Best Rocket Espresso Machine (All 7 Machines Reviewed)

 Last Updated November 28, 2023

Rocket is well known for making premium coffee machines. The issue is that they have a big range of products.  So how do you know what's the best Rocket espresso machine for you?

In this guide I'll be using my 10 years of barista knowledge and personal experience with Rocket espresso machines to compare their range and give my opinion on what's the best Rocket coffee machine for particular people.

Rocket espresso machine

My Rocket Appartamento, freshly unboxed.

We'll start off by recommending my top three picks, before comparing the whole range and having a more detailed look at each machine.  I've made suggestions on who each machine is suited for, and what machine is worth spending a little bit more money for.

Entry level / compact

Rocket Appartamento

If you're just starting out in your coffee making journey, or have limited counter space in your kitchen, then the Appartamento is the best choice for you.

This is the machine I use at home myself and is the perfect machine if you are low on kitchen space. The Appartamento is ideal for the person looking to upgrade from consumer grade espresso machines and enter the world of prosumer coffee makers. It's a heat-exchange coffee machine that steams milk fast, is well built, and looks great.

Rocket R58 Espresso Machine

Best overall

This machine is the "end game" machine for most people. It has pretty much everything a coffee geek will need to make great coffee at home.

The R58 is a dual boiler espresso machine that has everything that the vast majority of coffee geeks need to keep them satisfied. With one boiler for steam and one for extraction, you can set the exact temperature of the extraction boiler with a PID control to get the most out of light and dark roast coffee beans. This is the key difference between the Appartamento above that only has one boiler while the R58 has two. On top of this it comes with a rotary pump that keeps it quite and allows you to plumb it in directly into your water main so there is no need to refill the water tank.

Rocket R Nine One

This is the ultimate home coffee machine for the coffee geek that wants to control every element of the coffee making process. Everything is Programmable!

The Rocket R Nine is the luxury option. It has everything the R58 has and more. The key difference is that it uses a saturated group head rather than the old E61 design for better temperature stability, and it also comes with manual and programmable flow control with pre and post infusion settings. Flow control is possible thanks to its variable speed magnetic gear pump that allows you to control your extraction speed for better pressure profiling. With this machine you can program flow and extraction settings to replicate your results for the best tasting coffee for certain coffee blends. This is the machine for the coffee geek that wants it all.

It's the perfect first upgrade from consumer machines.

I've written a very detailed review of the Appartamento here , but in summary I recommend this machine for any person looking for their first upgrade.

Apparatamento coffee machine at home

My rocket espresso machine at home.

There are some limitations to the machine, such as no brew pressure gauge, shot clock, or PID controls, but if you enjoy the manual nature of making coffee, then this machine could be for you. But if these are deal breakers, then you should consider some of Rockets other options below.

Rocket Giotto Type V

Great retro design

2. Giotto Type V

Retro design

Shot clock: Yes

Size:  13.2 x 16.5 x 14.75 (WxDxH inches)

The Rocket Espresso Giotto Type V is a true gem for coffee lovers Its polished stainless-steel body is not only eye-catching, but it also houses impressive features. With the PID temperature controller and built-in shot timer, this machine guarantees precision and consistency in every espresso shot. And unlike the Aparatamento above, it also has a brew pressure gauge.

For milk-based beverage lovers, the heat-exchange boiler system and no-burn steam wand create silky-smooth piccolo lattes and cappuccinos with ease. The E-61 commercial grouphead adds to the experience, offering thermal stability.

In summary, the Rocket Espresso Giotto Type V is a fantastic option for the person who is looking for a good looking espresso machine, and is willing to spend a little bit more to get the features that the Appartamento above lacks.

Rocket Giotto Evoluzione R Espresso Machine

Retro with rotary pump

3. Giotto Evoluzione R

Rotary pump allows to plumb

Boiler: Heat-exchange (Single) Pump: Rotary

Plumable: Yes

Pre-infusion: Yes

Size:  13.2 x 16.5 x 14.75 (WxDxH inches)

The Rocket Espresso Giotto Timer Evoluzione R is pretty much the exact same machine as the Type V above with a couple notable differences.

The main difference is the inclusion of a rotary pump, which allows for quieter operation, easy plumbing, and pre-infusion. Additionally, this model has adjustable feet, making it more adaptable to your kitchen setup.

The rest of the features are the same. It has the same copper heat-exchange boiler system and no-burn steam wand, delivering velvety lattes and cappuccinos. It also comes with the same stainless-steel body that houses the same PID temperature controller and built-in shot timer, ensuring precision and consistency in every espresso shot.

So this machine is all about whether a rotary pump is worth it or not for you.

Mozzafiato V Rocket Coffee Machine

Modern espresso machine

4. Mozzafiato V

Modern design

Great build quality

Size:  11 x 16.75 x 15.75 (WxDxH inches)

The Rocket Espresso Mozzafiato Type V is another fantastic option for home baristas . It shares all the features with the Giotto Type V, such as the PID temperature controller, built-in shot timer, and E-61 commercial grouphead, ensuring precise and consistent espresso shots every time.

The key difference between the Giotto range is that the Mozzafiato stands out with its straight-edged, stainless-steel body, giving it a more modern, streamlined look compared to the curved design of the Giotto machines. Functionality remains top-notch, with a heat-exchange boiler system and no-burn steam wand for many different types of coffee beverages .

While both Giotto and Mozzafiato machines excel in performance and quality, your choice ultimately comes down to design preference. If you're drawn to a sleek, contemporary aesthetic, the Mozzafiato Timer Type V is an excellent addition to your espresso-making arsenal.

Mozzafiato R Coffee Machine

Modern with rotary pump

5. Mozzafiato R

Rotary pump benefits

The Rocket Espresso Mozzafiato Type R Espresso Machine takes the features of the Type V and adds a significant improvement – a rotary pump. This not only allows for quieter operation but also makes the machine plumbable and allows for pre-infusion, adding convenience to your home espresso setup.

Similar to the Type V, the Mozzafiato Type R boasts a sleek, straight-edged stainless-steel body, PID temperature controller, built-in shot timer, and the reliable E-61 commercial grouphead for precision and consistency. The heat-exchange boiler system and no-burn steam wand are also present.

In short, if you are happy to spend a little bit more for a rotary pump get this machine. If you are not fussed about this, save some cash and get the type V.

6. Rocket R58

Dual boilers

Programmable on/off, tempreature

Great design (removable tablet)

Boiler: Dual boiler Pump: Rotary

Programmable: Yes

The Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto is our top pick for the ultimate espresso experience in Rocket's range. This dual-boiler beauty offers precise temperature control and stability, thanks to its separate boilers for brewing and steaming. The removable PID controller with a touchscreen display allows you to fine-tune your settings with ease.

A standout feature is the rotary pump, which provides quiet operation and plumbing compatibility. The R58 also boasts the reliable E-61 commercial grouphead, a no-burn steam wand, and a sleek, polished stainless-steel body. With adjustable feet, you can customize the machine's height to fit your kitchen perfectly.

The Rocket Espresso R58 Cinquantotto is the end game for most coffee enthusiasts, offering all the features a coffee geek desires. It's a premium investment that delivers exceptional espresso shots and milk-based beverages, making it the best overall choice in Rocket's range.

The only thing that this machine lacks is flow control, however since it is a E-61 machine, you can buy an upgrade kit for this feature, which allows you to save money by not needing to upgrade to the Rocket R Nine One below.

Rocket R Nine One Espresso Machine

7. Rocket R Nine One

Manual flow control

Programmable extraction settings

Dual boiler

Saturated group for better temp and faster turn on time

Boiler: Dual boiler Pump: Variable speed magnetic gear pump

Size:  16.25 x 20 x 17 (WxDxH inches)

The Rocket Espresso R Nine One Espresso Machine is the pinnacle of Rocket's line up, offering unparalleled control over every aspect of the coffee-making process. This machine boasts dual boilers for superior temperature control, stability, and simultaneous brewing and steaming.

A key feature is the manual flow control, allowing you to customize the flow rate of water through the coffee puck. It also allows you to program your flow if you don't want to this manually. This is possible thanks to its variable speed magnetic gear pump.  The R Nine One's programmable extractions empower you to create truly personalized coffee profiles. The saturated grouphead and no-burn steam wand deliver consistently excellent espresso and milk-based beverages.

This is the only machine in Rocket's range that offers a saturated group head, that offers quicker start up times and better temperature stability compared to the e-61 design. It is also the only machine with a variable speed magnetic gear pump that allows you to program flow contract. Although you can install a flow mod on E-61 machines, it's difficult to replicate results as you can't program the flow like the R Nine One.

Rocket's most feature-rich and expensive machine, the R Nine One is ideal for those seeking the ultimate control over their espresso craft. If you desire the ability to fine-tune every aspect of the brewing process, this is the perfect machine for you.

