Launched in April 2022, Celebrity Beyond is the third ship in the cruise line's Edge Series, capable of holding up to 3,260 passengers and 1,400 crew members. On board, guests have their pick of 32 food and beverage venues serving everything from Greek to French to Italian cuisine; there are also several cocktail bars and lounges where guests can grab a drink.

One of the highlights of Celebrity Beyond is its 4,500-piece art collection, which includes works by travel photographers and international artists. There is also no shortage of unique entertainment options; these range from acrobatic shows to juggling mixologist performances. To enjoy stunning water views, enjoy Celebrity's "Magic Carpet," a large platform that hangs off the edge of the ship and moves from deck to deck.

Staterooms offer amenities like plush bathrobes, comfortable Cashmere mattresses and flat-screen TVs; many also come with private verandas. For a one-of-a-kind experience, splurge on a room in The Retreat. This resort-within-a-resort features villas and suites with added luxuries like plunge pools, hot tubs and butlers. Plus, guests of The Retreat have exclusive access to a private sundeck, restaurant and lounge, along with an onboard credit that can be used however you see fit.

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated. 

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops. 

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman . 

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Disney Magic

The 2,713-passenger Disney Magic is the oldest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet (it first launched in 1998). It was last refurbished in May 2023, when it received updates like a "Soul"-themed lounge, concierge-level upgrades and a new "Encanto" live show. The ship also features family favorites such as the AquaDuck waterslide, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique dress-up shop and Edge, an interactive game center for tweens.

Disney Magic features diverse entertainment, including live shows, an open-air Wide World of Sports deck, three pools and a splash area for children younger than 3. Unique to the Magic is the teens-only Chill Spa. When it comes to dining, the ship offers eight eateries, including an adults-only specialty restaurant and buffet options. Recent cruisers gave the food quality mixed reviews.

In terms of lodging, 70% of cabins offer ocean views or verandas. All cabins are outfitted with flat-screen TVs, sitting areas and bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Suites include extra perks such as concierge service and media libraries. Past cruisers noted that the service on this ship is up to Disney's standards, but so is the price tag.

Disney Magic sails from Galveston, Texas ;  San Diego ;  Miami ; Fort Lauderdale, Florida ;  New Orleans ; and  San Juan, Puerto Rico . It visits destinations across the Bahamas , the Caribbean, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

Following a delicious meal, travelers will have access to a wealth of amenities, including the spa, a pool, several whirlpools, lounges and a fitness center. When evening rolls around, cruisers can press their luck at the casino or catch a live show.

As with other Silversea ships, Silver Moon boasts all-suite accommodations, ranging in size from 334 to 1,970 square feet. Each suite boasts butler service, marble bathrooms, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, minibars and large windows. Plus, you'll get a welcome bottle of Champagne. Upgraded staterooms may include multiple bedrooms, sitting areas and bathrooms; espresso machines; daily canapes and private balconies.

Silver Moon is set to explore a variety of regions, including Europe, Africa, Central America and Asia. The ship also completes transoceanic voyages.

Symphony of the Seas

The 6,680-passenger, 2,200-crew-member Symphony of the Seas set sail in 2018 and features 18 decks packed with activities.

For heart-pounding fun, travelers will find a surf simulator, an indoor ice skating rink, two 40-foot rock walls, a zip line and a 10-story slide. Meanwhile, relaxation seekers can unwind in the spa, sip cocktails made by robotic bartenders or stroll through the Central Park -inspired neighborhood.

Onboard snacks and meals are served at 20 quick-service and sit-down eateries. The Main Dining Room is where the ship's traditional, complimentary dinners are provided nightly, but specialty options like a steakhouse, a bistro and a Johnny Rockets outpost are also available. What's more, cruisers can dine at Jamie's Italian, a restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

After filling up on gourmet fare, passengers can retreat to their cabins, all of which include work desks, flat-screen TVs and minibars. Guests can choose from 149-square-foot Interior Staterooms, some of which have virtual balconies with real-time views of the ocean, or opt for upgraded cabins with furnished balconies and up to 1,524 square feet of space. Select suites also feature two bedrooms, whirlpool tubs and dining rooms.

Symphony of the Seas departs from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, Miami , Fort Lauderdale, Rome and Barcelona for sailings throughout the Caribbean and Europe.

Odyssey of the Seas

Launched in July 2021, the Odyssey of the Seas holds 5,498 passengers and 1,550 crew members. Royal Caribbean's latest ship is the first Quantum Ultra Class vessel to sail in the United States. As a member of this class, Odyssey of the Seas offers standout amenities like RipCord by iFLY, billed as the only skydiving simulator available at sea, and the FlowRider, a 40-foot-long surf simulator. There is also the North Star observation capsule, which hoists guests 300 feet above sea level over the cruise ship to enjoy unparalleled views below. 

In addition to these thrilling activities, the ship comes equipped with standard facilities like pools, an arcade, a spa, a fitness center with classes, kids clubs and shopping venues. There are also 15 dining options, ranging from Japanese fare to all-you-can-eat buffets to Starbucks. For drinks, the ship offers nine bars and lounges, giving passengers plenty of places to enjoy libations. Entertainment options include theatrical performances, live music, a casino, outdoor movie nights and more. 

As far as cabins go, cruisers can choose between Interior, Ocean View, and Balcony staterooms, as well as suite accommodations and new Virtual Balcony rooms. These technologically advanced cabins feature floor-to-ceiling displays that project real-time views of the sights and sounds from the outside of the ship. 

Odyssey of the Seas sails to ports in Europe, as well as to various destinations in the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Cape Liberty, New Jersey.

Disney Dream

Last renovated in 2015 (after being introduced in 2011), the 4,000-passenger Disney Dream is one of Disney's largest ships. Highlights include the 765-foot AquaDuck water coaster, a virtual sports simulator (for an extra fee) and theatrical performances that bring Disney animated favorites – like "Beauty and the Beast" – to life.

While the ship emphasizes family-focused entertainment with five specialized kids clubs, parents can enjoy the adults-only Quiet Cove pool and the Senses Spa & Salon. At night, a section of the ship called The District transforms into an adult oasis with host of bars and lounges. In terms of dining, the ship offers nine themed venues including two specialty adults-only restaurants.

Staterooms also cater to cruising clans, offering perks like sofa beds. Over 85 percent of cabins have ocean views or verandas. Those looking for extra space can opt for Concierge Suites, which range from 622 to 1,781 square feet.

While some recent cruisers commented that the ship is more expensive than other mainstream competitors, most said it was well worth the price due to the personalized attention they received from the staff.

Disney Dream departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida ;  New York ; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Southampton, England; and more for sailings in the Bahamas , Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe. The cruise line also offers some transatlantic voyages.

Port Everglades, in Florida's Fort Lauderdale, is one of the country's major gateways to cruise vacations -- only Port of Miami and Port Canaveral are busier. Some 3.86 million cruisers passed through Port Everglades in 2018. The port is conveniently located near both Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International (MIA) , making it easy to fly in, stay a night or two in any of the many points hotels in the area and then board a cruise ship to the Bahamas, Caribbean and beyond.

Who sails from Port Everglades?

Port Everglades is a home port for ships from many of the industry's major cruise lines. In 2021, lines with a presence at the port will include Carnival Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises , Cunard , Holland America Line , Princess Cruises , The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , Royal Caribbean and Silversea Cruises . (Note that the coronavirus pandemic continues to shake up the industry with cruise cancellations , and home ports, ships and itineraries may shift as sailings resume.)

