Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

Protect your trip: Search, compare and buy the best travel insurance plans for the lowest price. Get a quote .

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

What does TravelSafe insurance cover?

Travelsafe travel insurance plans and costs, which travelsafe insurance plan is best for me, can you buy a travelsafe plan online, what isn’t covered by travelsafe, travelsafe travel insurance, recapped.

insurance-product-card-logo

  • Covers up to $300 redepositing points and miles on eligible canceled award flights.
  • Optional add-on protection for business equipment or sports rentals.
  • Multi-trip or year-long plans aren’t available.

Are you wondering whether or not you should buy travel insurance? There are several travel insurance companies out there offering protection from unexpected events like illness, flight cancellations and lost baggage. TravelSafe insurance is one such provider — it features a range of protections to give you peace of mind when on the road.

Let’s take a look at TravelSafe trip insurance, the types of plans it offers and how to choose the right plan for you.

Both TravelSafe plans cover travel mishaps such as trip cancellation, lost luggage and missed connections. They also include some coverage for emergency medical procedures and evacuations. However, the higher-level TravelSafe Classic plan offers additional coverage, such as accidental death and dismemberment coverage and non-medical evacuation.

The amount of coverage for each benefit differs between plans, as well. And additional add-ons (such as Cancel for Any Reason coverage), can be applied to either, for additional fees.

Before you purchase travel insurance , you’ll first want to decide what type of plan you need. There are multiple types available depending on what you’re doing, where you’re going and how much coverage you want.

TravelSafe insurance offers two different plan types: Basic and Classic. Both of them only cover single trips; the company doesn’t sell multi-trip or year-long plans .

TravelSafe Basic

The TravelSafe Basic plan offers a lower level of protection than the company’s more expensive option, TravelSafe Classic.

To get an idea of the cost and coverage you’d get with a TravelSafe Basic plan, we put in a search for a 32-year-old woman going on a two-week trip to multiple countries. The total estimated trip cost was $4,500.

The TravelSafe Basic plan came back with a total cost of $177 and included trip cancellation coverage up to $10,000, trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay coverage, and $35,000 for emergency medical , among other benefits.

TravelSafe also offers medical insurance-focused plans through a partnership with Trawick International . These plans are much cheaper than the Basic or Classic options but lack some of the other plans’ benefits.

TravelSafe Classic

As the higher tier of travel insurance, TravelSafe's Classic plan includes greater benefits than TravelSafe Basic. Using the same search parameters, the total cost for a TravelSafe Classic plan came out to $234 — $57 more than the Basic plan.

However, with this level of coverage, policy holders get trip cancellation of up to $100,000, as well as $100,000 worth of emergency medical and $2,500 worth of coverage for lost luggage. This can be a smart plan to purchase if you are traveling with expensive items in your suitcases, such as photography equipment or jewelry.

The two plans compared

The coverage levels vary pretty significantly between TravelSafe's Basic and Classic plans, although the price difference between the two isn’t huge.

Here are some of the most important differences in coverage levels between the two plans:

As we mentioned above, there are different types of coverage available based on your needs. Before you make a purchase, be sure to consider all your options.

If you’re going on a simple, short round trip: TravelSafe Basic might be good enough option.

If you’ll be going on adventurous or longer trips: Consider the TravelSafe Classic, which offers way more coverage for not that much more.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so the TravelSafe Basic option might be enough.

Consider optional add-ons

TravelSafe’s insurance also offers the ability to add extra coverage. This includes rental car insurance , Cancel For Any Reason insurance (CFAR), and accidental death and dismemberment coverage during flights.

See if you have existing coverage

Many credit cards offer travel insurance as a benefit. This insurance is complimentary and automatic as long as you have paid for your travel with your card. While coverage will vary depending on the card you use, you’ll commonly see credit cards cover rental car insurance, trip cancellation insurance, emergency medical insurance and lost luggage insurance.

Before buying any travel insurance plan, check your credit card benefit guides to see what they may already cover.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

Yes. The first step to buying a TravelSafe plan is navigating to its website at travelsafe.com .

safe travel company

From the homepage, you’ll want to select the blue box that says “Get a Quote.” You’ll then be taken to a page asking for your personal information, including dates of travel, age and state of residence.

safe travel company

After you’ve filled in the information, you’ll be presented with quotes for both of TravelSafe’s plans. Once you’ve chosen a plan, you’ll go through the checkout process to purchase your travel insurance.

If you’re the type of person who likes to hang out in restaurants and visit museums during your vacation, it’s likely your travel insurance will cover you if something unexpected happens.

However, if you tend to find yourself doing more extreme activities, like skydiving or scuba diving, you’ll want to give the fine print of your travel insurance a closer look. Most plans have specific exclusions for high-risk activities, in addition to acts of self harm and other designated events.

» Learn more: How much is travel insurance?

TravelSafe’s two travel insurance plans offer comprehensive coverage for when you’re away from home. Compare the benefits of each before deciding on a purchase — and be sure to double-check whether you already have existing coverage from a travel credit card .

The answer to this question will depend on what type of traveler you are and the kind of trip you’re taking. Do you have a credit card with insurance that seems sufficient, or would you like extra coverage? Either way, it’s a personal decision — you should do whatever gives you peace of mind.

Yes, TravelSafe offers both trip and medical insurance. You’ll want to check out TravelSafe reviews and read up on its plan benefits to decide which coverage level is appropriate for your needs.

Although TravelSafe has just two plans, prices vary based on the trip you’re taking. Factors that may affect the cost of your insurance include the length of your trip, how much it costs, your destination, and whether or not you include any add-on coverage.

Yes, TravelSafe offers international travel insurance. There are two types of products offered by the company, with varying levels of coverage; read TravelSafe insurance reviews to help decide which plan suits you.

TravelSafe Travel Insurance Review — Is It Worth It?

Why Purchase Travel Insurance

Travel insurance and covid-19, why purchase travel insurance from travelsafe, trip protection plans, travel medical plans, policies for golfers, policies for canadians, how to obtain a quote, best for comprehensive travel insurance plans, best for travel medical plans, travelsafe vs. other travel insurance companies, travelsafe vs. credit card insurance, how to file a claim with travelsafe, final thoughts.

See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

With every trip, there’s a chance something could go wrong. Your first flight could be delayed, causing you to miss a connection. You could get sick or injured. Maybe your luggage doesn’t show up at your destination. For any of these situations, you may have considered buying travel insurance. Whether you’re looking for a detailed policy that covers everything or a policy that covers one specific aspect of your trip, it’s likely available and affordable.

TravelSafe Insurance has been offering services to travelers since 1971. This privately-held company provides travel insurance plans for solo and family travelers, as well as business, student, and group travelers, plus plans aimed at golfers and Canadians. There are also medical-only plans, and all plans have 24-hour emergency assistance.

Before discussing the ins and outs of TravelSafe plans, let’s first look at why you might want to purchase travel insurance, then discuss why TravelSafe could be right for you. We’ll also discuss its plans, how they compare to other travel insurance providers, and how TravelSafe compares to the insurance available on several travel-focused credit cards.

