Downtown Aquarium – Houston

Take a guided or self-guided excursion through the Downtown Aquarium in Houston. An attraction and group-friendly restaurant, Downtown Aquarium features touch pools, shark tanks, games, rides, and interactive exhibits. Groups can go behind-the-scenes to see how exhibits are maintained and learn about aquarium careers. Groups will also have the chance to see the Interactive Diver Show, which allows groups to talk to a diver as he or she is swimming with sea life in a 25,000-gallon exhibit. Downtown Aquarium in Houston: The Complete Guide

Teeming with hundreds of creatures and plants from the deep blue sea, the Houston Downtown Aquarium is a marvel. Tour exciting exhibits, go on thrilling aquatic-themed rides, eat at an undersea restaurant, and more at one of Houston’s most popular tourist attractions. The Downtown Aquarium was borne out of a redevelopment project including Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks Building. The result is a 6-acre complex with a 500,000-gallon aquarium housing 300 different species of fish and sea life, a restaurant and bar, eight interactive exhibits, and a collection of six amusement park rides including a Ferris wheel and a train ride through the shark tank.

Downtown Aquarium Highlights

The Houston Downtown Aquarium has eight exciting exhibits, each of which has its own special theme. Some standouts include:

• The Rainforest offers a look at the world’s tropical rainforests and life inside their rivers; there are red-bellied piranhas, freshwater stingrays, colorful rainforest frogs, and even an emerald tree boa.
• Step inside the Shipwreck, a sunken hull of a 17th-century Spanish galleon, and explore diverse oceanic life ranging from living coral reefs to moray eels to a giant Pacific octopus.
• The Sunken Temple features lionfish, pufferfish, tarantulas, an electric eel, and a Tiger Reticulated Python that’s well over 20 feet long.
• Younger kiddos especially will love checking out the Discovery Zone, a hands-on encounter area with snakes, bearded dragons, and more. 

Games and Rides

You’ll likely want to reserve a full afternoon for the outdoor Games and Rides area, which features fun carnival-style games and amusement rides for all ages. Rides include the Diving Bell Ferris Wheel, an aquatic-themed carousel, and the Shark Voyage, a train that takes you through the center of a 200,000-gallon shark tank. 

Events, Special Programming, and Guided Tours

Before you go, be sure to check the (always packed) events calendar for a full list of the aquarium’s special programming each month, to plan your visit accordingly. There’s always something fun going on—for instance, every Friday night during the summer is Latin Beats Night, when visitors can enjoy live music and salsa lessons from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Saturday nights, live bands perform from the Downtown Aquarium stage for Aquarium Live. The aquarium also hosts summer camps, educational classes, and career programs for teens, among other events.

Tips for Families With Children

The aquarium is the perfect place to take children, of course. Before you go, check out the following tips and information:

• Plan to spend at least an hour exploring the first floor, which is the Aquarium Adventure and Stingray Floor. There are huge floor-to-ceiling viewing tanks, which allow kids to get up-close-and-personal with all the exciting marine life.
• The Games and Rides area of the aquarium (which is all outdoors) is essentially a mini-amusement park (with an array of age-appropriate attractions, as well as concessions), so you’ll want to reserve plenty of time for this as well. 
• Children under the age of 2 are granted free admission to everything, including the Games and Rides area.
• Note that strollers are welcome but there is no designated stroller parking outside of the stingray reef on the first floor.
• Weekdays are the least crowded time to visit, especially if you go during the morning.  

How to Get There

If you’re coming from North Houston, take I-35 South and exit McKinney; turn left on Bagby. If you’re coming from North Houston, take I-10 East to Smith exit and turn right on Franklin, then turn left on Bagby. And from South Houston, take Highway 288 to I-45 North, then exit Houston Ave/Memorial Drive. Make a right at Memorial; go to Bagby and make a left at the light. The Downtown Aquarium will be on your left. 

Note: Most downtown Houston hotels provide shuttle service to and from the aquarium.

Parking Information

Self-parking and valet are both options at the Houston Aquarium. Self-parking is $8; valet is $10. The parking lot is open from 9:30 a.m. until midnight, and vehicles may not be left overnight. Do keep in mind that the lot only takes cash.  