What kind of itineraries will you find from Port Everglades? Look for three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and plenty of Caribbean sailings ranging from five to 21 nights on some of the world's hottest ships such as Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex; Holland America's Nieuw Statendam; Sky Princess ; Carnival Sunrise ; Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas; and Silversea's Silver Moon. There's also a wide range of sailings to Mexico and the Panama Canal from the port.

In addition to the cruise lines that make Port Everglades home, the fast ferry Balearia Caribbean transports passengers from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island.

Note that Port Everglades does not offer wheelchair service. If you need a wheelchair from the curb to ship, or parking lot to ship, contact your cruise line to make arrangements.

Disembarking from Port Everglades is also a breeze since it participates in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Global Entry program . Be sure to pack your Global Entry card and you'll zip through the immigration process so you can quickly make your way to the airport or your hotel.

Nearest airports

Port Everglades, the only U.S. cruise port adjacent to an international airport, is easily accessible and just 10 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest, Spirit and United all fly here from gateways across the U.S.

Farther away but still accessible are Miami International, just under 30 miles south, and Palm Beach International (PBI), which is 50 miles north. If you're traveling to Miami, look for flights on American, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country and United. From Palm Beach, fly Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southern Airways Express, Southwest, Spirit and United.

No matter which airport you pick, you can leverage airline programs to save money on airfare. Headed to MIA? Two airlines -- Alaska and Delta -- offer companion certificates as perks of their cobranded credit cards. Get the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card and receive a companion certificate on the card's anniversary. The certificate allows a companion to fly with you for $121 ($99 fare and the cost of taxes from $22). And, several Delta credit cards offer a similar companion certificate . Finally, you can bring a companion along for free (actually, just the cost of the ticket's taxes) if you have the Southwest Companion Pass .

If you're flying to MIA or PBI instead and are a member of Frontier's Discount Den , look for Friends Fly Free and Kids Fly Free offers, which the airline sells periodically. You can also check American's Reduced Mileage Awards to see if FLL, MIA or PBI are on the current list, and watch for JetBlue flash sales.

As your packing for your trip, don't forget to bring any credit cards that confer lounge benefits. For example, while FLL doesn't have a Priority Pass lounge, it does offer a credit at Kafe Kalik in Terminal 4. Your Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card come with a Priority Pass membership (enrollment required) — as do many other credit cards .

How to get to the port

Cruise line transfers.

Many times, it makes sense to buy the cruise line's bus transfer from the airport to port and vice versa. Flying into FLL isn't one of those times. The airport is so close to Port Everglades -- a 10-minute drive -- that it makes sense to simply grab a taxi or Uber. It will cost less, and you won't need to wait around as the cruise line fills the bus with passengers.

If you're flying into MIA, however, which is about an hour's drive to Port Everglades, you should price out the cruise line's transfer option and see what's a better deal.

Hotel shuttles

If you plan to spend the night in Fort Lauderdale before your cruise, look for a hotel that offers a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel as well as a free or paid shuttle from the hotel to the cruise port the next morning. These three points properties fit that bill:

• Hampton Inn & Suites Fort Lauderdale Airport/South Cruise Port has a free airport shuttle and paid shuttle to the cruise terminal. Rooms range from 26,000 to 50,000 Hilton Honors points per night.
• SpringHill Suites Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port has a free airport shuttle and a $10 one-way shuttle to the cruise terminal. Rates start at 25,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night on standard dates.
• Ramada Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise Port has a free shuttle service from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to Port Everglades. Rooms start from 15,000 Wyndham Rewards points per night.

Independent van and car services

There are several van services from FLL, too. GO Airport Shuttle costs $11 per person to Port Everglades, and vans hold a maximum of 10 people. Alternatively, you can book a luxury sedan seating up to four through GO Airport Shuttle for $40 per person.

Metro Shuttle Service costs $8 to $15 per person for the ride from FLL to Port Everglades, depending on the number of people in your group. The more people on your reservation, the lower your per person rate.

Taxi and ride-hailing services

The average one-way metered taxi fare from FLL to Port Everglades is between $15 and $17. The fee jumps to $75 if you're taking a taxi from MIA and it's $130 to $160 for a taxi ride from PBI, which is about an hour from the port. Most cabs accept credit cards, but always ask before getting in.

Uber and Lyft also serve FLL, MIA and PBI. The average rate from FLL to Port Everglades is between $10 and $15.

Public transportation

While there are public buses in Fort Lauderdale, there's no easy or convenient way to transit from the airport to the port.

Port parking

Port Everglades offers secure, well-lit parking in two garages and three gated surface lots with patrols. You can park your car within walking distance of nearly all the terminals. Cruise terminals 2 and 4 share the 2,500-space Northport Garage, though a new 1,888-space parking garage is under construction to serve both terminals. Terminals 18 and 19 each have their own surface lots named after them; the Terminal 19 Parking Lot is shared between the two. Four terminals -- cruise terminals 19, 21, 25 and 29 -- share the 2,000-space Midport Garage, but only cruise terminal 29 has a complimentary shuttle service between the parking spots and terminal.

There's a $15 daily maximum charge for standard vehicles, while oversized vehicles that exceed the width and/or height of a parking space (think: RVs) have a $19 daily maximum fee.

Port Everglades also provides parking for people with disabilities with unimpeded access to crosswalks and elevators. Parking is free for anyone who:

• has a Florida Toll Exemption Permit
• drives a vehicle modified with specialized equipment, such as ramps, lifts or foot/hand controls
• displays the Florida "DV" license plate -- Disabled Veteran -- or an equivalent license plate from another state

Where to stay near the port

Fort Lauderdale is a major vacation destination in its own right, so there are plenty of hotels from which to choose. There are a lot of points hotels -- close to the port, near the beaches and at the airport -- as well as other boutique-style and luxury resorts. Here are some of our favorite places to stay before after a cruise.

Hotels closest to the port

Several good points properties are less than a 10-minute drive from Port Everglades. They include:

Crowne Plaza Fort Lauderdale (455 FL-84): Book a room from 20,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night (1.9 miles from the port).

Holiday Inn Express Fort Lauderdale Cruise-Airport (1500 SE 17th Street Causeway): Rooms are available from 15,000 IHG points per night (1.9 miles from the port).

Hyatt Place Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port (1851 SE 10th Avenue): This is one of the most popular pre-cruise hotels with travelers who often book cruise itineraries embarking from Port Everglades. Rooms are available from 12,000 World of Hyatt points per night. Don't forget, you can also transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your Hyatt account on a 1:1 basis. (2.3 miles from the port).

Stay on the cheap

These hotels are also less than 10 minutes from the port but are a great value -- on both points and in cash -- most nights of the year. Be sure to price out both the cash and points price to find the best value. During certain times of the year, the cash prices are so low, it simply doesn't make sense to spend your hard-earned points.

Four Points by Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise Port (1800 South Federal Highway): Get a room from 35,000 points per night on standard dates or use a 35,000-point award night certificate like the one you'll get on the anniversary of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card. Just note that, depending on the season, cash prices may be a better value. (2.4 miles from the port)

Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Lauderdale 17th Street (1100 SE 17th Street): Spend between 33,000 and 60,000 Hilton Honors points per night (2.5 miles from the port).