Rocket coffee machine feature differences

All Rocket coffee machines share a few core features, such as great stainless steel build quality, cool touch steam wand (so you don't burn yourself), and great design. What affects their price is the additional features. Below I  outline the key features that vary among Rocket espresso machines. The more features a machine has, the more cost is added on. This will help you decide if the extra features of a particular machine is worth the extra price.

The biggest difference in cost between machines is the amount of boilers a machine has: a   single heat exchange boile r vs a dual boiler . The reason for this is simple. Double the boilers, double the cost. But what does a dual boiler give you over a single heat exchange boiler?

Well, the main benefit is that you can control the water temperature of the brew boiler independently from the steam boiler. This allows you to set the temperature to match the type of bean you are extracting.

Light roasted beans benefit from lower extraction temperatures compared to darker roasted beans. So if you are the type of person who wants to extract coffee at exact temperature’s and like lighter roasted coffees, then you may consider spending a little bit more money here. Other than this difference, a heat-exchanger can steam milk and extract espresso at the same time like a dual boiler machine.

There are three types of pumps to choose from: vibration, rotary, and variable magnetic gear pump. Pumps are responsible for bringing the water from the water tank into the boilers and then push the water to the extraction chamber.

Vibration pumps are the cheaper option and vibrate to move the water. The down side of them is that they are loud and make a vibration sound.

Rotary pumps are more expensive. However, have the benefit of being silent. Also, with a rotary pump you can plumb in your machine, and it also allows you to do a proper pre-infusion as there is pressure behind the water. However, the pre-infusion is typically fixed to pump pressure unless you have a flow control mod installed.

The final option for Rocket machines is the variable speed magnetic gear pump. This pump allows you to control the flow control of the extraction with the pump by programming what flow you want, allow for extact pressure profiling. This is high tech and one of the reasons it's the most expensive option.

If you are looking to plumb your coffee machine in or want pre-infusion, you may consider spending a bit more money to get a better pump.

PID is a system that allows you to electronically control the temperature of the water in the boiler. The main benefit of PIDs is that they offer more stable temperature within the boiler, which may affect the taste of the coffee. The alternative of PID is a "pressurestat" that uses boiler pressure to match with temperature. Pressure stats are cheaper and have more temperature swings, but still get the job done. The downside to pressure stats is that you may need to "temperature surf" at times if the machine is left idle by doing a cooling flush. All Rocket espresso machines on this list have PID control except for the Appartamento.

A shot clock is simply a clock that counts from when you start your extraction so you can measure how long your shot takes to make sure you are getting consistent results.

The machines on this list that have a rotary pump are plumbable. This means that you do not need to keep refilling the water tank. However they can still use the water tank if you can't plumb your coffee machine at your home. Plumbable machines are more expensive, so you should consider if you need this feature or not.

Pre-Infusion

Pre-infusion is the ability to soak your coffee puck before fully turning on the pump pressure to extract the espresso. The benefit of this is that the pre-infusion wets the whole puck, so it results in more flavour being extract and reduces the chances of your puck channelling. Rocket machines that have a rotary pump that are plumbable give you this ability as there is a consistent pressure from the water pressure to wet your puck.

Programmable

Programmability allows you to create pre-sets for your extraction, pre-infusion, and temperature extraction. It also allows you to get auto turn on and shut down times for your latte machine . Rocket's more expensive machines have these features, and the rest of the range have more manual controls.

There we have it. We hope this guide has helped you pick the best Rocket espresso machine for you needs and budget. At the end of the day, every one of these machines are well built and beautiful. It is up to you to decide if the extra features are worth the cost. But in summary, our top pick is the Rocket R58 below.

Can you leave a Rocket espresso machine on all day?

Yes you can leave Rocket machines off all day, however longer exposure to the heat wears down the gear faster. So I recommend turning it off when not in use like when you're sleeping. A smart plug can help with this.

Where are Rocket espresso machines made?

Rocket espresso machines are made in Milan , Italy.

How long will Rocket espresso machines last?

Rocket espresso machines can last for decades. Unlike consumer cappuccino machines , prosumer machines like the Rocket are easy to maintain and should a part break they are easily replaceable. So even though they are bit more expensive, they are a worthy investment.

6 Best Rocket Espresso Machine Reviews

With pricing out of the way, we can focus on the pros and cons of these Rocket machines so that you can choose the one within your budget.

1. The Rocket Appartamento Espresso Machine

rocket-appartamento-thumbnail

  • Boiler Type: Heat Exchanger
  • Pump Type: Vibratory Pump
  • Auto On: No
  • Boiler Volume: 1.8L
  • Reservoir Size: 2.5L
  • Water Supply: Water reservoir
  • Dimensions(W,D,H): 10.5 x 17 x 14.25 inches

The Rocket Appartamento espresso machine is the least expensive on our list, but that does not take away the classic features of a prosumer level machine, such as the E61 group head, pre-infusion, heat exchange boiler.

Compacted and clean, the Rocket Appartamento can fit anywhere in your kitchen and look sharp, not cluttered, and its side panels are interchangeable with different color options to match your style. Like all the other espresso machines from Rocket, there’s a stylish ‘R’ logo on the knob of the stainless steel steam wand.

This semi-automatic espresso machine is a mixture of a modern and authentic style with its stainless steel exterior, portraying the perfect machine for espresso makers. The brewing part comes easy with a heat-exchanger, which brews the coffee and steams milk simultaneously to your preference.

You are in total control with its manual settings without overcomplicating it for espresso drinkers like yourself who want their coffee fast.

For the price of this cheaper machine, it all depends on your coffee preferences. While the overall look is clean, their use of plastic in the cup warmer rack can throw off the sleek look.

The Rocket Appartamento uses pressure stat instead of PID to control the temperature, meaning it lacks the control of keeping the temperature consistently like the more expensive models. Nevertheless, this great machine is one of the most popular choices of espresso enthusiasts worldwide. You can find lots of mods and hacks online to perfect the machine yourself.

  • It has a simple, easy operation
  • The most affordable rocket espresso machine
  • It is stylish and offers customizable side panels
  • The drip tray is small
  • Some plastic materials used in the cup warmer rack
  • It does not have PID, and the shot timer

2. Cronometro V

rocket-giotto-v-thumbnail

  • Dimensions(W,D,H): 13.2 x 16.5 x 14.75 inches

rocket-mozzafiato-v-thumbnail

  • Dimensions(W,D,H): 11 x 16.75 x 15.75 inches

The Cronometro V, as previously stated, is separated from its counterpart, the R, by its difference in the pump. The V uses a vibratory pump instead, and how the water distributes during operation. The vibratory pump only gets water from the machine’s reservoir.

The most important thing about this element is that it is much smaller, easier, and cheaper to replace than a rotary pump. The V products consist of two different machine design styles, the Giotto and the Mozzafiato.

So what makes the Giotto and the Mozzafiato different if they perform the same task? The answer lies within their aesthetics. They perform the same way and brew the same coffee.

While both are larger overall than the Appartamento, The Giotto is the classic Italian design, with sloped sides adding flair to your kitchen. It comes with higher adjustable feet at the bottom, and the cup rail can be removed. At the same time, the Mozzafiato is to the point with flat sides and stubbier legs.

They all have the same great features, such as the No Burn steam and hot water wands, the E61 group head, and the PID controller behind the drip tray that allows you to control the temperature inside your boiler. In addition, you have a shot timer, which is not available in Appartamento.

  • It uses a PID for consistent temperature controls
  • The vibration pump is smaller and less expensive to replace than a rotary model
  • It comes in two different styles
  • It has a shot timer
  • The vibration pump is louder than a rotary model
  • Its stainless steel construction retains fingerprints and smudges easier

3. Cronometro R

Rocket espresso mozzafiato timer evoluzione r.

rocket-mozzafiato-r-thumbnail

  • Pump Type: Rotary Pump
  • Water Supply: Water reservoir , Direct Plump
  • Dimensions(W,D,H): 11 x 16.5 x 15.75 inches

Rocket Espresso Giotto Timer Evoluzione R

rocket-giotto-r-thumbnail

While similar to the Cronometro V, the Cronometro R uses a rotary pump, a much quieter and stronger way to retrieve water from your choice of a tank supply or plumb, meaning the pump is connected directly to the waterline.

It is much more efficient this way, for you no longer have to refill a tank with water if it attaches directly to the source and the pressure remains consistent. Rotary pumps also have much longer lifespans than vibratory pumps.

Apart from how water enters the espresso machines, the rest is quite similar. When you see the pressure gauge has a black background, you can tell this is a Type R.