Tips for Visitors

• The aquarium maintains a strict food and beverage policy; hard and soft coolers, bottled water, glass containers, and food are not allowed in the amusement area. Also, you can’t leave with alcohol that was served on the premises.
• There are several items that are prohibited, including lawn chairs or folding chairs, bikes, skateboards, etc.; for the full list, see the aquarium's website . 
• For those who will be touring multiple Houston attractions, it may be worth it to get a CityPASS , which includes prepaid admission to five of the biggest attractions; apart from the Downtown Aquarium, you’ll gain access to the Space Center, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and your choice of either the Houston Zoo or the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and your choice of either the Kemah Boardwalk All-Day Ride Pass or the Children’s Museum of Houston.

History Of Downtown Aquarium

The City of Houston released a request for bids for the renovation of Fire Station No. 1 in the 400 block of Bagby and the nearby Central Waterworks facility in 1999. In mid-2000, Landry’s plan was accepted over an alternate proposal by the Post/Cordish partnership. The Central Waterworks facility would serve as a habitat for shark and ray exhibits. The historic firehouse would still be intact while development going on around it, and the second floor would contain the main restaurant.

Downtown Aquarium first opened its doors in 2003.

Animal rights activists launched a campaign against the aquarium’s white tiger display in late 2015. In response to criticism of the exhibit, the Downtown Aquarium insisted that their “tigers get exceptional animal care” and that “our tiger exhibit has been accredited by AZA, and every year by the USDA.” However, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has vowed to file a lawsuit if the aquarium does not close the exhibit and relocate the tigers to a sanctuary.

20 Top Activities to Do In Houston Downtown Aquarium  

1. shipwreck.

Visit the Shipwreck to explore the buried hull of a Spanish galleon from the 17th century and take in the stunning variety of marine life it has to offer. In the shipwreck room, there are five wall tanks which is a replicas of the hull of an old wooden ship. The first is a rocky habitat for giant pacific octopuses. For sea anemones and sea stars, there is a smaller tank, and for black margate, black bar soldierfish, and sabre squirrelfish, there is a larger tank.

A fine long coral reef tank that is even bigger has a live leather finger, leather cup, and staghorn corals among other varieties. Clownfish, flame hawkfish, pajima cardinal fish, goby, pink skunk clownfish, yellow eye tang, yellow tang, anthias, bangaii cardinal fish, blue streak basslet, six line wrasse, and blue tang are some of the fish present. This excellent collection is completed by the enormous clam, bulb-tip anemone, brittle star, coral-banded shrimp, hermit crab, and turbo snail. The largest tank is in the picturesque bow of the ship and has four different types of grouper (Queensland, goliath, red, and black), as well as green moray eels and neon goby.

2. Louisiana Swamp

This is a large, dark space with a roof made of branches and leaves, and to one side is a run-down cabin. The Wishing Pond, a tiny coin throw in a pond created by cypress knees, is located in the center. The biggest display consists of a long open-top tank with a rocky back ledge where little American alligators and turtles can be found. The alligator snapping turtle’s habitat is next to a smaller, comparable setup.

Two little wall displays, one for red swamp crayfish and the other for American bullfrogs are set into an exposed riverbank. In a box exhibit close to the cabin, there is another modest display for two kinds of tree frogs. The fish of the swamp, including spotted gar, black crappie, largemouth bass, blue catfish, bowfin, carp, and sunfish, are also housed in a lovely open-top tank.

3. Rainforest

Explore the tropical rainforests of the world and the wildlife that resides in their waterways. The Rainforest is a tiny, densely covered corridor with few displays. There are four wall tanks for archerfish, piranhas, South American rainforest fish (with a smaller selection of yellow belly cichlid, earth-eater, algae-eater, and Jack Dempsey), and a bigger assortment of rainforest fish (Niger catfish, redtail catfish, tiger shovelnose, peacock bass, and silver arowana).

Additionally, there is a tiny shelf tank for polka-dot stingrays at Downtown Aquarium Houston. There are also a few displays for non-fish species here, including a wall terrarium for a blue poison dart frog, a terrarium for an emerald tree boa, a terrarium for a prehensile tailed skink, and a small hardware enclosure for a bird perch that alternates between four parrot species.