Ramada by Wyndham Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise Port (2275 W SR 84, Marina Mile Boulevard): Rooms from 15,000 Wyndham Rewards points per night (4.1 miles from the port).

Full-service hotels

Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina (1881 SE 17th Street): Stay here for between 27,000 and 60,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port (1617 SE 17th Street): This Category 5 Marriott property that costs 35,000 points per night on standard dates (or use a 35,000-point award night certificate).

Luxury hotels

If you'd prefer staying at a luxury property, look to the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach (available from 66,000 to 95,0000 Hilton Honors points per night); The Pillars Hotel , which you can book with your Chase Ultimate Rewards points; or The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale (a Marriott Category 7 property available from 50,000 points per night on off-peak dates or using a 50,000-point award night certificate).

Where to shop near the port

Within Port Everglades, you'll find Seafarers' House. Its mission is simple: to be a "welcoming place where mariners can connect with their communities and families, seek guidance and get emergency help if needed."

While the 4,200-square-foot facility is designed to provide services to crewmembers, cruisers are also welcome. You can shop at the on-site convenience shop, access free Wi-Fi and visit the chapel.

If Seafarers' House doesn't have what you need before embarkation, there's a CVS at 1700 Federal Highway, about a 10-minute drive from port and close to the hotels we mentioned above. There's also a Publix grocery store (1940 Cordova Road) and Total Wine (1906 Cordova Road) in that area in the Harbor Shops plaza.

Where to eat

Fort Lauderdale is a cosmopolitan city with all types of restaurants, from casual diners to fine dining. You can find everything from Southern comfort food and local seafood dishes to Caribbean and Latin American cuisines, Asian fusion and more.

If you arrive at FLL early in the morning and need breakfast before heading to the port, try The Floridian Diner (1410 East Las Olas Boulevard). Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you can order your favorite egg dishes, pancakes, waffles, breakfast wraps and more. At dinnertime, they serve pork chops, country-fried steak, St. Louis ribs and fried chicken, among other hearty plates.

Lester's Diner (250 FL-84), just 10 mins from Port Everglades, is another favorite spot for all-day and all-night dining. It's been in business for more than 40 years and is a terrific place for a quintessential diner breakfast. Try the breakfast skillets, Belgian waffles and omelets. At lunch and dinner, order Greek and Italian specialties as well as burgers, deli-style sandwiches and roast chicken.

Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant (128 S Federal Hwy, Dania Beach) makes its frozen dairy treats on-site every day from fresh ingredients. Pick your favorite flavor and then take a look at the largest collection of rural American memorabilia in the country. This local legend is about 15 minutes from the port.

Tom Jenkins' Bar-B-Q (1236 S. Federal Highway, about 10 minutes from port) is a Southern-style restaurant known for its ribs and barbecue sauce. If you don't have time to taste its classic soul food dishes, you can still take home a bottle of its famous barbecue sauce.

Seafood restaurants abound, leading among them is 15th Street Fisheries at the Lauderdale Marina (1900 SE 15th Street), with amazing waterfront views. Other popular spots include the Rustic Inn Crabhouse (4331 Anglers Avenue) and Islamorada Fish Company (220 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach). All of these restaurants are within a 20-minute drive from the port.

For brew fans, the Ale Trail awaits. Greater Fort Lauderdale's thriving beer culture encompasses many nano- and micro-breweries that offer over 500 beers. How about a Hefeweizen made with Florida-grown mangos? New to the Ale Trail are 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach as well as American Icon Brewery Kitchen and Taproom, Sistrunk Marketplace and Brewery and Dangerous Minds Brewing Company, all in Fort Lauderdale.

TPG also reached out to a local and cruise industry insider -- Mark Conroy, managing director of the Americas for Silversea Cruises and a Broward County resident -- to get his take on the best places to eat in Fort Lauderdale. He singled out Rainbow Palace (2787 E Oakland Park Boulevard) for "the best Chinese meal in South Florida." He said it's "not inexpensive" but serves "great food," adding, "It tastes like you are in Hong Kong, not Fort Lauderdale."

He also suggests Fort Lauderdale's Greek Islands Taverna (3300 N Ocean Boulevard) with "amazing flavors" and "reasonable prices." No reservations are taken, though, so visitors might have to go early and wait in line. "It's definitely worth the wait," Conroy promised.

Conroy also is a fan of Coconuts (429 Seabreeze Boulevard), on Route A1A adjacent to the Swimming Hall of Fame on Fort Lauderdale Beach. "It's a typical beachy seafood hang-out," he said, "with beautiful views of the Intracoastal Waterway with a casual, relaxed vibe."

Sights to see

There are plenty of things to see and do when in Fort Lauderdale. Here are a few of our favorite recommendations for cruise passengers passing through town.

Las Olas Boulevard

We love shopping along this 2.5-mile avenue that stretches from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the ocean. It's the city's premier shopping venue and the ideal place to stroll and people-watch. Just a few miles from Port Everglades, the promenade along New River features high-fashion boutiques, sidewalk cafes and bars, along with multiple art and entertainment venues and nearby attractions. If you're looking for somewhere to eat, you'll find a plethora of options here, including Greek, Peruvian, French, Italian, Mexican, Asian, Kosher and more.

The Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi, with multiple stops and commentary, provides easy access to the promenade. Other stops include the Hilton Marina and Convention Center, Beach Place and Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Water Taxi tickets cost $28 for adults, $23 for seniors 65 and older and military personnel, and $14 for kids ages 5 to 11.

Sawgrass Mills

In Sunrise (12801 W. Sunrise Boulevard), this mall offers 350 name-brand outlets and value shops -- everything from Nike to Kate Spade to Gucci, Lululemon, Tory Burch and Tommy Hilfiger. There's also a movie and IMAX theater as well as a variety of restaurants. Paul Maison de Qualite and SushiGami are two of our favorites. The mall is a 25- to 35-minute drive from Port Everglades.

Dania Beach Ocean Park and Pier

Locals adore Dania Beach, a 20-minute drive from FLL or Port Everglades, because it's one of the least-crowded stretches of sand in the area. Yet, it even has a marina and pier from which you can fish. If you just want to enjoy the views, grab a bite to eat at Quarterdeck Restaurant (300 N. Beach Road, Dania Beach), which is right on the pier itself. At the beach, there's a playground, restrooms with showers and lifeguards on duty. You can also rent kayaks from area vendors.

Jungle Queen riverboat tours

A visit to the "Venice of America" won't be complete without taking a trip down its beautiful waterways lined with landmark homes. A local institution since 1938, Jungle Queen Riverboats (Bahia Mar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Boulevard) takes you on a 90-minute guided sightseeing tour up and down Fort Lauderdale's Intracoastal Waterway. The ship also offers a tour with dinner and show on a private island. (Tour tickets are about $24 for adults, $21 for seniors, $14 for children and free for infants.)

Museums and gardens

Historic home fans might tour Bonnet House Museum & Gardens (900 N. Birch Road; $20 for adults and $16 for kids ages 6 to 12) on Fort Lauderdale Beach or Historic Stranahan House Museum (335 SE 6th Avenue; $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and $7 for students), particularly lovely when it's decorated Victorian-style for the winter holidays.

Offering a robust "look back" into Fort Lauderdale's early days are several museum buildings of History Fort Lauderdale (231 Southwest Second Avenue; access to all three museums is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $7 for students). Located in the former 1905-era New River Inn is the History Museum with exhibits covering prehistoric times through the modern era. The 1907-era Pioneer House Museum is set up with period furnishings, antique dolls and toys, much as it was back in the day, while the 1899 Schoolhouse Museum has period wooden desks and textbooks.

