Actor Tom Cruise's mother, Mary Lee South, remembered on Marco for being "larger than life"

South died in her sleep last week at the age of 80.

To the world, Mary Lee South was Tom Cruise’s mother, but to the residents of Marco Island, she was just plain ole’ Mary Lee, a larger-than-life individual and one of the nicest people you’d ever meet. She died in her sleep last week at the age of 80 .

Mary Lee Pfeiffer was a Louisville, Ky., native who was a teacher when she married Cruise's father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III. The marriage was unhappy and broke up and she remarried, to Cruise's stepfather, Jack South.

The two moved to Marco Island, where they lived together for nearly two decades. During that time South became actively involved in the community, co-founding the Marco Island Film Festival and serving as a minister of the Eucharist for San Marco Catholic Church, where her legacy lived on even after she moved away from the island. She later converted to Scientology,

“I didn’t know Mary Lee personally, she moved right before I joined the church, but I know she was a very active parishioner and was involved in skits and other various church activities,” the Rev. Tim Navin of San Marco Catholic Church said, “and she was an extraordinary Eucharistic minister; she would help bring it to people who couldn’t leave their homes. I know that everyone who did know her were sad when she left the island.”

Nick Campo, owner of Marco Movies and also a co-founder of the film festival, met South through his mother. The two were friends and used to gossip about their sons at the bar of Campo’s family’s restaurant. Soon, Campo and South became friends, too, bonding over their shared love of movies and thriving off of each other’s infectious personalities.

“You see Tom and his charisma and his big personality, and Mary Lee was 10 times that. And that huge smile of his? He got that from her,” said Campo, whose own smile could be heard over the phone. “She was just an amazing, amazing person and truly larger than life”

Campo soon began hosting screenings of Cruise’s movies at his theater, and, in 1998, he and South founded the Marco Island Film Festival, along with Marco Island residents Maury Dailey and Pat Berry, who also has fond memories of South.

“She was a lovely person, that’s all I can really say; she was just absolutely lovely,” Berry said. “She was a very giving person and was on all kinds of committees and boards, and was always raising money for different things. You simply couldn’t find a nicer person.”

To raise money for the film festival during its first year, South auctioned off her son’s famous leather bomber jacket from "Top Gun," a film that Cruise prepared for with the help of another Marco Island resident, Curtis Watson, who took him for a ride in a tactical jet.

But typically, South didn’t like to advertise who her son was, or capitalize on his fame; although she was proud of Cruise’s achievements and was the one who first encouraged him to pursue his Hollywood dreams. The paparazzi would stake out her house anytime there was a “Tom sighting” on the island, Campo said.

“She always wished that the press would leave her alone,” but she did get a kick out of reading stories about Cruise in the tabloids, he said. “Once she read in the National Enquirer that he was sneaking away from his house in Sarasota to come visit her, and she just said, ‘I didn’t even know he had a house in Sarasota!’ ”

Although Campo, Berry and everyone else who knew South have plenty more “Mary Lee stories” that they'll remember for the rest of their lives, what they’ll remember most is her generous spirit, loving nature and kind heart.

“She made everyone feel at home,” Campo said.

“She was light, she was fun and she could keep the good times rolling,” Berry added. “It’s a sad day for everyone who knew her.”

A memorial service at South’s local Church of Scientology took place last weekend. Cruise, 54, was there with his three sisters, Lee Ann DeVette, 57, Cass Mapother, 55, and Marian Henry, 52, along with other family and friends.

‘Warm, charismatic woman’: Tom Cruise’s mother, who inspired him to act, dead at 80

Like many teenagers, Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was lost.

Throughout a tumultuous childhood, which included moving cities several times and an estranged father, sports provided a natural outlet for his pent-up anger, confusion and fear. Then a knee injury in the winter of his senior year of high school ended his burgeoning wrestling career.

That’s when, as People noted , his mom, Mary Lee South, suggested he try out for his Glen Ridge, N.J., high school’s production of “Guys and Dolls.” Heeding his mother’s wisdom, he auditioned and was cast as Nathan Detroit, one of the musical’s major characters.

Weeks later, he had just finished bowing after his first, exhilarating performance. Still warm from bathing in the spotlight, the teenager rushed to his mom and stepfather.

