How to Get Travel Scholarships, Grants, Fellowships & More

by GoAbroad Writing Team October 17, 2022

facebook icon

Money can’t buy you love, but it CAN buy you international plane tickets. So…Love shmove!

Let’s get real for a sec. Travel ain’t free and it certainly ain’t (always) cheap. If you want to see the world—I mean really see it—you’re gonna have to spend some $$$. In a perfect world, international airfare wouldn’t drive us to Google “how much will my kidney sell for?” And that’s WITH all the amazing flight deal hacks !

gif, Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids, help me Im poor

Us, once we see the cost of our dream program abroad.

So, how are we, the not-Beyonce’s of the world, supposed to afford to study, intern, volunteer, or teach abroad? How do we go from being trifling good-for-nothing type of brothers to a baller?

Travel. Scholarships. Grants. Fellowships.

That’s right, now you can pay your bills and now we DEFINITELY can chill. None of this maxing out cards and acting dumb when the bill comes. Nah-uh. We’re not playing Bey like that. You can apply for scholarships to travel abroad—no joke.

Don’t believe me? Watch the video and read the transcript below. Our travel experts lay out exactly how you can use travel grants, fellowships, and scholarships to make ALLLLLL your adventures come to life.

Video transcript

The only thing more stressful than packing four months of junk into a suitcase is applying for travel scholarships. Deadlines, eligibility factors, essays—trying to impress someone enough in 500 words or less so that they will literally help fund your dreams is a daunting experience.

DON’T WORRY. WE GOT YOU.

Let’s chat SCHOLARSHIPS, y’all! That’s right, you can get FREE MONEY to study, volunteer, intern, get your TEFL certificate, etc.

One more time: Free. Money.

We’re here to tell you about how GoAbroad can help you find travel scholarships to make all your travel dreams come true. So if you have one, wait, I promise it’ll come true! That’s why we put this how-to video together to help you find the right student travel scholarships, get your application game up to snuff, and watch that free money come rollin’ on in.

What kinds of travel fellowships, scholarships, & grants are there?

There’s academic scholarships to travel abroad , which is great if you love report cards—for you smarties out there!

Athletic scholarships for travel are a slam dunk! Now you don’t have to be a pro, but if you’re really good and play a sport in college this might be the right scholarship for you.

Is your ethnicity or gender under-represented in travel? Demographic scholarships to travel abroad are for you.

Destination based student travel scholarships —different countries have different scholarships for international students. [So be sure to check those out]

Find a scholarship based on your field of study. [AKA— major-specific travel scholarships for college students. ]

Do you receive the Pell Grant or other financial aid? Then, apply for need-based travel scholarships .

OR, your alma mater could hook you up with university-specific scholarships to travel abroad . And to help undergraduate students afford to take on unpaid or underpaid summer internships, study abroad programs, or service trips abroad, or even summer research. There’s just heaps of options! I could go on and on and on all day.

Stop doodling and dreaming, and start doing! Seriously, those applications won’t finish themselves.

Where can I find travel scholarships for college students?

We’re glad you asked! We’ve got a handy dandy little thing over at GoAbroad called a “ Scholarships Directory .” This is your go-to for all things travel scholarships! Again: Go. Abroad. Scholarships directory. Filter your search by experience to find great opportunities across the web, all in one place.

PRO TIP: For those of you still in school, if you haven’t popped by your international programs or financial aid offices, you better make an appointment! It’s right there, it’s easy to use, they’ll be there with you throughout the whole process and you’ll be on your way to your next adventure in no time.

How do I apply for travel grants, fellowships, & scholarships without wasting my time?

Another great question, class! Very nice! My mother’s always told me that if you’re not nervous about a job interview, then you probably don’t really care about the job. I think the same thing stands true for a lot of other things as well. [**Like applying for scholarships to travel abroad.]

Here are a few insider tips so that you don’t waste your time, and, you’re ultimately getting the most bang for your buck! (Buck for your bang???—Whatever, here’s how to kick ASS at scholarship apps.)