Hollywood Beach Boardwalk

This 2.5-mile promenade (101 S. Broadwalk) along the Atlantic Ocean is a wonderful place to stroll. The boardwalk connects three parks, 50 restaurants and dozens of shops. You can walk the boardwalk or rent a bike, and there are benches and public restrooms along the way.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Clocking in at 180 acres, the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park (3109 E, Sunrise Boulevard, between the Intracoastal Waterway and SR A1A) lets people leave the crowds of Fort Lauderdale behind for a more relaxed experience. Within the park, there's a concession stand where you can rent bikes, kayaks and book Segway tours. Or, just enjoy the walking trails at a leisurely pace. As you walk along the Intracoastal, keep your eyes peeled and you may spy manatees. There's also a Water Taxi stop here.

Bottom line

Fort Lauderdale is a vibrant vacation destination on its own, but it's also one of the easiest home ports for embarking on a cruise. Port Everglades is so close to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport; it's a breeze to make your way from your flight to ship. Complete Guide to Cruising from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

When it comes to departure points for a cruise, it’s hard to beat Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

With nearly 4 million cruise passengers each year, Port Everglades comes as one of the busiest ports in Florida (along with Miami and Port Canaveral ), which also means its one of the busiest cruise ports in the world.

Spread out a bit more than the Port of Miami, it can be a bit confusing to navigate the port if you’re a first-timer or if you simply haven’t sailed from there in a while. Not to worry, our guide below will give you all the details you need to know to sail from the South Florida port.

Port Everglades Location

When it comes to convenience, it’s hard to beat the location of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Sitting right at the edge of the Atlantic, ships can leave from the port and be in the open water in a matter of minutes.

Meanwhile, the port is also extremely close to the Fort Lauderdale airport. The airport is just three miles away, or about 10 minutes. In other words you can fly in and be at your ship within an hour — even accounting for getting off the plane and getting to your ride.

Of course, while many people fly in and head directly to the cruise port, the entire South Florida region is a tourist destination. Therefore, you may be coming to the port from somewhere other than the airport. In that case, here’s the distance and mileage from several points of interest in the area:

Port Everglades Cruise Terminals

The cruise terminals at Port Everglades are spread out compared to many other ports like Miami. There are two distinct regions — Northport and Midport. Northport is comprised of Terminals 2, & 4. Midport consists of Terminals 18, 19, 21, 25, 26, & 29. Given the higher number of terminals, most people cruise from Midport facilities.

Terminal 2 Renovated a few years ago, Terminal 2 is home to Princess Cruises. One of the unique features of the terminal is that it’s setup for Princess’ Ocean Medallion service, which is a wearable device that can replace your room keycard. The terminal offers 85,000 square feet of space, including about 21,000 square feet for passenger waiting, so you should never feel cramped.

Terminal 4 Sailing Disney Cruise Line? Then you’ll sail from Terminal 4, the last cruise terminal in the Northport area and right next to the Convention Center. This terminal was recently redone to honor Disney and features a “Finding Nemo” motif on your way to the ship.

Terminal 18 Sailing on Royal Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale? There’s a good chance you’ll sail from Terminal 18. It’s the main Royal Caribbean terminal and serves some of the largest ships in the cruise line’s fleet (Oasis-class vessels). As with all the terminals, there are parking options right nearby.

Terminal 19 Sitting on the south edge of Midport, Terminal 19 offers 1,300′ of berth and a cruise terminal that’s nearly 100,000 square feet. There’s tons of parking within walking distance. Given the location right next to Terminal 18, there’s also a good chance that one of the world’s largest cruise ships will be right next to your ship on cruise day.

Terminal 21 In the “U”-shaped cove in the port with Terminals 18 & 19, Terminal 21 is on the eastern edge of the port. Like other terminals in the port, it offers a huge amount of space, including nearly 1,500′ of berth space and 50 check-in stations to make things as quick as possible to get on the ship.

Terminal 25 There’s been a recent trend toward cruise lines building spectacular modern terminals and Terminal 25 fits the bill for Celebrity Cruises. As home to Celebrity — and the fleet’s most modern ships — Port Everglades has a sleek terminal to go along with those vessels.

Terminal 26 Toward the southern end of the port, Terminal 26 is perhaps the easiest terminal to get to. It’s right along the entrance road at the port. Parking is available at the Midport Garage (also known as the Palm Garage), right across the street from the cruise terminal.

Terminal 29 Terminal 29 is a bit out of the way from the other terminals at the southernmost end of the cruise port facilities. It’s an older terminal, but still perfect for getting on the ship. One issue is that the official port parking garage is a bit of a trek from here. You’ll want to park and then take the free shuttle to the terminal.

Hotels Near the Port

Once again, the location of Port Everglades offers a big advantage for cruise passengers. Sitting right near the airport and near A1A that runs along the beach, there are a number of hotels that are within just minutes of the port.

Even better news is that given the popularity of cruising from Fort Lauderdale, the hotels in the area cater to cruise passengers. A number of them offer up perks like cruise parking or shuttles to the cruise port.

As a rule of thumb, the hotels that are away from the beach typically have better prices and more benefits to attract cruisers. Those mega hotels right on the water usually make you pay dearly to park and often have resort fees as well. Look for hotels near the airport or those within walking distance of the port for the best deals.

Getting to Port Everglades (Transportation)

Given the location of the port, getting there is a breeze, especially if you are flying in. But even if you live in the area and plan on driving, you can still easily get to your ship and park at the port. We’ve covered all the ways to get to your cruise with our port transportation article . Below we have the highlights on the most popular ways to get to Port Everglades.

Driving to Port Everglades If you are already in South Florida, then you can simply drive to the port. One thing that you’ll need to keep in mind is if you are sailing from Northport (Terminals 2 or 4) or from Midport (Terminals 18-29). Depending on your cruise terminal, you want to use a different entrance to get into the port so that you can get to your ship faster.

The good news is that parking at any cruise terminal in Port Everglades is convenient and easy. Each terminal has a nearby parking area, typically a garage (Palm or Heron). It costs $20 per day to park at Port Everglades. 

Uber/Lyft Flying into Fort Lauderdale or Miami? Or maybe you just don’t want to deal with driving? Uber and Lyft are convenient options to the port. They offer service in both Miami or Fort Lauderdale (including airports), so no matter where you are, you can get a ride. We’ve estimated the cost of a ride from certain points of interest below. Keep in mind that these rates are for the entire car, not per person.

Taxi Are you more “old school”? Cabs are abundant all throughout South Florida to get you to Port Everglades. In general the estimated fares are higher than you’ll find with Uber and Lyft. Hotel Shuttles If you plan to stay in a hotel the night before your cruise, then look for a hotel that offers a shuttle to the cruise port. It’s an extra perk that’s great to have on cruise day. While some hotels offer rides for free, usually you will pay a nominal fee for the service. Even with a charge, it’s an affordable way to the port. Parking For Your Cruise

If you’re driving into Fort Lauderdale to cruise, then you’re going to need a spot to park your car. Fortunately there’s an entire industry surrounding cruise parking in Fort Lauderdale. We have all your options on our Port Everglades cruise parking page here . Below, we have general information regarding your parking options.

