the guided tours

Leaving home and exploring a new city or region can be a bit daunting at times. Budgetary, work, and family obligations also mean that most people have a limited amount of time to travel. So how can we explore the best of the best without wasting time lost in tourist traps and empty streets?

One simple answer is by using a high-quality guided tour company. The companies on the list below were all chosen by TravelAwaits readers because they do exactly what good tours ought to do: help visitors truly experience their chosen destination.

1. ToursByLocals (Winner)

The winner for the category of guided tour companies is ToursByLocals , a Vancouver-based organization with 4,831 guides in 187 countries. The sheer scale of the expansive network of carefully curated guides means that curious travelers can find experts just about anywhere in the world.

While lots of the tours available in popular cities are general sightseeing outings, there are plenty of tours that are based around specific interests; for example, music fans visiting London can try out the London Rocks Music Tour and literary travelers can explore Paris on the Paris & the Lost Generation in the 1920s . Regardless of the tour, visitors can trust ToursByLocals’ hand-picked tour guides to show the absolute best of their cities.

2. Free Tours By Foot

As you may have guessed, Free Tours By Foot is a company that offers free walking tours. The organization is built around the pay-what-you-like concept, meaning that while the tours are free, you are able to pay the guide based on your experience. The tours are perfect for education and entertainment-oriented audiences.

Some examples of walking tours include the Beacon Hill Crime Tour in Boston, Glasgow’s Dark and Mysterious Past tour, or one of the countless free tours in Rome . The organization offers more options in pedestrian-friendly cities, but there is still a solid variety of choices in North America, Europe, and the Middle East with a few options in Oceania, India, and Asia.

3. Withlocals

One of the best ways to get to know the authentic side of a city is by visiting a friend or family member who lives there. The next best thing is Withlocals , a service that connects adventurous travelers with local residents who are passionate about their hometowns.

The broader strokes of tours are based on your interests, but you can customize your tour by communicating with your host in advance. The tours are completely private, which helps facilitate a connection between you and your local guide. Finally, with exciting destinations like Istanbul , Ho Chi Minh City , and Berlin , you can’t go wrong.

4. The Roman Guy Tours

While The Roman Guy Tours ’ name may imply that the company only operates in Rome, that is just the beginning. The company’s founder started out offering tours in Italy, but his touring philosophy was so popular with travelers that the business spread across Europe.

The Roman Guy’s “travel mantra” is based on traveling with people you care about, picking wonderful destinations, and joining interesting activities. The company also seeks to offer unique experiences that can’t be had elsewhere (e.g. night visits, accessing restricted areas, etc).

5. Secret Food Tours

The outings organized by Secret Food Tours combine local expertise with a passion for good food. Given the ever-changing nature of the restaurant world, it’s a perfect match. Looks can be deceiving, so tasting a new city with a local can ensure a positive culinary experience.

Secret Food Tours provides services across the globe, though travelers will find they have the best luck with the company when visiting capital cities. The people who manage Secret Food Tours also run Secret Tours , a branch of the business that focuses on the historical and cultural sides of cities.

6. Eating Europe

Eating Europe narrows the focus of its tours to one continent, but that still leaves hungry travelers with plenty of options. With carefully selected guides in Paris, Rome, Lisbon, Prague, and other cities, the company promises that its guests will create lasting memories by sampling the best food in town.

One of the main benefits of touring with Eating Europe is being guided into the less touristy, more authentic neighborhoods of your chosen city. This company also places an emphasis on learning about the food in context rather than simply leading guests on a quick walk between destinations.

7. Heritage Inspirations, LLC

For an in-depth exploration of New Mexico, TravelAwaits readers turn to Heritage Inspirations . This smaller, boutique guide service is focused on an artistic, cultural, human, and nature-focused approach to travel.

Whether you prefer sunrise yoga overlooking the Rio Grande Gorge, participating in a hands-on baking experience at a local Puebloan home , or delving into the topography and history of the Chaco Canyon , you’ll find an elevated travel experience with Heritage Inspirations.

8. Best Of France Tours

As one of the most popular destinations in the world, France is brimming with tour options, and according to TravelAwaits readers, Best of France Tours delivers on its eponymous promise. These luxurious tours within and near Paris are expertly led by professional guides who offer their own unique perspective on art, history, culture, and food.

Guests can get an insider look at the Louvre or Musée d’Orsay from an art historian, taste Champagne in the countryside with locals, or stop by the Palace of Versailles. Adjustments and accommodations can be made to itineraries based on the preferences of the travel group.

9. Fat Tire Tours

Fat Tire Tours assures potential guests that they take care of the details so that travelers can focus on having fun, memorable experiences. While the company began with bicycle tours, they have since expanded to walking and Segway tours.

