Differences Between Vinyl & Full Custom Body Paint on an RV

by Karl Copenhaver 12/21/2018

When purchasing a new RV or trying to improve the looks of an older camper, one of the big questions you’ll encounter is whether you should use a gel-coat with vinyl graphics or a full custom body paint on the vehicle’s exterior. The following is a quick look at the differences between these two options to better help you decide what’s best for you and your RV:

The Differences Between Vinyl & Full Custom Body Paint on an RV

The basics of vinyl.

Vinyl graphics may be applied with the gel-coat in specific areas or they may be available as a full wrap that covers the entire surface of your RV. Vinyl provides great protection against scratches and nicks commonly caused by things like loose gravel kicked up from side roads. However, the primary benefit and leading reason many RV buyers choose vinyl over full custom body paint is that this option tends to be less expensive than a custom body paint job.

However, with that low costs also comes a lower lifespan. Even with proper waxing and general maintenance, vinyl decals and full vinyl coverings generally have about a five-year lifespan before owners will start to see signs of wear and tear like peeling, chipping, and blistering.

The Basics of Full Custom Body Paint

A full custom body paint project on an RV may take more time (vinyl coverings can generally be done in a week) and cost more, but many owners feel the results are well worth it. A professional body painting on an RV has a significantly longer lifespan so that not only will owners benefit from such an investment for longer than five years, but that investment will hold up and will boost the model’s resale value.

Furthermore, full paint jobs on RVs are low maintenance and need to be waxed just once a year with a simple soap and water routine in between. Plus, as long as a quality paint brand and composite was used, RV paint is much better equipped to withstand sun damage than vinyls which will often fade after just a couple years of use in direct sunlight.

However, one situation where vinyl coverings may be a better buy is if you plan on doing a lot of ‘boondocking’ in which the RV will frequently be brushed against branches and driven across bad road situations. This is because paint tends to be slightly less resistant against scratching than vinyl and so those who often go well off the beaten path may find themselves needing touch-up paint jobs more often than the owner of the vinyl-covered RV.

How Much Does it Cost to Paint an RV (RV Repainting Tips)

Looking good! Th ey won’t be saying that about you or your spouse’s physique. They will be saying that about your RV after its new paint job is complete. Part of RV maintenance is upgrading the pant job so your recreational vehicle looks good all the time you own it.

How Much Does it Cost to Paint an RV? If you are thinking of painting your over 30 foot RV, and want to use 2 to 4 colors, then you are looking at spending between $5,000 and $15,000. Your cost will depend on the type of paint, total length of your RV, where you get it painted and who does it for you.

To find out more about painting your RV and the cost involved just keep reading our article. You will find out about the different expenses and that the average cost is between $8,000 and $10,000.

  • Repainting tip #1: if you want to save on your RV paint costs, then you may want to reconsider using graphics. Graphics can boost the overall cost of painting your RV by a lot.
  • Repainting tip #2: One way to cut the cost of repainting your RV is to not stand out from the crowd. Custom paint jobs elevate the initial price, plus be more expensive to maintain.

RV Paint Job Cost Explained

full paint travel trailer

You may think that $5,000 to $15,000 is a lot to spend on repainting your RV. Especially when you compare that price to the overall cost of painting your traditional home.

But there is a lot of labor intensive work that needs to be done before the painters actually get to paint. The first step is the prep work. This is where surfaces get sanded, scraped, pressure washed, covering outlets, woodwork and other surfaces that should not be painted.

Then after all that is done, the surface needs to be primed. When the primer is dry, 3 to 5 coats of paint are applied on average. After the paint dries, a clear protective coat is applied to keep your paint job long lasting.

In addition, there may be extra costs like replacing the weatherstripping, vent covers o painting air conditioning covers, etc. If you are looking to use multiple colors, then those additional paints will add to the initial cost of the job. Custom graphic designs add up as well. These items are not included in the initial estimate you get for painting your RV.

