In 2024, New York will also celebrate the opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center in the West Village (this will be the first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Park Service). The event at Otsiningo Park features five hot air balloon launches, concerts, celebrity guests, an antique car show, 5K run, cornhole tournament, and, of course, a Spiedie cooking contest.

Take a relaxing paddleboat cruise with the Lake George Steamboat Company (pictured), camp under the stars on a secluded island (make sure to book your site early!), go up, down, and all the way around at Six Flags Great Escape and Hurricane Harbor , see life-sized dinosaurs in the Magic Forest , experience history at Fort William Henry , and more! This annual festival runs from January 11th through 18th, 2024. Over 100 bands will play at dozens of venues across the city.

Let these smoking hot jam sessions warm you up this winter!

You can buy tickets for individual shows, a day pass, or a two-day pass. See their  website  for the details.

If you aren't in town for the festival dates, you can see some fantastic jazz shows at famous venues like the Village Vanguard and Blue Note in Greenwich Village .

7. Look into a Tourist Discount Pass

A tourist discount pass affords you discounted entry into most of NYC’s most popular attractions.

While the passes themselves certainly aren’t free, if you plan your itineraries well, you will end up getting one or two attractions for free each day.

There are several different types of passes, so be sure to  read our comparison post  to learn about how you can save the most money on your trip.

8. Go Ice Skating

All the ice skating rinks in NYC are open in January, including the famed Rockefeller Center Rink and the Rink at Bank of America Winter Village.

Ice skating is an ideal activity for the whole family and you can go skating at night for a magical experience.

A few ice rinks you can visit include:

  • Wollman Rink
  • Chelsea Pier Sky Rink
  • South Street Seaport Rink
  • The Rink at Rockefeller Center

To find out the many places you can go skating in the city, see our post on  where to go ice skating in NYC .

9. Visit the Bank of America Winter Village in Bryant Park

Winter Village at Bryant Park is one of the best holiday markets in NYC to shop for one-of-a-kind items including handmade winter clothing, sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves, decorative items, and more.

Although the Winter Village and shops will close around January 2nd, the ice skating rink, The Lodge Bar and Food Hall, and igloos will stay open until March 2024.

There will also be bumper cars on ice starting January 13th.

And, in the video below, tour guides Katie and Lori, from Free Tours by Foot , take you on a virtual tour of the Winter Village in Bryant Park.

It's located in Midtown Manhattan so why not also join one of our Midtown Manhattan Tours ? If you can't join us, try our  GPS-led audio tour.

Check out our guide on  50+ Things to Do in Midtown Manhattan .

10. Eat a 5-star Meal for Less During Restaurant Week

Enjoy a 5-star meal at a top New York restaurant and pay 1/4 of the regular cost!

During Restaurant Week, more than 300 of New York City’s best restaurants offer a prix-fixe menu for a very low price, relative to their regular prices.

The list of participating restaurants will be available in early January.

Pre-fix meal prices have run around $30, $45, or $60 in the past, and we anticipate the prices will be in this range, or perhaps a bit higher due to inflation.

The 2024 dates have not been released yet, but we expect that it will run again from mid-January to mid-February.

For advice on how to get the restaurants you want, see our post on how to make the most of Restaurant Week.

HONORABLE MENTION: After Christmas Sales at Woodbury Commons

Woodbury Commons is one of the premium outlet malls in New York state. It is only one hour north of New York City and worth the easy ride there.

Our post,  How to Get to Woodbury Commons , has everything you need to know to get there, including bus company recommendations as well as directions on how to go by train.

Or, you could watch Katie tell you all about it in this video below.

This huge outlet mall has 220 stores including many upscale stores.

You can find post-holiday sales offering 25%-65% off everything from clothes, household goods, accessories, and much more.

There are also several other NYC outlets where you can save money this January.

HONORABLE MENTION: Take a Hop-on-Hop-off Bus Tour

Hop-on-hop-off bus tours are a good way at any time of the year to see a lot of the city in a little bit of time.

In January, a bus tour has the additional enticing feature of keeping you warm on days that are especially cold.

Since they stop at the popular attraction locations, you can use the bus to move from destination to destination and it is a lot more interesting to look out a bus window than to stand in a crowded subway.

Our post on  Hop-On, Hop-Off NYC Bus Tours  can help you decide which is best for you. One of the tours is also included on the GoCity Pass .

This is one of the most festive days of the year for all New Yorkers, regardless of heritage.

THINGS TO DO AT NIGHT IN JANUARY

Below are a few ideas for keeping yourself entertained at night.

Also, be sure to check out all the sections of this post, as you'll find other great nighttime activities, like going ice skating, seeing a concert or Broadway show, or attending a sports event.

For more ideas, see our post on  New York City at Night  and our  New York Night Tours .

See the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Lucky for those coming to New York City the first week of January, you get a chance to see the stunning and gigantic Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.

The tree typically remains illuminated from 5:30 a.m. to Midnight every day until mid-January.

See our full post on the  Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree for much more information.

While you are there, think about visiting the Top of the Rock where you get unparalleled views of New York City.

Read our post on how to get discount tickets for  Top of The Rock . Access can be found on the GoCity Pass as well.

See New York City Sparkle from Above

Head to one of the five observation decks in January.

You'll have an easier time getting tickets for your preferred time slot and won't fight the crowds to get to the windows.

And in this short video, Katie explains how to plan your visit to the Empire State Building.

