Casino Options at Each Major UK Airport

Now it’s time to discuss the details. Depending on where you’re traveling from and too will greatly affect your pre/post-flight casino experience. In the following section, we’re going to discuss the exact details of each airport around the UK offering a substantial range of gambling options to clients. Of course, if none of the land-based casinos take your fancy, you can always go on your phone and play roulette or try the best blackjack casinos . If you are stumped for where to play, why not have a look at one of our top recommended casino sites ?.

Without further ado, let’s jump straight into the first airport on the list!

Grosvenor Casino at Luton Airport

Rating: 9/10

As any regular attendee of Luton airport will attest, this airport has fantastic gaming facilities in the form of slot machines and video games : but if you’re after a truly splendid gambling experience, then you’ll have to step outside the airport perimeter and visit the Grosvenor casino fortress. This fantastic gaming venue is the ultimate pre/post-flight gambling experience. Located just 2km outside the airport perimeter it is easily accessible for clients of the airport looking to have a bit of fun before their flight. If you’re interested, you can learn more about the operator’s online site by checking out our full Grosvenor review .

Birmingham City Airport On-Site Casino

Rating: 8/10

Clients traveling through the terminals of Birmingham International Airport will be very pleased to discover that the airport is home to a huge Genting International complex . Strictly speaking, the casino is not on airport property, you will have to walk about 5 mins from the terminal building to get there – so bad news if you’re on an international connecting flight. For everyone else, you have access to a high-quality casino filled to the rafters with gambling classics.

London City Airport Gambling

Rating: 7/10

If you’re in the vicinity of the London City Airport and have the inclination to gamble, then you simply have to visit the Aspera Stratford Casino. This wonderful venue is legendary in east London, and has become a central place for gambling and casino enthusiasts alike . The casino keeps its doors open 24/7, and inside you’ll find a whole plethora of gaming options from live roulette, blackjack, baccarat and many other exciting games. The casino itself is located just 5km outside the airport. The carpark is packed full of taxis shuttling people back to the airport terminal, so no worries if you’re short on time and only want to stop by to have a quick game.

Casinos Near Heathrow Airport

Rating: 6/10

The central hub of UK international travel. Heathrow is the busiest airport in the world. It connects the financial super-hub of London to the international markets. There are hundreds of flights landing and taking off each hour from this mighty port, but what are the options when it comes to casino gambling on the premises? Unfortunately, there isn’t a genuine casino inside the airport, but there is the Voyager gaming room . Here you can play a variety of video games and fruit machines – if you’re interested, head over to Terminal 3. Also worth noting, less than 2 miles outside the airport there are a couple of established brick & mortar casino venues that regularly serve airport clients. So if you’re really keen to play, hop in a cab outside the airport building and get over there!

Coral Bookmakers at Stansted Airport

Rating 5/10

If you’re traveling through one of the popular budget airlines to our from London, then the likelihood is you’ll be porting at Stansted Airport. The airport is a very modern building with lots of amenities and shops to keep clients happy before the journey. In terms of gambling options at this airport, there are several considerations you need to make. Before entering security there is a well-equipped Coral bookmakers shop . Here you can play a variety of slot machines, video poker and casino games: also, you’ll be able to watch live dog/horse racing and place any sports bet you desire. The only catch with this one is its location, it is before security, so bad luck if you’re on an international connecting flight.

If you’re unhappy with these airport casinos and have some time in London, you can always have a look to see which one of these options recommended by tripadvisor.co.uk might suit you best.

Our Ranking Criteria for UK Airport Casino Facilities

When we’re judging the quality of UK airport casino facilities, we take into consideration a number of variables. In order to be objective and provide our readers with accurate and actionable insights about the services you can expect at each international airport, we broke our analysis down into three main components.

  • Accessibility : this is a primary concern of airport travelers. How far is the casino or gambling facility away from the departure gate? This, of course, determines the playing duration and other convenience concerns.
  • Gaming Options : an obvious but key factor in determining the best casinos at UK airports. Is this just a tiny room with a few slot machines, or a much larger established casino venue?
  • Atmosphere & Extras : we all love to get something extra for our buck. When it comes to casino gambling there are many features to consider. Gambling in a casino can come with many additional perks such as open bars, smoke-free rooms and restaurants. We considered all this into our rating of each venue.

