5 REASONS TO RIDE IN VIETNAM

Vietnam Motorbike Tours

From twisty tarmac roads to rocky hill climbs and winding singletrack, the riding terrain on our Vietnam motorbike tours is certainly varied! That said, there is little to no sand, infrequent ruts and our tours are scheduled during the dry season to avoid to worst of the muddy conditions. So while the terrain can be challenging in places, surface under-tyre is usually quite consistent hard dirt & gravel. This actually makes the riding quite suitable for novice dirt bike riders and we always have the option to avoid the more technical sections if needed.

The riding in Vietnam is just beautiful. Whether you’re an enduro pro or relatively new to the off-road scene, you’ll have an absolute blast riding in Vietnam!

Vietnam Motorbike Tours

Rolling hills, terraced rice paddies, flowing rivers & waterfalls – the scenery in Vietnam is simply breathtaking. No two days feel the same on our motorbike tours in Vietnam and the clouds will often roll into valleys as you’re riding high above, transforming the entire feel of the place. It’s a beautiful country and the motorcycle is without the best way to explore it properly!

Motorbike tours in Vietnam

One of the oldest cultures in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has been heavily influenced by both the Chinese culture and that of the French, as well as that of the neighbouring Khmer & Champa cultures. The Vietnamese language also reflects this mixture of diverse influences such as a mix of grammar and tonality from the Thais and Chinese.

Although many people may think of Vietnam as being a Buddhist country it is officially an atheist country. For those who are religious it is more accurate to say the majority of citizens are not simply buddhist but uphold a system of beliefs known as Tam Giao which is a kind of triple religion, a mixture of Buddhism, Christianity and Cao Dai.

Vietnam Motorbike Tours

Vietnam is home to one of the world’s earliest civilisations and amongst the first to develop an agrarian society. In more recent history, Vietnam has become synonymous with the Vietnam War. Colonised by the French in 1887 they remained in control until the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (we ride through here on our Laos-Vietnam motorbike tour) in 1954 where the French finally withdrew. This allowed the division of the communist North to be officially divided from southern Vietnam, formalised by the 1954 Geneva Conference. From that point on, the US supported south was ruled by Ngo Dinh Diem’s regime in Saigon, while the Ho Chi Minh’s communist government ruled the north from Hanoi.

The Vietnam War (also known as the Second Indochina War) raged from 1955 until 1975, during which the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, supported by the US military, was defeated, meaning that Vietnam was unified under communist rule. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in remembrance of the communist war time leader who died in 1969.

The communist rule was later relaxed as Vietnam struggled to cope with post-war economic hardship, made worse by the conflicts with China and the Khmer Rouge conflict in neighbouring Cambodia. This has since led to the economic growth of private businesses as well as improved international relations which continues to the present day.

If you’re a foodie you’re going to absolutely love the traditional dishes we’ll enjoy throughout of Vietnam motorbike tours. Many of the dishes here have a French influence, without losing the classic Asian flavour and fragrances. Think delicious noodle soups, sticky caramelized pork cooked on the BBQ on beds of sticky rice, incredible seafood, spicy herb-filled baguettes accompanied by zingy salads, crunchy pickles & peanutty dipping sauces.

No trip to Vietnam would be complete without trying one of the country’s most famous dishes, ‘Pho’. Traditionally eaten for breakfast, pho is a rice noodle soup, made with chicken (Pho Ga) or beef (Pho Bo), bone broth and fresh herbs. With most meals in Vietnam you can then add a sauce to jazz it up a bit, for example lime, chilli or hoisin.

Not forgetting of course the extremely strong, almost nutty flavoured drip coffee – the perfect punch in the face to wake you up ready for a day of beautiful motorbike riding through the Vietnamese hills!

Vietnamese food is where it’s at.

Wherever we travel, it’s the flavors we remember best. A crusty bánh mì or streetside pho, seafood cù lao hotpots and (scarily addictive) coffee with condensed milk. Vietnam tours are tasty, plain and simple. We won’t just drop you in Halong Bay and call it a day. Our local leaders will introduce you to rice farmers in Sapa and fishermen on the Mekong Delta. They’ll guide you through the Cu Chi Tunnels, take you to the best beaches and on a street food crawl through Ho Chi Minh City. Our stomach’s rumbling already...

History and government, early history.

Vietnam has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest that structured societies existed as early as the 1st millennium BC. Early society was mostly feudal and agriculture-based, with various dynasties overseeing different parts of Vietnam until the Chinese invasion of 111 BC, which saw the societies of Vietnam and China intertwined. Various Chinese dynasties dominated the area for hundreds of years, although revolts finally led to Vietnam gaining self-autonomy in 905. By 938, this period of Chinese imperial domination came to a close and Vietnam entered into an age of independence.

Recent history

During the 19th century, Vietnam came under the influence of French colonizers, who assumed control of Vietnam after the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885. French Indochina was formed in 1887, and included parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and, later on, Laos. Although the French managed to suppress internal movements towards independence for many years, their control was finally relinquished in 1954 when Vietnamese forces overcame the French during the first Indochina War. Following this war, Vietnam was divided, with separate forces ruling the north (led by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with support from the United States).

The second Indochina War created wide-scale devastation and turmoil for the people of Vietnam, leading to mass migration to other parts of the world as asylum seekers tried to escape the conflict. More recently, Vietnam has benefited from the free market economy set up in 1986. Vietnam's economy continues to expand, with agriculture and industry providing the backbone and the tourism sector also contributing. Although many Vietnamese people live below the poverty line, there have been widespread improvements in literacy and health, which hopefully will continue to improve.

Geography and environment

Occupying a long, thin part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam shares borders with China , Laos and Cambodia . Much of Vietnam's terrain is mountainous, particularly the north and central highland regions. Although people still choose to live in the densely forested highland regions, most of Vietnam's population is concentrated in the cities of the low-lying areas, where infrastructure is more easily built and the land is fertile. One of the 12 great rivers of the world, the Mekong, runs through Vietnam and has been responsible for wide-scale flooding. A system of canals and levees has been quite successful in redistributing the water during monsoons, and has helped to alleviate flooding in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.

Vietnam has a nice mix of interesting markets and small shops, with handicrafts, art and clothing among the best picks.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Vietnam

1. Tailored clothing

Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to get tailor-made clothing at a great price. Find a tailor, choose your fabric, get measured and return later to collect your custom-made fashion.

2. Hilltribe handicrafts

Some of Vietnam's hilltribe people make excellent woven bags, clothing and jewelry which make meaningful souvenirs for friends back home.

As one of the world's largest coffee exporters, Vietnamese coffee is among the world's best. If you’re a coffee fan, why not take a little taste of Vietnam home with you.

4. Lacquerware

The time-consuming, intensive process of creating Vietnamese lacquer art results in a beautiful, smooth and polished finish that adorns everything from bowls to paintings and jewelry boxes. While not the cheapest of souvenirs, authentic lacquer art is worth spending a bit more on.

Culture and customs

Vietnam's ancient culture can be traced back centuries and over the years has been influenced in different ways by the Chinese, Khmer, French and American cultures. For most Vietnamese people, connection to family and community is paramount - whether they are from rural villages or living in fast-paced cities.

Most festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family - participating in rituals, feasting on special foods, giving symbolic gifts and paying respects to ancestors. Most Vietnamese people practice a form of religion that is an interesting mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, although there are also a large number of practising Catholics living in Vietnam.

