Southampton Cruise Port – 7 Great Places to View Cruise Ships Sailing From Southampton

GUEST POST BY DAN FROM SOUTHAMPTON

When cruising from Southampton you might travel down a day or two before your trip starts.

If you enjoy watching the cruise ships sailing then this post is for you! Here is a list of seven places/ways you can go and watch the ships sailing from Southampton.

1. Mayflower Park

Set adjacent to the Holiday Inn, this large open park down by the water.

It is right beside the City Cruise Terminal. It’s ideal for watching any ship depart from there as well as any from the Mayflower Cruise Terminal.

It is no good for any ships that are down in the Eastern Docks. There is often an Ice Cream Van there (even in the middle of winter on occasion!)

So if it’s a lovely hot summer’s day and you fancy an Ice Cream whilst waiting for the ships to leave this is the place to go.

The best time of year to view the ships from Mayflower Park is from January to early June.

After this, the posts for the pontoons for the Southampton Boat Show get put up. (Even though the event isn’t until September) and then aren’t removed until around December so this will obscure your view.

2.Town Quay

This is probably the best-known location to go and watch the ships depart from.

Ships from the Mayflower and City Terminals come past here, and those in the Ocean Terminal come out close to the pier.

Town Quay was once the pier used by the old Paddle Steamers, back in the days of the great Ocean Liners.

If ships are in bow-first it makes an added spectacle as they have to turn in front of you before sailing off down towards the Solent.

Whilst it is also possible to view ships in the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal, they usually reverse around to turn off the Dock Head – so it isn’t the best place for ships moored there.

The pier has a “Pay and Display” car park. It also is the place to board the Hythe Ferry and Red Jets high-speed service to the Isle of Wight.

3. Hythe Marina Village

Probably one of the two best locations to view the ships when the weather is at its best is the Marina Village, just opposite Dock Head.

All ships that are moored in the docks will come past here. If they are docked starboard-side to at the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal then chances are you will see them turn directly in front of you.

There are two vantage points on opposite sides of the Lock Entrance to the Marina. Be careful of the extremely heavy gates that you go through to access the walkway.

Hythe can be accessed by both the Hythe Ferry and Bluestar Buses Nos.8 and 9.

Make sure you check the bus return times on a Sunday , as they finish earlier.

4. Weston Shore

Situated almost directly opposite Hythe is Weston Shore, probably best recognisable for its line of Tower Blocks.

There is a long beach where the ships can be viewed from – although they are quite a way out from the shore.

This can be tricky for seeing small ships such as Fred Olsen ’s Braemar or Azamara Journey.

It isn’t a problem for the mighty ships like Queen Mary 2, Britannia and Royal Princess.

The red No.2 bus frequently goes from Town Centre to Weston Shore. The drop-off point is by a Co-Op.

5. Royal Victoria Park

Another recognisable landmark for anyone sailing down Southampton Water is the tower of the former hospital at Netley.

It now is the centrepiece of Royal Victoria Country Park.

This location has a similar issue with distance from the ships as Weston Shore but it’s a great place to explore and is excellent for wide shots.

6. Calshot Spit

Reaching the end of Southampton Water is Calshot Spit.

It is here that the ships begin their turn to leave the water and enter the Solent. They then left again off Cowes to head east to the Nab Tower.

Calshot has a very long shingle beach and loads of parking space.

The old fort and the Radar Tower are the best place to watch the ships as they come close to there.

Just make sure you stand well back from the edge after the ship has passed. Otherwise their wash might get your feet wet!

Whilst this is probably the best place to watch the ships, it is also the trickiest to get to.

Whilst the Blue Star No.8 Bus does go there, they don’t run as often to Calshot in the evenings. It is preferred that you only go if you have your own transport.

7. From the Water

The final place to view the ships is from the water itself.

This can vary from the Hythe Ferry to Blue Funnel Harbour Tours based at Ocean Village.

As well as from the top deck of the Red Funnel car ferries or if you get the chance, take a cruise aboard the Glasgow-built Steamship “Shieldhall.”

You may have seen “Sheildhall” on a summer Saturday or Sunday sailing past your ship as you’ve departed from Southampton.

I hope you have found this list interesting and that it’s given you some ideas as to what to do if you come down for your cruise a day or two early!

I sailed out of Southampton on a Christmas Cruise to the Canary Islands. I was hoping to find a bit of winter sunshine, but that really wasn’t the case! Find out more about that trip here:

Emma says:  Thanks for this one so much Dan! Southampton is my closest cruise port so I’ve loved seeing all of these photos of the ships in port. Lots of my favourite ships there too! MSC Meraviglia, Royal Princess and Britannia!

I’m sure this post will help out people who are visiting Southampton. I LOVE that feeling when you first set eyes on a ship and realise you’ll be boarding her soon!

Hi, I am Dan and I live in the Southampton area where I regularly go to watch the cruise ships in Southampton and occasionally elsewhere.

I also take at least one cruise a year if I can, which I hope to build on in years to come.

Cool Cruiser

does anyone know if you can still pay for day visits when the ships are in Southampton?

Am in Southampton for the weekend and would love to take my friend who has never cruised on Indy or explorer next year when they are in port at the same time.

Hunted on here and web and canā€™t find anything, hoping they still do this!

Royal don't do ships visits at Southampton.

MSC, P&O and Cunard. The MSC have all sold out for this year. P&O no longer which ships are available to visit, you have to contact them and tell which ship you are interested in. Haven't seen much on their web site.

However try this site https://www.completecruisesolution.com/email_bulletins/Ship_visits_landing.html

On Rci it used to be that you pay šŸ’° for the ship visit and if you booked Ā on board you got that money back. Not sure how it works nowĀ

OnĀ X theĀ Visit is free...you can take advantage of the regular book on board benefits..free transfer..up to $500 obc

P&O Ā is now Ā£30 per person for a visit. MSC was Ā£20. Ā Cunard is Ā£50. All include lunch.

P&O offer the money back if you book a cruise.

Ā This year there were 20 dates for Cunard ships. Between 30th June to 8th December.

Princess visits are generally for Agents not public.

Most visits are for 40 odd guests.

One Day in a City

24 Hour Travel Itineraries to Make the Most of a Day in a Destination

One Day in Southampton, England Itinerary

July 20, 2021 By Gina Posts on this site may contain affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here .

Best Things to Do on a Southampton Day Trip

Looking for the top things to do in Southampton when short on time? This One Day in Southampton itinerary written by an expert has you covered. Find out the must-see sites plus the best places to stay near the city center and cruise terminal.

Famed as the cruise capital of Europe, the English port city of Southampton is a wonderful place to spend a day.

While many tourists choose to extend their cruise holiday with a day ashore in Southampton, this is also a great place to visit for anyone looking for a fun day out or weekend away in the South of England.

In this guide, Iā€™ll show you some of the best places to visit during a day in Southampton as well as some suggestions for where to stay overnight.

1-Day in Southampton Itinerary

Read on for all the top things to do in Southampton that you can’t miss out on during your day in the city.

Walk the QE2 Mile

QE2 Mile Sign Marker in Southampton

To start your day, I recommend that you head to Southamptonā€™s QE2 Mile. Located in the heart of the city, this pedestrian-friendly route runs from the Cenotaph down to the waterfront.

Southamptonā€™s High Street is lined with shops, restaurants and must-see places of interest such as the Titanic Memorial. Take your time as you stroll along this interesting street and youā€™ll find lots of historical sights to pique your interest.

Holy Rood Church is one of the top things to see during a day in Southampton.

As you pass the ruins of the Holy Rood Church, which was bombed in WWII, take a moment to step inside and admire the remains of the 14th century architecture and the memorials to the sailors of the Merchant Navy.

Across from the church is a very interesting shop called Robinā€™s Nest, which is set inside an old bank. Itā€™s packed with weird antiques and handmade gifts and is well worth a look. Also – if you have luggage that youā€™d rather not carry around the city with you, you can leave it here for the day!

Bargate, a medieval building along the QE2 Mile in Southampton, England.

Midway along the QE2 Mile, youā€™ll reach a striking building called The Bargate. Built around 1180, this medieval gatehouse once guarded the walled-off city center.