Travel insurance is meant to protect the money you’ve spent toward a trip against losses; it’s also meant to protect you against additional expenses from the unexpected. That could include trips canceled at the last minute because of weather or hospital expenses if you become sick or injured while on vacation.

Travel insurance could help you with some of the following:

  • You fall and break a bone during a hiking trip, needing to spend time in a hospital.
  • Your child becomes ill shortly before a trip, and you have to cancel to stay home to care for them.
  • You break a tooth when sampling local delicacies and need immediate dental care, but your health insurance policy from home isn’t in effect at your destination.
  • Fighting breaks out at your intended destination, and it’s no longer safe to travel there.

The more nonrefundable expenses there are in your trip, and the more risks you’ll be taking during the trip, the more it makes sense to consider a travel insurance policy to protect you from financial losses.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many travelers had to change, cancel, or postpone their trips. Others found themselves with escalating costs after testing positive at their destination and needing to quarantine.

While these sound like typical situations covered by travel insurance, that may not be the case. Some companies have excluded COVID-19 from coverage under the terms of visiting areas with a known pandemic — terms introduced in the past, before the current pandemic.

Additionally, choosing to voluntarily cancel your trip for fear of getting sick or testing positive , thus not wanting to deal with the encumbrances, isn’t covered by travel insurance.

For a travel insurance policy to include coverage for COVID-19 , such as medical expenses or expenses related to quarantine, you must ensure the policy specifically lists COVID-19 as a covered reason. If not, you may need to add Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance . This is an optional add-on available for some policies, and adding it to yours will include additional costs.

Make sure you read the terms of any policy you’re considering so you know what aspects it does and doesn’t cover related to COVID-19.

Luckily, TravelSafe treats COVID-19 like other sicknesses rather than exempting it from coverage as a known pandemic. That means testing positive or getting sick can be covered by your policy without needing any special additions. Further details on the covered reasons , such as the threshold for testing types sufficient for a positive test, can be found online.

Before choosing a travel insurance company, ensuring the company is reliable and reputable should be your first consideration.

TravelSafe has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau , an average rating of 4.3/5 on the travel insurance website Squaremouth (from 1,499 reviews), and a 4/5 average rating on consumeraffairs.com . Moreover, it is backed by the United States Fire Insurance Company, which has an A (Excellent) rating from financial rating company A.M. Best . Based on this, you can infer TravelSafe is reliable and worth considering for your next travel insurance purchase.

TravelSafe offers general and specific policies, providing options more likely to meet your needs. TravelSafe also offers CFAR (Cancel for Any Reason) insurance for those who need it. Let’s look at the possibilities.

Types of Policies Available

TravelSafe offers several types of travel insurance. Let’s look at the options within each type separately, as knowing what is included and what isn’t is important when evaluating your options.

These plans are available only for U.S. citizens or residents; coverage applies to domestic and international trips . Coverage within the Basic and Classic plans is divided into protecting your travel arrangements and coverage for your health and belongings. Here are the details of travel arrangement protections:

The key differences between the Basic and Classic plans include maximum coverage amounts and what the Classic plan offers that the Basic plan doesn’t. The Classic plan reimburses itinerary changes, pet kennel fees, and the option to add CFAR coverage. It also offers higher maximum payouts in every category.

These are the maximum coverage amounts for health and belongings:

Both plans include worldwide travel assistance to provide information and referrals during your trips.

The key differences come in maximum payout amounts in all categories and offerings the Basic plan doesn’t have. These are evacuation for political or natural disasters and 24-hour accidental death and dismemberment coverage. Both plans have optional additions for rental car damage, sporting equipment rentals, and flight-specific death and dismemberment coverage .

Both plans allow for a waiver of exclusions for preexisting medical conditions , provided you make a deposit on your plan within 21 days of the first deposit for your trip and be fit to travel at the time of purchase.

TravelSafe travel medical insurance start quote page

These plans are offered through Trawick International . By providing information about your origin, destination, start and end dates of your coverage, and age(s) of the traveler(s), you can compare plan options.

These primarily focus on medical coverage, such as sickness, dental, death, evacuation, and dismemberment. Plans also should provide primary medical coverage. However, they include some travel-focused, non-medical coverage, such as baggage delay and loss protections, trip delay, and trip interruption.

TravelSafe GolfSafe plan comparisons

GolfSafe plans are underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. To see pricing and plan details, you’ll start by providing your origin and destination, trip dates, the date of your first deposit, the age(s) of the traveler(s), and the cost of the trip.

It’s important to note that both the Secure and Secure Plus plans provide excess coverage secondary to what may be provided by an airline, your homeowner’s insurance, or other providers. Both plans can provide the coverage you usually associate with travel insurance — such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, itinerary change fees, trip delays, and more — but rental car damage and accidental death and dismemberment are optional add-ons.

Coverage maximums are the same in all categories , which is surprising. The real difference is the addition of CFAR coverage to the Secure Plus plan; this protection applies if you purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip deposit (not available to NY or WA residents).

Interestingly, while these plans cover what you might think of for golfers — such as needing to rent clubs if the airline doesn’t deliver yours on time or lost prepaid green fees if your flight is delayed — you also can be reimbursed for the cost of buying drinks at the clubhouse if you or a traveling companion gets a hole-in-one .

TravelSafe Canadian policies comparison prices

The Basic and Classic plans detailed above are only available for U.S. citizens and residents. For Canadians, provide your destination country, age(s) of traveler(s), and trip cost. Two plan levels exist: Elite and Elite Package with optional CFAR.

Both plans provide the same coverage and coverage amounts in all areas but one: CFAR. The more expensive option offers Cancel for Any Reason coverage of up to 75% of your nonrefundable insured costs with a maximum of $100,000.

The Value of Travel Insurance Comparison Sites

Numerous travel insurance companies exist, each with multiple offerings. Comparing TravelSafe insurance policies against one another is relatively simple, but what if you want to compare these against other travel insurance companies? Enter the comparison websites.

  • Squaremouth — Use this site to search for single-trip, annual, group, and sports/adventure travel insurance plans. While some plans may include medical coverage, you can’t use this site to search for medical-only coverage.
  • TravelInsurance.com — Use this site to compare travel insurance plans that include travel medical insurance. However, no stand-alone travel medical plans are available.
  • InsureMyTrip — Use this site to compare single and multi-trip travel medical policies; you also can search for comprehensive travel insurance plans.

How TravelSafe Travel Insurance Compares — Summary

To compare TravelSafe against competitors, we used Squaremouth to obtain a quote for 2 travelers from California, ages 35 and 34, going to Colombia for a week in March 2024. We estimated the trip cost as $800 per traveler, with the first trip deposit made in the last 24 hours.

