Reasons to Love Running in Philadelphia

This active city has the routes, events, and resources to keep runners coming back for more

Philadelphia Skyline reflected in Schuylkill River at sunset

In 2005, Temple University college student Liz Pagonis walked into the Philadelphia Runner store to shop for shoes. She’d been running for fitness and “to get around the city,” she says. She soon joined the store’s group runs, then began working the retail floor part-time. She soon became a full-time employee. Ten years later, she’s the store’s chief marketing officer.

Pagonis says joining group runs helped her connect to the city’s running community. With more than 50 running clubs to choose from, the community runs deep in Philly. “A lot of runners run with different clubs throughout the week,” says Pagonis. “There’s a thread that weaves us all together.”

Runners can retrace the steps of the nation’s founding fathers and visit numerous historical landmarks, run along the path bordering the Schuylkill River, or channel their inner Rocky and charge up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and past the bronze statue of the character himself.

Beginning runners and those looking to knock out fast mile splits will be happy to know that Philly has a predominantly flat landscape.

Schuylkill River Trail : It’s hard to picture running Philly without a nod to the “Rocky steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Pay homage with a trip up the 72 iconic stairs, then head for this multiuse recreational path that leads from City Center, just behind the museum, and parallels the river on both sides (Kelly Drive on the east and Martin Luther King Drive on the far west side). The path extends for more than 100 miles, connecting the city to the suburbs. “Eventually it’s going to connect to Delaware,” says Pagonis. An 8.4-mile loop, referred to by locals as the Loop, starts behind the museum.

Wissahickon Valley Park : Roughly 50 miles of trails wind through this urban park, but runners favor Forbidden Drive , named so because cars were banned from the packed-dirt and gravel road in the 1920s. The route hugs the Wissahickon Creek for 5.5 miles. “There are a ton of trails that you can connect to,” says Pagonis. “It’s in the woods, and you would never actually think you’re in the city. It’s just a really beautiful area.”

Center City to Old City : “You’re literally retracing the founding fathers’ footsteps,” says Pagonis. You could go see the Liberty Bell or run past Benjamin Franklin’s house.” Touring historic spots by foot, from Independence Hall to the President’s House (home to George Washington and John Adams when Philadelphia was the U.S. capital, from 1790 to 1800) gives you about a 5K run, says Pagonis.

More Options: The Boxers’ Trail, where Joe Frazier trained and young boxers still train today, winds through the city’s Fairmount Park. An annual Boxers’ Trail 5K is held each September. The John Hines National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum , or Tinicum for short, is “just a really quiet, beautiful part of Philadelphia that I think is very underutilized,” says Pagonis. “There’s not a lot of people down there, so you’re kind of alone with your thoughts. There’s good space to get in a solid run.”

Philadelphia Distance Run : Philly’s flat terrain is a recipe for success when it comes to higher-mileage races. Take the Philadelphia Distance Run, a half-marathon held in usually ideal temperatures each September. “At least six different half marathon world records have been set at the Philadelphia Distance Run,” says Pagonis. This event was among the first to offer elite nonbinary prize money, she adds.

Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run: With 35,000 runners taking part, Broad Street is the largest ten-miler in the country and has a lottery to get in. The course runs from north to south, “right through the heart of the city,” says Pagonis, and ends in the Navy Yard, which is the southernmost point of Broad Street.

Rocky Run 5K, 10-Mile, and 13.1 combined “Italian Stallion” challenge: Each November, runners toe the starting line in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a Rocky-themed 5K that starts at 7 a.m., or a ten-miler that starts at 8 a.m. Those who run the second race after completing the first earn a special “Italian Stallion” medal and bragging rights for having completed 13.1 miles in this fun and festive event.

More Options: The Philly 10K runs through the South Philly streets is what Pagonis calls “a local favorite.” Bands, vendors, and, some years, specialty beer brewed just for the event make the fast-and-flat course a party. The Philadelphia BMW Love Run Half Marathon takes place each March with a course that passes by many of the city’s historic landmarks. The Loop race has taken place on the 8.4 miles of the Schuylkill River Trail since 1972.

Black Girls Run! : This 9,000-women-strong Facebook group has had a presence in Philadelphia since 2013. Its mission is twofold: encourage African American women to be active, and lower the percentage of chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Queer Run : Established in 2022 to create safe spaces for LGBTQIIA+ runners of all paces, this group hosts three free weekly runs.

Endorphins Running : The local chapter of this national running community hosts group runs on Mondays to start the week off right. The group also meets one or two other days a week.

Students Run Philly Style : This group aims to transform students’ lives through running and mentorship, delivering positive outcomes from boosting GPAs to increasing graduation rates for program participants.

New Balance Philadelphia : Head to 1615 Walnut Street in the Center City West neighborhood, known for its upscale shops and walkability.

Philadelphia Runner : This independent and locally owned running store has locations in Center City, University City, Glen Mills, and Manayunk. The shop pride itself on personalized, professional fittings of running and walking shoes as well as sports bras. Bryn Mawr Running Company : All of this shop’s locations—in Bryn Mawr and Westchester, plus sister stores in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware—offer personalized fittings and a rewards program. The Philadelphia-area stores also host group runs.