Fat Tire’s mission is to provide tourists with fun experiences, but they also try to help preserve their host environments through a focus on sustainable travel practices. Popular examples of tours include a beer-tasting pub crawl in London’s West End and a VIP cathedral and rooftop tour in Florence.

Taipei City, Taiwan

10. Intrepid Urban Adventures

It can be hard to get a sense of a city in a short amount of time, but Intrepid Urban Adventures has set the ambitious goal of providing travelers with a deep dive into the hidden gems of a city in just a day. To narrow down the options, this company offers themes like active adventures, social impact, and off-the-beaten-path.

From Boston to Bali and Toronto to Taipai, Intrepid Urban Adventures helps the curious escape from the same old landmarks to find exciting, out-of-the-ordinary experiences. By taking care of all of the logistics, the company also ensures that guests can focus on the fun of the destination rather than how to read the bus schedule.

9 Reasons to Choose a Guided Tour

Splendors of Egypt

A guided trip is a convenient and refreshing way to discover and immerse yourself in a new destination. All the trip details are already organized for you, and there’s a team to support you every step of the way. This allows you to get the most out of your travels without the hassle of planning transport, accommodations, and other logistics leaving you with time and energy to be fully present and appreciate the places and people you are visiting.

First thing first. When you book a tour with us, here’s what’s included:

  • Round-trip Airfare – Except for our U.S. and Canada tours, you can book our group flight departing from the U.S. You may also choose to travel on a “tour only” basis to book your own airfare and meet the group at the destination.
  • Transportation – Travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned motor coach with a professional driver. In-destination airport transfers (when joining the group flight), additional flights, and other required transportation are always included.
  • Accommodations – All overnight stays are reserved in conveniently-located, first-class hotels.
  • Many Meals – Enjoy daily breakfasts as well as select lunches and dinners. We often leave a few meals open for you to go out and choose your own culinary adventure.
  • Sightseeing Tours – Admissions and reservations to the destination’s top highlights are all taken care of before you depart.
  • Tour Director – A professional, English-speaking local tour guide is with you throughout the entire trip. These passionate individuals, a local from the destination you’re visiting, elevate our tours making them truly unforgettable experiences.

There are many reasons why signing up for a guided tour makes more sense than trying to go it alone. It’s helpful to understand what to expect. Read on as we unpack nine reasons you should choose a guided tour!

Wonders of Israel

Convenience

Spend less time planning and more time exploring.

The great thing about a guided tour is that all the work is done for you. Our goal is for you to be whole-heartedly invested in your experience-which means the less you have to worry about, the better your trip will be. That’s where we come in; we combine all the components that make up the perfect trip, from hand-picked accommodations and comfortable transportation to the best sightseeing and experiences. No researching and booking multiple hotels, worrying about check-in times, or concerns about what transportation is best. And no wandering around aimlessly trying to get your bearings or waiting in long lines for tickets. Our well-organized itineraries make sure you see all the best sites and hidden gems with free time mixed in too.

Treasures of Turkey

We know what’s best!

Our group of travel experts work hard to put together guided tour packages that tick all the boxes for a perfect vacation. Years of experience and connections around the globe make it possible for us to create itineraries that are well paced, educational, and include the ideal mix of iconic sites, hidden gems, and leisure time to explore independently.

We know how to minimize long travel days, ensure the pacing aligns best with the destination, find special tours you might not find yourself, and so much more. When we do the planning, you won’t waste a single movement of your trip!

Heart of France

Our professional team of local guides and tour leaders enhance your adventure!

The benefits of traveling with an expert guide are arguably the best part of this touring style. The number one thing we hear from our travelers is how much they loved their guide and what they brought to the trip. It’s one of the reasons we see our guests return over and over again because it’s hard to go back to traveling on your own after you’ve experienced it.

It takes a special kind of person to be a tour guide. Ours are friendly, engaging, and passionate individuals who are there for you every step of the way. They speak English as well as the local language and are an invaluable resource that gives advice on everything and anything. They will share tips about what to do in your free time, show you the best restaurants and shopping in the area, and provide other helpful information. Tour guides are a wealth of knowledge and are happy to answer all your questions. They’ll do everything they can to ensure you have the very best experience when in their care.

While your local tour guide is along for the whole trip, you’ll also have the opportunity to interact with local guides throughout the tour. On these occasions, the guides will provide specialized information about the specific city or site you’re visiting.

Don’t forget about your driver! While you’re relaxing in the air-conditioned motorcoach as you travel between cities, your experienced and vetted driver will be at the wheel. They’ll know how to navigate the roads, how to avoid traffic, and where to park to get you to all your sites safely and on time.