Here’s how TravelSafe’s Classic plan compares to Trawick’s Safe Travels First Class and WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred :

Squaremouth comparison of Trawick WorldTrips TravelSafe

TravelSafe’s plan is the most expensive at $126, while WorldTrips is charging $109 and Trawick is charging $113.43. Beyond the cost difference, let’s review the key differences in the plans.

Trawick offers $150,000 of emergency medical coverage, while WorldTrips and TravelSafe offer only $100,000. However, only TravelSafe’s plan provides primary coverage here . Moreover, only TravelSafe’s plan offers evacuation for non-medical reasons, such as political instability at your destination. But TravelSafe is also the only provider not allowing coverage extension if you’re forced to spend extra time at your destination through canceled flights or COVID-19-related quarantines.

Trawick provides the highest daily limit ($200) during travel delays, but it has the lowest maximum payout ($1,000) and requires a 12-hour delay. WorldTrips and TravelSafe provide up to $100 per day and up to $2,000 maximum, with WorldTrips providing coverage after a 5-hour delay and TravelSafe at 6 hours. All 3 plans provide baggage delay benefits after 12 hours, but TravelSafe’s coverage of $250 per person is the lowest. Conversely, TravelSafe has the highest maximum payout for lost luggage at $2,500 per person.

TravelSafe also has the highest maximum payout for 24-hour accidental death and dismemberment ($25,000 per person), but only Trawick automatically includes death and dismemberment coverage on a common carrier (up to $25,000 per person). And when it comes to sports and activities on your trip, TravelSafe is the only provider that does not include coverage for these activities.

Regarding trip delays from weather, Trawick is the worst, requiring a 48-hour delay.

Trawick also requires you to be at your job for 5 years before the layoff coverage kicks in if you lose your job and can’t go on your trip.

However, many aspects of these plans are the same, such as trip cancellation and interruption benefits, coverage for COVID-19 sickness, the ability to cover preexisting conditions (if specific terms are met), medical evacuation, and the option to add CFAR coverage.

You may have a credit card that provides travel insurance . Many travel-focused credit cards offer coverage sufficient for straightforward vacations, inexpensive trips, or those without significant nonrefundable costs. However, this type of coverage doesn’t include everything a comprehensive travel insurance policy might offer.

For comparison, let’s put TravelSafe’s premium policy (Classic) side by side with 2 premium credit cards offering robust insurance coverage: The Platinum Card ® from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® . Before we get started, note that enrollment may be required for some of the Amex benefits described below.

It’s also worth noting that insurance policies on these credit cards are built-in, while purchasing a plan from TravelSafe will have an additional cost.

These credit cards look like they provide excellent coverage at first glance, but some coverage types are secondary. That means they kick in after your other coverage, such as homeowner’s insurance, auto insurance, or healthcare plan at home. You’d have to deal with those insurance companies first, meaning your auto insurance plan could be more expensive if you file a claim for a fender-bender on vacation. Travel insurance policies offering primary coverage mean you deal straight with them as your first point of contact. And while TravelSafe’s Classic plan doesn’t provide higher payouts for accidental death and dismemberment, it does provide higher maximums for emergency medical, emergency evacuation, and trip cancellation.

It’s possible to file a claim online and by phone. You can call toll-free in the U.S. at 877-539-6729 . It’s also possible to start your claim online .

TravelSafe submit a claim page

You’ll start by providing your name and policy ID. From here, you’ll provide details about your claim, such as the reason and any costs you incurred, and attach relevant documents.

It’s important to provide as many documents as possible related to your claim. Receipts, doctor notes, a statement from the airline noting the delay and anything else you can gather will help claim evaluators process your claim more efficiently. You also should clearly explain what happened, focusing on facts and being brief. Anything you can do to help the claim evaluator understand what happened and assess your claim efficiently will benefit both parties.

While TravelSafe doesn’t provide a specific deadline for evaluating your claim and providing a decision, understand that this process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks with many providers. Thus, you should expect the same here.

Numerous travel insurance providers exist, and TravelSafe may not be the first name you think of. However, TravelSafe has a few advantages. Policies are easy to understand and compare when shopping through the website, additional policies focused on golfers and Canadians can help you get a tailored plan that fits your needs, and costs are similar to the competition when looking at comparable policies.

However, there are things you should consider before purchasing from TravelSafe. For example, other companies offer plans tailored to extreme sports ; if you’re bungee jumping or scuba diving on your next vacation, you might look into these plans, as extreme sports are excluded from TravelSafe’s plans .

However, if you’re looking for a plan that provides the most common types of coverage, is easy to understand, and can be purchased at a fair price with just a few clicks, TravelSafe may offer what you’re looking for.

TravelSafe Insurance is a travel insurance company that's been around since 1971. It has an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau and is one of the last privately owned and operated travel companies in the nation. It offers two primary coverages: travel insurance for travelers and for golfers. While its policies differ by state, you can find all the information you need in this review.

TravelSafe Travel Insurance Review: Types of Policies Offered

TravelSafe has two main policies for those seeking travel insurance: travel insurance for stateside and international travelers and travel insurance for those who are planning golf trips. For each policy type, travelers can choose between classic and basic coverage. And golfers can choose between GolfSafe Secure and GolfSafe Secure Plus.

Here's how the two TravelSafe travel insurance plans stack up in terms of what's included and coverage limits:

TravelSafe also offers specific golf insurance plans, which is something incredibly unique among travel insurance companies. If you're an avid golfer, purchasing golfing insurance will cover things like lost holes, something regular travel insurance won't.

Ensure you check your state's particular benefits, but TravelSafe's golf insurance plan benefits are as follows:

Additional coverage options from TravelSafe

If you're concerned about getting sick on your trip, you can purchase travel medical insurance with TravelSafe (partnering with Trawick International ). You can purchase up to 180 days of coverage. As part of this package, you can choose your deductible, policy maximums, and primary or excess coverage.

TravelSafe Travel Insurance Cost

The short answer is it depends.

A domestic trip that costs you approximately $2,500 will be around $100 for a single traveler for the TravelSafe Basic plan and $130 for the Classic plan.

But if you're traveling internationally, the cost will be more. A trip that covers multiple countries for two weeks and costs approximately $5,000 will cost you $200 for the Basic plan and $265 for the Classic plan. These premiums are in line with the average cost of travel insurance, which will generally be between 4-8% of the total trip cost.

TravelSafe Travel Insurance vs Faye Travel Insurance

Faye is a completely digital travel insurance company. Unlike TravelSafe , Faye completely covers all cruise travel. Faye doesn't cover golf trips as TravelSafe does. They have similar amounts of coverage, but Faye is about $20 cheaper for its comparable international plans.

Faye covers your trip, your health, and your belongings just like TravelSafe does. But with Faye, you can add different things that meet your needs, like car rental, extreme sports, and pet care.

TravelSafe Travel Insurance vs World Nomads Travel Insurance

TravelSafe is an excellent option if you're traveling and participating in regular activities, like trying different foods and basic activities, like taking a train to places. But if you want to do extreme sports, it might not be the right coverage for you. Instead, consider getting a travel insurance plan like World Nomads . World Nomads covers over 100 different extreme sports, and you can specifically add on different sports that you want to try. It's a better coverage insurance plan for someone who's a little bit more adventurous.

