We did this trip on spur of the moment and were so glad we did! Mike was very passionate and knowledgeable about the shrimping/oyster industry and we learned so much! We had a small group that day so he went out of his way to answer all of our questions. We especially liked his recommendations for local sea food restaurants! A good time was had by all!

Thank you so much for joining us! We hope to see you again!
We took the trip yesterday and it by far exceeded our expectations. A really well narrated experience by the captain, Mike, and Billy the deckhand, a pair of authentic Cajun fishermen. They truly want to tell the public about their sustainable industry (oysters and shrimp), and they do a great job. I learned a lot, especially about the Gulf of Mexico and its unique ecosystem. These genuine conservationists work hard and are living the life! It should be a great school trip for kids of any age, I wish I'd had something like this when I was at school. This was definitely a highlight of our visit.

Thank you so much for joining us! We are so glad to hear you enjoyed it! Hopefully we see you on your next trip!
What a fun activity to do while visiting Biloxi! The gentleman who hosted my family was entertaining and filled with great information and interesting facts. The boat was safe and comfortable. My family of about 25 members fit on the boat. Everyone, from the youth to the elders had a good time. We were able to experience the shrimping process and were amazed at the sea life that was rangled in, including beautiful blue crabs and interesting fish. We were treated to fresh cooked shrimp, which was a highlight for everyone. An awesome time!

Always a big hit when I have friends and family visiting! With shrimp being the centerpiece for most meals when visitors come to the coast, this experience to learn about the industry, local economy and the sea life! I took my family including my two nephews (6 & 3) and they loved seeing the nets get put out, what got scooped up, and being able to hold the shrimp! The boat ride is smooth and pleasant with seats below and on the top deck. The staff is personable and entertaining while always knowledgeable. I had emailed them a few times with questions and they were quick to respond to me! The shrimp tour lasted about 2 hours, and was a great afternoon activity!

Well worth the time and fare for the trip. Very educational. Be sure to get to dock about 30 minutes prior to sailing time as great information about how clams are cultured. Certainly wish the best to the shrimping crew of Biloxi Shrimping! Maybe will be able to get a better audio for upper deck.
Thank you for coming!
Our family has come here multiple years and LOVE this experience. The captain is funny, the deckhands are always amazing/cool/great with kids. He promotes all the local businesses and is extremely informative of not just shrimping, but the history surrounding biloxi. 100/10 recommended booking with them! FYI-- they're dog friendly.
This was a very fun trip! The man running the trip, David, was very kind and personable. He took time to educate everyone on various different topics that make the fishing industry what it is, not just talking about shrimping; this included topics like economics, farming, and even the coast guard! He identified everything that he caught and was very educational about how it was used in todays market, whether it was sold on the docks that we departed from, or turned into something sold on shelves. I really appreciated that he let us move around freely seeing as the experience is over an hour and it can get uncomfortable sitting in the same spot for so long. In addition, he gave us great recommendations for restaurants in the area, seeing as most of us were from out of town. I highly recommend this experience, it is a great price for what you get to do! I will also say, there were a plethora of children on our ride, and the captain was very kind and letting the children be involved in the show-and-tell process. Which I am sure was a delight to them and their parents!
This was such an unexpected pleasure trip. I wanted to learn more about fishing and shrimping. This was a great way to learn. We went out with a full boat and we learned all about shrimp. How to spot good shrimp, what to look for when shopping, and how they freeze seafood! I have been to Biloxi often and wish I had done this trip before. This would be great for all ages. The captain is so knowledgeable and will answer any questions you may have. Then I learned that they take people out to fish and it's not hella expensive. Since I have never done it before I didn't want to pay almost 1000 and be scared. We were leaving the next day so we couldn't go fishing but next season (she said March or April) I will be there with the family!

We had a great time even out of shrimp season! We caught a blue crab and a few shrimp. Definitely worth the few hours!!

