Safari Park Wild Holidays Guide and Review 2024

Where is the Safari Park Wild Holidays

Wild Holidays is hosted at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, San Diego North County, about 35 miles away from the San Diego Zoo (which is located near Downtown San Diego).

It’s not that far of a drive from downtown San Diego, but if there’s traffic it can take around 45 minutes. I recommend following our carsick hacks if you or your little ones get motion sickness on road trips.

What is included in the Safari Park Wild Holidays

The Wild Holidays event at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is included in the admission to the park .

There are various holiday entertainments, lights, music , and decorations spread throughout the park during the holiday season.

If you’re looking for an adventure to get your whole family into the holiday spirit, the Wild Holidays event at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park does not disappoint.

Be sure to print out a Travel Journal for your kids so they can record the adventure.

Wild Holidays Entertainment

  • Safari Parker (kid’s story time)
  • Holiday Troubadour (guitar)
  • Firefly Stilt Walkers
  • Turtle Doves (violins)
  • Sweater Weather (guitar & percussion)
  • Photos with Santa (Note: may not be available after 12/25)

If you do anything during Wild Holidays, see Safari Parker .

There was surprise snow at the end of Safari Parker’s “‘Twas the Night Before Wild Holidays,” a fun interactive story for the kids.

Our girls were mesmerized and we had bubbles all over our hair and Christmas sweaters!

The Firefly Stilt Walkers were super fun to see. We were talking with one Firefly, and he said his sister’s name was Evangeline (a subtle nod to the Princess and the Frog).

Our toddler preferred them from a distance, but still enjoyed their lights and wings. Try and get pictures with them before it gets too dark, but make sure to swing back around and see them fully lit up at night.

As for photos with Santa , there was no line when we went. This could change depending on the day and visitor count, but it seemed to be the pattern for Wild Holidays in 2021.

Santa was so helpful with getting the girls to smile for the photos and gave them each a candy cane after.

There was no cost to meet Santa during Wild Holidays, but pictures were available for purchase.

We got the package that included the print & digital downloads so we could have all of the photos and different border options.

Safari Park Wild Holidays Bridge of Lights

Wild Holidays Music to Lights Shows

  • Nairobi Lantern Walk
  • Light up the Holidays
  • Bridge of Lights

If you’re someone who loves Christmas lights , the Safari Park Wild Holidays music and light shows are a must.

The Bridge of Lights was absolutely stunning! The whole bridge to the tigers was lit up and synced to a variety of Christmas songs.

This is a long bridge too, so it’s not like a little tunnel that you quickly exit out of. The Safari Park light tunnel spans the entire length of the bridge leading up to the Tiger Trail and Walkabout Australia exhibits.

Plus, you need to go through it again to get back to the park entrance, so it’s set up very well to thoroughly enjoy the attraction.

2 little girls in front of trees decorated with Christmas lights.

The Safari Park Nairobi Lantern Walk was very pretty.

I was expecting it to just be some lights and background music, but the music was queued up to the flickering of the lanterns for a very holiday-filled ambiance.

Another light display I wasn’t sure about was Light up the Holidays , but it was super fun & got us all dancing!

You just never know if something like this will be just music or a one-song wonder. Different holiday music played from Safari Park Radio 197.2 while the lights danced around. The result was a combination of different colors, different patterns, and multiple songs. It was so awesome and queued up perfectly to the beat.

Wild Holidays Lights & Decor

  • The Spirit of the Season
  • Journey of Light
  • Baja Gardens

Beautiful decorations and great photo ops were everywhere in the Safari Park Wild Holiday areas.

There’s a large glowing “Wild Holidays” sign on the way to the Bridge of Lights. Again, I recommend taking your photo in the daylight but then swinging back around at night to see it all lit up.

If you head over to the elevator going down to the Lion Camp and African Loop enclosures, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful Christmas Tree and a stunning view of the Savannah.

Other glowing lights and decorations are scattered throughout the park, and the Baja Gardens receive their own special holiday lighting treatment.

Other Safari Park Wild Holidays Tips & Info

  • Get there Earlier to see Animals During the Day
  • Take Pictures before Dark
  • Check the Schedule for Entertainment Times

The later Safari Park Wild Holiday hours are more for just the Christmas event areas, so get there early if you want to see more animals .

We easily saw the tigers, kangaroos, and animals along the Nairobi Walk.

However, the entire area down by the elephants and Africa loop was closed off when it got dark.

Take pictures earlier then enjoy the scenery & lights at night .

I mentioned this earlier, but I can’t stress it enough. The lights are absolutely amazing, but if you want clear pictures and don’t have the best night photography skills (or kids who stay still during longer exposure times), then take the photos before dark and take the rest of the evening to just enjoy the holiday lights.