Get organized! Put everything in one place—Google drive, a spreadsheet, or an *actual* folder with printed materials. [Whatever your style is, just make sure you have everything together and easy to find.]

DUE. DATES. DO MATTER. They do, do, do, okay? So mark all your due dates and create reminders for them one or two weeks out. You don’t want to be scrambling to get everything together last minute. Trust me, it’s not enjoyable.

Ask for letters of recommendation. Now this could be something from your past boss or your teacher. Some scholarships will require letters of recommendation. Start this process early to give recommenders plenty of time to craft a meaningful letter for you. [Plus, if one falls through, you’ll want time to queue up a backup!]

person with parka and backpack looking at departures board

Next stop: Adventure abroad!

Craft a KILLER application essay. Yes, you have to write. This is like, 90% of the application, right? You’ll need to check the specifics of each prompt. Some might be looking for a personal narrative, some might want you to answer a very specific question or speak to a current event or major world issue. In order to get the dough you gotta put in the time.

  • Understand your goals — ask yourself why this experience is important, what will you bring to the table, and what do you expect to take away from the experience.
  • Outline your essay —but like, seriously. Even if it starts only as “Intro, body, and conclusion,” at least you need to know where you’re headed so you don’t end up submitting a two-page ramble about nothing.
  • Then you want to edit, edit, edit.
  • Edit again, edit again, and edit AGAIN. There’s going to be no typos for you. You want to look professional and you want to look smart.
  • Send your draft to someone you trust to give you feedback and edit it, again. Like your mom, or your English teacher.
  • ONE LAST TIME. Review submissions requirements so you know you’re following all the directions and submitting your essay in the correct format.

Submit all of your materials. (Early, you pro!) and await your fate! Good luck! Now, waiting for your acceptance letters can be anxiety inducing. So, check with your scholarship offices about when you can expect to hear a decision by, and keep yourself as busy as you can while you’re waiting.

Are travel fellowships worth all the fuss?

PFFFT. Is it worth it? Are overpriced avocados low-key the worst? Is Beyonce an angel we don’t deserve? Could your brow game be even stronger? YAS. Of course travel scholarships are worth it.

They make meaningful travel that much more affordable by helping you cover the pesky costs of things like: round trip flights, housing, FOOOOOD, your new backpack. That stuff adds up quick. It’s a really great resource for students to take advantage of because it really opens up a whole world of opportunities.

You know, that way you can save your hard-earned cash for fun stuff! Like weekend trips with new friends! Or that visit to the Van Gogh museum! You might even fall in love with a country and decide to move there permanently. Hey! That’s how I ended up here in Namibia. Apply to travel scholarships for college students so you can get out there and make all this fun, and life-changing stuff happen.

Next...next steps to scoring free money for travel

gif, rihanna, money sign with hands

Ri-ri knows you if you want that $$$, you better werk.

Listen, we were all pretty clear about what you’ve got to do in order to get that sweet, sweet cash money, but we’ve got some more resources for you either way.

A travel grant can help to cover the costs of traveling while you study abroad or attend a clinical placement in the United Kingdom.

This section explains how to apply for travel grants for students, the eligibility criteria, and which travel expenses forms you need to use.

What Can You Get from Travel Grants UK?

Undergraduate travel grants can cover some of the ‘reasonable’ costs incurred when studying abroad (e.g. trips to and from an overseas university).

Full-time students meeting UK residence rules, also need to be:

  • Studying outside the United Kingdom as part of your course (or through one of the Erasmus study or work placements).
  • A medical or dental student who is either studying abroad or attending a clinical placement in the United Kingdom.

Note : You do not need to pay back undergraduate travel grants. But, there are rules on eligibility and some of the procedures differ for students from Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

The actual amount you can get from a travel grant depends on the total amount of household income you have.

Household income would include your own (if you have one) along with that of your parents, guardians, spouse, or partner (if you are living with them). But, it would not include the income of any other family members that you may be living with.

You would be expected to keep your travel costs to a ‘reasonable’ level by using a cheap and practical method of transport (e.g. taking a bus instead of a taxi).