  • Repainting tip #3:  Don’t let the paint shop fix any damaged portions of your RV. Shop the repairs around till you get a decent price

Cost to Paint a Class C RV

full paint travel trailer

To paint a class C RV may not be as costly as you would think. The good news is that it will be on the lower end of the cost range. Typically, without any frills, custom graphics or multi colors, you may still be looking to pay a professional about $5,000.

Again the factors and extra costs mentioned above will alter that price. If your class C RV is not that long then it is possible that you can get the job done for less than $5,000.

Then if you do some of the prep work, you can cut your paint costs by a fair amount of money. Don’t be surprised if you are given a base estimate for more than $5,000 either. Different painters charge different amounts for the same task.

  • Repainting tip #4: While you want your RV to look good and be a reflection of you, it is best not to go with a 5 color paint job. That many colors just adds thousands of dollars to your cost. You and your RV can still look good by going with a 2 color scheme and have a lot more money in the bank to spend on you.

Cost to Paint a Travel Trailer

full paint travel trailer

Getting exact figures is difficult. The cost to paint your travel trailer will depend on several factors. First, its length, then how many colors you want used and where you get it done.

The prep work involved will be the same as painting a full sized RV, so you can count on spending between $1,000 and $5,000 for a basic professional paint job. Custom graphics will cost you a lot more as will multiple color schemes.

However, if you are daring, you can paint your travel trailer yourself using high quality spray paint. The paint will still look like a professional did it if you take your time. Spray cans can go for as low as $4,00 per can but you may be lucky and find some on sale.

One person did their small travel trailer and it only cost a little time and well under $100. You can read about their work at this link . There are lots of websites on the internet telling you step by step how to paint your travel trailer yourself Here is the link to one such website.

  • Repainting tip #5; Do not use cheaper paint to save money. While this helps cut your initial painting costs, cheap paint does not last and you could be looking at paying more later on to fix he worn out paint. Top quality paint lasts longer and it protects your RV better.

Cost to Paint a Fiberglass RV

full paint travel trailer

On average expect to pay about $13,000 to paint your fiberglass RV. That is because painting fiberglass is a very labor intensive job that is more work that painting a regular aluminum sided RV.

If you want the job done well, your professional painter may have to grind the gel coat off till only the fiberglass was left. This can take over 50 man hours to get it done right.

Then after applying a strong coating, lots of sanding is required to get the surface nice and smooth. Both wet and dry sanding may be required to get the surface ready just for the primer.

After the primer is dry, you can paint. You can see why painting fiberglass can be very expensive if a professional does it. You may be able to save some money using a power sprayer and quality spray paint.

To learn how to paint your fiberglass RV here is one link that gives you some idea of the work involved. This second link provides you with step by step instructions on how to get it done right.

The work involved may convince you to pay a professional to do it for you.

  • Repainting tip #6: it may be worth you time and pocket book to skip repainting and replace your faded aluminum panels with fiberglass ones. This decision could save you about $5,000 alone.

Cost to Paint a Small RV

full paint travel trailer

Painting a smaller RV may not add up as much as painting a larger one but there is still the same prep work that needs to be done when you go to paint your smaller RV. The good news is that there won’t be the same amount of prep work.

Once you decide on how many colors you are going to use, the type of paint you want and depending on the condition of your small RV you are still looking to pay about $5,000 or a little less if you have professionals do it.

Again, the major part of the cost will be in preparing the RV, covering items you do not want painted and so on. If you are brave and confident enough, you can cut that cost dramatically by painting your small RV yourself. You may want a good winter project to keep you busy over the long colder months and this may be it.

Your biggest expense will be your time as you can find quality spray paint, masking tape and even patterns on sale or being sold at very low prices.

  • Repainting tip #7: One color of paint does not fade faster than another. Choose the colors you want without fear that they will disappear faster than those colors you do not like.

Cost to Paint an RV in Mexico (Where?)

If you are looking for a cheap painting alternative and you live or are vacationing near the Mexican border, you may want to take a trip to Puerto Penasco or San Felipe, Mexico.