  • Empire State Building  | until 10 pm
  • Top of the Rock  | until 11 pm
  • One World Trade Center Observatory  | until 10pm through January 5th, until 9pm from January 6th
  • Summit One Vanderbilt | until 11 pm
  • Edge Observation Deck | until 10 pm

Not sure which to visit? See our list of the pros and cons of each of them . Some can be found on the GoCity pass .

Go to a Winter Antiques Show

In 2024 The Winter Show takes place from January 19th – 28th, with an opening night party on January 18th.

This is the most prestigious antique show in America.

It is held at the historic Park Avenue Armory and the show highlights an eclectic mix of works dating from ancient times to the present day.

The Armory itself is a gorgeous location to showcase fine works of art. Going to the Winter Antiques Show is worth it just to see the building.

Click here for information on hours, directions to the Armory, and more.

Take a Bus Night Tour

Seeing New York City at night can make for an entirely new way to see the city.

The New York skyline is breathtaking when illuminated after dark.

Night bus tours  are also a great way to see many different areas of the city in a short amount of time.

Note that our  free self-guided  tours are viewable on your device, or our audio tours are equipped with GPS which is good for night or day.

FREE THINGS TO DO IN JANUARY

Here are just a few free things you can do in NYC in January.

  • Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
  • The Museum of the City of New York
  • Brooklyn Academy of Music
  • Apollo Theater

Both the Apollo Theater and the Schomberg Center are located in Harlem, the perfect neighborhood to visit on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Take a look at our  A Harlem Visitors' Guide  for suggestions of things to do there.

Attend a Free TV Show Taping

Totally free, totally fun! And totally easier to get a seat in January when the tourist season is over.

This video covers what you need to know about getting free tickets to TV show tapings and live broadcasts of popular shows in NYC.

We include how to apply for tickets, what to expect on the day of the show, as well as information on TV studio tours.

Our post of  New York TV Show Tapings  explains how you can get free tickets to shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning America, and many more.

Best things to do in New York City this January

new york trips jan 2024

January is the month when, without the distractions of the holidays, winter finally gets real. City dwellers stay in and recuperate from December’s excesses (or head to the gym; don’t try to drop in at a yoga studio this month!), so the events calendar is a little light. If a big snowstorm sweeps in – January is usually the month the first one hits – the city gets even quieter. Still, you’ll find plenty to do, from the ice-cold ocean to a hot Korean sauna.

New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim

polar-bear-swim-in-new-york-cs

Get the blood flowing for 2015 with a bracing dip in the Atlantic, off the boardwalk at Coney Island. If you start to lose your nerve, just look around – thousands of other people will be there, plunging into the icy water at your side. Swim time is 1pm. Where : Coney Island boardwalk (1000 Surf Ave, Brooklyn) More info : polarbearclub.org

Holidays, held over

A few holiday trimmings are still on view after Christmas. New York City Ballet ’s production of The Nutcracker runs through January 3, the Rockefeller Center tree is lit through January 7, and the big department stores on Fifth Ave leave their elaborate window displays in place through at least the first few days of the month. The longest-running option is the New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show, through January 19. In the garden’s glass conservatory, large-scale model trains course through a landscape of miniature NYC landmarks built out of twigs, bark and other green stuff. Where : New York Botanical Garden (2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx) More info :  nybg.org

'Somebody Come and Play' Sesame Street exhibition

Celebrating 45 years of Sesame Street. Image by Jonathan Blanc / The New York Public Library

Check out this exhibit of 45 years of that essential NYC-based children’s program, Sesame Street , in the form of scripts, storyboards, models and of course plenty of clips from the show and behind the scenes. When : until Jan 31 Where : New York Library for the Performing Arts (40 Lincoln Plaza Center) More info : nypl.org

Prototype Festival

Opera is a lot more than divas in giant dresses. This nine-day festival focuses on the fringiest, most avant-garde edge of the art form, with world premieres of such works as Toxic Psalms , which blends a Slovenian women’s chorus with feminist commentary. Only in its third year, the festival is still under the radar – it’ll be you and some serious music geeks in some very cool downtown venues, plus the excellent St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn. When : Jan 8–17 Where : Various venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn More info : prototypefestival.org

Matisse vs Picasso

Two giants of modern art, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, have had competing shows this fall, and both are ending soon. Until January 10, a personal and eclectic selection of Picasso’s work inspired by his last wife, Jacqueline Roque, is on view at Pace Gallery – for free. All month long at the Museum of Modern Art, you can see the paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse (Picasso’s contemporary and rival), also composed late in life. This has been a blockbuster, and is open only with timed tickets – reserve ahead. When : Picasso: until Jan 10; Matisse: until Feb 8 Where : Picasso: Pace Gallery (32 E 57 th St); Matisse: Museum of Modern Art (11 W 53 rd St) More info : thepacegallery.com , moma.org

No Pants Subway Ride

No Pants Subway. Image by Brian / CC BY 2.0

You’ve probably seen videos of Improv Everywhere’s stunts – hundreds of people freeze in the middle of Grand Central , or a team lays down a ' tourist lane ' for slow walkers. Here’s your chance to participate. The catch: you’ll have to take off your trousers. It’s for the annual restaging of one of the group’s classic gags, in which the subway is overtaken by riders who look normal in every way, except for an absence of pants. (No, this is not a nudist thing! You must wear underwear – the wackier, the better.) When : Jan 11 Where : all over the city More info : improveverywhere.com

