Why a Caledonian Canal cruise should be your next holiday

Eager to explore the Caledonian Canal? Here’s how to book a cruise on the luxurious Lord of the Glens ship

red boat, caledonian canal, corpach 2

With trails, a towpath and plenty of jetties and pontoons, holidays to this picturesque part of the world often revolve around cycling, walking and boating. But for the ultimate slice of luxury with that general sense of everything being taken care of, it’s worth considering a cruise.

If Caledonian Canal cruises feature high on your holiday hotlist for next year but you’re wondering about the whats, wheres and hows of planning one, we’ve highlighted some of the big questions to give you an idea of where to start ─ and hopefully inspire you to book that unforgettable trip to this part of the Highlands.

the caledonian canal

What and where is the Caledonian Canal?

The Caledonian Canal is Scotland’s longest inland waterway, a 60-mile stretch of water in the Highlands that slices through the top of Scotland east to west (or vice versa). If you’re looking at a map, it’s that really straight blue line that stretches between Inverness and Fort William.

A third of the canal is man-made, created under the instruction of Thomas Telford in 1813 to provide a safe passage for ships and the Royal Navy. Now the waterway is mainly used for recreation, with plenty of hotels and holiday homes dotted along the banks.

If you were to sail the whole 200-year-old canal between Inverness and Fort William it would generally take three days, taking you through no fewer than 29 locks, four aqueducts, 10 bridges, and the Great Glen where four lochs – Dochfour, Ness, Oich, and Lochy – are found.

Where can I go on a Caledonian Canal cruise?

Countless things to do and see along both sides of the banks and beyond make cruising the Caledonian Canal a popular choice of trip, whether that’s on a luxury yacht or boutique ship like Lord of The Glens .

On a typical voyage, you’ll glide past spectacular scenery like tree-lined Laggan Avenue as you navigate the locks, or broody Ben Nevis, the highest mountain on the British Isles. Stretches of water meld into each other and you might glide around one or more lochs – like Loch Ness, where it’s hard not to keep a beady eye out for the eponymous mythical creature, and Loch Linnie where Castle Duart looms over its crag.

Other sights like the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which you might recognise from the Harry Potter films ; marine wildlife including Atlantic seals, minke whales, dolphins, porpoises and a variety of seabirds; Neptune’s staircase (eight locks); and the pretty houses, harbours, and silvery beaches of Inner Hebrides islands like Eigg, Mull and Mallaig are especially sensational viewed from the peaceful comfort of your outwards-facing cabin.

As with any decent cruise holiday , excursions offered make the most of local sights and attractions, with popular stop-offs including a visit to Culloden where Prince Charlie's Jacobite forces were defeated during a battle in 1746, a walk up to McCaig's Tower, a visit to the Clan Donald Centre on the Isle of Skye, a stop at Duart Castle for photographs, whisky-tasting at Oban, and a drink at Britain’s most remote pub in Inverie in Loch Nevis.

How can I cruise the Caledonian Canal?

One of the best voyages for exploring the Caledonian Canal is on a Lord of the Glens cruise. There are a couple of choices depending on length of trips, plus a voyage with TV weather presenter Carol Kirkwood.

Explore Scotland on Lord of the Glens with Carol Kirkwood

This seven-night journey starts at Inverness before hitting the Caledonian Canal. Here, passengers will be taken through Loch Ness to Fort Augustus, sailing past sights like the ruins of Urquhart Castle, before heading through beautiful tree-lined Laggan Avenue, the eight locks of Neptune's Staircase, past Ben Nevis, and up to Corpach.

Then it’s straight to the ocean, up to Oban. Here, gourmands can enjoy whisky-tasting and a chance to try fresh langoustines, oysters and scallops in what is referred to as the seafood capital of the Highlands. Other subsequent excursions include a trip to Tobermory and its colourful waterfront, a cruise past Eigg, Silver Sands beach and Mallaig, and a drink at the most remote pub in the British Isles, in Inverie. The journey ends with trips to the isles of Skye and Kyle, where excursions to the Clan Donald Centre and Eilean Donan Castle are offered, before transfers back to Inverness.

Departs May 27, 2024.

Robin McKelvie Reviews a Lord of the Highlands Cruise on the Caledonian Canal

Aug 3, 2023 | 0

Robin McKelvie Reviews a Lord of the Highlands Cruise on the Caledonian Canal

Lord of the Highlands Cruise

By Robin McKelvie

There is nothing quite like cruising Thomas Telford’s utterly unique Caledonian Canal . And there is nothing quite like cruising the island-studded wilds of the Hebrides.

The very good news is that anyone can now experience both world-class options on one single cruise aboard the 38-passenger Lord of the Highlands , a game-changing vessel from Hebridean Island Cruises , the people behind Scotland’s most luxurious ship, the Hebridean Princess .

a Lord of the Highlands cruise

It’s fair to say that the Lord of the Highlands has had its fair share of teething problems. COVID curtailed its start, before its maiden season was delayed last year when renovations on the 200-year-old Caledonian Canal overran.

Then came the final ignominy when the vessel’s bow thrusters proved insufficient for the tight, tricky confines of the Caledonian Canal and she was withdrawn early in her maiden season in 2022.

