Nespresso Nomad Travel Mug Review, Including How to Dismantle The Lid

Its gone viral on TikTok with its colored sleeve appealing to many but in this Nespresso Nomad travel mug review I dig into the details to find out whether its actually any good. You can also check out my review of the Nespresso Touch travel mug and a comparison of these 2 options from Nespresso . 

What We Like

• 100% Leak Proof: When the lid is closed I haven’t experienced any leaking at all. 
• Styling: It looks really nice though disappointing that Nespresso don’t sell additional color sleeves separately to change it up. 
• 360° Drinking: You can drink from any angle around the lid.
• 3 Size Options: Small 10oz (300ml), Medium 13.5oz (400ml), Large 18oz (540ml). 

What We Don't Like

• Lid Design: Lots more detail below, its the main weakness of this mug. 
• Width: It feels a little big in the hand which means its not the easiest to carry around. It is also slightly wider than the standard 3″ cupholder. The mug still fit ok in cars that I tried but be careful if your cup holder is on the smaller side.

Nespresso Nomad Travel Mug Specification

Nespresso nomad lid.

The lid of the Nomad travel mug is its main drawback. I’ll first explain how this lid functions and then come on to the issues it causes in my opinion. The lid opens and closes by pushing down on its centre. There is a spring action mechanism that you’re pushing down on to open and close. Once open, you can drink from any angle or position on the lid, it has a 360° opening. The lid has a deep curved inside running down to the opening, when you tip the mug to your mouth the coffee flows down this edge. 

Whilst I do like that you can drink from any angle, in my opinion this lid design has a number of issues:

• The use of a spring action causes a potential point of failure, if the spring action breaks or wears you won’t be able to drink through the lid. 
• The spring action and the way the lid is constructed make it really difficult to clean thoroughly, dirt and mould are going to build up in places that you cannot see or clean. 
• The curved edge that you drink from gets coffee over it and it can get quite messy looking compared to other mugs where coffee won’t get on the lid. If you wanted to carry this in your bag you might need to have something to wipe around the edge with.  
• You need to apply a fair amount of force to push down on the spring and open the lid, this works ok if the mug is sitting on a desk or in a cup holder but if you are standing or walking with the mug it gets a bit awkward. 

Can The Nespresso Nomad Travel Mug Go In The Dishwasher?

The Nespresso Nomad mug and lid are dishwasher safe, however see further details below for deep cleaning of the lid. 

To clean the body of the mug Nespresso advise removing the colored sleeve. The sleeve pulls off the body of the mug but it takes a bit of effort the first few times. I find that gripping the sleeve at the bottom of the U shape helps.

All in all this additional piece + the lid makes washing and drying quite cumbersome compared to simpler mugs.

You could use the mug without the plastic sleeve but it might affect the temperature retention and it picks up finger prints a lot. 

Nespresso Nomad Travel Mug Lid Disassembly

I’ve already mentioned that cleaning the lid of the Nomad mug is difficult. It is possible to dismantle the lid but even when taken apart there are still spots where you can’t really clean thoroughly. 

Taking the lid apart isn’t easy and it feels like you could break it doing this repeatedly. Nespresso don’t publish instructions for this so its not something they are suggesting to do.

Nespresso Nomad Travel Mug Lid Cleaning Steps

Step 1 :Start with the lid in closed position.

Step 2  :Turn the lid over and find something strong that will fit into the centre hole. I have a spoon handle which fits, something like a screwdriver would also work. 

Step 3 : Push down hard until the top disk of the lid pops off. You may need to apply a fair amount of force. This will allow you to clean the top disk throughly. 

Step 4: Turn the lid over and clean the area where the disk had been in place. 

Step 5: Use a small bottle brush or tooth brush to clean around the remainder of the lid interior as much as possible. I also soaked this part in hot soapy water for a couple of hours and brushed again. 

As you can see, even when the lid has been taken apart there are still places where it is difficult to clean and I would be concerned of bacteria gathering where you can’t clean properly.

To put the lid back together, turn it right side up and place the disk in place. Push down firmly on the disk until you hear a click. It usually takes a few attempts to get the disk in the right position so that it will click down, try twisting it around a bit. 

Temperature Retention

If you can get past the potential issues with the lid you might be wondering how the Nomad travel mug performs at keeping coffee hot or water cold. In my testing it performed well for both, though there are other medium sized mugs which do better. 

The Nespresso Nomad travel mug kept coffee hot (>120°F) for up to 5 hours and water cold for up to 11 hours in my testing.

As you can see the Nomad mug does ok and it likely will meet most people’s needs for an insulated mug. If you need something that will keep your coffee hot all day or for a long road trip then you should look at some of the other mugs we’ve tested.
