Finding a travel sponsor for your event, travel blog, or adventures is an important part of achieving success in your field. This comprehensive guide will show you how to get sponsorship for an event or for your travels.

We have found the working on partnerships and developing relationships with our travel sponsors has been of great value not only from our past adventures but for all of our future travels.

Table of Contents

How to Create a Travel Sponsorship Proposal

We learned a great deal about how to find sponsors for our event, the  Mongol Rally.

In this Sponsorship Guide you’ll learn:

  • How to Approach Travel Sponsors
  • How to Define your Goals
  • How to Create an Attractive Package to Get the Sponsors Attention
  • How to Find Sponsorship for Travel
  • What you do After you Have Secured Sponsors
  • What Exposure to Offer
  • When to Start
  • How to Approach Travel Companies
  • How to Fulfill Your Commitments

on how to approach sponsors and we now feel confident when seeking sponsorship that we do indeed have something valuable to offer them.

1. Define your Goals.

Having a hook will help immensely when seeking sponsorship for your travels.

A company may not be interested in sponsoring a blog that is simply going out to backpack around the world. You must find some way to stand out from the crowd. The Mongol Rally gave us and our teammates Rick Griffin and Sherry Ott  a unique adventure to attract new readers and sponsors. Driving 1/3 of the way around the world definitely helps to make you stand out from the sea of travel bloggers and companies feel confident when there is not only the built in audience from the rally, but also the value of combining the audience of three blogs into one event for triple the exposure.

Other travel bloggers that have had great success in finding sponsorship are The Professional Hobo , Go See Write and Nomadic Chick for the Ultimate Train Challenge, As We Travel for their European Train circumnavigation and GlobeTrooper for their hike across the Gobi Desert. Each of these trips was unique, epic and attractive to sponsors.

2. Have an Attractive Package.

Your sponsorship package is the most important aspect of finding sponsorship.

Be clear as to what you can give your sponsor in return for their product or monetary contribution. The first thing we did when putting together our proposal for the Mongol Rally was work on our package. We compiled our numbers and statistics together and input them all into a pdf file explaining what our venture was, what we will offer and how their product will be displayed.

We offered 3 levels of sponsorship.

Give value to the companies that contribute more. Offering 3 levels of sponsorship will give smaller companies the opportunity to get on board, but will nudge larger companies in the direction of offering more. If they give a monetary value along with product sponsorship, they will be more prominently displayed, mentioned more in posts and if you have a car, T-shirt or backpack that will be displaying your sponsors, you they will receive the primo spot on the item.

3. Be Clear on Exposure

1. We clearly defined how many posts we would give each sponsor, how many tweets they would get and how many Facebook shares we would offer.

2. Tell the company what you expect from them.

sponsors travel agencies

Outline exactly what you require from the company you are seeking sponsorship from. People prefer to be told what you want rather than having to think about what to offer. Don’t leave it up to them. Tell them how much product you require, how much money you require and why you are approaching them.

How to Find Travel Sponsors

5. approach companies in your niche.

We are travel bloggers so we approached travel companies or companies that have something to do with adventure. However, the Mongol Rally gave us the opportunity to seek sponsorship outside of the travel business.

how to find a sponsor

We could approach cell phone and satellite companies, we found GPS and Audio Sponsors and of course we found the most important sponsor for our car in AllWAysRentals. A Rental company base in Christchurch New Zealand that offers campervans and cars for hire .

6. Involve a Charity

It is fulfilling to give back when traveling through communities so involving at any time during your travels is a great idea. When you decide to take on an epic adventure and are seeking specific sponsorship having a charity on board helps.

how to get a sponsor

Many companies are already involved with a charity, so it may be worthwhile to approach your premium sponsors first and offer to raise money for their specific charity in return for the largest premium spot.

Intrepid Travel also donated our carbon offsets for the fuel that we used driving from England to Mongolia.

7. Start Early

Companies plan their year in advance and the sooner you can seek sponsorship the better.

We waited far too long for the Mongol Rally to attract a Gold Sponsor. We originally wanted 1 main sponsor. They would be an exclusive sponsor that would receive all of the publicity throughout the Mongol Rally.

how to find sponsorship for an event start early

We wanted to ask for a large monetary value that would cover all costs in return for exclusive sponsorship. This is something that you should start seeking at least a year in advance. By the time we got around to approaching companies in January, although they were interested, they already had their advertising budgets allotted for the year.

8. Just Ask

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from Andy Hayes when trying to figure out how to get something. His reply was “Have you Ever Thought to Ask? Great advice!

Our biggest fear was sending that first email. We didn’t know what people would say and how they would respond. Once we got over the fear of rejection, we started approaching companies that we would never have had the nerve to speak to before. Companies will say no that is a fact.

find a sponsor for an event

But you will be amazed at how many people will respond with a polite letter explaining why they can’t sponsor you at this time. Thank them for their time and keep them in your database for future reference. As your statistics grow and if the right opportunity comes along for partnership, you can try them again.

Once you receive that first acceptance letter, you will be filled with confidence and ready to approach more people.

9. Fulfill Your Commitments

Don’t offer what you can’t follow through on. We found it difficult to tweet and facebook from the desert in Kazakhstan and Mongolia but we found ways to fulfill our commitments to our sponsors.

sponsorship guide social media

We hired Social Media Atlantic Canada who were able to take care of our social media commitments when we couldn’t be online. We also scheduled our important tweets in advance to make sure that the word was getting out about our sponsors.

If there was one thing that we did when we pulled into a small town with slow internet, was to get online and make sure that our duties to our sponsors were fulfilled.

10. Follow Up

It is important to keep documentation of the exposure that you are giving your sponsors. We took snapshots of our hashtag #mongolsms and for 3 little bloggers working on their own, we reached over 1.2 million impressions in just 97 tweets.

find a sponsor and follow up

Once you are finished, send your sponsors the posts that you wrote about them during the event and the analytics on how it was received. A great follow will help you continue your relationship beyond just one event. Building relationships is the key. Companies want to work with people they can trust and if you are professional with them during your first business venture, you have a good chance of working with them again.

This is an eye opener. Thank you for the detailed post. I have always wondered the other ways to get content without spending.

This post was very helpful and insightful… and inspiring!

Thank you so much for this blog! . I try to apply this guide now. thanks

I am now considering your list – this is reasonable enough and the most charitable so far.

Hi! This was really so helpful because my twin sister and I are studying in college in India at present and we’re planning this eurorail trip next summer. We are going to start a blog soon and we were thinking about what companies would like to sponsor us. We don’t really know how to go about this but we’re really excited about this trip and are willing to work really hard to make it happen! It would be great to hear from you ! Thanks

Best of luck Mallika. The best advice we can give you is to really sell what you have to offer. You need to make the companies see that you are an asset to them. Just going on an adventure won’t get you sponsorship, you need to show something in return and show them that you are worth the money/product that they will be giving you. Best of luck!

This is really useful, thanks for being so honest. It’s gone into my bookmarks for future reference 🙂

This was great – thanks so much! My sister and I are going to Dubai in March so I think I’ll start with a baby step and see if we can get one sponsored thing to do while we’re there. It’s so nice of you to share this information with those of us who are new.

I”m trying to think of our angle – two middle-aged sisters, one who is a smart ass and one who is well behaved…..maybe I need to think a little longer!

Thanks again!

Good for you Kay. That is exactly how we started out, baby steps. I remember sending that first email and I was so nervous. I like your idea. I’d read about that for sure! Even two sister’s traveling together period is an interesting dynamic and I know you’ll be able to find something there.

thank you for your tip; i m going to knock at doors to . you never know. leaving next february for my europe tour on inline skate. excited and nervous but this cool me down a bit. thanks again.