Having endured the hardship that the Vietnam War brought in the 1960s and 1970s, most Vietnamese people are keen to get on with life, living with a sense of optimism and humility.

Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. • Overnight sleeper train

Get acquainted with the Vietnamese way of life while on a memorable home stay. Be exposed to new languages, cuisine and customs while making friends with your hosts and neighbors.

Is Vietnam a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

The LGBQTIA+ community is gradually gaining recognition in Vietnam, with gay pride parades becoming a regular occurrence and a lift on same-sex marriage bans in 2015. With that said, Vietnam is still a conservative culture and many still hide their sexuality from their families. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have some gay-friendly bars and events. It's generally recommended that both gay and straight couples resist showing public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Does my trip to Vietnam support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Vietnam directly support our foundation partners, Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, Vun Art and WildAct.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is helping disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, fighting the causes of human trafficking and (where possible) reuniting homeless or trafficked children with their families. Donations from our trips help their team of social workers, psychologists, teachers, and lawyers to offer individualized support to every child rescued.

Find out more or make a donation

Vun Art Vun Art empowers people with disabilities in Vietnam through vocational training and employment opportunities. They teach traditional folk painting using recycled materials which provides job opportunities, helps to preserve the ancient artform and cares for the local environment all at once. Donations from our trips support Vun Art's capacity-building programs for people with disabilities, including trainees' allowance, transportation, and equipment.

WildAct protects migratory birds of Vietnam and reduces illegal hunting by educating local communities about the importance of conservation. Donations from our trips help WildAct run educational programs to stop the illegal hunting of threatened migratory birds through knowledge-sharing in local communities.

Is Vietnam accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Despite having a high population of people with disabilities, accessible infrastructure and facilities are still limited in Vietnam. Chaotic traffic and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, uneven footpaths and high curbs add to the challenges of getting around for travelers with mobility or vision disabilities. Most entrances to hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist sites will have steps and many doorways will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs wider than 60cm. Some sights and destinations will not be fully accessible (ie. Ha Long Bay boats, Cu Chi Tunnels) but other places such as Hoi An are flat and much more wheelchair-friendly. There are likely to be situations where travelers with disabilities may need to rely on local people to help. Taxis are readily available and an affordable way to get around for travelers who are not confident in exploring independently on foot.

Vietnam Tour Highlights

Sapa trekking tours are especially popular, as they allow you to immerse yourself in the scenery and interact with the locals. You can choose from different levels of difficulty, duration, and destinations.

Some of the highlights of Sapa trekking tours are Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina, Muong Hoa Valley, the largest rice terrace in Vietnam, and Cat Cat Village, a charming H'mong settlement. Sapa is a destination that will amaze you with its diversity and charm.

Hue in 2024 promises a treasure trove of experiences for the curious traveler. Steep yourself in history at the Hue Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sprawling complex boasts magnificent palaces, temples, and gardens that once housed the Nguyen Dynasty royalty. Beyond the citadel walls, venture out to explore the emperors' tombs, each an architectural marvel nestled within its own unique landscape. This is just a taste of the many things to do in Hue – get ready to be enchanted!

Hue is also known for its cuisine, pagodas, and festivals. Hue tours are a must for anyone who wants to experience the rich and diverse culture of Vietnam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit vietnam.

The best time to visit Vietnam depends on your preferences and the regions you plan to visit, as the weather can vary quite a bit across this long country. Here are some insights on the most recommended times for different areas:

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): The dry and cooler months of November to April are generally considered the best, when skies are clear and temperatures are comfortable (60s-70s°F). Summer months can be extremely hot and humid.
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Danang, Hoi An): The drier months between February and July offer the most ideal beach weather along the central coast. Temperatures are warm but not oppressively hot.
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta): The drier season runs from November to April/May, avoiding the heavy rains of the summer monsoon season. Temperatures are hot year-round but more manageable in the "winter" months.

In general, the spring (February to April) is one of the best times to visit much of Vietnam, when days are sunny, dry and warm across most regions. The fall (September to November) can also be an excellent shoulder season.

Keep in mind Vietnam's diverse topography means mountain areas like Sapa will be quite cool in winter, while coastal areas have a more tropical climate year-round. Planning around festivals like Tet can also impact timing.

What are the typical costs associated with a trip to Vietnam?

The typical costs for a trip to Vietnam can vary depending on your travel style, but overall it is considered a relatively affordable destination. Here are some estimates for common expenses (The pricing information provided is based on the latest data available in 2024):

Accommodation:

  • Budget hotel/hostel: $15-25 per night
  • Mid-range hotel: $30-70 per night
  • High-end resort: $100+ per night
  • Street food meals: $1-5
  • Inexpensive restaurant meal: $5-10
  • Mid-range restaurant meal: $15-55

Transportation:

  • Taxi ride in cities: $3-10 for short rides
  • Rental motorbike: $10-25 per day
  • Domestic flights: $80-250 for mid-range routes
  • Open tour bus: $10-20 per route

Entrance fee:

  • Major sights like Temple of Literature-National University: 70,000 VND/visit/person; Ngoc Son Temple: 50,000 VND/visit/person; Hoa Lo Prison Historical Site: 50,000 VND/visit/person; Thang Long Imperial Citadel Center: 100,000 VND/visit/person;
  • Museums and Temples: $2-30 / entry
  • Guided city tours: $50-120 for a day tour (tipping not included)

So, some example daily budgets:

  • Backpacker: $20-35 per day
  • Mid-range: $60-150 per day
  • Luxury: $200+ per day

Additional costs to factor in are adventure activities like hiking, visas if required, travel insurance, and shopping/souvenirs. Overall, you can travel very economically in Vietnam, especially by eating street food, using public transport, and staying in budget hotels.

What are some off-the-beaten-path destinations in Vietnam?

Vietnam has plenty of amazing off-the-beaten-path destinations that offer a more authentic, untouristy experience. Here are some lesser-visited gems to consider:

  • Ha Giang Province (Far North) This remote mountainous region near the Chinese border has stunning karst landscapes, traditional minority villages, and incredible motorbike routes like the Hapkhanh Loop.
  • Cao Bang is another northern province with beautiful mountains and lakes. It's also home to the Ban Gioc Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia.
  • Ninh Binh (South of Hanoi) While overlooked by many, Ninh Binh's landscape of limestone karsts, boat-filled waterways and temples rivals that of more famous Halong Bay.
  • Pu Luong Nature Reserve is a protected area in northwest Vietnam with lush forests, mountains, and rice terraces. You can go hiking, biking, or kayaking in the reserve.
  • Mu Cang Chai (Northwest) This rural district is home to breathtaking terraced rice fields carved into the mountains by the H'Mong minority people.
  • Ly Son Island (Off South Central Coast) A tranquil volcanic island with colorful houses, garlic fields, and pristine beaches that make a unique getaway.
  • Ba Be National Park (Northeast) Vietnam's largest protected area has serene lakes, waterfalls, cave systems and minority villages to explore amid dense forests.
  • Phong Nha is a national park in central Vietnam with stunning caves, including Phong Nha Cave, one of the largest caves in the world. You can go spelunking, hiking, or boating in the park.
  • Mui Ne (South Coast) A lower-key beach town with great kitesurfing, sand dunes, and nearby Phan Thiet's fish sauce-making villages.
  • Con Dao Islands (Off South Coast) This former prison island archipelago is now a national park with preserved nature, diving spots and colonial buildings.

