religious tours in India

Since forever, India has been considered as a land of diverse cultures and religions. People of different faiths undertake tours to numerous destinations to pay homage to their sacred deities. Besides North India, the central and southern regions of the country are also revered for their centuries-old temples, exquisite churches and mosques. These magnificent edifices and sites present the affluent religious bygone time and display the fascinating architectural brilliance of the country. Each one has a legend attached to it that still creates curiosity among pilgrims and tourists to visit them often. While places like Katra and Haridwar are known for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Mandir and Har ki Pauri, respectively, Puri is famous among Hindus for its Jagannath Temple. The world-famous Sri Harimandir Sahib, fondly known as Golden Temple, is the crown of the city of Amritsar. This place of grandeur and sublime tranquillity is a lot venerated by Sikhs. For the followers of Buddhism, Bodhgaya is a must-visit site as it was this place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment and became Buddha. Every year hordes of visitors travel to these attractions and others in proximity to offer prays. With dedicated tour packages, you can discover divine spirituality that has been persistent in the country from time uncountable, and experience the ultimate soul-quenching peace.

Here is a list of some major spiritualistic and religious centres of North India that are worth visiting at least once in your lifetime:

Amarnath cave, jammu & kashmir.

Amarnath Yatra

One of the most sacred shrines for Hindus, the holy ‘ Amarnath Cave ’ is located in a narrow gorge at the end of the ‘Lidder Valley’ in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Covered with snow for most of the year, the cave gets accessible to pilgrims for only a short duration in summers around the festival of Shravani Mela in July and August. It is believed that Lord Shiva unrevealed the secrets of life, death, moksha and immortality to Goddess Parvati in this holy cave. Large number of devotees gather here to get the divine darshans of the natural Shivlinga formed from ice in this cave.

Abode of Lord Shiva, the cave can be reached through a strenuous climb from Srinagar via Pahalgam or Baltal (Sonamarg). Chandanwari forms the major stopover along the Srinagar-Pahalgam-Chandanwari-Amarnath route. It is believed that Lord Shiva left his moon (Chand) at Chandanwari on his way to Amarnath and hence, this place got its name. Pilgrims can reach Chandanwari through various options of road transport from Srinagar and it is at Chandanwari from where a steep climb of around 16km. needs to be covered on foot or ponies to reach the Amarnath cave. The magic of picturesque vistas and an aura of complete spirituality and divinity all along the route helps the pilgrims forget all their fatigue, giving them an indescribable sense of motivation and power to reach their destination. Following are some of the major attractions of religious importance that can be seen along the route from Chandanwari to Amarnath:

  • Pissu Top – The ‘Pissu Top’ lies at only few kilometres from Chandanwari and the hike is so steep that even professional hikers sometimes seem to be struggling with the challenge of the climb. As per the legends, Pissu Top lies at top of the hill that was formed from the bones of Asuras who were killed by Devtas during a big battle.
  • Sheshnag Valley – At a distance of around 9 km. from Pissu Top, pilgrims reach their next stopover, the ‘Sheshnag Valley’. Mesmerizing views of the snow-covered mountains, turquoise blue lake and the Lidar glacier take your breath away once you reach the serene Sheshnag Valley. It is believed that it is at this valley where Lord Shiva left his Sheshnag before heading to the Amarnath Cave with Goddess Parvati. It is said that true devotees still get the darshans of Sheshnag at the Sheshnag Lake.
  • Mahagunas Pass – From Sheshnag, the next major milestone is at the ‘Mahagunas Pass’ or the ‘Ganesh Top’, the highest altitude point of the pilgrimage. Leaving behind Lord Ganesha here, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati made their way to the holy Amarnath Cave. The path leading to Mahagunas Pass from Sheshnag is considered to be the most dangerous climb of the Amarnath Yatra with huge boulders, sharp rocks and deep valleys along the route.
  • Panchtarni – From the Mahagunas Pass, a descend starts and Panchtarni lies at a distance of 3.4 km. Known for the five rivers that are believed to have been originated from the hairs of lord Shiva, Panchtarni gets its name. Also, as per the legends Lord Shiva here left the five elements of human life (earth, fire, water, air and sky). Located on the foothills of Mt. Bhairav, captivating views of the surrounding area remain in your memories forever.
  • Amarnath Cave – At a distance of 6km. from Panchtarni, lies the final destination, the holy Amarnath cave. Pilgrims perform Pooja inside the cave and pay homage to the Swayambhu ice Shivlinga. The divine aura inside the cave is strong enough to magnetize your minds and souls.