Great advice, we are not looking for sponsors for a trip but instead companies to sponsor a single page on our site for that particular destination.

We are thinking about offering each page for a year but not too sure how much to charge? What are your thoughts?

This is so cool and very helpful . bookmarked this page

Great tips here!

I’ve been looking for sponsors for the upcoming event on my blog and will apply some of your tips here. It’s just I’m really new in finding some sponsors on my blog.

Cheers! Gay Aida

Superb post Deb n Dave. I love the way your names sound together – sorry, I digress. You demystify the holy grail of surviving on the road nicely. Now we have the lowdown, no one has the excuse not to succeed – a bit scary I think! Thought the guys and gals over at twitter would appreciate your words of wisdom so tweeted it is 🙂

Tanks wellan, we appreciate the tweet! Good luck with your travel blogging and may we all have success together!

Great advice! I have always been wondering how people get sponsorship! It’s good to know you have to start well in advance! I don’t think James and I are at the level to attract lots of money like that, but maybe in a few years.

Thanks so much for being generous to have shared your ideas and experience of sponsorships. There isn’t much blogging on this topic and as travel bloggers it should all be a part of our tool belt. Instead, I just thought it was something only certain bloggers were getting propositioned to do. Thanks so much for decoding the magic veil and hope y’all get more sponsorship in the future!

Glad we could help Christine. While, companies will approach bloggers that are higher profile and receive higher traffic, it is still important to have a package to present to people when you are seeking it yourself. Things just don’t magically happen all the time and when you work at it, you will eventually reach your goals.

You guys have helped so many travel bloggers. You always have so much advice to share and a lot of people are learning from you on a daily basis (myself included). Keep it up and cheers.

Thanks Cole. We feel that anything you want to find out about can be found on the internet. Why not make it easy for our readers so that they can find it here:)

I really can’t thank you guys enough for this post! We’re currently working on getting sponsorship for a couple of different things, most notably, our next women’s travel guidebook to Argentina. This was so clear and so informative! One question though: what program were you using to monitor the reach of your tweets?

Hi Kelly, we use TweetReach and Hashtracker. They are excellent tools to let a company know how far your social media reaches. Cheers and good luck!

What is the URL of Hashtracker?

Hey Victor. It is actually Hashtracking. Here is the URL: http://www.hashtracking.com/ Cheers D&D

Lots of good advice there, mate. I think I’ll stick to my traditional google adsense, though. Our completely different style makes for short visits, and quick answers. Simple google adsense clicks seems more profitable in such a speedy environment.

Great post you guys! This is fantastic information for that day in the future when I’m going after sponsorships. Hopefully soon 🙂

Glad we could help Kit. Good luck with your future sponsorship and you must let us know how it goes. It will help inspire others to know that they can do it too!

Thank You for the tips. I just started my travel blog and need information help.

Good luck with the new blog Victor. It is a lot of fun being a travel blogger. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Thanks, as always, for your sound advice!

Thank you NLM, glad that you could find it useful.

Hey guys, Thanks for the post. I got into blogging into a way of extending my travels. I had in mind something related to sponsorship but I wasn’t sure how to proceed. Now, I have a clear idea on what to do. Perfect!!!

Glad we could help Ruth! Good luck and happy travels.

Thanks for this — really appreciate your transparency AND generosity. And the timing is good too, as I am just now beginning to seek sponsors for a big trip I am planning next year.

And I completely agree about the “just ask” philosophy!

You are welcome Mariellen. Good luck with your sponsorship proposal and hopefully this post helped you out a bit. Cheers!

Great transparent post guys! Thanks for that. I’ve just done well selling local sponsorships for my Meet Plan Go event…I should figure out some packages now for LLworldtour! You are right…having a ‘hook’ or special ‘thing/trip/event’ helps it be more packageable/sellable. Now, more importantly, WHEN am I going to get to meet you cool people?! 🙂 Lisa

Hi Lisa, we are so glad that you had success for Meet Plan Go. It is these types of events that help you to learn and get started. Once you have landed some sponsorship, it is easier the next time out. I know that you will have great luck with LL World Tour! And yes, I hope we meet soon:)

Great advice guys! Thanks for sharing such valuable info. We are working on some sponsorship stuff now. It is exciting and definitely the way in which blogging is heading. As you said it is scary, but you just have to jump in there. We always say, If you don’t ask then the answer is always no. EAch no is one step closer to a yes and we can learn from each no to help get us to that yes.

Hi Caz, you and Craig have already done so well and I agree, Sponsorship is the way that blogging is heading. As travel bloggers we have such a great industry and the possibilities are endless. I love your quote, If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. As scary as it is to ask, it is always better to get a no than to not ask at all.

Thanks so much for sharing the details of your sponsorship package. We are getting very close to launching our product and this is going to be very helpful if we decide to approach sponsors.

Hi Christy, I can’t wait to hear what your new product is. Good luck with approaching sponsors, I am sure that you wil have great success!

Amazing article! I’m not a blogger, but his is still great info for anyone running a website.

Thanks Sogo Travel. You are right, anyone can follow these steps to help gain sponsorship for their own events.

Thanks for the tips. I’ve done this for events & charities, but never (yet) for myself… 🙂

That is awesome Rachel. Have you done anything differently for events? Or have you found your experiences to be similar.

Thanks for the tips and advice guys! It is generous of you to share how to manage such a large piece of the business side of blogging. This will come in handy in the next couple of weeks as I take my first small steps into the world of sponsorship and trying to partner with companies large and small. Thank you!!

Hi Gillian, good luck with seeking your sponsorship. It can be a daunting task shifting to the business side of travel blogging. We are all writers and photographers, but learning how to run a business is a whole new ballgame.

Thanks so much for writing this! I have an idea for something just like this and might want to approach Honda and/or Amtrak. Now I know what I’d need to do. Your information is great. Very smart, by the way, to have someone handling social media when you couldn’t.

Good luck with your sponsorship. You have such an amazing product, I know that you can do it. You must let us know how it goes.

Getting Your First Few Travel Sponsorships

Looking for a travel sponsorship? Wondering how bloggers travel the world so much? Want to know how I have travelled to over 25 countries without any permanent source of income? If yes, then this blog is for you!

But first things first … if you are new to this blog let me introduce myself. I am Dev, a full-time travel blogger from New Delhi, India. In 2016, I quit my corporate career in England, moved to India and became a nomad. I’ve been travelling and writing on this blog ever since.

Newspapers like TOI and ET and many others have moreover written about me, featuring my journey as a blogger. Read this page for more . I have travelled to 25+ countries in the last 4 years, with almost all my journeys being sponsored.

If you are wondering who are travel sponsors. They can be anyone in the travel industry: a country tourism board, an airline, a hotel chain, or a tour company.

If you’re looking for more tips on why they provide travel sponsorship, I have written another blog post on how to find travel blogging sponsorships that will set you going on why they sponsor travel bloggers in the first place. This blog will also help you understand a few basics that we are going to skip in this blog.

Here’s another useful resource if you want to know specifically about tourism boards and how to contact them .

Please note that if you are looking for travel sponsorships as a travel writer, especially a blogger, then only this article is going to make sense. If you had another definition in mind, then a few things may sound irrelevant. But nevertheless, there’s no harm in reading.

Now, coming back to the topic at hand…

Travel Sponsorships

When I became a blogger in 2016, all my trips were self-sponsored.

Later, as I became a travel influencer , brands started reaching out to me for promoting them on my channels. And this is how it all began!

