DAY 4: Exploring the Amazon Jungle: Amazon Natural Park and Yanaycu Pucate

Wildlife encounters

Iquitos Caño: On your first morning with us, we recommend getting up early to appreciate one of the most important zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Never does nature seem more bountiful than in the tropics, and early rising is always rewarding since wildlife is most abundant and active with the rising of the sun. The early morning hours are the best time of day to watch birds, observe their special displays and listen to their songs. We will jump on the skiffs and head to this area with large trees and old palm trees as well, these components favor the presence of several parrot species. This particular spot also has a great number of other birds of different species. We will look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three toed kind.

Amazon Natural Park: This very unique opportunity, you will get to the only Canopy Walkway in this area, an experience unequaled in the rainforest! At a height of over 25 meters (85 feet) and extending for 500 meters (one-third of a mile), the Canopy Walkway provides a view of the rainforest from the treetops, the best vantage point for observing Amazon wildlife and vegetation. The Canopy Walkway is accessible to all and requires no special skills or equipment. The suspended walkway is spread between 14 of the area’s largest rainforest trees and is one of the longest canopy walkways in the world. You will enjoy “Terra Firma” forest.

Yanayacu Pucate: You will start cruising through the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers, peeking into different creeks and lagoons. This is one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will use his expert eye to pinpoint all the biodiversity of this region. If you want to interact directly with the waters of the Amazon, go out on one of our kayaks or paddle boards. You will even have the opportunity to spot the famous pink dolphins! After dinner, you will enjoy a night safari on Nauta Caño. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises! It’s almost unbelieveable how with every step you find something along the way. Almost definitely Anaconda, Rainbow Boas, Tarantulas, Poison Frogs, and most recently porquepines have been spotted. DAY 7: The Best of Sacred Valley (Maras, Moray, Ollantaytambo, Picnic at scenic spot)

Ancient Incan Temples, Quaint Andean Villages

Today, a great nutritious breakfast makes us ready for a full-day exploration of the highlights of the Sacred Valley. The first place to visit will be Ollantaytambo, an impressive Incan site, with amazing farming terraces and a temple of the sun, for the sun temple the construction boulders of over 100 tons were brought from 5 miles away. Our next place to visit is Moray, a unique Incan farming testing center, where the Incas built terraces in a rounded shape in order to generate sort of microclimates, which were used to acclimate different types of plants, here you will explore and learn about this place since the hands of your private guide. After Moray, we will drive to Maras’s salt pans, which was the main salt source to provide to Cusco and other settlements in Urubamba Valley like Machu Picchu during the Incan times, today the locals still process the salt using the ancient techniques as the Incas would do.

To have a perfect day, you will enjoy a picnic by midday at a scenic spot with llamas roaming around you and great vistas in further directions, for sure, this will be unique and unforgettable. In the afternoon we will drive back to your hotel in the Sacred Valley Urubamba. Breakfast and lunch included.

peru machu picchu and amazon tour

6. The Best Fare For The Best Trip

7. you book, you go…don’t worry… we won’t cancel, 8. we are local entrepreneurs, a family enterprise.

Probably you will see that most of the tour operators mention it on their websites that are local tour companies, however, if you research a little deeper you will find out that’s not true, they might be although half of the operation is done from here and another half abroad, they even have NorthAmerican phone number or European phone numbers, which is a clue to find out, we are not against the foreigner companies or half foreign companies, what we are against is that they lie.

9. Responsible Travel

Be a responsible traveller! Let’s make this world a better place for everyone and for everyone that lives in it!  The natural environments that we travel to are fragile and abundant with beautiful culture and traditions that are often reliant on tourism. We have a responsibility as travelers to minimize the impact of our presence, protect what is delicate, and leave a positive influence everywhere we can.

As a locally owned and based Peruvian tour company, we integrate these practices into our in-country operations we are aiming for a style of travel that makes the world a better place for everyone, and for everyone that lives in it. Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Peru Summit Adventures is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference by helping and investing in local communities, education initiatives, environmental conservation projects. These values are not more than just words, they are ingrained in the culture and philosophy of our crew, daily operations of Peru Summit Adventures trips, and at our office too.