That said, if you're only planning on doing a specific activity, like golfing, TravelSafe has a plan for you. They cover golfing trips specifically with more coverage than World Nomads.

TravelSafe vs Credit Card Travel Insurance

Some credit cards, especially travel rewards cards, come with travel benefits such as primary rental car insurance for your vehicle if you decide to rent one. However, travel insurance is generally more comprehensive than credit card coverage. For example, TravelSafe offers benefits like death and dismemberment coverage; credit cards don't typically cover this benefit.

However, you can use both your credit card benefits and your travel insurance to get the fullest coverage possible.

Best for missed connections

TravelSafe

Top-scoring plan

Medical limit per person, medical evacuation limit per person, what you should know.

If you’re worried that missed connections could disrupt your trip, it’s worth considering TravelSafe. Some travel insurance companies only provide missed connection coverage for cruises and tours, but TravelSafe doesn’t impose that restriction.

  • Best-in-class $2,500 per person in missed connection coverage.
  • $1 million per person in medical evacuation and $25,000 in non-medical evacuation coverage.
  • Generous $2,500 per person baggage and personal items loss benefit.
  • Most expensive of the top-scoring travel insurance plans.
  • No “interruption for any reason” coverage available.
  • Weak baggage delay coverage of $250 per person after 12 hours.

TravelSafe travel insurance overview

TravelSafe insurance offers two travel insurance plans: Basic and Classic. Upgrading to the Classic plan increases your coverage to best-in-class missed connection and medical evacuation benefits. The TravelSafe Classic plan receives a 5-star rating in our analysis of the best travel insurance plans .

TravelSafe’s optional coverages include protection for rented sports equipment, cars and business equipment. With the Classic plan, you can also add “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses you for up to 75% of your nonrefundable insured trip expenses.

We break down both plans in this TravelSafe travel insurance review, including sample pricing and common exclusions.

TravelSafe travel insurance plans

TravelSafe offers two travel insurance plans to choose from: Basic and Classic. While both plans provide coverage for travel arrangements, medical, belongings and worldwide travel assistance, there are key coverage differences between the two. The Classic plan also offers additional benefits you won’t find in the Basic plan.

TravelSafe Basic plan

  • Trip cancellation. The TravelSafe Basic insurance policy includes trip cancellation insurance for 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses, up to $10,000 per person.
  • Trip interruption. This plan also provides up to 100% trip interruption for nonrefundable trip costs.
  • Missed connections. If you miss your trip connection by more than three hours, the Basic plan will reimburse up to $500.
  • Trip delay. For trip delays longer than six hours, you’ll receive up to $100 daily for covered expenses, or a maximum of $1,000.
  • Travel medical. The Basic plan provides up to $35,000 for accident and sickness travel medical insurance and up to $750 as primary coverage for dental expenses.
  • Emergency medical evacuation. The plan covers up to $100,000 in emergency medical evacuation expenses or repatriation of remains.
  • Baggage. You get up to $500 reimbursement for baggage and personal effects reimbursement for covered losses. The policy will pay up to $100 if your bags are delayed more than 12 hours.

TravelSafe Classic plan

The TravelSafe Classic plan is the same as the Basic plan, with enhanced benefits.

  • Trip cancellation and interruption. You’ll get up to $100,000 per person for trip cancellation and up to 150% of the non-refundable insured trip cost for trip interruption.
  • Missed connections. The Classic plan will reimburse up to $2,500 if you miss a connection by over three hours.
  • Trip delay. The trip delay coverage reimburses up to $150 per day with a maximum of $2,000 for delays over six hours.
  • Travel medical. The medical coverage in the Classic plan offers the same $750 dental expense sub-limit but increases the accident and sickness medical coverage up to $100,000.
  • Emergency evacuation. There is up to $1 million in medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. There is also coverage of up to $25,000 for political or security evacuation and natural disaster evacuation. If you are accidentally dismembered or killed during your travel within 24 hours outside of being on a flight, the Classic plan will provide up to $25,000.
  • Baggage. For baggage and personal effects, you’ll get up to $2,500 instead of the $500 with the Basic plan. And baggage delay coverage increases up to $250 if delayed 12 hours or more.
  • Pet kennel. The Classic plan includes up to $100 per day for pet kennel coverage.

Other coverage options offered

TravelSafe insurance offers several optional coverages that some travelers may find beneficial.

“Cancel-for-any-reason” (CFAR) coverage

TravelSafe’s “cancel for any reason” coverage allows you to expand the reasons you can cancel your trip. If you cancel the trip at least two days before your departure date, you can be reimbursed for up to 75% of the prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost.

This option is only available on the Classic plan and is unavailable to New York residents.

Extended personal property benefits

This optional add-on coverage extends your baggage and personal effects coverage. With this coverage, if you rent sports equipment for your trip and it’s damaged by a common carrier, lost or stolen, you can receive up to $1,000 reimbursement. It also will pay if the equipment is delayed on a common carrier by at least 12 hours.

This coverage also provides up to $1,000 in coverage for items typically not included, like:

  • Professional or occupational equipment or property.
  • Telephones.
  • PDA devices.
  • Computer software or hardware.

This optional coverage is available on both plans. There is a $100 deductible if you file a claim.

Air flight only accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D)

Air flight AD&D coverage is available on both the Basic and Classic plans. You can choose up to $100,000, $250,000 or $500,000 in coverage. This add-on coverage pays only if you are a passenger on a regularly scheduled common carrier or chartered flight.

The plan pays according to the loss type. For example, losing one hand, foot or eye means you’ll only get 50% of the coverage. But if you lose two limbs, eyes or your life, the policy will pay the maximum sum.

Rental car damage

TravelSafe offers optional rental car damage on both plans, which will pay up to $35,000 per covered vehicle. Some examples of covered losses include vandalism, windstorms, collision or theft. The add-on coverage excludes exotic car rentals.

What TravelSafe doesn't cover

Travel insurance plans have exclusions to coverage, so it’s a good idea to check the fine print to know what your plan won’t cover. Here are some TravelSafe insurance plan exclusions:

  • Being under drug influence except when prescribed by a physician.
  • Driving or riding in races.
  • Taking part in adventure or extreme activities, including endurance, speed competitions or events.
  • Diving when not certified or in the presence of a divemaster.
  • Elective procedures or treatments.
  • Routine physical exams or dental care.
  • Mental, nervous or psychological conditions or disorders unless partially or completely hospitalized.

TravelSafe insurance review FAQs

Yes, TravelSafe travel insurance covers COVID-19 as any other type of sickness. The policy coverage, limits and exclusions may vary by your specific TravelSafe plan. Be sure to review your TravelSafe insurance policy before traveling to know how COVID-19 is covered, how to make a claim for COVID-19 and what you have to do to get your claim approved.