I have experiences like flying in business class , doing a solo road trip in Germany , travelling in a  luxury train travel in India , and other such experiences.

I have even earned a Scuba diving certification, learned snowboarding, and tried sky-diving, all without spending a dime.

Getting Travel Sponsorships Takes More Than Just Impressive Numbers On Your Blog!

As I started blogging, (in January 2016) I thought, “if I will keep writing great content, increase my blog readership and gain an impressive number of followers on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, I’m going to succeed. People will notice me, and travel companies will run after me asking if I can promote their brand”. Though I am not claiming that it was an incorrect way of becoming a successful blogger. But it was not entirely correct, either.

In the last few months (precisely speaking, after July 2016) I’ve realised that there’s more to blogging than just getting impressive traffic, or writing great content. I mean you sure want good numbers to for getting travel sponsors (or paid gigs) but if you’re investing all your time in improving the figures, and are not approaching the sponsors on your own — writing at least 10 emails per day — you’re not doing yourself any favour. You’re only losing hope, slowly, every day.

This particularly applies to new bloggers — those who are still taking baby steps in establishing their identity.

If you haven’t started a blog yet and are thinking to start one, here’s a detailed travel blog I have written on How To Start A Travel Blog In India .

How Much Traction Is The ‘Minimum Required Traction’ Before You Can Start Contacting Brands?

Though there is no ideal number, I believe that once you start getting a couple of hundred page views per day on your blog, and have at least over 5 thousand likes on your different social media networks like Facebook and Twitter – you’re ready to approach travel sponsors.

Start Writing To Travel Companies And PR Agencies!

Understand what kind of travelling you’re into. Search for the companies working in your niche (for example motorbiking, adventure travel, backpacking, luxury getaways etc) and start pitching them.

Send them an email introducing yourself and your blog, and how you can help redirect your readers to their website. Be very precise with numbers.

Speaking of how to contact travel sponsors and make sure you get travel sponsorship, here are a few practices…

1. Crafting The Right Email

When I had initially started approaching companies for travel sponsorships, my email often sounded more like a request — having no authority at all. Following a little introduction, I would use sentences like “Since I am travelling in your city next, I was thinking if you’d be interested in working with Footloosedev. Any help (regarding accommodation/activities etc) would be greatly appreciated”.  And the template worked just well. I got around 30 per cent replies to my emails – this makes 3 replies for every 10 emails. Not a bad figure at all.

I think it was because the term “any help” gave the other party the upper hand, from small startups to big companies, and they at least replied. Often, it wasn’t a very beneficial deal, but it didn’t matter. Because initially, it was all about scoring more and more sponsors and building my portfolio.

  • Keep your email short and crisp, and include all additional information.
  • Read: How To Create A Media Kit For A Travel Blog

2. Write More Emails. Contact More Travel Sponsors

Since July, the time I realised I should start pitching sponsors, I have been writing about at least 10 emails per day, when I’m not travelling. Some days I even write over 20 or 30. The point here is, when you’re new in the business, you got to reach out to people, and tell them who you are, and how you can bring value to their business.

I wrote about 50 emails for my Goa and South India trip – I found 5 sponsors (in 2016). I wrote about 50 emails for my Gujarat trip – I found 3 sponsors (in 2017). I’ve written about 50 emails for my upcoming Europe trip – have found 4 sponsors (in 2017).

If it wasn’t for the first email from my side, I would still be travelling without and travel sponsorship. During my 58 days Europe trip, I spent only 70,000 Rupees including my flight and visa costs). How did it happen? Because of travel sponsorships and free travel. Read more about it here: 2 months Europe travel in less than 70,000 Rupees .

3. Contact Tourism Boards

When I had initially started blogging, and found other bloggers working with Tourism Board, I always thought that it will take at least two to three years to persuade a Tourism Board to sponsor my trip. But I was wrong!

It’s true that top travel bloggers always have better prospects than you but working with tourism boards isn’t a tough deal to crack.

The first-ever Tourism board I worked with was Goa Tourism Board, and it was when they were organising an annual blogging event, inviting a group of bloggers from across the world. At the time they were hosting the bloggers’ trip, I luckily ended up writing them an email. And I happened to be lucky. One blogger had to cancel her trip because of some reason and I got a chance.

So yea, keep contacting tourism boards, and you never know if they invite you on a FAM trip as a travel blogger. I have shared a link to my other blog on how to contact tourism boards for travel sponsorships.

Give Blogging Some Time

Last but not least, blogging tests your patience like a slow, uphill journey. So be prepared for it!

Before I started blogging, I found almost 90% of (travel) bloggers claiming that it took them at least ten months before they started getting sponsored trips – while many lost the fight before they even turned 10 months old.

If you look at the industry at the moment, most of the successful travel bloggers out there have been doing it for the past few years – some for as many as 5 or 7 years, or even more.

Travel blogging requires a tremendous amount of work, as well as a tremendous investment of time and effort before you begin to see any benefits.

But on the bright side, remember that the travel industry is the fastest-growing industry in the world. No automobile, no banking, no retail industry is growing as faster. There are hundreds and thousands of travel startups entering every day – looking for new and cheaper means of marketing. And what could be better than promoting their brand on a website which is delivering its posts to a few thousand people, every month – almost 90% of whom are only interested to know about travel, right? And that’s when travel bloggers come into the picture. We Are Needed! And There’s No Denial To This Fact!

I think you’re absolutely correct with ‘writing emails’. it is very much required for those who are new in the business. making your portfolio and working with more and more clients is the key to successful blogging.

Absolutely Ance. As I said, I initially thought that focusing traction building will only suffice in this game, but I was wrong. You need to take a step forward and contact people on your own.

' src=

Hi Dev, Good tips man! Thanks!

' src=

Great post Dev. I’ve been following your posts for some time now, and being a new travel blogger I’m sure these tips will prove to be super handy for me!

Cheers Vibeke. And thanks for following/reading my posts.

Get Sponsored To Travel

Get Sponsored to Travel

Do you know that you can travel around the world for free? Even better, you can get paid as you travel to your dream destinations. This is possible through the help of travel sponsors.

A travel sponsor can be a company or people who run a business or cause and are willing to sponsor your trip in exchange for promoting their brands.

If you are a travel blogger with an established website with thousands of page views or someone who has many followers on social media, it will not be easy, but a bit easier for you to get sponsors.

Now, getting a travel sponsor may not be difficult but a bit tricky. One important thing you need to remember is that these sponsors are also expecting something in return. And you have to convince them that helping you travel around the world can be beneficial for them.

Why Travel Sponsorship is the Best Way to Travel

Travel sponsorships are popular among travel bloggers, vloggers and social media personalities. We all know that going on a trip around the world requires a significant amount of money. But with travel sponsorships, companies or individuals can help you fulfill your travel goals in exchange for promoting their brand.

A travel sponsorship agreement may allow you to travel the world stress-free. At least from a money perspective. Imagine going places without worrying about how much money you are spending.

Having said that, sponsorship comes with commitments, therefore another type of stress. We’ve detailed that in this article on sponsorship .

We have to admit that these full cash sponsorships are extremely rare, unless you are a well established blogger or influencer.

But once you reach that level you don’t need to save much for the hefty travel fares or accommodation during your trip as there are companies who are willing to spend their money in exchange for you promoting their brand on your blog, article or social posts.

Moreover, in many cases, travel sponsors will also assist with your travel itinerary. Some companies will go as far as getting you booked with exclusive getaway destinations or get your exclusive dining reservations among other perks.

And if you are promoting a brand of travel items, you may get free products as well.

The latter is actually a more frequent type of sponsorship deal than cash sponsorships.