Look Out for Top Casino Venues on Your Next Trip

With this comprehensive analysis of each casino venue available at UK airports, we’re sure that you’ll have a confident understanding of the options available to you. Whether you’re traveling into the UK or departing the British Isles, there is always ample opportunity to relax and switch off before a long trans-continental flight. Voyager advances in creditor compensation with $484 million in settlements

Bankrupt cryptocurrency firm Voyager Digital has secured $484 million through various settlements, including agreements with FTX and Three Arrows Capital (3AC), as well as claims against Directors and Officers (D&O) insurance.

voyager gaming heathrow

According to a filing with the bankruptcy court in New York, Voyager outlined that it has recovered a substantial portion of these funds, nearly $450 million, from a settlement with FTX. The collapse of the crypto market, triggered by the Terra ecosystem failure, led Voyager to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2022.

Further complications arose in October 2023 when the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed lawsuits against Voyager’s former CEO, Stephen Ehrlich , alleging fraudulent statements. The settlement with FTX, inclusive of interest, is expected to cover about 25% of the total claims made by Voyager’s creditors , with distributions slated to start shortly.

Meanwhile, Voyager has claimed $675 million in its ongoing litigation with Three Arrows Capital, with an initial distribution of $20.43 million representing Voyager’s share. The company anticipates future payments as assets are liquidated and additional settlement agreements are reached. A D&O insurance mediation settlement is also set to contribute at least $14.35 million to the creditor repayment efforts.

Despite these advances, Voyager continues to face operational challenges, including a significant number of uncashed checks. The company reported that around 270,000 checks, totaling $17 million and predominantly valued at less than $25, have yet to be cashed. A deadline of April 20 has been set for these checks to be claimed before they are voided.

Voyager is also addressing issues stemming from an FTX data breach, with an investigation underway to ascertain the breach’s origins and implications, which compromised creditor data.

As of May 2023, Voyager proposed a restructuring plan allowing customers to recover 35.7% of their claims in cryptocurrency or cash. Additionally, the crypto exchange reached a settlement with the FTC in November 2023, agreeing to $1.65 billion in monetary relief.

Any idea when new 6800m drivers are going to be available for download? Like many others, I have not been able to download and install the driver updates directly from AMD without Windows rolling the driver back automatically. It's become quite frustrating that we cannot play the latest games. I am still within my return window with this gaming laptop and will likely return it should no updates or bug fixes are released soon.

Voyager is why star trek is replacing discovery’s spore drive.

Starfleet is abandoning the spore drive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, having found a better form of warp travel thanks to the USS Voyager.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 bids farewell to the spore drive, as USS Voyager's pathway drive takes over in the 32nd century.
  • Commander Stamets reveals Starfleet's decision to halt spore drive development, making Discovery unique in the Star Trek franchise.
  • The USS Voyager-J's pathway drive paves the way for safer and sustainable warp travel in Star Trek's future.

The 32nd century's version of the USS Voyager is the reason that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is abandoning Starfleet's revolutionary spore drive technology. Since they arrived in the 32nd century in season 3, the USS Discovery crew's one-of-a-kind spore drive has represented a potential replacement for dilithium-reliant warp travel in Star Trek 's future . However, various obstacles, most notably rogue Risan scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and his theft of the only working prototype have prevented the spore drive from being rolled out.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) reveals that Starfleet has shuttered further development on the spore drive . Starfleet's decision means that the USS Discovery will remain one-of-a-kind, making season 5 the last outing for Starfleet's spore drive. Instead of taking Discovery's spore drive further, Starfleet are instead forging ahead with the new pathway drive, first trialed by the USS Voyager-J in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 .

Star Trek Is Ditching Discovery's Spore Drive - And That's Good!

Uss voyager is why star trek is quitting discovery’s spore drive, voyager has a history of scientific advancement in starfleet..

In Star Trek: Discovery 's season 4 premiere, "Kobayashi Maru", it was revealed that the USS Voyager-J had been newly fitted with a protoype pathway drive . Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) was looking for the right captain to command the ship and test out this new technology. Now, Discovery 's season 5 premiere, "Red Directive" reveals that those tests were successful, leading to the pathway drive being the new standard for future Starfleet ships. The rollout is still in the early stages, however, as Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) states that his ship, the USS Antares, doesn't have a pathway drive fitted.

Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) was under consideration to command the USS Voyager-J, but President Rillak didn't believe that she was ready.

It feels appropriate that the USS Voyager is responsible for replacing Star Trek: Discovery 's spore drive, given its namesake's impact on warp travel centuries earlier . Star Trek: Prodigy revealed that, after returning to the Alpha Quadrant, much of the technology the USS Voyager encountered in the Delta Quadrant was adapted by Starfleet. For example, the USS Dauntless, commanded by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) had a quantum slipstream drive fitted, first encountered in Star Trek: Voyager 's season 4 finale, "Hope and Fear".

10 Ways USS Voyager Changed In Star Trek’s Delta Quadrant

When will we see star trek: discovery's pathway drive in action.

As the USS Discovery is in the middle of a vitally important mission to find the Progenitors' technology to create life, it doesn't seem like there will be much time for a refit. Therefore, it's unlikely that Discovery will be using the pathway drive at any point in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It's certainly possible that Captain Burnham could receive assistance from a starship like the USS Voyager-J at some later point in Discovery season 5, but it's also possible that the pathway drive was just a tease of things to come in the now- canceled Star Trek: Discovery season 6 .

As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will pick up the baton in the 32nd century, however, making it the most likely candidate for a pathway drive demonstration . As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive. As the cadets learn how a pathway drive works, and how it differs from a more traditional warp drive, so too will Star Trek fans who tune into the YA-oriented show. Starfleet Academy leading the way with a new warp drive replacement would be a fitting way to continue the legacy of Star Trek: Discovery and its spore drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is looking to begin production in late summer 2024.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

After being closed for over a hundred years, Starfleet Academy is reopening its doors to those who wish to pursue a career as Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a new group of cadets as they come of age, and build friendships, rivalries, and romantic relationships while being threatened by a new adversary that could destroy the Academy and the Federation itself.

Why Star Trek Keeping Standard Warp Travel Is Best

The specifics of how the pathway drive works are still a mystery in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's presumably rooted in traditional warp travel. The spore drive was an incredibly complicated method of travel that required specific calculations and a willing host to navigate the mycelial network . In "Red Directive", Stamets states that, with more time, he could have worked out the issues with navigation, but never got the chance. The grisly fate of the USS Glenn in Discovery season 1 revealed that the slightest miscalculation in spore drive navigation could have devastating consequences for the crew.

Presumably, the pathway drive is a means to achieve warp travel while using less dilithium, to reduce the Federation's reliance on it following the scarcity caused by the Burn. This is therefore a less risky proposition, which will be why Starfleet are now rolling it out following the USS Voyager-J's successful trial. While it may be disappointing for Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery , the pathway drive's potential to make warp travel safer and more sustainable should be something to celebrate.

Star Trek: Discovery streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 is streaming on Netflix.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek Voyager

The fifth entry in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Voyager, is a sci-fi series that sees the crew of the USS Voyager on a long journey back to their home after finding themselves stranded at the far ends of the Milky Way Galaxy. Led by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the series follows the crew as they embark through truly uncharted areas of space, with new species, friends, foes, and mysteries to solve as they wrestle with the politics of a crew in a situation they've never faced before.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

Hope returns —

Nasa knows what knocked voyager 1 offline, but it will take a while to fix, "engineers are optimistic they can find a way for the fds to operate normally.".

Stephen Clark - Apr 6, 2024 12:28 am UTC

A Voyager space probe in a clean room at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1977.

Engineers have determined why NASA's Voyager 1 probe has been transmitting gibberish for nearly five months, raising hopes of recovering humanity's most distant spacecraft.

Voyager 1, traveling outbound some 15 billion miles (24 billion km) from Earth, started beaming unreadable data down to ground controllers on November 14. For nearly four months, NASA knew Voyager 1 was still alive—it continued to broadcast a steady signal—but could not decipher anything it was saying.

Confirming their hypothesis, engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California confirmed a small portion of corrupted memory caused the problem. The faulty memory bank is located in Voyager 1's Flight Data System (FDS), one of three computers on the spacecraft. The FDS operates alongside a command-and-control central computer and another device overseeing attitude control and pointing.

The FDS duties include packaging Voyager 1's science and engineering data for relay to Earth through the craft's Telemetry Modulation Unit and radio transmitter. According to NASA, about 3 percent of the FDS memory has been corrupted, preventing the computer from carrying out normal operations.