The R contains PID and insulated boilers that save energy and maintain heat, ensuring quality espresso shot after shot. It also offers itself in the Giotto and Mozzafiato styles, the same as they are in the Cronometro V form.

The great news is that both ways, rotary and vibratory, produce excellent espresso, and like the way you take your coffee, it all comes down to preference and personal style. The Cronometro models give you options to choose from, and with this guide, you know which one speaks to you more.

  • The rotary pump is quiet and more efficient
  • The pump is directly connected to a water line to eliminate refilling a reservoir
  • It offers a built-in PID for maintaining temperature
  • The rotary pump is more expensive and challenging to replace
  • The stainless steel panels are not smudge-proof, making continuous cleaning necessary

4.Rocket R58 Cinquantotto

rocket-r58-thumbnail

  • Boiler Type: Dual Boiler
  • PID: Touch Screen PID
  • Boiler Volume: 1.7L / 0.58L
  • Auto On: Yes
  • Dimensions(W,D,H): 17 x 22.75 x 17 inches

Although it grows in size and price, for everything it offers, not so pricey, the Rocket R58 is every coffee lover’s dream espresso machine. With a double broiler for brew and steam, you will feel like an official barista in your own home, capable of brewing more extensive drinks.

Not only does the Rocket R58 have PID, but its touch screen, allows you to adjust the setting to your desired temperature easily. You can also schedule the Auto-on timer, so you don’t need to wait for 20 to 30 minutes to prepare your morning cup. Eco-mode can be activated in the controller.

The machine is not only just simply impressive to look at and makes you feel like you are living in the future as you use it, but each one is hand-built. Care and detail go into these machines, the same way our personalities seep into our coffee, which is only another pro of this machine.

Its rotary pump keeps your coffee consistent, and the double boiler separates brew and steam to keep the heat temperature where it needs to be. You can feel the difference if you use a lot of hot water or make a few drinks at a time. Just turn the steam knob. You can get powerful steam from the steam wand each time.

The Rocket R58 is so spectacular that it is difficult to find the negative aspects. If anything, it is full-size and for experienced coffee makers, so it may be challenging to use in your kitchen if you lack space and are not familiar with the controls.

  • It includes double boilers instead of a heat exchange boiler
  • It offers a touch screen for smooth operation and easy access to all settings
  • It uses a rotary pump, support direct plumb or water reservoir
  • Its full-size can take up significant countertop space in your kitchen
  • The external PID controller takes extra space

5. Rocket R60

rocket-r60v-thumbnail

  • Smartphone Apps Support: Yes
  • Pressure Profiling: Yes
  • Dimensions(W,D,H): 20 x 23 x 16.75 inches

Like the R58, the R60 is one of the more impressive machines in Rocket’s espresso product line. Its main feature is pressure profiling. This element means the R60 can create the perfect espresso shot with three separate profiles and five stages to determine where the machine’s pressure is at. It is also the most high-tech of all the products with controller and smartphone apps.

This Rocket machine is the most impressive, with a rotary pump, PID controller, two pressure gauges, multiple water source options, and all included in a three-year warranty. It is the most expensive espresso machine, but it also consists of many more features the others do not, like its different exterior.

The R60 has an ergonomic casing, which means its stainless steel is on top of steelwork. This machine has futuristic technology and is built to last. There are a few to keep in mind, though. First, the price is incredibly high, and although you get what you pay for, not many people need an espresso machine with so many intense features. It is also full size like the R58, so you should consider the available space in your home. The external controller is even larger than the one on the R58.

It is worth it for coffee lovers who want this amazing experience alongside their perfect cup of coffee and have the budget to do so.

  • It uses a smartphone app
  • It offers pressure profiling for separate settings
  • It contains the most high-tech features and elements
  • It is quite an expensive model
  • The controller is not very intuitive, and the smartphone app design is a bit out of date

Tips for Choosing the Best Rocket Espresso Machine for You

All of the Rocket Espresso Milano Machines are incredible and produce a coffee aesthetic and provide a delicious cup of coffee. However, it all comes down to you and what your needs are. There are a few things to consider before purchasing your Rocket Espresso.

Your budget is entirely up to you. A huge component to consider in choosing your perfect espresso machine is what you can afford, what you are willing to spend, and how much you love your coffee.

Luckily, Rocket Espresso offers an extensive range of great products for all prices, so you receive a sleek stainless steel machine with superb coffee. However, they are all prosumer machines, meaning even the most affordable model still costs much more than an entry-level espresso machine.

The Appartamento is cheaper, smaller, but lacks some advanced settings and features. At the same time, the R58 provides more features that are usually available in commercial-grade machines with better quality and a higher experience, with a higher price. If you are looking for a middle ground, any other Rocket machines fit between these prices.

Boiler Type: Heat Exchange or Dual Boiler

Heat Exchanger machines only have one boiler, so they usually have a lower price than dual boiler machines. You can get enough steam pressure for steaming milk while pulling a shot. However, you need a cooling flush if you let the machine stay idle. The brew temperature is not as stable as the dual boiler.

A dual boiler machine like the R58 is equipped with two standalone boilers. It can keep the brew boiler at a lower temperature and the steam boiler at a higher temperature. This will enhance the shot consistency. Also, with the PID, you can experiment your shot or adjust the steam power for better coffee. Prosumer machines with dual boilers cost more.

Direct Plumbing or Water Tank

Something to consider when buying a Rocket is your water supply.

Using direct plumbing connecting to your house’s waterline is more convenient. But it is attached to the more expensive machines using a rotary pump. It takes zero effort once set up and you have a streamlined coffee brewing experience at home. However, a water tank is straightforward and easier to install since it is refillable and less expensive. It is ultimately up to preference, as always, your choice.

Space is a little less out of your control. While you can create space in your kitchen for a Rocket R60, sometimes other items take priority, but if you have the budget and the room, why not splurge on the priciest machine for the best experience?

Fortunately, a lack of space is no issue, for the Appartamento has a compact size and can most likely fit in a smaller kitchen. Even the Cronometros, R and V, are medium-sized, so they are more likely to squeeze on your countertop than the R60.

The Verdict

Rocket brand offers the finest espresso machines on the market, and you won’t go wrong choosing from them based on your own budget. Considering all of these facts about these Rocket espresso machines, the Rocket R58 is our favorite. Not only is it a great value, but the technology is close to as impressive as the R60 and for a lower price.

It includes a similar touch screen and a set timer, so although you cannot control the machine through an app, you can decide when you want the machine to make coffee to your designated schedule and daily routine.

The R58 provides coffee lovers with a commercial-grade design, creating an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere in your kitchen, somewhat like a coffee shop. The benefits of this espresso machine outweigh the cons here, for the separate boilers for espresso and steam control the temperatures of each and create the perfect espresso.

You will not have to worry about upgrading this espresso machine for some time since it can fulfill many of your caffeine needs.

Best Rocket Espresso Machine – The 5 Top Machines Compared

By: Espressoverse team

Many coffee connoisseurs, cafes and restaurants go straight to Rocket Espresso machines for top quality espresso experience.

It’s no wonder. Rocket machines are some of the best on the market. They offer superb temperature stability, precise pressure regulation, and impeccable espresso texture.

The only problem is that they have lots of models on offer. So how do you pick the best Rocket espresso machine for your specific espresso needs?

In this blog post, I will review and compare five of the top Rocket coffee machines. I will use all my experience to help you pick the perfect one for you. Let’s dive in!

The 5 Best Rocket Espresso Machines

About rocket espresso machine company, choosing the best rocket espresso machine for you, our #1 rocket espresso machine, faqs about rocket espresso machine.

One of the main problems, if I can say it like that, with Rocket espresso machines is that they all look the same. Wouldn’t you agree?

But once you scratch the surface all take a look “under the hood” you’ll see that they actually differ from unit to unit. Some models leverage heat exchange technology to offer temperature stability, while others go a step further with dual boilers.

And that’s not the only difference!

You can learn more about the best Rocket espresso machines from my individual reviews below. You will also find a helpful buying guide in this article!

Rocket R58 – Best Overall

Rocket 58 - Best Overall

  • Boiler: Dual
  • PID control: Yes
  • Pump: Rotary

SCG Logo

External PID controler

Quiet rotary pump

Excellent temp stability

Excellent build quality

Powerful steam pressure

External PID is prone to damage

Large size (may not be suitable for smaller kitchens or apartments)

I personally believe that the Rocket R58 espresso machine is the perfect option for those seeking unparalleled espresso brewing quality and experience. That’s due to its advanced features and superior brewing capabilities.

One of the most notable features of the Rocket R58 is its dual-boiler system. This setup is designed to secure unparalleled control over temperature and helps maintain consistency in every brew.

To offer some customizability, the boiler pressure on R58 can be adjusted. This means that you can profile your espresso using the preferred amount of pressure.