4. Sunken Temple

Sunken Temple is a multi-chambered theme area that expertly portrays ancient cultures of Central and South America. It begins with the longest tank first, a long one with an upward curving panel forming a half-tunnel. The vibrant inhabitants contrast nicely with the intimate, temple-like interior. The occupants of this area include a nice variety of porkfish, emperor snapper, panther grouper, eyestripe surgeonfish, blue tang, unicorn tang, sailfin tang, clown trigger, creole fish, naso tang, golden puffer, French grunt, and Kemps Ridley sea turtles.

An aquarium for lionfish and foxface is located nearby in a small, semi-circular wall niche. The same area houses five additional little exhibits, including small tanks for Caribbean seahorses and axolotls as well as terrariums for spiny-tailed lizards, tarantulas, and milksnakes.

5. Tigers of the Maharaja’s Temple

A full-time team with over 40 years of zoo and aquarium expertise works in the Downtown Aquarium Tiger display, which is certified by Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Zoological Association of America (ZAA).

The staff members keep a close eye on the cats throughout the year. Four white Bengal tigers are rotated into this display, which is housed in a space that resembles a temple and is divided from viewers by floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The tiger habitat is made up of simulated brilliant stone walls and flooring, a raised formal stone swimming pool, a statue that resembles Buddha, and a tiny stone waterfall that cascades down in the back of the room.

6. Stingray Reef

Visit Stingray Reef to feel the thrill of being able to pet and feed live stingrays. Many people have the idea that stingrays are violent and will deliberately attempt to sting humans. They resemble miniature water puppies in that they are calm, hungry, and cute. You can feel the oddly textured skin of the stingrays in this touch tank, and observe their endearing behavior.

They provide a unique hands-on experience with their touch tanks that you won’t soon forget!

7. Shark Voyage

An open-air station for the Shark Cruise train ride serves as the focal point of the outdoor amusement area. The journey takes around 15 minutes and departs from the station beneath the nearby motorway overpasses. The aquarium site spans many acres at this location, with its shaded parking lot taking up the majority of the space. The train passes a beach scene with a sizable simulated shark that is caught and is hanging from a scaffold by its tail. The railway enters an older brick former industrial building after passing over the overpass, which has been renovated to house the Shark Journey. A vast, dark acrylic tunnel display with 200,000 gallons of water features rocky outcrops and a variety of enormous shark species, including the zebra, whitetip reef, blacktip reef, and great white.

Here you have the opportunity to see many different species of huge sharks, including zebra, whitetip, blacktip, sand tiger, and sawfish. Thankfully, the train stops in the tunnel for about four minutes, allowing passengers to enjoy views of some of the swimming sharks via the windows in the train carriages’ canopies.

Note : You must pay for the train separately since it is not included with entrance to the main display.

8. Gulf of Mexico

This is the sole exhibit with the biggest tank along the display path (but not in the facility). It is a little tank compared to other major modern tanks. It is a lovely display that is dominated by simulated oil platform supports, the real version of which the aquarium defends as being advantageous to the environment because it has helped to expand the range of many fish and supported aquaculture research and recreational fishing activities. There are numerous enormous fish in this tank, including red snapper, cobia, black drum, tarpon, sheepshead, amberjack, horse-eye jack, and redfish.

9. Diving Bell Ferris Wheel

Go 100 feet in the air for breathtaking views of Houston’s downtown cityscape.

Minimum Height: Under 42 “must have an adult companion.

10. Aquatic Carousel Ride

Have you ever experienced riding an alligator or a dolphin’s back? Take a ride on this aquatic-themed carousel at the Downtown Aquarium Houston.

11. Frog Hopper Ride

Go on this crazy-fun attraction that bounces repeatedly from a height of 22 feet and plunge into adventure.

To ride, a person must be 36″ tall.

12. Aqua Wheel Ride

Take a spin on the Aqua Wheel! This miniature Ferris wheel lets kids see the world from above. Under 42″ tall guests must be accompanied by an adult.

13. Lighthouse Dive

Calling all adventurers! Dare to plunge 65 feet in the air while admiring the city skyline!