Mexican labor and suppl;y costs are not as expensive as their American counterparts. That means you can get a very highly discounted price to paint your RV. The quality of the paint look may not be the same as you see in a showroom, but the paint holds up to years of travel wear and tear.

RV paint jobs can go for as little as $500 in Mexico and still look good.

  • Repainting tip #8: The sad news is that spending $8,000 to $15,000 on a new paint job will not add much value to your RV. Only rare occasions dos=es that happen. You may want to save the money and trade your RV in for a better looking model.

RV Painting Cost vs Wrapping RV Cost

Painting your RV makes your vehicle look great. There is no doubt about how good an RV looks after it has received a top notch paint job. But the costs involve are very prohibitive and can set you back the price of a good used car.

Wrapping your RV is a good alternative as wraps are easier to put on, there is less prep work to be done and it won’t take as long as the whole paint process does. Plus, wrapping costs are low with one price set at $12 per square foot.

If you have as small RV, you could pay as little as $1,000 or less to wrap it. In comparison, repainting the same RV may cost you between $3,000 and $5,000. For a class A RV, you can spend between $50,000 and $200,000 for a class A paint job., A wrap for the same RV costs as little as $6,500 or $8,500

You can get quotes for your RV at this link

Painting an RV Yourself

Painting your RV yourself is a very good and viable option. You can cut your costs to extremely low levels and keep that money you save for other more important items. Painting your RV will be a time consuming process due to the nature of the primer, sanding and paint.

You will also need a large stretch of good weather if you are doing the painting outside. We have already posted a couple of links earlier helping you do your own paint job. But here is another one to make sure you have the process down and can get the job done with ease.

How to Find RV Paint Shops Near Me

It shouldn’t be that difficult to find an RV paint shop near you. If you are out on the road, the managers of your RV park should have a list of top paint shops that are close to them.

If they don’t they may direct you to an RV parts and accessory store who would have such a list. Another way to find a good RV paint shop is to let your fingers do the walking.

The local yellow pages should have listings for some or you can use your computer keyboard and do an internet search. Last but not least, you could contact RV dealerships. Either they provide the service or they know who does.

Anyway you go, it is not that hard to find a professional company with a good reputation to paint your RV.

Some Final Words

Getting your RV repainted sounds like you need to take a second mortgage out on your traditional home to get the job done. Repainting an RV is second to taking care of your traditional home in terms of costs and painting.

If you do it right, you may be able to find the right paint contractor who will save you a little money throughout the painting process. One alternative would be to wrap your RV instead of painting which will save you thousands of dollars in costs.

Another would be to do the job yourself and save a bundle. But since repainting does not raise the value of your RV you could consider replacing the aluminum with fiberglass and save about 5Gs.

A final solution would be to just trade it in for a better model. You now know the costs of repainting your RV and the choice is yours to make.

Keystone RV Brands Add Full-Body Paint Options

A picture of Keystone's Montana shadow paint job

Keystone RV is responding to what the company stated is a consumer interest spike in full-body paint by adding more colorways and designs to two Keystone brands.

The manufacturer stated in addition to an “unprecedented demand” for the company’s fifth wheels, more buyers are upgrading their units. Consumers are opting for full-body paint twice as much compared with the past, Keystone stated.

The company’s Montana and Raptor brands will see additional contemporary paint colors. Montana’s new “Shadow” palette combines bright white with shades of taupe and gray, creating a lighter paint scheme than previously offered.

“Montana uses consumer feedback to drive product development and this is a result of a consumer ask,” Keystone RV General Manager Colin Dechant said. “Our new Shadow paint option reflects buyers’ desire for lighter and brighter design in both their coach’s interior and now, the exterior. In some ways, it is also an extension of the positive response we have seen to the lighter Modern Maple and Cottage White decors that were introduced in 2020.”

Keystone’s Raptor brand is responding to consumer interest in paint colors and bolder graphics within the toy hauler segment, the company stated.

“For toy hauler owners, the exterior of their RV is an expression of their adventurous approach to life,” , Keystone Raptor Product Manager Colin Clark said. “Paint is the ultimate extension of the opportunity for self-expression. Raptor’s new Charcoal and Electric Blue paint options crank up the excitement by incorporating elements from motorsports design that feel consistent with our owners’ full-throttle lifestyles.”