While harder to access, these destinations provide rewarding cultural interactions, gorgeous scenery and a low-impact, crowd-free experience compared to Vietnam's mega-tourism hubs.

FAQ about our Vietnam tours

Because Vietnam is a long expanse of country, the best time to travel depends very much on the region. North Vietnam has the driest periods from December to April, but it can also be quite cold during the winter months. In South Vietnam it is hot all year round, only it has a similar period without rain as the north. In central Vietnam, the dry season does not start until around the end of March and April and continues until about June.

Yes, regardless of which country you come from, you need a visa in Vietnam to enter. Fortunately for most nationalities can arrange this online.

To be sure of availability, we recommend booking a few days in advance for day tours. For complete Vietnam round tours it is useful to book at least 2 to 3 months in advance. When you travel during the absolute high season, it is even good to book further in advance.

Local Vietnam has two options; by credit card and by bank transfer.

  • Credit Card : Our bank charges a fee of 4.3% for credit cards.
  • Bank transfer:  Bank transfers go to a European (IBAN), UK- or US account without any additional fees.

We work with various organizations and local guides. This depends on what the possibilities are for each tour and how far you indicate it in advance. It is best to contact us directly about the possibilities.

If you have no idea which Vietnam tour suits you best, it is useful to contact us. By telling you what type of traveler you are and what your wishes are, we can easily advise you with our knowledge.

Yes we do this too. You can request your Vietnam custom made trip here.

All our join in tours are per small group. But yes, some tours also have the option for a private tour. If it is not listed, you can always contact us to view the options. In addition, you can also rent a car in Vietnam with us (including driver), where you can tour privately and with complete freedom.

We broke this Vietnam Itinerary into three main sections.

Simply decide how long you have, and use one of our itineraries to guide you to the top things to do in Vietnam!

10 Days in Vietnam Itinerary: Vietnam Highlights

Our 10 days in Vietnam itinerary will highlight the absolute best of North and South Vietnam – from hiking in Sapa , to sinking beer in lively Ho Chi Minh City (more commonly referred to by its former name, Saigon).

This can be the core of a longer 2 or 3-week journey by adding extension opportunities to it.

You can do this trip from North to South, or in reverse.

After flying into Hanoi, you’ll have one day to see this beautiful city, so get ready to hit the ground running.

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and is full of beautiful architecture, culture, and unique food.  The old city is surrounded by remnants of fortified walls, and most things you will want to visit are in the Old Quarter.

I would suggest finding a walking tour, so you can learn about the city’s history as you explore the city.

Take a stroll around the Hoàn Kiếm Lake and visit the Temple of the Jade Moutain, and stop to help the locals practice their English.

Try the local beer called Bia hơi or fresh beer, which is brewed fresh each morning, and doesn’t contain any preservatives.

One of the best things to do in Hanoi is to have an egg coffee while sitting at a café in Hanoi’s Train Street.

Then get ready to get out of the way when the train rattles past, so close to you that it takes your breath away!

For dinner, don’t forget to have a regional specialty, called Bun Cha. It’s found all through the old quarter, so you won’t have to go far to find it.

Where to stay in Hanoi: We recommend staying right in the Old Quarter.

READ MORE: Learn more about what to do in Hanoi with our Hanoi city guide .

Hanoi Train Street

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and is one of the most popular things to see in Vietnam.

The stunning bay is full of thousands of limestone islands, pristine beaches, caves, and floating villages.  The Vietnamese call it The Bay of the Descending Dragons.

One of the best ways to visit the islands is by boat.

You can take one of the many cruises on offer from the tour operators in town, taking you from Hanoi to Halong Bay, spending a night onboard a boat, and returning you to Hanoi the following day.

Alternatively, make your own way to Halong Bay, and arrange a boat from there.

Halong Bay cruise options vary depending on your budget.

The cruises normally include kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, swimming, visiting floating villages, and exploring caves.

If you find the Halong Bay cruises a little out of your budget, check out this guide to Halong Bay on a budget .

Where to stay in Ha Long Bay: Spend the first night at Halong bay, preferably on board a junk boat.  Alternatively, spend the night on Cat Ba Island . Return to Hanoi, and spend the second night there, ready to head to Sapa in the morning.

After a restful night in Hanoi after your cruise, and having enjoyed some more Bun Cha and fresh beer, it’s time to get on a bus from Hanoi to Sapa.

You can also travel by train if you prefer, but buses are the fastest and the best way to get to Sapa from Hanoi.

Alternatively, you can hire a private car, which will get you there faster, but at considerably more expensive.

Sapa is a region in Vietnam’s northwest and is home to beautiful terraced rice fields, great trekking, and exquisite vistas.

Sapa has some of the best trekking in Vietnam .

You can navigate some of these hikes yourself, arrange a private guide, or organize one of the many tours, either from Hanoi or in Sapa itself.

The most popular attraction in Sapa is the highest mountain in the region, Fan Si Pan .

But unless you take the cable car to the top, you’ll need more time in the area for this hike.

Some of the shorter day hikes are Cat Cat, and Tả Phìn , which can be done with or without a guide.

Where to stay in Sapa: Spend two nights in Sapa.  Consider a mountain lodge for the true Sapa experience, and then hop on the bus back to Hanoi early the following day.  Then fly from Hanoi to Hue. If you would prefer not to fly, you can take an overnight train or bus from Hanoi to Hue instead, arriving in the morning of Day 7.

Hue is the old Imperial City, and is where the Nguyen Dynasty held the throne for 143 years.

The last Emperor, Bao Dai, abdicated his throne and power passed to Ho Chi Minh.

During the American War, the North Vietnamese Army captured Hue as part of the Tet Offensive.

Thus began a battle to regain the Imperial city by the South Vietnamese and the Americans, which lasted almost a month with thousands dead, and the city was mostly destroyed.

After spending the previous night in Hue, or arriving in the morning by bus or train, visit the Old City with its pavilions, beautiful temples, and the Royal Palace , all protected by high walls, exquisite gates, and moats.

Hue is also known for the tombs of the Ancient Emperors.  They are all intricate and beautiful.

But don’t miss the Tomb of Tu Duc , or a visit to Tu Hieu Pagoda , which dates back to 1843.

One of the last things to do in Hue is to try the famous Bún Bò Huế , a local noodle dish with beef and chili oil, washed down with fresh beer.

Where to stay in Hue: Spend another night in Hue, then head off early on Day 8 to Hoi An.  The most spectacular way is on a motorbike tour through the Hai Van Pass.  The operators will take you on the back of a motorbike, and deliver both you and your luggage to your hotel in Hoi An.

Alternatively, you can take a private car or bus.

READ MORE: Learn more about what to do in Hue with our Hue city guide .

One Of The More Beautiful Gates Guarding The Entrance Into The Old Imperial City

Explore the beautiful city, and enjoy some rest and relaxation at the beach, sitting on beach chairs and drinking cold coconuts.

The old town is simply stunning. As you walk around you’ll pass stores selling little souvenirs,  great restaurants, and lots of clothes.

Hoi An is the place to be if you want to have some clothes made.  Tailors are everywhere, and prices are affordable.

Make sure to head out into town at night, as the city lights up with hanging lanterns, and comes alive with markets, street food, and people.

While out and about visit the wooden Japanese Covered Bridge from the 18 th Century, and take a boat ride up the river to get a better view of the lights.