Day 1 — Aboard Lord of the Highlands

It is with some relief then that we set sail on my third attempt to sail with her. We leave from Inverness after a night alongside. That is another huge selling point for the Lord of the Highlands.

On every other small Scottish cruise ship I have been on ( including the Hebridean Princess ) , you spend many nights at anchor, needing a tender to shore, which can be bumpy and sometimes not even possible.

During this week-long Highland Waterways Discovery cruise aboard Lord of the Highlands , we are alongside every night and never take a tender once.

Day 2 — battlefields & mythic loch monsters on a lord of the highlands cruise.

Today brings the option of an excursion to the infamous battlefield of Culloden — there are tours every day to a range of historic or scenic attractions. As Scotland is draped in history and remarkable scenery, this is a true pleasure.

There is a qualified Scottish guide, Jean Blair, on board who really knows her stuff.

“I love sharing our rich heritage and our gorgeous part of the world with the passengers,” she beams as we steam across famous Loch Ness. “Our guests really enjoy Scotland’s colorful stories and leave blown away by our scenery.”

Loch Ness is a waterway on a massive scale by UK standards. If you take all the water in all the lakes in England and Wales together it still couldn’t fill the home of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, Nessie.

We don’t see the monster this time, but it’s a gorgeous fjord-like passage nonetheless that ends with us overnighting at the top of the lock flight at Fort Augustus .

The Caledonian Canal is an epic feat of engineering, bisecting Scotland between the North Sea and the Atlantic through a series of 28 locks and a quartet of lochs.

The Lord of the Highlands is not only the biggest vessel I’ve traversed the canal on, but it’s the largest one I’ve ever seen attempting it.

Day 3 — Cruising Among Highland Mountains

Day three is another canal day as we eke along under a natural panorama of hulking Highland mountains, enjoying the spring wildflowers and blossoming trees.

Life onboard is a leisurely affair, one of the three passenger decks (the Tweedsmuir Deck) is entirely given over to eating and drinking: a restaurant aft and a large lounge and bar fore.

They’ve done a brilliant job of converting a modern ferry into a classy cruiser that evokes the spirit of the Hebridean Princess without ever quite touching her heights.

She is new and also is priced at a lower level. The passenger crew to ratio is impressive too, with 38 passengers attended to by 18 crew.

Lord of the Highlands’ Crew

We have two different relief skippers on our voyage, with continuity supplied by the impressive Andy Allan. This Hotel Manager oversees everything and not just food and drink — approaching the Isle of Eigg he leaps ashore like a salmon on to the pier to take the ropes.

He is ably backed up by a young team of bright young — mainly British — crew.

Two stars are ever-smiling super-helpful Ashley and Alissa in the well-stocked bar. Scotch whiskies are an obvious highlight with some excellent drams.

You can match each area you visit with a whisky.

Dining on a Lord of the Highlands Cruise

The restaurant also remains solidly Scottish. We feast on the likes of Gigha halibut, Pentland lamb and Borders beef.

One lunch we savor a seafood buffet and the last of the two gala dinners sees the traditional dish of haggis piped in by a bagpiper with Andy performing the ‘Address to a Haggis.’

It’s fun, but not too formal — even on the gala nights it’s not black tie.

Day 4 — More Locks & Wild Critters

On day four we navigate the sea locks at Fort William and sail in the shadow of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, before heading south into the Hebrides.

Loch Linnhe ranks up the wildlife.

We spot a herd of wild red deer — the UK’s largest land mammal — and a trio of otters, a gaggle of seals and myriad seabirds.

This is not advertised as a wildlife cruise, but any sailing to the Hebrides always is.

There is time to enjoy a visit to the bustling ferry port of Oban, before our first island overnight on Mull.

Day 5 — Spotting Lots of Wildlife on Our Lord of the Highlands Cruise

I wake on day five to the sight of an otter making his way along the rugged shore.

Cutting west I spot a massive sea eagle on the sailing to the island capital of Tobermory.

It’s a gorgeous day for an afternoon and evening exploring this lovely village. I enjoy a dram at the Tobermory Distillery, seafood lunch out, nip into a few shops, and ramble to a lighthouse, with the Lord of the Highlands constantly there when I want to pop back aboard.

Day 6 — Tackling the Ardnamurchan Head Waters

On paper day six is our trickiest sea day tackling the notoriously tumultuous waters of Ardnamurchan Head .

However, it could scarcely be calmer, so calm we spot three separate minke whales in one day here in the Hebrides, a part of the world so inspiring Mendelson wrote a whole overture in its honor.

VIDEO: Below is a rendition of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture , which he composed in 1830 after a visit to Scotland.

You don’t need art or music to generate drama on our two ports of call today.

The Isle of Eigg arrives as a testament to the spirt of community. Many of the Scottish islands suffer under the weight of unsuitable or even uncaring owners. Eigg doesn’t: in 1997 the community was allowed to buy their own island and they have not looked back — growing the population and in 2008 becoming the first island in the world to generate all of their own electricity through green sources.

Passengers have the chance to put some money into that community at the impressive new island hub An Laimhrig with its twin shops and café.

Lord of the Highlands cruise calls on Eigg

It is then on to another community with a positive story and atmosphere. Knoydart is home to the British mainland’s most remote pub, the Old Forge, which last year the community managed to take ownership of after a long struggle.