If You are Studying Outside the UK

Undergraduate students who are studying a full academic year abroad, would be able to apply for:

  • A maximum of three (3) return journeys between the overseas institution and their home.
  • Financial help to cover some of the essential expenses (e.g. medical insurance, travel visas).

If you are a single parent, you may also be able to apply for help with the travel costs for taking your children with you.

Medical or Dental Students on Clinical Placements

Travel grants also cover the cost of doing a clinical placement in the United Kingdom. So, you would be able to claim some of the travel costs incurred when traveling between your home and the placement (i.e. the location of the hospital or facility).

Important : The student needs to pay the first £303 of travel costs. Furthermore, travel grants reduce by £1 for each £8.73 of household income above £39,796.

Eligibility Criteria for Travel Grants

You will not qualify for these kinds of travel grants for students unless your permanent home address is located in England.

If You Study Abroad

You must be attending an overseas institution for a minimum of half of each academic term (can be compulsory or optional) if you are studying abroad.

You may also qualify for a travel grant if you are placed on one of the Erasmus studies or work placements. But, other types of work placements will not count.

Note : The short YouTube video explains more about the Erasmus+ programme for students who want to study in Europe.

Doing Clinical Placements

It needs to be an essential part of your medical or dental course if you are doing a clinical placement in United Kingdom.

But, if you are eligible for either the awards from the Department of Health or means-tested bursaries , you will not qualify for a travel grant.

Getting student finance based on your household income (e.g. a Maintenance Loan or Maintenance Grant) means you will be able to complete a travel grant application.

How to Apply for a Travel Grant

  • Use your student finance account to start the application process. You will need to set up an account if not.
  • Once you have done that, Student Finance England (SFE) will send you a course abroad form.
  • Fill in the course abroad form and return it to SFE. If you qualify they will then send you a travel grant form.

You need to keep all travel receipts for the expenses that you will be applying for (so you can send photocopies). Once approved, SFE will pay the money straight into your bank account.

What if you are attending a clinical placement in the United Kingdom? If so, you should apply for student finance for clinical study. SFE will send you a travel grant form if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Note : Another section explains how higher education students may qualify for extra money to pay for college or fund their university term.

Travel Grant (Student Finance England)

Who qualifies.

  • SFE funded students may be eligible if they’re studying a full-time higher-education course and getting student finance that depends on their household income

EU students funded by Student Finance Services are not able to apply for the Travel Grant

Students must also be:

  • Attending an overseas University or College for at least 50% of any academic term as an integral part of their course
  • Attending a hospital or other premises in the UK as an integral part of their medical or dental course. Students who are eligible to apply for bursaries/awards from the Department of Health are not eligible to apply for a travel grant

The Travel Grant is not available to students on a work placement abroad unless the student is on the Erasmus+ scheme and is undertaking study, work, or combined work and study periods as part of their course

What Can I Get?

The amount that you can get will depend on your household income. The first £303 of your travel costs are disregarded i.e. you will need to cover the cost of these via other means. Your travel grant will be reduced by £1 for each £8.73 of household income over £39,796.

We know this is a bit difficult to understand, so we've broken down an example for you in the below table

What can I claim for?

 If eligible:

  •  Up to three return journeys between the UK and your overseas institution you are studying at during a full academic year abroad
  • The cost of a child/children’s fare between the UK and the overseas institution if it’s necessary for a lone parent who’s also a student to take them abroad
  • Mandatory medical insurance, visas and medical expenses for the purpose of studying abroad
  • A rate of 24p per mile if you have to travel by car
  • Any travel costs associated with clinical training where attendance at a hospital or other premises is necessary.  Students who are eligible to apply for bursaries/awards from the Department of Health are not eligible to apply for a travel grant

How do I apply?

Once you have applied to SFE indicating that you’ll be studying abroad or clinical work placement for at least 50% of a term, you can apply for a Travel Grant.

Once your Student Finance application has been approved, you should automatically be sent the correct forms to complete. If not, please call SFE on 0300 100 0607 to request a Travel Abroad Expenses Form.