When you get hungry, youā€™ll find plenty of cafes serving traditional full English breakfasts in this part of the city.

Walk the City Walls

The city walls of Southampton are perfect for a walk during your day trip to Southampton

Southamptonā€™s city walls were built around the 10th century. Although they have been extensively attacked over the years, about half of the circuit remains intact. Itā€™s wonderful to see the ancient city walls mixed in with the modern architecture of the city.

The wonderful thing about Southamptonā€™s city walls is that you may walk along the top of many of them. Just head up the stone steps and youā€™ll get some great views of the city, as well as plenty of exercise from climbing up and down.

If you have a push chair or wheelchair with you, you can still follow the city walls as walking alongside the walls is a flat and easy route.

Go Ship Spotting

It's hard to miss spotting a cruise ship even if you have just one day in Southampton, England

As you follow the city walls towards the ocean, be sure to look out for any cruise ships that are in port.

Southampton has four cruise terminals, so thereā€™s a good chance that at least one or two large cruise ships will be in view at City Cruise Terminal and Ocean Cruise Terminal, as well as ferries and smaller boats at the Town Quay Marina.

If you search for cruise ship trackers online, youā€™ll be able to see which ships are in port during your stay. If youā€™ve never seen a cruise ship up close before, you may be shocked to see how big some of them actually are!

Have a Picnic in Mayflower Park

Mayflower Park in Southampton, UK

The perfect place to stop for a rest and a sandwich during your day in Southampton is Mayflower Park. Southampton has lots of lovely green parks, but this one also has the advantage of ocean views.

Located by the City Cruise Terminal, you can see cruise ships up close from here, and there are lots of benches where you can sit and enjoy the views.

Mayflower Park also has a fantastic little play area for kids, a cafe, and public toilets.

Visit a Medieval House

The Medieval Merchant's House is a great example of the unique architecture to behold during a day visiting Southampton, England.

Youā€™re sure to be amazed by the beauty of Southamptonā€™s ancient buildings, many of which youā€™ll arrive at unexpectedly as you wander around the city.

Some people think that Southampton is an ugly city as many of the buildings were built in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. However, I think that having medieval houses and pubs mixed in amongst affordable housing and cheap cafes makes them all the more striking.

If your visit is at a weekend between March and September, you can take a look inside a 14th century home called The Medieval Merchantā€™s House and get a glimpse of what life in Southampton was like in ancient times.

Spend the Evening at Ocean Village

Ocean Village is a great place for day trippers to spend an evening for dinner and ship watching in Southampton UK.

Southamptonā€™s Ocean Village is a marina with mooring facilities for tall ships and large yachts. Here, youā€™ll also find the cityā€™s tallest building plus lots of shops, restaurants, bars, and a cinema.

Ocean Village is the perfect place to enjoy an evening meal to finish off your day in Southampton. Whatever kind of food you fancy, thereā€™ll no doubt be something to suit you here. Many of the bars and restaurants have terraces where you can sit outside and enjoy a drink while you admire the marina views.

After dinner, head to the glass-fronted Harbour Lights Picture House to enjoy a blockbuster movie or independent film to round off your day.

How to Get to Southampton

Southampton UK seen from the waterways.

Southampton By Cruise Ship

If you visit Southampton for one day on a cruise, you should be able to walk to the city center from your ship, depending on which terminal it arrives into. The City Cruise Terminal and the Ocean Cruise Terminal are closest to the city center. If you arrive at Queen Elizabeth II Cruise Terminal or Mayflower Cruise Terminal, itā€™s about 30 minutes to walk so you may prefer to take a taxi.

Southampton By Car

Southampton has good links with the M3 and M27 motorways, which makes it easy to drive to and there are lots of car parks located in the city center.

If youā€™re driving to Southampton for a cruise, then you should arrange your Southampton cruise parking in advance to get the best deal.

Southampton By Train

Southampton Central train station is served by direct trains from all over England. It takes around 1 hour 20 minutes from London Waterloo and 2 hours 30 minutes from London Victoria. There are also direct trains from as far as Oxford, Birmingham, and Manchester.

Southampton by Plane

Southampton International Airport is around five miles from the city center. There are regular buses and trains that connect the city center of Southampton with the airport, or you can take a taxi or Uber.

Where to Stay in Southampton

Holiday Inn Southampton is a budget friendly place to stay in Southampton that is in the city center and near the cruise terminal.

Budget: If you just want somewhere to rest your head, Southamptonā€™s Holiday Inn is ideally located in the heart of the city center and is right by the City Cruise Terminal.

Mid-Range: Moxy Southampton is a modern and quirky, conveniently located boutique hotel. Located next to the Westfield Shopping Centre this fashionable hotel has a video wall in the lobby and hand-written messages on whiteboards everywhere.

Luxury: When only the best will do, why not check into the Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa? Designed to look like a superyacht and located on a private marina this contemporary hotel has stunning views towards the Isle of Wight.

Enjoy Your Day in Southampton, England!

Ideal for day trips, Southampton is compact enough that you can explore it all on foot. Itā€™s also pretty flat and so is accessible for wheelchair users and those exploring with babies.

Oftentimes when cruise ships call into Southampton, passengers may take excursions to London or the New Forest National Park. However, if youā€™ve never been to Southampton before, then I highly recommend it as a place to spend your day ashore.

Whether you visit before, during, or after a cruise, or just want somewhere interesting to visit for a day out, Southampton is a wonderful historic English city to explore.

You can get to Southampton and spend a day or more there before your cruise. Or, if your schedule permits, you can fly into London, spend several days there, and then make the journey down to Southampton.

We spent five days in London on our trip before journeying to Southampton. We had time on our calendar to permit this schedule before our Southampton cruise departure, and it made our journey seem like a few mini-vacations strung together.

If you travel to Southampton as part of a cruise itinerary, you’ll also need to decide how long to spend in Southampton. Getting to Southampton

Southampton is a well-connected city, making it easy to travel to from anywhere in the UK. The most popular way to reach Southampton is by train, which takes around 80 minutes from London’s Waterloo station. This was our mode of travel, and it cost us just over $100 U.S. for two passengers on one-way train tickets.

At the Southampton Train Station, youā€™ll see directions for Cruise Ship passengers getting off the train, as many people go straight from the station to the cruise terminal. You can take a taxi or bus from the train station to the city center, just a short distance away. We booked a stay at the Harbor Hotel, which was too far to walk from the train station. So, we hailed one of the many taxis available just outside the train station to drive us to our hotel.

If you prefer traveling by car , Southampton is easily accessible via the M3 and M27 motorways. The drive from London takes approximately 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions. There are also several coach services available, which offer affordable and comfortable transportation to Southampton.

The nearest airport for international travelers is Southampton Airport, just a short 15-minute drive from the city center. From here, you can take a taxi or bus to reach your destination in Southampton.

You can also arrange a private transfer from London Heathrow to Southampton Cruise Ports .

Exploring Southampton

As you journey through Southampton, you’ll notice its well-preserved medieval walls and stunning architecture. There are also several museums and galleries that showcase the city’s rich history. If you’re interested in learning about Southampton’s historic past, you’ll find history preserved in several museums.

You might be looking for things to do before a cruise in Southampton. Or, you might be interested in what to do on a day trip or a weekend in Southampton. Here are a few of the top sights and places to visit on your visit to Southampton:

Southampton City Walls

Southampton City Walls encompass an impressive half-mile-long stretch of medieval forts that survive from the age of pirates.

When originally built, these historical defensive structures encased the entire city. Constructed in the 1360s following an attack by French and Genoese Privateers, these walls played a crucial role in defending the population.   These walls have witnessed many significant historical events, including sieges, battles, and invasions.

Today, they are among the most complete city walls surviving in the United Kingdom.

We walked along the marked trail called “Walk the Southampton Walls. ” The trail spans 1.25 miles around the perimeter of the ancient medieval trading town. This captivating walk showcases 13 remaining towers, six city gates, and half a mile of robust stone walls and arcades.