Tips To Get Travel Sponsorships

Make sure to follow these tips so that you can easily land an exciting travel sponsorship with companies that offer general travel sponsorship packages.

1. Be proactive in finding travel sponsorship.

Even if you are a popular blogger or social media personality, you need to be extra proactive to find travel sponsorships especially. This is especially true if you are trying to get your first time to work with travel sponsors.

Use your connections, blog or social media account to announce that you are interested in travel sponsorships. If you know of companies or people who are into the travel niche as you do, reach out to them. Check also with other travel bloggers if they have some recommendations.

2. Before you reach out to your prospect sponsors, work on making your travel blog or social media account stand out.

Before you start finding a travel sponsor or sponsors to help you travel the world for free, you should first work on improving your travel blog if you are a blogger or work on getting more active followers if you are into social media platforms. That way, you can easily convince your sponsors that you can indeed promote their brands.

3. Think of a travel project that will entice companies or sponsors to let you promote their brands as you travel.

You will have a high chance of getting sponsorship for your trip if you also have a good travel project in mind that will give companies an opportunity to promote their brands. Merely saying that you wished to travel the world won’t get you a paid or sponsored trip even if you are the most popular blogger.

Make your travel project stand out by making it more personal and specific. One example of a good travel project will be “To conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro in 5 days to help me overcome my fear of heights.”

4. Prepare an enticing pitch.

Once you have a list of your potential sponsors, call or email them and tell them about your travel plans and how you can promote their brands through it, in an enticing pitch.

In your pitch, be sure to also include information about the traffic you are getting in your blog site or social media posts so they’ll know how many people they could possibly reach if they will sponsor your trip.

5. Don’t give up easily.

Some companies will give you an outright no for an answer while others may say that they will think about it.

Getting travel sponsorships can be challenging if it is your first time in this kind of travel arrangement. But don’t give up yet as you will never know if the next person or company you are calling or sending an email to might give you a positive response.

Q: Can I get a company to sponsor my trip even though I am not a travel blogger?

Yes, it is possible to get companies or people to work with you on a paid or sponsored trip even though you are not a travel blogger. You can also easily get sponsorship if you have a strong following on social media or if you have a popular vlog site.

Q: What is the best way to contact potential sponsors, is it through email or call?

If you have both the email address and contact number of your prospect sponsors, you have nothing to lose if you do both. However, if it is your initial conversation, it is always good to consider calling first. Calling a sponsor can help you build rapport easily. But regardless of which method you use, you should always be ready with your media kit and pitch.

Q: Aside from promoting the brand, is there anything else that I need to do for my sponsor?

In a sponsorship contract, it will tell you the things that you need to do to get paid or sponsored for your trip. Make sure that you comply with what you initially agreed upon in your contract.

Q: Are there any drawbacks to sponsored trips?

A paid or sponsored trip has some drawbacks that you need to know.  For one, you need to commit part of your travel time to promote a brand or brands if you have multiple sponsors.

In some cases, your sponsors may require you to bring their products to your trip so you can blog about them. And this could mean having extra baggage when you want to travel light. It also comes with commitments and with more rigid plans, blog or social media posts.

Q: Are there any other alternatives?

Yes. A great alternative would be to make money on the road. There are countless opportunities to earn the cost of your flights and accommodation from being a virtual assistant to running your own online agency. The number of options to make money while traveling are endless.

overlandsite hiking in thailand

If it is your first time to hear about travel sponsorship, think of it as a good opportunity for you to take that much-needed vacation, and travel the world stress-free.

The first thing you need to do is find prospect sponsors, get their contact information, and reach out to them via call or email. You can then follow the rest of the tips we mentioned about how to get a travel sponsorship .

Overall, think of travel sponsorship as a win-win arrangement between you as a travel blogger and a company that wants to promote its brand. You may have a bit of freedom to lose, but if you compare it to the scenario where you wouldn’t be able to afford travel at all, it’s a great solution.

The Truth About Becoming an Independent Travel Agent

Travel Quest Network logo

Travel Quest Network

It’s scary taking the first leap into the depth of self-employment without any clue on where to go from there.

The good news is, you’re off to a solid start.

You did the hard part: you decided to embark on a new career path.

Now, dig up that list of requirements for your “ideal job,” and it might read a little something like this:

  • Flexible schedule
  • Long-term career
  • Helps people
  • Comfortable
  •  No cubicle!
  • Supportive network
  • Awesome travel benefits

This sounded crazy when you started writing it, but now, you realize this is actually achievable. These traits are basically a mirror image of the benefits you’d have in a career as an independent travel agent.

So how do you turn this dream into a reality?

It’s a challenge trying to sift through all the advice out there to find clear instructions on how to become an independent travel agent. That’s why we’ve filtered through the resources to provide you with the truth, challenges and all, so that you can take your next steps.

What is an Independent Travel Agent?

Independent travel agent standing in front of a world map with TQ logo

The perks of being your own boss are quick to entice, but before you start ordering your business cards, it’s important to understand the basics. We’ll start with one of the most important questions:

What is an independent travel agent?

If you break down the job title word-for-word, you can easily get a sense of what your role as an independent travel agent will be.

“Independent” refers to being self-employed. You are your own boss, akin to a contracted worker, and therefore are not technically an employee of any other agency.

Obviously, you work in the field of travel, creating customized itineraries for trips by offering the best recommendations for every aspect along the way. Travel agents can narrow the scope of this definition by specializing in a niche, like honeymoons, luxury, family, adventure, European, or multigenerational vacations.

As an agent, you are a trusted resource from which clients learn about travel and travel services. It is your responsibility to build relationships with suppliers around the world so that you can offer their services. Of course, a love of travel is a necessary passion to become an independent travel agent, but it will not be your defining feature.

More than anything, an independent travel agent is a salesperson. You will be working off of commission after all.

However, because travel is an intimate and expensive endeavor, your purpose will not be to get your clients to book as quickly as possible.

Instead, you have to provide them with all of the tools at your disposal to plan the best trip possible.

Are You Ready to Become an Independent Travel Agent?

One of the great things about becoming an independent travel agent is that it can be done from anywhere. That being said, it takes more than giving yourself the title to succeed.

As an independent travel agent, your clients rely on your experience and advisement.

Don’t worry, there is no need to start counting all of the stamps in your passport. While it is helpful to be well-traveled, it is more important that your travel knowledge is driven by your passion for it.

3 Major Benefits of Becoming an Independent Travel Agent

One word:  Independence .

It is something everyone craves in their career, but few are able to experience completely while working as an employee.

As a contracted worker you have complete control over when, where, and how you conduct business. Whether you work from home or decide to rent a private office space, it is completely up to you.

You make the rules.

The freedom of being your own boss may have drawn you to learn how to become an independent travel agent. But it is not the only perk of this profession.

Here are a few more benefits that you can take advantage of:

  •  Steady income:  According to Statista, revenue from travel agencies is expected to reach over $17 billion by 2020. There is a large earning potential for independent travel agents since your income is comprised of commission, service fees, and consultation fees. Also, as an at-home agent, you are eligible for tax deductions.
  • Travel perks:  Also known as FAM trips. These “familiarization” trips are provided at reduced rates by suppliers. The purpose is to use the trip as a learning tool to understand the supplier’s services and products. In addition, FAM trips will give you the firsthand knowledge to pass down to your potential clients and a chance to learn the tricks of the trade.
  • Travel discounts : Travel agents also enjoy a wealth of discounts from hotel stays to renting a car. One way to start generating discounts is to legitimize yourself with an IATA card.