TravelSafe insurance does offer an optional upgrade to  “cancel for any reason” coverage if you buy the Classic plan. The TavelSafe Classic policy will reimburse up to 75% of your non-refundable trip cost if you purchase a TravelSafe plan within 21 days of your initial trip payment or deposit. This option is not available in New York. The Basic plan does not offer “cancel for any reason” coverage.

TravelSafe considers any disease, illness or condition you received or were recommended to receive examination, testing or medical treatment within 60 days of your insurance plan’s effective date as a pre-existing condition.

TravelSafe will waive the pre-existing medical condition exclusion if you purchased your policy within 21 days of making your initial trip deposit or payment and were not deemed disabled from travel when purchasing your policy.

This pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver is available in all states for the Classic plan. With the Basic plan, however, the waiver is only available for residents of Florida, Missouri, Kansas, Virginia and Washington.

Travel insurance is an important part of trip preparation but  many people are confused by the sheer number of available insurers and policies. The majority of people take personal vacations and experience few or no problems. That said,  having travel insurance ensures you have financial coverage in case you have an emergency and necessitates you getting reimbursed for expenses like medical bills, flight delays or alternative accommodations.

TravelSafe is one of the longest-running privately owned travel insurance companies in the United States. It has supplied vacation coverage since 1971. In this travel insurance review, we explore the different plans available with TravelSafe and discuss whether it’s the right travel insurer for your next trip.

Our Take on TravelSafe Travel Insurance

TravelSafe Insurance is one of the leading companies providing travel insurance in the U.S., offering two comprehensive policy plans that cover a range of scenarios. They’re a great option for travel insurance if you’re looking for a straightforward, no-nonsense provider that will ensure you’re covered in the case of everything from baggage delay to accidental death.

Although its travel insurance product selection is small, we recommend TravelSafe because it offers a sound deal on cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) coverage and trip cancellation and interruption coverage. It also has reasonable coverage for trip delays and 24/7 assistance for customers that need off-hour or holiday support.

Rating Factors

TravelSafe Coverage

TravelSafe has two travel insurance plans: Basic and Classic. The Classic plan is the more popular, and provides a lot of value for money and offers plenty of travel protection.

TravelSafe’s Basic plan includes:

  • 100% of trip cost for trip cancellation, up to $10,000
  • 100% of trip cost for trip interruption
  • $500 for a missed trip connection
  • $100 per day for trip delay, up to $1,000
  • $35,000 for accident and medical expenses
  • $100,000 for medical evacuation or repatriation of remains
  • $500 for lost baggage and personal items
  • $100 for baggage delay

Optional Riders

Travelers that buy a Basic plan have the option to purchase riders for other things, such as  CFAR, rental car damage and business and sports equipment rental. However, certain exclusions may apply, so read the fine print of your contract.

An insurance rider is a term that describes an optional add-on. This allows you to buy extra coverage for whatever travel plan you get. Riders are ways travelers can customize their insurance policy, tailoring coverage to the kind of vacation that’s planned.

Riders available to add to a Basic plan from TravelSafe include:

  • Cancel for any reason coverage
  • Air flight following accidental dismemberment or death
  • Business equipment coverage
  • Sports equipment coverage
  • Rental car damage coverage
  • Theft coverage

TravelSafe’s Classic plan gives you access to the same riders as with the Basic plan, plus:

  • Political or security emergency evacuation
  • Natural disaster emergency evacuation

Policies Offered

Here’s a summary of the travel insurance coverage included in TravelSafe’s policies.

TravelSafe Insurance

Cost of TravelSafe Travel Insurance

The cost of trip insurance is calculated based on the likelihood of something unexpected happening on a trip and the potential compensation needed to address the impact on a trip. Factors affecting these calculations include the vacation destination, particular activities, health and age of the travelers and the length of the trip.

TravelSafe doesn’t have the lowest prices in the market, but the coverage limits for its two plans are comparatively high. Some travelers will feel either policy is worth the price. We gathered quotes for seven trip types with varying trip details and traveler types for the policies TravelSafe offers.

Does TravelSafe Offer 24/7 Travel Assistance?

Both travel insurance policies from TravelSafe include 24/7 emergency assistance services. No matter where you are in the world, customers have access to a helpline serviced by a multilingual team to help navigate a variety of situations.

Having access to this helpline is useful in any number of emergency travel situations, including political or natural disaster evacuations, lost passports, flight and hotel rebooking, visa requirements and local weather updates for things like major storms. Service personnel can also help with medical emergencies, including medical transportation, medical record translations and sourcing of medical care.

While emergencies rarely happen when you take a vacation, they do occur. Knowing you have a 24-hour line to call gives you a measure of peace of mind. You can call for advice or specific help with your trip.

TravelSafe Customer Reviews

The vast majority of customer reviews for TravelSafe travel insurance are positive, with many customers saying they’re more than satisfied by TravelSafe’s customer service and with the value of their insurance policy. While some customer reviews complain about the amount of time they had to wait to hear back about a claim, most customers appear to receive compensation in the end, so there aren’t many unhappy complaints.

The following positive and negative reviews have been taken from Squaremouth .

“Spoke to claims yesterday, and they were very helpful in explaining what information to submit to file a claim [for a] delayed flight and, therefore, missed connection to our final destination.” — FG “It took a little time, but with a couple of back-and-forths for paperwork, the claim was paid in full. The rep I dealt with on the phone and via email was very professional, courteous and appeared to treat the claim with the same importance that I did.” — William “Customer service is slow to respond, and there are too many companies that I need to interact with to file a claim. The claim process is complicated and slow.” — Daniel “Never received a response once I submitted my claim. Never was able to speak to anyone using the claims phone line. Customer service was no help when I needed to file a claim.” — Robyn

If you need to file a claim with TravelSafe, call the company at 1-727-475-2808 or toll-free in the U.S. at 877-539-6729.

Is TravelSafe Worth It?

While TravelSafe travel insurance plans might not offer the most impressive selection of policies, the company is a trustworthy provider to buy travel insurance from. Their Basic plan offers comprehensive coverage for things like medical insurance and travel delays, whilet the Classic plan has competitive limits for compensation in emergencies.

We recommend TravelSafe insurance as one of the best providers for their Accidental Death and Dismemberment policy in particular, which offers a lot for medical coverage or repatriation. Overall, they’re a solid provider of basic travel insurance, which is ideal if you’re looking to cover a regular vacation without any specific additions.

Methodology: Our System for Ranking the Best Travel Insurance Companies

  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $5,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A family of four taking an $8,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A 65-year-old couple taking a $7,000 vacation to the United Kingdom.
  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $7,000 trip to the United Kingdom.