Full-body paint is an option for Keystone’s Montana, Raptor, Fuzion and Alpine brands. The Thor Industries division has a paint facility in Wakarusa, Indiana.

Can a Travel Trailer be painted?

You own a travel trailer that is in good overall condition, but it has an outdated paint job, aged colors, and/or a peeling exterior. How can you renew the look of your trailer while also adding value to your investment?

Painting a travel trailer is a great way to update the look of your trailer, as well as adding a layer of protection against the weather. This can be done to most or all exterior portions of your model.

Choosing to paint a trailer can have a lot of benefits in the long run, both on your trailer and your wallet. By taking care of a trailer’s paint job, you can lessen the amount of work required on the trailer and ensure it is road ready for all future adventures.

Can a travel trailer be painted? Yes, you can paint a travel trailer. Whether you have aluminum or fiberglass sides, they can be painted. You will want to make sure to prep your trailer the best that you can before to make your paint job last as long as possible.

Reasons to Paint a Trailer

There are a lot of reasons why an individual might want to paint the outside of their trailer, from personal preferences to protective coatings or a mixture of both. Whatever your reasons might be for having this done, it can be a wise investment in the future life of your travel trailer.

Many people do not have the means of keeping their trailer in an enclosed space such as a garage or an overhead awning. Because of this, the exterior paint becomes exposed to the elements, such as rain, heat and winter weather conditions. This can cause the outer surface of your trailer to deteriorate and age at a faster rate than normal. Preserving the paint job guarantees that the trailer is guarded from these elements and will hold up over a longer period of time.

A neglected paint job can also make your trailer look older than it actually is. This will cause it to look less valuable than it is worth, and reduces the resale value of your model. By updating the paint job and color schemes, your trailer will look more modern and pristine as compared to its previous state. Due to this, your trailer will increase in its value and will glean more in resale value when that time comes.

The Cost of Painting a Trailer

When making the decision to have your trailer painted, you will be presented with two options on accomplishing this task: take your trailer to a professional or attempt the job at home. There are positives and negatives to both options. Review businesses for quality assurance and assess your own abilities before making a decision on how to go about painting your trailer.

Having a professional repaint your trailer is a fast and easy method to achieve your desired look. Many professionals are able to do this for any type of trailer that is brought to them, and will have the proper setup required to get the job done effectively and efficiently. They are able to obtain the right paint types, as well as use quality materials throughout the project. However, this service can come at a pretty hefty cost. The estimated cost of painting a travel trailer lands anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000. The size of the model, paint quality and number of colors the owner selects will all affect the final price.

Doing it yourself requires a lot more elbow grease but will save you a significant chunk of money in the long run. This job could cost an individual anywhere from $500 on up, depending on the length of the trailer and the number of colors selected. Doing it yourself will also take much longer to do, and will require a location that is suitable for performing the task over an extended period of time.

Maintaining Your Trailer’s Paint Job After Painting

After you have had your trailer repainted, either professionally or personally, make sure that you are maintaining the paint job to reduce the amount of time required between the next servicing. Here are a few, easy steps that travel trailer owners can take to ensure that their paint job is protected and well cared for after completion.

  • Keep your Travel Trailer Out of the Sun – Constant sun exposure can have negative side effects on your trailer’s paint job. If possible, park your trailer in a place that is not in direct sunlight, such as in a trailer garage or under an awning. This may not be possible for everyone, so think of some alternatives, such as securely covering it with a tarp.
  • Avoid Parking Your Trailer Under a Tree – Parking your trailer under a tree may seem like a good idea in order to get your trailer out of the sun. However, trees tend to drop sap, leaves, and water droplets onto the top of your trailer, causing damage to the roof. Finding another location for your trailer, or covering it while parked under a tree, is the best solution for this problem.
  • Regularly Wash Your Trailer After Each Use – Dirt, bug splatters, and other things that are picked up on road trips can weaken the finish of your trailer’s exterior paint. Washing these off after every use gets rid of these so that they do not stay on the coat working against it. While on a trip, if you are traveling through many unpaved areas or through harsher weather than normal, you may want to wash your trailer off continually throughout the duration of the trip.
  • Be Careful Choosing Cleaning Products – Some cleaning products will deteriorate your paint job more than others, such as those containing acidic substances. Choose wisely when selecting what cleaning supplies to use on your trailer, and use proper cleaning techniques so as to not rub off the finish in certain areas.