If you are unable to regularly call SFE from your Study Abroad location, we can contact them on your behalf. To do this, please ensure that you have set up Consent to Share on your account

Studying abroad requires students to budget for a range of costs including flights, visa and insurance. The cost of living also differs from country to country and there are some funding opportunities for students studying or working overseas, including automatic and means tested bursaries and destination based scholarships.

All exchange students are responsible for paying for their own accommodation, travel, insurance, visa costs (if applicable) and all other living expenses whilst studying or working abroad and so budgeting in advance is crucial.

Global Opportunities

What funding is available.

Funding your period abroad is important to all students and requires some careful planning. Luckily, there are lots of funding opportunities available to students, both from the University of Liverpool and from other organisations.

The information provided on this page is accurate for funding to be provided to students going abroad in 2024/25.

If you are a student who is currently on a Global Opportunity, please check the canvas page to recap all funding information. Students applying to take part in a summer 2024 Global Opportunity should join our MS Teams to recap the funding available for each specific programme and check the search tool to get further information on each opportunity and eligibility for funding

Participating in a Global Opportunity means you need consider a number of costs. Here are the most common, but note that this is not an exhaustive list:

  • Living Costs: these will vary from country to country and even from city to city in the same country. Our Search Tool has estimated living costs for each partner, based on the information they have provided. These estimated living costs will include, as a minimum, accommodation and food
  • Travel: You'll need to consider the cost of travelling to your host university, whether by boat, train, bus or plane. Travel costs can be anywhere between £200 and £1800
  • Visas: For many of our host countries, depending on the length of your mobility, you'll need a visa. Visas costs can range anywhere from £80 through to £500 and might involve paying for third-party services (e.g. translating documents)
  • Additional Fees: Many universities will charge some additional fees, most often in the form of compulsory health insurance (for Australia and New Zealand, a special type of health insurance is a visa requirement). These additional costs can have a very wide range, from £50 to £600
  • Exploring your new home: When you're living abroad, you'll want to explore! So don't forget to factor in the cost of local travel (this will always be more than you think!). It's impossible for us to give an idea of how much this will be, as it will be down to you to decide how much and how far you want to explore!

Although the above can seem a little bit daunting, there's lots of additional financial help via Student Loans, the University and the Turing Scheme to helo with the costs of going abroad. Check out the other sections below to find out more or attend one of our Budgeting Basics  sessions to help you plan your finances whilst abroad.

Travel Insurance

The University of Liverpool provides all students with free travel insurance that covers you in your host country. It will cover you for:

  • Two weeks before your study abroad
  • The duration of your study abroad
  • Two weeks after your study abroad

This is the same policy that is used to cover University staff when they travel for business purposes, and thus is a very comprehensive policy.

Tuition fees

  • For students undertaking one semester abroad, your tuition fee remains the same
  • Home/EU student students undertaking a year abroad will pay a tuition fee of £1,385 (you can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan as normal to cover this)
  • International students undertaking a year abroad will pay 50% of your normal tuition fee
  • You do  not  pay tuition fees to the Host University with the exception of some summer programmes

Student Finance Maintenance Loan

  • You will still be eligible to apply for a maintenance loan and should, as minimum, receive the same amount you are currently receiving
  • For students studying abroad, the amount of loan available may be slightly higher, see the  Student Finance pages  for the latest amounts
  • You'll still be eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan

Medicine students, Veterinary Medicine students and any students have already received 4 years of Student Finance funding (e.g. due to suspending studies) and who are intending to take the Year in China (whether as a the 2nd year or Final year option) should check directly with Student Finance that they will be eligible to receive an additional year's funding for their time in China.

Student Finance Travel Grant

Student Finance England offers means tested travel grants for students studying abroad as part of their course. For full details see the  Travel Grants page  but in summary, you can apply for funding towards:

  • Up to 3 return flights from the UK to your Host Country
  • Visas, medical insurance and essential expenditure
  • You would need to pay the first £303 towards the above costs

Note that students who will receive the Turing funding, cannot apply for the Student Finance Travel Grant.