Speaking of the adjustments, the machine also has a PID temperature controller, which is located on the outside of the machine. PID is basically making it easier to fine-tune the temperature for the most exquisite and refined espresso.

The downside of this external setup in my opinion is that you can easily damage the controller and thus add extra expense to your setup. So, be careful!

Another impressive feature is the machine’s rotary pump. The main benefit of a rotary pump is noise-free brewing. It is also well-regarded for its longevity.

The Rocket R58 espresso machine is equipped with a large 2.5-litre water tank. This basically means that you can brew for an extended period without the need for constant refilling.

The machine is also built with a sturdy and long-lasting stainless steel body that can withstand several years of use. The downside is that you will have to clean the stainless steel body frequently.

I was impressed with the steam power of the R58. The dedicated steam boiler, combined with the commercial-grade steam wand, produces powerful steam for making the perfect microform for your lattes and cappuccinos.

While the Rocket R58 is a semi-automatic machine, I find it is relatively user-friendly, especially for those with some espresso-making experience. The intuitive interface make it easy to navigate and adjust settings.

However, I believe that beginners may require some practice to master the art of extracting espresso shots consistently.

Rocket Mozzafiato – Runner Up

Rocket Mozzafiato - Runner Up

  • Boiler: Heat-exchange
  • Pump: Rotary & Vibration

Excellent temp control

Rotary and vibratory pump models are available

Internal PID controler

E61 grouphead

A single boiler HX is not best for frequent milk frothing

The vibratory pump model is louder

May require more frequent descaling and maintenance

If you’re a true espresso lover, then the Rocket Mozzafiato should definitely be on your radar. This premium-grade espresso machine is considered by many to be one of the best on the market.

First and foremost, the Rocket Mozzafiato is a single-boiler (heat exchange) espresso machine with a PID temperature controller. This means that, although it has only one boiler, it can brew and steam simultaneously.

Rocket is the first espresso machine manufacturer who thought of this idea, by the way.

The machine also offers a pre-infusion feature, which saturates the coffee grounds before extraction, further enhancing the flavours and aromas in the final cup.

I personally find the E61 group head to be a standout feature on Mozzafiato. It is made of chrome-plated brass to maximize heat retention. This key aspect helps to maintain a stable temperature throughout the brewing process.

All these pro features are ultimately responsible for making a great espresso. And that is probably one of my favourite features on all Rocket espresso machines.

You should also know that the Mozzafiato comes in two versions, R and V.

The V uses a vibratory pump and comes with a 1.8L water tank. The R version comes with a rotary pump and also has a water tank but it can be plumbed into your water line if you plan to make lots of espresso every day.

The steam wand is a joy to use. The pressure pump has precise control over the steam flow for perfectly textured milk. The only issue is that you can’t steam a lot of milk frequently because the single boiler setup will overheat.

Additionally, the vibratory pump model is relatively loud during operation. So if you are planning to opt-in for Mozzafiato, I would recommend the R type over the V type.

Rocket Appartamento – Best On-Budget

Rocket Appartamento - Best On-Budget

  • PID control: No
  • Pump: Vibration

Compact size and footprint

Eyecatching design

Commercial-grade parts

Simple and intuitive operation

Can brew and steam simultaneously

No built-in shot timers or programmable settings

Limited boiler capacity may be a drawback for heavy use

No PID temperature controller

The Rocket Appartamento has been making waves in the coffee industry for several years now. It is one of the most popular espresso machines that coffee enthusiasts and baristas alike swear by.

I believe that this compact and sleek unit is perfect for home brewing, and it certainly packs a punch with its impressive features.

The Appartamento is equipped with a 1.8-litre heat-exchange boiler, an E61 group head, and a pressure stat instead of the PID. The machine also has a large, chrome-plated brass, and ergonomic 58mm portafilter.

All this combined with your barista skills is capable of producing coffee-shop-quality espressos despite the lack of some advanced features.

For example, this unit doesn’t have already mentioned PID. Also, it is not capable of pre-infusion like R58 for example. It doesn’t have a pressure stat for precise brewing and you can’t program your shots.

However, one of the biggest advantages of the Appartamento is its powerful steam wand. It produces a consistent flow of hot steam. So if you like to make espresso drinks at home, it’s still a great machine.

Another big advantage of this beautiful-looking machine is its price tag. It costs twice as less as R58 or even R Nine One, and yet, it is capable of brewing great espressos.

I would recommend this model if you want a Caffe quality at home but don’t care too much about advanced features and programmability.

Rocket R Nine One – Best Upgrade

Rocket R Nine One - Best Upgrade

  • Boiler: Dual
  • Pump: Rotary

 Precise temperature control

Large water tank and boiler capacity for heavy use

Commercial-grade pump

Pressure profiling abilities

High-quality construction

Programmable settings

The extremely high price point

May be too advanced for some home baristas

Large size and footprint

As an avid coffee enthusiast, I have tried numerous espresso machines over the years, but none have left me as awe-inspiring as the Rocket R Nine One. This espresso machine embodies the perfect blend of craftsmanship, performance, and exceptional quality.

For example, the dual boiler system allows for simultaneous brewing and steaming, ensuring optimal temperature control and minimal waiting time.

Furthermore, the machine offers precise pressure profiling, giving you the ability to experiment with different extraction profiles and extract the best flavours from your coffee beans.

Your ability to fine-tune every aspect of the brewing process allows for a truly personalized coffee experience that caters to your individual preferences.

That said, the R Nine One’s brewing performance is nothing short of exceptional.

With a powerful 1400-watt brew boiler and a dedicated 1200-watt steam boiler, combined with a rotary pump, this machine delivers consistent heat and pressure for perfect extractions.

And as for the steaming capabilities, the same setup is responsible for powerful steam pressure, which combined with a commercial-grade steam wand makes perfect milk foam.

Although I would say that this unit is best for advanced users, the intuitive control panel provides easy access to various functions, including programmable shot volumes, PID temperature control, and automatic cleaning cycles.

The only cons are its hefty price tag and large size which may not be suitable for every pocket and kitchen countertop.

But if you are an espresso “nerd” looking for the best Rocket espresso machine and don’t care about the price, R Nine One is for you.

Rocket Giotto – Great Value

Rocket Giotto - Best Value

Simultaneous brewing and steaming

PID temperature management

Built-in shot timer

The Rocket Giotto is a renowned semi-automatic espresso machine that has won accolades for its impressive performance and sturdy build.

Did you know that Giotto is the oldest Rocket espresso machine in production?

The good news is that the unit has been updated frequently with the newest and most up-to-date technologies that make sure it still delivers top-quality espresso shots.

One of the essential features is its 1.8-litre heat exchange boiler made of high-quality copper. And the machine also comes with a PID temperature controller that allows for precise temperature adjustment.

The machine’s commercial-grade group head and portafilter contribute to the even extraction and optimal distribution of water through the coffee grounds.

Just like the Mozzafiato, the Giotto unit also has R and V versions. V has a water tank and a vibratory pump. R has a rotary pump and can be plumbed into the water line.

This model differs a bit in design, with its angled side panels. However, the build quality is the same as on all Rocket machines. The only downside here is that the stainless steel might require frequent cleaning.

All in all, Giotto is still one of the best machines that Rocket company has ever made.

If you are a coffee aficionado like me, then the mention of the Rocket espresso machine should make your heart beat with excitement.

For those who are not familiar, Rocket is an Italian manufacturer of artisan espresso machines. The company was founded in 2007 with a simple mission: to produce the best espresso machines in the world.

And it’s safe to say they have exceeded that goal.

Rocket is renowned for its superior quality and attention to detail. Every component of their espresso machines is handcrafted in Milan, Italy, by master craftsmen who have been perfecting their art for generations.

The result is a seamless blend of tradition and innovation that has elevated the coffee brewing experience to new heights.

Rocket has a range of products that cater to both commercial and household use. Their commercial machines, like the R Nine One, are equipped with state-of-the-art features that guarantee precision, consistency, and efficiency.

At the same time, their home models, like the Appartamento and the R58, are designed to bring the Italian café experience right into your kitchen.

One of the things that set Rocket espresso machines apart from the competition is its patented Heat Exchange System. This innovative technology ensures that every shot is brewed at the perfect temperature, giving you the ultimate espresso experience.

Moreover, all their machines are equipped with PID controllers that allow for accurate temperature control and pre-infusion, which means you can get the exact taste you want every time.

Not to mention, commercial-grade components made from brass and copper just add to the overall experience of Rocket espresso machines.

Customer Service

But Rocket’s commitment to excellence doesn’t end with their machines. They also offer amazing customer service and support, which is critical when investing in a high-end espresso machine.

Unlike many companies that outsource their support to call centres, Rocket Espresso Machine Company has a dedicated support team that is knowledgeable and responsive.