Among the tangible benefits, becoming an independent travel agent is also a fulfilling career choice. People are choosing you to plan one of the best experiences of their lives, and that is rewarding.

The True Challenges of Becoming an Independent Travel Agent

Be forewarned, though the benefits heavily tip the scale in one direction, there are challenges to becoming an independent travel agent just like any other profession.

One of the main hurdles is the investment of time and money you must make when starting out. There are start-up costs, host agency fees, and other upgrades you may need to consider.

As a contractor, you do not receive traditional employee benefits. The payment structure for independent travel agents may take time to get used to as well. It is commissioned-based, and often, those commissions are not paid to you until after your client returns from their trip.

It takes time to build your business.

Becoming an independent travel agent is a long-term endeavor, and if you are willing to put in the time, it can be your career for life.

What Becoming an Independent Travel Agent is All About

Independence does not mean that you are alone.

One of the common misconceptions about this career choice is that you will have no support.

However, the role of an independent travel agent is defined by their relationships. Relationships with your clients, suppliers, and most importantly your host agency, are all essential components of your success.

Client Relationship

You can think of your role as an independent travel agent more like a consultant. Your clients, both new and returning, will rely on the recommendations you give them when planning their soon-to-be cherished experiences.

This relationship requires a large amount of trust, understanding, and openness. On your part, it is also about listening and reading people to provide them with experiences they will love. Fostering these relationships are what will secure your business.

Supplier Relationship

The largest portion of your income will derive from booking with suppliers. Remember the FAM trips you took advantage of? More than anything, those trips are learning experiences.

Suppliers and independent agents work together to compile the perfect trip for each client. As an independent travel agent, it is up to you to understand what type of vacation packages you are offering so you can advise based on true experience.

Agent-supplier relationships are beneficial to everyone.

You will have first-hand knowledge to pass down to each client so that together, you can plan the best experience possible. Plus, the more clients you send, the more both you and the supplier financially benefit.

Host Agency Relationship

In your quest to become an independent travel agent, finding the right host agency is like finding the North Star. The right agency will work with you, guiding you through the challenges, and creating a clear path for success.

Host agencies are a key partner to help you become a successful independent travel agent. They help legitimize you as an agent, especially early on, and provide access to resources and their established network.

Host agencies can also provide marketing and promotional materials, training, recording keeping, and support along the way.

How to Build the Perfect Travel Agent/Host Agency Relationship

Now that you know the truth about becoming an independent travel agent, it’s time to take the first step: finding the right host agency.

While the importance of a fair commission should not be downplayed, it is vital to factor in other characteristics of your potential host agency that are just as important.

Not all host agencies are created equal.

They vary greatly in their size, benefits, and dedication to their agents. When researching the best agency for you, it is important to ask yourself:

  • What size agency do I want to work with?
  • Do they offer training?
  • Are there marketing opportunities?
  • What is the agent/agency relationship like?

Everyone has different goals. That’s why when you’re starting out as an independent travel agent, your goals should align with the agency you choose. When Travel Quest Network began hosting agents in 1998, they made sure that working closely with their agents to reach a common goal was the focus of their business.

Today, they continue to fulfill that goal by serving over 1,200 agents in the US. Travel Quest Network offers training, technology resources, marketing, and flexible pricing plans that range from 70-100% commission in the agent’s pocket.

So what are you waiting for? Get on board with your dreams and learn more about partnering with Travel Quest Network to become a successful independent travel agent.

Travel Advisers: When to Let a Professional Plan Your Trip

An illustration of a person sitting on a folded-out map with books, papers and coffee laid out around the area. That person is inside the head of a beige-colored person wearing a teal telephone headset, and drawings of the Eiffel Tower, a compass, a signpost, a jet plane, mountains and other travel imagery are all around the head.

By Julie Weed

Decades ago, your vacation most likely began with a visit to a travel agent, who relied on a combination of expertise and connections to find the best deals on plane tickets, hotels, tours and more. Since then, the internet has turned most of us into our own travel agents, and artificial intelligence software is making research and self-booking even easier. But for some trips, that special insider knowledge can still make a big difference.

So when should you hire a professional, and how does it all work? Here are some tips.

Why should I consider a travel adviser?

It’s easy for a traveler to do the research for a standard trip, said Chris Anderson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “so they should look for a specialist for the type of tour they are looking for, say a bike trip in Ireland, who can really add value.”

The insider knowledge offered by a travel adviser can add the most value to trips that have multicity itineraries, involve a wide age range of travelers , are very significant (like an anniversary vacation) or are to destinations you are unfamiliar with, said Gary R. Johnson, who has run the travel agency Woodside Travel in Seattle for nearly 30 years. An adviser could help you decide, for instance, in which order to visit European cities based on local events and transportation options.

What can an adviser give me that a booking site can’t?

Travel advisers can help you research the best destinations, lodging, or activities for your particular group and travel goals, offering up specific advice that might be hard or time-consuming to find yourself. Those specializing in cruises might know which cabin to choose if you are prone to seasickness, while a safari planner could help you decide which park would be best for bird-watching or seeing specific animals, like rhinos.

Travel advisers typically have relationships with tour companies, hotels and cruise lines, sometimes through networks. Those connections can allow advisers to offer extra perks such as late checkout, free breakfast, airport transfers, a welcome basket or a credit to spend on a cruise ship.

“A good travel agent will be a better steward of your travel budget than you are,” said Guy Rubin, managing director of Imperial Tours , which arranges travel in China.

When bad weather or other circumstances disrupt your itinerary, travel advisers often have direct lines of communication with providers and can do the work of rebooking and changing plans, saving you time and stress.

OK, let’s say I need help. How do I find an adviser?

Networks like the American Society of Travel Advisors and Travel Leaders have websites that can help you start your search for a travel adviser by answering a few questions about your desired trip. Once you have a handful to choose from, get on the phone with them to talk about what they might do for you, how they charge and the level of service you can expect. Special trips can cost thousands of dollars, so it’s worth investing time up front, Mr. Rubin said.

Make sure to read over the travel agent’s reviews and any user-generated social content that mentions them, Dr. Anderson said. “If there is no external validation, that’s a red flag.”

How do advisers get paid, and how much will it cost me?

Advisers receive commission from suppliers, typically 10 to 15 percent of the price, when selling cruises, lodging and tours. They also sometimes charge travelers a planning fee, from a few hundred dollars, which may be credited to the final bill if the booking is completed, all the way up to tens of thousands of dollars annually for a luxury concierge travel planner they can call on all year. Mr. Johnson said that he charges a planning fee the first time he works with customers. If they return for other trips, he waives the fee.

Advisers may be tempted to sell you something that will earn them a higher commission, Dr. Anderson said. But, he points out, the same is true for the large online services, which promote hotels that pay them larger commissions. Travelers can ask advisers about specific commissions they receive or how they are affiliated with the products they are recommending, he said.

Sometimes a local tour company will package transportation, lodging and experiences for an adviser, who tacks on a percentage before passing it along to a client. But a bill that is not itemized can make it harder to make trade-offs — between a more expensive hotel and a special experience, for example. If pricing transparency is important to you, discuss it with the adviser up front.

How are A.I. and other technologies affecting travel advisers?

While new technologies are allowing do-it-yourselfers to create their own itineraries online based on individual preferences, and to type questions directly into travel websites, advisers are also taking advantage of those technologies to improve their services. Joan Roca, chief executive of the upscale travel planning company Essentialist said his team “uses technology to enhance the human touch,” employing artificial intelligence to choose options from a database of travel offerings selected by a human team. If a couple wants to take an after-dinner stroll, for example, Essentialist’s app will offer up ideas of where to go, based on what part of the city the travelers are in and conversations they’ve had with their travel adviser.