Legend has it that the pirate Grimaldi, the attackers’ leader, used the loot from Southampton to establish the Principality of Monaco. Notably, these 14th-century walls served as the first structures in Britain to embrace the defensive technologies of gunpowder and cannon. Although the walls gradually fell into disrepair in the 18th century as their necessity diminished, many of Southampton’s older buildings are intricately built into, onto, or alongside these magnificent walls.

We walked among the old stone remains, took photos, and read the historical descriptions at several places, including the Medieval Mayor’s Wine Vaults, Westgate – a beautifully preserved medieval gatehouse, and the Bargate, one of Southampton’s most iconic landmarks – the ancient entrance into the medieval town.

Ruins at Southampton City Walls

Holyrood Church

After walking among the Southampton City Walls, it’s a short walk to see the ruins at the Church of the Holyrood.

Holyrood Church in Southampton, a medieval church with a rich history, was tragically destroyed during World War II bombing raids and never fully restored, although the ruins remain preserved.  Initially built in 1320, the church has a rich historic significance.

The Middle Ages saw Holyrood Church in Southampton serving as the central place for worship at the heart of the town. It became a significant focal point, attracting crusaders en route to the Holy Land, soldiers marching to Agincourt in 1415, and even Philip II of Spain in 1554, who stopped there on his journey to marry Queen Mary at Winchester Cathedral. Holyrood Church was indeed a historic hub of activity, playing a vital role in the town’s vibrant past.

In November 1940, the port city was blacked out during a German bombing raid. However, the German Luftwaffe used the white-painted spire of nearby St. Michaelā€™s Church as a landmark and dropped nearly 10,000 bombs on the city. The destruction in the historic city center was immense.

During the WWII Blitz, the church suffered significant damage, with only the tower and chancel remaining intact. The destruction resulted in the loss of the wooden spire and the great west window, while the central area of the church was utterly destroyed.

Saved from complete removal, the bombed-out ruins were transformed into a stunning memorial garden in 1957.

Today, it is a memorial to merchant sailors who once worshipped here and victims of the Titanic.

We walked through the ruins that were accessible to us. Inside the roofless structure, the Southampton Oral History Unit audio displays provided narration from people connected to the Titanic disaster and the church’s destruction. We spent several minutes listening to both audio displays.

God’s House Tower

Godā€™s House Tower is a historic structure located at the south-east corner of the city walls. Originally a gatehouse in the late 13th century, the structure got its name from the nearby hospital of Godā€™s House, which assisted impoverished travelers since 1168.

God’s House Tower evolved into a fortification designed to accommodate cannon weaponry. It played a significant role in protecting the area and functioned as a storage space for gunpowder, guns, and ammunition.

The need for defense diminished in later centuries, and the building was transformed into the Town Jail during much of the 1700s.

Eventually, in 1961, the Museum of Archaeology was established within the tower, providing a glimpse into the rich history of Southampton.

Mayflower Memorial

The next stop is the Mayflower Memorial. Located on Town Quay, the Grade II listed monument commemorates the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers to America aboard the Mayflower and Speedwell in 1620.

In Southampton, the Mayflower stopped for repairs before embarking on its journey to the New World. The ship also took on additional passengers and supplies in the city, making it an integral part of the Mayflower’s voyage.

The memorial was erected in 1913, with a dedication ceremony attended by descendants of the Pilgrim Fathers. It is a 50-foot-high column of Portland Stone and bears the names of those who sailed on the Mayflower and a bronze plaque depicting the ship itself.

We visited the monument to reflect on the courage and determination of those who sailed on the Mayflower over 400 years ago. The memorial serves as a reminder of Southampton’s role in American history and its enduring ties to the United States.

The Weigh House

On French Street, you can visit the Weigh House.  It housed the royal Tron, or the renowned weigh beam scales and weights, dating back to the mid-thirteenth century. This landmark played a crucial role in weighing merchandise, notably wool before they embarked on their journey from Southampton to various ports across Europe.

Southampton Castle

Southampton Castle was built after the Norman conquest and played a crucial role in the wine trade through Southampton docks. It was upgraded in the 13th century, becoming equipped with cannons. However, it declined in the 16th century and was eventually sold off.

Today, only a few remnants of the castle remain visible in Southampton. The Castle Watergate, built in the 13th or 14th century, is still preserved and forms a part of the city walls.

Visiting here, you can explore Castle Vault and learn about the castle’s history through guided tours and informative panels.

Titanic Memorials

You can walk to numerous memorials in the city center dedicated to preserving the memory of the Titanic. The city recalls the history from April 10th, 1912, when the ā€˜unsinkableā€™ ship called Titanic departed Southampton port. With 3,327 passengers and crew on their way to New York, it would hit an iceberg four days later and sink.

Several memorials in the city pay tribute to the victims of the Titanic. The memorials pay homage to the engineer officers, the crew, musicians, sea-post officers, restaurant staff, and local victims.

The Solent Sky Museum

Rated #1 on TripAdvisor, this museum showcases the city’s rich aviation history with an extensive collection of aircraft and flying boats, including many iconic models from military and civil use.

And it’s where you can visit the birthplace of the Spitfire. Hampshire and Solent were centers for aviation research between 1910 and 1960. During this period, over 26 aircraft manufacturers were here and built craft ranging from biplanes to spacecraft.

If youā€™re a fan of aviation history, plan to stop at the Solent Sky Museum.

Steamship Shieldhall

Rated #2 on TripAdvisor, the Steamship Shieldhall in Southampton is the largest working steamship in Britain. Built in 1955, Britain’s last surviving steam-powered coastal cargo ship played a crucial role in transporting goods along the UK’s coast.

It is a tribute to Britain’s maritime heritage, operated by dedicated volunteers. Visitors can experience the golden age of steam by enjoying excursions or visiting the ship.

Explore the impressive engine room with its original steam engines and the traditional bridge with gleaming brasswork. And you can see the ship’s steam-assisted steering gear, similar to that used on the Titanic.

Today, the Steamship Shieldhall offers day cruises during the summer, taking guests on a nostalgic journey to the Golden Age of Steam. A dedicated team of volunteers, from the captain to the deckhands, keeps the entire operation afloat and ensures the ship’s continuous seaworthiness. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, the Shieldhall will continue to sail through the seas for many more years.

If you want to visit the steamship, check its website for sailing dates – primarily on weekends in the summer.

SeaCity Museum

#4 on TripAdvisor is the SeaCity Museum, which brings Southampton’s rich history and maritime connections to life. The museum showcases the intriguing stories of the people of Southampton, including their fascinating lives and significant role in the Titanic story.

Explore the interactive exhibits, such as a 1:25 scale model of the Titanic, the immersive ‘Disaster Room,’ and a courtroom recreation of the Inquiry held after the tragedy. Beyond the Titanic, the museum also highlights Southampton’s position as a gateway to the world through its historic collections and tales of those who have arrived or departed from the port over the past 250,000 years.

The museum offers a family-friendly environment with hands-on activities and facilities for children.

Mayflower Theatre

Another top 5 location on TripAdvisor is The Mayflower Theatre. If you enjoy the theater, youā€™ll find a variety of touring musicals, opera, ballet, and comedy shows. The theater has a stunning restaurant called Ovation, where you can enjoy exceptional seasonal menus.

New Forest National Park

Shopping in Southampton

After exploring Southampton’s rich history and natural beauty, you may want to indulge in some retail therapy. One of the best places to do so is at Westquay Shopping Centre.

Located in the heart of Southampton, Westquay is a shoppersā€™ paradise with over 100 stores and a plethora of restaurants and cafes. Opened in 2000, it has been a popular destination for locals and tourists, offering a diverse range of high street and luxury brands.

Not only does Westquay cater to fashion lovers, but it also has an impressive selection of home decor stores, electronics shops, and beauty salons. You can shop ā€˜til you drop, then grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or relax with a cup of coffee at one of the cafes.

Safety in Southampton

Safety can be subjective and vary depending on factors such as the time of day, the specific area within the city, and individual experiences.

However, according to Numbeo’s Crime Index 2022, Southampton has a moderate crime rate with a score of 45.99 out of 100 (with 100 being the highest level of crime). This means that while crime does occur, it is not considered excessively high compared to other UK cities.