This means you can get help when you need it and have peace of mind knowing that your investment is protected.

Although they all look almost the same, the best Rocket espresso machines differ in a few key areas such as boiler type, pump type, and programmability.

I have created this short guide below to help you to navigate these units with easy and find the best one for you.

Heat Exchange vs. Dual Boiler

Rocket models typically come with heat exchange or double boilers. It’s one of the first things you need to think about when choosing the best Rocket espresso machine for your needs.

Heat exchange boilers are advanced and efficient. They use a larger boiler to heat water for brewing while simultaneously producing steam for frothing.

Furthermore, Heat exchange boilers are known for their temperature stability, as they keep the brewing water separate from the steam production.

On the other hand, dual boiler machines have separate boilers. One dedicated to brewing and the other to steaming. They offer a better overall experience.

Dual boiler systems provide even greater temperature control compared to HX, as they have separate boilers for brewing and steaming.

Overall, both types offer great expresso brewing and milk steaming experiences. The heat exchange is great for those who want to keep things simple, while double boilers provide more precision and control over temperature.

All but two Rocket espresso machines are using heat exchange technology. Only R578 and R Nine One leverage the power of a dual boiler.

Vibratory vs Rotary Pump

Just like there was the case with the boiler system, Rocket espresso machines are built using two different pump and pressure systems: vibratory and rotary.

Vibratory pumps are used in home espresso machines and use a motor to vibrate a piston to push water through coffee grounds. They’re louder. Vibratory pumps are generally more affordable compared to rotary pumps.

Meanwhile, commercial-grade machines use rotary pumps for quiet, consistent pressure. They’re long-lasting and great for handling big espresso orders.

So how to pick the best Rocket espresso machine based on this feature?

Think about how much espresso you need. For home use, a vibratory pump is fine, but for commercial settings or making lots of coffee, get a rotary pump. A rotary pump may also be the better choice if you’re looking for a long-term investment.

R58 and R Nine One only come with a rotary pump. Appartamento offers a vibratory pump only. Mozzafiato and Giotto offer units with both types of pumps.

PID Control and Programmability

Firstly, let’s talk about PID control. PID stands for proportional-integral-derivative, and in the context of espresso machines, it refers to a system that automatically adjusts the water temperature to ensure consistency in each shot pulled.

Only Rocket Appartamento doesn’t have PID control. All other models have it!

Now, when it comes to programmability, things get really interesting. Having a programmable espresso machine opens up a whole world of possibilities for customization and personalization.

For example, you can set your preferred temperature, time, and shot volume, and even create and save your own recipes. This means that you can tailor your espresso drinks to your exact preferences, ensuring a perfect cup every time.

So how do Rocket espresso machines perform in terms of programmability? Only R58 and R Nine One fit the bill. All other models can’t be programmed.

In conclusion, the best Rocket Espresso machines are an excellent choice for anyone looking for a high-quality espresso machine. The R58 is our top pick because of its combination of features, great design, overall output, and price.

Thanks to its dual boiler setup, you won’t have to worry about adjusting temperatures after each shot. It also comes with PID controls which make it easy to fine-tune your shot profiles until they are just the way you like them.

Plus, the internally insulated coffee boiler gives you more thermal stability while extending the life of your machine in the process.

All in all, if you are serious about taking your espresso game to another level then Rocket R58 is a great option for you.

On the other hand, Appartamento offers an almost as great an experience as R58 only for a bit lower price, making it another threat investment for those on a budget.

Do Rocket Espresso Machines come with warranty coverage?

What is the difference between Rocket R and V?

The AeroPress is a Fast, Portable, No-Frills Tool for Making Terrific Coffee

The AeroPress shown on a counter.

The world of coffee accessories is vast, and it seems to just continue growing. From complex siphons to ultralight drippers, there’s a novelty accessory for everyone.

But within that universe of niche tools, the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker is one of the few that will appeal to a wide range of coffee drinkers. The AeroPress is fast, like a Nespresso machine, and easy to use, like a French press, and it makes coffee that tastes almost as great as a lovingly prepared pour-over.

Also, it comes in a durable, portable package.

Everything we recommend

rocket travel coffee machine

AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker

A simple coffee solution.

The lightweight, compact AeroPress is the simplest way to make an excellent-tasting single cup of coffee, no electricity needed.

Buying Options

rocket travel coffee machine

AeroPress Clear Coffee Press

Same press, slick look.

The clear version performs exactly the same as the original AeroPress, but costs a bit more. It’s only worth getting if you value that crisp, clear look.

rocket travel coffee machine

AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Press

A compact package.

The AeroPress Go has a slightly smaller capacity than the original, but it comes with improved accessories and seamlessly packs down into a travel cup.

The AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker ’s sterile appearance and clumsy learning curve might draw more than a few confused looks in the office kitchen the first time you use it. But it’s easy to get the hang of the technique, and we quickly grew to love this weird-looking beverage syringe. (If looks matter to you, the clear version does look a little more modern).

Anywhere you have ground coffee and hot water, the AeroPress can make a great cup of coffee in less than two minutes. If you buy one, you’ll be joining a large community of coffee enthusiasts who love the AeroPress.

Although the original AeroPress is quite portable, the AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Press makes it easier to bring all the accessories (stirrer, scoop, and filters) with you. It comes in an adorable compact container that doubles as a cup, and we found the updated accessories to be better designed than the originals. But what’s gained in convenience is lost in capacity: The Go holds only 8 ounces, whereas the original AeroPress holds 10. You can still make the original AeroPress recipe for 4 ounces of concentrated coffee (which can be diluted), but some other recipes for brewing a standard cup of coffee will need to be modified.

And if you don’t care about using all of the accessories, you may find it just as convenient to travel with the original AeroPress, which has space in its chamber to carry your stash of pre-ground beans. If you’re into camping, or you tend to seek out ultralight gear, keep in mind that the Go might not be an upgrade from the original AeroPress. The Go is about 3½ ounces heavier, not including a grinder or any other coffee accessories you might pack.

Ultimately, either AeroPress will work well for travel, but you should get the Go if you value a coffee setup that loads into a self-contained package, including a cup.

The research

A quicker way to brew great coffee, it’s easy to use, and easy to clean, flaws but not dealbreakers, accessories for the aeropress.

The Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker shown disassembled.

In the early 1990s, inventor Alan Adler set out to make something that could brew a single cup of coffee that not only wasn’t watery but didn’t involve a fussy and time-consuming process, like that of pour-over coffee . He decided to make a device that could brew coffee faster by using pressure, as an espresso machine does. After testing more than 40 iterations, Adler landed on the design that he released to the public in 2005.

The current AeroPress brewing system, which is the same both for the original and for the AeroPress Go, consists of three essential parts: the plunger, the chamber, and the filter cap. Both models also come with a stack of paper filters and an array of accessories, such as a coffee scoop (accessories vary depending on the model). AeroPress also sells additional accessories , including a reusable stainless steel filter . We’ve found it makes a muddier cup of coffee, but could be handy for travel––as long as you don’t lose it.

To use the brewer, you add a paper filter to the cap and set the chamber onto your cup or mug. Then you add ground coffee to the chamber, add some hot water, and insert the plunger and lift it up a little to create a vacuum seal (once you fit it all together, you’ll see that it’s basically a giant syringe). You wait a little bit and then press the plunger toward the grounds until you hear a hiss.

The AeroPress components neatly arrayed on a wooden cutting board and viewed from directly above.

This device, which has since been embraced by countless coffee professionals and enthusiasts alike, provides one of the quickest ways to brew a single cup of coffee ever invented. Once you’ve ground your beans and heated your water, making coffee with the AeroPress, using the recipe on the box, takes less than two minutes. That recipe produces about 4 ounces of a full-bodied concentrate; it’s not quite espresso, and you’re encouraged to dilute it with hot water before drinking, kind of like an Americano. You can also find numerous other recipes online for brewing with the AeroPress, to create everything from an 8-ounce cup of coffee ( from our preferred method ) to something approximating espresso .

In 2008, expert coffee roaster Tim Wendelboe hosted a small contest among three baristas in his Oslo, Norway cafe, giving whoever employed the best technique the title of World AeroPress Champion. To become the 10th holder of that title in 2017, Paulina Miczka had to compete against 3,000 baristas from around the world—each with unique recipes and brewing styles. We spoke with both Wendelboe and Miczka (as well as with some enthusiastic Wirecutter staff members) to help us understand what makes the AeroPress so great.

A man uses two hands to push down on the AeroPress coffe maker

To learn how to use the brewer, most of our staff members either watched one of the countless tutorial videos on YouTube or just followed the recipe on the box. We found that the AeroPress consistently produces coffee that’s full-bodied and flavorful—though maybe not as bright or as fruity as what you’d get from a perfectly timed pour-over using expertly ground beans.