#1 Biloxi Casinos
Biloxi's casinos draw gamblers far and wide – and they're a big part of the city's tourism and history. Many of the area's casinos are connected to megaresorts that bring in millions of dollars for the city, and they have certainly seen some changes (and improvements) over the years. All of the city's casinos were originally floating gaming venues: They were required by Mississippi law to be built on barges separate from the land communities (in an attempt to isolate gaming activity from the general public). But when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, all the casinos were either severely damaged or completely destroyed. A new law allowed the casinos to be rebuilt on land and hoteliers invested in the construction of new or refurbished casinos.
Some of the most popular gaming spots in Biloxi include the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino , the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi , IP Casino Resort Spa , Harrah's Gulf Coast and Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel . These properties are not only home to casinos, but also offer accommodations and amenities like spas, fitness centers and pools. Beau Rivage also boasts a theater that receives rave reviews and has featured musical acts like Tony Bennett, ZZ Top and Martina McBride as well as comedians and dance performances. When it comes to gambling, the casinos host everything from table games, roulette and slots to poker rooms and high-stakes card lounges.

Shrimp Boat Tour
I highly recommend the Shrimp Boat tour if you ever find yourself in Biloxi. It was awesome - entertaining and educational for both children and adults alike.
My wife found this tour, I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out it was one of the highlights of our vacation. While the Captain navigated the ship, David explained a ton of stuff about the shrimping industry, dropped the shrimp nets and walked everyone though that, while dragging for shrimp he spoke more about the industry and basically life as a Shrimper. When the net was pulled up, after sorting out some of the critters, he had any of the kids that wanted to see and hold the various fish caught to do so. We didn't have kids on the tour, but the kids loved it and all seemed to have a great time, just as the adults. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour. Great for all ages. Tour took about 75 to 80 minutes.
It was informative, interesting and reasonably priced. Our kids were a little bored for the first twenty minutes while he was explaining the shrimping process and equipment but were really entertained when they pulled in the net and they got to see all the different shrimp and fish. My only issue is that they do not tale reservations. Our boat loaded and they turned away a family that had been waiting to get on because they were full.
Hi, We are glad you and your kids enjoyed the Biloxi Shrimping Trip. I wish we could take reservations because we hate having to turn anyone away, but due to our crazy weather and the fact that we do not take credit cards to be able to pre-sell tickets we are not able to at this time. But we will keep your recommendation and maybe in the future it is something we can accomplish. Thank you so much for your feed back, it is what keeps our company striving for the best for our guest.
This is a great trip. David was both fun and informed about sea life. Trip was fun for both adults and children. David made the trip educational and fun. Would recommend this trip to all ages.
Crew was friendly and very informative. True we didn't really go very far but our kids loved it. They got to see all sorts of different species and even saw a dolphin!
It was a great boat ride and very informative. We learned about gray, white and red shrimp and our guide hit the high spots of the industry, very interesting. Bring the kids. It was between the shoreline and the island. We did throw a rope to a couple of tired guys in a dinghy.
HI, Thanks for taking the time to review us on Trip Advisor. It is important to hear feedback from all of our guest. I noticed that you gave us 3 stars, but did not notice any feed back to indicate the reason. We like all feedback positive or negative, so that we can use it to better our service to our guest. If you would like to voice any other concerns....we would love to hear from you.