The trip was amazing...

The guides were informative and made interesting stops along the way during our transfers. We added the tour of the Sacred Valley and saw the Temple of the Sun, which was a highlight after being at Machu Picchu the previous day. We saw even more of the Inca's amazing architecture and terraces.

This fascinating walking tour will help you gain a little insight into the local Limeño culture and history. After being picked up from your hotel at 9 am, the taxi will take you to the Miraflores market, where Peruvian merchants will enlighten you on the local produce and outline the different types of potatoes, corn, and fruits that can be found in Peru. Today you’ll delve into the mythical Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest and area of pristine natural beauty. As you fly over Peru you’ll see the spectacular landscapes below transform from undulating mountains to the endless forested greenery of the Amazon – an utterly breathtaking sight. Once you touchdown in Puerto Maldonado you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to the bustling harbor, where your peque – traditional canoe – awaits to take you to your lodge. Glide down the Madre de Dios River on an hour’s boat ride, weaving along the wild waters and keeping an eye and an ear out for the resident pink dolphins and caiman crocs, until you reach your jungle retreat. Here you’ll have time to settle in and take lunch, enjoy a siesta, or simply listen to the melodious jungle soundscape before you begin the afternoon excursions. Parrots, lakes and monkeys

It’ll be an early start to catch nature before the heat catches you out! We recommend getting up at 4.30 am and heading to the clay lick close to the lodge, where a flurry of brightly-colored parrots descend for breakfast, pecking at the clay. You might also wish to visit the nearby oxbow lake, slipping through the glassy water on a wooden canoe, and soaking up the pristine scenery surrounding you. The virgin lake and forest are populated with resident red howler monkeys, macaws, turtles, and the endangered giant river otter, to name a few. After you’ve returned to the lodge for a well-deserved lunch, you might be tempted by a little adventure and if that’s the case, the canopy walk is just the ticket. You’ll explore the rainforest from a completely new perspective, walking among the emerald treetops and getting up close to howler monkeys, birds and sloths. Wander amongst the trees for an hour and a half, or linger longer to catch the sunset from one of the viewing towers, before returning to your jungle lodging for dinner and drinks. >Included: Group excursions in Puerto Maldonado; Accommodation in Puerto Maldonado. • Meet your transfer to the airport for an early flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon rainforest. Upon arrival, a representative will meet you at the airport and accompany you to the port for your transfer by boat to your jungle lodge. As you leave the city of Puerto Maldonado behind, you’ll soon be enveloped in the completely different world of the surrounding rainforest as you travel up the Tambopata River, the jungle’s canopy towering on either side.
  • Upon arrival at the lodge, you’ll have time to settle in and relax as well as meet your guide and learn about the variety of activities that you will enjoy during your stay. Many of the lodges are located within the territory of the Ese’eja native community, and are built with the same materials and architectural techniques as those used by native communities throughout the Amazon. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and have the rest of the evening at your leisure.

Day 3 : Amazon Tour

peru machu picchu and amazon tour

  • Mornings in the jungle always start early and today you’ll set out at dawn for your first Amazon adventure. Today, you may be able to spot caimans, turtles, hoatzins, toucans, and–if you’re lucky–endangered giant river otters that can reach a length of six feet! Morning tends to be the best time of day to see a variety of wildlife. You’ll then return to the lodge for lunch, before setting out for another adventure with your expert naturalist guide. This afternoon will focus on flora, and your guide will walk with you through the forest, pointing out hidden jungle inhabitants and numerous indigenous plants.
  • After dinner, you’ll head out into the jungle again for a night walk. Once the sun goes down, the jungle comes to life with a completely new assortment of nocturnal creatures that come out. Visitors often say that experiencing the jungle at night, on a dark trail with only a flashlight, is an unforgettable experience. Alternatively, you can simply relax to the sounds of the jungle in your cabana hammock.

Note: The exact order of activities may vary due to weather conditions and other considerations. Your Amazon guide will provide details about the activities that you will enjoy each day.