Broadway Week

Twice a year (and for more than a week, but who’s arguing?), you can snap up two tickets to a Broadway play for the price of one. It’s a relative bargain, with the added benefit of being able to plan ahead (instead of waiting for deals at the TKTS booth). Not every show participates, but big hits such as Kinky Boots as well as dramas such as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time are available. Tickets go on sale January 9 at 10:30am local time – have your travel schedule set and be ready to click 'buy'! (The other 'week' is in September.) When : Jan 20–Feb 5; tickets on sale Jan 9 Where : various Broadway theaters More info : nycgo.com

Brooklyn tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr

Now in its 29 th year, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) hosts programming dedicated to the civil rights leader, whose birthday is observed as a national holiday. This year, charismatic professor and activist Dr Cornel West will give a keynote speech, followed by music from a local choir and a performance by the soul singer Sandra St Victor. When : Jan 19 Where : BAM (30 Lafayette Ave, between Ashland Pl and St Felix St, Fort Greene, Brooklyn) More info : bam.org

Snow in Central Park

Snowboarding in Central Park for Winter Jam. Image by Tony Fischer / CC BY 2.0

If a winter storm hits while you’re in the city, don’t hide in your hotel – go straight outside! Snow transforms the streets into a muffled wonderland and thaws the hearts of even the frostiest New Yorkers. To see this in action, head to Central Park , where kids and adults alike may be making snow angels, building snowmen and sledding down Pilgrim Hill (near 72 nd Street on the east side). If there’s no snow forecast, plan on hitting the Winter Jam, one day late in the month when snowmaking machines cover the area around the bandshell with white stuff, for skiing, snowshoeing and more. When : Winter Jam: Jan 24 Where : Central Park More info : Winter Jam: nycgovparks.org

Though born in England, rock icon Billy Idol was formed by New York – he spent part of his childhood on Long Island, then returned as an adult, in 1981, to make a career in the punk scene. As part of his current tour (supporting a new album, as well as his autobiography, titled, you guessed it, Dancing with Myself ), he appears at the Beacon Theatre, an elegant ex-movie palace with seats for close to 3,000. When : Jan 28 Where : Beacon Theatre (2124 Broadway, at 74 th St) More info : beacontheatre.com

Ice skating

New York is having a renaissance in ice rinks. Two new venues in Brooklyn – Lakeside Center at Prospect Park and the renovated McCarren Rink, in Williamsburg – are great places to hit the ice with locals. In Manhattan, Bryant Park’s Winter Village, behind the main public library, has The Pond. And the classic spots – Wollman Rink in Central Park and the rink at Rockefeller Center – are still going strong. (Of these two, we recommend the larger Wollman Rink for skating; spectating is preferable at the tiny, pricey Rock Center rink.) When : until mid-Mar Where : Lakeside Center: 171 East Dr, Prospect Park, Brooklyn; McCarren Rink: 776 Lorimer St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Bryant Park: 42nd St & Sixth Ave; Wollman Rink: southeast corner of Central Park; The Rink at Rockefeller Center: Fifth Ave btwn 49th & 50th Sts More info : lakesidebrooklyn.com , nycgovparks.org , wintervillage.org , wollmanskatingrink.com , therinkatrockcenter.com

Woolworth Building tours

Woolworth Building is now open for tours. Image by Harvey Barrison / CC BY-SA 2.0

Bitter January might not be the best time to visit this lower Manhattan landmark, since part of the tour involves standing on the street in front, listening to your architect tour guide. But as of a month ago, this is the first time in this century that the 101-year-old tower has been open to tourists. Fortunately the tours go inside as well, giving you a little chance to defrost while you admire the ornate lobby. They don’t build ’em like this anymore. When : ongoing, every day but Mon Where : 233 Broadway More info : woolworthtours.com

Spa Castle Premier 57

Just opened in December, this new branch of a deluxe Korean spa brings all the perks of its original location (in the epically inconvenient neighborhood of College Point, Queens) to a handy spot in Midtown. It’s three floors of relaxation, with six types of saunas, heated Jacuzzis, skin-scrubbing spa treatments and even a food court. Check in for the day and get warmed up! When : ongoing Where : 115 E 57 th St More info : spacastleusa.com

Brooklyn Winter Flea

The tastemakers of the Brooklyn Flea move indoors for the season. Among the more than 100 vendors, you'll find antiques, records, vintage clothes, craft items and enticing food stalls stuffed with tasty treats. There’s a stroller and coat check, for easier browsing. Next door is partner operation Berg’n, a festive beer hall. When : weekends until Mar Where : Crown Heights, Brooklyn (1000 Dean St btwn Classon & Franklin Aves) More info :  brooklynflea.com

New York - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

New York City

Travel Highlights

  • The Empire State Building is a must-see. An icon of the city skyline, head to the viewing deck for a breathtaking perspective.
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art or ‘The Met’ houses one of the biggest art collections in the world.
  • The Rockefeller Center is the epitome of New York in Winter. The Christmas Tree, the ice rink, the shops. If you’re visiting for Christmas, this is the place to go.
  • Times Square is the image of New York broadcast around the world. While a tourist trap, it has to be seen.
  • Chinatown is an experience like no other; an attack on the senses that you won’t begrudge.
  • Brooklyn Bridge is another icon of New York, but it’s also crowded. Pulaski Bridge is lesser known and offers a great view of the NYC skyline.
  • The 9/11 memorial will be a sobering experience.

Travel Tips

  • To visit the Empire State Building, buy tickets online or arrive very early or late to avoid long queues. It open all year around (including holidays) from 8 am to 2 am.
  • Get a Metrocard and start using the subway.
  • Dress for the weather. Walking a lot is mandatory in New York and being prepared for the outdoors will pay off.
  • Foodies should head to Hell’s Kitchen and 9th Ave, just five minutes away from Times Square.