Kenya Wildlife Safari

Participating in group travel opens up more opportunities!

Guided group tours cover the most exciting and interesting sights in a time-efficient manner. Tickets and visit times are pre-arranged, eliminating long waits or the chance of something selling out. We’re also able to secure entrance to places that can be difficult to confirm on your own, set up immersive interactions that connect you with local communities, and get access to special experiences that might not be offered to everyone.

Jewels of the Adriatic

Cultural Immersion

Get first-hand knowledge of the destination’s customs, traditions, and people.

Many of our itineraries include visits to family homes or small businesses where you can meet and talk with locals beyond the usual traveler interactions with hotel personnel, restaurant servers, and other travelers. On our guided group tour of Italy with Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast , for example, you get the opportunity to stop at local wine and food spots to learn more about the cuisine and culture. This provides a more authentic experience than traveling on your own.

Also, tour guides will often give you personal insights about themselves. How they live, their religion and beliefs, what they do for fun, and other experiences they’ve had. You can learn a lot about the local culture by talking to your tour guide.

Amazing Thailand

Companionship

A great way to meet others.

While we ensure that our group sizes are never too large, there is something special about traveling with other people that have mutual interests. Whether you’re traveling solo, with a spouse, other family members, or with friends, you’ll get to enjoy the company of others that are sharing the same experience as you. Our guests have forged life-long friendships with their groupmates, many even traveling together again on their next trip!

Majestic Morocco

A full team of travel experts with you every step of the way!

From the first time you call to returning home from your trip, we are here to help you through every part of your journey. We’ll answer questions before you book and provide information as your tour is approaching, including visa and other entry requirements. And during your trip, not only do you have a professional guide with you, but we also have partners on the ground and an entire team located in the U.S. that’s ready to assist. The peace of mind you get from having round-the-clock support makes the trip even more enjoyable!

Southwest National Parks Adventure

We negotiate the best rates for you to get the most value out of your package!

Our team is able to secure group deals on flights, lodging, meals, admissions, and more and package them together, creating incredible savings for you! Guided trips save you money and provide the best value for the most inclusions without sacrificing quality. You can see the most incredible sights and have the best time without worrying about breaking the bank- what’s better than that?

Majestic Morocco

Someone always has your back!

Guided tours are a safer way to travel than exploring on your own. We carefully vet our hotels and itineraries with safety in mind. Tour guides are fluent in the local language and are trained to problem-solve in difficult situations, including medical emergencies. Having them around is extremely beneficial should things not go as expected. When you travel with a group, you have peace of mind knowing you’re under the care of people who know what they’re doing.

Ready to join a group tour?

If you want to take the hassle out of planning and stop worrying about the safety and logistics of your trip, then signing up for a guided tour is a great choice. The comfort and ease of having everything organized for you add to the already incredible value a group tour offers. Plus, the extra support and experience of a guide, and the chance to travel with and meet like-minded people, make a guided group tour even more special. Join us and experience it for yourself!

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

The trip has been a fantastic experience. Very well organized and with a perfect itinerary to visit the most important national parks. Our guide, Haley, exuded enthusiasm, was always very close and friendly and was very attentive and solicitous, at all times, to the needs of the group. Luckily, the four of us were able to do the tour alone (we were with our family) and everything was very easy. We believe, however, that it is not very appropriate to charge a supplement for meals (some sandwiches that, necessarily, were repeated day after day). We also miss some more precise cultural information about the history and characteristics of the places visited. Likewise, we believe that the price is very high and that, therefore, the breakfasts of two of the hotels should also be included, strangely excluded unlike the others. That being said, the Tour is wonderful and well worth it.

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas

Mighty Five is an excellent tour for the money. Our guide, Vicky, was knowledgeable, accommodating and as sweet as the pie we enjoyed at Capital Reef. We had a wonderfully magical experience in each park and a small friendly group. The walking/hiking activities are optional and for all levels of fitness. Transportation was comfortable, but often long, so be prepared. Hotels/motels were clean and convenient, and can be far from good options. Moab was the only stop with numerous food options. My advice would be to find a market and purchase some portable emergency food if you need it. All motels have microwaves and refrigerators. Lastly, tip your guide well, at least $25 per day, and if you are a couple that means each!

Newfoundland & Labrador Tour

Newfoundland & Labrador

Loved the scenery. Local guides were good. Food was ok considering the areas we were in. Accommodations were ok considering where we were. The guide was terrible , we thought we were the only ones to feel that way until the last day. The guide flew out before everyone else and all the people we talked to on the trip felt the same way my wife and I felt, that the guide was arrogant, disorganized and lacked knowledge of the area. When asked questions she rarely knew the answers, bot promised to find them and never did. We will never book another globus tour.