Day 4: Amazon Tour

peru machu picchu and amazon tour

  • You’ll return to the lodge for lunch and will have time to rest and relax before setting out for another tour. This time, you’ll learn more about human life in the jungle, examining the type of fruits and vegetables that local communities grow. Return before dark to the jungle lodge for your last evening in the Peruvian rainforest.

Day 5 : Fly to Cusco

DAY 5: SANDOVAL LAKE – “CANOPY”

We will get up very early in order to take an advantage of the cool morning weather. We will head to Sandoval Lake located in the Tambopata National Reserve. This ecosystem is a habitat of many species. Some of them are close to extinction!. For instance, red howler monkeys, giant otters, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, and turtles. You will have an opportunity to see many more species navigating the lake such as fish, birds, insects, rodents, etc. Therefore, carry your camera with you all the time to not miss any shots.

When back in our lodge, a delicious jungle-styled lunch awaits you because you will need to fill in the energy necessary for another adventure – canopy. This is a type of bridge built on the top of a tree at a height of over 35 meters. We will experience 4 of them with a length of 25 meters. Therefore, we will have a chance to see a variety of colorful birds, lazy bears, monkeys, and other species. If you wish, you can wait until the afternoon and observe the astonishing sunset above the Amazon from there. You can return to the lodge afterward, take a nap or play some games with the others. A rich dinner will be served before you will have a rest in your room.

There, we can admire them and take lots of stunning pictures. Arrive in time to meet your fellow travelers for a welcome gathering this evening. Your arrival transfer is included.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 lima/sacred valley of the inca.

Board an early flight to Cusco, the gateway to Peru's Inca heartland. Take in spectacular Andean scenery as we drive north into Urubamba Valley—also known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Arrive at Piuray Lake, an azure oasis framed by snowcapped peaks. Enjoy a lakeside lunch and soak up free time amid the mountain views. Continue to your hotel and settle in before dinner.

Meals included:

Day 3 sacred valley of the inca.

Begin the day with a visit to a G Adventures–supported women’s weaving cooperative, where we’ll observe traditional weaving and dying techniques and meet some of the weavers. Next, test your Spanish skills as you bargain with vendors at the famed Pisac Market—a wonderland of colorful Quechua handicrafts. Break for a farm-to-table lunch at the G Adventures–supported Parwa Community Restaurant, tasting Peruvian dishes while learning how this resident-run restaurant helps fund community projects. In the afternoon, opt to relax at our hotel or visit the Inca ruins of Moray and the salt pans of Maras.

Day 4 Sacred Valley of the Inca/Aguas Calientes

Explore the former Inca stronghold of Ollantaytambo, stepping back in time amid ancient terraces, storehouses, and an enormous temple-fortress. Then hop aboard a train for the journey through the Urubamba Valley to the end of the line: Aguas Calientes, a frontier town nestled beneath Machu Picchu. The afternoon is free for optional excursions, including a visit to a butterfly farm or to the nearby hot springs.

Day 5 Machu Picchu

Rise and shine! After a light breakfast, head to Machu Picchu to see the citadel in the early morning light, before the crowds arrive. Spend the morning exploring the ruins with our guides and pondering the mysteries of this “lost” city of the Inca, forgotten at the Spanish conquest and rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham with support from National Geographic. This afternoon, return by train to Ollantaytambo and transfer to Cusco.

Day 6 Cusco

Set out to explore the beautiful streets and plazas of Cusco, once lavishly adorned with Inca gold that was stolen by the Spanish during the conquest. Visit the sprawling San Pedro Market, where you’ll find everything from pickled snakes to savory tamales, and visit the Machu Picchu Museum to see an array of Inca artifacts that were discovered at Machu Picchu. Later, enjoy a star-filled evening at the Cusco Planetarium, learning about the importance of astronomy to the ancient Inca and peering at the glittering night sky through high-powered telescopes.