If you really want the lights to be on for your photos, you can get some decent pictures of the lights at dusk.

Many of the entertainment events are scheduled frequently throughout the night . I would pick which ones are a must-do and plan to be in that area around your preferred time (especially if you have a toddler who might start falling asleep).

Check-in with Santa Clause since he does have a break scheduled.

The Safari Park employees were very helpful in providing us with the info we needed. We made it to Safari Parker’s first performance and back to Santa before our toddler decided to take a nap .

NEWS RELEASE

Celebrate the Season with Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo, and Wild Holidays at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

SAN DIEGO (Dec. 20, 2022) – The magic of the holiday season returns, with two events full of  wild fun for the whole family: Jungle Bells Proudly Supported by California Coast Credit Union at the San Diego Zoo, and Wild Holidays at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Both events will treat guests to a winter wonderland of twinkling lights, live entertainment, festive music and culinary delights, along with awe-inspiring wildlife experiences.

Jungle Bells Proudly Supported by California Coast Credit Union—at the San Diego Zoo

During Jungle Bells, the San Diego Zoo will be filled with spectacular seasonal sights and sounds—and this year marks the first time the all-new Wildlife Explorers Basecamp will be open for the festivities. The Zoo will stay open until 8 p.m. for Jungle Bells fun through January 1, 2023 (except for December 24, 2022, when the Zoo closes at 5 p.m. and no Jungle Bells activities are scheduled).

Entertainment highlights include the a cappella quartet The Tinseltones, sharing their unique arrangements of holiday classics and bringing a dusting of snow to create a winter wonderland. The Holiday Troubadour, a strolling acoustic guitarist and singer; and Jingle Brass, a brass  ensemble, will also play holiday favorites throughout each evening. The Front Street Toog Tree has been illuminated with lights choreographed to an original holiday song to entertain guests every 30 minutes each night of Jungle Bells.

Guests can follow the Holiday Forest pathway to trek through holiday décor and specially designed illuminated trees to visit polar bears and reindeer. Or take part in Reindeer Games, as kids of all ages experience the interactive fun of holiday games and dances that get them up on their feet and in the spirit. Visit Santa himself for a photo opportunity, or pose with his friendly helpers—Zoo characters Dr. Harry Lion, Churchill Polar Bear, Sydney Koala and all their friends.

The inimitable Dr. Zoolittle gets in the holiday spirit, telling his own zany, interactive version of the classic seasonal story: Dr. Zoolittle’s “One Wild Night Before Christmas.” During Toy Shop Hop, Santa’s acrobatic elves will show off their bouncing and high-flying holiday magic in an amazing display of skill and athleticism. Jack Frost will bring a magical winter chill to the air as he shows off his skills juggling snowballs and icicles. And between performances, guests can fuel up with an abundance of culinary delights at the Zoo’s many restaurants and food stands.

Zoo guests won’t want to miss the nightly magic of Aurora, the popular twice-per-night spectacular, weaving 3D projection mapping, music and lights to highlight the beauty of wind, water and ice. This year, guests can interact with the show by purchasing all-new Aurora Bubble Scepters, which glow and bubble during portions of each evening performance. For a special VIP experience, guests can make reservations for a delicious pre-show dinner at Albert's Restaurant and a reserved priority viewing area to watch the magic of Aurora.

The San Diego Zoo is once again welcoming California Coast Credit Union as the proud supporter of Jungle Bells 2022. With over 25 branches in Southern California, California Coast is the longest-serving financial institution in San Diego County, having been founded in 1929 by teachers.

Jungle Bells activities are free with Zoo admission or membership. Parking is free. To learn more, visit sandiegozoo.org/junglebells .

Wild Holidays—at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

‘Tis the season! Wild Holidays invites guests to experience the wonders of the Safari Park with a special holiday twist. This year marks the Safari Park’s 50th anniversary, and that provides one more reason for a spectacular celebration.

Throughout the Safari Park, holiday tunes will set the mood. The Safari Park’s very own radio station returns with a mix of contemporary and traditional sounds of the season. In addition, the Holiday Troubadour, an acoustic musician, will encourage guests of all ages to sing along; and the violin duo Turtle Doves will play holiday favorites in a classical, symphonic style. Plus, fan-favorite traveling guitar and percussion performers Sweater Weather will entertain with acoustic renditions of festive holiday songs.

Guests can visit Santa, the jolly ol’ elf himself, for a photo through Christmas Day, before he travels back to the North Pole. On the way, they will encounter magnificent firefly stilt walkers, or they can join adventurer extraordinaire Safari Parker for interactive fun and surprises as he reads his original holiday story, “‘Twas the Night Before Wild Holidays.”