Romania :  Timisoara  may be the most noteworthy city you’ve probably never heard of , offering just enough for visitors to fill two or three days.

India: A writer fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Darjeeling, in the Himalayan foothills , taking in the tea gardens and riding a train through the hills.

The Top PR Firms in Luxury Travel

The best travel PR pros know better than to merely slice through the noise of trends that are as fleeting as a summer fling. It’s all about turning those micro-awe moments into unforgettable memories that redefine the story.

sponsors travel agencies

As the first true post-pandemic travel year ended, Design Hotels, an oracle of boutique hospitality trendsetting, dropped its inaugural tome analyzing it all: the Further Forecast . The 158-page report, made in collaboration with SOON Future Studies, peers into the soul of 2024's travel and culture vibe from the heady realms of healing escapes to the buzz of micro-awakenings and the psychedelic renaissance of therapy. Yet, this crystal ball doesn’t just gaze into the esoteric—it also zeros in on the everyday traveler's quandaries: the fast versus slow life paradox fueled by A.I., and a crash course in neuroaesthetics (because apparently, designing with emotion in mind is the next frontier). While the uninitiated might find it a bit much, this report is practically a treasure map for media specialists eager to whip up the next big wave in travel. And as Boeing continues to navigate its public relations Bermuda Triangle, the rest of us have a year's worth of successes to toast to—and an electrifying horizon to explore.

Public relations pros in the hotel and travel realms are already spellcasting to align with these revelations. Take the "ecology urgency" tsunami—travel's latest green wave—exemplified by GO PR 's unveiling of New Haven’s Breuer-designed Hotel Marcel , the first zero-emissions hotel in the U.S., which achieved over 11 billion impressions, not only catapulting the hotel into the spotlight but also flaunting PR's alchemy in spinning green dreams into headline gold. Founder Gizem Ozcelik ’s savvy, all-women ensemble didn't stop there, also conjuring up the Astrology Dinner Series at Society Cafe in The Walker Hotel Greenwich Village , a cosmic cure to the so-called "loneliness recession" of our times. Over at Meg Connolly Communications , the Fifth Avenue Hotel bash, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and a champagne cascade, amplified our thirst for closeness, luxury, and the elusive members-only aura we're all after. Meanwhile, Perowne International threw a gargantuan extravaganza for the nearly $2 billion makeover of the Raffles London at The OWO , redefining the art of grand openings. Not to be outdone, their Lake Como gem, Passalacqua , clinched the top spot at the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels Awards , proving their Midas touch isn't limited to just throwing lavish parties.

As cozy as the post-Covid reunion tour of 2023 felt, the digital realm threw us a curveball with the ubiquity of A.I., which gave the travelverse a whole new makeover—and it’s not going anywhere. Behemoth OTA Expedia's flirt with ChatGPT even began dishing out customized travel advice, certainly just the appetizer in the banquet of A.I.'s future in our holiday plans. PR firms are riding this digital wave, flaunting their clients as the trailblazing builders of a tech-savvy hospitality world. But of course, the best of the best PR pros know better than to merely slice through the noise of trends that are as fleeting as a summer fling. It's all about turning those micro-awe moments into unforgettable memories that redefine the story.

The Top Luxury Travel PR Firms in 2024

August 28 studio, meg connolly communications, perowne international .

  • Anne-Cécile & Kimberley Blanchot , Co-Founders/CEOs

In 2018, sisters Anne-Cécile Blanchot and Kimberley Blanchot launched August 28, a storytelling powerhouse straddling New York City and Paris that blends bilingual charm with bicultural bravado, becoming the go-to for brands seeking that transatlantic sparkle. “No U.S. agency within our competitive set boasts a French presence quite like ours,” Anne-Cécile Blanchot tells Observer. “While many have established bases in the U.K., the distinct cultural nuances and work ethic in France set it apart. Recognizing and aligning with these differences is crucial for us to effectively serve our French and European clients.” Their portfolio is replete with triumphs, like La Compagnie, the all-business-class airline that defied skeptics and soared with August 28's inventive tactics. They transformed the airline into a haven of creativity with a "Blue Friday" promo that raked in over 380 million impressions and bagged over $2 million in ticket sales. Then there's The Plaza, New York's iconic gem. August 28 crafted a media strategy for the "Defying Gravi-Tea" afternoon tea that was so magical that it not only toasted Wicked 's 20-year Broadway run but also cast a spell over the holiday season, bagging a whopping 1.7 billion impressions. Across the pond in Paris, they've made newcomer SO/ Paris the belle of the ball, thrusting it into the limelight during Paris Fashion Week 2023 with sky-high occupancy from English-speaking markets. As for the future, they're considering AI with a twinkle in their eye, ready to infuse their campaigns with a tech-savvy touch that still carries unmistakable French finesse. Bien joué, sisters, bien joué.

  • Gizem Ozcelik , Founder

In just three whirlwind years, industry maven Gizem Ozcelik has catapulted GO PR to the pinnacle of innovation. Exhibit A: the launch of Hotel Marcel, the first net-zero emissions hotel in the U.S., which snagged over 11 billion impressions across a spectrum of media realms, from travel to business. This project, alongside collaborations with eco-conscious locales like Tourisme Montréal and Visit Faroe Islands, showcases GO PR's green streak. The agency's knack for fresh, buzzworthy campaigns sparkled in 2023 with the hotly anticipated revival of Dawn Ranch near Sonoma (racking up a whopping 693 million impressions in six months), and the monthly themed—not to mention sold-out—Astrology Dinners at Society Cafe in The Walker Hotel Greenwich Village. According to Ozcelik, it’s about looking beyond traditional hospitality PR goals. “We urge clients to pursue creative programming and partnerships that aim to make them a cultural hub in their communities,” she tells Observer. From brewing up a lasagna-flavored beer collab with Don Angie and Talea to maintaining a stellar client stickiness, exemplified by their work with Bridgeton, GO PR has proven itself as more than just an agency—it's the secret ingredient in its clients' success recipes. GO PR's blend of innovation, retention and flair is set to keep the agency on its upward trajectory, leaving a trail of dazzled clients and awestruck audiences in its wake.

  • Gabriele & Andreas Sappok , Co-Owners

In 2006, Gabriele Sappok launched Imagine PR , and in 2014, her partner-in-crime (and life), Andreas, came aboard as managing partner, adding his personal style to the mix. With a crew as sharp as their passports are stamped, they've transformed their portfolio into a global treasure map of luxury and experiential travel campaigns. Their magic touch turned Tswalu, South Africa's vast private game reserve, into a star, landing the March 2024 cover story on U.K. Condé Nast Traveller despite a drought of visuals. The pair's collaboration with Quasar Expeditions charted a course to a five-page feature in Travel + Leisure 's November 2023 issue, cementing Quasar's reputation as a sustainable travel titan in the Galapagos. In a world where SEO reigns supreme, Imagine PR has seamlessly blended digital savvy with classic PR flair. Their campaign for ThirdHome, inspired by the 2023 Met Gala's Karl Lagerfeld theme, not only caught the media's eye but also skyrocketed the company's search engine ranking, highlighting a property once visited by Lagerfeld himself. “As the influence of SEO and algorithms on travel content grows, we've adapted our tactics to reflect this marriage of PR and SEO effectively," Gabriele Sappok tells Observer. "Because what good is fame if nobody can find you for what you do? And what good is being found if nobody trusts your brand name?” With 35 percent of their clients sticking around for over a decade, including 17 years with Singita and 14 with Natural Selection, the Sappoks have proven they're in it for the long haul. Their secret? A dash of imagination and a whole lot of spades.