“After the show,” South told Rolling Stone in 1986, “Tom came home and said he wanted to have a talk with my husband and me. He asked for ten years to give show business a try. …  And we both wholeheartedly agreed, because we both felt it was a God-given talent, and he should explore it because he was so enthused about it. So to make a long story short, we gave him our blessing — and the rest is history.”

That history, of course, consisted of Mapother’s move to Hollywood, where he shortened his name to Tom Cruise and became one of the silver screen’s most famous stars. Through all that, he remained close to his mother. He often brought her to movie premieres, and in 2001 The Washington Post’s Reliable Source noted that the two were seen dining at Old Ebbit Grill.

“My mother is a very warm, charismatic woman. Very kind, very generous,” Cruise once told interviewer James Lipton.

South died in her sleep last week, People reported Monday. She was 80 years old.

While that first production was important in Cruise’s development as an actor, perhaps the most important thing he gained from his mother was his tireless work ethic and the virtue of patience. He was 11 years old when his parents divorced, and he wouldn’t see his father again for 10 years, as he told Lipton. Cruise, not yet a teenager, began working to support his mom and three sisters.

“No job was too dirty or difficult for Tommy, as long as it paid money to help his mom out,” neighbor Bill Lewis told Andrew Morton, the author of Cruise’s unauthorized biography .

Meanwhile, his mother took on three part-time jobs, eventually slipping a disk in her back from the stress. “My mom could have sat there every morning and cried and cried,” Cruise said, according to Lewis. “She didn’t. My mom was very proud. She had dignity. She’s going to work hard.”

The family still required federal food stamps to ensure everyone remained fed, certainly a far cry from the dreams of a younger South.

“I was always interested in theater, but I never did anything with it,” South told Rolling Stone. “When I was growing up, if you went to Hollywood, that was really risque. I would have lost my religion, my morals, all those things that young girls thought of back then.”

Cruise seemed to reflect his mother’s interests. “He used to create skits and imitate Donald Duck and Woody Woodpecker and W.C. Fields when he was just a tiny tot. I guess I was his greatest audience,” she said. But he mostly lacked the time to pursue them. He spent the time not dedicated to work and sports with his mother.

“Every night I’d come home, bathe my feet and sit in the family room, and Tom would massage my feet for a half-hour,” South told Rolling Stone. “This went on for six weeks, then Easter came and went, and the Monday after Easter I came home from work expecting the same treatment. And he said, ‘Hey Mom — Lent’s over.'”

Since skyrocketing to fame, Cruise paid his mother back in spades for her sacrifices. As inTouch reported in 2008, he often housed South, his sister Cass and her two children. “He’s very close with his sisters and his mother and he always welcomes his family into his house,” an unnamed source told the magazine.

As for South, she clearly loved seeing her son shine. Thinking back to that first performance, she told Rolling Stone, “I can’t describe the feeling that was there. It was just an incredible experience to see what we felt was a lot of talent coming forth all of a sudden. It had been dormant for so many years — not thought of or talked about or discussed in any way.”

A service, attended by Cruise and his three sisters, was held for South this weekend at her local Church of Scientology.

This former property of Tom Cruise was priced at a hefty $13 million.

2. Beverly Hills Mansion

Constructed in 1937, Tom Cruise owned this mansion for almost a decade. The estate boasts seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Moreover, it offers a sprawling 10,286 square feet of luxurious living space and also comes with it a backyard and a large swimming pool. It also features a tennis court, a children’s playground , and guesthouses. The secluded nature of the mansion offers much privacy away from the limelight. The Hollywood star sold his Beverly Hills mansion for USD 40 million. This was the second home in Los Angeles that he sold in less than a year after he sold his Hollywood Hills estate for USD 11.4 million. Tom Cruise bought the house for USD 32.5 million in 2007 and originally put the house on the market for USD 45 million. 