I Went On A Shrimp Expedition And This Is What I Learned

Recently, while visiting the “Secret Coast” of Mississippi, I was invited on a Shrimping Tour. The trip was out of the harbor in Biloxi, once known as the Shrimp Capital of the World.
I didn’t know what to expect. Besides knowing that I loved eating shrimp, I really didn’t know that much about the delicacies at the bottom of the sea. Nor was I sure how hands-on the expedition would be. I knew there was a good chance I could get dirty or wet. So I dressed casually and wore close-toed sneakers. I looked forward to this new adventure.
Biloxi Shrimping Trip provided complimentary tours for us. All opinions are my own.
Biloxi Shrimping Trip
The Biloxi Shrimping Trip sets sail in the small craft harbor area of Biloxi and exposes guests to the spectacular world of marine life caught on a genuine shrimping expedition.
We were scheduled for an afternoon expedition, but the weather forecast showed afternoon rain, so we switched to a morning excursion. We boarded the shrimp boat around 10:30, and much to our delight, there were only nine passengers. We had lots of room to wander around and get up close and personal with everything happening.
When we first boarded the boat, we were invited to go up on the top deck. David, our guide, gave us a safety briefing and explained a bit about the area, the varieties of seafood local to the Gulf, and the shrimping process.
If you are like me, when you think about a shrimping expedition, you think about being out in the middle of the ocean. Much to my surprise, many of the shrimp are caught within a mile or so of the harbor.
Upon leaving the harbor, we navigated in the calm, protected waters between Deer Island and the Biloxi shoreline.
Casting The Nets
David then went to the lower level to set the shrimping nets out behind the boat. He provided full details on what makes the net spread and operate correctly. We stayed on the upper level for a better view of what he was doing. After the nets were in the water, they dropped chains to drag along to stir up the shrimp in front of the net.
Catch Of The Day
It wasn’t shrimp season yet, and it was daylight. Most shrimp are out at night. The net catches all sea creatures in its path, along with shrimp.
Once he was ready to pull the first set of nets in, David invited us to come down to the main deck for an up-close view. When the nets were pulled in, the entire catch was presented for viewing. David identified most of the sea creatures in the net. Of course, there were shrimp and several blue crabs, pufferfish, and an oyster fish. Often they also catch flounder, stingray, squid, and other species of local marine life.
Blue crabs are plentiful in the Mississippi Gulf. The only place where they are more abundant is in the Chesapeake Bay Area around Maryland. David gave us a lesson on how to handle the crabs, and we had the opportunity to hold one. If you hold them in the correct place, they cannot hurt you. Hold them elsewhere, and the crab will likely pinch you.
A Shrimping Education
We learned that the Gulf around Biloxi is still a powerhouse when it comes to the shrimp industry. There are more shrimp available than will ever be caught, and there is no danger of overcatching the shrimp in the area. Only 9 percent of the available shrimp are ever caught; 95 percent of all shrimp remain in the ocean to fend for themselves.
The shrimp live near the bottom of the sea and are most active at night.
Guess how many legs a shrimp has. I bet you didn’t guess 26! They have five pairs of jointed legs for walking and five pairs for swimming, known as swimmerets, and three pairs for eating, known as maxillae or feeding appendages. They also have two pairs of sensory antennae, compound eyes, and a tail fan. I’m holding the shrimp by their antennae.
Shrimp come in three colors: white, brown, and pink. All are delicious to eat!
Mississippi Gulf White Shrimp grow to a reasonably large size and have long antennae and smooth shells that help distinguish them from others. Compared to the other shrimp, they are easier to peel and are slightly more tender.
The giant shrimp prize is the Mississippi Gulf Pink Shrimp. They are the largest in the area and can grow up to 11 inches in length. They are also easy to peel and are the preferred choice for boiling and steaming.
Shrimping season starts in May when the shrimp reach a specific size, and it lasts through November.
During our expedition, David put the nets out three times in two different areas. Each time they retrieved some shrimp and crabs but not the large nets full of shrimp I was expecting.
Happy Surprises
I had a lot of pleasant surprises during this experience. It was much more educational than I expected, and I learned more about shrimp than I ever imagined. The fact that was most surprising to me was that you can’t overfish the shrimp. There are more shrimp available than they will ever catch.
The seagulls following our boat for a free meal were also a surprise.
The surprise that put the biggest smile on all our faces was the many dolphins that followed our boat once they noticed the shrimp nets. They came so close you could touch them and were fun to watch.
An Unexpected Event
There were no bad surprises associated with the actual shrimp trip experience. But there was a person under the influence of something who jumped into the harbor and refused to get out. It distracted us a bit since no one knew what crazy thing they might do!
If I had the opportunity to go on another shrimping expedition, I would do it in the afternoon to see if they caught more shrimp. This 70-minute Living Marine Adventure Biloxi ShrimpTrip is a must-do experience when you visit Mississippi’s Secret Coast.