Parking at the Port By far the easiest and most convenient spot to park is at the port. Port Everglades has multiple parking facilities near the cruise terminals, giving you the ability to park right at your cruise ship. That means you can drive and arrive when you want, and then head home the second you get off the ship. Given the number of parking spots at the port, you don’t have to reserve a spot ahead of time. Simply show up on cruise day and park.

Parking at the port runs $20 per day for most vehicles. Have an oversized vehicle that doesn’t fit in a normal parking space? In that case, you’ll pay $25 per day. Parking at Port Everglades is comparable to other ports, though the costs can still add up. 

If you are a disabled cruise passenger, then you might be able to park for free at the port. Florida laws allow for free parking if you meet requirements such as having a Florida Toll Exemption Permit, car modifications such as hand or foot controls, ramps, and lifts, and/or a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate. If you think you might meet one of these requirements, contact the port at 954-468-3680 to learn how to park for free. It’s a great way to save some cash.

Independent Parking Lots As is the case in most port cities, there are independent lots near the cruise port. While these lots aren’t as convenient as parking right at the ship, they have the advantage of being cheaper. Plus, the lots will have shuttles to take you right to the ship. So if you don’t need to park right at the ship and don’t mind an extra 10 minutes to get to the ship, you can save significantly. Rates for independent lots run around $8 to $12 per day.

Hotels with Cruise Parking As we mentioned earlier, there is no shortage of hotels in the area offering perks to cruise passengers. Hotels range from those that are literally walking distance to the port to the popular “Marina Mile” (which is a straight shot to the terminals) to spots around the airport. No matter where you want to stay and how much you want to spend, you’ll find a hotel that caters to cruise passengers by offering cruise parking.

Sometimes this parking is included with a one night’s stay, other times you will need to book a parking package. Dropping Off/Picking Up Passengers

If you’re a cruise passenger, it doesn’t get any easier than letting someone else worry about the driving and simply being dropped off or picked up after your cruise.

Unlike some other ports, Port Everglades has security checkpoints where those 18 years or older need to show identification/passenger ticket to get into the terminal area . Just be ready as you approach the checkpoint at the entrance to the port to make the line go faster.

Once inside the port, you’ll want to follow the signage to the appropriate cruise terminal for the ship. Keep in mind that there are a number of twists and turns in order to get around with so many terminals in a relatively small space. Meanwhile, if there are lots of ships in port, navigating can be stressful. It might be helpful to have one person navigate so the driver can focus on the road.

As you approach the port, you’ll see the signs for the passenger drop-off and pick-up areas. Pull up to the appropriate spot and you’ll be able to unload and load passengers.

Security/Check In

Before you can get onto the ship, you have to check in and pass through security. The good news is that it’s no big deal and in most cases can be done in 15 minutes or less.

When to Arrive These days most cruise lines have switched over to having staggered check in. This type of check-in gives you a 30-minute assigned window on when to arrive. While the ship might board from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., you might be asked to arrive between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Staggered check-in reduces crowds right at the start time of boarding, making the whole process smoother.

If you are assigned a check-in time, then you should aim to arrive at that time. Don’t arrive early.

The second method is the classic boarding window, though it seems fewer ships use this method now. The ship will board between hours such as 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Passengers can arrive at any time in this window.

If this is how your ship boards, we suggest actually arriving later in the boarding window. There is often a rush of passengers right at the start of boarding — and the ship may not be ready to accept passengers. In other words, if you don’t want the possibility of having to wait around to board, then arrive later in the window.

Security Cruise security is somewhat similar to that of an airport, but much less stressful. As you arrive, you’ll show your ID and boarding documents to make sure you are supposed to be on the ship. Then, you’ll put your bag through an x-ray machine as you walk through a metal detector. There’s no need to remove things like liquids from your luggage, nor do you need to remove shoes, belts, or laptops.

From there, you’ll head to check-in.

Checking In Most cruise lines have moved to allow passengers to check in online ahead of time. If you choose to do this, you’ll board with your boarding documents but be able to skip the traditional check-in lines. Your cabin keycard will be in a sealed envelope at your cabin door.

If you check-in the traditional way (or have some loose ends to tie up before boarding), you’ll stand in line and wait for an open check-in agent. Many terminals at Port Everglades have dozens of check-in stations, so the line moves quickly. Here you will assign a payment method for your onboard account, get your room key, and then board the ship. Your time with an agent will only take a few minutes, and then you’ll be ready to start your cruise.

Disembarkation

One of oddest things you’ll notice on your cruise is that everyone can’t wait to board the ship when you depart, but are just as eager to get off the ship when it gets back home.

When you debark, you can have the option of setting large bags outside the cabin the night before. The crew will pick them up and deliver the bags to the terminal for you. In this case you’ll need to wait until your debarkation group is told it’s time to get off the ship.

Instead, many people choose to carry all of their bags with them. The advantage is that this “self debarkation” group is the first group allowed off the ship. But since so many people choose the option, it can still be some time before you get off the vessel.

Once off the ship, you will be steered to the arrival hall where you will pick up your luggage (if you have it) and then head through customs to be admitted back into the United States. Port Everglades has both Global Entry and the Mobile Passport app , which can help you get through the lines more quickly.

Once through the CBP checkpoint, you’ll exit the terminal and find your transportation back to your hotel, airport, or home.

Things to Do Near the Port

As we mentioned, South Florida and Fort Lauderdale are known for their tourism. That means there’s quite a lot to do within a short drive of the cruise terminals. Here is just a sample of things going on in the area…

Seminole Hard Rock Casino Gambling on a cruise ship is always a popular pastime, but you don’t have to wait until you get to the ship in order to try your luck. The Seminole Hard Rock Casino is about 20 minutes from Port Everglades and is the largest and nicest casino in the area. Try your hand at any number of games in the massive gaming area. Also, there’s no missing the casino. They’ve recently built a massive guitar-shaped hotel as an addition that can be seen for miles around.

Las Olas Beach Fort Lauderdale’s beaches are some of the nicest in the world, and the heart of the beach is Las Olas. Just north of the port, it’s a large, wide white-sand beach with lots of facilities and lined with restaurants and shops. Even if you don’t go to the beach, it’s a good idea to at least take a stroll on the waterfront to get a feel for what Fort Lauderdale has to offer.

Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi This area is unique due to the number of canals and waterways that run inland. In fact, there are so many that water taxis run circuits around Fort Lauderdale . It’s more than just a unique way to get around the city. For $40 a person, you can hop on and hop off as you please as you get a chance to see huge houses, even larger yachts, and learn about the area. It’s a great way to get a tour of the city in a memorable way.

What Time Should I Schedule My Flight Home? Fort Lauderdale has a big advantage over many other cruise ports in that it’s literally just a few minutes from the airport. If you are flying from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, you can get from the cruise port to the airport in 10 minutes. If you are flying from Miami, however, expect the ride to take at least 45 minutes, and upwards of an hour in heavy traffic.

Cruise ships arrive back to port early in the morning (6-7 a.m.) and debarking can take 2-3 hours from then. That gets you off the ship anywhere from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in most cases. For that reason, we’d suggest the earliest to schedule your flight is 11 a.m. if flying from Fort Lauderdale. Flying out at noon gives you even more breathing room. We will say that we’ve caught flights considerably earlier, however.

If departing Miami, then we’d suggest noon at the very earliest. Flying out after 1 p.m. would be ideal to give you enough time to get off the ship, get to the airport, and get through security.