Independent since 1906,  New Balance  empowers people through sport and craftsmanship to create positive change in communities around the world.

An aerial view of the town of Bad Ischl. A river flows through the city, and a bridge arches over the river to connect both sides.

A guide to Bad Ischl, the Alps' first European Capital of Culture

Sitting between baroque Salzburg and Austria’s alps, Bad Ischl, the 2024 European Capital of Culture combines the appeal of both.

Every summer day at 6am, 19th-century empress Sisi left her holiday hunting lodge in the Austrian resort of Bad Ischl to hike up Jainzen, the forested mountain looming just behind. The average ascent is around an hour, but they say it took the tall, tattooed wife of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I just 40 minutes to reach the peak.

With the spare time, she might ride one of her 50 horses, exercise on wooden machines she designed for her home gym, scoff violet pastries or smoke in her lavish gardens. Over a century since Sisi’s death, this town east of Salzburg remains a summer playground among wellness enthusiasts and anyone with two poles to hike with.

It’s a gateway to the Alpine lakes and mountains of Salzkammergut , a region whose name translates to ‘salt domain’, a nod to a local salt-mining tradition that dates back 7,000 years. It’s partly thanks to this history and pastoral charm that the entire region was anointed one of three 2024 European Capitals of Culture, with Bad Ischl the banner town — the first rural, Alpine destination to wear the mantle.

An exterior view of an old European cafe which is painted a coral red, with ornate gold window finishings and red floral arrangements on each window front

In the centre, Zauner Café serves glossy iced gateaux, steps from the villa where 19th-century composer Anton Bruckner penned his symphonies. A 15th-century church steeple still presides over the cobbled square, lined with lederhosen shops. However, this year, a defunct brewery is coming back to life as a gallery for Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto, who creates mosaics in salt, and contemporary weavers are reinvigorating a textile mill in Ebensee, 20 minutes away by car, spinning old tales into new art. Some of the 150 or so projects in the calendar are likely to become permanent, like the takeover of the former restaurant at Bad Ischl station by star chef Christoph Krauli Held.

The other forgotten attraction to be revived for the festivities is the vintage cog Schafberg Railway . At just over 3.5 miles in length, the line from Saint Wolfgang, another village in the region, heads around 4,000ft up Schafberg mountain. From its peak, the landscape unfurls to the hazy horizon: Bad Ischl to the east, the white-capped Alps to the south and, all around, the region’s 76 glacial lakes, pure and sapphire-blue.

Austrians head to these lakes to experience clean living — and white-tablecloth dining from another era. In St Wolfgang, where some women still wear dirndls when grocery shopping, the top table is lakeside at Landhaus zu Appesbach : opt for the venison, served with brioche dumplings and Burgundermacher pinot. Walk the meal off around the village, where a 12th-century church attracts Catholics. A different sort of pilgrim will head for the shore to swim by moonlight, perhaps rewarding themselves with small-batch gin from a 24-hour vending machine next to See-Distillerie .

A white tablecloth covered table in a well-lit restaurant with intricate dishes and a long stem wine glass at each tableplace.

Visitors are often surprised by modern anachronisms like the gin machine. Another one can be found on tiny Fuschlsee, the next lake over, where the rambling 600-year-old Schloss Fuschl castle has been nipped and tucked into a suave Rosewood hotel , opening in May.

Locals cram into the next-door fishery for plates of wood-smoked char supplied by the lake’s sole licensed fisherman; those in the know hit the shop before the 6pm closing to stock up for a sunset picnic. Others hop on wooden water taxis for the slow, silent drift to Fuschl town and scramble up mountains such as Ellmaustein or steeper Schober to watch the view reinvent itself in golds and pinks.

A 20-minute drive away is the new Kulmspitz observation tower high above Mondsee. A drive around this lake distills the region to its essential ingredients: gingerbread cottages, pilgrimage chapels, misty waterfalls and, at Schwarzindien, a warm swimming cove to bathe in. If that’s not sufficiently cultural, Bad Ischl is always less than an hour’s drive away — though Sisi would have walked it, of course.

These Are The Worst Adventure Tourism Disasters

Posted: July 5, 2023 | Last updated: July 5, 2023

For as long as there have been people, there have been the adventurous types. You know, the individuals that will push things closer and closer to the edge to get their kicks. These are the kinds of people that climb mountains, trek to the poles and undertake all manner of outlandish expeditions. But with advances in technology, and an increasing number of super rich people with oodles of disposable income, entry into the exclusive club of explorers has been easier to come by. Travel agents can book you a helicopter that can drop you on the Antarctic peninsula, you can get a flight to the depths of the Himalayas and off-road adventurers edge ever closer to active volcanoes around the world. But despite the easy access, trips like this remain a risk and the dangers of such outlandish travel were plain to see when the OceanGate Titan submarine went missing earlier this month. But that disaster was the latest in a long line of mishaps that have befallen some of the most outlandish tourist destinations. Here are ten other adventurous trips that have been hit with disaster.

