New Zealand Tours & Holidays

Hiker walking toward Mount Cook in the late afternoon sun, Hooker Valley, New Zealand

People love to throw around the phrase ‘natural beauty’. Then they go to New Zealand.

The ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’ – it’s a classic Kiwi understatement if there ever was one. Most travellers are drawn to New Zealand for those epic experiences out in nature – the open spaces, the dusted peaks, the lakes that pop with blue and make a mockery of Instagram filters – that stuff is just the tip of the glacier. From the feather-clad harbingers of Maoritanga to the happening backstreets of  Wellington  and Dunedin to the natural beauty of  Milford Sound , this country jumps with vitality in more ways than merely geological. Come for the  epic trails  and bubbling geysers, and stay for the friendliest folk in the southern hemisphere.

Best time to visit new zealand.

The most pleasant time for travelling throughout New Zealand is summer (December to February); however, this is also the busiest period, especially during school holidays (late December to late January).

Winter can get very cold with frequent snowfall - but this is the perfect time to travel if you’re looking to ski or snowboard, particularly in the South Island.

Culture and customs

Modern New Zealand is home to a diverse blend of people from far and wide. Maori, Pacific Islander, European and Asian influences blend peacefully to create a vibrant culture. Known for being friendly, down-to-earth, laidback and open, most visitors will find New Zealanders from all ethnicities to be helpful, approachable, generous and up for a laugh.

Maori culture has its origins in Polynesia so some aspects of Maori language, customs and traditions are quite similar to those of neighbouring islands. With strong traditional values based on respect for the family, ancestors and the land, Maori culture is hierarchical and steeped in centuries of tradition. Maori families typically come together for special occasions, celebrations and ceremonies filled with sacred dance, spiritual song and traditional food.

Visitors will see traditional Maori art and carving almost everywhere they go in New Zealand, from elaborate tattooing to carved necklaces. Although Maori culture experienced a decline after the arrival of European settlers, it experienced a renaissance of sorts in the 1960s, which continues to grow today.

Eating and drinking

With award-winning wineries, quality craft-beer bars, a world-class restaurant scene and a multitude of farmers' markets, eating in New Zealand is a real treat. Its Pacific location gives it an interesting mix of flavours, as European influences mesh with Asian and Polynesian.

When it comes to food – or kai , in the Maori language – there’s nothing quite like tucking into a traditional hangi dinner. It’s a hearty repast, fit for a warrior, cooked underground on heated rocks. Today’s hangi feast most often comprises slow-roasted meats, potatoes and stuffing, though there are many variations.

At the other end of the spectrum, there’s the seafood. The locals are spoilt for choice on this front – being an island nation definitely has its advantages. Fresh prawns, lobster, mussels and oysters are in abundance all year round, but fish and chips on the beach can be just as satisfying, especially for those on a budget.

Must-try food and drink in New Zealand

1. Wine & craft beer

Producing a huge variety of top quality wines (many more than just the famous Sauvignon Blancs), New Zealand is full of vineyards and cellar doors to visit. Microbreweries are well represented too; the Kiwis more than pull their weight in the global small-batch craft beer movement, especially in Wellington.

2. Crayfish

There are plenty of places to try crayfish, but Kaikoura, near the top of the South Island, is the best. This sperm-whale-watching capital of the world was in fact named after the crayfish (Kaikoura translates to ‘eat crayfish’ in Maori), and there’s a slew of places along the beach to sample the day’s fresh catch.

With sheep playing a huge part in New Zealand’s agricultural economy, it’s no wonder succulent lamb can be found in most restaurants. If you’re a meat lover, don’t leave New Zealand without tasting the lamb (if you’re indulging in a hangi feast, chances are you will).

4. Kiwis, Feijoas & Tamarillos

Though none of them actually originated in New Zealand (Kiwis came from China; Feijoas and Tamarillos came from South America), these fruits have become synonymous with New Zealand and are all fairly major exports. While kiwi fruit is well known to most of us, it’s the feijoas and tamarillos you should take advantage of while in New Zealand. Abundant, versatile and an acquired taste, they pop up everywhere from roadside stalls to front-garden giveaways to gourmet cafe dishes.