A Guide to Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port Terminals

Its sandy beaches and sunny climate make it a popular destination for travelers looking for sun and surf.

From boating and deep-sea fishing to waterskiing and snorkelling, there are plenty of water-based activities to enjoy.

There is also lots to do on land , including hiking and wildlife viewing at the Everglades National Park.

Millions of cruise passengers travel through Port Everglades each year, making it one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. Walk along Las Olas Boulevard, enjoy the sun and sand of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood beaches, see turtles and manatees at the Everglades, or cruise along the city’s scenic canal waterways during a stay before or after your cruise.

The city’s restaurants features some of the best seafood South Florida has to offer as well as renowned chefs celebrating cuisine from around the world. Fort Lauderdale is also home to world-class shopping experiences, from rare antiques to leading fashion labels.

Fort Lauderdale Cruise Terminals

Port Everglades is among the busiest cruise ports in the world serving nearly 4 million passengers each year. The port has eight modern and accessible cruise terminals with comfortable seating areas, snack and beverage machines, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Northport includes Terminals 1, 2 and 4 and Midport is home to Terminals 18, 19, 21, 25, 26 and 29.

Terminal 1 is dedicated for ferry services to the Bahamas, while cruises use the port’s other passenger terminals. For example, Terminal 2 serves cruise ships operated by Princess Cruises . Recently renovated, it accommodates the cruise operator’s Ocean Medallion service that enables passengers to use wearable technology to access enhanced services before, during and after their cruise. The terminal has a spacious 20,000 square foot waiting area.

Situated next to the convention center, Terminal 4 was renovated in 2015 and serves mainly Carnival Cruise Line ships. Royal Caribbean is based at Terminal 19, which welcomes the cruise line’s largest ships. Celebrity Cruises operates from Terminal 25, a sleek and modern terminal and home for the line’s Celebrity Edge.

Fort Lauderdale has several cruise terminals and they are:

Getting to Port Everglades

There are three entrances for Port Everglades. Located close to shops and restaurants, the Northport entrance is found at the 17th Street Causeway at Eisenhower Boulevard.

The Midport entrance is at State Road 84 off U.S. 1 and is the closest entrance to most airport hotels . I-595 East leads directly to the port and serves as the entrance for Southport. If you are using GPS to guide you to the port, its official address is 1850 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316.

By road, the port is accessible from I-595, I-95 and I-75 as well as U.S. 1 and Florida’s Turnpike. The port is the only cruise port in the United States adjacent to an international airport, making it convenient located for cruise passengers traveling by air.

Miami International is also 27 miles south of Port Everglades, while Palm Beach International Airport is 50 miles to the north.

Port Everglades is just a 10-minute drive from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. If traveling to the port by car, there are several routes depending on where you are arriving.

If you are renting a car, follow signs toward U.S. 1 North when leaving the airport’s car rental area before following signs for Port Everglades and Eller Drive directly to the port. From terminal’s 1 through 4, travel along U.S. 1 North before exiting on 17th Street and using the 17th Street Causeway to enter the port.

Taxi – Uber/Lyft

You can get to Port Everglades by taxi from anywhere in the Fort Lauderdale area, including the airport.

Most taxis accept major credit cards. Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft are also options from the airport and other points in and around Fort Lauderdale. Taxis generally cost between $15 and $20 each way between the airport and port, while ridesharing services are slightly cheaper with fares between $10 and $15.

Airport Shuttles

Several airport shuttles link each airport terminal with the port. The Go Airport shuttle, for example, offers connections between the airport and port every 15 to 20 minutes using air-conditioned vans.

Other options including for passengers arriving at Miami International Airport are Metro Shuttle Service, Florida Shuttle Transportation, Port of Miami Shuttle and the Florida Express Bus.

Some cruise lines also offer dedicated shuttles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as well as Miami’s airport.

Hotel Shuttles

Hotel shuttles link several accommodation options in the Fort Lauderdale area with Port Everglades. Many hotels near Port Everglades provide free shuttles to and from the airport as well as the cruise port if you are staying overnight at the hotel.

Public Transportation & Rail

Using public transit, the port is accessible using the Number 40 bus from Downtown Fort Lauderdale. This option is perfect for anyone staying in downtown hotels and cruising from Northport. The Sun Trolley also provides access to the port.

Fort Lauderdale is accessible by rail with Virgin Trains USA (formerly Brightline) services from Miami and West Palm Beach. The Tri-Rail commuter train also connects the city with Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County.

Nationwide trains operated by Amtrak also stop at Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale stations. If arriving by train, you can travel to the port area by taxi or ridesharing services.

Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port Parking

The cruise port offers security-patrolled public parking close to ships. All parking lots are within walking distance of cruise terminals. The only exception is terminal 29, which does not have dedicated parking nearby. A free shuttle connects the terminal with the Palm Parking Garage.

All parking garages and surface lots have dedicated spaces for disabled passengers, providing barrier-free access to and from terminals via crosswalks and elevators.

Offering up to 1,818 spaces, Heron Parking Garage serves terminals 2 and 4. Terminal 2 can easily accessed via an elevated bridge with moving walkways. Follow the orange colored signs.

The Palm Parking Garage hosts 1,966 spaces serving terminals 19, 21, 25, 26 and 29. A free shuttle service is provided between Cruise Terminal 29 and the Palm Parking Garage. A 600-space surface parking lot is located outside terminal 18, while parking lot 19 provides 400 surface parking spaces between terminals 18 and 19.

Hourly and daily parking are available at all parking garages and surface lots, with maximum daily rates set at $20 or $25 for over-sized vehicles (rates current as of December 2023). Parking is $4 for up to an hour and $8 for up to 5 hours, with $1 charged per hour for each additional hour up to the daily maximum.

Best Time to Visit and Cruise from Fort Lauderdale Florida?

For Lauderdale is at its best between December and April, so it is no wonder that peak cruise season runs from November to April. The weather is calm and pleasant, and you will find more comfortable temperatures during the winter and spring.

Temperatures are consistently between 60 and 80 degrees. The period is a popular time to visit, especially during the holidays, so it is important to book any hotel stays in advance.

Besides great weather, spring offers plenty to do in Fort Lauderdale and South Florida. It is the start of the festival season when the region hosts the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, Las Olas Art Fair, Tortuga Music Festival and more.

The winter is also filled with great events, including Christmas on Las Olas and the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade.

Although cruises depart Fort Lauderdale throughout the year, summer and fall months are most prone to rain. Hurricane season also stretches from June to November.

Summer months are known for their hot and humid summer weather, with temperatures soaring above 90 degrees. Between May and September is a great time to enjoy deep sea fishing, snorkeling, and other watersports.

While the period between May and November may not offer the most comfortable weather, you will find better hotel deals. There are also fantastic events, like the Wilton Manors Halloween Experience and the Hollywood Beach Latin Festival in August.

Where to stay near the port?

If you want to stay close to your cruise ship, the Port Everglades area near the 17th Street Causeway is a great option. You are also close to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport .

With views of the Intracoastal Waterway, hotels in this area are close the 17th Street’s diverse collection of restaurants and shops. The Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina, Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port and Pier Sixty-Six Hotel and Marina are within a ten-minute walk of Port Everglades. The area is also home to the Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Lauderdale.

Hotels surrounding Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are ideal if you have an early flight home or arrive late, and if you are only planning to stay a night before or after your cruise.