 14. Discovery Zone

Enter Exploration Zone to encounter electric eels, seahorses, and a brilliant variety of vibrant species up close. You can further explore coral reefs, arctic seas, and the wonders of the deep ocean on interactive monitors. During the daily Animal Encounters, you might even get a close-up encounter with one of their Ambassador Animals!

15. Cool off at the splash pad

One of the aquarium’s best-kept secrets is that one of the most enjoyable activities is completely free. There is a splash area on the aquarium’s property that you can use without paying admission. On a hot day, cool yourself in the water and then use the public restrooms to change into dry clothing before leaving.

Every route leads to the gift shop . You can find wonderful gifts and keepsakes among the aquatic-themed merchandise, whether you’re shopping for clothing, home decor, or stuffed animals.

19. Participate in educational programs

Children get the chance to learn more about the undersea world through camps, day programs, and overnight programs at Houston Downtown Aquarium. Children (ages 6–12) can, for instance, go behind the scenes, and have up-close interactions with exotic animals as part of the Marine Scientist for a Day program before dissecting a squid. A guided tour, a biologist diving presentation, a squid dissection, and animal feeding are all included in the program.

Aside from Working on the Wild Side, which takes teenagers behind the scenes to learn about animal care, conservation, and the aquarium business, other entertaining educational programs include Animal Meet and Greets, Zoologist for a Day, Wild Dreams Overnight (basically a sleepover), a weekly Sea Safari summer camp , and Animal Meet and Greets.

Each opportunity has a different price, and you have to make your reservations in advance. The aquarium also provides school and scout programs, like field excursions.

Every table has a front-row view of the dining room’s 150,000-gallon aquarium, which is home to over 100 different species of aquatic life. Downtown Aquarium – Houston , is a unique and exciting destination for visitors of all ages. Created by repurposing two historic landmarks, Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks Building, into a six-acre entertainment and dining complex, this 500,000-gallon water wonderland features more than 300 species of aquatic life from around the world.

Experience exhibits showcasing different aquatic and geographic regions, dine at the full-service restaurant, enjoy a drink at the upscale bar, explore the shopping area, and have fun with rides and games. The aquarium also has a fully-equipped ballroom that can host events. With so much to see and do, the Houston aquarium has a little bit of something for everyone.

As soon as you walk through the doors, you'll be greeted by the mesmerizing sights and sounds of the ocean. The aquarium's main tank, located on the first floor, is a true spectacle, featuring a variety of shark species including sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, and blacktip reef sharks swimming alongside colorful tropical fish.

What are  some of the exhibits visitors should see? 

Your first stop on the adventure should be the Texas Bayou exhibit! You'll feel like you've been transported to the marshy wetlands of the Gulf Coast that surrounds you. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, turtles, bullfrogs and other wild creatures that call this area home.

Next, dive into the depths of the ocean with a visit to the Shipwreck exhibit. Imagine yourself inside the hull of a sunken 17th century Spanish galleon and take in the beautiful diversity of marine life that surrounds you. Houston Interactive Aquarium is looking for a childcare provider for our staff members who would like to bring their children to work with them. Typically 2-5 children ages 1 year to 12 years.

We have a child’s playroom equipped with tables, chairs, toys, sleeping mats, pillows, blankets, a TV, and cabinets. This will be where learning, playing, eating, and sleeping will take place. The entire facility will be available for the children to roam and explore as the caregiver sees fit. The children’s parents will bring all the food, drinks, bottles, and diapers that the child will need for the day, so no cooking or bottle sanitation is required of you.

Cleaning the toys daily and a weekly deep clean of the playroom will be required. The potential candidate would need to be at the Austin Aquarium from 9:00 AM – 8:30 PM various days of the week. Flexible scheduling will be based on each candidate’s available schedule.

Sooo much fun. Loved the carnival rides and grounds. A good time. My daughter's daycare visited. We had children between ages 2-5.

We were unfortunately very disappointed in this aquarium. It was so small and the choice of sea life was minimal to none. When I saw the gift shop I tried to tell my family there must be another hall to enter to see more things but there was not. I would not waste your time going here.