Day 7 Cusco/Tambopata National Reserve

Today, we set out to discover a wilder side of Peru! Catch a morning flight to Puerto Maldonado, then continue by motorized canoe along the Tambopata River to our jungle lodge in the Amazon rainforest. Have lunch on board the boat and keep an eye out for wildlife and birds along the way. Upon arrival, settle into your thatched lodging, situated near Tambopata National Reserve—a biodiversity hotspot. In the afternoon, join a naturalist guide to seek out the wildlife of the rainforest—from colorful butterflies to huge spiders—and learn the uses for medicinal and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques.

Day 8 Tambopata National Reserve

Grab your binoculars and head out with naturalist guides to explore the rainforest’s complex ecosystems. Search the forest canopy where colorful toucans, boisterous howler monkeys, and sloths may be spotted. Hike to an oxbow lake, and paddle dugout canoes to glimpse river otters, turtles, and, if we’re lucky, an anaconda or two! This evening we’ll venture out in a motorized canoe to spot the jungle’s elusive nocturnal species. If we're lucky we'll spot caimans, the smaller cousins of alligators, hiding along the muddy banks.

Day 9 Tambopata National Reserve/Lima

Enjoy a final breakfast at our lodge, then board a motorized canoe and return upriver to Puerto Maldonado. Fly to Lima and check in to our hotel. This evening, celebrate our adventure at the farewell dinner.

Day 10 Lima

Depart at any time.

A fruit basket, fresh flowers, and fine chocolates will be waiting for you. The room will be oxygenated (the only hotel in the world with this facility) to help you relax and sleep more comfortably in the high altitude setting of Cuzco (11,600ft above sea level). After a recommended light lunch in the wonderful hotel restaurant, a private guided tour of Cuzco including the Cathedral, Qoricancha temple, the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cuzco, Qenko and Puka Pukara. Return to the hotel. Dinner in the El Tupay Restaurant. On Saturdays a folkloric music show will accompany your dinner.

Cusco - Luxury Peru Tour 6

Enjoy a good night's sleep before your private transfer at 9AM to Poroy, a short distance from Cuzco. Boarding of the luxurious Hiram Bingham train to Aguas Calientes. This Orient Express train is the most exclusive way to visit Machu Picchu and includes a hearty brunch aboard the train. Guides will also be available to answer any questions. Arrival to Aguas Calientes, assistance with your luggage and boarding of the bus for the short ride up to Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca citadel. At the very entrance to Machu Picchu, your hotel is located, the Sanctuary Lodge hotel . VIP check-in to your room, complete with king size bed and a view of the incredible mountains. A welcome drink and fruit basket will be waiting for you. Shortly after, a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the most spectacular ancient city in the world. Built by the Inca Pachacutec, and comprising stone blocks fitted with masterful precision, Machu Picchu harmoniously blends into the mountain landscape. There are many theories as to the origins behind Machu Picchu but three of the most popular ideas include a temple to the sun, a fortress against the jungle inhabitants or a sanctuary for the Incas. This fabulous city has houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture. Lunch (if required), dinner and accommodation at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Opportunity to return to the site once all the other visitors have gone and an opportunity to truly appreciate the grandiose setting of this Inca masterpiece; with no crowds but only an eerie silence that few people experience.

Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge   |   Meals: L, D

Early opportunity to return to the site and enjoy a wonderful sunrise over Machu Picchu. Time for some private reflection before returning for breakfast. Today no guide is provided as we feel that Machu Picchu requires a certain amount of self discovery to be fully understood. Take any of the several paths around various parts of the site (we will provide a map to help you), trek up to Wayna Picchu or walk down to the Inca's bridge. Let Machu Picchu unfold all its mysteries for you, take in the breathtaking cloud forests and jagged mountains, or marvel at the extraordinary Masonic precision of the ancient Incas. Either way, your day of self discovery will be a day never to be forgotten. Return to your hotel for lunch before returning back down to Aguas Calientes by bus. Some free time to visit the colourful town before boarding the Hiram Bingham train in the early evening. Return in style, converse with your fellow passengers and guides and enjoy cocktails followed by a four course dinner. Reception and transfer to the Monasterio hotel .