  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CAREFULLY BECAUSE IT REQUIRES YOU TO ARBITRATE CERTAIN DISPUTES AND CLAIMS AND LIMITS THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU CAN SEEK RELIEF FROM COMPANY. Excluding claims for injunctive or other equitable relief, for all other claims related to the Website, including any goods or services purchased through the Website, any dispute or controversy arising out of or relating to this Agreement, including without limitation, any and all disputes, claims (whether in tort, contract, statutory or otherwise) or disagreements concerning the existence, breach, interpretation, application or termination of this Agreement shall be resolved by final and binding arbitration pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act and in accordance with the JAMS Inc. Comprehensive Arbitration Rules & Procedures then in effect. There shall be no right or authority for any claims to be arbitrated on a class action basis. The arbitration shall take place in Fairhope, Alabama or at the option of the party seeking relief, by telephone, online, or via written submissions alone; however such election shall not prohibit Company from attending such an arbitration in person. Said arbitration shall be administered by JAMS. The arbitral tribunal (“Tribunal”) shall be composed of one arbitrator, who shall be independent and impartial. If the parties fail to agree on the arbitrator within twenty (20) calendar days after the initiation of an arbitration hereunder, JAMS shall appoint the arbitrator. The arbitration shall be conducted in the English language. The decision of the arbitrator will be final and binding on the parties, subject to all rights of appeal allowed by JAMS. Judgment on any award(s) rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. The arbitrator shall have the authority to determine arbitrability of any disputes arising out of or relating to this Agreement. Nothing in this Section shall prevent either party from seeking immediate injunctive relief from any court of competent jurisdiction, and any such request shall not be deemed incompatible with the agreement to arbitrate or a waiver of the right to arbitrate. The parties undertake to keep confidential all awards in their arbitration, together with all confidential information, all materials in the proceedings created for the purpose of the arbitration and all other documents produced by the other party in the proceedings and not otherwise in the public domain, save and to the extent that disclosure may be required of a party by legal duty, to protect or pursue a legal right or to enforce or challenge an award in legal proceedings before a court or other judicial authority. The arbitrator shall award all fees and expenses, including reasonable attorney’s fees, to the prevailing party. Any judgment rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.

You may choose to opt out of the agreement to arbitrate by mailing a written opt-out notice (“Notice”) to Company. The Notice must be postmarked no later than thirty (30) days after the date you accept these T&C for the first time. The Notice must be mailed to: Trawick International, Inc., Post Office Box 2284 Fairhope, Alabama USA 36533, to the attention of General Counsel. This procedure is the only mechanism by which you can opt out of the agreement to arbitrate. Opting out of the agreement to arbitrate has no effect on any other parts of this Agreement, or any previous or future arbitration agreements that you have entered into with Company or its affiliates.

Membership programs like Covac Global, Medjet, Global Rescue and International SOS can supplement ... [+] travel insurance by adding valuable services.

Glenn Davis says he's grateful for his medical and security membership, which he bought as an afterthought three days before his recent trip to Italy.

Davis, a partner at an executive recruiting firm in Tampa, Fla., was visiting his daughter in Rome when he stepped off a train platform and fell onto a track, shattering his leg.

Two men rescued him seconds before a train arrived. An ambulance transported him to an Italian hospital, where he says no one spoke English.

"It was so frustrating," he says.

Fortunately, Davis' Medjet membership provides medical evacuation services. He called Medjet, which quickly arranged for an air ambulance to fly him directly back to a hospital in Tampa.

"They were lifesavers," he adds.

What's next for medical and security memberships?

Membership programs like Covac Global , Medjet , Global Rescue and International SOS can supplement travel insurance by adding valuable services such as an emergency response hotline, translation and evacuation to your home hospital. (Travel insurance often will only transport you to the nearest hospital when you have an accident.) But in post-pandemic travel, medical and security memberships are adapting to meet new challenges, say observers — and in the near future, they'll be able to do more than get you to the nearest hospital.

Ross Caldwell Thompson, CEO of Covac Global, says medical and security memberships are on the verge of a tectonic shift. The legacy medical and security membership companies are busy upgrading their products with improved technology and integrations to add value in a new age of travel. However, our core mission of bringing our members home without complex requirements is paramount.

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid travel insurance plans.

"The industry needs to look at its core offerings — the things that will bring their members home proactively," he says.

What kind of train is coming for subscribers, and indeed, for the industry itself? The last few months offer some clues.

Covac Global adds search and rescue coverage

In January, Covac launched a priority location and extraction benefit that for all of its members, which is unique in the industry, because it does not require Covac to know the member's whereabouts. "It could be a teen that doesn’t return from a nightclub in Spain or an executive that never came back from that business dinner in Mexico City," says Thompson. "Our location based global response resources have the capacity to initiate and investigative a search before any required policy wait times many police, rescue, and park rangers are bound."

Global Rescue's new GRID 2.0

One of the newest developments in medical and security membership is Global Rescue's GRID 2.0 system, introduced last month. The new system pushes event notifications and alerts to customers. They include alerts for civil unrest, disease-related developments, safety issues, transportation disruptions, communications blackouts, and natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic activity.  In an emergency, the GRID 2.0 app connects travelers with the medical teams and military special operations veterans who staff Global Rescue's global operations centers.

Paul Mullen, vice president of enterprise sales at Global Rescue, says business leaders, security chiefs and human resource officials asked for a more robust notification system after the pandemic.

"They have been on the lookout for something like this," he says.

GRID 2.0 is meant to be used by companies to track their travelers. They can superimpose a traveler's location on a map and note any potential threats. The information is also available to travelers so they can steer clear of trouble. In a world of increasing uncertainty, it's an invaluable tool, says Mullen.

International SOS adds new Chinese language services

International SOS, which provides corporate medical, health, and security risk management services, in late 2023 added new Chinese language services in response to rapidly growing overseas market demands of Chinese enterprises. International SOS' team of medical, health, and safety consultants now has 24/7 global coverage with native Chinese language assistance support."There has been a significant increase in demand from Chinese clients in overseas markets," notes Nicolas Sommer, managing director of International SOS China.

Global Guardian integrates with Concur

Global Guardian , which provides international duty of care to corporations, organizations and high net worth individuals, recently teamed up with Concur Travel . The company is offering Concur, a travel expense and travel management software, as a way to fulfill their duty of care needs through a suite of travel, medical, and security-related services.

“International travel is becoming more challenging than ever for businesses and their employees," says Dale Buckner, CEO of Global Guardian. He says integrating with Concur Travel will improve traveler experiences and help them access real-time support.

Also new: Leisure travelers are getting on the medical and security memberships train

Perhaps one of the biggest changes in medical and security memberships is who is buying them. Once the domain of corporate executives and ultrahigh net worth individuals, these memberships are also appealing to international leisure travelers and families.

"They're discovering that not only is the cost affordable," says Carrie Pasquarello, CEO of Global Secure Resources . "But integrating reliable support services also helps alleviate the stress of navigating unpredictable geopolitical and environmental challenges."

Exact numbers are difficult to come by in this industry, since most of the major companies are privately held. But in interviews, key insiders confirm that much of the new growth is coming from leisure travelers who see the benefits of these medical and security memberships. And more growth may lie ahead.

"Always looking to evolve"

So what's next?