Optimism growing

Suzanne Dodd, NASA's project manager for the twin Voyager probes, told Ars in February that this was one of the most serious problems the mission has ever faced. That is saying something because Voyager 1 and 2 are NASA's longest-lived spacecraft. They launched 16 days apart in 1977, and after flying by Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 is flying farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history. Voyager 2 is trailing Voyager 1 by about 2.5 billion miles, although the probes are heading out of the Solar System in different directions.

Normally, engineers would try to diagnose a spacecraft malfunction by analyzing data it sent back to Earth. They couldn't do that in this case because Voyager 1 has been transmitting data packages manifesting a repeating pattern of ones and zeros. Still, Voyager 1's ground team identified the FDS as the likely source of the problem.

The Flight Data Subsystem was an innovation in computing when it was developed five decades ago. It was the first computer on a spacecraft to use volatile memory. Most of NASA's missions operate with redundancy, so each Voyager spacecraft launched with two FDS computers. But the backup FDS on Voyager 1 failed in 1982.

Due to the Voyagers' age, engineers had to reference paper documents, memos, and blueprints to help understand the spacecraft's design details. After months of brainstorming and planning, teams at JPL uplinked a command in early March to prompt the spacecraft to send back a readout of the FDS memory.

The command worked, and Voyager1 responded with a signal different from the code it had been transmitting since November. After several weeks of meticulous examination of the new code, engineers pinpointed the location of the bad memory.

"The team suspects that a single chip responsible for storing part of the affected portion of the FDS memory isn’t working," NASA said in an update posted Thursday. "Engineers can’t determine with certainty what caused the issue. Two possibilities are that the chip could have been hit by an energetic particle from space or that it simply may have worn out after 46 years."

Voyager 1's distance from Earth complicates the troubleshooting effort. The one-way travel time for a radio signal to reach Voyager 1 from Earth is about 22.5 hours, meaning it takes roughly 45 hours for engineers on the ground to learn how the spacecraft responded to their commands.

NASA also must use its largest communications antennas to contact Voyager 1. These 230-foot-diameter (70-meter) antennas are in high demand by many other NASA spacecraft , so the Voyager team has to compete with other missions to secure time for troubleshooting. This means it will take time to get Voyager 1 back to normal operations.

"Although it may take weeks or months, engineers are optimistic they can find a way for the FDS to operate normally without the unusable memory hardware, which would enable Voyager 1 to begin returning science and engineering data again," NASA said.

Travel the world like an Airline Pilot.

London Heathrow Airport: The Ultimate 3-7 Hour LHR Layover Guide (by a pilot)

One of my favorite short layovers ever : London Heathrow (LHR). Amazing lounges, easy and efficient public transportation, and endless options to eat/sleep/dine/explore. You can always count on London being a great layover.

  • Should I leave Heathrow on a short layover ?
  • What is there do do inside Heathrow ?
  • What are the best lounges at LHR ?
  • Which lounges can I access ?
  • What is there to do close to Heathrow on a layover ?
  • Renting a car to explore London on a layover
  • Best tours to join on a short layover
  • How long does it take to get through security at Heathrow ?

As the busiest airport in the UK, Heathrow offers a vast array of international flights and fantastic connections on over 80 airlines. This means you will likely have the chance to try it out for yourself someday! But don’t worry – whether you have a 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 hour layover in London, there is a lot you can do to have fun.

As an airline pilot flying internationally from New York’s JFK airport , I normally layover in London multiple times per month . Here’s a little foreshadowing, if I haven’t made it obvious already: I love it. It’s an epic city.

And for those not looking to leave Heathrow airport, fret not – the lounges, restaurants, and terminals are world class . You just have to know where to go.

Wondering which suitcase to buy before your epic London layover? Here are 5 Suitcases Airline Pilots Use and Why You Need One .

Should I leave London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) on a short layover?