Much of the rest of this deeply dramatic mountainous peninsula is community-owned too and visiting is a window into a world with lessons perhaps for us. It’s a place that certainly makes you think about how things can be done.

The Last Day 0f Our Lord of the Highlands Cruise

Our last day sees an early arrival into Kyle of Lochalsh. It removes any stressful variables as we’re tied up where we need to be nice and early.

This allows a morning excursion to the shortbread tin beauty of Eilean Donan Castle , which starred in the film Highlander and also in James Bond films .

Lunch on board is followed by a trip to Plockton, arguably the prettiest village in Scotland, a fittingly dramatic end to a cruise that has brought the best of both worlds on the Caledonian Canal and the isles of the Hebrides.

Trains run from both cities to Inverness ( www.scotrail.co.uk ).

Tips for Cruising on Lord of the Highlands

Take a copy of Hamish Haswell-Smith’s Scottish Islands. This sailor compiled the most comprehensive and useful guide to the isles before he died in 2020. It’s a fascinating read and the perfect cruising companion for the Hebrides.

Weather on a Lord of the Highlands Cruise

Scotland is this green with a reason as it can rain whenever you visit. The cruising season runs from spring through to autumn.

May and September are good choices as they tend to be drier and there is less chance of having to contend with the baleful midge, a harmless but annoying small insect ashore.

August is the warmest month, but can also be wet.

The beauty of green Scotland thrives on rain, so expect some. * Photo: Robin McKelvie

Money Matters

The British Pound is the official currency, with Scottish banks printing their own notes that are legal tender throughout the UK. Credit cards and cash widely accepted.

MS Hebridean Sky

The MS Hebridean Sky is one of our three flag ships and sister vessel to the MS Island Sky and MS Caledonian Sky. All three vessels were built in the same ship yard in Italy at similar times and share the same excellent attributes that make them three of the finest small ships in the world. Formerly known as the Sea Explorer, the vessel underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment in Sweden in Spring 2016 before being re-launched as the MS Hebridean Sky. We are delighted you have chosen the MS Hebridean Sky for your upcoming voyage. The 118-passenger, all-suite vessel is one of the finest small ships in the world and benefits from unusually spacious accommodation, public areas and outside decks. You will find the atmosphere on board akin to a private yacht or country hotel with a little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, talks from our onboard team and informative port briefings from your Cruise Director or Expedition Leader. After a day of exploration ashore, you will return to the comfort and peace of a well-run and exceedingly comfortable ship. Along with the Captain and officers and the Noble Caledonia team, our crew of 70 are dedicated to offering you the best possible experience during your time on board.

Immerse yourself into a world where history, nature, and scenery abound. The cruise route showcases the best of Scotland’s lochs (aka lakes) and landscapes, including the gorgeous Loch Ness – and maybe even a chance to spot the Monster!

Sightseeing on the aptly named Spirit of Scotland introduces memorable visits to iconic castles, royal gardens, and preserved battlefields, all of which speak to Scotland’s fascinating and sometimes tragic history. Mingle with the locals while shopping in small villages and taste Scotch whisky at on-shore distilleries.

Spirit of Scotland’s smartly appointed pub-style salon encourages informal socializing, while the dining room’s panoramic touring windows let in an abundance of natural light. Outside, there are separate public areas perfect for hours of and relaxation, including a spacious sundeck, a shaded dining terrace, and a hot tub. Comfortable cabins provide plenty of clever storage, and a seasoned crew adds to the warm hospitality.

Your onboard Chef offers a fresh and modern approach to Scottish cuisine, offering classic recipes and local ingredients, augmented by contemporary culinary methods. Decadent cheese platters featuring regional selections and a hand selected range of locally-produced whiskys round out the uniquely epicurean adventures aboard the Spirit of Scotland.

Unlike barging in other locations, it is not possible to bicycle or walk alongside the vessel as it cruises; however, once moored, active guests can disembark to explore port towns and the surrounding countryside by bicycle or on foot.

The Main Scotland’s Highlands & Islands Cruise begins in Inverness and transits the Caledonian Canal before sailing north along Scotland’s west coast to explore museums, isles, wildlife, and Scottish and Jacobite history. Disembarkation is in Kyle of Lochalsh with an overland transfer back to Inverness.

Scotland's Highlands and Islands cruise route map between Inverness & Kyle of Lochalsh.

Arrive in Inverness and transfer from the airport to Lord of the Glens. Embark the ship mid-afternoon and settle into your cabin. Gather for a reception, dinner and a performance by junior Scottish dancers on board.

Lord of the Glens

Visit Culloden, the infamous battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite forces were defeated in 1746. The visit includes both the battlefield and the award-winning visitor center, the National Trust for Scotland’s flagship site. See the standing stones and passage tombs of Clava Cairns, dating from the early Bronze Age. The impressive structures of this sacred site were developed for over a thousand years.