Regarding safety, the Safety Index for Southampton is rated at 54.01 out of 100 (with 100 being the safest). It’s important to note that these ratings are based on visitors’ perceptions of this website in the past three years.

During our visit, we found ourselves being watched and followed near St. Michael the Archangel Church in an area that was not populated with other people. Looking like tourists with our GoPro cameras and vlogging devices, we noticed a couple of men lurking in corners behind us and continued to track our movements wherever we went. We quickly made our way towards a busy shopping area where there was a police presence, and it was here that we finally shed our followers. Ultimately, nothing happened, but we watched our backs for over one hour.

Again, it’s always advisable to stay vigilant, be aware of your surroundings, and take standard precautions to ensure personal safety.

The Food Scene in Southampton

Southampton is a city known for its rich maritime history, and this is reflected in its food scene. With easy access to fresh seafood, visitors can expect to find a variety of dishes featuring locally caught fish and shellfish.

In addition to seafood, Southampton also has a diverse range of international cuisines due to its multicultural population. From traditional British dishes like fish and chips to Indian curries, Italian pasta, and Chinese stir fry, there is something for everyone in Southampton.

Visitors can also explore the local farmers’ markets and try out fresh produce from the surrounding countryside, such as Hampshire’s famous strawberries.

Overall, Southampton offers a vibrant food scene with many options for various tastes and budgets. Whether you’re looking for a fancy dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant or a quick bite at a street food vendor, you’ll find it in Southampton. So come hungry and ready to explore the city’s delicious offerings!

Maritimo Lounge

The menu for lunch at Maritimo Lounge is versatile, offering something for nearly every palate. For our lunch at Maritimo Lounge, we started with a soup of the day: a carrot, tomato, and onion vegetable offering.  This was served with ciabatta rolls and butter; this was an excellent start to lunch.

We had one Honey Roasted Beetroot and Feta Flatbread order for our entree. This entree had chickpeas, tomato and red pepper salsa, pomegranate seeds, and mint on a flatbread.  This combination satisfied us and kept us going until dinner time.

Tea is served in a teapot with a little milk vessel on the side.

The lunch experience was enjoyable, and the menu was robust.

Harbar Restaurant at the Harbour Hotel

You’ll find enjoyable dining on the 6th floor of the Harbour Hotel for a dinner option. Called the Harbar Restaurant, we enjoyed views of the Marina from our table, and seating options include indoor and outdoor tables.

The menu has excellent options available – and the bar menu is immense. For dinner, our entrees include sweet peas and mint tortellini served with asparagus and a quinoa salad (cauliflower, kale, carrot, chickpeas, tahini), which we accompanied by a glass of Merlot.

It is a lovely dining experience, reasonably priced, in a very attractive location.

  • Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa
  • Premier Inn Southampton City Centre Hotel
  • Holiday Inn Southampton
  • The Elizabeth House Hotel
  • Double Tree by Hilton

Walk into the center of Southampton, where you can see the remains of the city’s medieval walls. Shopping is excellent in the town, with all your high street favorites I,ncluding the iconic British department store John Lewis, whose flagship store is on Oxford Street in London. Restaurants of all price ranges are abundant, as are cafĆ©s and pubs in the city.

To walk the city, start at Town Quay and walk along the medieval town walls through the Old Town. You’ll find cozy cobbled streets and Tudor timber-framed buildings reminiscent of famous visitors such as William Shakespeare and Jane Austen.

Before starting your cruise from Southampton, you will need a car for local day trips to make the most of the spectacular south coast. Europcar is reliable if you need to rent a car. If you are visiting from abroad, remember to check if you need to apply for an international driving license before you leave home.

4 fantastic ways to see the best of England’s south coast

Day 1: isle of wight and the needles.

Take a boat ride over to the Isle of Wight ! This little island visible from the beaches of southern England was once the summer home of Queen Victoria. You can visit her home, Osbourne House, north of the island.

Stunning sandy beaches and beautiful walking paths cover the island, whmous for its dinosaur fossils. It gets busy in the summer, so if you are starting a cruise from Southampton in June, July, or August when kids are on school vacation, start early to avoid the crowds.

Open top bus for the best views of the Isle of Wight

From Southampton, you can either ride the passenger ferry, which takes about 20 minutes, r drive your rental car onto the car ferry for a pleasant 50-minute journey. You can leave your car, sit on the top deck in the sun, and enjoy the trip.

Once there, you will cover more sights in your vehicle than the slower public transport, but both options are viable. If you prefer to be a foot passenger, we recommend buying a bus ticket that gives you a day pass to travel around the island as much as you want within 24 hours. There are some great bus routes – try the open-top ride on the Needles Breezer for breathtaking views.

On the island’s western point, you can see The Needles – three enormous white chalk rocks standing in the ocean and guarded by a 19th-century lighthouse.

In the center of the island stands Carisbrooke Castle, earlier an artillery fortress, a king’s prison, and a royal summer residence. There are many walking paths and hiking trails over the island. Check out the Isle of Wight’s official visitor’s website to help you plan your day.

Day 2: Stonehenge – one of the most popular cruise excursions

Stonehenge is a 45-minute drive northeast of Southampton, located just outside the historic city of Salisbury and the iron-age site of Old Sarum. Start your day at the visitors center and museum, a short walk from the car parking area. A shuttle bus takes you out to the site. Built of Welsh stone over 4000 years ago, Stonehenge is surrounded by myth and legend, and its meaning and purpose have been long debated.

A pub dinner in historic Salisbury

At the end of your visit to Stonehenge, drive to Salisbury and park in one of the city’s parking garages. Enjoy an evening meal at one of the many pubs before your return to your hotel in Southampton. We recommend the historic Haunch of Venison for great gastropub dishes.

We dorecommend renting a car and drivingut to Stonehenge yourself. But if you don’t feel you can tackle driving on the left, book a tour. Viator does a good one; you can even plan to visit on your final day after your cruise. Leave the port of Southampton after you disembark and visit Salisbury, Stonehenge, and even Windsor Castle on your way back to London for your flight home. Alternatively, ask your cruise company. Many of them offer Stonehenge as an excursion pre or post-cruise. It’s a great day out!

Day 3: The New Forest, Lymington, and Beaulieu

Walking trails in the new forest.

Just a 30-minute drive west of Southampton through country lanes, The New Forest offers many adventures, from rugged country walks to lazy picnic days. Once the hunting ground of King Henry VIII, the ancient woodland is packed full of pretty villages. , startn the village of Burley.

Begin early and pick one of the named walking paths to follow, and you’ll come across free-roaming cattle, deer, donkeys, and the famous New Forest ponies.

Try our favorite walking trail, Castleman’s Corkscrew Walk, which starts in Burley Forestry Commission car park on Burley Road and takes you across pretty heathland. The local hotel Burley Manor is a good spot for coffee and snacks.

English riverside delights in Lymington.

From Burley, drive 20 minutes to the coast and the quaint town of Lymington .

You may want to eat an early lunch here, preferably at one of the small restaurants by the river at the bottom of the Georgian-style high street. Try The Kings Head Inn or The Ship Inn on the quayside for pub-style food.

Stop for delicious ice cream at the New Forest Ice Cream Parlour before renting a bike to cycle along the coast and through the forest. Helpful staff will provide you with great bikes and a route map.

Beautiful Beaulieu – a hidden forest gem

From Lymington, head to Beaulieu , located on the southeastern edge of the forest.

Beaulieu Village and Buckler’s Hard – a unique 18th village where Nelson’s warships once were built –  are fantastic to explore. Beaulieu is home to Britain’s National Motor Museum, and your kids can sample go-kart racing and see the cars in The World of Top Gear.

There is so much to see and do at Beaulieu; you could make this a full day out and leave Lymington for another day. See if you can squeeze in both before you start your cruise from Southampton.

Day 4: The Jurassic Coastline – our top pick for the best day out

If you have time for only one day out before your cruise from Southampton, choose The Jurassic Coastline . We have left the best till last. And for a good reason.

This part of the coastline along southern England stretches 96 miles east to west and starts from Old Harry Rocks on the Isle of Purbeck in the county of Dorset, ll the way to the next county, Devon. Getting to Old Harry Rocks will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Southampton, so an early start is essential.