"We are always looking to evolve our services to reflect what our travelers are most concerned about," says Mike Hallman, Medjet's CEO.

How does a medical and security membership evolve? During the pandemic, Medjet added transport for COVID-positive patients. It was not easy, according to Hallman. The biggest challenge was finding a way for its aircraft affiliates to equip aircraft and train flight staff on proper protocols.

Hallman dropped a clue about how a company like Medjet might evolve. In its latest customer service survey, it found that the overwhelming majority (99.7%) of travelers are concerned about safety — and 57% of them are more concerned about safety than ever before. When asked which events cause the most concern during travel, 27.9% said political unrest, 27.7% said terrorism, and 13% cited crime.

Hallman says those concerns have led to an increase in sales of MedjetHorizon, a product that also includes security evacuation and crisis response to a wide range of threats, including riots, violent crime, acts of terrorism, kidnapping, and disappearance.

But there might be even more these companies can do to address traveler fears.

What will happen?

Like travel insurance, medical and security memberships are slow to change. Their core products, like emergency medical evacuation and security services, have been staples in the corporate travel world and are making inroads in leisure travel. But technology is advancing rapidly and we may be at a tipping point where a new product or service could change everything.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

United’s Planes : An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among several incidents that have occurred over two weeks  on Boeing flights operated by United Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .

Is It Safe in Moscow?

safe travel company

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Nizhny Novgorod
  • Novosibirsk
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

How safe is Moscow for tourists?

safe travel company

Moscow is an enormous city. 12 million people live here and many others commute in from the Moscow Region for work each day. And although there is no particular danger for either tourists or locals, it is, as in any big city, always worth using common sense. We'll tell you how to avoid running into trouble and which areas you might want to avoid.

Is the city center safe?

safe travel company

“I was shocked to see people using their laptops in parks in the evening,” says Nicholas Font from Argentina, who visited Moscow in May. “Of course, I was careful with my belongings, but I wasn't afraid of wearing my bag in the city center.”

The city center (and it is a very big city center) is generally convenient and safe for walking around. Pedestrians enjoy wide sidewalks and relatively calm road traffic. There are tourist police (who speak English), not to mention the ordinary police. Of course, there is never any guarantee that you won’t encounter a thief, and so to stay on the safe side keep your documents and money in places that are inaccessible to others. Red Square, Nikolskaya Street and Arbat are the most touristy places, so it’s worth being a little more aware of pickpockets in these areas.

Remember that in Moscow the police can stop you to check your ID. But unless you have committed some kind of crime there is generally nothing to worry about: You just need to show your passport and visa. "I was asked to show my passport and visa three times. Once in St. Petersburg and twice in Moscow," says our reader Ghazali Khan from Dubai. "Police in Russia are polite and professional. Most of them don’t speak English, but they understand your gestures."

Can you walk around at night?

safe travel company

Have you heard the expression "Moscow never sleeps?" Well, this is very true. The city center is buzzing 24 hours a day, and even on the outskirts you are likely to see people out and about even late at night. On a Friday or Saturday night there are likely to be even more people out on the streets than in the daytime. Of course, when it is minus 20 degrees Celsius in the winter, it isn’t as much fun as in the summer, but the only time Moscow really feels deserted is on the morning of Jan. 1 .

According to a recent poll conducted by The Economist , Moscow came in at 37 out of 60 big cities around the world in its Safe City Index. (Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka were at the top of the list). In other words, the Russian capital is pretty much average when it comes to safety.

Is it safe to go to the suburbs?

safe travel company

As a general rule, the police record more crimes in the city center than elsewhere. For instance, 2,846 crimes—mainly robberies and muggings—were recorded in 2018 in the Presnensky District between Arbat and Moscow City.

At the same time, over the past year these numbers have gone down by 20 percent, according to the prosecutor's office.

The city suburbs, with the exceptions of the Maryino and Perovo districts, are generally regarded as quite safe. So if you have a desire to see how ordinary Muscovites live, don't hesitate to hop on the metro and ride out to Vladykino, for example. Just work out your route in advance as you might not run into many people who speak English out there.

What about public transport and taxis?

safe travel company

When Russia hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2018, there were many stories of unscrupulous taxi drivers charging tourists astronomical amounts, sometimes as high as a thousand dollars, for a trip from the airport to the center. In order to avoid such unpleasant surprises, avoid airport taxis altogether and instead download Uber or Yandex Taxi on your phone and then pay by card rather than with cash. You will see the cost of the journey at the time of booking, and this won't change when you arrive at your destination. And if you have a strong desire to leave a tip, you can do so online. For your information, the cost of a journey from the airport to the city shouldn’t cost more than $30 (unless you order a luxury car, of course). While you can also find official taxis at the airport, these will be significantly more expensive than ordering one off Yandex Taxi or Uber.

Travelling around the city by metro, bus or trolleybus is generally quite convenient. The Moscow metro is one of the most reliable and safe (not to mention beautiful) underground transport systems in the world. The trains are new and run at short intervals. CCTVs are everywhere in the metro, and there are police at every station. Gabriel Infante Carrillo from Mexico City says that while riding the Moscow metro he had to put his backpack through an X-ray machine, but that the official was very polite with him. "I was not surprised at all, I knew beforehand that this could happen due to security reasons," he said.

Aboveground transport by and large uses specially allocated lanes, and while waiting you can pass the time at "smart" bus stops that have Wi-Fi, electric sockets and an electronic bus schedule in Latin script.

Can young women travel alone in Moscow?

safe travel company

It is generally rare for anyone in Moscow to pester women in the street or catcall them, especially if they see that she is a foreign tourist. Russian men are usually restrained and, even if they like a girl VERY MUCH, it is usually sufficient to politely decline their advances. So Moscow is a perfectly safe city solo women.

An advert by Mango has been deemed "irresponsible" by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for featuring a model who appeared to be "unhealthily thin".

The listing on the fashion retailer's app was for a short-sleeve jumper, and featured a woman wearing it with her arms by her sides.

The ASA received a complaint about the ad and contacted Mango, but said the company failed to respond.

It said it considered that the model's "upper body and hips appeared to be very narrow and there were gaps between her arms and body, accentuating her slender frame".

"Because the model appeared to be unhealthily thin, we concluded that the ad was irresponsible."

Mango has been told to remove the ad in its "current form".

The average annual council tax bill will rise by £106 this year, new figures show.

It comes as local authorities try to maximise revenue to pay for struggling frontline services.

The bill for an average Band D property will increase by 5% to £2,171, according to statistics released by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Some financial advice firms are putting their  customers' retirements "at risk" , the City watchdog has warned.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has asked chief executives to review and improve retirement income advice services following a scathing review into the sector.

It found a number of firms were providing incorrect information to customers, and in a "small number of instances" it had resulted in customers incurring unnecessary charges.

Sarah Pritchard, the FCA's executive director of markets and international, said some organisations were "not even getting the basics right and putting their customers' futures at risk".