3. Tom Cruise’s Secluded Ranch, Colorado  

Tom Cruise’s vacation home in Colorado hit the market for $39.5 million in March 2021. The place brags a perfect hiking spot and is fully covered by rolling mountains all around. It has splendid mountain views that are enjoyed from the balcony and the patios of the property. Stretching across a massive 320 acres, Tom cruise bought this Colorado plot in the early 1990s. This 10,000 square feet property boasts vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling fireplaces, and magnificent alpine views. The interiors seamlessly reflect neutral colour tones and have cedar timbers along with native stones. The mansion possesses a large-sized dining space that includes the dining area of both the main and guest house. Called Rede place, Tom Cruise spent $4.2 million on this magnificent country estate in West Sussex. Sprawling over 14 acres of land, the country mansion has an interior area of 11,331-square feet. The property was built in 2003 which likely makes Tom Cruise one of its first owners. Despite its age, what we see here in this property reflects fascinating architectural features. It has a total of eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, divided between the main house and a separate, self-contained guest pavilion. The interior of the mansion is bright and dramatic and seamlessly blends modern state-of-the-art elements and traditional architectural elements. 

The basement level consists of a movie theatre , games room, and dance studio with a sprung floor. There are many living rooms and a light-filled kitchen that opens into a garden. A grand master suite with a private sitting room can be found on the top floor. The mansion lies well protected behind electric security gates and is equipped with CCTV. Other features include manicured gardens, a swimming pool, hot tub, and tennis court.  

5. Tom Cruise’s Clearwater Penthouse, Florida

The penthouse boasts unparalleled views across the city and also possesses a roof deck, a 39-foot infinity pool, solarium, hot tub, and bar. The penthouse features a passageway leading to a secret smaller condo on the second floor that contains a gym, office, and a flight simulator. What is special here is that the penthouse comes with a nine-car parking space and a private car elevator.

Tom Cruise's mother Mary Lee South has died, a rep for the actor confirmed to TODAY.

Our condolences go out to Cruise, 54, and his three sisters, who reportedly attended a memorial service for their mom over the weekend.

South, 80, died peacefully last week in her sleep following health issues, People.com reported . Her memorial service was held at her local Church of Scientology, according to the website.

South is often credited as the person who got her son into the entertainment business in the first place, encouraging him to act in local theater groups and try out for high school plays.

"I guess I was his greatest audience," she told Rolling Stone in a 1986 interview . "He had it in him then."

And throughout Cruise's career, his mom continued to be his biggest fan.

She and her husband thought acting was Cruise's "God-given talent," she told the magazine.

The mother and son maintained a close relationship — South was often spotted on Cruise's arm at red carpet events throughout the 1990s, including the Golden Globe Awards.

Tom Cruise’s mother, Mary Lee South, died last week after battling health issues in recent years, multiple outlets report . She was 80 years old.

Cruise’s publicist confirmed the news to HuffPost. According to People , South died peacefully in her sleep. Cruise and his siblings — Lee Ann DeVette, Cass Mapother, and Marian Henry — reportedly gathered at her local Church of Scientology this weekend for a memorial service with friends and family.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, as Mary Lee Pfeiffer, South once aspired to be an actor much like her son. Instead, she found success as a special education teacher, and married Cruise’s father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III. Recognizing Cruise’s talents at an early age, South encouraged him to pursue acting and participate in local theater productions.

“I guess I was his greatest audience,” she told Rolling Stone in a 1986 profile about Cruise . “He had it in him then. But as he got older, he was more into sports, and it stopped completely.

The couple later divorced in 1974, a period which Cruise once likened to grieving after a death. Four years later, South married Jack South after moving her family to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, where Cruise’s interest in acting reached a turning point. After a celebrated turn in his high school production of “Guys & Dolls,” Cruise was convinced that he was destined for Hollywood.

Throughout Cruise’s career, South was one of her son’s biggest advocates, regularly appearing on his arm at awards shows and movie premieres. Cruise often credited his mom for inspiring him to pursue his acting dreams.

“You know, women have dreams of having careers and being whatever,” she said. “I had a dream of raising children and enjoying them and having a good family life.”

Tom Cruise’s Mother, Mary Lee South, Dies

Mary Lee South, the mother of Tom Cruise , has died, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

South, 80, died peacefully in her sleep last week. South, who coped with health issues in recent years, was given a memorial service at her local Church of Scientology this weekend.

The 54-year-old star and his sisters Lee Ann DeVette, 57, Cass Mapother, 55, and Marian Henry, 52, all attended the memorial along with other family and friends.