Use Grab or take a taxi or scooter and head to the beach.  You can sit at one of the many restaurants, use their lounge chairs and stay all afternoon soaking up the sun!

Where to stay in Hoi An: Spend the night in Hoi An, and fly from nearby Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City the next morning.

READ MORE: Add these things to do in Hoi An to your itinerary !

The Magical Hoi An Light Up At Night With Lanterns Everywhere

After experiencing incredible Hoi An, it’s time for one last big effort as we reach the home stretch of our 10-day itinerary.

Our time allows for one of two tour options, or if you have an extra day, both.

Vietnam’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh, is a bustling array of buildings, people, food and scooters!

Saigon is where a lot of ex-pats live as it offers so much variety and, like New York, the city never sleeps!

These are your last couple of days in Vietnam, and there is plenty to see.  The Vietnam War Museum, Notre Dame (yes they have one too!), the beautiful Central Post Office, and Independence Palace are all must-see destinations while in HCMC.

One of the things to do in Ho Chi Minh City is to head to Bui Ven Walking Street , where all the action happens.

After dark, this street is packed with people sitting at small plastic tables and chairs sinking beers, eating street food, and people-watching.

After a few beers and some food, head back to your hotel and get some rest before your flight home.

Enjoy A Beer On Walking Street, While Watching The World Go By.

The Cu Chi Tunnels

Even if you’re not particularly interested in Vietnam’s war history, this is an interesting place to visit.

There are two different locations, Ben Dinh and Ben Doc .

Most tour companies usually head to the one closest to the city, Ben Dinh, which is also the largest.

The Tunnels offer an interesting insight into what it was like for the people fighting in the Vietnam/American War, their living conditions, and how they used the tunnels to hide underground during the day and fight the enemy at night.

Today you can go into some of the tunnels, which have been widened for westerners to fit in.

You can only visit the tunnels with a guide, which is provided as part of the entry ticket or part of your tour .

One Of The Small Holes Into The Massive Network Of Underground Tunnels.

The Mekong Delta Tour

If small little tunnels aren’t your thing and you would prefer to take a pleasant boat ride down the Mekong river instead, there are half-day tours available from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta.

Mekong Delta tours usually include exploring small canals by a sampan boat, visiting villages and islands, sampling exotic fruit and touring a coconut candy farm. Yum!

Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City: For your two nights in Saigon, stay in District 1 to be right in the middle of everything, District 3 if you’d like a more relaxed stay that’s still only moments away from the action or District 4 for a real local experience.

Extension Option

If you’re able to extend your tour to 2 weeks in Vietnam, you’ll have more time for these excursions. Any 2 week Vietnam itinerary should include these!

Da Nang has lots to offer .  If you are comfortable on a scooter or motorbike, you can ride from Hue to Da Nang (before going to Hoi An), through the Hai Van Pass .

This route used to be a little dangerous due to all the cars and trucks using the pass.

But since they have built the new freeway and tunnel there is very little traffic, making it a very enjoyable and incredibly scenic ride.

The best way to do this is by motorbike tour from Hue, to either Da Nang or to Hoi An, or in reverse.

Setting out from Da Nang, Ba Na Hills is a scooter ride away.  You may recognize the bridge seemingly held up by two large hands.

Between Da Nang and Hoi An lies Marble Mountain , and to the east of Da Nang there’s a large Buddhist temple complex and pagoda called Chua Linh Ung .

Set On A Mountain Top, Make Sure You Visit The Large Buddha, And Beautiful Temple.

If you have longer in Vietnam and would like to explore more of this beautiful country, combine our North and South options below to create a 2 weeks in Vietnam itinerary.

2 Week Vietnam Itinerary – 1 Week in the North

Start your 2 weeks in Vietnam in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city, with beautiful architecture, culture, and food.

While in Hanoi don’t forget to try egg coffee, fresh beer (Bia hơi), and especially the regional dish of Hanoi, Bun Cha .   (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

Take A Stroll Around The Lake And Visit The Temple Of The Jade Mountain.

Where to stay in Hanoi: Spend the night in Hanoi.  We recommend staying right in the Old Quarter.

Ha Long Bay, with its beautiful limestone islands, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It’s a must-see while in Vietnam, with an overnight boat tour to the islands, and other fun activities like SUPing, kayaking, and exploring caves.

The easiest way to see Ha Long Bay is to organize a tour from Hanoi . (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

Where to stay in Ha Long Bay: Spend the first night at Ha Long Bay, preferably on board a junk boat.  Alternatively, spend the night on Cat Ba Island .  Return to Hanoi, and spend the second night there, ready to head to Sapa in the morning.

Think of beautiful rice terraces set high up in the mountains, trekking, and staying in mountain lodges.

Sapa is located in the northwest part of the country, and best seen by a two-day tour from Hanoi. (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

The old imperial city still has many secrets to uncover.

Hidden behind towering walls and large gates, you can explore where the last Emperor ruled from before abdicating his rule in favor of Ho Chi Minh.

This is where the North Vietnamese overtook the city, sparking a battle that lasted for almost a month in what was known as the Tet Offensive. (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

Where to stay in Hue: Spend the night in town.  Leave your bags at your hotel while you explore the city the next morning, then head to Hoi An after lunch.

The most spectacular way is on a motorbike tour through the Hai Van Pass .  The operators will take you on the back of a motorbike, and deliver both you and your luggage to your hotel in Hoi An.

Head to the beach during the day and relax on one of the many lounge chairs offered by the restaurants lining the foreshore of Central Vietnam.

In the evening enjoy the magical old town that comes alive at night with lights, markets, food, and more!  (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

Spend Your Day Relaxing And Drinking Cold Coconuts.

Where to stay in Hoi An: Spend the night in Hoi An, and fly from nearby Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, or head to Nha Trang to link up with the Southern Vietnam Itinerary below.

Considered the inland version of Halong Bay, Ninh Binh is best seen by boat, on a pushbike, or scooter.

We spent two full days in Ninh Binh and enjoyed a pushbike ride in the surrounding area.

We then hired a scooter in Ninh Binh and set out to see more of the beautiful lush hills, taking a boat ride through Tam Coc, and visiting pagodas.

You can easily book an awesome 2-day, 1-night tour of Ninh Binh from Hanoi if you’re not comfortable riding a scooter in the crazy Vietnam traffic.

Tam Coc Is Considered The Inland Version Of Halong Bay.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is home to over 300 caves and grottoes.  This UNESCO World Heritage Site protects the oldest karst system in Vietnam.

It comprises of a precious ecosystem, limestone forest, and the world’s largest cave, Son Doong .

The park offers eco-tourism, mountain climbing, trekking, flora and fauna, and caving.

Some of this can be done independently, but tours are often the best option to get the most out of your time.

The My Son ruins are another important UNESCO World Heritage site in central Vietnam.

This temple complex was built by the Champas during their rule, and was influenced by Hinduism.

The ruins of the brick temples and sculptures are often likened to Angkor Wat in Cambodia or Bagan in Myanmar.

Book a tour of My Son to make the most of your experience.

Ba Be Lake is the centre of the National Park, and of the Ba Be Lake legend.

People believe that the lake was formed by an enchantress, who cursed the people of the surrounding area for not showing compassion to her when she asked for help.

Legends aside, Ba Be Lake offers a wide range of activities, from trekking, kayaking, motor-biking, waterfalls, caves, and the natural beauty and diversity of the area.