Shrimping trip aboard the sailfish.
While in Biloxi I stumbled upon a tour in which we would ride out in an actual shrimp boat and learn how a shrimp boat works, and watch as the crew throws out a net and then explains what was caught. I decided this would be the perfect educational experience during our short stay in Biloxi. The tour can be found at https://www.biloxishrimpingtrip.com/
It was a brisk November day when we bundled up and set out for our tour. We drove to the marina where we were to board the boat. The only problem we encountered was that we were unsure whether we were in the right place; there were no signs, ticket booths, or anything that would verify we were where we were supposed to be other than the red dot of our GPS signaling our arrival.
We waited around hoping to spot the arrival of the captain or other passengers. Just before our 1:30 departure time, the captain and her shipmate showed up and led us aboard their relatively small shrimping vessel. Several other families boarded the boat as well, making it approximately 15 people in total.
“The Sailfish is a two story shrimp boat with an upper level, open air seating area and a bottom level, closed in, windowed seating area. ”
The Sailfish is a two story shrimp boat with an upper level, open air seating area and a bottom level, closed in, windowed seating area. Being that it was a cold day, everyone aboard chose to sit in the bottom area, not only due to the frigid weather, but this was also the best view of where the crewmate lectured from and showcased the catch from the net.
After a brief introduction and some safety instructions, we set off on the waters of the Mississippi Sound. The learning began right away and did not stop until we docked back at the marina. As the captain maneuvered the boat, the crewman taught us everything from interesting tidbits about the waters to types of shrimp to how to tell if shrimp in the stores is fresh. He also suggested several restaurants in Biloxi to get the best shrimp! While he talked, a 16 foot net was being dragged on the bottom of the Mississippi Sound.
“All in all I can say this was a great experience! For $16.00 each we were able to not only take a tour on the Mississippi Sound, but also learn a great deal about the shrimping business
Once the net was pulled back up, the contents were dumped onto a small viewing/ sorting area. Unfortunately, the catch was extremely sparse; however, the crewman picked up every creature, explained it in detail, and let the passengers get up close and touch them. Several shrimp were passed around to get a good look at. We watched as he informed us about squid, a blue crab, shrimp, and several fish, and then proceeded to provide a much appreciated afternoon snack to the waiting pelicans hovering about.
All in all I can say this was a great experience! For $16.00 each we were able to not only take a tour on the Mississippi Sound, but also learn a great deal about the shrimping business, types of shrimp and other marine creatures, and how a shrimp boat works. I would definitely recommend this tour for families looking for something unique to do while in Biloxi.

Thursday, April 4 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm .
Professor of Landscape Architecture, Pete Melby taught landscape architecture courses at Mississippi State University for 32 years. Through his research, he authored several texts for design of irrigation systems at the request of the landscape contracting industry. Through this collaboration, the team was stimulated to work together evaluating eroding beaches along the Gulf Coast which resulted in the establishment of a salt marsh with native plants creating sand dunes, stabilizing the beaches.
It is this work that inspired Pete Melby to create art depicting the scenes he observed along the beautiful Mississippi Sound as well as pen his suspense novel, “Third in Line”. The protagonist finds herself in the salt marshes and on the offshore fishing beds from New Orleans to Bay St. Louis as she inspects the habitats of the oysters, shrimp and blue crabs of the Gulf Coast. Things to Do in Biloxi, Mississippi
I took a road trip in March from New Orleans to Florida with my parents for the purpose of seeing my 49th state, Alabama. My previous visit to Mississippi, just a quick meal over the state line, gave me no real idea of what to expect in the state. You can read about it in the New Orleans Day Trip post.
I didn’t know that Mississippi has long white sand beaches and lots of birds to see. We headed to Biloxi mainly because it was on the way to Alabama. But, fortuitously, we chose to spend some time in Biloxi because it ended up as a highlight of my trip. There are so many things to do in Biloxi; we could have spent much more time than two days there.
The beaches are the main reason that I loved the area so much. The people are also so very friendly and willing to hold a conversation with you. As happened in much of our trip, the conversation often turns to the talk of hurricanes, which have ravaged the area.
Biloxi is named after the Native American tribe that lived there when the French “discovered” it. Throughout history, it has been declared part of France, England, Spain, the Confederacy, and the US.
Its location near the mouth of the Mississippi River and on the Gulf Coast led to its development as a summer resort for southerners as early as the early 1800s. Since Cajuns also moved in to work in the seafood and cannery industries, you can feel their influence in the food and celebrations.
I am interested in them, but there are a few casinos you can visit in Biloxi.