Christianity Pilgrimage Tour Package in India

Christianity refers to a monotheistic religion, and is based on the teachings of the Lord Jesus. Those who follow Christianity are termed as Christians. According to Christianity, Jesus is believed to be the son of the god and the revealer of the god. Jesus was a savior, who led a life full of suffering and then died.

It is believed that Christ again resurrected so as to bring salvation to all. Christianity started in the Middle East and then slowly spread to North Africa, Europe and other parts of the world. Christianity is the largest religion followed all over the world.

Christians share together basic beliefs which are enshrined in the Bible and in some early texts written by Christian leaders.

At the root of all Christian tenets lies the 'Law of Love' according to the command of Christ himself ’Love one another as I have loved you'.

'Eucharist' meaning 'thanks giving service' (Holy Mass) is offered by the priest, in the church, everyday. It is a must for all Christians to attend a mass on every Sunday. In this religious observance the Christians recall with gratitude the supper which Christ had with his disciples on the preceding night of his crucification.

At present there are about 25 million Christians in India. It is interesting to note that the Christian population in India is more than the entire population of Australia and New Zealand or total population of a number of countries in Europe. Kerala, Goa and Mizoram states have high concentration of Christian population in India. Kerala has the largest number of Christians among the states. Christians including Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants form the third largest group in India.

About 73% of the Christians in India are Catholics. The Catholic Church in India is composed of three individual Churches- Latin, Malabar and Malankara. Christian community includes Syrian Christians, Knanaya Christians, Goan Christians, Tamil Christians, Anglo-Indians, and Naga Christians etc. All these Christian communities differ in language, social customs and economic status.

Jesus: Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem of Judea in 4.B.C. Until he was 30, Jesus lived in Nazareth as an ordinary carpenter. Then he plugged into a very active public life for about three years. During these years he preached that God is a loving and merciful Father. Jesus insisted only on the necessity of showing our love towards God through loving our fellowmen without any distinction or reservation. He was the setting example for his own preaching. He treated both the sinner and the saint with the utmost love and respect. Jesus became a revolutionary figure among the Jewish religious leaders. They presented Gods as being always demanding, angry and ready to punish. They forced the ruling Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate to crucify and kill Jesus.

But the life of the Jesus did not end with his death on the cross. He rose from the tomb on the third day, thus proclaiming to the world the hope of universal resurrection after death. His disciples realized that Jesus was not an ordinary man, but the "Son of God" who really became man, in order to announce to the world, Gods love and concern for human race. He wanted to bring peace on earth. He strengthened his Apostles with the help of the Holy spirit, to preach his teachings and spread the good news about God the loving father to the entire human race.

The Bible : Bible, the holy book of the Christians has two parts, namely "The Old Testament" and "The New Testament". The old Testament presents Gods dealing with men before Christ and gives the history of the Jewish people roughly for a period of 2000 years before Christ. The New Testament records the life and preaching of Jesus, his death and resurrection, the growth of Christianity in its early years and the message of the Apostles sent to various churches.

Bible is considered as the holy book of Christians because it is believed that bible was written under the guidance and inspiration of God. The Bible has a collection of 73 books. In 'The Old Testament' 46 books and in 'The New Testament' 27 books.

Christian Pilgrimage in India : Christianity has a long relation with India. Christianity was introduced in India by St. Thomas or Doubting Thomas in 52 AD. St. Thomas had spent 12 years of his life in Madras Since then various shrines, churches; cathedrals have been constructed that have turned out to be the sites of Christian pilgrimage in India. . St. Thomas established seven Churches at: Kodungallur, Kottakkavu, Palayur, Kollam, Kokkamangalam, Niranam and Chayil.

Pilgrim Centers : India has some of the best-known Christian pilgrimage sites. The interesting thing about the Indian Churches is that, they reflect distinct archaeological designs. Here one can see Churches in British style, Portuguese style, and French style and of late many Churches according to Indian style were also constructed.

Some of the Christian pilgrimages are : Basilica The Church of St. Cajetan (Goa), Church of the Sacred Heart (Delhi), St. Thomas Cathedral at Mylapore in Madras where the grave of Apostle St. Thomas is venerated; St. Xavier's shrine at Bom Jesus Church at old Goa; the Church of Our Lady of Mount at Bandra, near Bombay; the Church of Our Lady of Health at Vailankanni on the coastal line east of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu; the Church of Our Lady at Sardhana near Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary at Bandel, in north of Calcutta; the shrine of St. Xavier at Kottar just north of Kaniyakumari; the Shrine of St. Theresa of Avila at Mahe, close to Tellicherry in North Kerala; at Oriyur in Ramnad district. In the Orthodox church of Manarkad near Kottayam, Mary's feast is celebrated on September 8 by St. Thomas Christians.