Even though the creator of this desert is hotly contested by their trans-Tasman cousins, the pavlova – a dessert with a meringue-like base and topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit - was the invention of a Wellington chef to honour Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova's tour of Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. It’s a must-try for the sweet tooths.

Top 10 wine regions of New Zealand

1. marlborough.

New Zealand’s wine capital produces top quality chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot gris but it’s the sauvignon blanc that has achieved cult status around the world. Also producing first-class seafood and olive oil, Marlborough is a fave with foodies and wine lovers.

2. Canterbury

With the ideal climate for grape growing, Canterbury produces many internationally acclaimed wine varieties, including pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay and Riesling. Pegasus Bay Winery is one of the most popular in this area, and with a restaurant attached to the winery visitors can indulge in the complete culinary experience.

3. Bay of Plenty

This picturesque area may be well known for its pristine beaches, but it’s also got a few small wineries well worth visiting. Surrounding berry farms, orchards and lavender fields add to the charm.

4. Auckland

There are many boutique wineries creating note-worthy drops in and around Auckland. Kumeu, Henderson and Waiheke Island are hotspots for wine tourism – with awarded wines coming from many small, up-and-coming estates.

5. Central Otago

Spectacular mountain ranges, azure lakes and rolling rivers combine to create one of the world's most scenic wine regions. The vineyards of Central Otago produce a wide range of grapes, but the pinot noir is considered the best.

6. Northland

Way up north, the vineyards populating the historic Northland area produce a wide range of reds and whites. From iconic chardonnay to the more complex chambourcin and exotic syrah, there are loads of cellar doors waiting to welcome you.

7. Hawke’s Bay

New Zealand’s oldest wine growing region also produces most of New Zealand’s most sustainable wines. This commitment to sustainability in the industry has garnered worldwide attention, as has its bold, full-bodied reds. The Art Deco town of Napier is well worth a visit too.

8. Gisborne

If you like your wines a little fruity then the Gisborne region will impress. Merlot, gewurztraminer, syrah and chardonnay are among the best on offer in this region, which is on the same parallel as Malaga and Melbourne.

Winemaking is considered an art form in cultured Nelson. With many unique producers in the region, it won’t be hard to find some smooth wines to savour. Local delis, cafes, providores and galleries add to the artistic, gastronomic mix.

10. Wairarapa

This relatively small winemaking region is made up of three sub-regions: Martinborough, Masterton and Gladstone. Although only a small amount of New Zealand's wine is produced here, the quality is superb with a great track record in pumping out world-class pinot noir.

7. Come alive to Maoritanga in Rotorua

Geysers erupt on the hour in this hotbed of Maori culture, and the locals are only too eager to share their culture and traditional lands.

With a nice little mix of malls, boutiques, galleries, fresh produce markets, cellar doors and providores, New Zealand has enough variety to keep most keen shoppers happy. Look beyond the tourist shops selling stuffed toys and flags and dig a little deeper to find unique art, locally-made crafts and gourmet goods.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in New Zealand

1. Tasty treats

New Zealand is home to many producers of fine food. Home grown wine, olive oil, honey, jam and avocado oil are among the best picks.

With a huge sheep population, the quality and variety of wool is superb in New Zealand. As well as the classic Merino option, consider buying some gloves or socks made from possum wool – it’s durable, warm and a good environmental choice (the possum population poses a major threat to the endangered Kiwi bird).

3. Art and handicrafts

From ceramic bowls to metal sculptures, woodcarvings to greenstone jewellery, you'll find traditional Maori techniques and influences in many of New Zealand’s art and crafts. Try to find authentic, locally made items rather than imported (and inferior!) goods.

Geography and environment

Sitting in the South Pacific Ocean, this island nation is split in two – comprising two major landmasses surrounded by several smaller islands. And while there are many natural similarities between the two islands, they each have their own geographical and environmental character.

The mountainous South Island is larger, and its scenery unfolds on a grand scale. One of its crown jewels is Mt Cook, which is both the highest peak in the country and one of the most stunning sights. Fiords, glaciers, rugged bush and rocky coast are also major features of the South Island, and the differences between the likes of Franz Josef Glacier and the rugged Catlins Coast show the island’s great diversity.