The highest point of Bach Ma National Park is the 1450m high mountain of the same name.

The park is known for its biodiversity, with lots of birds, flora, mammals, and primates.

The government finally protected the area in 1962, after the area was greatly damaged due to the use of agent orange during the Vietnam War.

The area is now safe for people to explore and is best seen with a tour guide .

You can hike the Five Lakes Cascade Trail taking in the waterfalls, visit the monastery, and hike the Pheasant Trail .

A visit to the demilitarized zone (DMZ), is a great one-day outing for history buffs.

The DMZ area was the dividing line between North and South Vietnam during the war, and as a result, saw heavy fighting.

The tour explains the extent of the fighting in this area, and the importance of the location in the Vietnam War.

2 Week Vietnam Itinerary – 1 Week in the South

Next on your 2 weeks in Vietnam, spend 1 week in the south of Vietnam. You could easily spend 2 weeks in Vietnam in just the north or the south, but you can also spread out your time between both areas.

Our Southern itinerary begins in Nha Trang.  Either fly there from Saigon or Hanoi, or take a bus down from Hoi An if you’re continuing on from our Northern Itinerary.

Nha Trang is the most famous seaside resort in Vietnam and is known for its white-sand beaches, coastal islands, and clear waters with abundant marine life, making it perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling.

The town itself also offers interesting cultural sites close by, and places where you can pamper yourself with a mud-bath, or enjoy a seafood dinner.

Where to stay in Nha Trang: Spend a night in Nha Trang, and take a bus or private car to Dalat the next morning.

After a relaxing time on the beach, it’s time to get some more culture in during your 2 week Vietnam itinerary!

Dalat is heavily influenced by the colonial period from the French occupation, as the French built their holiday homes here to take advantage of the temperate weather.

With beautiful buildings, gardens, interesting architecture, coffee and tea plantation tours, waterfalls, mountain biking, hiking, and canyoning , you don’t want to miss out on this city!

Where to stay in Dalat: Spend the night in Dalat, and take a bus or private car to Mui Ne the next morning.

READ MORE: Learn more about what to do in Dalat with our Dalat city guide .

Three main things are offered in this beautiful resort destination; relaxation, watersports, and sand dunes.

Mui Ne beach is dotted with resorts, hotels, and hostels, and is a great place to just sit and enjoy your surroundings.

Although Mui Ne is more than just the beach, this area is set up for tourists and has one main street of shops, cafes, bars, and shopping.

Being a beach town, watersports are a big thing here, and just about everything is on offer from kitesurfing to parasailing.

The Mui Ne sand dunes are popular, and a spectacular sight.

There are two locations, the smaller, closer, red sand dunes, and the white sand dunes about 26km from town.

Tours are available for both locations and you can also hire dune buggies, or go sledding!

Where to stay in Mui Ne: Spend a night in Mui Ne, then shake the sand from your belongings and take a bus or the train to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) the next morning.

There’s so much to see and experience in this historic city, including day tours to some pretty important locations, that you’ll need two days .

On the first day, you’ll head out into Ho Chi Minh City.  It has some great cultural sites, like the Vietnam War Museum, Independence Palace, Notre Dame, and it also boasts some pretty great nightlife too.

For the second day, we suggest you head out of the city on a day tour.  There are two great options: The Chu Chi Tunnels, or a trip to the Mekong Delta. (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

The War Museum In Saigon Is A Must-See While Visiting Hcmc.

Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City: For your two nights in Saigon, stay in District 1 to be right in the middle of everything, District 3 if you’d like a more relaxed stay that’s still only moments away from the action or District 4 for a real local experience. Fly to Phu Quoc Island on Day 6.

Phu Quoc is a small island off the coast of Cambodia, lined with white sand beaches and palm trees.

There are many resorts along the southwest coast providing you with ample opportunity for some relaxation time, while you swim, and eat your last fill of tasty Vietnamese food.

Phu Quoc island is home to mountains, tropical rainforest, hiking and wildlife, all within its National Park.

Lots of tours are available to explore the island which offers snorkelling as well, or you can hire a scooter and set off by yourself.

One Of The More Beautiful Beaches In Phu Quoc, With Beautiful White Sand, And Crystal Clear Water.

Where to stay in Phu Quoc Island: Spend two relaxing nights on Phu Quoc Island, then fly back to Saigon to catch your onward flight!

If you have more time to spend during your 2 weeks in Vietnam, take the ferry to the mainland, and continue overland to some of the extension options listed below, or to Cambodia.

If you have more time for your 2 week Vietnam itinerary, or you want to further explore one area rather than hopping around, here are some ideas!

Depending on what you did in 7 days for our Southern Vietnam Itinerary, if you have time you might like to see the other option best explored out of Ho Chi Minh City.  (See Above 10-day Vietnam Itinerary)

During the French occupation, and later the Saigon regime, this island was used to house political prisoners and prisoners that were considered especially dangerous.

Aside from its harrowing past, the island is known for its natural beauty with over 80% of the island being a National Park.

These days the island is frequented for its spectacular snorkelling and diving, with abundant coral reefs, beautiful beaches, and hidden lagoons.

Can Tho is the de facto capital of the delta region and an unassuming city full of life.

Most of the activity happens around the pier where you can enjoy great food and cold beer.

Boat rides are available to show you more of the city and surrounding area, and visit some early-morning markets.

Lots Of Life On The River. Make Sure You Get Up Early For A Tour Of The Nearby Floating Markets.

If you’d like a little break from the tourists and are looking to just relax and hang out with the locals, Qui Nhon is the place to come .

Unspoiled by tourism, this sleepy town has squeaky white sand beaches, snorkeling, swimming, temples, and museums.

Cat Tien National Park is comprised of two sections Cat Loc, and Nam Cat Tien, the former being the most visited of the two.

The river by Nam Cat Tien houses an important Hindu archaeological site and temple, where a large number of artifacts have been uncovered and are now in the Dalat museum.

The national park has spectacular flora and fauna and trekking.

Vietnam Tours

Where the only constant is change

Successively occupied by China, Russia, France, Japan, and the United States, Vietnam has had its share of foreign interference. But today, the Vietnamese are focused on rocketing into the future. In this new era of confident self-determination the atmosphere is one of palpable optimism. Fortunately for travellers, Vietnam's traditional charms have not yet been eclipsed. Although noisy motorbikes continue to replace bicycles at an alarming rate, the former Communist stronghold of Hanoi has maintained its narrow-laned charm, while the melting limestone pinnacles of Halong Bay are as otherworldly as ever. From the ancient neighbourhoods of Hoi An to the vast Mekong Delta, the country offers an astonishing variety of scenery. Whether your fascination is wartime relics or beaches and rice paddies, see Vietnam now, because every year it seems to reinvent itself.

Geography and environment during Vietnam tour packages

If you're looking for a fantastic vacation destination in Southeast Asia, Vietnam should be at the top of your list. With its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam tour packages have something to offer every traveler. Vietnam, which occupies a long and narrow section of the Indochina peninsula, borders China, Laos, and Cambodia. Mountains can be found throughout most of Vietnam, particularly in the North and Central Highlands. The majority of the people in Vietnam live in low-lying areas with easy infrastructure and public and fertile agricultural land. Vietnam frequently experiences flooding because of the Mekong, one of the world's 12 major rivers. The Mekong Delta and nearby areas have experienced less flooding thanks to the canal and dike system's ability to distribute floodwater.