Let me tell you—these are the best quirky NYC events to bookmark for 2024

Archery? Check. Confetti? Check. Knitted subway? Check.

Rossilynne Skena Culgan

"Let Me Tell You"  is a series of columns from our expert editors about NYC living, including the best things to do, where to eat and drink, and what to see at the theater. They publish each Tuesday so you’re hearing from us each week. Last time, Things to Do Editor Rossilynne Skena Culgan explained what it was like to be a Friends fan at the Friends Experience .

As Things to Do Editor at Time Out New York, it's part of my job to, well, do a lot of things. During the past year, I've attended hundreds of events, from gallery shows to comedy shows and pop-ups to programs. But many of my favorite events include something a little quirky, a tinge of the delightful weirdness that makes New York City a place like no other on the globe.

I combed back through my archive of stories and cache of photos to pick out 10 of the best, most unusual events I did this year with hopes you may bookmark some of these for next year. As my friends at Schtick a Pole In It (a pole dancing comedy show that's on my list for 2024) put it: "If you don't see shows like this, why are you even paying the NYC rents?" Amen to that.

10 quirky NYC events to do in 2024

Without further ado, here are my picks to infuse your 2024 with awe, amazement, wonder and weirdness in our city.

Two women hold books in a garden.

1. Books and Burlesque

Sure, you've heard of wine pairings. But what about books and burlesque pairings? At this burlesque show, award-winning authors read excerpts from their new books. Then, a burlesque or drag performer showcases a new act inspired by the book.

The event I attended included an acrobatic performance with cash and purses (inspired by Kirstin Chen's Counterfeit ), an avant-garde drag performance (dedicated to Elyssa Maxx Goodman's  Glitter and Concrete: A Cultural History of Drag in New York City ) and lots more. The show's both bubbly and meaningful, making for a joyful and affirming night.

The next show is on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Caveat on the Lower East Side.

A Ninja Turtles sculpture made of cans.

2. Canstruction

This free event flips the script on the traditional Thanksgiving canned food drive. Instead of leaving cans of food to languish in boxes until they’re distributed to those in need, the cans are transformed into art. Local architecture and design firms use the cans as building blocks to create intricate sculptures. This year’s larger-than-life sculptures included a Ninja Turtle, Pooh Bear and a riff on the painting “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” (my personal favorite).

Canstruction is usually presented at Brookfield Place around Thanksgiving, so keep an eye out in the fall. It's free to visit, but remember to bring some canned goods to donate. All the canned foods are donated after the display ends.

A person dances on an oversized record player, cast in pink light and haze.

3. THC NYC, the weed museum

Whether you're a toker or a non-smoker, visiting NYC's new weed museum promises a trippy experience. While the museum boasts plenty of mind-bending multi-sensory bells and whistles, it also showcases art, highlights science and confronts the social justice issues baked into cannabis prosecution.

The space is beautifully designed with immersive experiences around every corner. I'm still dreaming about The Euphorium, where you can lay down on a massive spinning record while it plays music important to stoner culture, from The Doors to Santana.

THC NYC  is now open with tickets on sale here  starting at $39.

4. Chocolate Room at MoMA

You know how sometimes you can smell a good restaurant before you see it? Well, this is kind of like that, but it's art.

For Ed Ruscha's Chocolate Room, an entire room at MoMA is covered in chocolate for a mouthwateringly beautiful display created on-site. While immersive art is nothing new these days, Ruscha created his first Chocolate Room back in 1970, long before the days of Instagram. It still maintains its off-beat attitude today—and it sure is refreshing to experience immersive art that doesn’t rely on digital projections on a wall.

See it before the show closes on January 13, 2024.

Seven models stand with their backs toward the camera; each one is painted from head to toe.

5. Naked Bodypainting Day

On a sweltering day this July, dozens of fully nude models stood very still in Union Square while being painted from head to toe as part of Naked Bodypainting Day. The event celebrated the human body in all of its beautiful shapes, sizes, genders, ethnicities and ages (ranging from the 20s to the 80s at the event).

While I heard some suppressed giggles or gasps upon seeing the models, most onlookers stood in quiet awe of the artists and in respect for an event that organizer Andy Golub says is all about “spreading joy and feeling joy.”

While this year's event was the last NYC Naked Bodypainting Day, Golub's   Human Connection Arts  is  in talks to create an event called BodyFest this spring. If it happens—and we really hope it does—you definitely won't want to miss it.

6. A Sleepover With Wolves

New York City may be the "city that never sleeps," but there's a spot in Westchester County that may prove a formidable opponent for that title. This summer, I booked an experience called "Sleeping With Wolves" at the Wolf Conservation Center about an hour north of Manhattan. I slept in a pretty posh tent, all things considered, and happily stayed awake while listening to the wolves howl away.

The sleepover includes a pizza dinner, a chance to see the wolves … and a movie. It’s extremely memorable—and it helps an important cause. Bookings are available from May through October 2023. Here’s my full rundown on the one-of-a-kind experience and how to make the most of it.

7. Celebration Lab

After attending an event called Celebration Lab this past spring, I sometimes still find bits of colorful confetti in my purse, and it makes me smile every time because this event is magic. It's hosted by joy-in-human-form Jelena Aleksich, who walks participants through meditation, journaling and movement.