Unlike a glass or ceramic pour-over dripper, the plastic AeroPress is basically “unbreakable,” as Miczka described it, and self-contained. Wendelboe agreed, saying, “Personally, I use it more for travel. When I go to Kenya or somewhere to buy coffee, I bring an AeroPress and a [hand] grinder [like the Porlex Mini ] that fits into the [brewing chamber] handle.”

Once you’ve learned the basics of the AeroPress, you can start experimenting with different recipes and the many variables of the brewing process. It’s simple to play around with water temperature and amount, grind and dose size, timing, and of course bean types and roasts, one cup at a time.

“If you don’t like the coffee you made, just make another one,” Miczka advised. “Life is too short to drink bad coffee.”

Though the AeroPress makes coffee quickly, something like a Nespresso machine or a Keurig will make a cup even faster and with less effort. Similarly, though the AeroPress makes relatively great-tasting coffee, it might not be as flavorful as a cup made with a pour-over dripper or an espresso machine . But these small compromises are actually the foundation of what makes the AeroPress so great. With a bit more time and effort, you get coffee that is much better than that from any capsule brewing system, while also avoiding the plastic or aluminum waste that capsules generate. And you’ve still put in much less time and effort than you would to master brewing with other methods.

Somewhat recently, AeroPress changed the paint used for the measurement markings on the side of the device. While the markings used to be quite durable, now they’re in a white paint that we’ve found rubs off relatively easily, even with careful hand-washing. If the AeroPress weren’t such a unique device, this might be a dealbreaker. But for those who enjoy the convenience of the AeroPress, we think it’s possible to live without the markings. You can either just eyeball the water (it’s hard to overshoot by much, since the device is so small), or you can do what coffee nerds prefer anyways and measure with a kitchen scale .

The original AeroPress only brews one relatively small cup of coffee at a time. It’s fast enough that you can brew a couple cups in a row pretty easily, but the process will be more tedious than just brewing a big batch with something like a French press, a Chemex, or a standard drip coffee maker.

You could also opt for the AeroPress XL , which can brew two cups at a time, but the increased size means it’s missing some of the features we like about the original. For example, you have to brew into the included plastic carafe, because it’s too big to fit on most mugs. And while it’s durable enough to travel with, it’s certainly not pocket-sized. It can also be a bit more difficult to press down the plunger, and we found we needed to adjust to a finer grind than we’d use for the original AeroPress to avoid under-extracted coffee.

The AeroPress’s popularity has led a number of other companies to develop accessories for it, ranging from cold-brewer add-ons to espresso-maker attachments. So we’ve tested some of those as well.

The Fellow attachment for AeroPress.

Fellow Prismo

An espresso attachment.

The Fellow Prismo’s pressurized valve makes strong coffee that resembles espresso. It’s a bit fussy to use, but it’s also a fun extra for AeroPress lovers.

The Fellow Prismo attachment, which allows you to make something like an espresso, is the best accessory we’ve tested. The Prismo replaces the AeroPress’s paper filters and perforated cap with a metal filter and a small, pressure-actuated valve that allows you to force hot water through your coffee grounds with more pressure than you can using the regular AeroPress. This simulates the pressure created by an espresso machine when you pull a shot. The result isn’t a perfect replacement for a hand-pulled shot, but the Prismo imitates one pretty well. The “espresso” we made with the Prismo tasted strong and flavorful, and it even had a crema-like foam, albeit a weak one.

Although the Prismo attachment itself was easy to use and made good coffee, the brewing process is a little fussy, requiring you to measure the coffee, water, and brew time carefully. Also, Fellow recommends that you use ultra-fine ground beans, but we found that the shots were less grainy and better-tasting when we used a less-fine grind, similar to what we used for regular brewing with the AeroPress. None of the steps were too difficult, but using the Prismo is such a precise process that you may find it easiest to use at home, rather than on the road.

At $25, the Prismo costs almost as much as the AeroPress itself, but it’s a nice extra if you want to make something like espresso at home and aren’t in a position to buy a full-on espresso machine.

AeroPress now makes something like the Prismo for the same price, but we haven’t tested it yet. We hope to test it soon, and it might be a good option if you have the AeroPress Go, which doesn’t work with the Prismo. AeroPress’s version also works with paper filters as well as reusable ones, which might allow it to produce a cleaner-tasting cup.

We also tried the PuckPuck slow-drip cold brew attachment for AeroPress. But the PuckPuck’s cold brew didn’t taste as smooth as either our office cold brew or that from the OXO Good Grips Cold Brew Coffee Maker . The full set-up was tall and cumbersome, and we found it difficult to dial in the drip rate on the PuckPuck, even when using the complementary app. When it’s finished brewing, two hours later, the PuckPuck also yields remarkably little coffee, only around 400 mL, which was about enough for two servings of cold brew. For $20 more, we’d buy the much larger, simpler OXO brewer instead.

The Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA

UPDATE: For a full review of the Appartamento TCA, check out our YouTube video .

Rocket Espresso machines are renowned for perfectly blending form and function. Rocket’s Appartamento espresso machine is no different.

This is a heat exchanger machine that allows for simultaneous brewing and steaming. Their specially designed E61 group head means excellent temperature stability and features a dual pre infusion system which results in richer, more aromatic extractions of specialty coffees.

The Appartamento also features a no-burn stainless steel steam wand, 1200 watt heating element, front-panel steam pressure gauge, and a low-water sensor that automatically shuts the machine off to avoid a dry boiler.

On top of all that, the Appartamento is visually stunning —the sleek black side panels with colorful circle accents are eye-catching in exactly the way you  want them to be.

And we haven’t even gotten to the best part yet: there’s a new version out this year and you can pre-order it right now, exclusively at Whole Latte Love. That’s right—the only place to get most of these upgraded features is right here at Whole Latte Love.

The Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA

Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA Espresso Machine with Flow Control - Black and Copper

What’s new, temperature control adjustment.

The namesake of the model, the Rocket Espresso Appartamento TCA features Temperature Control Adjustment. This PID-controller allows you to switch between one of four preset brew temperatures: low, medium, high, and very high. An LED light on the front panel indicates which temperature setting you’re on without an unattractive digital display.

This is a major upgrade in terms of the flexibility of this machine. Espresso connoisseurs will be able to achieve nuanced extractions with coffees of all origins and specificities on the Appartamento TCA. The PID controller also allows for much greater temperature stability than with a non-PID machine.

Adjusting the temperature will also increase or decrease the steam power, which comes in anywhere between .9 and 1.2 bar, depending on how hot you set the boiler via the PID controller.

Flow Control

The Appartamento TCA’s E61 brew group allows for the addition of a flow control device—but only if you shop at Whole Latte Love.

Flow control allows you to pre-infuse your coffee for a more aromatic, sophisticated extraction. It’s a feature any serious espresso connoisseur will appreciate.

Stainless Steel Boiler

The Appartamento TCA has an upgraded boiler as well. Whereas the original Appartamento had a copper boiler, the TCA’s 1.8 liter boiler is pure stainless steel, making it much more resistant to scale build-up. This means you’ll need to clean your machine less often while still maintaining optimal performance.

Updated Design

The Appartamento has always been an extremely cool espresso machine, and the TCA model continues to do justice to that reputation. In fact, there have been several aesthetic improvements on the original design that make it—if possible—even cooler.

There’s a whole new palette of six different custom panel inserts (available exclusively through Whole Latte Love), so you can ensure your TCA matches the aesthetic of your kitchen.

The cup warmer tray has also been reimagined to avoid the plastic railing that sat atop the old version of this machine. From there, the  curved back panel matches the contour of the feet for a sleeker look, and the impressive “ROCKET” logo stripe down the back of the machine demands the eye’s attention.

Overall, the Appartamento TCA is, without a doubt, one of t he most eye-catching espresso machines on the market.

A True Upgrade

Rocket Espresso has taken what was already an extremely desirable machine and made it even more so.

Before the addition of the Temperature Control Adjustment, true espresso connoisseurs would have been disappointed in the lack of control they had of extraction temperatures on the machine—no more.

For those who want to have a fully capable heat exchanger espresso machine that does visual justice to just how awesome the whole concept of at-home espresso brewing is, the Rocket Appartamento TCA is the answer they’ve been seeking.

You can preorder yours today , or, if you want to see this machine in action, schedule a Coffee Cast for a live 1:1 product demonstration.

  • We are timeless. We appreciate restraint.

Rocket Espresso firmly embraces the duality within the waves of coffee culture:

On one side, we honor the traditional Italian Espresso—a fusion of professional coffee machines, time-honored golden rules, and a historical pursuit of coffee quality, rooted in the perfect marriage of bean and machine.