This afternoon, set sail on the Caledonian Canal, built between 1803 and 1822 to connect Loch Linnhe with the three other lochs that lie in the slip fault of the Great Glen. Enter Loch Ness, and learn about the legendary monster said to inhabit the loch. Ascend an impressive flight of locks that run through the heart of Fort Augustus to moor at the top of the village. The evening brings the opportunity for a hike.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Continue along the Caledonian Canal, ascending to 106 feet at Laggan Lock, after gliding along the tree-lined canal known as Laggan Avenue. Sail onward across picturesque Lochs Oich and Lochy before descending Neptune’s Staircase, a set of eight interconnected locks dropping 64 feet to the sea loch at Corpach. From Corpach, drive to Glenfinnan to explore the spectacularly scenic location now famous for Harry Potter, or chose to explore Loch Linnhe by kayak from the vessel’s moorings in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

Sail through Loch Linnhe to the town of Oban, set on a picturesque bay on the Firth of Lorn. There is time to explore this lively town on foot, visiting a whisky distillery and McCaig’s Folly, a monument on a hill overlooking the town and bay that was inspired by the Roman Colosseum. This evening, have a whisky tasting on board the ship.

Sail to the Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides. Drive across Mull, then cross to Iona by ferry to explore this picturesque island. Explore the island and its vital historic importance. Saint Columba arrived here in 563 with twelve followers, built a church, and began the process of converting the peoples of the area to Christianity. Iona became famous as a place of learning and as a pilgrimage site. Visit the medieval abbey ruins and the rebuilt abbey church. Stroll through St. Oran’s Chapel and the royal graveyard where Scottish kings, including Macbeth, are buried.

On Mull, visit Duart Castle. The ancestral home of Clan MacLean—an impressive fortress (with a dungeon!) with dramatic views over the Sound of Mull—was built in the 13th century, and is still lived in by the MacLean family. Re-joining the ship, sail the dramatic Sound of Mull for an overnight berth at the picturesque fishing community of Tobermory. This evening, meet with a member of the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust to learn about their efforts to protect marine mammals in these waters.

Sail north to either Eigg or Rum, depending on weather conditions. The islands have small populations of fewer than one hundred souls, but teem with wildlife. Look for marine animals and birdlife, including Atlantic seals, minke and humpback whales, dolphins, basking sharks and harbor porpoises, and one of the largest colonies of Manx shearwaters in northern Europe.

If the ship sails to Eigg, have the chance to walk or cycle around the island trails, enjoy views of the imposing crag of An Sgurr, and talk with the local residents. If the visit is to Rum, see the fanciful Kinloch Castle, completed in 1900 as the home of Sir George Bullough, who had purchased the island with money he had earned as a textile magnate. The castle is now managed by Scottish National Heritage. Later, sail to the tiny village of Inverie, where you can have a drink at the Old Forge, the most remote pub in the British Isles.

Continue north to the Isle of Skye. At the Museum of the Isles, trace the legacy of the 1,300-year-old Clan MacDonald, the Lords of the Isles, who once ruled the west coast of Scotland. See the ruins of Armadale Castle, ancestral home of the MacDonalds, and take a walk through the beautiful woodlands and gardens.

Then sail for Kyle of Lochalsh. Set out on a guided walk on the Balmacara Estate, affording spectacular coastal and mountain views. Alternatively, explore nearby Eilean Donan Castle, which sites on a tidal island at the confluence of three lochs, and is connected by causeway to the mainland. A Jacobite stronghold, it was destroyed by government forces in 1719 but restored in the early 20th century. Celebrate the voyage with a farewell dinner on board.

Disembark in Kyle of Lochalsh and drive through the highlands to Inverness. Then transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

Meals as indicated; coffee and tea with included meals; soft drinks such as sodas and fruit juices; beer, wine & full bar; tours as shown in the itinerary; services of the ship expedition leader and two expedition staff members aboard Lord of the Glens; local guides on all excursions; tips to local guides and bus drivers; porterage; arrival and departure transfers in Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh; basic WiFi (enhanced and premium packages available for purchase). Reverse Scotland’s Highlands & Islands Itinerary

The Reverse Scotland’s Highlands & Islands Cruise begins in Inverness with a transfer to Kyle of Lochalsh for embarkation. Sail southbound along Scotland’s west coast to explore museums, isles, wildlife, and Scottish and Jacobite history before transiting east through the Caledonian Canal and disembarking in Inverness.

Arrive at the Scottish Highlands City of Inverness and transfer to Kyle of Lochalsh to embark Lord of the Glens overlooking the Isle of Skye. Tonight, enjoy a reception and welcome dinner on board, followed by a concert of Scottish traditional music by local musicians.

This morning, explore Kyle of Lochalsh. Set out on a guided walk on the Balmacara Estate, affording spectacular coastal and mountain views. Alternatively, explore nearby Eilean Donan Castle, which sites on a tidal island at the confluence of three lochs, and is connected by a causeway to the mainland. A Jacobite stronghold, it was destroyed by government forces in 1719 but restored in the early 20th century. Return to the ship for lunch while sailing over the sea to the Isle of Skye.

This afternoon, visit the Museum of the Isles, tracing the legacy of the 1,300-year-old Clan MacDonald, the Lords of the Isles who once ruled the west coast of Scotland. See the ruins of Armadale Castle, the ancestral home of the MacDonalds, and take a walk through the beautiful woodlands and gardens. Then sail to the tiny village of Inverie and stop at the Old Forge, the most remote pub in the British Isles, where you can chat with Inverie’s residents over a pint of local ale.