Strangers quickly become friends at this event, which culminates in a "let it all go and receive" dance circle. You'll even get a runway moment where everyone cheers and throws confetti on you while a photographer documents the moment.

The next event is on February 3, 2024; tickets are on sale here for $99.

Tombstones in a cemetery in Manhattan.

8. Death in New York walking tour

Forbidden stories lurk beneath the sidewalk and around every corner in New York City, and a series of walking tours by Purefinder spotlights these tales. I took the "Death in New York" walking tour , which explores Battery Park, the Financial District, Tribeca, the Civic Center and Chinatown in Lower Manhattan.

The author behind these tours, K. Krombie, also offers tours called "The Psychiatric History of New York," "Hell Gate," and "Oppenheimer in New York." Each one offers its own twist, but they all promise meticulously researched and theatrically presented historical narratives that you won't find in the guidebooks.

Tickets are on sale here starting at $36.

Kendall Tichner holds a bow and arrow inside Wild Captives studio.

9. Archery at Wild Captives

Archery is no longer just something you did at summer camp as a kid. Instead, a new archery company in Brooklyn's Industry City is changing the game for this sport.

Wild Captives, led by Kendall Tichner, is the nation's first female- and LGBTQ-owned archery studio where she hopes everyone can "be their own superhero." I definitely felt that way while learning how to shoot the bow to pop a balloon pinned onto the target.

The studio in Brooklyn’s Industry City offers an hour-long introduction to archery classes every weekend for $45/person for an empowering and unique way to spend a day.

A fabric version of pizza rat.

10. The Straphangers Lounge, a knitted subway

If the actual New York City subway had cloth seats, I definitely wouldn't sit on them, but at this super special sewing pop-up, you'll want to make an exception. The creative duo of knitters Sue Hunter and Karima Sundarji built  The Straphangers Lounge , in which they created an entire subway car interior made out of textiles. You'll see uncannily realistic orange seats, advertisements, a spilled coffee cup and even a pizza rat.

I got to check out the pop-up during its debut last winter, and it’s a sight to see.  They're bringing it back again this year between January 26-28, 2024, at the New York Marriott Marquis. It’s free to visit.

Schtick a pole in it

As for next year, here are a few quirky events on my personal NYC to-do list: Schtick a Pole In It , a  Behind-the-scenes tour of the abandoned Ellis Island Hospital , Drunken Laboratory , and an  ice sculpture show at Governors Island . Hope to see you out there!

Day Trip from NYC to Philadelphia

Day_Trip_from_New_York_to_Philadelphia

Another worthwhile place to visit that’s close to NYC is Philadelphia. At just an hour and a half by train, it’s close enough that many Philadelphians commute to New York City for work daily. Though they are close, these two cities couldn’t have different ambiances; where New York is mainly made from concrete and is a large city, Philly has more green spaces and gives more of a small-town vibe.

The main draw to this city is its importance in American history, which is evident in many areas of the city – especially the Old City district, which is a small section of the downtown area. Yet, Philadelphia is also home to more than historical landmarks, as you’ll also find exceptional art museums, Chinatown, a primarily Italian neighborhood in South Philly, and lots of gray skyscrapers mixed with industrial warehouses in the downtown section.

Distance: 100 Miles (2 hours by car)

If you decide to take a day trip to Philadelphia, don’t forget to check out these sights:

Things to do in Philadelphia on your day trip from New York

  • Hop over to Lancaster and take a horse-drawn buggy ride through Amish farm country.
  • Visit Independence Hall, where the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.
  • Tour the Museum of the American Revolution or the Benjamin Franklin Museum.
  • Walk down Elfreth’s Alley. This road is America’s first residential street, dating back to 1702, and is home to many art galleries, shops, and restaurants today.
  • View the art collections at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts or the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Day Trip from NYC to Albany

Roadtrip_from_New_York_to_Albany_New_York

Albany is New York’s capital city and is not just the oldest city in the state, but it’s one of the oldest in the nation. English immigrants took control of Albany, NY, in 1664 and named it after the Duke of Albany. By the early 1800s, the city was the 10th largest in the country, which is a title that San Jose, CA, took. The area’s growth was fueled by the creation of the Erie Canal and the railroad, and it continued to serve as a vital transportation hub until the early 1900s.

Hence, as you can see, this area has an extensive history, and there are many local attractions that help provide excellent learning experiences for newbies. Today, this capital city and college town is home to about 100,000 people and has something for everyone.

Distance: 150 Miles (2,5 hours by car)

Things to do in Albany on your day trip from New York

  • Enjoy local flavors such as Chicken Joe’s, Pint-Sized, and Madison Pour House.
  • Stroll through the Albany Institute of Art & History.
  • Ride a bike at the historic Washington Park.

Day Trip from NYC to Rockaway Beach

Rockaway__Beach_200228135336001

Located just over 20 miles from Manhattan, you’ll find Rockaway Beach tucked away in Queens. Though it’s known as Rockaway Beach, this destination encompasses several beaches between 3rd Street and 153rd Street. It is renowned for being the best beach destination close to New York City, so it merits the hour-long subway ride from downtown Manhattan.

If you visit this area in the high season from the end of May through Labor Day, then you can expect to find many surfers, swimmers, and sunbathers enjoying the water and sun. While it’s most popular in the summer, Rockaway Beach makes for a refreshing place to visit any time of the year.