Machupicchu Cusco - Luxury Peru Tour 6

After breakfast, a private full-day excursion to Urubamba, the sacred valley of the Incas and to the ancient Inca market town of Pisac. Lunch in Urubamba or a picnic lunch will be provided. A visit will be made to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town that was not defeated by the Spanish and a chance to explore the ruins before returning to Cuzco. Return to your hotel to relax and unwind. Before dinner, enjoy a 30 minute 'Inca massage' accompanied by traditional music. This relaxing massage incorporates aromatherapy using Kantu, the sacred flower of the Incas. Dinner in Cuzco at a recommended restaurant.

Meals: B, L, D

Sacred Valley - Luxury Peru Tour 6

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight back to Lima. Transfer to your hotel, the Miraflores Park Hotel . Before lunch, a private guided visit of colonial and modern Lima, including the cathedral, dating from 1654, the main square, which still houses the original bronze fountain built in 1650, and the San Francisco Convent and its catacombs. Known as the city of the kings, Lima was founded in 1535 by Pizarro and rebuilt in 1991, the same year that UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. One of the very few South American cities that preserve the colonial past, Lima was home to the Spanish viceroy during the time of the Spanish colonialists. The tour will include a visit to the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores, before stopping at Larco Mar to enjoy a view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Lunch at the internationally renowned Rosa Nautica, the best seafood restaurant in Lima. After lunch, a visit to a museum of your choice. We recommend the Gold Museum , originally from a private collection. The museum includes valuable pieces, particularly gold, silver and copper from several pre-Hispanic cultures. The most precious piece in the collection is the solid gold Tumi (ceremonial knife) belonging to the Lambayeque culture. Return to your hotel to enjoy a relaxing 60 minute massage (for two people) which will invigorate the senses and prepare you for a delicious dinner at the Huaca Pucllana Restaruant. Located within an actual pre-Inca archaeological site and next to a 1500 year old adobe pyramid, the food here is exquisite and the sommelier will help you choose amongst your personal favourites or some Chilean and Argentinean classics. Return to your hotel.

Miraflores Park Plaza Hotel   |   Meals: B, L, D

Free morning for some shopping before the second phase of your adventure begins, that of the Amazon Jungle Cruise. Midday transfer to the airport for the flight to Iquitos. Arrival at approximately 5PM, collect your luggage and board the air conditioned bus for a scenic one and a half hour drive to the small village of Nauta, where your luxury vessel, the M/V Aqua lies at anchor. You will settle into your over-sized Master suite, measuring a generous 240 square feet and including a separate, intimate seating area for optimum privacy. This fully air-conditioned suite, faces outwards at the very front of the vessel, and comes complete with panoramic glass windows. Open the curtain at the foot of your California king-sized (or separate singles) bed at night and count the constellations in a sky filled with brilliant stars. Your master suite also comes complete with a private bath, shower, 24 hour hot water, a hairdryer, and a basket of luxury toiletries. The fine Peruvian linens, with a high thread count will help you sleep very soundly after each day's excursion. All meals are prepared by Executive chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, one of Lima's culinary stars who has created a menu that draws on both Peruvian and European influence. Wine is included with meals, giving you the opportunity to experience a range of the finest South American vintages. Over the next four days, you will sail along in total comfort over several tributaries of the Amazon River, as well as on the mighty river itself. A safety drill and briefing on the top deck, before the journey begins and you settle down to some fine dining on the Amazon River.

Jaguar - Amazon - Luxury Peru Tour 6

After a delicious breakfast, a jungle walk to the Yanallpa Lake in search of the "hoatzins", prehistoric birds which live in huge colonies. As we embark on the gentle hike, your guides will teach you orientation techniques used in the deep jungle. Return to the cruiser to enjoy a light lunch. In the afternoon we will cruise the majestic Ucayali River, offering a chance to see and meet native balseros, or fishermen, who will demonstrate their skill and let you see their catch-including a type of "armored" catfish with a shell-like skin which they are taking to the market in the small village of Requena. We will also find a "banana balsero" raft, loaded with hundreds of clusters of bananas, drifting down the river to the market. Dinner is followed by a trip to the Sapote River where your guides will show you several types of caiman, members of the alligator family, along the fish-rich Sapote River. Chances are good that we will surprise other night-dwelling creatures as well. Retire for the night as the cruiser sails upstream on the Puinahua River.