Vietnam History - Vietnam tour packages

Early History

The area that is now Vietnam has been inhabited since the beginning of time. According to archaeological discoveries, organized communities started to emerge as early as the first millennium BC. Up until the Chinese invasion in 111 BC, which caused the societies of Vietnam and China to converge, early society was mostly focused on agriculture and feudalism, with numerous dynasties ruling over different regions of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, the region was ruled by various Chinese dynasties, but in 905, the Vietnamese gained independence as a result of uprisings. Vietnam entered an era of independence in 938, marking the end of this period of Chinese imperial rule.

Recent History

French colonialists who took over Vietnam following the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885 had an influence on it during the 19th century. Parts of Vietnam were included in French Indochina and Cambodia, and Laos which was created in 1887. First, after Vietnamese troops beat French forces in the Indochina War in 1954, the French were finally forced to give up control of the internal independence movements they had long sought to stifle. Vietnam was split up after this conflict, with separate governments in the north (headed by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with American support).

The second Indochina War caused widespread destruction and upheaval for the Vietnamese people, and as a result, a large number of individuals left Vietnam in search of sanctuary in other parts of the world. Vietnam's economy had almost completely collapsed by the 1980s, which prompted additional waves of emigration from Vietnam. Vietnam has lately profited from the free economy that was established in 1986. Vietnam's economy is still growing, with agricultural and manufacturing serving as the foundation and the tour operators also making a contribution. Despite the fact that many Vietnamese people are living in poverty, literacy rates have increased significantly.

While Vietnam's history has been marked by conflict and hardship, the country has made significant strides in recent years towards economic growth and development. With a booming tourism industry and a wide range of Vietnam tour packages to choose from, travelers from all over the world are discovering the beauty and charm of this Indochina gem.

Shopping in Vietnam - Vietnam tour packages

Vietnamese markets and small businesses are a good mix of the intriguing; the finest choices include handicrafts, art, and and clothing, which can be explored through Vietnam tour packages.

To be sure that you can carry particular things back into your place of origin, it is a good idea to verify with your local customs officers. In general, quarantine regulations in Australia and New Zealand are strict.

Vietnam souvernirs for Vietnam tour packages

1. Tailored Clothing

One of the best places on the planet to find high-quality custom apparel is Hoi An. Locate a tailor, select your fabrics, get fitted, then come back later to pick up your bespoke clothing.

2. Hilltribe Handicrafts

Some of the hill tribes during the Vietnam tour produce great woven jewelry, apparel, and bags that make thoughtful gifts for family and friends back home.

Vietnamese coffee is among the greatest in the world, and it comes from one of the biggest exporters in the world. Why not bring a little bit of Vietnam's tour home with you if you are a coffee habitué?

4. Lacquerware

Vietnamese lacquer art is created through a labor-intensive, lengthy process that yields a stunning, smooth, and polished finish that covers everything from bowls to jewelry boxes and paintings. Although those are not the low-priced keepsakes, genuine lacquer work is pricey but worth while during Vietnam tour packages.

Places to visit in Vietnam tour packages

Halong Bay in the early morning is unlike anything else. Hundreds of enormous karst structures may be seen rising above the boat as the mists dissipate. It feels like you are waking up in a watercolor painting of a mystical place in the beautiful morning light. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Halong Bay in Vietnam is through well-designed Vietnam vacation packages that cater to your interests and preferences.

When visiting the capital of Vietnam through Vietnam tour packages, Hanoi, the phrase "motorcycle" comes up frequently. It's insane and chaotic, but it manages to work. It is preferable to take in this exotic vista from a rooftop cafe. Watch the uproar below as you place another coffee order.

The Mekong Delta is a must see attraction in Vietnam tour packages. Some of the friendliest people on earth reside in this wide region of floating marketplaces, emerald rice paddies, and verdant islands. For a first-hand view of life in the Delta and to get to know your neighbors, set sail for one of the sleeping islands.

Vietnam vacation packages offer an excellent opportunity to explore the vibrant villages of Vietnam's minority groups such as the Zay and the Blue and Black H'mong, amid the highlands. Due to the area's isolation, an overnight hike where you stay with a local family is a great way to explore it.

Quy Nhon is a charming seaside off the major tourist route. Even a driving trip here is worthwhile. Islands, lagoons, and dunes gradually give way to paddy fields and large plantations as the route follows rocky slopes plunging into the South China Sea. A place worth going when thinking about a Vietnam tour package.

Hue is a city for heritage aficionados since it is crammed with imperial monuments. Prior to channeling your internal emperor and having a dragonboat journey down the Perfume River, discover the Citadel and its abandoned Forbidden Purple City.

Boot manufacturers, tailors, and artisans call this shopping heaven home more than you could possibly visit in a lifetime. Hire a bicycle and tour the Old Town while you wait for your suit to be constructed; the streets are gloriously car-free.

Most people still refer to HCMC as Saigon, and it is a busy metropolis. It moves quickly, is thrilling, and has wonderful sights. Skyscrapers, cathedrals, and markets all coexist in a heady mingling of traditional, colonial, and modern architecture.

The hustle and bustle of Hanoi seems a million miles away in Mai Chau. The tranquil atmosphere is aided by misty mountains and verdant rice fields. Be sure to keep an eye out for the traditional textiles produced by the local White Thai population during Vietnam tour packages.

Known as the "honeymoon capital" of Vietnam, is perpetually the must-going place in the spring. Discover the bizarre local artists, take in the French-inspired ambiance, and explore the nearby lakes, waterfalls, and forests. Fantastic!

Vietnam tour packages - Vietnam Culture and Custom

The Chinese, Khmer, French, and American civilizations have all had a different impact on Vietnam's ancient culture over hundreds of years, which may be centuries old. Whether they hail from remote villages or live in bustling metropolises, family and community connections are important to the majority of Vietnamese people. The majority of festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family, where rituals are performed, special foods are enjoyed, symbolic presents are exchanged, and ancestors are honored. Although there are certainly a lot of Catholics in Vietnam, the majority of Vietnamese practice a fascinating blend of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. When the Vietnam War brought hardships in the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Vietnamese people desired to integrate into society, live optimistically and modestly. Let's experience the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam through its festivals, rituals, and special foods with the help of Vietnam tour packages.

Description

Our Summer Rim to Rim Tour is a Grand Canyon legend and deservedly so! The ability to hike across the Canyon is what makes the Rim to Rim so special, as you have the unique opportunity to experience both rims and everything in between. The summer version runs from May 12 through September 15, and it’s important to be prepared (mentally and physically) to be potentially hiking in 105+ degree fahrenheit temperatures. If you’d prefer a Rim to Rim experience with cooler temperatures, check out our Autumn Rim to Rim or Winter Rim to Rim to Rim .

The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike begins on the cooler, shaded North Rim where we hike down the North Kaibab Trail. We then meet up with Bright Angel Creek and hike along its shores to Cottonwood Campground, a stunning desert oasis for our first night. Our second campsite is the famous Bright Angel Campground, and on the hike there we’ll traverse the amazing Bright Angel Box Canyon. During the evening of the second day, we’ll enjoy camping near Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River, before continuing our hike via the Bright Angel Trail to Havasupai Garden on the third day. We spend our last evening at the lush desert oasis of Havasupai Garden. We resume our hike and top out the fourth day at the South Rim, where a shuttle awaits us to complete our journey back to Flagstaff.