Distance: 25 Miles (1 hour by car | 1,5 hour by subway lines A S to “Beach 105 St”)

Things To Do at Rockaway Beach

  • Take in the invigorating ocean smells as you walk along the sandy beaches.
  • Stop for a drink or snacks at one of the numerous food stands or casual eateries on the Beach Boardwalk.
  • Go on an expedition and explore some abandoned buildings.
  • Tan and swim at the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk.

Weekend Getaway from NYC to the Finger Lakes

Roadtrip_from_New_York_to_Finger_Lakes_Watkins_Glen

New York’s Finger Lakes region spans an area that encompasses 11 lakes in an area that was once covered by glaciers. In addition to the lakes, this region is also home to many natural pools, gorges, waterfalls, wineries, and state parks. The two most popular lakes are the deepest and largest: Cayuga Lake is 435 feet deep and is in Ithaca, while Seneca Lake is 618 feet deep and is found in the Watkins Glen State Park.

Many consider this the most underrated part of New York and makes for a great day trip away from New York City. It’s perfect for nearly everyone as the region has plenty of things to see and do.

Distance: 260 Miles (5 hours by car)

Things to do in the Finger Lakes Region on your day trip from New York

  • Go on a wine tasting tour.
  • Take in a game at NBT Bank Stadium.
  • Enjoy dinner and sunset on a boat cruise.

Places To See on your Day Trip from New York

  • Watkins Glen State Park (the trail is amazing!)
  • Robert Treman State Park
  • Rosamond Gifford Zoo
  • Corning Museum of Glass

Day Trip from NYC to Baltimore

220202170451001_Baltimore_Maryland

Baltimore is the capital of the US state of Maryland with a long and important history. It is somewhat comparable to Boston and yet it has its own charm.

During my roadtrip along the east coast of the USA, Baltimore landed on my itinerary for the first time. Due to its location by the ocean, it has its very own charm and is especially interesting for those who already know Boston and Washington. From New York you can reach Baltimore in about 3 to 4 hours. In terms of time, it makes no difference whether you travel by rental car or train.

Distance: 200 Miles (3 – 4 hours by car)

If you decide to visit Baltimore, here are some things to see and do:

Things to do in Baltimore on your day trip from New York

  • Do a craft-beer brewery tour or whiskey tasting tour (Baltimore is famous for both!)
  • Enjoy beautiful river views at the Inner Harbor …
  • … or from high above when visiting Top of the World Observation Level
  • Take photos of Historic Ships in Baltimore

Places To See

  • National Aquarium
  • Reginald F. Lewis Museum
  • Port Discovery Children’s Museum
  • Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

Day Trip from NYC to Cold Spring in the Hudson Valley

Roadtrip_from_New_York_to_Hudson_Valley

Cold Spring is renowned for being one of the best-preserved towns from the 19th Century and is just a 90-minute train ride from New York City. Once here, you’re greeted by a charming country village that was once a picturesque historic center created along the banks of the Hudson River.

Visitors enjoy spending the day in Cold Spring because the small downtown area is lined with antique stores, boutiques, and restaurants. During the summer, it’s common to find residents lining the streets enjoying coffee at one of the numerous sidewalk cafes or enjoying drinks and live music at one of many riverfront restaurants with an outdoor patio. Yet, this area is also home to many parks and hiking and biking trails.

Distance: 65 Miles (1,5 hour by car)

Things to do in Cold Spring on your Day Trip from New York

  • In the fall, sign up for a foliage cruise.
  • In the summer, go paddleboarding, boating, kayaking, and more.
  • Tour the Boscobel House and Gardens.
  • Hudson Highlands State Park
  • Bannerman Castle

From the boardwalk and its amusement rides to the powdery beaches and delicious seafood eateries, there is no shortage of establishments in Ocean City.

During my roadtrip along the east coast of the USA, Baltimore landed on my itinerary for the first time. Due to its location by the ocean, it has its very own charm and is especially interesting for those who already know Boston and Washington. From New York you can reach Baltimore in about 3 hours. In terms of time, it makes no difference whether you travel by rental car or train.

New York holiday FAQs

Make the most of your new york holiday.

With so much to see and do in New York, it can be tricky to know where to start, but don’t fret – our essential guide to holidays in New York will have you looking like a local in no time.

Where are the best areas to stay in New York?

New York’s sights are spread around the city, though most first-timers will want to stay somewhere on Manhattan Island. We’ve pulled out some of the best areas to stay in the city, below.

Many first-time visitors opt to stay near Times Square. It’s not known as ‘The Crossroads of the World’ for nothing: it’s one of the world’s busiest pedestrian areas and is well-connected to many of the city’s main sights. Stay at Tempo by Hilton New York Times Square and enjoy a finely tuned sleep environment and a dedicated Get Ready Zone designed for the responsible traveller. Midtown, the area around Times Square, is where you’ll find the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, and the Rockefeller Center. Try booking the New York Hilton Midtown .

If you’re hankering for a luxury hotel with all the trimmings: bells, whistles and bellhops, then Central Park, on the Upper East Side, is your best bet. This area is one of the most expensive in the city. This is the ultimate destination for culture (think opera, ballet, jazz, classical music, Michelin-starred restaurants) – and a taste of old New York. As you walk along Fifth Avenue, bordering Central Park, you’ll encounter ‘Museum Mile’, an area of prestigious institutions like the Met and the Frick. Stay at Park Lane New York and relish timeless views from the intimate rooftop, Darling.

Staying on the Lower East Side puts you near Brooklyn Bridge and the Tenement Museum – a popular museum exploring the area’s working-class roots. The LES has gentrified rapidly in the last couple of decades. Hotel Indigo Lower East Side New York gives you a feel for the area as it is now: trendy, young and fun.