The North Island, on the other hand, is more volcanic, though it has three times the population of the south. Typical features include bubbling lakes and mud pools, and geysers that erupt regularly (and spectacularly). The North Island is great for a hike or zip-line through untouched virgin native forest, with large national parks and reserves preserving the nation’s heritage bushland and the iconic Kiwi bird.

History and government

Early history.

Maori tribes, descended from Polynesia, lived in New Zealand for centuries before the arrival of Europeans in the 18th century. Relying on fishing, hunting and foraging, these people were able to live off the land and develop a deep connection with the earth as a result of this.

European settlers caused wide-scale disruption and land loss for the Maoris, which resulted in conflict and displacement in the early days of colonisation. The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi officially recognised Maori land ownership, of which the British and Maoris were signatories. This historic agreement is viewed as a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s history and the first important step towards reconciliation between the original inhabitants and settlers.

Recent history

In 1852, New Zealand was granted the right to self-govern and in 1907, independence was granted (although the British monarchy remain as head of state). More recently, New Zealand voted in its first female prime minister in 1997. Jenny Shipley held office for two years, before handing over to another female leader - Helen Clarke, who continued to lead until 2008.

In the last ten years, New Zealand has enjoyed a surge in tourism, partly due to the wealth of wineries, ski fields and nature reserves. The film industry has also been a great champion of New Zealand, with filmmakers enjoying the rugged terrain and relatively cheap costs associated with filming in New Zealand. The Lord of the Rings franchise is probably the most well-known film to be shot in New Zealand and has been largely responsible for putting New Zealand in the international spotlight.

A devastating earthquake hit Christchurch in 2011, resulting in widespread loss of life and infrastructure. Although Christchurch is still rebuilding, visitors are encouraged to visit this spirited city.

Festivals and events

With such an interesting cultural landscape – a fiery combo of Maori culture, Pacific rhythms and the European traditions – New Zealand is a place to celebrate. It’s a country that not only excels at celebrating its indigenous cultures, but embraces the contemporary with a playful zest.

New Zealand Festival

Running each February and March, this is the premier Kiwi art and culture event. From theatre to opera, sculpture to painting, cinema to dance, it’s the best overall window to New Zealand’s broad creative palette. And a strong sense of its roots as a nation, with Maori and Pacific cultures well represented.

International Hobbit Day

Whether you’re a die-hard fan is almost beside the point – this up-and-coming festival is worth it for the backdrop alone. Sample local cheese and wine in the rolling hills of Waikato, which takes on an especially magical atmosphere in the lamplight. A tour of The Hobbit movie set will impress the most cynical of disbelievers.

Queenstown Winter Festival

Bringing in each powdery winter since 1975, the Queenstown Winter Festival usually takes place over a weekend in June. With comedy, food, music and – would you believe it in Queenstown? – adventure sports aplenty, it’s well worth planning your South Island visit around this one. The Monteith’s Dog Derby and Dog Barking Competition is something of an institution.

Who are the First Nations people of New Zealand?

"The trip was well laid out. Tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The only complaint is some of our travel documents that were sent out were not in English. If your sending documents out correspondence should be in both the native language and the language of the people the correspondence to. Other than that a great first time experience."

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

"Sad to see a once good tour company stumble and fall into mediocrity. That’s Tauck post-Covid. My May 2023 tour of Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley was done on the cheap by Tauck, yet cost me thousands of dollars extra as a solo traveler on a special small-group tour.

5-star hotels switched to 3 and 4 (without any compensation or explanation)… many more meals “on your own”… lots of “self-guided” tours of museums and chateaux and castles we knew nothing about… airline quality “rubber chicken” dinners, not in hotel restaurants, but in sad and isolated business convention spaces… poorly-trained newer Tour Directors (like the one on this tour) with limited experience traveling outside her tiny Canadian village or dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. She even confessed that this was a second gig job that took her away from her own business back home! You get what Tauck pays for, but unfortunately, not what YOU pay for.

Speaking to a “Guest Relations” agent was comically pointless. She tried to make everything my fault, which I now understand is par for the course with the “new” post-Covid Tauck. Please reconsider spending huge amounts of your hard-earned money on a tour company that has lost its way and no longer delivers."