  • Meg Connolly , Founder

Meg Connolly's knack for making a splash is practically in her genes, and this year, she's added a dash of champagne to the mix. Take the grand opening of The Fifth Avenue Hotel, a campaign bubbling over with the effervescence of a freshly popped bottle of Dom Pérignon. This launch has already become a PR legend, marked by MCC's genius: a multi-layered press campaign that kicked off during Fashion Week with Oscar de la Renta's showcase in collaboration with Moda Operandi. This was just the appetizer for a media feast that devoured the A-list pages of WSJ Magazine and Architectural Digest . The icing on the cake? Sarah Jessica Parker's bubbly endorsement, a champagne waterfall that spilled over into coverage from Vogue to W Magazine . With Slater Gillin, their veteran SVP & Creative Director, at the helm, MCC boasts a retention record that's the envy of the industry, with Maybourne Hospitality (which includes iconic British properties like Claridge’s and the Connaught) in their fold since day one, a bond that's lasted over a decade. This kin-over-contract approach has drawn others into MCC's gravitational pull, including their latest triumph. “We recently began working with Meadowood Napa Valley,” Connolly tells Observer, “a client that has been on our vision board since the agency was launched 17 years ago.” Looking to the future, MCC is poised to broaden its ultra-luxury brand galaxy, with aspirations that glitter like a perfectly cut diamond, ensuring every campaign is a toast-worthy extravaganza.

  • Jules Perowne , Founder/CEO

In a world obsessed with the biggest and the glossiest, Jules Perowne begs to differ, leaning on word-of-mouth fame that luxury hospitality brands dream of. Her secret weapon? A pinch of wanderlust. Perowne’s team are globe-trotters by trade, embracing the ethos that to understand truly, one must see. This approach keeps them perfectly tuned to the desires of the world's most lavish travelers. The results speak for themselves: Raffles London, a $1.7 billion extravaganza with nine restaurants, three bars and hotel suites named after iconic figures like Winston Churchill. Not to mention their Lake Como treasure, Passalacqua, snagging the top spot at the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels Awards.  With long-standing clients like the Oetker Collection and the 750-year-old Hotel de L'Europe, plus exciting new additions like the 20-year-strong JK Place and its soon-to-open Milan property, Perowne's portfolio is more dazzling than ever. They're also teaming up with Borgo Santo Pietro in Tuscany, Canaves in Santorini and the trailblazing Auric Road in the U.S., adding more stars to their already glittering sky. Perowne's mantra? Back to basics. She's slicing through the noise, not just riding trends but creating them. "I'm constantly on the move—I think last year alone, I hit 82 flights,” Perowne quips. “It's during these travels that I sense the trends. My approach? I trust my gut. And I always say to my team, 'Cut the crap. What's the story? What's the headline? Is it genuine? Is it relevant?' Now, more than ever, those words—relevant, real—are absolutely critical." For Perowne’s clients, expect to be handed the tools to deftly carve your own niche in the luxury universe and thrive.

‘Pretty dodgy’: alarm over suspect care agencies granted Home Office licence to act as visa sponsors

Campaigners against labour exploitation urge government to conduct more stringent checks before awarding powers

Hundreds of newly-established care providers have been granted licences by the Home Office to sponsor workers from abroad despite having no track record of providing services in Britain, the Observer can reveal.

Suspected bogus companies with copy-and-paste websites, fake-looking reviews and PO boxes as addresses are among those granted licences allowing them to sponsor workers to come to the UK.

Sponsor licences have been granted to newly formed firms that have never filed company accounts and are only a few months old. At least 268 companies that have never been inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) have also been granted licences. Others appear to have been granted licences by the Home Office despite not being registered with the watchdog at all.

The findings come in the wake of a damning report by the former independent chief inspector of borders and immigration, David Neal , into the Home Office’s handling of the social care visa route.

In an unpublished report leaked to the Times last month, Neal found that lax oversight was leading to egregious abuses of the sponsor licence system, including one case where the Home Office issued 275 visas to a care home that didn’t exist.

In another case, the Home Office gave 1,234 visas to a company that stated it had only four staff when given a licence to operate. Neal, who was sacked after a dispute with the department, also found that the Home Office had only one compliance officer for every 1,600 employers licensed to sponsor migrant workers. An Observer analysis of firms granted sponsor licences suggests failures in basic vetting checks are widespread.

In one case, a domiciliary care agency was incorporated in the UK in January 2023, registered with the CQC in May and granted a sponsor licence in July. It has never been inspected by the CQC, does not appear to have a proven track record in providing care, and lists a communal office as its address. Its website also includes signs it may not be legitimate, including reviews from clients called “Jane Smith” and “John Doe”.

Another company was granted a sponsor licence despite its online profiles stating it is a health and social care recruitment agency. The firm, which says it offers services including “CV preparation”, “interview skills coaching” and “assistance with work permits/visas”, was granted a licence, despite Home Office rules saying employment agencies are not eligible to sponsor healthcare workers.

In another case, a newly incorporated company granted a licence two months after registering with the CQC misspelt the town where it is based as “Doncascter” in its application to the Home Office, but was granted a licence anyway. Records show the firm has never been inspected and its filings are overdue.

Immigration experts and charities said the cases were proof that lax oversight of the sponsor licence system was leading to bogus providers being given approval to recruit internationally, some of which have gone on to scam and exploit workers, including charging thousands of pounds to provide UK visa sponsorship.

The government’s top immigration adviser, Prof Brian Bell, said: “Some of these firms that are setting up are not providing care at all. They are setting up, getting visas from the Home Office and then selling them.” Bell, chair of the Migration Advisory Committee, said he had seen evidence of firms that were setting up and then “immediately applying for a sponsor licence”, and said it seemed “pretty dodgy”.

He added: “There is a big question to be asked. If you’re setting yourself up and the main reason you’re doing that is so you can become a sponsor, is that what we want? Even if they’re providing care and it’s not completely fraudulent, why is it a good idea to let companies set up with the sole purpose of recruiting internationally?”

Head and shoulders shot of David Neal in a suit

Adis Sehic, senior policy officer at the Work Rights Centre, said: “These findings appear to validate our long-held concerns that the Home Office’s due diligence activities when granting sponsor licences to employers, particularly in the care sector, are woefully inadequate.”

The Home Office said it was strengthening oversight of the sponsor licence system in the care sector to address “significant concerns about high levels of non-compliance, worker exploitation and abuse”.

Under rules coming into effect this month, providers in England will only be able to sponsor migrant workers if they are registered with the CQC . Data published last week also shows there has also been an increase in government crackdowns on bad employers holding sponsorship licences. In 2023, the Home Office revoked 337 licences and suspended a further 569, up from 331 suspensions and 273 revocations the year before.

But that level is far below what it was between 2014 and 2017, according to Home Office data published last week. The number of companies with the power to sponsor skilled workers has more than doubled in the past two years, from 41,621 at the start of 2022 to 84,730 last year, driven by a surge in overseas recruitment of care workers.

Campaigners are calling for improved minimum standards for visa sponsors, including a requirement for providers to be operating for at least two years before being allowed licences, and a requirement for them to have been inspected recently by the CQC. They say it is not enough for firms to simply be registered with the CQC, because newly registered providers are not always inspected straight away.

They also criticised a government plan to scrap the need for sponsors to apply to renew their licences, which will come into effect next month. Sehic said: “This removes a further layer of administrative accountability, leaving the door open for bogus companies to continue sponsoring, scamming and exploiting migrant workers indefinitely.”