This morning, sail south to the Small Isles to land on Eigg or Rum, depending on weather conditions. The islands have small populations of fewer than one hundred souls, but they teem with wildlife. Look for marine animals and birdlife, including Atlantic seals, minke and humpback whales, dolphins, basking sharks and harbor porpoises, and one of the largest colonies of Manx shearwaters in northern Europe.

If the ship sails to Eigg, enjoy the chance to walk or cycle around the island trails, enjoy views of the imposing crag of An Sgurr, and talk with the local residents. If today’s stop is in Rum, then visit fanciful Kinloch Castle, completed in 1900 as the home of Sir George Bullough, who had purchased the island with money earned as a textile magnate. The castle is now managed by Scottish National Heritage.

Continue aboard Lord of the Glens to the picturesque town of Tobermory. The colorful village was established in 1788 and is famous for the brightly painted houses that line its waterfront, located at the bottom of a cliff face. In the afternoon, explore the town and visit its small whisky distillery. This evening, plan to meet with a member of the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust to learn about their efforts to protect marine mammals in these waters.

This morning, sail along the coast of Mull to Craignure, then drive to the ferry that leads to Iona. Explore this picturesque island, which is of vital historic importance. Oran’s Chapel and the royal graveyard, where generations of Scottish kings (including Macbeth), the Lords of the Isles, and High Kings of Norway were buried. Enjoy a home-cooked lunch in the Saint Columba Hotel.

On the way back to Craignure, visit Duart Castle. The ancestral home of Clan MacLean—an impressive fortress with a dungeon and dramatic views over the Sound of Mull—was built in the 13th century and is still lived in by the MacLean family. Then, sail across the Sound of Mull to the bustling town of Oban, set on a picturesque bay on the Firth of Lorn, and stay for the evening. Those who wish may walk all the way up to McCaig’s Folly, a monument on a hill overlooking the town and bay that was inspired by the Roman Colosseum. This evening, have a whisky tasting on board.

This morning, sail to Corpach and enter the Caledonian Canal, built between 1803 and 1822 to connect Loch Linnhe with the three other lochs that lie in the slip fault of the Great Glen. Kayak from the Corpach moorings in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. Or choose to drive to beautiful Glenfinnan, along Loch Sheil and surrounded by mountains, where Bonnie Prince Charlie first raised the Jacobite standard on mainland Britain in 1745. Explore the spectacularly scenic location, home to the Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct on the West Highland Railway line, made famous in the Harry Potter movies. Moor at Corpach for the night.

From Corpach, ascend Neptune’s Staircase, a set of eight interconnected locks rising 64 feet from the sea lock at Corpach. Sail into Loch Lochy, glide along the tree-lined canal known as Laggan Avenue, sail across picturesque Lochs Lochy and Oich, and descend an impressive flight of locks that run through the heart of Fort Augustus. Seeing the process of getting the ship through the locks is always exciting, and Lord of the Glens is purpose-built to fit in the locks’ narrow confines. The ship is always an object of curiosity among local residents and other visitors as she transits. This evening, moor at Fort Augustus, with a chance to take an exploratory hike through the surrounding countryside.

Enter Loch Ness, cruise past the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle, a Norman castle on an Iron Age site, and learn about the legendary Loch Ness Monster, which is said to inhabit the loch in this vicinity. Continue through Loch Dochfour to Inverness.

This afternoon, visit Culloden, the infamous battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite forces were defeated on April 16, 1746. Visit both the battlefield and the award-winning visitor center, the National Trust for Scotland’s flagship site. Continue to the evocative burial chambers and standing stones of Clava Cairns, dating from the early Bronze Age. The impressive structures of this sacred site were developed for over a thousand years.

Tonight, enjoy a reception and dinner on board, with a special after-dinner performance in the lounge by a local troupe of junior Scottish dancers.

Disembark in Inverness this morning after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight home.

PLEASE NOTE THIS CRUISE CAN DEPART FROM EITHER OBAN OR INVERNESS. PLEASE REFER TO THE CRUISE CALENDAR

british caledonian cruises

Spirit of Fortitude is one of the largest vessels to be able to transit the Caledonian Canal, watch in awe as she squeezes through the engineering marvel that is this Thomas Telford canal in this interesting and unique six night cruise, with two options – either routing North from Oban to Inverness or routing South from Inverness to Oban. This voyage encompasses scenes of murders, monsters, castles, lochs and some of the most stunning landscapes you could ever wish to see.

On the North bound route starting from Oban, this journey encompasses the beautiful sea loch of Loch Linnhe, takes in Loch Leven at the foot of Glencoe, and then leads into Loch Ness through the Great Glen after entering the canal at Corpach. Following the sixty miles of the Caledonian Canal with its perfectly engineered locks, there is something for everyone on this cruise from exploration activities, with cycling & canoeing or a cable car up the side of Aonach Mor to para gliding, to visits to ancient monuments and numerous sites of historical interest, gardens and castles, or sitting back soaking up the wildlife and stunning scenery created by the Great Glen Fault that runs through Loch Linnhe and the Firth of Lorne and the great glen to Inverness. Keep an eye out for that rare glimpse of the Loch Ness Monster on Loch Ness!