Only a 15-minute drive from the beach and ten minutes from the cruise port, this well-connected area is also convenient for exploring the city. Options include the Crowne Plaza Hotel Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise, Hampton Inn Fort Lauderdale Airport North, and Ramada by Wyndham Fort Lauderdale Airport/Cruise Port.

If you want to spent time along the coast, Fort Lauderdale Beach is a fantastic option. From affordable hotels to luxury beach resorts, all budgets are catered in the area. You are steps from world class activities on the water.

Known for its art galleries and nightlife, there family-friendly area also has a wide selection of restaurants and shops. Fort Lauderdale Beach is where you will find The Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale, The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, The Atlantic Hotel and Spay, W Fort Lauderdale, and DoubleTree by Hilton Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Hollywood Beach is another destination where you can enjoy the sun, sand and water. Although the location is slightly further from Port Everglades, the cruise port is still easily accessible from this high-end neighborhood. Home to outstanding resorts with easy beach access and the Hollywood Boardwalk, the area also has excellent restaurants and a lively nightlife. A popular choice is the family friend resort Margaritaville at Hollywood Beach. Other options include the Diplomat Beach Resort Hollywood, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton.

The area around Las Olas Boulevard close to Downtown Fort Lauderdale sits between Hollywood Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Great restaurants and interesting shops are within walking distance of hotels.

From bars and clubs to movie theatres and canals, you are in the heart of ‘The Venice of America’. The neighborhood is also home to the Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, the Museum of Discovery and Science, and Stranahan House Museum. Hotels in the area include the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Fort Lauderdale Downtown/Las Olas, Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale and Riverside Hotel.

Where to shop near Port Everglades?

Fort Lauderdale is a major shopping destination with shops catering to any taste and budget. Port Everglades is a short drive from many of the city’s top retail destinations.

Adjacent to the port area is 17th Street, offering convenient shopping if you are staying close to Port Everglades or if you want to make a last-minute shopping trip. Along with several hotels, 17th Street has several pharmacies, banks, restaurants, cafes and shops between Federal Highway and the Seventeenth Street Causeway Bridge.

Downtown is renowned for its shopping, and you will also find fantastic boutiques in Fort Lauderdale Beach and Hollywood Beach .

About a 20-minute bus ride or 15-minute drive north of the cruise port is The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale . This world-class destination houses great shops and restaurants, offering one of the city’s premier dining and shopping experiences.

Las Olas Boulevard is about ten minutes from the cruise port and is renowned for its independently owned boutiques, inviting cafes and acclaimed restaurants.

Both destinations are also accessible using the Greater Fort Lauderdale’s Water Taxi system.

To the south is Dania, home to Antique Row. You will find more than 100 dealers along one square mile of Federal Highway selling every conceivable collectible and antique.

The Design Center of the Americas is also in Dania. At the intersection of I-95 and Griffin Road, the 775,000-square-foot center boasts interior designer studios, furniture showrooms and more.

Further afield, Westfield Broward in Plantation is within a 20-minute drive west of Port Everglades. The sprawling shopping center has over 80 shops and restaurants as well as a 12-screen ci.

A little further west is Sawgrass Mills , a popular destination for bargain hunters. With nearly 400 retail outlets and restaurants, the shopping mall is one of the largest in the United States.

Sights to see

Top destinations in Fort Lauderdale include:

Las Olas Boulevard : This popular shopping and dining destination is renowned for its tropical scenery and lively vibe. You will find welcoming courtyards lined with shops, galleries, clubs, bars and restaurants.

Fort Lauderdale Beaches : With 23 miles of sandy shores, there are plenty of beaches to choose from in the city including Hollywood Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Deerfield Beach and Hillsboro Beach. You can also don your swimsuit and go for a swim at Fort Lauderdale Beach east of Las Olas Boulevard or the less crowded Dania Beach near Port Everglades. Pompano Beach and its 18 shipwrecks is popular for diving.

Bonnet House Museum and Gardens : A 1920s-era oceanfront property, you can step back in time at this historic home on Birch Road while enjoying art displays throughout the property. The gardens are one of the last examples of barrier island habitat native to South Florida.

Museum of Discovery and Science : With hundreds of interactive exhibits and live demonstrations, the museum is a must-see for families and anyone interested in science. One of the largest museums of its kind in Florida, the museum also has flight simulators and an IMAX theater.

Intracoastal Waterway : Stretching 3,000 miles, the waterway connects the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Meandering between the city and the Everglades, it also provides easy access to water activities and land-based attractions using a system of 300 miles of inland canals.

Sawgrass Mills & Recreational Park : Offering the typical Everglades experience, you can enjoy an airboat tour through alligator habitats and visit a reptile zoo at the recreational park. Sawgrass Mills is also a sprawling outlet mall with nearly 400 shops and restaurant, a bargain-hunter’s dream.

Best ways to get around Fort Lauderdale

With most of the city’s attractions close to Port Everglades, getting around Fort Lauderdale is easy.

Taxis and ridesharing services are a quick and inexpensive options to travel between destinations, and most local trips cost less than $20. Many hotels also offer free shuttlers to and from the cruise port and the airport as well as major attractions.

If you plan to spend a few days in Fort Lauderdale, renting a car is a great way to explore the area. You have additional freedom and will not be limited by public transit schedules. You can also experience more of South Florida, including Miami and West Palm Beach.

Fort Lauderdale’s Water Taxi system is a unique way of seeing the city and getting around. Water taxis travel along the Intracoastal Waterways and the New River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale.

They stop at 14 points of interest, including The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale and the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. You can hop on and off throughout the day and water taxis run every 25 to 35 minutes. There’s an all day pass, evening and multi-day pass available for purchase. The All Day Pass is valid between 10AM-10PM on the Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood Express Route and costs $40 for adults, and $35 for seniors and members of the military. Tickets for children aged 5 to 11 is $20 and it’s free for children under 5.

Sun Trolley connects downtown with the beach and Las Olas Boulevard. Most routes are free, although there is a $1 per ride fare for the Beach Link and Las Olas Link routes. A $3 day pass is also available for those routes.

Broward County Transit operates commuter buses in the city, including the Number 40 bus linking Port Everglades with downtown. Each ride is $2 for adults and $1 for children 18 and under. A day pass costs $5, or you can buy three-day, seven-day and 10-ride passes for between $12 and $20.

A fun way to get around Fort Lauderdale is by bike. Ideal for shorter trips, you can reserve a bicycle using the Broward B-cycle bike-sharing service. Stations are found in popular destinations including Downtown Fort Lauderdale and Central Beach. Rentals cost $5 + tax for the first 30 minutes (Single Use Pass). You can also pay per minute ($0.30 + tax / min).

Guide to the New Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Port

I f you want to take a Caribbean or Bahamian cruise, Florida is one of the best states to cruise from. There are several different cruise ports throughout the state, with many options for cruise ships and cruise lines.

Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale Florida, is one of these popular cruise ports. The Fort Lauderdale cruise port is home to a new Disney Cruise Line terminal. This port can be the perfect starting point for your cruise family vacation.

Why Cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida?

If you are flying in for your family cruise, you may wonder which cruise port to leave from. In general, I recommend looking at the specific cruise first, then the cruise port second (especially for the Florida cruise ports, since there are several options).

However, Fort Lauderdale is an excellent option to consider. It’s easy to fly to, with flight options through either Fort Lauderdale Airport or the Miami International Airport.