Implementing these few steps will ensure that your travel trailer’s new paint job will stay at its best for as long as possible. It will also decrease the time required between servicing the exterior of the trailer. This will save its owner money in the long run.

Alternatives to Painting a Trailer

If the cost of getting your trailer professionally painted is too much or the idea of doing the job yourself seems like too much of an undertaking, there are some other options that are available to you. Polishing the existing paint job will enhance the shine and brilliance of the colors already present. While it may not eliminate some of the imperfections on the exterior surface, it can still make a significant difference and costs much less than an entire repaint.

Another option to consider is to get your trailer professionally wrapped. This process will cover the entirety of the travel trailer in a vinyl coating. Wrapping a trailer is typically less expensive than repainting a trailer. However, it must be done by a professional company that has the right materials and tools to get the job done correctly. Note that you will be charged per square foot of required vinyl. Wrapping a trailer will only be applicable on fiberglass sided units as units with corrugated siding have too many ridges to be wrapped.

Deciding to paint the exterior of your trailer will improve it’s value and curb appeal. There are multiple methods to achieve this new and improved look. Conduct some research to find out what method fits your trailer and your budget the best. You will have a brand new looking trailer in no time!

Elgin courier-news | folk art painting of elgin for america’s 250th anniversary to be converted into puzzle.

Elgin plans to commission folk artist Eric Dowdle to create an art piece depicting the city that will be part of a national project being done in conjunction with America's 250th anniversary in 2026. The artwork will be turned into a puzzle that will be made available for purchase. (Dowdle Folk Art)

Elgin is going to be part of a nationally known folk artist’s project honoring America’s 250th birthday.

Eric Dowdle is planning a tour called “Land That I Love” in which he’ll visit different cities to create artwork that will be used for the country’s milestone anniversary in 2026.

One of those towns will be Elgin. The Elgin City Council voted 7-2 last week to spend $120,000 for the artwork, which will be turned into a puzzle available for purchase. A final contract vote will be taken in May.

Dowdle’s company contacted the city to propose that it be part of the project, said Amanda Harris, director of cultural arts and special events.

“We met with his representatives via Zoom. They walked us through their program and what it looks like,” Harris said. “We were super impressed by the way Eric approaches art and community.”

Dowdle’s work focuses on folk art, history and community. He visits the town and spends time with its residents to really learn about a place, she said.

“He’s not just going to go online and Google it. He has a real immersion approach,” she said. “We know Elgin and how Elgin feels about its history and the changes it has had here. We felt this was a great way to celebrate our history. It seemed authentic.”

Elgin will commission Dowdle to create the piece, which will be a standalone project included in the national exhibit, Harris said. It will also be made into a 500- to 1,000-piece puzzle, which will be available for purchase, she said.

The city’s cost is $120,000, which includes the artist’s fee, puzzle fabrication and an interactive puzzle wall. Revenue from puzzle sales and community partners or sponsors could recoup between 30% to 40% of the total expense, Harris said.

The interactive puzzle wall, measuring 8 feet by 10 feet, will be on display following an unveiling event, she said.

Dowdle has more than 20 years of experience over which he has produced more than 400 original works of art. He has sold more than 30 million puzzles worldwide, according to his website.

He and his work have been featured on the Discovery Network and on “The Piece Maker” television show, which streams on HBO Max. He partnered with Disney in 2019 to create 14 original folk art pieces depicting Disney scenes.

Elgin is the first city to agree to be part of the tour, which Harris said she thinks will help showcase the community’s cultural richness and artistic vibrancy.