On the other side, we embrace novelty and internationality through an adventurous and experimental approach. Here, the espresso machine transforms into a dynamic laboratory, embarking on a continuous journey of improvement and innovation.

Premium coffee machines: Lelit vs. ECM vs. Rocket Espresso

Premium coffee machines: Lelit vs. ECM vs. Rocket Espresso

Lelit Mara vs. Bianca vs. Giulietta. Which one to choose?

rocket travel coffee machine

It's amazing how often espresso lovers ask us about these three girls when choosing a coffee machine. Lelit coffee machines, that is. Sure, all are nice, well-equipped and can make excellent coffee . But each of these flashy machines has its own category. They are lever coffee machines, but in completely different configurations to meet the different demands of their owners.

The Lelit Giulietta, because...

Full name Lelit Giulietta PL2SVH2 . It's the largest and most expensive coffee machine of all the ones we're going to talk about in this article. It is also the only representative of a two-lever home coffee maker . For its features, it stands at the threshold of the category of home coffee makers and those of cafes.

Its advantages are that the two heads of the coffee maker are connected to two separate boilers, or 2 heat exchangers in a large 10 litre boiler . Why would you want this feature in a coffee maker? Because that way you have the option of setting the extraction parameters for each coffee machine head separately. You can thus prepare two types of coffee requiring specific brew values for the right espresso taste.

Is the Lelit Bianca or the Mara better?

Lelit mara, because....

It is inexpensive, small, lightweight and with an attractive matte brushed steel finish . You can change the temperature setting to steam priority or coffee priority mode . It is a cleanly designed coffee maker, with no unnecessary "frills". For those who want to make great coffee, but are not so keen on drawing extraction profile charts and analyzing espresso in refractometer .

With a lot of home coffee makers, you will encounter temperature instability. This is especially true when you alternate between steam whipping and espresso brewing. In such situations, you then wait for the coffee maker to finish heating or cooling, or you solve it by letting the hot water run.

Mara can adapt extremely quickly . You prepare coffee without downtime or wasted water . I should also mention that despite the traditionally noisier vibrating pump technology, it is an unusually quiet coffee maker .

Lelit Binaca, because...

You've fallen in love with Bianca's alarm clocks. She has three. One of them is the LCC - Lelit Control Center , the on-board computer for setting up the coffee machine's functions. The others are two pressure gauges . The one on the head of the machine shows the extraction pressure . The other is a double one to check the pump and steam pressure .

It has 2 boilers , a rotary pump, and most importantly a super paddle above the head of the coffee maker. With the wooden paddle pressure control you can already record and evaluate your extraction profiles. And you probably will. This unique feature allows you to experiment with your coffee brewing .

Of course, you can brew espresso without research and simply enjoy the perfect quality of coffee from such a beautiful and powerful machine that is considered the quietest coffee maker on the market .

ECM premium lever coffee machines: classics vs. mechanics vs. electronics

Ecm mechanics, because....

With the ECM Mechanika name, you can have coffee machine in Slim or Profi version . For this selection, I specifically took the ECM Mechanika IV Profi . Interestingly, although it is a pretty slim coffee maker, the manufacturers have also arranged a rotary pump into it.

ECM brand coffee makers are among those with lever operated nozzles . Personally, I prefer this method of letting the steam to whip for speed and convenience. The mechanics are not lacking the E61 head and water heating via a boiler .

It has the ability to better thermal stability even when alternating between whisking and espresso making. This is due to the energy and space saving water heating solution. This is the single boiler with HX (heat exchanger), which can prepare the appropriate water temperature for both coffee and steam.

rocket travel coffee machine

ECM Technika, because...

Want a classic-looking coffee maker with a dash more pro technology than ECM Mechanics? Take the ECM Technique. The two coffee makers described are very similar in appearance.

The Technique looks a little more robust and the nozzle valves have stainless handles. Also, of course: the E61 head, the 2 .1L boiler with HX and the rotary pump .

Plus, it's been given that technical tweak to control water temperature - PID system . What more do you need to make a great espresso? Here's everything.

rocket travel coffee machine

ECM Synchronica, because...

To the question that ended the previous paragraph, you said, "I want more!". Well, all right, I have this tip for you on an amazing German-made home coffee machine. It's called the Synchronika and it's the top of the line ECM home coffee maker.

Aside from the fact that the looks the most elegant of all its brethren, it otherwise has absolutely all the top features of the previous coffee makers. From the head of the E61 to the heel - er... to the PID. Its higher price is not due to the nicer looks, but to the addition of a second boiler .

This makes the Synchronica the only dual boiler ECM coffee machine in the "home-line" series. It has a 2 litre boiler for steam and a 0 .75 litre boiler for coffee . The ideal temperature for each function, so you can whip and "espresso" at the same time. No temperature fluctuations, downtime or other problems.

rocket travel coffee machine

Rocket Espresso Appartamento, Cronometro, Mozzafiato. What makes them different?

I'll stop short with the third of my top home coffee makers - Rocket Espresso.

Appartamento, because...

You desire a coffee maker in a novel design that will meet compactness, affordability and the necessary features for well brewed coffee. Appartamento will be an eye-catcher in the apartment, especially when combined with the copper elements on the sides.

At the same time, its technical equipment is at a very nice level. Check it out: head E61 , 1 .8L boiler with HX , pro 58mm portafilter . It also has a "cool touch" nozzle and can work with coffee pre-infusion to fine tune your espresso to your liking.

rocket travel coffee machine

Giotto Cronometro, because...

A beautifully gleaming stainless steel coffee machine on stylish "rocket" feet . Giotto Cronometro will delight the eye of any fan of classical art, after all, its name is inspired by the Florentine painter and architect Giotto di Bondone . And above all, espresso addicts. He's very good at it.

In short, it has all the important parameters of the Appartamento model . In addition, it is enhanced with PID system , timer extraction, and above all you can have it in the R version with rotary pump .

rocket travel coffee machine

Mozzafiato Cronometro, because...

So get this piece for your home if you like the characteristics of the previous Giotto Cronometro model, but prefer minimalist planes and lines .

It's the same Cronometro, just in a different "more balanced" design Mozzafiato ( translated to mean "breathtaking", which it really is in this modern-looking and full-featured R version).

rocket travel coffee machine

Home coffee makers of top brands - comparison

Now you know all the adepts for comparison in the premium lever home coffee makers category . Each of these espresso coffee makers meets both the quality requirement for making delicious coffee.

On the second point, the financial affordability thus in the price range of about 35-75 thousand crowns . The lower price category belongs to coffee machines for less demanding coffee drinkers and beginners. The higher one is basically for coffee machines in a compact version.

I am attaching here a comparison table of all the main specifications of the coffee machines reviewed. I hope this review will be helpful for your right selection of the perfect coffee machine to your home.

K-Cafe Single Serve Latte Maker

Best Latte Machine for Iced Drinks

Keurig k-cafe single serve latte maker.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab's analysts brewed over 60 cups of espresso during their extensive test of latte machines. Our pros also drew from their experience testing a wide variety of coffee gear including all types of coffee makers , single-cup brewers , drip coffee makers , coffee makers with grinders , cold brew coffee makers , nespresso machines and more. We evaluated latte machines for ease of use and cleaning, consistency, taste and noise level and we tested how efficiently they preheat, brew and froth.

Whether you're looking for a latte maker with grinders or frothing jugs, one of these expert-approved machines can make for the perfect gift for any coffee lover or will be a great addition to a coffee bar in a kitchen. Once you've picked from the best latte machines, chosen the best coffee beans and a high-quality coffee mug (there's even heated mugs) , you'll be ready to make a delicious latte to start your mornings on the right foot.

In our tests, we liked how this easy-to-use machine preheated in under five seconds, brewed espresso in about 30 seconds and produced hot frothed milk (it comes with a steam wand and frothing jug) with impressive microfoam in under one minute. This means that you could have a perfect latte in under two minutes !

It allows you to set both the temperature and amount of foam in your milk, making it easy to customize your latte. The frother automatically purges the inside with clean hot water after each use so that it doesn’t clog.

The Breville Bambino Plus was not only one of the most compact latte machines we tested, it also had one of the biggest water reservoirs (64 ounces), which means less refilling. Our favorite feature is the double-wall basket in the portafilter, which is more forgiving than single-wall filters found in most espresso makers — it helps produce a decent espresso even when the coffee is inconsistently ground. More color options are available at Williams Sonoma , including a dark red and olive green.

This latte machine is easy to use and it will consistently make a decent latte . For just under $100, it is a great value and quickly becomes worth it with the money you save avoiding coffee shops. It takes ground coffee for a single or double shot or soft coffee pods (coffee in a tea-bag-like round paper filter).