Born Mary Lee Pfeiffer, the Louisville, Kentucky, native was a special-education teacher when she wed Cruise’s father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. It was from her that Cruise developed a passion for acting.

“I was always interested in theater, but I never did anything with it,” she told Rolling Stone in 1986. “When I was growing up, if you went to Hollywood, that was really risqué.”

The family lived in Syracuse, New York, where Cruise was born, and Ottawa, Canada. When Cruise was young, his mother encouraged him to participate in a local theater group. “I guess I was his greatest audience,” she said. “He had it in him then.” But Cruise’s love of sports took precedence as he grew up.

Her marriage to Mapother was tumultuous. Cruise told PEOPLE in 2006 that his father was “a bully.” Mary Lee ended the marriage in 1974.

She returned to the United States, and worked a series of jobs to keep her family out of poverty. Cruise helped with money from a paper route. He even massaged his mother’s sore feet after she came home from long days at work.

That close relationship continued when the family relocated to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and Mary Lee wed Jack South in 1978, when Cruise was 16. “He loved my mother so much that he took us all in, all four young people,” Cruise later recalled.

After a knee injury sidelined her son’s varsity wrestling career, Mary Lee encouraged him to try out for a high school production of Guys and Dolls . After the play, Cruise surprised his mother by asking if he could have 10 years to give show business a try. She approved, and with her support, he waited tables in New York City before breaking into the movies.

The close mother-son relationship continued as he became a box-office star.

As for South, she never doubted her son would be a success. When Cruise asked her and her second husband if he could be an actor, “We both wholeheartedly agreed,” she told Rolling Stone . “Because we both felt it was a God-given talent … So to make a long story short, we gave him our blessing — and the rest is history.”

With Cruise reportedly close friends with church leader David Miscavige, a source told the outlet that the movie star was "very relaxed when he's here." 

In addition to occupying the entire top two floors, according to AD, Cruise's pad packs amenities like a roof deck, a nearly 40-foot pool, a bar, and more.What sets the pad apart from other celebrity dig, however, is the passageway that leads to a private, smaller condo on the second floor (which houses a flight simulator, for one). Additionally, there is a nine-car garage and private car elevator (what a cool phrase to say). Now that's  on par with expectations for the "Mission Impossible" star.

Tom Cruise sold his vacation home in Colorado for millions

Although Clearwater, Florida, might be Tom Cruise's personal headquarters, he also owns property in West Sussex, England — for one. Per The Sun , the estate was purchased by Cruise in 2006 for a reported $4.2 million. Bearing the regal title of "Rede Place," the property is located in Dormans Park, East Grinstead, which is reportedly close to the British headquarters of the Church of Scientology. Boasting 14 acres of land and an 11,331-square-foot interior, per insider , the manor was constructed in 2003, meaning Cruise would likely be one of its very first owners.

Cruise parted ways with his longtime 320-acre Telluride, Colo. ranch, which was reportedly a vacation refuge frequented by Cruise with ex-wife Katie Holmes and his children. Putting the ranch on sale for $39.5 million in March, per Forbes , the home sold without a hitch two months later for the asking price . Ardent followers of Cruise's career might remember this was the shooting location for a follow-up to his infamous 2005 interview with Oprah Winfrey , as noted by  Town & Country . However, Cruise's Telluride ranch's main draw, aside from being a ski haven known for its celebrity denizens, is the cozy seclusion it provides for the uber-famous. No wonder it sold so fast!

Actor Tom Cruise, who lost his mother, Mary Lee South, last week, attended her memorial service at her local Church of Scientology.

The Mission: Impossible star’s mother died peacefully in her sleep after battling health issues at the age of 80.

Cruise, 54, was joined by his three sisters, Lee Ann DeVette, 57, Cass Mapother, 55, and Marian Henry, 52, as well as other family and friends, reported People magazine.

South, who split from Tom’s father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, in 1974, was using a walker and looked thinner than usual when she was last seen in Clearwater, Florida in May 2016.

Tom Cruise is waving goodbye to his $39.5 million mansion in Telluride, Colo.

For more than 25 years, the  Top Gun actor  has retreated to his vacation home in Colorado, but this winter the star will be staying elsewhere, as he sold the custom-designed estate this week. According to The Wall Street Journal , the four-bedroom house fetched the full asking price after just two weeks on the market. 