This is possibly one of our favorite spots in all of England. You can travel as far as you want, stopping at seaside towns as often as you like.

But even better is if you can stay the night on your way to make the most of this fabulous coast. Called the Jurassic Coast due to its 180 million-year-old historic rock formations, the landscape will take your breath away. Here are our top stops to explore:

Old Harry Rocks

Located at Handfast Point in Studland, this marks the eastern point of the Jurassic Coast. The whole area is a UNESCO world heritage site. On a clear day in the distance, you can see The Needles on the Isle of Wight. Park at the South Beach car park to walk out to see Old Harry. The village of Studland is a short drive away.

Corfe Castle

Rich in history and an exciting place for children to run around, Corfe Castle is fantastic to visit on a sunny day.

Over a thousand years old, from the period of William the Conqueror, the castle ruins sit on a hill at the top of Corfe Village. You’ll pay for entrance at the gate to access the ruins.

Visit the 16th village for a great pub lunch – we love The Greyhound in the center of the town. There is even a model village signposted, which your children will love exploring.

Lulworth Cove

The cove is part of the Jurassic Coast and popular with hikers and walkers. It is bustling in the summer months. Arrive early to get the closest parking spot, and take a picnic to relax and enjoy the view. The beach is full of rock pools and caves waiting to be explored.

Durdle Door

You can follow the footpath from Lulworth Cove and walk about 30 minutes to Durdle Door. Perhaps one of the most photographed spots in Southern England, this rock formation juts out at the end of the stony beach. If you don’t want to venture onto the beach, drive to the Durdle Door lookout instead for spectacular views.

Chesil Beach

From Durdle Door, drive towards Weymouth Bay. If you didn’t have lunch at Corfe, thymouth Bay has plenty of seaside eateries to tempt you along the way. From Weymouth, continue driving towards Portland. There are plenty of opportunities to have a great view of Chesil Beach.

Chesil is no regular beach – rashingle barrier separated from the mainland by a shallow tidal lagoon. It has to be experienced to be believed. The beach is at the mercy of mother nature as the rough seas swirl up stones along its 28 km stretch. Wear good shoes and enjoy the walk. It’s windy and fabulous.

This little seaside port deserves an overnight stay if you have time to spare. Its history dates back to the 8th century, lo the middle of the Jurassic Coast. You are now in the county of Devon. Shop in the tiny winding streets, try fishing and water sports o,r join an organized fossil hunting trip. This is a gem on the south coast, especially if you are traveling with children.

One day in a location is never enough to see all of it, so you might have to prioritize what you want to do.

Also depending on your mode of transportation, London is about 1,5 – 3 hours away from Southampton Cruise Port. That means you have to think carefully if it is worth it depending on your departure & arrival times.

If you only have a few hours in this port of call, you might be better off with a shore excursion in the area nearby.

Here are a couple of things you can choose from when planning your day:

  • Booking a Shore Excursion
  • Book a Private Transfer to London
  • Self-Organized Day Trip to London
  • Renting a Car and Exploring the Countryside

About the Southampton Cruise Terminal

Southampton Cruise Terminal is a big deal in the UK for cruises. It is the main gateway for ships going to Europe, the Caribbean, and beyond.

The Southampton Cruise Port is about 80 miles outside of London. It has a special connection to the Titanic, so it is worth checking out by itself.

The port has 5 different terminals, that we’ll be looking at in detail in a bit.

Map of the Southampton Cruise Port with all terminals in colorful circles

šŸ“ Mayflower Cruise Terminal, Berth 106, Herbert Walker Avenue, Western Docks, Southampton, SO15 1HJ

It’s pretty modern and has a lot of amenities. If you’re looking for comfort, this is your spot.

Access to this terminal is via Dock Gate 10 (purple).

Lots of cruise lines like P&O Cruises and Cunard use it.

šŸ“ Ocean Cruise Terminal, Berth 46/47, Eastern Docks, Southampton, SO14 3QN

The Ocean Terminal is super sleek and new. It’s got this cool glass design and even a rooftop lounge.

You can access it via Dock Gate 4 (blue).

If you’re into that Instagram-worthy aesthetic, you’ll love it here. It is mostly used by the Carnival Corporation.

šŸ“ City Cruise Terminal, Berth 101, Solent Road, Western Docks, Southampton, SO15 1AJ

The city cruise terminal is all about convenience. It’s the closest to the city center.

It’s not as fancy as the others but gets the job done.

You access it via Dock Gate 10 (yellow).

It is mostly used by Royal Caribbean, MSC and NCL.

šŸ“ QE2 Cruise Terminal, 38/39 Test Road, Eastern Docks, Southampton, SO14 3GG

It is often called the QEII. This one’s a bit older but still pretty chill.

Good for smaller ships and offers awesome views of the water.

You access it via Dock Gate 4 (red).

šŸ“ Horizon Cruise Terminal, Berth 102, Herbert Walker Avenue, Western Docks, Southampton, SO15 1HJ

The Horizon (or Berth 102) Cruise Terminal is the newest terminal in Southampton.

It was constructed together by MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

3. Self-Organized Day Trip to London

  • National Express Coach: Super fast, but you need to walk to Southampton City Center. Ends at Victoria Coach Station.
  • Private Car : You can book a private transfer. Pricey but comfy.
  • Taxi : You can grab one right at the port, but it’ll cost a bit more than other options.
  • Car Rental: If you wanna explore at your own pace, renting a car is cool. Just mind the UK driving rules! Check DiscoverCars for amazing offers.

London Walking Tour (History & Culture)

My favorite way to explore London in one day is by walking. The city center is super walk-able, and you pass by many sights in a short amount of time.

I have created the ultimate London Walking Tour Map for you. It takes you along the major sights and most famous buildings in London.

The walking time is about 2 hours. With stops in between, you will be able to keep busy all day. It starts and ends at the Waterloo Station.

This London Walking Tour includes all the major cultural and historical sights . If you want an alternative route, keep looking further down.

For more information on the stops keep on reading below.

The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel right on the River Thames in London. Super iconic.

You hop into these big, glass pods and get amazing views of the city. It takes about 30 minutes to do a full loop. Great for photos and just soaking in the London vibe.

A must-see if you’re into travel and amazing views!

the author next to the london eye ferris wheel in a pink sweater

The next stop on my London walking tour is the Big Ben. Big Ben is another must-see in London!

Technically, “Big Ben” is the nickname for the bell inside the tower. But most people use it as a synonym for the whole clock tower.

The Big Ben is right next to the UK Parliament. It was built in the 19th century.

When it chimes, you really feel like you’re in London. It’s been through renovations, but it’s still a classic spot for tourists and history lovers!

beautiful bell tower in london big ben with the sun in the background

Westminster Abbey is a beautiful church that will take you back in history,

It’s not just any church. Kings and queens have been crowned there for centuries.

Lots of famous poets and scientists are buried there too. It has amazing architecture and it’s right near Big Ben and Parliament so you can just walk over.

Whether you’re into history, culture, or just cool old buildings, it’s a must-see!

Buckingham Palace is the King’s official London home, and it’s super fancy! It is one of the must-visit stops on this 1 day in London itinerary. When I visited, it was still Queen Elizabeth II that lived there.

The guards in red uniforms and those iconic black hats are posted right outside, super fancy. The palace has a ton of rooms and a beautiful garden.

If you’re there at the right time, you can catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. It’s a whole show and super British.

Plus, if the King is home, they’ll hang out a special flag.

The walk from Buckingham Palace toward Trafalgar Square is also quite nice. You’ll walk right between St. James Park and the Green Park.

beautiful flower field with orange tulips and the buckingham palace in the background

Trafalgar Square can be described as the living room of London . Its a lively place where people hang out and stuff happens.

In the middle, there is a big column with a statue of Admiral Nelson on top.

Around the square, you’ll find cool art galleries like the National Gallery . It’s a popular spot for events, protests, or just feeding the pigeons.

Trafalgar Square is a real mix of history, culture, and everyday London life!

trafalgar square with fountain in the middle

If you have enough time in your London walking tour, you need to hop by Piccadilly Circus.