Students not funded by Student Finance England should visit the page for their relevant funding body:

  • Student Finance Scotland
  • Student Finance Wales
  • Student Finance Northern Ireland

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and donors to the University, we're able to provide funding to all students participating in one of our central Global Opportunity programmes. Students will receive either a Go Abroad Grant, or funding from the Turing scheme  (not both) .  A decision will be made on  which  funding  you receive  closer to your departure date, as we don’t yet have confirmed funding  amounts  from the Turing schem e.

Our awards are means-tested and awarded as follows:

  • Students with a household income of £25,000 and under who also meet the University's WP Flag criteria: £1,000
  • Students with a household income of £25,000 and under who don't meet the University's WP Flag criteria: £750
  • Students with a household income of between £25,001 and £35,000: £500
  • All other students: £250

It's important to note that you can only receive the Liverpool Go Abroad Grant once during your studies with us, regardless of how many types of programme you participate in

In addition to the Liverpool Go Abroad Grant or Turing funding, students participating in a Global Opportunity can apply for a BUTEX scholarship.  The University of Liverpool is a member of BUTEX, which aims to promote study abroad between the UK and non-EU universities. Any Liverpool student participating in a Global Opportunity can apply for one of the £500 scholarships that BUTEX make available. To find out how to apply, visit the  BUTEX website .

Turing funding provides a weekly or monthly living costs grant (depending on the length of your Global Opportunity) and students from households with an income of under £25,000 (along with certain other criteria) will also receive funding towards their travel costs.

Students can not apply directly for Turing funding. We (UoL) apply for funding, then depending on how much we receive, we will contact all eligible students (this is likely to be late-202 4 ).

If you are awarded Turing funding, you won't be eligible for a Liverpool Go Abroad Grant or travel costs assistance from Student Finance (see above).

For AY 2024/25 the University of Liverpool have agreed to underwrite Turing Funding for WP students meaning that if the University if unsuccessful in its bid for funding WP students will still receive the equivalent Turing Funding from the University. In 2023/24 eligible students were awarded at least £335 per month. As we cannot guarantee who will receive Turing funding at this point, we suggest planning to receive the Liverpool Go Abroad Grant instead. For more information on Turing, see  https://www.turing-scheme.org.uk/about/information-for-participants/

Financial information

Tuition fees.

No tuition fees are payable to the overseas university.  Some University have additional fees or standard charges which all students are required to pay. These may include things such as health and counselling services, students' union, student ID card, academic departmental fees. This will be outlined to you by the host university and you are required to pay them. If you have any queries about any additional fees, then check with the host university.

You continue to pay tuition fees to Sheffield only. UK/EU undergraduate students studying overseas in will pay   reduced tuition fees during the year abroad.

International students will also pay reduced fees whilst abroad: refer to the information on the  SSiD tuition pages .

Financial Guarantee

What is a financial guarantee.

Some countries require a financial guarantee. In order to study or work abroad you need to show the government of that country that you have the necessary funds to stay in the host country for before you can be issued with a visa.

Financial evidence is required by all USA universities at the overseas application stage. This can be before students have confirmed their student loan for the following year, meaning they have to provide alternative evidence that they can afford to be in the country. The host university will specify what documents they accept.

For other destinations, if you require a visa to be a student in that country, you may be asked for financial evidence when you apply for your visa and/or at the border. Some countries do not accept student loan as evidence as it is not money already in an account, and some countries specify the funds must be in an account of the applicant, not a guarantor. Exactly which documents are acceptable will be specified in the visa application requirements of the host country.

The amount you must show varies and is based on the expected living costs at the university you will attend, so it is important to budget to have that amount of money available to you.

Why do I have to provide a Financial Guarantee?

As you will be an international student whilst studying abroad, the host country needs to see proof that you can support yourself during your studies, so that they can ensure that you are not going to try to live off state funding. If you cannot provide sufficient evidence, you may not be allowed to go, or may only be offered a shorter period abroad.

Do I need to actually give the money to anyone?

No, you are just asked to show proof that you can afford the living costs in the country you will be studying and living in.

Student loans and grants

Changing your loan instalments from student finance england.

If you indicate on your Student Finance England application that you are studying abroad, you are automatically paid the first instalment 25 working days before the 'standard' course start date.