More than 350,000 health and care worker visas were issued to main applicants and their dependants in 2023, almost twice the figure for 2022. Reports of exploitation in the care sector have also soared, with more than 10 times as many potential victims in 2022 as in 2021, according to the charity Unseen UK. Cases include workers being trapped by “repayment clauses” , given false promises , forced to live in squalor, and charged illegal recruitment fees .

In a report sent to the home secretary in December, Focus on Labour Exploitation, an anti-trafficking charity, warned that an emerging trend for “rogue businesses … set up to make profits from recruitment fees”, was fuelling abuses in the sector, and accused the government of conducting “insufficient checks” before granting licences. “The gaps in due diligence and lack of regulation [mean] the UK is facilitating exploitative practices,” it said.

The Home Office said: “We strongly condemn offering health-and-care-worker visa-holders employment under false pretences and will continue to revoke licences from those who abuse the system, as we do not tolerate illegal activity in the labour market.”

Padres Broadcast Goes Off on Hilarious Tangent About How Amazing Air Travel Is

  • Author: Dan Gartland

In this story:

San Diego Padres

Mark Grant has been calling  San Diego Padres  games since 1996. Before that, he was a pitcher in the major leagues for eight seasons. So he’s no stranger to baseball road trips. And yet, Grant remains in awe of the fact that you can just hop on an airplane and go play a baseball game in some faraway place.

In the eighth inning of the Padres’ game against the  Los Angeles Dodgers  in Seoul, South Korea, on Thursday, Grant went off on a tangent, telling broadcast partner Don Orsillo just how fascinated he is with the fact that they’ll be back home in San Diego in no time.

“Isn’t it amazing, Donny? [Sideline reporter] Mariluz [Cook] was just in San Diego. We saw Petco Park,” Grant said after the broadcast aired Cook’s report from back home. “We are on the other side of the planet. And after this game, we’re gonna get in a big metal tube and fly for 11 hours and be in San Diego. Isn’t that incredible when you get down to think about it?”

Orsillo’s response was gold: “Yeah, it’s far away!”

The Padres won the game to split the two-game overseas series. They’ll return home and resume regular season games on March 28. Their first road trip of the season is to San Francisco. Grant should have an easier time wrapping his head around that one.

Oil Market Report - March 2024

03 March

About this report

The IEA Oil Market Report (OMR) is one of the world's most authoritative and timely sources of data, forecasts and analysis on the global oil market – including detailed statistics and commentary on oil supply, demand, inventories, prices and refining activity, as well as oil trade for IEA and selected non-IEA countries.

  • Global oil demand is forecast to rise by a higher-than-expected 1.7 mb/d in 1Q24 on an improved outlook for the United States and increased bunkering. While 2024 growth has been revised up by 110 kb/d from last month’s Report, the pace of expansion is on track to slow from 2.3 mb/d in 2023 to 1.3 mb/d, as demand growth returns to its historical trend while efficiency gains and EVs reduce use.
  • World oil production is projected to fall by 870 kb/d in 1Q24 vs 4Q23 due to heavy weather-related shut-ins and new curbs from the OPEC+ bloc. From the second quarter, non-OPEC+ is set to dominate gains after some OPEC+ members announced they would extend extra voluntary cuts to support market stability. Global supply for 2024 is forecast to increase 800 kb/d to 102.9 mb/d, including a downward adjustment to OPEC+ output.
  • Refinery crude runs are forecast to rise from a February-low of 81.4 mb/d to a summer peak of 85.6 mb/d in August. For the year as a whole, throughputs are projected to increase by 1.2 mb/d to average 83.5 mb/d, driven by the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Refining margins improved through mid-February before receding, with the US Midcontinent and Gulf Coast as well as Europe leading the gains.
  • Global observed oil inventories surged by 47.1 mb in February. Offshore stocks dominated gains as seaborne exports reached an all-time high and shipping disruptions through the Red Sea tied up significant volumes of oil on water while onshore inventories declined. Global stocks plunged by 48.1 mb in January, with OECD industry stocks at a 16-month low.
  • ICE Brent futures rose by $2/bbl during February as ongoing Houthi shipping attacks in the Red Sea kept a firm bid under crude prices. With oil tankers taking the longer route around Africa more oil was kept on water, further tightening the Atlantic Basin market and sending crude’s forward price structure deeper into backwardation. At the time of writing, Brent was trading at $83/bbl.

Oil on water

Benchmark crude oil prices were range bound in early March, as the market had already priced in the announced extension of OPEC+ voluntary production cuts through 2Q24. North Sea Dated rose by $2.13/bbl to $84.66/bbl during February as continued tanker attacks in the Red Sea lengthened supply routes and global on-land oil inventories fell for a seventh consecutive month to reach their lowest level since at least 2016.

Global onshore oil stocks fell a further 38 mb last month, taking the draw down since July to 180 mb, according to preliminary data. Over the same period, oil on water surged. Trade dislocations from the rerouting of Russian barrels and more recently due to unrest in the Middle East, have boosted oil on water by 115 mb. In February alone, oil on water surged by 85 mb as repeated tanker attacks in the Red Sea diverted more cargoes around the Cape of Good Hope. At nearly 1.9 billion barrels as of end-February, oil on water hit its second highest level since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trade flow disruptions also boosted bunker fuel use. Longer shipping routes and faster vessel speeds saw Singapore bunkering reach all-time highs. That, along with surging US ethane demand for its petrochemical sector underpins a slight upward revision to our global oil demand expectations for this year by 110 kb/d compared with last month’s Report. World oil demand growth is now forecast at 1.3 mb/d in 2024, down sharply from last year’s 2.3 mb/d expansion.

The slowdown in growth, already apparent in recent data, means that oil consumption reverts towards its historical trend after several years of volatility from the post-pandemic rebound. A weaker economic outlook further tempers oil use, as do efficiency improvements and surging electric vehicle sales. Growth will continue to be heavily skewed towards non-OECD countries, even as China’s dominance gradually fades. The latter’s oil demand growth slows from 1.7 mb/d in 2023 to 620 kb/d in 2024, or from roughly three-quarters to half of the global total, under the gathering weight of a challenging economic environment and slower expansion in its petrochemical sector.

As in 2023, non-OPEC+ oil supply growth will eclipse the oil demand expansion by some margin. Led by the United States, non-OPEC+ production is forecast to rise by 1.6 mb/d in 2024 compared to 2.4 mb/d last year when global oil output climbed by 2 mb/d to 102 mb/d. Substantial gains will also come from Guyana, Brazil and Canada, all forecast to pump at record-highs this year. Together, the non-OPEC+ Americas quartet is set to add 1.3 mb/d of new oil production in 2024.

Iran, which last year ranked as the world’s second largest source of supply growth after the United States, is expected to increase production by a further 280 kb/d this year. Output policy for the remainder of the OPEC+ bloc will be revisited when ministers meet in Vienna on 1 June to review market conditions. In this Report, we are now holding OPEC+ voluntary cuts in place through 2024 – unwinding them only when such a move is confirmed by the producer alliance (see OPEC+ cuts extended). On that basis, our balance for the year shifts from a surplus to a slight deficit, but oil tanks may get some relief as the massive volumes of oil on water reach their final destination.

1. Includes extra voluntary curbs where announced. 2. Capacity levels can be reached within 90 days and sustained for an extended period. 3. Excludes shut in Iranian, Russian crude. 4. Angola left OPEC effective 1 Jan 2024. 5. Iran, Libya, Venezuela exempt from cuts. 6. Mexico excluded from OPEC+ compliance. 7. Bahrain, Brunei, Malaysia, Sudan and South Sudan.