Piccadilly Circus is London’s flashy, busy hangout spot. Kind of like the Times Square in New York, but with a British twist.

There’s this big LED display, lots of shops, and theaters. Chinatown is also around the corner.

You’ll find tourists, locals, street performersā€”all kinds of people. It’s super close to other cool areas like Soho and Leicester Square.

the author walking through chinatown in london

Covent Garden is a shopper’s and foodie’s paradise in London (perfect for me!).

It’s got this cool market where you can find all sorts of stuffā€”crafts, food, you name it.

The area is also famous for street performances like magicians, musicians, and more . Plenty of cute cafes and pubs are around to grab a bite or a coffee.

It’s lively, it’s charming, and there’s always something going on. If you’re looking for a mix of classic and quirky, Covent Garden is the place to be!

My tip: if you are more into fancy designer brands, you need to check out Harrods instead.

beautiful covent garden with a cafe with table and chairs and flower bouquets

St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of London’s standout landmarks and you should definitely pass by on your London walking tour.

It’s got this massive dome that you can see from all over the city. The cathedral has been around since the 17th century.

Inside, it’s all grand and ornate. You can even climb up for a killer view of London.

It is also a hotspot for big events, like royal weddings and national celebrations .

On your way back to the Waterloo Train Station, you will want to pass by the London Bridge or the Tower Bridge.

People often mix these two up!

London Bridge is more low-key. It’s mainly just a way to get across the River Thames, but it’s got history.

Tower Bridge is the show-off with the two big towers and a drawbridge in the middle. You’ve probably seen it in movies or photos. You can walk across it and even go up into the towers.

Both are cool in their own way, so its up to you which one you choose for your crossing.

the authors husband in front of the tower brdige

Borough Market is a food lover’s dream in London. It’s one of the oldest markets around , and it’s near London Bridge.

The place is packed with food stalls selling everything from fresh produce to international street-food.

Think cheese, bread, spices, and so much more . If you’re into trying different flavors and love a bustling atmosphere, Borough Market is a must-visit!

London Walking Tour (Authentic London)

If history and culture are not as much your thing, and you want to see more of “authentic” London, you are in the right spot. You can also spend your 1 day in London exploring the other fancy boroughs.

This second, alternative London Walking Tour Map will guide you through the other interesting boroughs of London: Belgravia, Kensington, Notting Hill and Mayfair.

There are less sights on this route. Instead you can find fancy shopping, impressive parks, cute cafƩs and charming suburbs filled with colorful houses.

London walking tour map of authentic london through the fun boroughs

Mayfair is known for upscale elegance.

Mayfair offers high-end shopping on Bond Street, stunning Georgian architecture.

You can also enjoy lush green spaces like Grosvenor Square. Walk down park lane and see luxurious hotels that offer delicious afternoon tea.

It’s a hub for luxury, fine dining, and art galleries.

Notting Hill is a charming neighborhood in London known for its colorful houses.

It has a great atmosphere and diverse community. Portobello Road Market is a highlight, where you can shop for antiques, fashion, and street food.

The area is quite famous for the movie “Notting Hill,” starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. It’s a great spot with a mix of boutiques, cafes, and great vibes.

Ah, Kensington! It’s a posh area in London. It is known for its beautiful gardens and upscale shops.

You’ll find Kensington Palace there, where some royals live. It’s also home to cool museums like the Natural History Museum.

Great spot if you love history and culture! Plus, plenty of chic cafes for when you need a break. Definitely a must-visit!

Belgravia is another fancy spot in London, super close to Buckingham Palace.

Think grand homes, elegant squares, and lots of embassies. It’s the kind of place where you might bump into a celebrity.

Shopping is upscale, mostly designer stuff. If you’re into classic British vibes and high-end living, you’d love it there!

typical london phone booth in red with a fancy building in the background

My favorite place to lunch in London is Aubaine at Selfridge’s.

The cute cafe is covered in purple wisteria and is super chic. The food is amazing and it is the place to be. It is one of the most instagrammable cafƩs in London.

If you want something more traditional, check out Caffe Concerto.

Of course, you should also try traditional English Afternoon Tea if you spend 1 day in London. I can recommend Afternoon Tea at the Hilton Park Lane or The Shard (with a view).

Of course you can also rent a car at the Southampton Cruise Terminal and explore the area at your own pace.

Whether you ride to London or stay in the area, the choice is yours. Just keep in mind that the British drive on the other side of the street.

Here are some ideas on where you can stop by on your road trip:

  • New Forest – A nature lover’s paradise just 30 minutes away. Ponies, trails, and all that green stuff!
  • Stonehenge – An hour’s drive to see these iconic ancient stones. A bucket-list kinda place.
  • Portsmouth – About 30 minutes out. Historic ships, museums, and beaches. Lots to do!
  • Winchester – Only 20 minutes away. Old-school cathedral, cobblestones, and a chill vibe.
  • Isle of Wight – You’ll need a ferry, but beaches, cliffs, and even dino fossils await!
  • Salisbury – Around 40 minutes to get there. It’s got a gorgeous cathedral and a cute town center.
  • Oxford – An hour and a half drive, but hello, it’s Oxford! Universities, libraries, and historic streets.
  • Bath – About 1 hour 30 minutes away. Roman baths, Georgian architecture, and chill spas.
  • Brighton – Just over an hour’s drive. Beaches, piers, and that cool, artsy atmosphere.
  • Bournemouth – Around 40 minutes. Sandy beaches and a fun pier. Great for some sun and sea!

There is not a whole lot you need to pack for spending one day in London. But there are a few things find their way in my handbag at every shore excursion I take.

Here are my favorite things to pack:

  • Umbrella – Because London weather is super unpredictable.
  • Comfortable Shoes – You’ll be walking a lot, from the Tube to the sights.
  • Portable Charger – Keep your phone juiced up for pics and maps.
  • Travel Guide – I love reading up on sights and history in between stops
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated and be eco-friendly at the same time.

Spending the day in London on your cruise to Southampton Cruise Terminal is a great idea. You can either catch the train or book a designated driver.

In this post I showed you two alternative walking routes that will take you to all the best spots in London in just one day.

Make sure to download the London Walking Tour Maps for your shore excursion.

If you decide that going to London all the way is not worth it after all, you might enjoy exploring Salisbury, Stonehenge or Windsor Castle with a guided tour from the Cruise Port.

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

ā€œAt this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,ā€ Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean Internationalā€™s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement that it was ā€œclosely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seasā€™ ongoing and upcoming sailings.ā€

ā€œWe are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,ā€ the company said. Royal Caribbean International will contact guests and travel partners once plans are final, the operator said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The shipā€™s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk ā€œwhile Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.ā€

ā€œOur thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,ā€ Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. ā€œWe appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.ā€

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments ā€œand make adjustments if needed.ā€

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was ā€œdeeply saddenedā€ by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. ā€œRight now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,ā€ the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

ā€œAny adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,ā€ CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Mooreā€™s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimoreā€™s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spanned the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

Passenger presumed dead after falling off cruise ship in North Sea after saying he felt seasick

A tourist fell off a cruise ship in the North Sea and is presumed dead ā€“ after sending his wife a heartbreaking last text saying he felt seasick, according to reports.

Liam Jones, 23, vanished from the MSC Euribia on March 16 during a seven-day cruise around Europe starting from Southampton in England while celebrating his motherā€™s birthday with his family, according to the Telegraph.

The Scottish social work student was last seen onboard by his sister after he texted his wife, Sophia Mcphee, at home that he was feeling seasick, according to the outlet.

ā€œI feel so lost. Heā€™s just ā€¦ gone,ā€ the 20-year-old wife told the Daily Record . ā€œIā€™m never going to see him again. Iā€™m devastated. I have so many questions, and Iā€™m not getting any answers to whatā€™s happened.ā€

Mcphee said she last saw her husband on March 14 when he traveled from their home to Glasgow to meet his family and board the ship the following day.

The Euribia embarked on a cruise to Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands before heading back to the UK on Friday.

Jonesā€™ heartbroken wife said she was first contacted about his disappearance by his sister.

ā€œShe said there had been an accident and Liam wasnā€™t coming back,ā€ Mcphee told the Record. ā€œShe then said she had seen CCTV and heā€™d gone overboard.