I went with my toddler. He just learned to identify fishes so he enjoyed looking at the fishes. It’s not that huge and once you walk through and exit, you cannot re-enter. We must have walked through in about an hour. I only wish we had walked through slower (and we did take our time) just so I felt like I got the value for my money. Outside the train was not working so the only ride we could take was the carousel. So that was a bit of a downer. My tyke enjoyed playing in water outside the most... and that part was free! I’d recommend only if you love aquariums because I don’t think you get as much as you pay. The indoor ambience was pretty neat. They had a macaw and some white tigers inside as well which felt a bit out of place. The animals seemed enclosed in a very small space. I just hope they aren’t kept there 24/7 and get to be outdoors in their nature enviro as well.

Not overly impressed. Lots of fish to be seen and their tanks looked healthy and clean. Surprised to see so many animals too and in very small enclosures compared to natural habitat - many seemed depressed. Surprised there were midway style rides which were not worth the enormous lines triggered by spring break. Save your money and visit the incredible Children's Museum instead (unless you have the Citypass).

Terrible excuse of an aquarium. Very small crowded rooms, the aquarium is over before you know it. The white tigers are kept in an enclosure way way too small, it should be illegal. One of the tigers was pacing and clawing and jumping on the glass from stress. We need to run this aquarium out of business and get these animals to a safe and comfortable enclosure. The whole aquarium is a tourist trap, just a ruse to get money out of families that want to shut there kids up for a while. Do not attend this aquarium. If you can find time to go to the Dallas World Aquarium- where the animals are taken care of and not used for profit. Would give a negative star review if i could. We were supposed to go to the restaurant as well and decided not to give one more cent to this place- as they obviously are making money and obviously don’t use it to better the lives of the animals

I Liked how organized it was even though we went in peak season at a peak time. As soon as you walk in your already in a line to "tour" the aquarium then after two or three exhibits your can move on your own. Must tries would be the Sting Ray reef, the white tiger, and the amusment park outside wrapped it all together.

Downtown Aquarium, Houston Overview

Downtown Aquarium is located on Bagby Street and is the result of restructuring Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks Building. It has various exhibits as well as games and amusement rides. Downtown Aquarium brings forth entertainment in unique ways by means of Shark Voyage Train Ride which takes one through a 200,000-gallon shark tank close view of a variety of shark species.

Then there is Diving Bell Ferris Wheel, Aquatic Carousel, Lighthouse Dive, Frog hopper, and Aqua Wheel. The exhibits include the famous White Tigers of the Maharaja’s Temple, Stingray Reef, Sunken Temple, Rainforest, and Texas Bayou. Downtown Aquarium also offers a dining experience with its Dive Lounge. Furthermore, it is also involved with various scout programs and field trips to impart education and provide learning opportunities.

Downtown Aquarium Denver Field Trip

I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much. An aquarium in Denver Colorado? The square landlocked state? Please . I grew up in Florida for 30 years! I know aquatic animals. So you can imagine my complete surprise when I walked out of the Downtown Aquarium Denver looking into a family membership!

This was a fun field trip for many reasons, but my favorite being Hubs was able to go with us. He hasn’t been on many “homeschool field trips”. Sure – the museums in Italy and the canoe tours in Thailand. But the regular every-day type of field trips, he hasn’t been on any.

I grabbed discounted tickets for Homeschool Day , which was about $10/person off. That was enough for me to consider going. Otherwise I would have passed. We arrived and received 1/2 off parking, $4. I did not sign up for classes, we just wanted a self guided – Layton Pace – tour. Which means we can leave early if it was a bust. It wasn’t!

I was so impressed with the setup and inside decor. When we went to Sea Life in Orlando, I had high expectations. They are competing with Sea World and Epcot’s Aquariums. Sadly, they fell short. The Downtown Aquarium got it all right. Each section is broken up into different aquatic habitats and I saw some of the BIGGEST fish I’ve ever seen in my life.

Let’s recap. I’ve been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California on the Pacific Ocean. By far the best hands-on learning facility we’ve visited. We’ve been to Sea World in Orlando. Far more show entertainment than educational. Epcot was far less entertaining and more educational, but little hands-on learning opportunities. Just huge tanks. We’ve been down to the Florida Aquarium in Tampa on the Atlantic Ocean. This would definitely rank 2nd as far as hands-on educational right behind Monterey Bay. I’ve been inside the small sad aquarium in Washington DC. Zero hands-on learning stations, little tanks, little viewing area – not worth a stop. Not to mention living in St Augustine I’ve been to GatorLand a few times. Again another entertainment spot. so, I’ve been to a few aquariums in my time.