While the Fort Lauderdale airport is generally easier, you may find more options through Miami. Both are short drives from the airport, unlike Port Canaveral which is a longer distance from the Orlando Airport.

Regardless of which airport you fly through, I’d recommend staying overnight at least the night before. Flight delays are always a risk, and if you fly in a day earlier, you’ll have some extra time.

As someone who lives in the Northeast, I also enjoy flying in a day or two earlier so that I can enjoy the Florida weather before my cruise vacation from Fort Lauderdale.

While the Fort Lauderdale cruise port (Port Everglades) is not new, Disney Cruise Line has just opened a brand-new cruise terminal. I had the opportunity to sail out of this terminal for my recent cruise on the Disney Dream . In addition to Port Canaveral, this is one of the more popular Disney Cruise departure ports.

Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Port

Whether you are coming from the airport or hotel, or driving, it’s easy to access the Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale port. You will need to show ID to get through port security, but you’ll be able to take a cab or ride share if you aren’t driving.

It’s a large port, so it’s important to know that the Disney Cruise Line terminal at Port Everglades is Terminal 4. There are likely to be quite a few ships in port.

Parking is available in a port parking garage, which opens up at 10:45 AM. If you have a lot of luggage, you can pull up to the port first to drop off luggage with porters, before being directed to the parking garage.

Arriving via ride share or being dropped off? They’ll be able to pull up along Terminal 4 to drop you off at the terminal.

Once you arrive, you can leave any luggage with the porters to be delivered to your stateroom later in the afternoon/early evening. You’ll need to carry anything you don’t check, and keep in mind that your stateroom may not be ready when you arrive on the ship.

Disney Cruise Line mails your luggage tags in advance to your home, so be sure to have them on your bag. If you happen to forget them, the porters can write you out a tag.

These porters are not employed by Disney and do accept tips. Make sure to have some cash available to tip. Make sure no essentials (especially your Passport and other documents, as well as medication) are in your day bag and not in this checked luggage.

Checking In For Your Cruise

Once you check your luggage in with a porter (if you choose to), you’ll be directed to go into the terminal. We saw overhead fans in this outdoor queue area, meaning some people may need to wait outside. But we walked right into the terminal.

We checked in with a terminal employee, although most of our actual check-in was completed online. There are separate lines for Castaway Club members and first-time cruisers. If you have a DisneyBand+ (which is completely optional), they can assist in activating it.

Once we completed our check-in, we went through security. This is very similar to an airline security process, but you won’t need to remove your shoes or any liquids in your bag. You also don’t have to follow the TSA liquids rule .

When you check in online, you’ll receive a confirmation with a QR code. You’ll need this QR code until you get your Key to the World key on your stateroom door, so be sure to keep it handy.

There’s plenty of seating, restrooms, and vending machines in this main terminal. Our boarding group had already been called at this point, so we walked right up to enter the ship. Before walking through the Mickey Ear entrance, you can choose to take a group photo.

Like other cruise ports, staterooms are generally not ready until about 1:30-2 pm. Most people go right to lunch in Cabanas and then go to their rooms. Luggage is delivered throughout the afternoon into early evening.

Disembarking Through the Disney Cruise Line Port Everglades Flight

If you choose to have Disney Cruise Line handle your bags, you’ll need to put them out the night before. Make sure you haven’t packed anything you’ll need in the morning (like your toothbrush or clothing), in this bag.

You can choose to do a walk-off if you don’t check your bags. In that case, you’ll be one of the first off the ship.

Otherwise, you’ll need to remember the character that was on the bag tag of your checked bags. When that bag tag is called, you can disembark the ship. You’ll find your luggage on or near a table labeled with that character.

Once you have all of your luggage, you can go through customs with your passport. Then, you’ll be directed out of the terminal based on where you are going and what type of transportation you are taking there. Our disembarkation (we did a walk-off) was very quick and easy for this latest cruise.

Staying Overnight Before Your Flight

We highly recommend staying at a nearby hotel the night before your cruise, if you need to fly in. With flight delays and lost luggage always a risk, it’s a good idea to have some extra time.

This map (with affiliate links) will show some nearby lodging options. There are some wonderful hotels right on the beach, or you can choose a more reasonably priced chain with fewer amenities. While some hotels offer paid shuttle service to the airport, a ride share may be less expensive.

Luxury cruise line selling world cruise suite for $1.7 million

(CNN) —  Cruise vacations cover a range of budgets, with some bargain jaunts costing a few hundred dollars, while more upscale, longer voyages lay on more perks to justify the big expense.

But a new offering by luxury operator Regent Seven Seas Cruises raises the price tag to eye-watering levels, with a suite on an upcoming 140-day world voyage costing $1.7 million.

The cruise line is pitching this 2027 voyage as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” on board its Seven Seas Splendor liner. Over 20 weeks, this cruise ship will visit 71 ports, including stopovers in Bali, Sydney and Mumbai.

Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, told CNN Travel the cruise line has seen a “fantastic response” since announcing the voyage earlier this week, and that there’s been “strong interest” among prospective passengers in the $1.7 million Regent Suite.

Whatever room guests opt for, there are steep costs involved, with the most affordable room on board starting at $91,499 per guest. Meanwhile, the 4,443 square feet Regent Suite is designed for two people, so that high price tag works out as $839,999 per guest.

Prospective passengers willing to splash that kind of cash get what DeMarco calls a “palatial” apartment in which to ride out the world cruise – think original Picasso art on the wall, 14th-deck ocean views and a grand piano.

The heady price also includes first class air tickets for cruise-associated domestic US flights, and business class tickets for all international flights. Plus, Regent Suite guests have access to a variety of perks including a personal tour guide at each destination, in-suite spa services, an on-call butler and personalized stationery for writing dispatches home.

Regent Seven Seas’ 2027 world cruise officially opens for reservations on April 10, 2024, but prospective guests have been able to  preregister  since Wednesday.

Onboard decadence

Whether guests opt for the Regent Suite or not, prospective Regent Seven Seas Cruises travelers should expect onboard decadence.

The Seven Seas Splendor ship hosts an art collection worth $5 million, including two works by Joan Miró, the aforementioned Picasso hanging in the Regent Suite, and another Picasso adorning the walls of the onboard steakhouse.

Speaking of food, the cruise line’s pledged to carry 13,000 pounds of lobster, 14,000 pounds of filet mignon, 3,600 pounds of smoked salmon, 150 pounds pounds of caviar and 14,000 bottles of champagne for its 2027 world cruise.

Flights, excursions and alcohol are included in all ticket prices. And every suite has a private balcony for travelers to enjoy.

Popularity of world cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, is one of several cruise lines that operate annual around-the-world cruises. Every world cruise comes with a pretty steep price tag, with Regent Seven Seas’ offerings at the priciest end of the spectrum.

Cruise line president DeMarco told CNN Travel that the fact Regent Seven Seas’ world cruise is “truly all-inclusive” means there’s “value” associated with these high costs.

The cruise line is currently operating a sold-out 2024 world cruise on board its Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship, while its 2025 world cruise also sold out in what Regent Seven Seas’ claimed was  “record time .” The cruise line’s 2026 world voyage still has suites available at time of writing.

Regent Seven Seas’ announcement comes at a time of high interest in world cruises. Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise, currently circumnavigating the world’s oceans, unexpectedly captured the internet’s imagination earlier this year, with passengers on board documenting their experience via viral TikTok videos.