ā€œIā€™ve not had any contact from anyone since. Iā€™ve been trying to get in contact with the MSC since Monday but itā€™s been a headache. Theyā€™re not getting back to me,ā€ she added.

An MSC Cruises rep told the outlet: ā€‹ā€A passenger on board MSC Euribia went overboard on 16 March as the ship was sailing to Hamburg. This was reported to the authorities.

ā€œThe police in Southampton boarded the vessel today and investigated on behalf of the coroner. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.

ā€œOut of respect for the familyā€™s privacy, we will refrain from disclosing any additional information,ā€ the spokesperson added.

A representative for the UKā€™s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was ā€œsupporting the family of a British national following an incident in the Netherlands and are in contact with the local authorities.ā€

Paula Devlin, Jonesā€™ sister, remembered him fondly as ā€œthe purest soul and best friend a sister could ask for,ā€ Dublin Live reported .

The 1,085-foot-long Euribia can accommodate 6,327 passengers, according to the companyā€™s website. The price of the seven-night Northern Europe tour starts at $950 per person.

Iona Itineraries

Iona review, review of iona.

The 2020-built/2021-inaugurated MS Iona cruise ship is P&O UK fleet's first Excellence-class boat (delivered in October 2020 and inaugurated in August 2021), with sistership Arvia (2022). P&O Iona and Arvia are currently the newest and largest passenger liners designed and built for the UK source market.

Other Helios-Excellence-Class vessels (Iona sisterships) include Carnival Mardi Gras (2021), Carnival Celebration (2022), Carnival Jubilee (2023), Costa Smeralda (2019), Costa Toscana (2021), AIDAnova (2018), AIDAcosma (2021).

The vessel (IMO number 9826548) is currently UK- flagged (MMSI 232025845) and registered in Southampton .

History - construction and ownership

P&O Cruises is a subsidiary company and two brands owned by Carnival Corporation - P&O UK and P&O Australia. In 2000, P&O Cruises became subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises, which in 2003 merged with Carnival Corporation. P and O is the world's oldest cruise company, starting passenger shipping operations in 1822 on the routes connecting England with Iberia.

MS Iona cruise ship (P&O Cruises UK)

P&O Iona and Arvia ships are from the Carnival Corporation's Excellence Class (aka "Helios", and "Carnival XL"). The vessel design was developed in collaboration with renowned maritime companies and interior design firms, including Meyer Werft (German shipbuilder), Jestico+Whiles ( London -based hospitality design studio), Richmond International (London-based hotel architecture), Partner Ship Design ( Hamburg -based maritime architecture specialist with several Carnival Corporation projects - including AIDA, Costa, P&O, CCL-Carnival).

For cruise liner's hotel facilities and amenities were contracted the companies Richmond International (London UK), The Four Seasons Moscow, Langham Hotel, and Sandy Lane Hotel (Barbados). Passenger cabins were designed by Partner Ship Design (Hamburg Germany). The ship also introduces the fleet's first "Conservation Mini-Suite" cabin category. The stateroom features a separate, conservatory-style area as a cabin extension. Offering more flexibility, this lounge room is furnished with an L-shaped sofa and can be left open or closed off. The conservatory opens out fully and leads directly onto the suite's balcony. It also can be used for private parties and celebrations with an in-cabin beverage service by a dedicated butler.

Decks and Cabins

MS Iona has 18 decks (16 passenger-accessible, 11 with cabins), a total of 2614 staterooms for 5204 passengers (lower berths/max capacity is 6264) served by 1762 staff-crew, 17 dining venues (11 restaurants plus 6 food bars, including 9 breakfast-serving, 7 coffee-serving, 5 Afternoon Tea-serving, 8 specialty restaurants, 4 MDR-dining rooms), 12 bars and lounges, 4 swimming pools (1 indoor plus 3 outdoor/2 infinity), 18 outdoor Jacuzzies (large outdoor whirlpool hot tubs), 13 entertainment venues (including adults-only), kids-dedicated zones (indoor-outdoor facilities and sundecks/playgrounds), 22 elevators (passenger lifts located forward-midship-aft).

The boat has 8 laundrettes (self-service laundry rooms for passengers). The largest passenger accommodations are the 2-Room Sky Suites (400 ft2 / 37 m2 plus 110 ft2 / 11 m2 terrace/step-out balcony). Staterooms include 121 Suites, 1496 Balcony, 174 Oceanviews/Seaviews, 819 Interior. P&O Iona has a total of 32 studios (single-occupancy cabins) and 55 wheelchair-accessible/handicap cabins (for disabled passengers).

Most cabins are sized between 135-170 ft2 (13-16 m2). Excepting the Suites, all cabin balconies are very small - sized just 20 ft2 (2 m2).

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

With a choice of 30 venues, many of which open from early morning until late at night, guests enjoy the widest ever selection of spots to eat and drink onboard a ship built exclusively for the British cruise market. The new venues join P&O Cruises favorites, such as The Glass House, Epicurean, Sindhu and Brodie's among a long list of cafes, bars, self-service choices, and restaurants. Not traditionally for P&O Cruises, Iona offers exclusively "Freedom Dining" (aka "Flexible Dining") in all main restaurants. The policy allows passengers to choose where, when and with whom they prefer to eat.

MS Iona cruise ship (P&O Cruises UK)

Through the partnership with Salcombe Distilling, P&O Iona ship guests can purchase and even create their own Marabelle Gin (42% ABV/alcohol by volume). The exclusively created for P&O Cruises alcohol is produced on the Iona ship only. For the unique gin recipe are used 18 herbs - including Iona Island's heather (calluna vulgaris), mint, citrus, blackberry, green apple, rose petals, kelp (seaweed). Since MS Iona's inauguration, Marabelle Gin (trademarked brand) is also available fleetwide - served across P&O UK's fleet. The produced on the cruise ship gin is bottled and labeled, with bottles available for purchase.

Via partnership with three celebrity chefs (Marte Marie Forsberg, Jose Pizarro, Kjartan Skjelde), P&O UK upgraded Iona ship's dining to offer the fleet's most diverse culinary experience. Chef Forsberg designed the menu of "Taste 360" (street-food-style dining) and MDR's (dining room's) Norwegian-inspired dishes. On itineraries to Iberia (Portugal, Spain) and the Canaries, tapas dishes-based menus are specially created by Chef Pizarro for the restaurants "The Glass House" and "Taste 360". On Norwegian Fjords itineraries, the menus are upgraded by chefs Skjelde and Forsberg. Skjelde developed a special 6-course Norwegian food tasting menu for "The Epicurean" restaurant.

Itineraries

P&O Iona ship's itinerary program was originally planned to be based on 7-day Baltic (Northern Europe and Norwegian Fjords) cruises roundtrip from homeport Southampton (England) and visiting in Norway ports Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt (or Alesund), Geiranger, Bergen. P&O's Norway Fjords cruise excursions offer experiences like sea kayaking, river rafting, zip-lining, fishing (crayfish), high-speed boat tours (RIB), helicopter and seaplane tours.

MS Iona's inaugural season was planned to start on May 14, 2020 (Maiden Voyage) with only no-fly cruise itineraries roundtrip from the UK (Southampton). Bookings for the new liner were opened on September 7, 2018. However, due to the ongoing COVID-related travel restrictions, in mid-September 2020 P&O UK canceled all scheduled voyages (fleetwide) through early-February 2021 (Caribbean fly-cruises) and through mid-March 2021 (ex-UK cruises). As for the canceled 2020-2021 winter season (October through March), the liner was rescheduled (2021) with Southampton roundtrips to Iberia (Spain-Portugal), Canary Islands and Northern Europe.

In February 2021 P&O UK canceled more summer departures. In early-March were announced major itinerary program changes with only Britain Coastal mini-cruises and 7-day roundtrips from Southampton. MS Iona's Inaugural Cruise was rescheduled for September 25 (14-day to Iberia/"Spain And Portugal"). The new ship's entire Norwegian Fjords 2021 program was canceled.