That depends. There are many factors in play:

  • Is it a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday? These are busy days and security lines will be longer.
  • Are there planned strikes by public transportation workers or taxi workers? These are usually announced ahead of time and cause massive delays.
  • Is the weather bad enough to create chaos with cancellations, delays, and rebookings?
  • Are you arriving on an international flight? Do you need a visa to enter UK territory? If so, going through customs may add time. (US passports are eligible for entry through fast-lane visa-free passport scanners, saving ample time)
  • Do you have bags to collect and check back in? Check-in lines could be long, though you can save time by checking them in at a transfer desk before exiting the secure zone.
  • Are you arriving at night? This may call for a short hotel layover instead of going out and exploring.
  • Do you have Priority Pass and less than 4 hours before your connecting flight? If so, it may make more sense to spend your layover at an excellent free lounge.

This summer is extremely busy, and airports and airlines are suffering from short staffing . Because of this, you can expect long lines at check-in, security, help desks, and more. Plan extra time for this.

What you can do inside London Heathrow International Airport on a layover

For those who prefer not to leave the airport, fret not – there’s a lot to do.

You have 6 terminals to chose from, each offering an array of restaurants, shops, and lounges. Many of these lounges offer free access for Priority Pass members , while others are reserved for business/first class fliers and members. Check below.

Some of the restaurants here are world class, and there’s everything from delicate sushi to fried chicken to feast one.

Many of the lounges have excellent wining and dining, showers, and even spas. The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse has a wonderful outdoor terrace, while the No1 Lounge has a separate TV Lounge room.

And if you really want to get some exercise, there’s miles of corridors and hallways to explore. If your terminal isn’t enough, it’s super easy to take a bus to another one, though you will likely have to pass through security again if you do.

Best LHR Lounges (and what you need to know first)

Most of the lounges at LHR Heathrow are excellent, and some are even world class. Take the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse for example, boasting everything from Peloton bikes to an outdoor terrace – with champagne and fine dining in between. I prefer it over even the flagship KLM Crowne Lounge in Amsterdam !

Priority Pass members can rejoice – there are several wonderful lounges included for free! The No1 Lounge , for example, features a spa, showers, movie theatre, and a very diverse bar. At this time, the showers are still not operating.

AmEx Platinum members have access to the world-renowned Centurion Lounge in Terminal 3, with top notch fare and a comfortable, but slightly cozy environment.

Lounges at LHR included with Priority Pass

The No1 Lounge Heathrow

As a benefit to Priority Pass members , Terminal 3 is home to both the Club Aspire Lounge and the No1 Lounge Heathrow complimentary. Both are excellent complimentary options.

Those transiting Terminal 5 can enjoy yet another excellent Club Aspire Lounge.

Lounges at LHR that allow purchase of a day pass

Unless you’re flying in business or first class, you might be worried about finding a nice lounge to relax in between flights. But luckily, most terminals at LHR have at least one lounge that allows purchasing of a day pass.

Here they are, with their respective prices (which may not be 100% up to date):

Terminal 2:

  • Plaza Premium Lounge (£40/3 hours, £65/6 hours)
  • Lufthansa Business Lounge ($74)
  • United Club ($59)

Terminal 3:

  • No1 Lounge (£36 online)
  • Club Aspire (£35 online)
  • American Airlines Lounge ($59, currently closed)

Terminal 5:

  • Club Aspire (£40 online)
  • Plaza Premium (£35/3 hours, £65/6 hours)

Exclusive airline lounges

Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, SkyTeam (T4), and United all have their own respective lounges. Most of these are reserved for business and first class passengers, but some offer paid options for those flying in economy or comfort.

There are typically also yearly options available for those who travel constantly (and always with the same airline(s).)

The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse in T3 is particularly worldly, offering multiple restaurants, peloton bikes, showers, a pool table area, and even an outdoor patio with epic views of LHR. Those flying business class on Virgin Atlantic and SkyTeam partners have access.

Catch some sleep at an LHR Day Room

Though there are no hotels inside the secure area at Heathrow Airport (which means you’ll have to exit and go through customs/security), there are some on or near the airport that offer day rooms.

Day rooms are my newest dangled “travel hack”, because there’s nothing more refreshing than catching up on rest and taking a shower between flights. They’re actually my biggest travel hack to beating jet lag .

The best day rooms around LHR include:

  • The Aerotel in T3 arrivals, which offers blocks of 3, 6, and 9 hours.
  • The Hilton Garden Inn Terminals 2 & 3 , step away from arrivals. Note there is another Hilton Garden Inn on Bath Road.
  • Next to Terminal 4, you can stay at the Heathrow Hilton or the Premier Inn just a touch further.
  • By Terminal 5, there’s a Sofitel connected by a covered walkway. The Sofitel is for sure the nicest Heathrow area hotel.
  • The Hilton Garden Inn , just steps from Hatton Cross, one stop away from Heathrow on the Picadilly line.

