1. Cathedral of The Blessed Sacrament

Location : 1019 11th St, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Regarded as one of the most treasured historic sights in Sacramento, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is one of the major Sacramento landmarks . Located just a few blocks away from the Capitol building, the Cathedral is an active Roman Catholic church that holds masses in English, Spanish, and even Chinese. 5. Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park

Location : 800 N St, Sacramento, CA 95814. Hours : Monday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. Entrance fee : $5 for adults, $3 for ages between 17 and 6, free of charge under 5.

Mainly referred to as the Stanford Mansion, this Second Empire style0 architectural beauty is located in Sacramento’s California State Park. Now open to the public as a museum, the mansion serves as the state's official reception center for world leaders visiting California. Replete with Victorian finery, the museum is a perfect reflection of the grace and grandeur of the state’s history and definitely a Sacramento must-see . 6. California State Capitol

Aside from housing the California State Legislature’s chambers, the State Capitol functions as a museum and holds a wealth of historic archives as well as the historic offices of the governor and legislature. 7. Golden 1 Center

Homeland of the Nisenan people, Sutter's Fort State Historic Park was the economic center of the first permanent European colonial settlement in California's Central Valley. 9. The Ziggurat Building

Location : 707 3rd St, West Sacramento, CA 95605.

Designed by Sacramento architect, Edwin Kado, the Ziggurat is a pyramid-shaped 10-story building located in west Sacramento. With its eccentricity and foreign posture, the establishment is inspired by ancient Mesopotamian Ziggurats, making it a famous Sacramento landmark . 10. Old City Cemetery

Location : 1 000 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818. Hours : Everyday - 7am to 5pm.

This historic city Cemetery is the resting place of history’s most famous Californians and a place to visit and pay respects. Notable burials include Mayors, Generals, the founder/planner of the City of Sacramento, and even victims of historic cholera epidemics. The cemetery resembles that of a Victorian garden and offers various guided tours such as the rose tour, history tour, Halloween tour, and haunted tour.

11. Governer’s Mansion

Location : 1526 H St, Sacramento, CA 95814.

This Victorian mansion was the official residence of the governor of California. Built, in 1877, the Governer’s Mansion is a three-story thirty-room structure with Second Empire and Italianate styling. One of the top Sacramento landmarks , the mansion is now a famous tourist destination with an impeccable interior design. It is lavishly decorated with French glass mirrors and Italian marble floors, making it a definite must-see. Though it is now officially closed to the public, you can still view the majestic exterior as you tour the building.

Strike it rich on this California Gold Country road trip from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe

The California gold rush was one of the most exciting times in U.S. history, defined by prospectors, outlaws, and enterprising madams who journeyed to towns like Placerville, Folsom, and Sacramento with dreams of striking it rich.

Today, this history is preserved throughout California. On this California Gold Country road trip, you'll explore towns in Sacramento and El Dorado counties, stopping at museums, pop culture landmarks, and wineries, before ending in South Lake Tahoe.

Note: Although you can start and stop anywhere, budget at least two days to explore each town.

Rancho Cordova and Sacramento

Start your California Gold Country tour in Rancho Cordova. During the gold rush, the town was a significant supply stop between Sacramento and Folsom. It remains the ideal place to gear up for a road trip since there are dozens of shops, restaurants, and hotels in Rancho Cordova. (Most Rancho Cordova hotels are chains, so keep those loyalty numbers handy.) While you're here, check out the city's vibrant beer, wine, spirits, and mead scene in the Barrel District of Rancho Cordova .

A short distance away, visit historic gold rush buildings dating back to the mid-1800s in Old Sacramento. Today, these buildings hold shops, bars, restaurants, museums, and other tourist attractions. Top attractions include the Sacramento History Museum , the California State Railroad Museum , and a riverfront park with a carousel and waterfront Ferris wheel.

Where to stay in Rancho Cordova: The Courtyard Sacramento Rancho Cordova provides easy access to the freeway and the area's shops and restaurants.

Ten miles from Rancho Cordova, the Folsom Historic District bursts with gold rush-era architecture in upscale boutiques, eateries, coffee shops, inns, and museums. The town square offers a slice of California Gold Country with a historic train depot, turntable, and seasonal activities like gold panning and blacksmithing.

Folsom was founded in 1849 but didn't become a household name until 1955 when Johnny Cash released his single, "Folsom Prison Blues." The singer later recorded two shows and a live album here, cementing its status as one of the most famous penitentiaries in the world. Folsom still operates as a prison, and you can hike or bike past its walls on the wheel-chair accessible Johnny Cash Trail .