Reviews of Fully Guided Tours in North America

We thoroughly enjoyed the 7-day tour of the US southwest . We love the destinations included in the tour, every place we visited is on our bucket list. I wanted to pinch myself every day that I visited those iconic and beautiful places as shown in my photos below. We enjoyed all the extra, optional experiences that were suggested by the tour guide. They added more fun to the tour. The Hummer tour in Moab, Utah was one of the optional experiences and it was a blast! Not only it’s fun, you get to see the amazing scenery during the sunset. One previous review mentioned he or she was forced to participate in the Navajo taco dinner in Monument Valley. That comment is not true. You have a choice not to do that and the guide can make a different arrangement for you. The optional Navajo taco dinner is one of the highlights of the tour that we will remember for a long time. It would be a shame not to have this cultural experience when you get to meet Navajo people when you are in the Navajo Nation! Our tour guide, John did a fantastic job. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. He kept the tour well organized and always provided information we needed. We highly recommend the tour.
the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!
This trip was the best experience of my life so far! My CEO Melanie was so amazing, I felt so at ease and happy throughout every step of the tour. This is the perfect trip to see some of Canada. 100000/10 would recommend to everyone!

Nature-Led: Yosemite Guided Tours & Experiences

Covering 1,463 square miles, the rugged beauty of Mariposa County calls out for exploration. From the ethereal loop of Yosemite Valley’s waterfalls to eBiking the county’s labyrinth of fire roads, and from moonlit train rides to learning how to rock climb Yosemite’s signature granite, countless experiences await. Yet “knowing the ropes” can be a tricky proposition.  A tried & true approach? Booking a Yosemite guided tour and letting a local outfitter lead the way.

Why A Guided Tour?

Taking advantage of a local guide can result in a transformative experience where culture, history, and adventure come together seamlessly, and where “inside” knowledge of Yosemite Mariposa County’s great outdoors makes for a nature-led trip to remember. Here are the top reasons why a Yosemite guided tour makes sense.

Group of people surrounding a Yosemite Conservancy Outdoor Adventures tour leader

  • Tours cover a range of interests from sightseeing iconic landmarks to fishing and photography, and from wildlife viewing to history and wine tasting.
  • Tours cover a range of physical abilities and fitness levels from riding in the comfort of a temperature-controlled vehicle to weeklong backpacking trips into the Yosemite backcountry.
  • Some tours are ADA-approved, some are kid-friendly, and others welcome pets.
  • Tours are available year-round, with some taking advantage of seasonal conditions such as whitewater rafting in spring and guided snowshoe hikes in winter.
  • Costs range from value to luxury, meaning there’s always an option that fits your budget.
  • Many operators will work with you to customize a private tour for individuals or groups based on your specific interests.
  • Some tours provide add-ons such as free lunches, admission into Yosemite National Park, backcountry permits, and gear for use or rent.
  • For driving tours, there’s nothing better than letting someone else take the wheel so you can enjoy the sights uninterrupted.

Classic Tours

Yosemite Valley Floor Tour

It’s impossible to go wrong when touring Yosemite National Park, but there are always a few perennial favorites. The Yosemite Valley Floor Tour is a two-hour highlight reel of the Park’s geologic marvels, bouncy wildlife, and rich history. Led by park rangers and well-versed naturalists, the guided tour is available year-round via open-air tram in summer and heated motor coach with panoramic windows in winter.

Hiking & Backpacking Tours

Backpacker looking out over granite domes near Clouds Rest

There’s nothing like those first steps on a Yosemite trail. And having a trusted guide lead the way only makes the experience richer. YExplore Yosemite Adventures offers guided day hikes based on difficulty level (easy to strenuous), and backpacking tours from 2-6 days. Perfect for creating a new chapter in your backcountry backstory.

For outdoor empowerment, the guide-owned Echo Adventures Cooperative offers a variety of Yosemite adventures from sightseeing to summit hiking tours and fishing tours. EAC takes a socially and environmentally sustainable approach while providing gear, transportation, entrance fees, and most important of all — knowledgeable guides. Custom lunches are available for vegan/gluten-free guests.

