the correct pinhole camera,” Christian said. “Even the smallest little piece of the sun sticking out can actually damage your retina. Be very careful.”

Experts say travelers flying along the path of totality, from Mexico into the northeastern United States and Canada, may experience a longer eclipse from the clouds based on how much closer they are to the sun. Totality in Dallas will last just under 4 minutes, though the exact duration depends on location. Christian estimates travelers flying along the path of totality to receive roughly 10 minutes of totality and a longer partial eclipse.

Several airlines have announced and marketed “solar eclipse flights,” which are special flights flying along the path of totality that have the highest chances of a great view from the clouds. Among these airlines are Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Dallas’ JSX.

Related: Where to see the April 8 total solar eclipse in the D-FW area

Christian recommended, when it comes to photographing the eclipse, that passengers leave it to the professionals.

“The eclipse is a really unique thing, and the best thing to do is to watch it during totality and let your eyes get accustomed to it,” he said.

According to Southwest, its operational teams — anyone from pilots, flight attendants, tech operations, ground operations and network operations control workers — are in full communication regarding the eclipse. Employees are all advised to wear protective eyewear. The FAA has also offered guidance to commercial planes and private aircraft ahead of flights.

“In advance of a solar eclipse, the FAA asks airlines and pilots flying under air traffic control to plan ahead and file a preferred route ,” the FAA said in an emailed statement. “Advanced planning will minimize route changes and help the FAA better manage the flow of traffic in busy airspace, resulting in fewer delays.”

The FAA is also advising pilots flying on April 8 that regular activities such as practice approaches and pilot training operations at airports in the eclipse path will be limited and possibly prohibited during the event.

All Southwest flights flying through the path of totality will have eclipse viewing glasses. Delta is providing solar eclipse glasses in a partnership with retailer Warby Parker for its two path-of-totality flights.

Southwest’s air traffic management team also has been meeting regularly with the Federal Aviation Administration and doesn’t anticipate any widespread effect on operations. However, the forecast isn’t looking very bright for the millions of people looking forward to the event. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth predicted North Texas would be “cloudier than normal.”

Christian said flights along the path of totality “won’t be able to avoid all the serious weather.” He said light fluffy, high-altitude clouds tend not to be very much of a problem, but it’s the low-lying heavy clouds that matter for viewing purposes.

All in all, Christian said it is safe to fly during the eclipse. Pilots, aviation officials and those involved with flights on April 8 won’t compromise safety to get the best views.

“Plane travel is very safe, and they’re not going to risk people’s lives to get a little more of the eclipse,” Christian said.

Rachel Crandall-Crocker is a psychotherapist and the executive director of the advocacy group Transgender Michigan. She also runs the Transgender Michigan help line.

This Sunday, people from Kosovo to the Netherlands to the U.S. are organizing events to celebrate the transgender and nonbinary community — marking the 15th year of International Transgender Visibility Day.

Its founder, Rachel Crandall-Crocker, a psychotherapist and the executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Transgender Michigan, still can't believe it.

"It really is amazing how far it has come," she told NPR. "I wasn't expecting to start an international movement."

More than 1.6 million people in the U.S. identify as transgender, according to a 2022 study from the Williams Institute, a research center at UCLA's law school.

3 generations of trans Americans reflect on what has (and hasn't) changed

This weekend's celebrations come as trans people's rights have become increasingly restricted across the U.S. in recent years. Several states have passed bills restricting or banning gender-affirming care for trans youth, and there's also been a wave of legislation against trans athletes and drag queen performers.

A day to prioritize joy with community

In 2009, Crandall-Crocker wanted a reason to come together and feel joy with other members of the trans community.

At the time, the only holiday she knew of geared toward trans people was Transgender Day of Remembrance, on Nov. 20, dedicated to honoring the lives lost to anti-transgender violence.

"I wanted a day that we could focus on the living," Crandall-Crocker said. "And where we could have rallies all as one community all the way around the world."

That idea turned into International Transgender Day of Visibility, which falls on March 31 every year. Crandall-Crocker said she chose the springtime date because she wanted some distance from Transgender Day of Remembrance as well as Pride Month, which is in June.

In the first year, groups in only a handful of cities in the U.S. celebrated. But Crandall-Crocker, with the help of Susan Crocker, her wife and Transgender Michigan's operations director, continued to raise awareness about the day and its purpose.

Trans advocates from around the world caught on, launching rallies, block parties and festivals rooted in trans joy. In recent years, the U.S. government has recognized International Transgender Day of Visibility, and skyscrapers across the country have lit up with the colors of the transgender flag — light pink, light blue and white.

Crandall-Crocker, who has Tourette syndrome, said organizing International Transgender Day of Visibility taught her an invaluable lesson: "You do not have to perfect to change the world."

"I have a disability," she added. "However, I changed the world. You don't have to be perfect. Come and change it along with me."