Important : It is strongly recommended to book your  Grand Canyon backpacking trip  5 months in advance due to the Park’s permit system. Backpacking permits are issued on the first of the month 4+ months in advance (see  deadlines for each month .) Permits for the most popular trips sell out very quickly during the initial lottery, so registering prior to the deadline of the month you’re interested in is highly beneficial. You can also pick any dates!

$1955 Per Person

Permit deadlines.

Grand Canyon’s permit process is complicated, but we take care of everything so you don’t have to worry about it! Here’s what you do need to know – Grand Canyon issues backpacking permits through a lottery system 4+ months in advance ( deadlines listed below ). Permits for popular trips sell out immediately during the initial lottery, so  it’s important to register before the process begins .

When you register we will ask you for backup dates and itineraries, as they are helpful if your first choice isn’t available. If a permit request is denied, pre-permit registrants have top priority for open spaces on confirmed permits, and very often get spots. Finally, we have good success rates, but your deposit is 100% refundable or transferable if we’re unsuccessful. Still have questions? Call us at 800-715-HIKE (4453)!

  • Shuttle to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon: 4-hour drive from Flagstaff
  • Hiking Mileage: 6.8 miles
  • Elevation Loss: 4,161 feet

We begin our Grand Canyon Rim to Rim backpacking trip at 8,000 feet and hike downhill approximately 7 miles to our first camp at Cottonwood Campground. This is a fantastic hike for the natural history buff as we descend through a dense mixed conifer forest on the North Rim to a semi-arid High Sonoran desert environment inside the Grand Canyon. Also en route we hike through the ominous and stunning Red Wall Limestone and past Roaring Springs – a cascading stream erupting from the side of an adjacent slope.

  • Hiking Mileage: 7.2 miles
  • Elevation Loss: 1,600 feet

On day two we’ll break camp and hike another 7 miles down to Bright Angel Campground. En route we traverse the amazing Bright Angel Box Canyon. With sheer granite and schist walls rising hundreds of feet above us, we hike along the crystal clear, spring-fed desert oasis of Bright Angel Creek. Our camp is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon adjacent to the Colorado River and historic Phantom Ranch.

  • Hiking Mileage: 4.5 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1,500 feet

After a hearty breakfast we’ll pack up and make an early departure to take advantage of the cool hiking hours of the morning. Hiking on the Bright Angel Trail along the Colorado and up Pipe Creek we’ll arrive at Garden Creek. From here we’ll hike upstream past its junction with Pipe Creek to Havasupai Garden – a spring site that watered seasonal Havasupai garden plots for centuries. From here it’s a short final hike to our camp for the night – Havasupai Garden Campground, another enchanting camp with shade and water.

  • Hiking Mileage: 4.8 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
  • Shuttle to Flagstaff: 1.5-hour drive from the South Rim

A casual morning breakfast will precede a beautiful hike out as we continue our ascent to the rim via the Bright Angel Trail. This trail is the most hiked in the Park because of its endless views, availability of water, and its steady grade taking us out of the Grand Canyon. It’s a finish to a hike you’ll never forget!

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Highly Recommend

Everything about the trip exceeded my expectations! Leading up to the trip, Wildland Trekking had top-notch communication with us. Chris was an amazing guide. The perfect amount of leadership to keep us safe and on time, knowledge to educate us about the canyon, plant life, wildlife, and hiking in general, and friendly demeaner to immediately set a team/family tone within our group of complete strangers. His rustic cooking talent was over-the-top! I have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS about our trip, and highly recommend Wildland Trekking.

The 7 best road trips in Vietnam

Vietnam is perfect for exploring on two (or four) wheels © monticelllo / Getty Images

Long and sinuous, like the mythical naga serpent, Vietnam curves around the eastern shores of mainland Southeast Asia, stretching all the way from China in the north to Cambodia and the Mekong Delta in the south. Its twin megacities – Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City – are divided by 1137km (707 miles) of mountains, jungles, paddy fields, beaches and historic sites. In other words, this is perfect country for road-tripping.

The trip between Vietnam's northern and southern capitals is just one of many epic road trips that call out to adventurers on four (or, more commonly, two) wheels. With more than 61 million motorbikes on Vietnam's roads, intrepid bikers will find themselves in good company as they explore the country’s wonderfully diverse landscapes, with ample repair shops, gas stations and food stops along the way.

Whether you’re thinking of hitting the road by car or motorbike, here’s our pick of Vietnam’s best road trips.

Green valley with forested mountains in Ha Giang, Vietnam

1. Ha Giang Loop

Best road trip for wild swimming and mountain passes Ha Giang–Ha Giang; 350km (218 miles)

The soaring peaks and plunging valleys of Vietnam’s northernmost province are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, with plenty of stop-offs for revitalizing dips in waterfalls, roadside snacks (nothing keeps energy levels up like dried buffalo), and to snap photos of the rice and corn terraces tumbling down the valley’s steep hillsides. Start the adventure in Ha Giang city, the gateway to a land of conical, forested peaks plucked straight from an antique scroll painting.

Ha Giang means "water and mountains" in Vietnamese, and you’re never far from either when you tackle this loop through Yen Minh, Dong Van and Bao Lam, with gurgling streams and cascading waterfalls forming a major part of the scenery. Winding its way through communities of at least 10 different ethnic minorities, this rewarding multi-day drive offers plenty of opportunities for side trips and activities, including trekking , river-boating and caving.

Planning tip:  The Ma Pi Leng Pass is hands down the most scenic section of the drive, with jagged mountains surrounding the emerald Nho Que River. Remember to factor in a half-day for a quiet boat trip with a spot of swimming in its enticing waters.

A huge waterfall located on the border of Vietnam and China. Vast quantities of water flow over the falls.

2. Cao Bang to Ban Gioc

Best road trip through Vietnam's countryside Cao Bang–Ban Gioc; 80km (50 miles)

The drive from Cao Bang to the churning Ban Gioc Waterfall , which straddles the China–Vietnam border, takes adventurers through some of Northern Vietnam’s most pristine pastoral terrain. Lush farmlands, stilt villages and crystal-clear lakes are all on the itinerary. However, for driving enthusiasts, nature's creations might be outdone by an artificial wonder: the 3.5km-long (2.1 miles) Ma Phuc Pass, with its seven writhing bends offering gorgeous views of the terraced fields below.

For more natural highlights, consider a stop-off at the vast, stalactite-filled Nguom Ngao Cave , which extends for several kilometers underground, but save plenty of time for the road trip’s primary focus. Fed by the Quay Son River, the Ban Gioc Waterfalls are located partly in China and partly in Vietnam, and they thunder dramatically over a series of greenery-draped shelves. Take in the falls from the viewing platforms or hop on a bamboo raft for a closer look at the impressive cascades, which fall over 30m (98ft).

Planning tip:  While worth tackling as a standalone trip, this route is also a popular add-on to the Ha Giang Loop.

An aerial view overlooking the hill station of Dalat in Vietnam. The town is shroud in mist due to its high altitude, meaning only a few buildings are visible.

3. Dalat to Nha Trang

Best road trip to a French colonial hill station Dalat–Nha Trang; 134km (83 miles)

From the cool climes of the highlands around  Dalat to the sunny beaches of Nha Trang , this short and simple road trip is all about changing scenery and microclimates. Get an early start so you have time to appreciate the hilly terrain en route and the coastal views near the end of the drive.