"We urge all firms to take on board our findings and review their own processes. Where they do not, we will act," she added.

Single parents have the lowest average income for both men and women - with mothers particularly affected, a new study suggests.

Figures from NOW: Pensions and the Pensions Policy Institute, released on National Single Parent Day, show single fathers earn 32% less than the "average" man, while mothers earn 37% less than an average woman.

When comparing a single mother to the average man, the gap is 53%. Single mums also have the lowest labour market participation of all groups, according to the research.

In the UK, women retire with an average of just £69,000 in their pension pot - two-thirds less than men - with differences in working patterns one of the drivers.

Figures show women spend a decade away from work on average while raising families or taking on other care needs, with the career gap amounting to roughly £39,000 in lost pension savings.

For some reason no-one can quite remember, when economists talk about interest rates they invariably find themselves referring to species of birds.

They call those who are broadly in favour of lower interest rates "doves". Those who are keen on higher borrowing costs are "hawks".

Analysts in the City of London draw up diagrams of the nine members of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, denoting how many of which bird there are at each meeting.

Those who invariably lean towards higher rates are perma-hawks or Uber-hawks and those on the other side are perma-doves; an announcement which surprises in one direction is "dovish" or "hawkish" and so on and so forth.

At the last meeting there were two hawks on the committee (Catherine Mann and Jonathan Haskel, who both voted for an increase in rates), and one dove (Swati Dhingra, who voted for a cut). Two hawks versus one dove. The rest of the committee voted to leave rates on hold and that was that.

This time around, the hawks fled the tower (if that is the appropriate terminology), with both Mann and Haskel voting not to increase rates but to leave them on hold. That leaves one dove.

In other words, in the Kremlinology of interest rates, all of a sudden an interest rate cut is looking that bit closer.

Right now, markets reckon it could come as soon as June, and some economists think there's an outside chance of it arriving in May.

It's just a question of how quickly the neutrals turn dovish. And all of this silliness about birds belies a more straightforward, less avian, story.

Inflation - the main thing the Bank is targeting - is dropping. This doesn't mean, as you'll already know, that prices themselves are falling; they remain stubbornly higher than they were a few years ago.

However, they are at least rising less quickly, and that is what the Bank cares about.

Come April, inflation could even be down to the Bank's 2% target. Other central banks around the world are also poised (the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank) to cut rates and some (the Swiss National Bank) have already done so. And like many birds, the Bank of England tends to move with the rest of the monetary flock.

All of which is to say, it might have looked as if nothing happened today. And in one sense that's true. Like a swan gliding across the water, the Bank seems on the surface to be doing very little.

But beneath the surface the legs are kicking, manoeuvring and preparing the ground for lower interest rates. And that's quite enough bird analogies for one day.

The US Justice Department has launched a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of maintaining an illegal monopoly on smartphones.

The 88-page lawsuit alleges California-based Apple focuses on what Attorney General Merrick Garland described as "exclusionary, anticompetitive conduct that hurts both consumers and developers".

Mr Garland said Apple has limited what developers can offer iPhone users by imposing restrictions and fees, and has degraded the functionality of non-Apple apps and accessories for iPhone users.

The Bank of England is "on the way" to cutting interest rates, Andrew Bailey has said.

Speaking after today's rate decision, the Bank's governor said he was "very hopeful" and "encouraged" by good signs in the economy.

He also said the technical recession seen at the end of 2023 appears to be "subsiding".

However, he said consistent progress towards hitting the 2% inflation target needed to be seen before rates were cut.

"We do need to see further progress, but do want to give this message very strongly [that] we have had very encouraging and good news, so I think, you know, we can say - we are on the way," he said.

Responding to questions from broadcasters about whether markets were right to price in two or three rate cuts this year, Mr Bailey said it was "reasonable".

"That is not a prediction from me as to what's going to happen, either on timing or amount, but I am encouraged," he said.

The Bank of England's interest rate decision has been branded "disappointing", "out of touch" and the "coward's way out" by mortgage experts.

When the rate changes, people on tracker and standard variable rate deals usually see an immediate change in their monthly payments, while those looking to remortgage or get on the housing ladder will see deals go up or down.

Newspage, an industry news service, sent a selection of comments from mortgage experts to the Money team.

"The Bank of England seems totally out of touch with what the public are going through," Ben Perks, managing director at Orchard Financial Advisers, said.

"Today was an opportunity to take the pressure off borrowers, and it's so disappointing that they haven't had the bottle to do it and the cost of borrowing will remain at the highest level for 16 years."

Gary Bush, financial adviser at Mortgage Shop, said the decision was the "coward's way out" and called the group a "committee of ostriches".

"Sadly, like the government, the BoE couldn't care less about the people at the bottom of the food chain, it seems," he added.

Our   business presenter Ian King has been taking a look at the minutes from the Bank of England's interest rate meeting, and says it is clear members are still "very concerned" about tightness in the labour market.

"They note that wage inflation is growing more rapidly still in the UK than it is in peer economies, particularly the United States," he says.

"There are references to persistent inflationary pressures and they make it very clear that they will not be voting to lower interest rates until these pressures start to ease away."

He adds that the Bank is expecting consumption growth to return in the first half of the year, and for GDP to grow by around 0.25%.

"They have picked up on the indications that consumer spending is starting to recover... it also notes that mortgage approvals in January were at their highest level since October 2022," King says.

The Bank of England has "tightened the screws too much" and should be cutting interest rates, a respected economist has said.

After the Bank held its interest rate at a 16-year high of 5.25% - which is where it has been since August - Carsten Jung, senior economist at the Institute For Public Policy Research (IPPR), said inflation was coming down "more quickly than many predicted just a few months ago" and so were domestic price pressures.

"All this shows the Bank of England tightened the screws too much, which is squeezing much-needed future growth," he said.

"The Bank should thus cut rates more quickly than its current plans. The tightening stance by both the chancellor and the Bank of England contribute to the UK's growth falling far behind the US's fast recovery."

Away from the interest rate decision for a moment...

We have just heard from the Department for Work and Pensions after a report recommended women born in the 1950s and affected by a change to the state pension age are owed compensation.

A spokesperson has said the department will "consider" the report's findings and "respond in due course".

"The government has always been committed to supporting all pensioners in a sustainable way that gives them a dignified retirement whilst also being fair to them and taxpayers," they added.

"The state pension is the foundation of income in retirement and will remain so as we deliver a further 8.5% rise in April which will increase the state pension for 12 million pensioners by £900."

Number 10 has refused to say whether it will pay up to compensate those backed by Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) who were hit when the state pension age for women was raised to 65 in 2018 to match men.

The prime minister's spokesperson would only say it would "look at" the report's findings.

Markets are still focused on June as the date for a first interest rate cut.

Nothing has changed on that front after the Bank of England's decision to hold at 5.25%, though the pound has fallen slightly, three tenths of a cent against the dollar. It still stands at $1.27, however.

The FTSE 100 is up 1.5% - though it was already up 1% before the decision.