Several eye-catching cast iron buildings form the backbone of the SoHo district, which sits below Midtown. The name comes from the area’s geography: it’s the region south of Houston Street, in downtown Broadway. SoHo is synonymous with shopping – with boutiques for everyone from Wolf & Badger to Celine. Stay at NoMo SoHo for interiors stuffed with vintage finds and curious furnishings. Tribeca sits along the Hudson River, north of the Financial District. Hudson River Park and its promenade provide a breath of fresh air amid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan – quite literally. Stay at Walker Hotel Tribeca which gives a nod to the neighbourhood’s industrial past with practical design, utilitarian furnishings and whitewashed brickwork.

When is the best time of year to visit NYC?

New York never stays the same. It refashions itself throughout the year, offering something different in every season. Visit in spring and stroll through blossoming parks. Toast to the skyline on a terrace in summer. See the city’s trees painted in fiery reds and golden hues in autumn. Or go in winter and wrap yourself in a big coat before staring up at the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree – there's a reason so many films romanticise Christmas in New York. Check out our New York Travel Guide for a lowdown on the city's seasonal highlights and start planning your New York city break now.

What are the best things to do in New York?

Judge Rejects Trump’s Effort to Delay Jan. 6 Civil Cases

The former president had sought to have lawsuits against him put on hold until after his federal criminal trial on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election.

  • Share full article

Donald J. Trump, seen on Jan. 6, 2021, on a stage outside the White House with American flags behind him and a crowd in front. A screen to his side reads “Save America March.”

By Alan Feuer

A federal judge on Thursday rejected former President Donald J. Trump’s attempt to delay a group of civil lawsuits that are seeking to hold him accountable for inspiring the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Mr. Trump had sought to have the suits put on hold until after the completion of his federal criminal trial connected to many of the same events. But in a nine-page ruling, the judge, Amit P. Mehta, decided that the civil lawsuits could move forward without running the risk that Mr. Trump might damage his chances in the criminal case by revealing his defense strategy prematurely or making statements that prosecutors might use against him.

Last month, when lawyers for Mr. Trump first asked Judge Mehta to postpone the civil cases , it was the latest example of the former president seeking to pit his multiple legal matters against one another in an effort to delay them.

In the past few days, Mr. Trump has also sought to push back an important filing deadline he is facing in his classified documents case in Florida by arguing that the lawyers who have to write the court papers in question need more time because they are busy representing him at yet another criminal trial — the one in Manhattan where he stands accused of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal on the eve of the 2016 election.

While Judge Mehta’s decision to let the civil suits move forward struck a blow against Mr. Trump’s delay tactics, he and his lawyers have been remarkably successful overall at throwing sand into the gears of all four of the criminal cases he is facing . The Manhattan trial, which is now in jury selection, may turn out to be the only one of the four to go in front of a jury before this fall’s election.

The Jan. 6 civil suits are an often forgotten aspect of the barrage of legal proceedings confronting Mr. Trump. In the months after the Capitol attack, a half-dozen of them were filed by members of Congress and police officers who were at the building that day, accusing Mr. Trump of inciting the mob that stormed the building.

The suits, which all are being heard in Federal District Court in Washington, have sought unspecified financial damages from the former president.

In his ruling, Judge Mehta acknowledged that there can often be dangers involved in permitting civil and criminal cases that touch on the same subject to move forward simultaneously. But he determined that the potential perils in this particular situation were relatively limited.

In December, a federal appeals court in Washington rejected Mr. Trump’s claim that he was immune to the civil suits because their allegations arose from official acts he took while he was president.

As part of its decision, the appeals court sent the case back to Judge Mehta to decide whether Mr. Trump’s fiery speech on Jan. 6, in which he urged his supporters to march to the Capitol, should be considered an official act of his presidency or was instead a private act related to his re-election campaign.

It was that fact-finding process, which has not yet started, that prompted Mr. Trump’s lawyers to ask that the civil cases be put on hold. The lawyers were concerned that if Mr. Trump or his allies were forced to provide information about the nature of his speech or any other remarks he had made concerning Jan. 6, it could be used against him by prosecutors in the criminal case.

But Judge Mehta disagreed, saying that any new information that might come out about Mr. Trump’s speech would be limited and that prosecutors would likely not be able to use it against Mr. Trump in the criminal proceeding in any meaningful or damaging way.

The criminal case itself has been on hold for months as a series of courts have considered Mr. Trump’s attempt to use a similar immunity defense to derail it. The Supreme Court is poised to hear a final round of arguments on the immunity claim on April 25.

Former PM Aso seeks Trump meeting during New York visit: report

Former Prime Minister Taro Aso speaks during a forum in Taiwan in 2023.

Taro Aso, a former prime minister who currently serves as vice president of the Liberal Democratic Party, will travel to New York next week and is seeking a meeting with U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to NHK.

He is seeking a meeting with the Republican candidate, who is in New York standing trial in a hush money case, NHK reported citing sources. One source familiar with his travel plans said Aso may want to see Trump but declined to elaborate.

Aso, who was deputy prime minister during Trump's 2017-2021 term as president, attempted to meet Trump in January during a trip to the U.S. but was not able to see him.

Japan has been trying to connect with people close to Trump ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election that could see him return to office and resurrect protectionist trade measures and other contentious policies that threatened to strain relations between the allies.