After breakfast, a jungle walk near to the Hatum Posa Village. On this walk, your guides will introduce you to the native people involved in subsistence farming, and will tell you how they learned to cultivate wild plants and trees to earn farm income. Deep in the primary forest, your guides will also show you the wealth of fruit trees and medicinal plants hidden in the undergrowth. Return for lunch before the expedition continues onto the Pacaya River and Yanayacu Lake. In the late afternoon, we will take a journey along the Pacaya River, journeying from Ranger Station No. 1 towards Yanayacu Lake, where you can view the abundant life that is hidden in the deep rainforest. You may see saki monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and the easy-to-spot heavy howler monkeys. As the sun sets, you will hear the loud, ferocious sounding warning signals made by howler monkeys marking their territories. When night falls, you will hear the more of the rainforest sounds as nocturnal animals send their shrill calls across the tree tops. We will use our special spotlight torches to locate night creatures, including, perhaps, huge caiman. Return for dinner aboard the cruiser. Tonight we will dock at the Ranger Station in the Pacaya Samiria National Park.

Master Suites - Luxury Peru Tour 6

Early breakfast before your guides will show you parrots, macaws, toucans, and many different types of monkeys in the area. We will also go to the dolphin feeding spots along Yanayacu Lake, where you will witness these delightful but rare freshwater mammals. We will then start our journey homeward sailing towards Iquitos whilst enjoying a light lunch. Your luggage will be collected from your cabins for transference to the bus, before disembarking at 12:40 and returning to the airport. En route, we shall visit this fascinating city, accessible only by air and river which comes complete with its famous house built by Gustave Eiffel, as Iquitos was once a rich center of the rubber industry. After the city tour, we will make a stop at San Juan Amazonian Indians' Market for some last-minute shopping. Arrival at Iquitos airport, where we will assist with your check-in until your flight departure at 5:30 p.m. (Note: All itineraries are subject to change, due to weather and other conditions. All times indicated are approximate, and are also subject to change. 8 day cruises departing on Saturdays are also available, ask for details).

How to Plan an Epic Peru Family Vacation

W hether you want to cross exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu off your family’s travel bucket list, or you long to explore the magnificent geological features of Rainbow Mountain near Cusco, Peru represents the perfect spot for a multi-generational family vacation . We’ve been wanting to visit Peru for awhile and have always appreciated Our Whole Village ‘s philosophy and itineraries.

Our Whole Village (OWV) is a family-focused travel agency that designs meaningful and culturally immersive trips for families who want to create lasting memories, travel more consciously, and give back. I asked OWV to put together this Peru guide, including their favorite activities and accommodations.

Peru Family Vacation Guide

Why take a family vacation to peru.

Peru contains stunning natural beauty, from high-elevation lakes to remote deserts and prime Amazon rainforest. Its rich and varied history means there are archaeological treasures from civilizations as diverse as the Norte Chico, Wari, Nazca, and Inca scattered across the land.

From the colonial charm of Cusco to the ancient splendor of Sacsayhuaman, the iconic llamas and alpacas of the Sacred Valley to the lush rainforests of Puerto Maldonado, there’s something for every age and interest in Peru. What’s more, the “Land of the Incas” boasts some of the best food in the world, founded on agricultural practices left unchanged for more than 2,000 years.

Where Is Peru?

South America is moderately easy to reach from the United States. While Peru has 234 airports, only 24 of those receive regularly scheduled flights from Peru’s leading domestic airlines. Most travelers fly directly into Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) before catching connecting flights to final destinations such as Cusco (CUZ) or Puerto Maldonado (PEM) (for a visit to the Amazon Basin).

What to Know Before You Travel to Peru

Peru currency.