However, if your study placement starts earlier (e.g. if you are starting in Australia or New Zealand in July) Global Opportunities coordinate with the Student Administration Services so you should receive the first instalment of your Maintenance Loan on the first day of your study placement.

The standard is for you to receive your loan in three instalments, however Student Finance England offers the option of payment in two instalments by request. This is not automatically applied, so you must contact the Student Fees Team  if you wish to request this. Students going to Australia will automatically receive their loan in two instalments, with the second instalment in January.

Payment in two instalments is also available for students who will study abroad in the USA, Canada, and New Zealand.

Students studying abroad in China, Japan or Russia can get the whole loan in one instalment. This is always requested for students going to these countries.

If you are sent a Course Abroad form by Student Finance, then you request that SSiD completes this for you. If you require a letter for Student Finance to confirm the details of your period abroad, this can also be obtained from SSiD. This information is shared by the university with Student Finance regularly, so you may not be asked for a letter or form.

Student Finance Travel Grant

Student Finance offer a non-repayable travel grant where you can claim back for certain travel related costs with evidence, providing you have not paid for these costs using funding from the Turing scheme.

The travel grant is income-assessed and can cover reasonable costs as decided by Student Finance. Previously students have been able to claim:

  • standard economy flights to and from their host country
  • transport to and from their host university or work placement, if it is a large distance from their accommodation
  • visa application costs
  • health insurance costs.

Students must pay the first £303 of travel costs themselves.

If you apply for the travel grant you will need to complete a form which is available on request from Student Finance. You need to submit  all  of your receipts and booking confirmations that relate to the costs you are claiming as part of the application, so remember to save everything. You can apply for the Travel Grant at any time during the academic year, so you can wait until you have finished your year abroad before claiming, and there's no limit to how many forms students can submit. Once Student Finance have assessed your claim, if you are due a payment you can expect to receive it in 3-5 working days.

For further information on the travel grant, see the Student Finance  webpage .

University hardship fund

As you will still be a fully registered student of the University of Sheffield during your period abroad, you may apply for the Financial Support (hardship) Fund for unforeseeable expenses or emergency costs.

Working whilst studying abroad

If you are thinking about working during your time abroad, you need to check the website for your host university and the embassy for that country to see what regulations and restrictions there are.

Some universities and/or countries do not allow students to work during their stay.

You must clarify this prior to applying for your visa as you may need to declare that you want to work at visa application stage.

All questions need to be referred to the embassy for the country you are going to.

What's available.

1. Overview

2. What's available

3. Eligibility

4. Application

The amount of grant available to a student depends on their household income.

Any Travel Grant they can get will be reduced by £1 for each £8.73 of household income over £39,796.

They must pay the first £303 of their travel costs themselves.

Students studying abroad

Students can apply for:

  • up to 3 return journeys between their home and their university abroad during a full academic year abroad
  • necessary daily travel costs while abroad
  • necessary medical insurance, vaccinations and visas

Students who are single parents may be able to apply for their children’s travel costs.

They should use the most economic and practical form of travel, such as buying standard-class tickets instead of first-class tickets. We will consider claims where no standard economy seats were available or where an alternative ticket type couldn’t be avoided.

If they’ve bought an Economy Flex fare (not Plus) because they don’t know their return dates they should let us know when they send us their claim form.

Medical or dental students doing a clinical placement in the UK

Students can apply for travel costs between their home and the hospital or facility where they’re doing their placement.

How it's paid

Students pay the upfront costs of their travel and then submit a claim form for these costs

They must provide evidence to support their claims for travel expenses. They’ll only get paid their Travel Grant if they send us all the  evidence  we ask for.

The Travel Grant is paid directly into their bank account and they won’t have to wait until their next instalment of student finance to get their money.

How much does travel insurance for students cost, travel guard: best for budget travelers, world nomads: best for adventurers, allianz: best for premier travel benefits at a lower cost, geoblue navigator for students: best study abroad health insurance, more tips for purchasing study abroad travel insurance.