Melbourne Tour Selection Trips

  • If you're visiting Australia for a short amount of time, a good plan is to use Melbourne as a home base and take several mini trips. Melbourne is centrally located enough for you to be able to experience the wine country, beach scenes, wildlife, and the beautiful Great Ocean Road.
  • Many itineraries that head to Central Australia or Queenland will bookend the tour with either Sydney or Melbourne. They should allow at least 2 days in Melbourne to get a full appreciation of the city.
  • It's no secret that Australians enjoy a night out. Much as one would advise against trying to keep up with a Scot at the bar, the same goes for Australians. Melbourne has a lively night life, but definitely go at your own pace.

There’s a rivalry between Australia and New Zealand over the true national origins of the dish, but both countries agree it’s a truly delicious dessert.

Seafood is a national specialty throughout New Zealand, but the best place to enjoy a meal of crayfish is Kaikoura, a seaside town on the South Island. Here, you’ll enjoy the freshest catch of the day, and the crayfish is boiled and served with a tangy dipping sauce.

Found in restaurants all over Australia, the parmigiana is one of the most beloved dishes in the country. Fifty injured after pilot ‘lost instrumentation’ on LATAM flight from Sydney to Auckland

The pilot of a flight that plunged suddenly en route from Sydney to Auckland on Monday told passengers he “lost instrumentation”.

The pilot of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner that plunged suddenly en route from Sydney to Auckland on Monday, injuring 50 people, reportedly told passengers after the terrifying incident that his “gauges just blanked out” and he “lost all ability to fly the plane”.

Twelve passengers were hospitalised and dozens injured after a “major incident” on board LATAM flight LA800 caused the plane to dip violently, with ambulances rushing to Auckland Aiport just before 4pm local time.

The Chilean airline said an unspecified “technical problem” caused “strong movement” in the air. Unrestrained passengers were sent flying through the cabin and into the ceiling, with some left covered in blood.

Video from on board showed distressed passengers aiding one another in the aftermath and some holding their heads.

Fifty people were treated at the scene by St John Ambulance and 12 were transported to hospital, officials said.

Passenger Brian Jokat told public broadcaster RNZ the plane “just dropped” about two-thirds of the way through the flight, the NZ Herald reported.

“There was no pre-turbulence, we were just sailing smoothly the whole way,” he said, describing the incident as taking “split seconds”.

“I had just dozed off and I luckily had my seatbelt on, and all of a sudden the plane just dropped. It wasn’t one of those things where you hit turbulence and you drop a few times … we just dropped.”

Mr Jokat said a passenger two seats away who was not wearing his seatbelt flew up into the ceiling where he was suspended before falling back to the floor and breaking his ribs on the armrest.

“I thought I was dreaming,” he said. “I opened my eyes and he was on the roof of the plane on his back, looking down on me. It was like The Exorcist .”

After the plane landed the pilot came to the back, according to Mr Jokat.

“I asked him, ‘What happened?’ and he said to me, ‘I lost my instrumentation briefly and then it just came back all of a sudden,’” he said on RNZ. “I know he felt really bad for everyone.”

In another interview with Stuff.co.nz , Mr Jokat recounted the pilot saying, “My gauges just blanked out, I lost all of my ability to fly the plane.”

Another woman told the NZ Herald on Monday the plane experienced a “quick little drop”. “I used to be a flight attendant and this is the first time I’ve ever … the whole plane just froze,” she said.

Daniel, who was travelling from London, told the NZ Herald he had never experienced anything like that in 15 years of flying. He said passengers were screaming and it was hard to tell if it was red wine or blood splattered through the cabin.

“The plane dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds and around 30 people hit the ceiling hard,” he said. “None of us knew what had happened until after the flight, I was just trying to keep everyone calm. We never heard any announcement from the captain.”

At least one person was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Former Airbus captain James Nixon told Seven’s Sunrise on Tuesday that “pilots around the world are saying it was his bad day, thank God it wasn’t me”.

“This happens once in your career,” he said.

Mr Nixon said it sounded like a “power interruption, maybe a generator failure and the autopilot was on the same side as the generator, if it was number one autopilot, number one generator”.