Where to stay in Folsom: Bradley House , a bed and breakfast in the middle of Folsom's historic district, is within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and The Square.

Placerville

Twenty-five miles away from the Folsom Historic District, Placerville blossomed from a mining camp to California's third-most populous city during the gold rush.

Today, Placerville is one of the best-preserved Gold Country towns in California. You can easily spend a day admiring the architecture and popping into museums, restaurants, and eclectic shops. Don't miss the El Dorado County Historical Museum , which features artifacts and life-sized displays to showcase the area's history.

The Gold Bug Park and Mine carries visitors on a journey back in time with a mining museum, blacksmithing demonstrations, gold panning, and a mine tour.

When it's time for lunch, stop by The Original Mels Diner , part of the nostalgic restaurant chain featured in movies like "American Graffiti" and the television series "Alice." After, head to Apple Hill , where you'll find lovely pastoral views and a collection of farms, orchards, and wineries.

Where to stay in Placerville: The gold rush-era Historic Cary House Hotel offers reasonably priced rooms within walking distance of museums, restaurants, and old-time saloons.

When you leave Placerville, drive 10 miles via Highway 49 to Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma. That's where the California gold rush ignited in 1848. At its peak, 10,000 people called this area home; today, Coloma only has about 200 year-round residents. Historic buildings include two churches, a tiny post office, a schoolhouse, and a blacksmith shop. There are also several replica buildings, including a sawmill and a cabin.

The Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park museum tells stories of the California gold rush through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and live events. Guided walking tours, gold-panning lessons, and a junior ranger program are among the most popular programs in the park.

Where to stay in Coloma: Coloma Resort offers accommodations for nearly every type of traveler. Guests can choose between campsites, cabins, or glamping options in tent or wagon villages.

South Lake Tahoe

End your California Gold Country road trip in South Lake Tahoe, about 70 miles from Coloma. The area exploded with commerce during the gold rush due to its prime location between the Comstock Lode in Virginia City and the Central Pacific Railroad near Truckee.

By the time the gold rush waned, many fortunes were made, and wealthy families began summering in Lake Tahoe. You can get a glimpse of what their lives were like at the Tallac Historic Site , a 74-acre lakefront property with three historic estates and the ruins of what was once advertised as "The Grandest Resort In The World."

From May through October, a free museum, special events, and tours of one of the residences are available. The property is free, open to the public year-round, and connects to beaches and hiking trails.

Where to stay in South Lake Tahoe: The century-old Camp Richardson Resort offers traditional hotel rooms, cabins, and campsites within a mile of the Tallac Historic Site.

Century-old building in downtown Sacramento could become hotel, restaurant. What’s next?

Developers want to transform a century-old bank building in downtown Sacramento into a new hotel and restaurant — but it’ll keep its ties to the city’s roots.

Hume Development filed an application in January to convert the seven-story Capital National Bank building at 700 J St. into a 107-room hotel, according to the city.

The corner building also goes by the address of 1007 Seventh St.

Located in the Merchant Street Historic District, the structure neighbors Golden 1 Center and Downtown Commons.

Initial blueprints for the hotel were created by architectural firm HRGA. The company is known for its work on local modern buildings, such as the Ice Box apartments and Hyatt Centric Hotel in downtown Sacramento.

The Capitol National Bank building is easily recognizable for its bronze-framed windows and granite exterior, adorned with terracotta figures on the sixth floor, HRGA said on its website.

“Having served as office space in recent years, the building could be another destination of downtown Sacramento, bridging the gap between past and present,” the firm said.

What is the Capital National Bank building?

The Capital National Bank building was constructed between 1915 and 1916.

In the 1900s, Seventh Street was Sacramento’s banking center, according to the Merchant Street Historic District plan.

“Grand banking halls designed by prominent local architects (lined) the street,” the plan said.

The former National Bank of D.O. Mills and Company stood at the northwest corner of J and 7th streets, diagonally to Capital National Bank, according to the plan.

Merchant’s National Bank was built on Seventh Street in 1921. It continues to operate at that site under the name Umpqua Bank, after being acquired by Columbia Banking System Inc. in 2021.

Rudolf A. Herold designed the Capital National Bank building, known for its intricate exterior style.

“The terracotta nudes ringing the sixth floor, referred to at the time as ‘modern heroic figures,’ were controversial at the time of the bank’s $250,000 construction in 1916,” according to Calisphere, a digital library with resources from across California.