Begin in the hillsides around Dalat, founded as a salubrious hill station where French colonists came to escape the oppressive heat of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). This is a unique area of Vietnam, where the scent of pine trees hangs in the air and farms cultivate strawberries, coffee and flowers instead of rice.

As you descend from the mountains and the humidity begins to return, things start to feel more conventional. The paved QL27C road unfurls around hills and snakes through tiny villages all the way to the coast, where a dip in the turquoise waters of Nha Trang Beach makes for a worthy close to this trip.

4. Hai Van Pass

Best road trip for dramatic views and hairpin turns Danang–Lang Co Beach; 20km (12 miles)

Before the Hai Van Tunnel was completed in 2005, just the thought of enduring the hairpin turns and blind corners of the Hai Van Pass was enough to send shivers down the spines of bus passengers traveling between Danang and Hue . Now with significantly less car traffic, this short but stunning ride is a manageable, memorable trip even for the novice driver.

Translating as "Ocean Clouds" in Vietnamese, the Hai Van Pass is bordered by jungle-clad mountains on one side and cliffs plunging down to the East Sea on the other, a dramatic setting that has made this road one of the most Instagrammed highways in the world – with a whopping 4298 pictures per mile!

Detour:  Stop at the mid-way point for a Vietnamese-style iced coffee and admire the Indochina-era Hai Van Gate and the remains of several French fortifications. While the pass officially ends at the windswept Lang Co Beach at its northern end, most travelers continue for another hour or so to reach the former imperial city of Hue to gaze at its palaces and timeless tombs.

Traders at the floating market in Can Tho

5. Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho

Best road trip along the lush Mekong Delta Ho Chi Minh City–My Tho; 70km (44 miles)

The rice paper-flat Mekong Delta doesn’t get much road trip love because its every-shade-of-green rice fields can turn from mesmeric to slightly monotonous as the miles mount up. However, once you get outside of sprawling, smoggy Ho Chi Minh City , you’ll see the urban shrubbery give way to majestic palms, lush banana trees and glimmering waterways amongst the emerald rice paddies.

While the scenery here is certainly evocative, the best part of driving in the Mekong Delta is taking your foot off the gas and losing yourself in the tiny riverside laneways and byways, where life moves at a very different pace to the buzzing streets of HCMC.

When you eventually make it to My Tho – a town famed for its chewy noodle, pork and shrimp soup – further cultural experiences await, with the flower farms of Sa Dec a short drive to the west and Can Tho , home to the largest floating market in the Delta, located to the southwest.

A fishing boat floating in blue waters off the Con Dao islands

6. Con Son Island

Best road trip for deserted island beaches Dam Trau–Ben Dam; 25km (15 miles)

Isolated from the mainland for years, the Con Dao islands are one of Vietnam’s natural wonders. Con Son, the largest and only inhabited island of the archipelago, has just one main road stretching across its length – a motorcycle trip is not only the best way to see the rural splendor of the island but also to hop from one gorgeous deserted beach to the next.

Start at Dam Trau, a long stretch of beach dotted with seafood shacks near the airport, and wind your way past forested hillsides, a French colonial-era prison, and a string of glorious beaches that only appear during low tide, ending up at Ben Dam where ferries from the mainland come and go. Take things slowly over a morning or afternoon, and bring your swimming costume.

7. Ho Chi Minh Highway

Best road trip for quintessential Vietnam experiences Ho Chi Minh City–Hanoi; 1880km (1168 miles)

There are several different routes between Vietnam’s two biggest cities, depending on whether you like beaches, mountains or smooth highways, but for the best balance between driving time (about two weeks) and excellent scenery, hit the Ho Chi Minh Highway, part of which was once used to transport soldiers and supplies during the Vietnam War.

After exiting busy Ho Chi Minh City, follow the road along the Truong Son mountain range as it snakes its way past sleepy hamlets, where the smell of coffee from nearby plantations hangs thick in the air. This barren plateau gives way to forested mountains as you reach Central Vietnam, considered the most scenic stretch of this epic road trip.

Detour:  Adventurers will want to stop at Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park , home to the world’s largest cave, and Cuc Phuong , Vietnam’s oldest national park , located in the Red River Delta, before joining the throng of traffic on the ancient streets of Hanoi .

Your guide will help you traverse the winding side streets full of pop-up restaurants which offer truly local food like "bánh cuốn" (rice rolls with pork and herbs inside), "bánh gối" (pillow cake), and many kinds of noodle dish, such as Bun Cha, Pho. Depending on your preferences the guide will explain what is in each dish so you can choose the one you like the best, to try. You will be surprised how tasty these dishes are and how unique they are to Hanoi. A highlight is a stop at a ‘Bia Hoi’ store in the Old Quarter where you get to sample fresh, local homemade beer - famous all over Hanoi and other areas of northern Vietnam.

Reviews from our travelers

The four of us really enjoyed our tour of some great little places in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Plenty of food and a really bunch of people on the tour. Violet was a great host who went out of her way to make sure everyone had a good time and mixed with the other participants

Stop reading and just go book it. Trust me. You want more? Fine! We loved our experience with Lucy on our Kim's Food Tour. We visited seven fantastic little eateries, sampled a bunch of food, shouted 'Sticky Rice - please don't kill me' while wading into the river of bikes on every street, and came back with a more thorough understanding of Hanoi cuisine. from : cwbush83 - Armidale, Australia

We had a very nice street food tour with Kim Tours. Our guide was very friendly and we tasted a lot of strange things we would not even consider trying :) I highly recommend this tour operator recommended by AJICE - Reykjavik, Icelan

We are still yelling STICKY RICE each time we cross the road. Book this trip and see why :) Cherry was our guide and was so friendly, so enthusiastic, and a blast to be around. The food was good and we got to go to so many places that we would otherwise be intimidated of. This was such a great way to spend the night and well worth the money.

Had a great evening walking around the many side streets of Old Town Hanoi. This is a fantastic little tour stopping at around 8 different places for proper street food. Some of the places you would never go into if you were travelling by yourself as you would probably not even guess that they were food venues. Our hosts were Emily and Monster ( Flower ) who both did a great job in explaining the food to us and ensuring we didn't get mown down whilst crossing the crazy roads of Hanoi. A great evening with a group of strangers from around the world . Real good fun at a great price. I think it was less than £20 per person. A real must do trip when in Hanoi.

I spent a fabulous time in a small group (3 person) with two dynamic, nice and funny young guides. All the food I tested, was very tasty and good. A good introduction of the Vietnamese food and a really good exchange with our guides. We walked across the city, between the different local restaurants and talked a lot about there country, there culture and i taught them some french. We laughed a lot. Many thanks loan and daisy. Remember : " bonjour, comment ça va?" Hope to hear from you.

Hanoi Street Food & Drink

In Hanoi the food is plentiful, it’s everywhere that you look and is an integral part of the livelihoods of many locals. More often than not, the street is the stage where much of what is food related in Hanoi takes place. Street food can be found on the main streets of Hanoi, and down many of the side streets and alleways. Most areas aren’t dedicated to food, and you’ll find places to eat sandwiched in between residences and all kinds of businesses. Several times my wife and I would walk down an alleway that looked interesting only to find ourselves in the courtyard of a residence. The looks we received on these occasions ranged from puzzled to nonchalance. I’m not sure whether there is any regulation as to where people can sell food. Most of the time the wandering vendors seem to simply set up shop where they want, and then move on to another spot depending on how busy things are. More Read