At Wild Holidays, the Safari Park is aglow with incredible light displays. Not only is the giant, 24-foot, themed holiday tree with wildlife decorations a must-see, but a variety of other trees light up, choreographed to custom holiday soundtracks in two different shows titled, “Light Up the Holidays.” Guests can take an expedition through the musical and magical lighted archway Bridge of Lights, check out the Forest of Color, see the Baja Gardens in a whole new light, or journey down the Nairobi Lantern Walk. The specially designed, beautifully decorated areas of the Park make the perfect setting for a family photo.

Celebrate the holiday season and commemorate 50 years of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park with a memorable evening presentation at Enchanted Lagoon, titled “Reflections: Our Moment.” During this colorful spectacle, floating, flickering lanterns dance in a choreographed celebration to an original world music soundtrack.

Wild Holidays is scheduled December 17–23 and 26–31, 2022; and January 1, 2023. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. during this event, with Wild Holidays festivities beginning at 4 p.m.

Wild Holidays activities are free with Safari Park admission or membership. Parking is $15 per vehicle; $20 per RV. Vehicle parking is free for members at Wildlife Protector and higher membership levels . To learn more, visit sdzsafaripark.org/wild-holidays .

SAFARI PARK'S MAGICAL CHRISTMAS EVENT IS BACK

safari park at christmas

From 25 November and running daily until Christmas Eve, guests will have the chance to see Santa during the day, or on selected dates, visit Santa in his grotto during the evening’s Lantern Festival event.

Ahead of the month-long celebration, Santa had a good look around the Park’s Discovery Trail, which has been transformed into a winter wonderland, with over 400 Christmas trees, lights, baubles, new photo points and even thick layers of ‘snow’.

Additionally, the Park has installed two amazing winter lantern scenes, which look incredible during the day, but really come to life when the sun sets.

Bethan Davis, PR & Events Officer, said, “We are so excited to welcome guests to this year’s Santa Safari, as the Park has never looked this magical. Our team of ‘elves’ have been working really hard to make sure everything is perfect for Santa’s arrival, with not a garland, tree or bauble out of place!

“This year, we’ve installed a whole host of brand-new features, including a gigantic Christmas tree, two photo points for children, animated characters in the grotto and our outdoor sleigh has been transformed. Children will be able to experience falling ‘snow’ and write a letter to Santa too, which they can post in our cheeky talking post-box. Santa has given everything his seal of approval, so has now retired to his cosy grotto, ready to meet families from Friday. We hope everyone has a magical and festive time with us.”

Guests to the grotto will be greeted by Santa’s team of friendly elves who will magically transport families to the North Pole on Santa’s sleigh, captained by a new welcoming owl.

Disembarking the sleigh, they will follow a path through a magical winter wonderland, busy elf workshop and reindeer stables, finally reaching the grotto to pay a visit to the big man himself.

Children will receive a memento of their day by having a picture taken of themselves with Santa which they can then take home, alongside being able to choose their very own present from the elves’ workshop.

Also included in the package is a visit to Mrs Claus’ Kitchen, where children can enjoy a drink and cookie, whilst adults are treated to a hot drink and mince pie.

There is also the chance for guests to win a Family Annual Pass, by entering the ‘Letters to Santa’ competition, where children can write a letter to Santa and post it in his magical talking post box.

Additionally, guests visiting this winter can experience a virtual reality sleigh ride – a magical 4D adventure to the North Pole, helping Santa to test out his sleigh before his big journey on Christmas Eve.

As Santa Safari coincides with the Park’s Lantern Festival event, a variety of ticketing options are available, including an evening ticket which includes lanterns and an ‘Ultimate Winter Ticket’, which includes a day visit to Santa Safari, all the animal attractions, talks and shows, then Lantern Festival on the evening.

Tickets can be booked in advance via the Park’s website, where guests can also see the calendar of events: www.wmsp.co.uk/tickets .

Santa Safari runs from 25 November until Christmas Eve, and the charge is £33.00 for adults and children aged 3-64, £13.00 for under 3s and £30.00 for concessions. Adventure Theme Park rides are not open during the winter season.

Further information about West Midland Safari Park is available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. Find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/WestMidSafari .

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Review

Christmas is now starting to feel like a distant memory but thankfully we’ve still got our fantastic festive days out to look back on. After previously visiting Chester Zoo Lanterns, we were interested to see Knowsley offering a similar experience. Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park seemed to be a smaller version of what Chester Zoo offered and while you don’t walk around carrying lanterns, the light up animals looked really affective. We therefore decided to book tickets to see how the two compared.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park Prices

The main selling point of Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park is the relatively low price. We bought the tickets online , and they cost just £7.50 each for both children and adults, with kids under three going free. We opted to pay an additional £7.50 per child so they also got Santa’s grotto included in the price.