Herold was also the architectural designer for Sacramento’s City Hall building and the Masonic Temple.

It was unclear Wednesday when Capital National Bank closed, or when the building space was leased out for offices .

The bank building was added to the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources in 1982.

What’s next for downtown Sacramento building?

If the proposal to convert the Capital National Bank building into a hotel is approved, most of the renovations will be inside the structure, HRGA said.

“By maintaining the exterior’s architectural authenticity and creatively repurposing interior spaces,” the firm said, “the project not only pays homage to Sacramento’s rich history but also introduces a unique blend of heritage and modern luxury to the heart of downtown.”

The renovations include creating 107 luxury hotel rooms on the second to seventh floors and a mezzanine level with a spa and meeting spaces.

The lobby entry will be facing Seventh Street.

The hotel will also feature a restaurant, banquet hall and fitness area adjacent to the lobby, according to building plans.

The city website shows that the project is currently in the application phase.

City officials, Hume Development and HRGA had not responded to requests for comment as of Wednesday afternoon.

The tour will commence on September 5, 2024 at Festival Lawn at Deer Lake Park in Vancouver, BC then continues across the U.S. and Canada through the fall.

Future & Metro to swing by Sacramento in September 2024 for "We Trust You" tour

SACRAMENTO – Future and Metro Boomin have announced the dates to their new "We Trust You Tour," and Sacramento will be one of the stops.

The new tour was announced on Tuesday. A total of 27 dates are on the list along with a Lollapalooza performance on Aug. 3.

No supporting acts have been revealed at this time.

Sacramento will have to wait until the later half of the tour to see Future & Metro, with the Golden 1 Center hosting them on Sept. 3.

Tickets for the tour go on presale for Cash App members on April 17, while general on-sale starts April 19.

Future and Metro Boomin will embark on a 27-date concert tour this summer.

The "We Trust You Tour" will make stops across the United States and Canada beginning Tuesday, July 30, in Kansas City.

The tour also features a festival performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The tour is scheduled to make a Sacramento stop at Golden 1 Center on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Tickets will be available starting with a Cash App Card presale  beginning Wednesday, April 17, followed by the general ticket sale at 10 a.m. Friday, April 19, at LiveNation.com .

New augmented reality walking tour reveals what Third Ward ghost signs used to look like

Mike Roe, the executive creative director for Milwaukee marketing agency Hoffman York , got interested in ghost signs when he noticed one outside his office window in the Third Ward, and then started noticing them everywhere in the neighborhood.

Ghost signs are faded advertisements that were painted on the outside of buildings decades ago, the remnants of which can still be seen.

"These signs were like the original out-of-home advertisements before TV, before social media, when you'd paint a big message on the side of your building to say, 'These are things we sell,'" Roe said. "And now it's like this art form of a part of history."

As his interest in the ghost signs grew, Roe started talking to people at the Historic Third Ward Association and learned about some of the factors that make the old, faded signs so prevalent in the Third Ward — including the fact that the area is a federally protected historic district and that it has a concentration of brick buildings built after a fire in 1892 destroyed hundreds of wooden buildings .

Roe wondered if there was a noninvasive way to preserve the signs before they completely fade away so people can see what they looked like in their glory days. With the help of augmented reality technology, he and some coworkers created a ghost sign tour of 13 signs on 10 buildings in the Third Ward. Now people can scan a QR code on a paper map or a mobile link, hold up their phone to a building, and see what the ghost sign used to look like.

Here's what Roe had to say about the tour and his fascination with ghost signs.

How did you learn what the ghost signs used to look like?

Most of the signs are now illegible so I had to find old photographs, some of them century-old. And when you look for those photos, they're usually of other things. So you're sifting through all these old photographs to try to catch these buildings in the background.

I found all these photos at the Milwaukee Public Library and the Milwaukee County Historical Society and the Wisconsin Historical Society . I've never had an excuse to really explore those places before, but whenever I would tell the staff there what I was looking to do, everyone was so friendly and excited and happy to help.

Once we found enough photos for reference, our designers and art directors re-created the signs. The augmented reality work was challenging because that type of technology works really well for closer stuff, like when you go to a furniture store website and they show you what your furniture would look like in your living room. But we were trying to use the technology on a much bigger scale, to show what something would look like on the side of a whole building. The developers used geolocation and got it worked out so when you use your phone to look at the side of the building, the sign will sit there and when you move, it stays anchored and doesn't float around.