The new buyers will enjoy a spacious 10,000 square foot living space, including the three-bedroom guesthouse located on the 320-acre property. When not snuggled up by the fire, guests can peruse the numerous toys available for their enjoyment, from dirt bikes to snow shoes. There's even a snowmobile track!

Additionally, Cruise had the home outfitted with an office space, a spa and a three-car garage.

The Telluride lodge was just one of the many places the 58-year-old actor has called home throughout his career. He has multiple residences across the globe, including Los Angeles, Calif. and Clearwater, Fla.

Ok, it’s time to get real about Tom Cruise ‘s sisters …

The 54-year-old actor has three siblings, Lee Ann Mapother DeVette, Marian Mapother Henry, and Cass Mapother — and they basically all look like Tom’s twin!

Let’s take a step back in time to learn a bit more about Tom’s family, shall we? The future-actor was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, NY. His parents, Mary Lee Mapother South and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, worked as a special education teacher and an electrical engineer, respectively.

Mary Lee and Thomas welcomed their first child, daughter Lee Ann, in 1959. Two years later, the couple had daughter Marian. Tom’s younger sister, Cass, was later born around 1964.

Tom and his three sisters unfortunately grew up in near-poverty and their father was abusive. The siblings — who were raised Catholic — later moved to Canada before their parents split in the mid-1970s.

In a 2016 interview, Tom’s first-ever girlfriend opened up about his close relationship with his siblings. “I think he grew up too fast but he was very close with his three sisters. Tom Cruise is officially saying goodbye to his 320-acre estate in Telluride, Colorado.

The actor, 58, has sold the 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom property where he famously sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2008 and, a year and a half earlier, opened up to Vanity Fair alongside then-fiancée Katie Holmes , sharing the first photos of their daughter, Suri.

The home is was listed for $39.5 million in March, with lead agent Eric Lavey and Dan Dockray of Sotheby's International Realty . It has now sold at asking.

According to the home's listing, the secluded, sprawling ranch was "custom-built for privacy, where unspoiled natural beauty, sweeping mountain vistas and outdoor recreation abound."

There's an impressive 11,512 square feet of living space split between an almost 10,000-square-foot main house and a guest house with three bedrooms.

Warm wood is the star of the show throughout the interior, featuring heavily in the furnishings, flooring, walls and even the kitchen's counters and island.

Amenities on the property include a game room that currently holds a billiards table, foosball table and piano; a fitness center; two fireplaces; an outdoor terrace and a three-car garage.

"Enveloped in mountain majesty and boasting extensive forested trails, this secluded estate - accessed via a scenic one-mile drive from a secure gated entry - is only minutes from historic downtown Telluride for world-class skiing and golf," the listing notes.

According to Vanity Fair , Cruise began making plans for the compound more than 30 years ago. He completed it in 1994, and put it on the market for $59 million back in 2014.

In her 2006 interview with Cruise and Holmes, 42, Vanity Fair 's Jane Sarkin described the home as having the feeling "of a sprawling lodge or chalet , with rustic, log-cabin touches-informal, airy, built with honey-colored deadwood from Oregon."

According to Sarkin, Holmes, Cruise and their kids (Suri, then 5 months old, and Cruise's son Connor , now 26, and daughter Isabella , now 28) spent their days at the ranch riding around a makeshift motocross track, jumping on an in-ground trampoline, playing golf and sitting around an outdoor fire pit.

Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise, was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. His family moved around a great deal when Cruise was a child to accommodate his father's career.

Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after she remarried. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him. He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls . After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

'Taps,' 'The Outsiders'

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York City, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love , starring Brooke Shields. Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn .

His role in Taps was upgraded after director Harold Becker saw Cruise's potential, and his performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers. In 1983, Cruise appeared in Francis Ford Coppola 's The Outsiders , which also starred Emilio Estevez , Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe —all prominent members of a group of young actors the entertainment press dubbed the "Brat Pack." The film was not well received, but it allowed Cruise to work with an acclaimed director on a high-profile project.

'Risky Business'

His next film, Risky Business (1983), grossed $65 million. It also made Cruise a highly recognizable actor — thanks in no small part to a memorable scene of the young star dancing in his underwear.