Passing places, anchorages and ports

Our gateway to the highlands and islands ……. Historically a fishing and trading village until the Victorian steamers started arriving in larger numbers to this pretty village, Oban grew into a town as it became a main stopping off point for the Western Isles.

Set in a natural bay it is largely protected from wilder weather and has some beautiful seaside shops to visit. At the top of the hill behind the bay sits McCaig’s Tower or the Folly as it is better known. Built in 1902, McCaig built the colosseum style structure as a lasting testament to his family and also to provide work for the local tradesmen. Despite it being a steep walk to the top, the views are spectacular. Oban also boasts a cathedral, castle and a golf course and has a rich culture in traditional Scottish music and this is evident with its many festivals. Here fresh seafood is a must, it is literally from sea to plate and is served up beautifully by our on-board chef.

At the entrance to the Sound of Mull sits Eilean Musdale and the lighthouse that bears her name. Built in 1833 by Robert Stevenson – the grandfather of the acclaimed writer Robert Louis Stevenson , the lighthouse replaced a tall standing stone that had sat there for centuries.

Just southwest is Lady’s Rock, where Lachlan Maclean left his wife to die in 1527. Having decided to murder her, he rowed the unfortunate Lady Catherine out to the island to leave her to die. The very morning after, he looked out from his home at Duart Castle and seeing no sign of life and assuming that she was dead – he sent a message to his deceased wife’s brother the Earl of Argyll at Inveraray Castle – saying he was bringing her home to be buried. Upon arrival he was met by not just the Earl, but Lady Catherine as well after she had been picked up by a passing boat in the night. Poor old Lachlan had to endure a meal in the dining hall before fleeing in the night whilst all those concerned made no mention of the situation!

A mere 12 miles long, Lismore is home to around 160 people and Gaelic is often heard as you wander throughout the island. The name Lismore derives from the Gaelic lios- mór meaning Great Garden aptly named for its abundant wildflowers that serve to dress the habitat of its many native birds. Over 300 different types of plant are known to grow on the island making this one of the most interesting isles for those botanists among us. For the bird lovers -buzzards, herons and skylarks are frequently seen in the skies and grassland around.

The island is also home to many archaeological sites including Iron Age duns and Bronze Age cairns. The Pictish broch’s at Balnagown Croft are said to be some of the best preserved in the country and Neolithic artefacts dating from 3500BC have also been found. More recent ruins can be found at Castle Coeffin – a ruined 13 th century hall house which is said to be haunted by a Viking princess and there are also the remains of Archadun Castle. This little Isle punches above its weight.

Loch Linnhe

Although just one loch, upstream of the Corran it is traditionally known as the black pool and below the salty pool. The only sea loch along the Great Glen Fault it is the place where many of the other lochs feed into it along its 31-mile stretch. The Great Glen Fault cuts through Scotland from the west to north east all the way past Shetland and beyond/ Loch Linnhe is home to the iconic Castle Stalker as well as Seal Island.

Everywhere you look, the loch offers a picture postcard view. Watch out particularly for photo opportunities for dolphins and golden eagles as they soar upwards towards Ben Nevis in the distance.

Castle Stalker

Literally translated as ‘Castle of the Hunter’, Castle Stalker sits on a small rocky island called the Rock of the Cormorants which is also the battle cry of the Stewart clan of Appin. With a turbulent history of murders through the ages, illegitimacy, and lost ownership through drunken gambling and garrisoning troops during the 1745 Jacobite Rising, this iconic castle is one of the most photographed locations in Scotland.

Le chteau du Loch Ness en Ecosse

Shuna Island

One of the Slate Islands, Shuna is simply bustling with wildlife. This island supports red, fallow and roe deer as well as otters, seals and dolphins and many more, all thanks to its tranquil and isolated location. Exceptionally for the local islands, Shuna is quite forested, which gives home to many birds including the Nightjar – an elusive and nocturnal bird. Make sure to listen out for the male’s charring song, rising and falling in the night air.

The shores of Shuna are a mix of rocky slopes and small beaches in sheltered bays and dotted around are the burial mounds that are all that remains of the islands Stone Age inhabitants. Shuna Castle is a splendid no expense spared romantic piece of architecture built in 1911 by adventurer and philanthropist George Alexander MacLean Buckley, though very sadly, it was abandoned in the 1980’s.

Loch Leven, the burial place of the clan MacDonald of Glencoe. It is truly magnificent and has nine small islands creating a colourful mix of heather and grass and the attractive village of Glencoe which comfortably lies on its southern shore. Eilean Munde – where the MacDonald clan rests is just opposite the village. The distinctive Ballachulish Bridge crosses the narrows of Caolas Mhic Phàdraig, which have a fast tidal stream that can run up to seven knots. Most Scottish cottages have used the slate from Ballachulish.

Glencoe I think conjures up everything we think of as Scottish. This narrow glen is home to some of the most majestic and breath-taking mountain scenery in the world. Each twist brings another gasp of amazement and a vista that is hard to forget.