Iona ship's Maiden Voyage was eventually rescheduled for August 7, 2021 (7-night "British Isles"/ Cruise to Nowhere itinerary roundtrip from Southampton, booking code G126N) and priced from GBP 950 per person (~EUR 1100 pp / ~USD 1320 pp). The portless itinerary featured scenic cruising along Cornwall's coast, anchoring off Isle of Iona (for a fireworks show on the island), three days of Scottish coastal cruising - the islands Colonsay , Mull (Lochbuie, Duart Castle, Tobermory), Bac Mor, Staffa (Fingal's Cave), Jura , Islay (Claggain Bay), Kintyre Peninsula (Mull of Kintyre), Sanda Island .

Iona's cruise itineraries are 7-day and 14-day in length and include extended port stays (with late-night departures) that allow travelers to sample the local nightlife. The list of visited countries and call ports include Portugal ( Lisbon , Funchal-Madeira ), Spain ( Cadiz , Alicante , Barcelona , Malaga , Valencia , Vigo ), Gibraltar , Canaries ( Fuerteventura , Tenerife , Gran Canaria , Lanzarote ), Holland ( Rotterdam -Amsterdam), Belgium ( Zeebrugge ), Germany ( Hamburg ).

On April 25, 2018, at Meyer Werft's Papenburg Shipyard was held the steel-cutting ceremony (hull S-715), which officially started the vessel's construction (Meyer Werft's 50th cruise liner). On February 22, 2021, started the construction of the sistership Arvia (2022).

In January 2018, the shipbuilder contracted ALMACO Group (1998-founded, Finland-based company) to provide catering solutions for the newbuild. The deal included turnkey deliveries and installation of cold- and freezer rooms (total area ~1900 m2 / 20450 ft2).

Arvia and Iona are P&O UK's largest vessels ever constructed - with GT tonnage 180,000 tons and max passenger capacity 6600 (plus 1800 crew). They are also the biggest UK-based passenger ships (permanently homeported in Southampton England ) and the UK cruise market's first LNG-powered newbuild (followed by Arvia). These liners have Wartsila LNG engines that provide electricity for the propulsion system both in ports and at sea.

Like most large -sized newbuilds , the P&O ship Iona is LNG-powered , with 4x engines generating combined output 61,7 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters with combined power output 74 MW. The vessel has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft), and gas capacity 520 m3.

P&O Cruises revealed the "Iona" name for the new build on May 24, 2018, naming it after Iona Island (Inner Hebrides) located off Scotland's coast. The name also keeps the tradition all boats in the P&O UK fleet to have names ending with "A". The ship name was chosen via an online contest with received over 30,000 submissions.

The vessel's keel-laying ceremony was held on June 14, 2019. During this traditional event, under the keel (first hull block, where the bow thrusters are mounted) was placed a bronze coin (from Isle of Iona's Abbey) and a slice of green marble (also from the island). Then a 600-ton gantry crane lowered the steel block. This block (#18) is part of the bow section and has weight 461 tons, length 21,5 m, width 19,4 m, height 9,8 m. The "coin ceremony" was attended by Paul Ludlow (P&O Cruises UK's President), Stephan Schmees (Meyer Werft's Executive Board Member / Project Management) and Jurgen Storz (Meyer Werft's Project Leader). Like on all new passenger liners , Iona's construction blocks (hull and superstructure) are pre-fabricated then floated out to the shipyard for assembling.

On August 2 (2019) the vessel received its iconic SkyDome. The 970-m2 (10440-ft2) glass roof cover consists of 340 pieces and weighs 105 tons. For its mounting was used a 750-ton mobile crane (Liebherr LTM1750-9.1).

The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on February 14, 2020. Its Ems River conveyance (Papenburg Shipyard to Eemshaven Holland ) was conducted on March 18-19. Followed the sea trials in the North Sea (Baltic Sea) for testing the vessel's machinery and nautical equipment.

MS Iona was officially delivered to P&O UK on October 9, 2020, in Papenburg. The documents were signed by Paul Ludlow (P&O's President) and Jan Meyer (Meyer Werft's Managing Director).

P&O Iona (Papenburg shipyard/hull number 710) is powered by MAK-Caterpillar LNG marine engines generating total power output 61,7 MW.

Next is the P&O UK's timelapse video of the cruise ship's construction.

In late-April 2021 P&O UK announced the name of MS Iona's godmother - Dame Irene Lucas-Hays (1954-born British businesswoman). "Dame" (a title equivalent to lady) signifies that she was DBE-rewarded ("Most Excellent Order of the British Empire"/order of chivalry/knighthood). Irene Lucas is the current Owner and Chairwoman of Hays Travel Ltd (1980-founded by John Hays, Sunderland England-based travel agency group) - the UK's largest independent travel agent with ~1500 employees and ~GBP 1 billion in annual sales.

  • In October 2019, Hays Travel Ltd purchased all Thomas Cook Group's stores in the UK, which were to be closed after Thomas Cook entered liquidation in September. With this deal, Hays Travel took over Thomas Cook's 550 retail stores, almost trebling the number of its existing shops across the UK and doubling its workforce.
  • In September 2020, Hays Travel Ltd acquired Tailor Made Travel (Wales-based travel agency chain).

The boat's christening ceremony was on May 16th, held in Port Southampton . The pier-side event was led by Jo Whiley (Joanne Whiley-Morton/1965-born DJ and TV presenter). It was broadcasted live and included a short performance by Gary Barlow (1971-born English singer, songwriter, actor, TV personality). Traditionally, to bring the ship good fortune, Dame Irene Hays smashed against the hull a large bottle of Alex James Blur (cask-strength apple and pear cider/distilled spirit).

For the Maiden Voyage (August 7, 2021), P&O planned several special events, including a fireworks show (from Isle of Iona) and onboard e ntertainment featuring live performances by Tony Hadley, aerial shows (designed by Creativiva Inc, Canada), cooking masterclass (by celebrity chefs Marco Pierre White and Olly Smith, also creating a unique Chef’s Table menu), special dining menus (smoked salmon, regional cheeses, Cranachan/Scottish dessert with whisky).

Ship christening cruise "Ionafest 2020" (CANCELLED)

The vessel's naming ceremony was initially scheduled for July 4, 2020 (Southampton) and planned as part of the themed "Ionafest cruise" (itinerary July 4-11) starting with the pierside naming event. Prices for the special voyage started from GBP 1300 pp (double-occupancy Inside cabin rates). However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, this special voyage was cancelled.

  • Ionafest was based on numerous pre-scheduled onboard events (taking place simultaneously and at different locations/venues) including live performances (music and entertainment) and street festival-like celebrations - all on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • The Southampton-roundtrip itinerary (Norwegian Fjords) was planned to visit Olden , scenic cruising (Innvikfjorden, Nordfjord), Hellesylt , Geiranger , scenic cruising (Geirangerfjord, Sunnylvsfjorden, Storfjorden) and Bergen .
  • Among the confirmed British performers acting live on the liner during the Ionafest Cruise were Clean Bandit (electronic music band), MBE (Trevor Ricardo Nelson / DJ), Jo Whiley (Johanne Morton Whiley / radio DJ and TV presenter), Chris Ramsey (stand-up comedian and actor), Sara Cox (Sara Joanne Cyzer, DJ, radio broadcaster and model), Alex James (Steven Alexander James, DJ, musician and songwriter).

In February 2021 P&O UK cancelled more summer departures. In early-March 2021 were announced major itinerary program changes with only Britain coastal mini-cruises and 7-day roundtrips from Southampton. MS Iona's Inaugural Cruise was rescheduled for September 25 (14-day to Iberia/"Spain And Portugal").

The new ship's entire Norwegian Fjords 2021 program was cancelled.

MS Iona's inaugural season was planned to start on May 14, 2020 (maiden voyage) and included only no-fly cruise itineraries roundtrip from the UK.

P&O Iona's maiden voyage was rescheduled first for October 24, 2020 (7-night Western Europe), later for March 6, 2021 (14-night "Spain and Portugal"), April 24 (7-night Norwegian Fjords), and finally for August 7 (7-night "British Isles"/ Cruise to Nowhere ).

Next tables show the ship's inaugural voyages by destination. All itineraries are roundtrips from homeport Southampton England.