Downtown Aquarium at Denver was amazing. So when I say, “I saw some of the BIGGEST fish I’ve ever seen in my life” I mean it! I was hoping for more hands-on learning stations, but they offered a ton of information.

My only negative comment would be concerning the lame animatronics. Once you see the robot orangutan you don’t believe the tiger is real at all. My son required a lot of persuading. I know they can put something else there far more interesting. Again, since we had Disney Passes we’ve seen better furry robots than that. However – we skipped it quickly and kept on reading about the piranhas.

Lesson learned – not just about eels & otters. Give things a chance. You might be surprisingly, pleasantly surprised!!

The otter exhibit was great. My son read the signs about bubbles, fur & oxygen. He wanted to learn more when we got home. So we hit the library and grabbed a book on River Otters. He wanted to share the information, about otter pups , as a presentation at Classical Conversations. Win win!

This selection of the top 5 aquariums in the US is diverse and scattered across the country. They all contain a variety of different exhibits and there are different reasons why I have enjoyed each one of them so much.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, California

The Monterey Bay Aquarium , located in Monterey , California, is a renowned aquarium and marine science center that attracts visitors from all over the world – and for good reason. The aquarium’s mission is to inspire the conservation of the ocean, and it emphasizes education, research, and the promotion of sustainable practices to protect marine environments. Here you’ll find a wide range of exhibits and habitats, showcasing marine life from the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the exhibits I enjoyed the most during my visit included Kelp Forest, Open Sea, Sea Otters, Penguin Habitat, and the Tentacles special exhibition. The Kelp Forest exhibit really is a highlight, simulating the underwater environment of a giant kelp forest, where visitors can observe a diverse array of marine life, including fish and invertebrates. The Open Sea exhibit, meanwhile, is a massive tank with a 90-foot underwater tunnel, providing a unique perspective on species like sharks, rays, and tuna.

If you’re visiting with kids, they may enjoy the sea otter exhibit, where you can watch the playful antics of these charismatic marine mammals. My kids also loved the penguin habitat, which showcases African and Magellanic penguins, allowing visitors to observe their behaviors on land and underwater.

The aquarium also hosts special events, lectures, and programs throughout the year, so make sure to check the schedule before you go. I’d recommend looking for hotels in the downtown area, within walking distance of the aquarium.

Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta

The Georgia Aquarium is a prominent aquarium in Atlanta , Georgia, and is recognized as one of the largest in the world. Thanks to its impressive size, it houses millions of gallons of water and hosts a range of marine life. The Georgia Aquarium features several exhibits and galleries that showcase marine life from different regions and habitats. Some exhibits I enjoyed the most include the Ocean Voyager, Coral Lagoon, Amazon Rainforest, and the Georgia Explorer.

One of the highlights that makes this one of the best aquariums in the US is the Ocean Voyager exhibit, which features a massive acrylic tunnel through a large tank, providing visitors with a 360-degree view of marine life, including rays, sharks, and various fish species. The Coral Lagoon exhibit focuses on coral reefs and the diverse marine life that inhabit these vibrant ecosystems, making it educational and fun. The Amazon Rainforest exhibit, meanwhile, showcases the diverse, brightly colored flora and fauna found in the Amazon River and its surrounding rainforest. 

The Georgia Aquarium also features a live presentation called “Dolphin Celebration,” where guests can learn about and observe the aquarium’s resident dolphins showcasing their natural behaviors. It’s hard not to fall in love with these adorable creatures. When you visit, look for hotels in downtown Atlanta to be close to the action.

Keep in mind that Stingray feedings only happen until 2 pm, so try to get there in the morning if you want to get up close and personal with these animals.

Shedd Aquarium, Chicago

The Shedd Aquarium , located in Chicago , Illinois, is one of the oldest and best-known public aquariums in the United States. Situated on the Museum Campus in Chicago, near Lake Michigan and other cultural institutions such as the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium . I would recommend looking for hotels in downtown Chicago when visiting. 