Historically, Glencoe is best known for the massacre of the MacDonald clan. On the 27th August 1691 King William offered all opposing Highland clans a pardon for their part in the Jacobite rising – if they agreed to pledge allegiance to him before a magistrate by New Year’s Day. Having set out in good time, Alasdair MacIain, the Clan Chief of Glencoe, arrived at Fort William on 31 December to take the oath only to be told that he would now have to travel some 70 miles to the sheriff at Inveraray. After setting out on his long journey during these winter months MacIain finally took the oath on 6 January 1692. He was given assurances that his allegiance would be accepted and that he and his people – the McDonalds of Glencoe – would be safe.

Meanwhile, John Dalrymple, Master of Stair and the Secretary of State was hoping for an excuse to make an example of one of the Highland Clans. When he heard that Alasdair MacIain had not sworn allegiance by the designated date he was delighted: “My Lord Argyle tells me that Glencoe has not taken the oath, at which I rejoice. It is a great work of charity to be exact in the rooting out of that damnable sect, the worst in all the Highlands”.

So on 2 February 120 troops arrived at Glencoe under the command of Captain Robert Campbell of Glen Lyon who was himself related in marriage to the Clansman. They were given hospitality by the MacDonald’s of Glencoe as was customary in the Highlands. For the next ten days and nights the troops were given food, drink and lodgings.

On 12 February Glen Lyon received written orders from his superior, Major Duncanson: “You are hereby ordered to fall upon the rebels, the McDonalds of Glencoe, and put all to the sword under seventy. You are to have a special care that the old Fox and his sons do upon no account escape your hands, you are to secure all the avenues that no man escape”. At 5am on the morning of 13 February 1692 the killing began. Alasdair MacIain of Glencoe was shot dead, his wife was dragged away from her fallen husband and stripped naked and died the next day. Houses were set alight. Captives were bound hand and foot before being slaughtered and many of the clan ran from their homes and fled into the mountains. In total, thirty-eight men, women and children were killed in the massacre. Many more died of exposure as they tried to escape across the mountains in the dead of winter. The visitor centre in Glencoe tells all about this bloody history and after learning the stories, the spectacular mountains and glens will seem to echo with distant cries for mercy.

Corpach town and bay has always played a part in battles and in 1470 the Battle of Corpach saw Clan Cameron rout Clan MacLean. In WWI, the US Navy held a base here and WWII saw it as the engineering base for HMS St Christopher. Military buildings that still exist and are of particular note include the main torpedo stores (which still have some of the original internal fittings present) and a long Nissan hut which housed a small target shooting range, today is still a target range. For more tranquil thoughts, it is the perfect location to sit on the beach and view the spectacular Ben Nevis in the distance reflected like crystal in the waters ahead.

Fort William

Nestling in the shadow of Ben Nevis – Scotland’s highest mountain, Fort William is the site of the two famous Battles of Inverlochy in 1431 and 1645. Today, you can visit the battlefield and stand under the unforgiving terrain of Ben Nevis and hear the distant echoes of the Clan war cries in the air. The highest Mountain in the British Isles and standing at 1,346 metres, Ben Nevis has around 100,000 ascents every year. Many flock to it in order to come down by bike, walk, run and even ski. The entire town is surrounded by picturesque mountains and is often the location of movie sets – most notably Braveheart, Highlander, the Harry Potter series and some of the scenes from Monarch of the Glen.

Caledonian Canal

Conceived in 1773 the Caledonian Canal took nearly 50 years to build and was completed in 1822 after being designed by the famous Scottish engineer Thomas Telford. With its distinctive “Neptune’s Steps”, the canal connects Inverness on the east coast with Fort William on the west coast across 60 miles of stunning scenery including the Great Glen and Loch Ness – it is considered one of the greatest waterways in the world with 29 locks, 4 aqueducts and 10 bridges, an absolute feat of human engineering. This is amazing to see and even more amazing to be on and experience with so much to see and explore in and around the canal. Little children look on in the hope that they can one day be part of the canal. As a child myself, I used to look on as yachts and cruises made their journeys and would wish with my friends to become a part of the canals story. You will not forget this experience.

Neptunes Staircase

Despite its deceptively simple engineering, you cannot help but be utterly impressed by this design, as you traverse this ladder of eight locks. Conceived and built in the early 1800’s by Thomas Telford, the locks enable vessels to climb to a height of 70 feet above sea level over a distance of just 500 yards. Imagine that in those days! It takes around 90 minutes to travel and if watching the mechanics of this journey does not inspire you, then the impressive views of the dark side of Ben Nevis should captivate you throughout the ascent. Many will aspire to repeat this trip one day.

british caledonian cruises

This is my single best part of any of the canals that I have travelled on throughout the world.

Part of the Great Glen, this narrow lock was where the Battle of the Shirts was fought in 1544 and also where the stand-off at the Fords if Arkaig ended a 360-year long feud between Clan Donald and Clan Fraser in 1665 – we Scots have long memories!

Along the serene banks of the loch and sheltered by tall trees, look out for the River Horse – a faerie being also known as the Lord of the Lake or the Water King who was known to overturn boats.