Councilwoman Carol Rauschenberger was not enthusiastic about the idea and voted against it.

“He does this sort of interesting folk art, but I feel like it’s not as artistic as it is commercial,” she said. “For example, one of his famous paintings is the inside of a Costco because Costco sells his artwork puzzles.”

Councilwoman Tish Powell also voted no.

“If I’m going to spend this much money, I don’t want it to be on a puzzle. I don’t even know how many people actually do puzzles nowadays,” Powell said. “I would rather see us invest in more tangible artwork in our downtown and in some of the areas we’ve identified. I think that would be a better use of the funding.”

But Councilman Corey Dixon, whose family does do puzzles, sees it as a piece of memorabilia.

“I think it gains value over time,” he said, adding that the city would make some of the cost back.

After 70 Years, Si Lewen’s Wrenching ‘Parade’ Marches On

This sequence of 63 bravura antiwar drawings hasn’t been shown in New York in nearly seven decades but they’re up again now, thanks to Art Spiegelman.

A sequence of five black-and-white drawings depicting marching soldiers, with their bayonets and beating drums.

By Will Heinrich

At the very beginning of Si Lewen’s “The Parade,” the series of untitled antiwar works on artist’s board that forms the pulsing heart of a new exhibition curated by the cartoonist Art Spiegelman, four sketchy, ecstatic boys and girls stride into the endless possibility of unmarked white gesso. In the second panel, a family leaning out their window catches sight of someone waving a flag.

The flag itself is also faint and white, but the family is surrounded by an ominous black shadow. And as that single flag turns into a parade, and the parade acquires rifles, swords, black banners and German helmets, Lewen’s painting and drawing — he made “The Parade” around 1950 with a mix of crayon, ink, paint and graphite — gets denser and darker.

As Spiegelman notes, the work is full of allusions. There’s a dog from “Guernica” and direct quotations from the notably antiwar German artists Otto Dix and George Grosz. “The Parade” has been exhibited in galleries, projected in a theater, and published as a book, each time in a slightly different edit, though this particular set of 63 images, hung around James Cohan Gallery in a single narrative line, is the first appearance of the originals in New York in nearly 70 years. And just about every one of those 63 bears examining as an art work in its own right.

But one of the chief glories of the piece overall is seeing what happens to painting styles meant to be looked into when they’re dropped into a cinematic sequence that moves inexorably from left to right. Jagged rows of bayonets may borrow from Cubism’s fractured perspective, but here they chiefly mean clamor and noise. As the boys from the first panel become teenage cannon fodder and the dogs of war howl, a Jackson Pollock-style splatter is a jazzy nod to the art of the day, but also reads unmistakably as blood left behind by a firing squad.

Whether it’s a movie, a symphony, a story, or a line of small paintings, part of the appeal of a narrative is the way it mimics the sequence of moments and days to which we’re all subject even as it offers a temporary respite from them. The exhilarating sense of motion in “The Parade” easily keeps Lewen’s beautiful drawing balanced against his disturbing content. A dismembered woman in a wheelbarrow may upset you, or a graphic line of goose-stepping legs might look more stylish and striking than you’d care to admit. But before you feel any real dissonance, you’re on to the next picture.

Lewen’s own life may have destined him to this approach. A Polish Jew raised in Germany, he was already a fan of movies and altarpiece polyptychs when, at 13, he was given a copy of “Passionate Journey” (published multiple times since 1919) by Frans Masereel, the Belgian woodcut artist who pioneered the form he called “novels without words.” The same year, Lewen, an atheist, made a series of biblical watercolors in lieu of a bar mitzvah. His family made it to New York in 1935, but after enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942, he spent the war in Europe, advising Nazi soldiers to surrender from a sound truck at the front, and saw Buchenwald shortly after it was liberated. Back in New York, he forged a successful painting career with brightly colored, Cubist-inflected scenes, a few of which are on display here — but he couldn’t get over his memories of combat and the death camp, and he finally had to put them in order.