“There is a huge clunk, the screens go blank and you look at each other and go, ‘Oh my God, what do we do now?’, but luckily the engines are operating and there is another big clunk and then you switch the autopilot over to the other side and it is all sorted,” he said.

“It starts and finishes in about three seconds, but it feels like a year.”

Mr Nixon said the incident would have been so quick “you haven’t even got time to wet yourself”. He added it highlighted the importance of keeping your seatbelt fastened in-flight.

“That is rule number one,” he said.

“Don’t they listen to those words we say at the end of every PA? Leave your seatbelts securely fastened like we do on the flight deck, because this can happen, it takes about three seconds, and you look at each other and say, ‘Wow, that was fun’, and then the cabin crew ring you up and tell you you have injuries down the back.”

A spokesperson for the airline said “a technical event during the flight” had “caused a strong movement”.

“The plane landed at Auckland Airport as scheduled,” the airline said.

“LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers, and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards.”

Gerard Campbell of St John Ambulance said medics were first made aware of the problem as the plane descended into New Zealand’s largest city.

A phalanx of more than a dozen ambulances and other medical vehicles rushed to the scene to treat the wounded.

“Our ambulance crews assessed and treated approximately 50 patients, with one patient in a serious condition and the remainder in a moderate to minor condition,” Mr Campbell said.

“Twelve patients were transported to hospital,” he said, after earlier putting the number at 13.

At least three of those treated were cabin crew.

Passengers from Brazil, France, Australia, Chile and New Zealand were taken to hospital.

Data from airline tracker FlightAware showed the plane lost altitude about two hours into the three-hour flight while over the Tasman Sea.

US manufacturer Boeing has suffered a series of safety issues in recent years, including the fatal Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes of 737 MAX planes in 2018 and 2019 that killed more than 350 people.

“We are working to gather more information about the flight and will provide any support needed by our customer,” Boeing said in a statement sent to AFP.

Boeing is still reeling from a near-catastrophic incident in January when a fuselage panel on a Boeing 737 MAX 9 Alaska Airlines jet blew off mid-flight.

US regulators earlier this month gave Boeing 90 days to come up with a plan addressing quality control issues, with the Federal Aviation Administration chief saying the company must “commit to real and profound improvements”.

Last week a Boeing 777 jetliner bound for Japan had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from San Francisco when a wheel fell off and plunged into an airport parking lot, damaging several cars.

Also last week New Zealand’s Prime Minister was forced to take a commercial flight to Australia for high-level meetings because of a last-minute problem with a New Zealand Defence Force Boeing 757 aircraft.

New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission said it was “aware of [Monday’s] reported incident” and was “gathering further information to inform a decision as to whether to open an inquiry”.

According to a statement from the Chilean General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC), New Zealand will take the lead on investigation of the incident, while the DGAC plans to send its own representative to participate as well.

50 people injured by 'strong movement' on Boeing plane flying from Australia to New Zealand

50 injured after 'technical event' on boeing plane.

At least 50 people were injured Monday after a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner "dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds" during a flight to New Zealand, causing passengers to slam into the roof of the cabin, witnesses say. FOX's Alex Hogan joined LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow with the details.

At least 50 people were injured Monday after a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner "dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds" during a flight to New Zealand, causing passengers to slam into the roof of the cabin, witnesses say.

LATAM Airlines says the plane traveling from Sydney, Australia, experienced "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement." Paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles were waiting for passengers when flight LA800 landed in Auckland.

"The plane dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds and around 30 people hit the ceiling hard," said Daniel, one passenger onboard the aircraft, according to the New Zealand Herald.

"None of us knew what had happened until after the flight, I was just trying to keep everyone calm," he added. "We never heard any announcement from the captain."

DOJ OPENS PROBE INTO ALASKA AIRLINES PLANE BLOWOUT: REPORT

The newspaper reports that the incident happened with about an hour left into the flight.

"I had just dozed off and I luckily had my seatbelt on, and all of a sudden the plane just dropped," passenger Brian Jokat also told broadcaster RNZ. "It wasn’t one of those things where you hit turbulence and you drop a few times ... we just dropped."

Jokat said one passenger two seats away from him wasn’t wearing his seatbelt when the drop happened.