In 1986, after a two-year hiatus, the budding actor released the big-budget fantasy film Legend , which did poorly at the box office. That same year, however, Cruise's A-list status was confirmed with the release of Top Gun , which co-starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan . The testosterone-fueled action-romance, set against the backdrop of an elite naval flight school, became the highest-grossing film of 1986.

'The Color of Money,' 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Cruise followed the tremendous success of Top Gun with a string of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He first starred in The Color of Money (1986) with co-star Paul Newman , and then went on to work with Dustin Hoffman on Rain Man (1988). Cruise's next role, as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the biopic Born on the Fourth of July (1989), earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'A Few Good Men,' 'The Firm' and 'Interview with a Vampire'

In 1992, Cruise proved once more that he could hold his own opposite a screen legend when he co-starred with Jack Nicholson in the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men . The film grossed more than $15 million its first weekend and earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination. He continued to demonstrate his success as a leading man with The Firm (1993) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), which co-starred Brad Pitt.

'Mission: Impossible,' 'Jerry McGuire'

Next, Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits—the $64 million blockbuster Mission: Impossible (1996), which the star also produced, and the highly acclaimed Jerry McGuire (1996), directed by Cameron Crowe. For the latter, Cruise earned a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Magnolia'

Cruise and then-wife Kidman spent much of 1997 and 1998 in England shooting Eyes Wide Shut , an erotic thriller that would be director Stanley Kubrick 's final film. The movie came out in the summer of 1999 to mixed reviews, but that year Cruise enjoyed greater success with the release of Magnolia . His performance as a self-confident sex guru in the ensemble film earned him another Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'Vanilla Sky,' 'The Last Samurai'

Cruise then starred in the long-awaited smash hit Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000, alongside Anthony Hopkins , Thandie Newton and Ving Rhames. In 2002, he starred in Vanilla Sky , his second collaboration with Crowe, as well as Steven Spielberg 's Minority Report . The following year, Cruise traveled to Australia to shoot the $100 million war epic The Last Samurai, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination.

'War of the Worlds'

Cruise proved he remained a top draw by starring in the Spielberg-directed remake of the science-fiction classic War of the Worlds (2005), which grossed more than $230 million at the box office.

His next effort, Mission: Impossible 3 (2006), also scored well with audiences. However, Cruise was faced with a professional setback in August when Paramount Pictures ended its 14-year relationship with the actor. The company's chairman cited Cruise's erratic behavior and controversial views as the reason for the split, though industry experts noted that Paramount more likely ended the partnership over Cruise's high earnings from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise quickly rebounded and on November 2, 2006, he announced his new partnership with film executive Paula Wagner and the United Artists film studio. Their first production as a team, the political drama Lions for Lambs (2007), proved a commercial disappointment despite a strong cast that included Meryl Streep and Robert Redford .

'Tropic Thunder'

Taking a break from weighty material, Cruise delighted audiences with his performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder (2008). Despite his relatively small role in a movie that featured Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller , Cruise stood out by obscuring his trademark good looks to play a balding, obese movie studio executive.

'Valkyrie,' 'Rock of Ages'

In December 2008, Cruise released his second project through United Artists. The film, Valkyrie , was a World War II drama about a plot to assassinate German leader Adolf Hitler . Cruise starred as a German army officer who became involved in the conspiracy.

Cruise returned to one of his most popular franchises in 2011 with Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol . Breaking into new territory, he then starred in the 2012 musical Rock of Ages . Although Cruise received some positive reviews for his performance as a rock star, the movie failed to attract much of an audience.

'Jack Reacher,' 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Returning to his mainstream action roots, Cruise starred in the 2012 crime drama Jack Reacher , based on a book by Lee Child. He then headlined a pair of science-fiction adventures, Oblivion (2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Showing no signs of slowing down, the veteran actor in 2015 delivered his usual high-energy performance for the fifth installment of his blockbuster franchise, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation .

Latest Movies and Familiar Franchises

In 2016, Cruise reprised the role of Jack Reacher for Never Go Back . He then headlined a reboot of The Mummy (2017), which performed respectably at the box office but was savaged by critics, before earning better reviews later that year for the crime thriller American Made .