What can people expect when they go on the tour?

People can go to the Historic Third Ward Association, 525 E. Chicago St., to get a copy of the map. We're also hoping to partner with other places in the Third Ward, like the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St., so people spending time in the Third Ward can pick up a map to either take a walking tour of the signs or use the mobile link ( augmentedhistory.org ) when they come across the buildings.

Then, as you come up to one of the buildings on the map, you use your phone to scan the QR code for that building, and hold up your phone to the ghost sign, and it will overlay the image of what the sign used to look like.

Will there be more ghost sign tours in the future?

What's great about having this tour in the Third Ward is, in addition to so many ghost signs, people can get something to eat, go to the shops and the galleries, spend some time walking around and have a fun adventure.

We've had kind of tunnel vision on creating this experience and making it live, and now, after doing a soft launch, we're realizing how many people are really enthusiastic about this. A lot of people have told me about their passion for this art form, so we'd love to feed that passion as much as we can. And I've noticed there are a lot of ghost signs in the Fifth Ward as well. A part of me would love to expand the tour, and I do love the idea of finding other ghost signs in Milwaukee.

How do you explain your fascination with ghost signs?

I would never have called myself a history buff, but there's something about these signs. I look at them and then when I see what they used to look like, I think about that company and what they used to sell and what it used to be like.

Like one of the buildings had these two Rex Chocolates signs, which was this big chocolate manufacturer. When I was researching them, I found magazine and newspaper articles about them, then on eBay, I found some of their old candy tins. I love to see that there was this whole experience, this whole brand that few people know about now that used to be this giant of Milwaukee industry.

I've got to watch out. It's definitely a rabbit hole.

We love boating and figured this would be a nice way to see the city. The boat is nice with a big, open deck and tables for 4-6 people to hang out. The DJ played good music but nobody was dancing. Drink prices were average for a big city. However, it wasn't a very scenic cruise. You mostly just see trees, parks, some marinas, and a lot of homeless camps along the river. It's a nice view of the Tower Bridge, but that's about all there is to see. We still enjoyed ourselves, but don't waste your money if you're not into boats or super excited about the bridge. We have taken some six of these Hornblower Cruises all over America (Alaska, San Diego - couple of times, Niagara Falls, San Francisco, etc.). The boat was nice, but we had to stand for the entire trip as all the tables & chairs on the upper deck were taken very quickly. Was a little surprised by the lack of seating based on our other experiences with Hornblower. All went great otherwise. The narrator was a BLAST. This college-age young man (whose name escapes me right now) was excellent with a dry wit my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. I gave him a tip as we exited the boat. If you think about going on this trip, DO IT! You will learn new things about Old Sacramento, the rivers and see the Capital City from a new angle. Read more Written July 6, 2019

We got on the boat at the posted time and went upstairs to the bar and shared a table that could accommodate four chairs (grab them quick because there aren't enough chairs for everyone to sit). The bar service went surprisingly quickly and the DJ music got everyone up and dancing pretty quickly. It was dark, so not a whole lot to see on shore, but we were more interested in talking and dancing anyway. We would recommend for any age group over 21. A very fun evening! Seating on the top deck is limited but not a problem if not busy, as it was when we visited. Entertaining and informative commentary during the trip. Music very top 40 but dancing was allowed. This is a 21 and over cruise. Set outside and enjoyed the river and beautiful sunset. No air conditioners, but the night breeze kept us cool. Old Sac After Hours tours depart from the Sacramento History Museum, 101 I Street in Old Sacramento. This half-mile guided historical walking tour lasts about 90 minutes and visits areas with uneven surfaces and low ceilings. The tour is ADA compliant and can accommodate up to 15 people.

Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to pick up your tickets at the front desk of the museum. Tours depart from the museum precisely on time.

Tours run rain or shine – please dress for the weather, and we recommend comfortable, closed-toe shoes for the uneven terrain of the tour.

Please note: Photography is not allowed in the Underground spaces.

Metered parking can be found on the streets of Old Sacramento or in the Old Sacramento Parking Garage on 2nd and I streets.

Please note, when events are occurring downtown, at the Golden One Center, or at Raley Field, parking can be sparse in Old Sacramento. Please leave extra time to find parking if taking a tour on an event day.

Old Sac After Hours Schedule:

Friday and Saturday evenings at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $30 per person, and guests must be 18 or older. We recommend making reservations early, because tours can sell out quickly. We cannot refund or exchange tickets, unfortunately.