The  official currency of Peru  is the  nuevo sol  (S/) or Peruvian  sol . Since the nation still operates primarily on cash, keep plenty of paper money and coins on hand. Don’t expect to find ATMs or currency exchanges in small villages and towns.

While US dollars may also be accepted, expect change given in the local currency. So, you’ll have to do a little math to make sure you receive the correct change.

In certain parts of Peru, such as the Columbian and Peruvian border area in the Loreto region, criminal activity is more common. The American government also recommends avoiding the area in central Peru known as the Valley of the Rivers Apurimac, Mantaro, and Ene.

Remain aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant as you would with any location that you’re visiting while at home or abroad. Use common sense and don’t venture out after dark. For more information on safety during your vacation, check out the  latest update s .

Vaccinations for Peru

The CDC does recommend travelers to Peru take certain precautions. Hepatitis A is an important one, as well as Typhoid, and Tetanus. Check out these travel vaccines for Peru recommended by Passport Health (which is a great place to go for your shots) to see what you might need to have before a visit.

Transportation in Peru

There is a vast diversity when it comes to forms of transportation in Peru , from antiquated trucks to modern air fleets. As you travel through the countryside, you will need to strike a balance between comfort, practicality, cost, and safety. Better yet, work with a travel company that can organize transportation needs in advance, relying on the most comfortable and modern standards.

Peru Challenges and Concerns

When traveling to Peru, prepare for soaring heights and panoramic vistas. Of course, these views come with the potential for altitude sickness (or  soroche ). Prevention through acclimatization to higher elevation remains the best line of defense.

Recognizing the telltale signs of altitude sickness is important. They include loss of appetite or nausea, headaches, lethargy, and poor sleep. To avoid altitude sickness, make rest a priority, avoid alcohol, and eat in moderation.

Healthcare in Peru

The public healthcare system provides all Peruvians with access to medical care regardless of their income. The private health sector is mainly centered in the capital city of Lima.

Private clinics provide a much higher standard of care than public health facilities, and they have up-to-date medical equipment, supplies, diagnostic equipment, medicine, and well-trained nurses and physicians. Tourists to Peru should purchase an international health insurance policy before arrival to cover any expenses that arise while abroad.

When is the Best Time to Visit Peru?

As with any vacation, you’ll need to choose the right time for you, but here is what you can expect when traveling to Peru.  Dry Season:  May to October.  Rainy Season:  November through April.  High Season:  July and August, mid-December to mid-January.

Optimal Travel Times:  April to June or September to November. It’s a good choice to travel during these times so that you can enjoy lighter crowds, warmer temperatures, and fewer rainy days.

What to Pack for Peru?

When in Peru, prepare to dress for a variety of microclimates found at various elevations. The nation contains 28 of the 32 world climates. What does this mean for multigenerational travelers? Remember to pack for temperature fluctuations. In other words, layering will be your friend.

Choose wrinkle-free materials that pack easily and can be washed on the go and air-dried. Don’t forget a compact raincoat for the occasional drizzle and a light down jacket for evenings when temperatures can drop drastically.

You’ll also want to invest in comfortable walking shoes that can handle brief treks through the mountains or jungle. Plus, make sure to leave some extra room to bring back  souvenirs from Peru .

Things to do in Peru with kids

Paddleboard or kayak on piuray lagoon.

Enjoy a 15-minute yoga session before heading out onto Piuray Lagoon for a paddleboarding or kayaking lesson . The calm, mirror-like waters of the lake are perfect for practicing new skills while enjoying breathtaking vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Enjoy an Immersive Visit to the Huilloc Community

Experience the vibrant indigenous culture of the Sacred Valley of the Incas (or Urubamba Valley) while being symbolically integrated into the Huilloc community. You’ll get dressed in typical clothes and use traditional tools to participate in the lifeways of the Andean people.

Explore the Peruvian Amazon

From the Tambopata National Reserve to Manú National Park, enjoy spectacular views and many family-friendly activities. These include river cruises, accessible jungle hikes, visits to indigenous villages, and plenty of wildlife observation. A Peruvian Amazon tour is a great way to break up your trip.