2018 brought a return to familiar territory for Cruise, who starred in Mission Impossible —Fallout that summer. Prior to its release, he tweeted a photo to mark day 1 of production on the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick , scheduled for a June 2020 release.

Scientology and Personal Life

Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. It was through Rogers that the actor became a student of Scientology, the religion founded by writer L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise credited the church with curing his dyslexia, and he soon became one of its leading proponents. However, while his spiritual life flourished, his marriage to Rogers ended in 1990. That same year, Cruise made the racecar drama Days of Thunder alongside Kidman. Though the movie was unpopular among critics and fans alike, the two lead actors had real chemistry. On Christmas Eve 1990, after a brief courtship, Cruise and Kidman married in Telluride, Colorado.

Divorce from Kidman

For much of the 1990s, Cruise and Kidman found themselves fiercely defending the happiness and legitimacy of their marriage. They filed two different lawsuits against tabloid publications for stories they considered libelous. In each case, the couple received a published retraction and apology, along with a large monetary settlement which they donated to charity. The couple has two children, Isabella and Connor.

On February 5, 2001, Cruise and Kidman announced their separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple cited the difficulties involved with two acting careers and the amount of time spent apart while working. Following the divorce, Cruise briefly dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz , followed by a much-publicized relationship with actress Katie Holmes. A month after his ties to Holmes became public, Cruise professed his love for the actress in a now-famous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which he jumped on Winfrey's sofa, shouting "Yes!"

Marriage to Katie Holmes

In June 2005, after a two-month courtship, Cruise proposed to Holmes in a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower. In October, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. The hasty proposal and surprise pregnancy quickly became tabloid gossip. But Cruise made even bigger headlines that year as an outspoken advocate for Scientology. He openly criticized former co-star Brooke Shields for using anti-depressants during her recovery from postpartum depression. He also denounced psychiatry and modern medicine, claiming Scientology held the key to true healing. Cruise's statements led to a heated argument with news anchor Matt Lauer on The Today Show in June 2005, for which Cruise later apologized.

In 2006, Cruise and Holmes welcomed daughter Suri into the world. That year, they were married in an Italian castle, with celebrities Will Smith , Jada Pinkett Smith , Jennifer Lopez and Victoria and David Beckham among those in attendance. However, the storybook romance wouldn't last, and in June 2012, the couple announced their separation.

Tom Cruise appears to have an enterprising solution at hand to this weekend’s M25 travel chaos impacting on Mission: Impossible 8’s cast and crew – fly them in to set via helicopter.

The Hollywood star and avid aviator, 61, is said to have helicopters on standby to help skirt the ‘carmageddon’ expected with massive delays as the M25 has its first-ever daytime closure over the weekend.

A five-mile stretch of the motorway between  junctions 10 and 11 is now shut  in both directions and will remain inaccessible until 6am on Monday while a bridge is demolished and new gantry installed.

Cruise and his cast and crew on the latest action blockbuster, which includes Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson and Hannah Waddingham , are reportedly filming this weekend at Surrey’s Longcross Studios.

The location is just off the M3, close to the M25 closure that has motorists being warned of up to five-hour delays on surrounding roads and the 11.5-mile diversion route.

Producer and Top Gun actor Cruise reportedly has a helipad in Battersea, southwest London, ready to be used to fly any affected cast and crew into set on Surrey, over the motorway.

It’s a spot the qualified pilot has used before , including earlier this month.

‘The M25 closure is a headache for most people but not for Tom. He is so keen to keep Mission: Impossible 8 in production that he’s got helicopters on standby in London to fly his crew over to Longcross,’ a source told The Sun .

‘It sounds excessive but delaying work on the film is a bigger problem and Tom is such a professional – he’d move heaven and Earth to keep the show on the road.’

Mission: Impossible 8 has already been hounded by delays during production thanks to Covid and then last year’s Hollywood actors’ strike, which pushed it from its intended release date in 2024.

‘Staff on the movie or stars who are needed for filming have been told if they can’t get to Longcross because of the M25 closures they’ll be flown in by chopper.’

Unsurprisingly, the observation has been made that it’s ‘a feat that is just like a scene out of one of Tom’s films’.

The upcoming blockbuster, which was recently confirmed to be dropping its intended title of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is now eyeing a May 2025 release.