These hotels and many others offer shuttle service. My personal best way to snag a cheap room is on dayuse.com .

Going out and exploring on a short Heathrow layover

Even after having traveled to over 80 countries , I still have to contend that London is one of my favorite cities. And excellent public transport makes it one of the most accessible cities in the world, even on a short layover.

You have so many options on places to go and how to get to them – you can tailor your layover to any level of exploration. I’ve found that even after many, many layovers, London just does not get old. There’s always more to do.

So whether you see a lot or a little, you’ll be glad you did. Here are my recommendations on what to do during your London layover.

Getting to downtown London from LHR – quick!

Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, Harry Potter. Whatever your rhyme or reason is for visiting London, you’ll be glad to know there is a fantastically fast way to get downtown from LHR airport.

It’s namely the Heathrow Express , offering direct service to downtown with a journey time of about 15 minutes. Though it’s more expensive than the tube (metro/underground), I highly recommend it. The underground/tube often has delays and many stops, making it a much more tedious way to get to London from LHR.

Renting a car for the day and going more in depth

Though public transportation in London is excellent, you may prefer the flexibility of having your own car. This unlocks the ability to see even more of the area, including:

  • The Royal Observatory of Greenwich, located at the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude)
  • Oxford University and its Museum of Natural History
  • The Windsor Castle
  • The incredible Brooklands Museum, featuring everything from rockets to the Concorde
  • With more time, the coast of Brighton

In my experience, Hertz offers the most reliable and convenient rentals.

Just beware of parking downtown, which is mighty inconvenient and expensive.

Join a free (or cheap) guided tour of the city

London is easily one of the most walkable cities in the world. I would know – I’ve walked close to 100 miles around the city.

But to really learn about the history, culture, and hidden gems of the city, I highly recommend a guided tour – especially if you’re in a hurry.

Otherwise, here’s a sample itinerary I curated for your viewing pleasure:

Some of the sites you won’t want to miss include:

  • Buckingham Palace – you can even visit a State Room from 22 July to 2 October and some dates in winter! Changing the Guard, an amazing show, occurs most days at 10:45AM
  • Go shopping in the historic area of St. James.
  • Hit up Westminster Abbey . Don’t miss out on that giant clock tower they call Big Ben somewhere around there.
  • Visit Churchill’s War Rooms for a chilling and enlightening experience
  • Ride the London Eye for epic views of the city
  • Walk through SoHo and experience London’s most vibrant neighborhood
  • Tour the 900-year old Tower of London and learn about the medieval history of the city
  • Take an elevator to the top of the Tower Bridge
  • Head up the the observation deck at The Shard , that pointy building that rises high above the city skyline

Each of these sites is located near an Underground (Metro/Tube) station, and the order listed above is a good way to do it. Note that it would probably take an entire afternoon (4-6 hours at least) to see all of that in a hurry, so you’ll have to pick and choose.

Eat local, classic British fare

Fish n’ chips, a nice meat pie, bangers n’ mash, Shepherd’s Pie – all nice boring British food for you to try.

The Indian food is where it’s really at. Let’s bring the spice and the taste. There’s no lack of great Indian food here.

My favorite Indian place? Dishoom , a local favorite with several locations across town, is flabbergastingly good. Probably the best in London.

For a great fish n’ chips, the Mayfair Chippy is your spot. And for a local chain with fantastic fare, try The Ivy .

If you want to eat at one of Gordon Ramsay’s excellent dining experiences, make sure to book ahead.

And lastly, great coffee is everywhere. For a unique experience, try Attendant Coffee Roasters , situated in what used to be a Victorian public toilet.

Getting back to Heathrow on time for your next flight

In recent years, we’ve experienced unparalleled travel chaos . That meant dealing with travel disruptions such as delays, cancellations, late bags, and more.

Luckily, staffing is already better as of 2023 and it’s only improving from here.

That being said, you should still plan to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before any international flight and 1.5-2 hours before a domestic flight. Whether you use an Uber, rental car, the tube, or the Heathrow Express – always plan in extra time.

Best of luck with your London travel plans!