What Is The Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park?

The event starts after dark and runs from mid November to just before Christmas. You book your tickets for a specific day and you can enter any time between 4.30pm and 7pm, with the park closing at 8pm. Santa’s grotto is booked for a specific time so you want to organise your entry so you don’t miss your slot.

The Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park consists of an illuminated trail through the foot safari where you can spot brightly lit animals on your way around. As with Chester Zoo, you don’t actually get to see the real animals, just their illuminated recreations.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Our Experience

We’ve visited Knowsley Safari Park in the Winte r before, but only for the traditional safari. We were therefore excited to see what the evening had in store.

We had pre-booked our Santa’s visit for 6pm, so arrived at Knowsley for 5pm. We were able to park the car easily (free of charge) and made our way to the admissions. We were told we would have enough time to complete the illuminated trail before our allocated time for the grotto so we set off to find our favourite animals.

The animal lanterns were very similar to the ones we saw at Chester Zoo, just on a smaller scale. All our favourites were there, including zebra, tigers, and reindeer.

My daughter has an obsession with penguins after watching Mr Popper’s Penguins the week before so she was delighted to spot her favourite animal in all their illuminated glory!

safari park at christmas

Midway through the trail there was the chance to toast some marshmallows which the children loved. There wasn’t an additional fee like there was at Dunham Massey’s Christmas Lights . There was also room for the kids to sit down and enjoy their treat.

safari park at christmas

The trail lasted approximately 30 minutes which isn’t as long as the trails at Chester Zoo and Dunham Massey but considering the low price we felt it was still good value for money.

Santa’s Grotto

Despite having pre-booked we still need to join a queue to see Santa at our allotted time. The wait wasn’t overly long though, only around 15 minutes. The waiting area was nicely decorated and festive and the time soon passed.

safari park at christmas

When at the front of the queue we were greeted by an enthusiastic elf who had the kids giggling. Even our usually surly non-believer, who goes along with it all for his younger siblings, was caught laughing! They then went through to meet the big man himself and told him what they’d like for Christmas. They were each given a gift, all of which were unwrapped so they could actually choose something they wanted. Each gift had an animal theme in keeping with the surroundings.

Food and Rides

After the trail and visiting Santa we head to one of the stalls selling refreshments and sat down for a drink and a warm up next to the heaters. My husband had a rather disgusting hot chocolate (more hot water than hot chocolate), while the kids and I safely enjoyed our soft drinks. There was the opportunity to make hot drinks more festive with a shot of brandy or Baileys for an additional fee.

There were plenty of rides for the kids to enjoy, as there is when you visit during the day time. The prices were the same, £2 per child or £10 for an unlimited wristband. We opted for unlimited wristbands for the kids because we knew they’d only need to go on six rides each to make it worth the money.

There are plenty of rides to make the wristbands worth it and the kids had a great time. We actually stayed ride up until closing time. It was much quieter after 7pm so they were able to just walk on whatever ride they wanted without there being any queue. They probably managed over ten rides each before the park closed. We like to get our money’s worth!

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Summary

While Enchanted Christmas At Knowsley Safari Park isn’t on the same scale as Chester Zoo’s Lanterns, we still had a great time. The trail had the majority of the animals we would want to see including zebra, giraffes, tigers, and reindeer.  It’s an event that’s as expensive as you wish it to be. If you simply wanted to do the lights for £7.50 each you could easily do so. It’s just the additions fees of Santa and the rides that can make the evening a more expensive one.

The event was well organised with staff on hand to help, and despite the queue for Santa it all ran smoothly. We would definitely visit again in 2020.

Looks Totally delightful, and one for the to do list for next year for sure.

' src=

I sometimes find the smaller Christmas affairs can be just as good as the big, grand attractions. They are normally less crowded and have a more intimate vibe because of that. I’m glad you enjoyed this and just sorry that they can’t make a decent hot chocolate! C x

' src=

im a massve fan of xmas, and have been to many xmas themed places, but some of these displays are great! i want them in my garden lol! let alone a safari park, but it looks like a great place to visit.

' src=

The light up animals look amazing! But a bit pricey I think, as your not seeing real animals. We have a farm park with loads of animals and costs the same has this.

' src=

I do love festive days out with light displays and this sounds like a great evening out

' src=

I went to something similar to this at Kew gardens a few years back and it was lovely, that’s such a good price as well x

' src=

Oh this looks so good. I love the animals there that light up so pretty.

' src=

Wow this looks like such a magical experience. I can’t believe amazing the animal lanterns look. Would love to take my kids to something like this.

' src=

Aw looks like you all had an amazing family fun adventure for sure. Happy days xx