Biloxi Beaches
Although the water is brown due to the runoff of the Mississippi River and the dirt being trapped in by the area’s barrier island, the sand is soft and white. The shore also gently slopes into the gulf. We found fewer crowds here than farther east and many birds to watch. If you are interested in birds, I found five species new to me, including white pelicans.
Beauvoir Mansion
This Georgian-style house on the coast of Biloxi is almost 200 years old. It was the home to the only president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, and a retirement home for his army’s soldiers. It is set on 52 acres of swamps and woodlands and has a Confederate cemetery. There is also a building containing a museum and library. Although the history of the Confederacy may be problematic, the house is interesting; built on stilts and survived multiple hurricanes. There are waterfront cottages on the property available for nightly rent.
There are tours offered hourly that you can just show up for ( or you can buy here before you go ), or you can pre-book a presidential tour by calling the site. On this tour, which lasts 2-3 hours, you will be privately guided throughout the whole property. If you have any mobility issues, this is the best idea.
Biloxi Shrimp Boat Tour
I am always interested in seeing how food and spirits are produced. One of my best memories from my travels to Maine was a lobster boat tour in Portland.
On every menu along our route, shrimp was on offer. As Bubba Gump said, prepared in hundreds of cooking styles. The Gulf holds some of the sweetest shrimp in the world.
This 70-minute tour took us right offshore within the channel, so the ride was always very calm. There were about 40 people on the boat. We sat on top so we could enjoy the sun and views, but the bottom level gives a better view of the shrimp nets.
We learned about how important shrimp fishing is to the area, why the shrimp are so tasty, and how the season works.
The captain unfurled a shrimp net into the bay so we could see how it functions. It also served to call and excite many laughing gulls who were in the area en mass breeding. Since we didn’t arrive in season, not many shrimp came up in the net because they are still too small. The boat had shrimp and a few local fish in a tank, so we could still see and hold shrimp. In the past, they have pulled up all sorts of marine life in the net, including a sting ray. There are also dolphins that hang out in the harbor.
Shrimping season changes every year but tends to run from May until December. It starts when the water gets warm enough that the shrimp grow large.
We also learned how to tell the difference between the three kinds of shrimp that the gulf produces, brown, white, and pink. They look the same when they are alive, except for the length of their antennae.
Biloxi Lighthouse
I love lighthouses, and this one confused me at first. It doesn’t sit on the water but rather in the middle of Highway 90 (Ocean Road). Because of this, I thought it was a statue, but it is actually a lighthouse.
Built in 1848, it was the first cast-iron lighthouse in the South and stood on the water’s edge. The lighthouse wasn’t moved, but a seawall was built in front of it. It has been kept by females for more years than any other lighthouse in the US.
There are free lighthouse tours daily, weather permitting, at 9 am, which do not require reservations.
Where to Stay in Biloxi, Mississippi
We stayed in the Hampton Inn, Biloxi , and were very happy with it. It was inexpensive, right across from the water, has a pool and jacuzzi, a nice free buffet breakfast, and allows dogs. Each morning I would walk right across the street and walk on the beach.
You can also stay in the guesthouses on the Beauvior Property. You can reserve them by calling the museum.
Where to Eat in Biloxi, Mississippi
We were looking for two things in a dinner restaurant in Biloxi- local food and a great view. We found both at Shaggy’s . The shrimp was excellent, and the hush puppies were the best I had on this road trip, full of sweet onions.
I hope I have inspired you to visit this lovely seaside town on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

I haven’t been to Biloxi, Mississippi, yet; I didn’t think it had such beautiful beaches and wonderful nature. I want to go on a Shrimp Boat Tour because I can eat shrimp for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also, the Biloxi Lighthouse is worth seeing—great tips on how to spend time there.
Ooooooh, heading out on the water in a shrimp boat sounds like such a blast. And I would love to photograph the lighthouse at sunset or sunrise!
Brown beaches, the history of Beauvior Mansion, and a delicious trip on the Shrimp Boat Tour are just a few of Biloxi, Mississippi’s charms. I appreciate you sharing!

Recently, while visiting the "Secret Coast" of Mississippi, I was invited on a Shrimping Tour. The trip was out of the harbor in Biloxi, once known as the Shrimp Capital of the World. I didn't know what to expect. Besides knowing that I loved eating shrimp, I really didn't know that much about the delicacies at the bottom of the sea.