The OceanGate Titan imploded while visiting the wreck of the Titanic.

If there’s one thing rich people love, it’s taking on an outlandish adventure. Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson is one such person. He’s taken to space with his Virgin Galactic project, crossed the English Channel in an amphibious car and attempted to circumnavigate the globe in a hot air balloon. In 1998, Branson undertook his ‘round-the-world flight with teammates Steve Fossett and Per Lindstrand. However, the three were forced into the jaws of danger when the fabric in their balloon, called The Global Challenger, ripped apart ten miles off the coast of Hawaii. They were soon rescued and abandoned the trip.

Around The World Adventure

If you want to explore somewhere that remains untouched by humanity, the extremes of our planet are a good place to start. Regions in the Arctic offer a chance to explore untouched landscapes, pristine oceans and come face to face with wildlife you might normally never see (or want to). But they’re also harsh environments that can bite back at any moment. British polar explorer Hannah McKeand found that out when her attempted trip to the North Pole was cut short when the helicopter that was due to fly her and her crew to a remote Arctic island crashed and marooned all on board. All four people on the helicopter survived the ordeal.

Arctic Exploration

Disasters don’t just strike in far flung locations, they can also arise much closer to home. Earlier this year, upstate New York was rocked after an underground cave tour went horribly wrong. A boat touring an underground stretch of the Erie Canal capsized. The trip through the Lockport Cave saw 28 passengers and one crew member fall from the boat when it overturned, with 11 people needing medical treatment and one man dying after the incident, CNN reports.

Disasters Close To Home

“Because it is there” was the reason given by British climber George Mallory when he thought about why anyone would want to climb Mount Everest. He died on his third attempt to climb the world’s tallest mountain. In the years since, more than 6,000 people have summited the mountain in Nepal, with more than 300 people having died attempting the feat. So far, 2023 is proving to be the deadliest year on record for climbers on the mountain. In the 2023 season, which ended in May, 17 climbers lost their lives on the 29,000-foot mountain.

Climbing To Calamity

But people preparing to hike the world’s tallest peak must be aware of the risks they’re facing, right? Tourists hopping into a helicopter to see the Grand Canyon, on the other hand, might not. In 2018, a helicopter touring the Grand Canyon crashed, killing the five British tourists onboard. In the years following the incident, investigators uncovered the cause of the crash was due to “tailwinds, potential downdrafts and turbulence.” It also occurred in an area of the canyon where “air tours aren’t as highly regulated,” local news reported.

Canyon Crashes

The only cruise I’d consider taking would be one to the Antarctic Peninsula. But the harsh landscapes and icy waters around the South Pole are unforgiving, which forced the U.S. Coast Guard to investigate tour operators in the region. According to The Washington Post, authorities stepped in after a spate of deaths in Antarctica. According to the site, four U.S. citizens died on trips to the South Pole, including two that were killed when an inflatable vessel they were riding in capsized.

Into Cold Water

Most people that attempt a round-the-world adventure have been planning the trip for years. They’ve assembled a team themselves, or are undertaking the mission solo in some outlandish record attempt. But a trip onboard a round-the-world clipper is meant to take away some of those stresses. However, these mammoth sailing trips aren’t free from issues, as they see amateur teams take on some of the most challenging oceans on Earth. For 25 years, the Clipper Round the World yacht race has taken mixed-ability crews and trained them to take on the oceans. But according to a report from The Guardian the voyages can be fatal, with at least three paying crew members dying on the Clipper adventure between 2015 and 2017.

Sailing Civilians

If you prefer staying on dry(ish) land, then you might be the kind of person that takes to the off-road trails each weekend. Vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler or Land Rover Defender are built to tackle mud, dust and all manner of rocky obstacles, but having the best kit doesn’t really take away the risk. In 2022, a team of adventurers learned this the hard way while off-roading in Colorado. According to NBC News, the team was traveling from the Yankee Boy Basin area in southwestern Colorado as part of an organized overlanding expedition when their Jeep Gladiator drifted off the edge. The driver and two passengers fell more than 200 feet to their deaths.

Heading Off-Road

Visiting an active volcano is a pretty intense way to witness the raw power of our planet. But while we have a much better understanding of volcanoes now than we did just 50 years ago, we can still be caught off-guard. That’s what happened in 2019 when New Zealand’s Whakaari, or White Island, volcano erupted while tourists were visiting the site. The volcano, off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island, is the most active in the region, and regularly hosted tourists that were either shipped in from the mainland or flown over on helicopter. When it erupted on December 9, 2019, 47 people were stuck on the island. Rescue crews spent two weeks recovering those who were injured and over a dozen who were killed.

Island Adventures

You might think that flying is a safer way to navigate the globe these days, as more than 100,000 flights take off from airports around the globe daily. But sadly, these journeys can be just as risky. In 2014, 17-year-old Haris Suleman was attempting to set a new record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe in a single-engine plane, as well as being the youngest person to make such a journey. However, just days before the conclusion of his trip, Time reported that his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