"I thought I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and he was on the roof of the plane on his back, looking down on me. It was like The Exorcist," he said.

Jokat also told RNZ that the incident occurred in seconds.

"I felt the plane take a nosedive – it felt like it was at the top of a rollercoaster, and then it flattened out again," he reportedly added, noting that people onboard and the flight crew tended to the injured until the plane landed.

FAMILY OF INDIANA MOM WHO DIED ON AA PLANE REMAIN WITH UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

About 50 people were treated at the scene for mostly mild injuries while 13 of them were transported to a hospital, an ambulance spokesperson told the Associated Press. One patient who was on the flight was reportedly in serious condition.

NTSB: bolts on Boeing Jetliner were 'missing'

Investigators say bolts that helped secure a panel to the frame of a Boeing 737 Max 9 were missing prior to when a panel blew off an Alaska Airlines plane. Pilots were then forces to make an emergency landing with a hole in the plane.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner's final destination was Santiago, Chile, but was landing at Auckland Airport in accordance with its normal flight path, according to Reuters. The flight to Santiago on Monday has been canceled and rescheduled for Tuesday, with the airline providing food and accommodation to travelers affected, according to RNZ.

"LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers, and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said.

Jokat told RNZ the pilot of the plane came to the back of the cabin after landing in Auckland.

"I asked him ‘what happened?’ and he said to me, ‘I lost my instrumentation briefly and then it just came back all of a sudden,’" Jokat said.

The incident is the latest mishap involving a Boeing plane.

In January, a door plug blew off Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 – a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft – causing the cabin to depressurize and forcing it to make an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon. The Justice Department reportedly is opening an investigation into that incident.

Last week, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 departing San Francisco lost a wheel during takeoff. The tire fell and proceeded to damage a few parked cars at the airport.

The next day, a Boeing 737 skidded off the runway after landing in Houston, Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating an incident in February in which a Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by United Airlines "experienced ‘stuck’ rudder pedals during the landing rollout at Newark Liberty International Airport" in New Jersey.

Match Report:

Boland powers Vics in must-win Shield clash with WA

11boland-main-16x9

Scott Boland has made an immediate impact on his return from Australia's tour of New Zealand with four crucial wickets for Victoria against WA

Victoria v Western Australia | Sheffield Shield | Day 1

Star quick Scott Boland has returned from New Zealand to help Victoria claim an early advantage in their must-win Marsh Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia.

The 34-year-old was an invaluable inclusion for the Vics after being released from Australia's Test squad having been deemed surplus to requirements for the 2-0 series victory over the Black Caps.

Boland toiled away in hot conditions on Monday to take 4-41, helping bowl WA out for 244 after Victoria captain Will Sutherland won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.

Sutherland's decision was looking questionable when WA moved to 4-203.

Boland delivers with four wickets on day one of crunch clash

But Boland, Fergus O'Neill (3-48) and spinner Todd Murphy (2-54) helped trigger a collapse of 6-41.

"I would have liked to have stayed over in New Zealand if I was playing, but there was an opportunity to play back here," Boland said.

"I've spent so much time carrying the drinks this year so it's been nice to be back on the field.

"Credit to our whole bowling group, we stuck to our plans that we wanted to implement to their batters."

Most of the WA top-order got starts, but Jayden Goodwin finished top scorer with 43.

Boland's beauty castles Goodwin to end patient knock

Allrounders Aaron Hardie (40) and Hilton Cartwright (31) battled hard during their knocks but never looked entirely comfortable.

Victoria had to face five overs before stumps, losing in-form opener Nic Maddinson to Cameron Gannon for two.

Marcus Harris, unbeaten on four, will resume on Tuesday with Mitch Perry (0no), who came out as the nightwatchman.

Former Test batter Peter Handscomb is due to come in at No.5 in his 100th Shield match.

Dual reigning champions Western Australia need to avoid losing to the Vics to be assured of reaching a third successive decider.

Sitting second on the table, the visitors can still make the final with a draw.

But Victoria – one place lower on the ladder – will be pushing hard to force a result after losing the last two finals against WA.

Tasmania, who last won a Shield title in 2012-13, are in the box seat to host the final after losing just once this season.