Assuming, of course, that the M25 doesn’t cause any more issues, with a further four daytime closures of the M25 taking place up to September.

Although dates for these have not yet been announced, the next one is expected in April.

The project, due to be completed in summer 2025, will increase the number of lanes at junction 10, one of the UK’s busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

Jonathan Wade, project leader at National Highways, yesterday advised motorists to simply stay at home if at all possible .  

‘Please, if you can either avoid travelling completely, find something to do at home – decorate the bathroom or something, or play in the garden,’ he told The Independent’s travel podcast.

‘If you must go, travel by train, walk, use a bicycle. I don’t mind really what you do.

‘Avoid driving anywhere around those diversionary routes around Painshill, Byfleet, West Byfleet on the eastern side of Woking. It will be in your interests.’

Cruise and cast including Pegg and Atwell were spotted in Derbyshire over the past few weeks , sparking speculation that parts of the movie were being filmed nearby.

The star then delighted a staff with a surprise visit to Lovage Restaurant in Bakewell between shoots, happily posing for pictures.

The 17-year-old daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise went for a stroll around New York City on Tuesday wearing her Maje Western-style shearling coat ( $2,695 $1,347). She paired the pricey outwear with cozy-looking drawstring pants and celebrity-beloved Birkenstock suede clogs ($160).

Suri carried her favorite water bottle throughout the jaunt with a friend and did not appear to be recognized by passersby as they enjoyed their day on the town.

The Hollywood scion previously wore the jacket while out with Holmes, 45, to whom she looks identical. The “Dawson’s Creek” alum wore an oversize denim jacket during the February outing to complement her daughter’s jeans.

It appears Suri has more in common with her mom than just appearances, as Page Six broke the news in December that the progeny earned a starring role in her school’s play.

We heard Suri played Morticia Addams in “The Addams Family: A New Musical.”

“She was amazing,” one impressed audience member told us, adding that Suri did not name-drop her famous parents in her bio.

Instead, she graciously thanked her teachers, fellow student cast and the crew who worked behind the scenes of the production.

Suri reportedly has been estranged from her “Top Gun: Maverick” star father since he and Holmes finalized their divorce in August 2012.

The “Thank You for Smoking” actress received sole custody of Suri, with Cruise getting visitation rights.

“Life is a challenge,” Cruise, 61, said a year after the divorce . “To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you — that’s what life is. … Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor.”

Sydney Sweeney is loving all of the "girl boss" praise she's receiving ahead of the release of her latest film, Immaculate .

ET's Denny Directo sat down with Sweeney -- who is a producer on the horror flick -- and shared the internet's reaction to her latest venture as she serves as both an executive and the lead in the film.

One tweet hails Sweeney as "saving the movies like a girl Tom Cruise," after comparing her dual roles for  Immaculate to Margot Robbie's for  Barbie .

"First of all, I love Margot. I think she's absolutely incredible and I hope I get to work with her one day," Sweeney said. "And I wanna do all my stunts like Tom Cruise, I wanna do all of it, a thousand percent. I am such an adrenaline junkie, I would do all of that."

She added, "There's no much negativity and hate online, so thank you for pointing out the positive."

As a producer on the film, the Euphoria star celebrated being a lead in the movie and having a seat at the table to "take action." 

"Be a part of the conversation, be at the table, be at the head of the table," she said about the roles she took on as producer.

Immaculate  stars Sweeney, Simona Tabasco, Álvaro Morte and Benedetta Porcaroli, and follows a nun named Cecilia (played by Sweeney) who joins a remote convent outside of Rome. However, her new adventure quickly turns into a nightmare when she discovers a dark secret in her new home. 

Immaculate has been over a decade in the making, as Sweeney recalled auditioning for the role as a teenager, before the project was shelved, making the project more of a priority for her to finish.

"It has been a passion project, I just couldn't stop thinking about it," she shared. "I saw the movie in my head. I was so attracted to the character and her journey and pushing myself to new limits with that and I loved it."

The film premiered during this year's SXSW festival and received high praise. 

"It was so crazy, so we premiered it at SXSW and it was such a great crowd," she told ET. "Everyone was so vocal, they were screaming, they were laughing, they were cheering. I remember just sitting there and was like, 'I really wish that my 16-year-old self could be here right now.' It was incredible."