If you’re a student who’s planning to travel internationally or study abroad, it’s a good idea to go prepared with comprehensive student travel insurance. But where do you find plans tailored to your unique needs?

These companies offer some of the best options for travel insurance for students, whether you’re globe-trotting for a week, a semester or a whole year.

Student travel insurance can vary from plan to plan. But there are a few things you should look for whether you’re an exchange student, studying abroad or simply planning an international trip between classes.

Trip cancellation insurance : This coverage reimburses you for any prepaid, nonrefundable costs of your trip should you have to cancel for any unexpected circumstances covered by your selected policy.

Travel medical coverage : If you become ill or get injured while traveling, travel medical coverage can help pay for medical expenses and even emergency travel back home.

Travel delay insurance : In the event of rescheduled or canceled flights that result in painfully long layovers, this coverage will reimburse you for personal items, food and lodging you may have to pay for as you wait for a rescheduled flight.

Delayed baggage : Just as it sounds, this coverage reimburses you for luggage (including necessities you might have to purchase while you wait for your luggage to arrive) if it’s delayed or lost by a travel provider in transit.

As with travel insurance for more general travelers, there are several factors that affect the cost of travel insurance for study abroad students and other young travelers, including:

Traveler age.

Overall trip cost.

Trip duration.

Specific coverage selected.

Because there are so many factors involved, and because every travel insurance company is different, it’s often wise to compare a number of plans to decide which is best for you and your travel plans. That said, these are some of the best student travel insurance options.

Travel Guard by AIG

  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Exclusion Waiver available at all plan levels.

What Travel Guard covers

There are several options available from Travel Guard for travel insurance for students studying abroad or simply exploring on break: Deluxe, Preferred and Essential.

They all include trip cancellation and interruption, medical coverage, and lost or delayed baggage insurance. Bonus: They even come with dental coverage. Add-ons like car rental coverage and “cancel for any reason coverage” are also available with some plans.

There is also an annual plan available, but coverage automatically expires if any single trip lasts longer than 90 days, so it wouldn’t likely be sufficient for more than a semester abroad.

Multiple price points for a wide range of coverage options.

Dental coverage included.

24/7 emergency assistance available with all plans.

If you plan on participating in adventure sports, the Adventure Sports Bundle is only available as an add-on on some Preferred and Deluxe plans.

What Allianz covers

A well-known travel insurance company, Allianz offers a number of travel insurance plans that may appeal to students.

All plans include epidemic coverage, trip cancellation and interruption, medical and dental coverage, baggage loss and delay, and 24-hour assistance. And premium plans tend to offer similar coverage as other insurance companies but at a lower price.

There’s also an annual plan available called AllTrips, but it doesn’t cover individual trips longer than 45 consecutive days.

Includes epidemic coverage (including for COVID-19).

Covers 100% of prepaid costs if you cancel your trip for a covered reason.

The cost to change flights or other transportation is covered on some plans if you have to change or cancel bookings because of a covered reason.

  • Flexible deductible options.
  • Wide ranging medical coverage.
  • Low prices for medical only needs.
  • Lacks in traditional travel insurance coverage options such as trip Interruption, bag delays, etc.
  • Better when paired with travel credit card insurance coverage.

What GeoBlue covers

Designed for students staying in one place for more than a week or even a whole semester, GeoBlue’s Navigator for Students plan is perfect for students studying abroad who are more concerned with health care coverage than travel-related benefits.

It’s designed more like traditional health insurance with deductibles, monthly payment plans and unlimited annual maximums when it comes to medical care. It covers medical care inside and outside the U.S., making it a good overall health insurance if you plan to travel back and forth. Travel vaccinations, emergency medical transportation and repatriation are even covered.

What’s not covered are more typical travel-related expenses like lost baggage, delayed flights and trip cancellation. But the medical coverage is so comprehensive that if you want travel-specific coverage, you could opt to purchase a more budget-friendly plan for each specific trip.

Unlimited annual maximum for medical benefits.

Sliding payment scale to customize your deductible-to-monthly premium payments.

Preventive care is covered.

Dental and vision benefits are extra.

Coverage for most travel-related snafus isn’t included.