The body is made of BPA-free plastic and the removable water reservoir holds about 50 ounces of water. The shot size is not automated, which allows you to determine the size of your espresso shot. You can also control the amount of steam released from the steam wand to heat or create foam in your milk with an easy-to-use dial, though you will have to purchase a frothing jug separately.

The built-in frother and specialty coffee concentrate function on this Ninja latte maker allow for espresso-like drinks in addition to regular coffee . It can accommodate both ground coffee and K-cups, thanks to a special K-cup attachment that's interchangeable with the regular brew basket.

When brewing, you can choose between classic or rich coffee, coffee over ice, or specialty coffee. The water tank can also be positioned on the side or the back of the machine, allowing for optimal counter space configuration.

Testers noted that the milk frother does not steam the milk, so preheated milk is required. The frother also created large bubbles in the milk in some tests, and smaller, denser bubbles are preferable for an extra-creamy texture.

For a fast, straightforward latte machine for Nespresso pods , you can't beat this model.

Simply fill up the removable water reservoir (which attaches to the back of the machine) and milk container (which can be stored in the fridge), insert your Nespresso pod and choose what type of espresso-based beverage you'd like from the labeled buttons. Select from six presets: latte, latte macchiato, cappuccino, espresso, lungo or warm milk froth. The machine will dispense rich espresso and hot milk from an automatic frother that creates creamy foam. A dial allows you to adjust how foamy you want your milk.

We love the easily removable compartment that catches the used Nespresso pods, which are recyclable, and the adjustable base to accommodate coffee mugs of all sizes. As a bonus, you can customize the settings for each type of drink, adjusting the volume of espresso and milk dispensed, though some users found the customization process wasn't intuitive and required some learning.

This model is similar to the Nespresso machine, but uses ground coffee instead of pods. The Mr. Coffee Espresso Machine is easy to set up and prime, heats up quickly and it is fun to use , making it the best latte machine for beginners.

While testers found it noisier than other models, it brewed great-tasting espresso and perfectly frothed milk at the same time with the touch of a button. It features two removable reservoirs, one for water and one for milk (which can be stored in the fridge when not in use).

Point the frothing wand towards your cup and hot foamy milk will be released into it; we were impressed that steamed milk did not splatter during this process. A dial on the milk canister allows you to control the amount of foam created, and since the frothing tube can be cleaned with a touch of a button, we recommend cleaning it after each use.

This fully automated latte machine from Phillips grinds, brews and froths with the push of a button. It has a straightforward touchscreen control panel that makes it easy to select and brew five coffee drinks : espresso, cappuccino and latte macchiato as well as black coffee and Americano.

It has a removable, dishwasher-safe milk hopper with markings that let you know how much milk to add for your latte, though we wish the markings were easier to read. Testers also noted how easy it was keep clean, including the milk frother and the coffee basket with used grounds. Testers found the drinks flavorful but light-bodied, and not as hot as those from other machines.

The De'Longhi La Specialista comes with valuable bells and whistles that make its higher price point worth it.

We love the built-in grinder that measures the exact amount of ground coffee you need for either a single or double shot of espresso . The built-in tamper helps you achieve evenly compressed coffee grounds for properly extracted flavors. We also love that it preheats quickly, self-cleans and reminds you when it's time to descale and clean your coffee maker .

It features a removable water reservoir and a pull-down tray to get small cups closer to the espresso spout, which is important for richer crema. In our tests, we found both the espresso maker and frother to be relatively quiet. Most importantly, the espresso was full of flavor and crema, and the frother was easy to clean.

This latte machine makes “espresso-style” coffee by brewing a concentrated shot of coffee from your favorite K-cup (or a Keurig reusable coffee filter , which is sold separately). Its removable water reservoir holds 60 ounces of water. Out of all the latte machines we tested, we loved this lidded stainless steel frother the most because it was the easiest to use.

It has three settings (cold, latte and cappuccino), and it automatically froths milk until foamy with a simple touch of a button. The inside of the frother, which is dishwasher-safe, has a clearly marked fill line for lattes (about 6 ounces). Unlike other Keurig machines, it does not have an auto-start function, but it is still quiet, fast and easy to use first thing in the morning.

How we test latte machines

linebreak

To find the best latte machines, we rounded up well over 20 espresso machines in the Lab, and brewed more than 60 cups of espresso.

We tested each latte machines for brew time, consistency, taste, noise level and ease of use. We tested the timing and temperature of multiple espressos and made lattes with both skim and oat milk to evaluate the milk ratio of the setting and the quality of the frothing.

Our top picks were easy to set up, easy to use and reasonably quick to heat, brew and froth. The best machines produced lattes that had depth and were creamy and balanced. We favored latte machines that brew smooth and good-tasting espresso (hello, crema!) and froth both milk and milk alternatives quickly and quietly. (The frother should produce luxuriously creamy and hot milk with just the right amount of foam.)

What to consider when purchasing a latte machine

dog

✔️ Type: Latte machines generally fall into four categories: semiautomatic, automatic, super-automatic and capsule.

  • Semiautomatic machines usually require the user to add finely ground coffee to a portafilter and tamp them. They operate with a button or dial that automates the water flow, and the size of the brew is controlled by the user. These machines often have a frother wand that you will use in a pitcher or mug of milk.
  • Automatic machines generally have programmed settings for the drinks, offering more consistency. They might have a frothing wand or a milk hopper that dispenses the right amount per drink.
  • Super-automatic machines are a one-stop shop. They grind the beans, measure them out and often tamp them for you. The drinks are programmed, usually including the amount of milk that will be portioned from the milk hopper.
  • Capsule machines use pods filled with pre-measured coffee to make espresso-style coffee drinks. They offer consistency and ease of use. Some of the ones we tested had separate frothers while one had a built-in frother.

✔️ Frother: There are two basic types of frothers associated with latte machines:

  • A milk hopper clips directly onto the machine — or connects via a straw or tube — and works with the machine’s programming to heat, froth and dispense the milk. Milk hoppers can be plastic, glass or even metal. Glass and plastic are sturdy and see-through so you can tell when you need to refill; they’re also easy to clean. Metal is also easy to clean and reduces plastic use, but it can be harder to determine the level of milk available for drinks. Frothers on fully automatic machines may let you select settings that control the texture and temperature of your frothed milk.
  • A frothing wand is a self-heating shaft that's inserted it into a pitcher of milk, and is operated via a dial to heat and froth the milk. Wands can produce similar results to automatic machines, but will require a bit more skill.

✔️ Capacity: This refers to the capacity of the water reservoir as well as the coffee bean hopper and/or milk hopper, if applicable. A larger water reservoir means you won’t have to fill it as often, but a smaller one ensures fresh water more frequently. Capsule machines tend to have smaller water reservoirs, while super-automatic machines usually have larger ones (though keep in mind that some of that water is used for priming your grounds and flushing the machine). If your machine has a bean hopper, it should hold ½ to 1 pound of beans and keep them well sealed and shielded from light to preserve their flavor. If your machine includes a milk hopper, make sure it holds enough for your preference for one drink.

✔️ Pressure: Espresso is made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under high pressure. The Specialty Coffee Association — a nonprofit, member organization that represents coffee professionals — has defined espresso as “coffee through which [water] has been forced at 9 to 10 atmospheres of pressure.” Most home machines can achieve nine bars of pressure, though some machines will range up to 15 to 19 bars.

✔️ Footprint: Latte machines can be larger than single-serve, drip or espresso-only machines. Measure the space where you plan to store the machine and check the dimensions of the model before you purchase.

What is the difference between espresso and latte machine?

linebreak

A latte machine (which generally makes other espresso-based drinks as well, such as cappuccinos, Americanos, etc.) is essentially an espresso machine plus a built-in milk frother , and some models also brew drip coffee. They can brew espresso, which is a strong, concentrated form of coffee served in small shots — and also heat up and froth milk — at the touch of a button. They're a great buy if you prefer espresso drinks over drip coffee, or if you live in a household with a variety of preferences.

What type of milk works in a latte machine?

linebreak

Any type of milk will work, but not all types of milk will create the same rich, creamy foam with tiny bubbles (called microfoam) that is considered the gold standard of lattes. The best type of milk is whole, dairy milk: It has the right balance of fat, protein, sugar and water to make microfoam . Note that whole milk brands can differ in their molecular makeup, so feel free to experiment with a variety of cartons to find your favorite.

Low fat and skim milk lack the richness of whole milk and tend to create larger bubbles, but you’ll still get some foam. Non-dairy milk alternatives vary widely in their makeup of fat, protein and sugar: Some have added oils and thickeners that create a similar foam as whole milk, while others are mostly water and create very little foam. So if non-dairy milk is your preference, you will have to try different types and brands to reach your desired latte consistency. In our experience, oat milk works the best.