Take the Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu

Savor the dramatic scenery of the Andes on a scenic train journey to the station at Agua Calientes. There, board a coach for a 25-minute ride to Machu Picchu , the fabled “Lost City of the Incas” built circa 1450 by the Inca emperor Pachacuti.

What to Eat in Peru?

Peruvian food is enjoying a moment and with good reason. This cuisine reflects the diverse history, culture, and local resources of the nation while offering plenty of mouthwatering recipes. What should you order while in Peru? Some of our favorite dishes include:

  • Aji de Gallina : A chicken dish crafted using Peru’s famous bright yellow Aji Amarillo peppers. The slight spiciness of the meal keeps it from descending into boredom without proving “too hot” for kids.
  • Salchipapas : This mixture of papas (potatoes) and salchidas (sausage) will put a smile on any kid’s (or adult’s) face.  It also represents a hearty treat that’ll stick with you throughout the day.
  • Papas a la Huanca í na : This glorious mixture of  huancaína , a creamy cheese sauce, over boiled Peruvian potatoes and hard-boiled eggs tastes both rich and satisfying.
  • Mazamorra Morada : This popular dessert is made from purple corn and fruit and will please just about any sweet-loving palate.

From  Aji de Gallina to Salchipapas , there’s no end to yummy Peruvian food for kids. What’s more, the Peruvian reliance on local vegetables and fruits translates into nutritious dishes sure to satisfy without causing a sugar rush.

Accommodations in Peru

Multigenerational travels to Peru provide ample opportunity for three generations (or more) of your family to come together for unforgettable memory-making. It’s important to find accommodations that fit the needs of your family.

Where to Stay in Peru with a Family

Here are a few more upscale options for the most luxurious traveler:

  • Belmond Miraflores (Lima)
  • Tambo del Inka (Sacred Valley)
  • Titilaka (Lake Titicaca)
  • Inkaterra (Machu Picchu)
  • Belmond Monasterio (Cusco)

Peru Itinerary ideas

A family vacation to Peru should be a minimum of 10 or 11 days long to allow for travel both ways. A flight from New York to Lima takes approximately eight hours. Peru family travel will also require time to acclimate to the high altitude of places within the Sacred Valley, including Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Peru itinerary: Lima to Cusco

Fly into Lima and spend a couple of days exploring the city. Head to Cusco to start your Sacred Valley experience. At Piuray Lagoon, enjoy a kayaking or paddleboarding lesson before taking a traditional Andean ceramics class.

Continue to Chinchero, Maras, Moray, and Ollantaytambo, to learn more about the vibrant Inca Civilization. In Huilloc, enjoy a community-based experience that provides a behind-the-scenes look into daily life. Then, take a scenic Vistadome train ride to Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll savor the mystique and adventure of the “Lost City.”

While visiting Machu Picchu, you can also stop into the small town of Aguas Calientes, nestled along the banks of the Urubamba River. There, the whole family can enjoy shops and eateries, or soaking in the hot springs. Then, take a short walk to the Machu Picchu Site Museum and Botanical Garen where you can explore a wide variety of local flora.

You can also discover the architectural wonders of Cusco and Sacsayhuaman or enjoy a horseback riding expedition in the Andes Mountains with a tour guide. For a sweet stop, participate in a chocolate-making workshop at a chocolate museum.

This is the  Peru itinerary  we looked at for planning a trip.

Amazon Extension: Puerto Maldonado

Take a short flight from the Lima Airport into Puerto Maldonado Airport and head to the pier just 15 minutes away. From there, spend 45 minutes sailing along the Madres de Dios River to your hotel, experiencing expansive vistas of the forest along the way.

Choose from a variety of excursions that allow you to explore the rainforest at your own pace. Options include a guided walk to learn more about the Amazon Basin, passing by impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco and the strangler fig. Or, explore the river by night, keeping an eye out for the rainforest’s nocturnal creatures — owls, capybaras, nightjars, alligators, and more.