Laggan Lochs

Laggan locks, two locks connecting the Laggan Avenue, a midway point on the Caledonian Canal between Loch Lochy and Loch Oich a splendid part of the canal which enjoys tall trees.

british caledonian cruises

Thomas Telford artificially raised the level of the loch by many feet to ensure that the loch could become part of Caledonian Canal. This loch is rich with a wide variety of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Each autumn the Atlantic salmon migrates from the sea using Loch Oich, Loch Lochy and Loch Ness as their spawning nests.

Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus, resting halfway along the Caledonian Canal, offers spectacular views along Loch Ness. Full of things to see and do with the canal running through it, there is always plenty to take the eye here. A favourite place to visit is the monumental Benedictine Abbey which was built in 1876.

This quaint town is also home to the Clansmen Centre, where costumed guards demonstrate 17th century clan weaponry. You can take a tour around the village and spot the many interpretations of Nessie in the sculptures dotted throughout the paths. Originally named after St Cummein, the town was renamed after the defeat of the Jacobite uprising in 1715.

Deeper than the North Sea, said never to freeze and containing more fresh water than all the lakes combined in England and Wales, Loch Ness is believed to be the home of “Nessie” The Scottish Loch Ness monster and Scotland’s greatest legend.

Since the 6th Century this elusive monster is said to have lurked in the waters depths. One of St Columba’s monks was startled whilst swimming as the monster appeared and rushed at him, roaring in a most frightening way! Columba, strong in his faith that God would protect the man, cried out to the monster,” Go no further, nor touch the man! Go back!” Surprisingly the monster is said to have fled and the legend was born! Since then sightings have been few and far between, but every year visitors take to the water to try and entice the camera shy Nessie to the surface.

Should you prefer to see less shy wildlife, then golden eagles soar around the loch as do merlin and kites, whilst at the lochs edge, seals bask in the sunshine and frolic at the rocky shores. The rich feeding grounds of the loch enable the bottlenose dolphins to grow to incredible sizes here. Near Fort Augustus, an Iron Age crannog or small island seems to float on the surface of the loch with majestic trees reflecting in the still waters. Urquhart Castle sits perched on a hill at the side of the Loch and is quite spectacular!

Urquhart Castle

This castle sits on the most prominent spot on the banks of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle despite its ruinous state remains an impressive stronghold. Very popular with tourists for its Visitor Centre and location, the battlements are like stepping back in history as echoes of the castle’s past wash over you as you look up and down the stunning views of the world’s most famous loch. Here we will drop anchor in the shadow of the castle.

british caledonian cruises

Drumnadrochit

Lying at the head of Urquhart Bay on the northern shore of Loch Ness, the village of Drumnadrochit is quite a sweet, charming, yet very busy little village famed as the home of the Loch Ness Monster.

Here you will find the very popular Loch Ness Centre whose five-star exhibition is even endorsed by Scottish Natural Heritage as a ‘portal to the unique phenomenon that is Loch Ness’ delivering some unexpected light upon the mystery itself.

Inverness, capital to the highlands with the River Ness and its attractive bridges, Eden Court theatre and the Inverness Castle sitting proudly on its banks. It is a bustling city with plenty of shopping. The museum is incredible, as is the art gallery which is not too far from Inverness Castle. Inverness is home to plenty of exceptional dining establishments and also has its own airport meaning that your departure from the boat can be easily arranged.

british caledonian cruises

What a wonderful cruise we had on the Spirit of Fortitude. It was an absolute luxury and the staff were very attentive and worked very well together. We very much loved the trip and hope to be back soon!

british caledonian cruises

What a vessel! we never expected there to be so much room and the size! we thought for sure it would never fit. The passing tourists really do flock to the boat as she is really quite a talking point. It was such a relaxing trip cutting though the highlands of Scotland slow and steady but the crew worked tremendously well with the boat and yet still found time to make our journey even more pleasurable. The Castle was so interesting and yet no sighting on the loch for us! Captain Keith is first class and really knows his way through the various locks. Complements to the Chef the food was divine and we came away with wonderful ideas on table settings as well as Scottish cuisine. The on board entertainment with Ian was an added bonus, such talented crew.

Spirit of Fortitude does command a presence but no more so than when she enters the canal. The crew did say, but i have never seen so many people photograph a small ship so much, she really is pretty iconic. The fact a Scottish couple owns and operates such a vessel in Scotland and you have not chosen to head off to the Med is a credit to you both. I had a great time, made many new friends as well as memories.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO British-Isles Cruises Insider

Because of its island climate, the British Isles don't get quite as warm in the summer or quite as cold in the winter as elsewhere in Europe. People love to visit in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the weather is usually warm and dry.

Of course, British weather is known to be temperamental, and rain is frequent. Pack layers even if you're visiting in summer, as the evenings can get cool, and bring a waterproof jacket and outerwear regardless of the season.

Tipping is not customary across the British Isles like it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America. Some restaurants do add a service charge to bills.

If driving in the British Isles, remember Ireland road signs are in kilometers, while Great Britain uses miles instead.

FOR FOODIE'S A CUISINE OF COMFORT

Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.

Traditional Irish Stew for St. Patricks day

Stir the Pot

Made from slow-cooked meat — typically lamb or beef — and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.

Cote de Boeuf with Yorkshire Pudding

The Proof's in the Pudding

Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.

British Fish and Chips

The O.G. Fish and Chips

Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and "mushy" peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.