The aquarium opened in 1930 and has since become a major cultural institution in Chicago. The building is a sight to behold thanks to its grand neoclassical architectural style, featuring grand columns and intricate details – it’s even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The aquarium houses a variety of exhibits and galleries showcasing marine life from different ecosystems. Notable exhibits include the Oceanarium, Wild Reef, Amazon Rising, and the Caribbean Reef.

The Oceanarium is a popular exhibit with a large aquatic presentation area with dolphins, sea lions, and penguins, where visitors can enjoy live shows and interactive performances. The Wild Reef exhibit focuses on the diverse marine life found in coral reefs and includes a walk-through tunnel that provides a unique underwater perspective. The aquarium also offers educational programs for visitors of all ages, including school groups, workshops, and interactive exhibits that highlight marine science and conservation. 

One of my favorite things about this aquarium is the unique opportunities it offers for visitors to take part in animal encounters, such as getting up close with penguins or interacting with beluga whales. This isn’t always part of the experience, even at the best aquariums in the US, so it’s definitely a major highlight. Visitors here can also take behind-the-scenes tours to learn more about the aquarium’s operations, animal care, and conservation efforts.

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, Tennessee

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is located in Gatlinburg , a popular tourist destination at the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The aquarium features a variety of exhibits showcasing marine life from different parts of the world – notable exhibits that I enjoyed include the Shark Lagoon, Penguin Playhouse, Coral Reef, and the Ocean Realm.

The Shark Lagoon is a real highlight, featuring a walk-through tunnel surrounded by a tank filled with sharks, rays, and other marine species. It truly feels out of this world. The Penguin Playhouse, meanwhile, offers an interactive experience with a colony of playful penguins, where visitors can observe the penguins both above and below the water. The Ocean Realm exhibit provides a panoramic view of a large tank filled with a variety of marine species, including sea turtles, rays, and large fish, that can be difficult to spot in the wild.

Kids will love the aquariums interactive touch tanks, where visitors can have hands-on experiences with marine animals like stingrays and horseshoe crabs. Throughout the year, the aquarium hosts special events, themed exhibits, and seasonal programs to engage visitors, so make sure to take a look at the calendar before you visit to see if there is something special going on. 

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is also involved in conservation initiatives, educational programs, and research aimed at promoting marine conservation and environmental awareness, so you can feel confident that your money is going to a good cause here. Beyond visiting the aquarium, you’ll find there’s plenty to do in the city. To be as well placed as possible, look for hotels in Gatlinburg that are close to the city center.

Florida Aquarium, Tampa

The Florida Aquarium is a popular marine science center and aquarium located in Tampa , Florida. It has numerous great exhibits to explore, which is why it’s in my list of the best aquariums in the US. Also, one of the things that I like about it is that it particularly focuses on local wildlife from Florida. The aquarium features a variety of exhibits and galleries that showcase marine life from the local area as well as spots around the world, including the Wetlands Trail, Bays and Beaches, Coral Reefs, and the Journey to Madagascar.

The Wetlands Trail exhibit highlights Florida’s diverse wetland ecosystems, featuring a boardwalk through mangrove forests and showcasing local wildlife. The Bays and Beaches exhibit explores Florida’s coastal environments, including seagrass beds, estuaries, and sandy beaches, where visitors can learn about the importance of these habitats.

The Coral Reefs exhibit focuses on the beauty and significance of coral reef ecosystems and includes vibrant coral formations and a variety of reef-dwelling marine species which are amazing to look at. The Journey to Madagascar exhibit provides a glimpse into the unique biodiversity of Madagascar, featuring lemurs, chameleons, and other species from the island.

The Florida Aquarium also offers a unique experience called “Dive with the Sharks,” allowing certified divers to swim with sharks in the main tank. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my diving license at the time, but it’s definitely something I plan on having before my next visit. Thanks to the fact that the aquarium is located in the Channel District of downtown Tampa, near the waterfront, I’d recommend staying in hotels near the center of Tampa.

If you’re visiting with kids, make sure to bring their swimsuits, as the Florida Aquarium has a great outside splash pad and they definitely will want to play there