Then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first foreign leader to meet Trump after his victory in the 2016 presidential election. The pair went on to form a close bond, forged over hours on the golf course, that helped defuse some of these contentious issues.

Supreme Court gives skeptical eye to key statute used to prosecute Jan. 6 rioters

People walk by as supporters of Jan. 6 defendants gather outside of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The U.S. Supreme Court appeared divided on Tuesday, with conservatives expressing various degrees of skepticism about the statute used to prosecute more than 350 people involved with the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

At least partially on the line at Tuesday's argument was the Justice Department's effort to punish some of those it deems the more serious participants in the Capitol riot. Roughly one-quarter of those prosecuted so far for their roles in the Capitol invasion have been charged with violating a federal statute enacted after the Enron scandal in 2002, a scandal that involved massive document shredding and fraud.

One part of the law makes it a crime to "corruptly" alter or destroy documents and records related to an official proceeding. The second part makes it a crime to otherwise obstruct or impede an official proceeding, including a congressional proceeding.

Trump's criminal trial, a first for a former president, has begun in New York

Trump's criminal trial, a first for a former president, has begun in New York

Joseph Fischer, a former police officer charged in the riot, is challenging the use of the second provision, asserting that it was never meant, as the government claims, to be a catchall obstruction law.

His lawyer faced a grilling from the court's three liberal justices, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Kagan suggested that, in her view, Congress wrote the second part of the law to "plug gaps" in the then-existing obstruction statutes. In short, as she put it, "It was meant to function as a backstop."

Jackson said that trying to prevent the electoral count seemed to her like an obstruction of an official proceeding. And Sotomayor said that if this statute doesn't seem to be an exact match for the Jan. 6 attack, that is because there had never been an event like this one before.

But Fischer's lawyer, Jeffrey Green, seemed to have a willing audience in the court's six conservative members. They aimed their most skeptical questions at Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar and her assertion that the statute was meant to be a broad obstruction provision.

Justice Clarence Thomas observed that there have been other violent protests that interfered with official proceedings. Have federal prosecutors "applied this provision to other protests in the past?" he asked.

Prelogar replied that the Justice Department has enforced the law, applying it in the past to cases that involved more than document destruction and evidence tampering.

Justice Neil Gorsuch asked whether "a sit-in that disrupts a trial or access to a federal courthouse qualify? Would a heckler in today's audience qualify or at the State of the Union address?"

Those actions would not meet the criteria of corruptly and intentionally violating this law, replied Prelogar.

Justice Samuel Alito followed up, posing this question: "Let's say that today while you're arguing, five people get up, and they shout either, 'Keep the Jan. 6 insurrectionists in jail,' or 'Free the Jan. 6 patriots.' And our police officers have to remove them forcibly" — would that be a violation of this statute?

"No," replied Prelogar, because the government doesn't think this statute picks up such "minimal" interferences with proceedings.

Justice Kagan interjected at this point, asking the solicitor general what sort of evidence the government typically presents in these Jan. 6 prosecutions. Prelogar replied that the government has to prove that the defendants specifically intended to disrupt the joint meeting of Congress where the electoral votes were to be counted.

"We have focused on things like preparation for violence, bringing tactical gear or paramilitary equipment to the Capitol," she said.

The Jan. 6 attack: The cases behind the biggest criminal investigation in U.S. history

Investigations

The jan. 6 attack: the cases behind the biggest criminal investigation in u.s. history.

Prelogar added that prosecutors have brought charges against 1,350 defendants in connection with Jan. 6, but because of the need to show intent to prevent the counting of the electoral ballots, only about 350 of those defendants have been charged with obstruction.

Addressing the concern voiced by several justices that the penalty for violating this provision carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, Prelogar said that the average sentence among the the individuals charged only with this obstruction statute is 26 months imprisonment, and the median has been 24 months. So, she contended, "There's no reasonable argument to be made that the statutory maximum here is driving anything with respect to sentencing."

Still, Chief Justice John Roberts remained doubtful, also probing whether the Justice Department has similarly applied this statute in other cases. Prelogar replied that there is a key difference between statutes that do not require an intent to obstruct and this one, which does have that proof of intent requirement.

That, however, didn't seem to allay the "concerns" of the remaining two conservative justices, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh noted there are six other counts in the indictment of the defendant in this case, including civil disorder and assault. "Why aren't those six counts good enough, just from the Justice Department's perspective, given that they don't have any hurdles?" he asked.

"Because those counts don't fully reflect the culpability of petitioner's conduct on Jan. 6," answered Prelogar. Fisher "had said in advance of Jan. 6 that he was prepared to storm the Capitol, prepared to use violence. He wanted to intimidate Congress. He said, 'They can't vote if they can't breathe.' And then he went to the Capitol on Jan. 6 with that intent in mind and took action, including assaulting a law enforcement officer."

If the court rules in favor of defendant Fischer, a number of the 350 people charged under the obstruction statute will likely have to be resentenced or released from prison. Indeed, some have already been conditionally released, pending the outcome of the case.

The obstruction section of the law is also the basis for at at least one, and arguably two, of the charges against Donald Trump in the election obstruction case currently pending against him in Washington, D.C. So, if the Supreme Court ultimately rules that both parts of the obstruction law are aimed at document and evidence manipulation, Trump's lawyers would almost certainly seek to have those counts dismissed.

Special counsel Jack Smith has indicated that regardless of how the Supreme Court rules in Tuesday's case, the charges against Trump would survive; because the former president is charged with creating slates of fake electors, Smith has said, that ties his conduct more firmly to both parts of the the obstruction statute.