Thrill-Seeking Tours

Yosemite Mountaineering School climbing guide and her client

Where there are rocks, there are rock climbers. For epic granite-top adventures, the world-renowned Yosemite Mountaineering School & Guide Service has been teaching visitors how to climb since 1969 with group and private classes. Whether you’re ready to graduate to the big walls such as El Capitan or want to start small, this Yosemite Valley institution has you securely clipped and ready to scale. For everything from gym-to-crag to multi-pitch and family climbs, Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides (SYMG) has been operating since 1991 and was voted one of the “Best Outfitters On Earth” by National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

The ultimate in thrill-seeking tours, Skydive Yosemite offers tandem jumps with licensed & experienced pros from 10K, 12K, and 14K feet while providing stunning views of the Sierra crest as well as Yosemite icons El Captain and Half Dome.

Skydiver and skydiving instructor

For an airborne experience that keeps the heart rate a bit more steady, Airborrn Aviation Services takes guests up in their Cessna, “Joy”, to soar above the Park’s signature landmarks. Tours are available for 1-3 passengers (520 lbs combined max) and can be booked for sunrise & sundown for a magic hour unlike any other.

With the Merced River gracefully weaving through Yosemite Valley and then plunging the westward slope of the Sierra, Yosemite whitewater rafting is a spring rite of passage for thrill-seekers worldwide.  Several licensed tour operators offer a range of packages from half to full-day trips, with lunches and gear provided. For many these tours are life-changing, and a highlight of their Yosemite experience.

Unique Tours

Ride a steam train at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

In keeping with Mariposa County’s independent spirit, its unique tours are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

For a pedal assist that’s good for the environment, Yosemite E-biking is the perfect alternative to car touring as you explore Mariposa, the gateway to Yosemite. From the laid-back streets of downtown to the surrounding Gold Rush history, and from exploring its many fire roads to rock climbing some classic Sierra granite, the tour possibilities are endless. All ages & experience levels are welcome!

Trains have played an important role in Yosemite’s history so it makes sense that visitors can ride the rails in style at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad . Located 2 miles from historic Fish Camp and the Southern Entrance to Yosemite National Park, the open-air cars are pulled by a vintage Shay steam engine as you weave through the forest and hear stories of the region’s colorful past.  Tours range from the one-hour “Logger” to the “Moonlight Special” — a ride under the stars that features dinner and campfire sing-a-long. Oh, and friendly dogs ride free!

Tours Departing From San Francisco & Los Angeles

People doing yoga at Taft Point, a Yosemite scenic overlook

For visitors who’d rather not arrange a car rental or drive unfamiliar roads, several operators provide Yosemite guided tours departing from California’s major cities.

Incredible Adventures departs from San Francisco and offers day and overnight tours that range from Yosemite Valley’s greatest hits to walking among giant sequoias and winter escapes.  Extranomical Yosemite Tours picks guests up from most SF hotels and provides audio translations into eight different languages. Day trips and overnights are available, with accommodations at leading Mariposa County properties.

Serving Los Angeles, California Pacific Excursions gets eco-friendly with its Amtrak train and YARTS bus combo tour, as well as offering bus tours and private charters. Trips from 1 to 3 nights are available, not to mention one-way trips if your travel plans carry you on to forward destinations.

Yosemite Guided Tours: Where to Stay

The main lodge at Tenaya at Yosemite

Choosing where to stay while enjoying a Yosemite guided tour is an exercise in reverse engineering. Figure out your meeting spot for the tour, how you’ll get there from the property, and of course if the accommodations reflect your personal Sierra style. Some hotels such as Tenaya at Yosemite provide their excursions, while some tours offer ground transportation to/from where you’re staying. Be sure to ask your tour operator, and enjoy your stay in Yosemite Mariposa County!

Journey With Confidence

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Murals & Wall Art in Tucson

The old and the new through awe-inspiring murals.

As a historic Old West town, Tucson, AZ, is overflowing with stories. As a modern western city, new stories come to life every day. Combining this old with the new, you can find these narratives told through stunning murals throughout the city. Whether driving around Tucson to enjoy these outdoor art exhibits or scheduling a guided bike tour to experience some of the best murals Tucson has to offer, this captivating street art will amaze.

Explore the City of Tucson's Mural Map at  muralmap.tucsonaz.gov

Dreamlike bike rides.

Joe Pagac  is undoubtedly one of Tucson’s most prolific muralists. Located at Sixth Street and Stone Avenue, covering over 4,000 square feet, his larger-than-life “Epic Rides” features a western couple riding bicycles with a javelina, a tortoise, and a jackalope trailing close behind, also having a blast on bikes.

Find another must-see Pagac mural on the corner of Campbell Avenue and Grant Road. The “Sky Islands (Whale Mural)” features giant whales swimming through the sunset over a  Sonoran Desert  landscape.

Colorful Mural spanning between two buildings. Male and Female on bikes riding into blue sky. Woman's dress flows behind and transform into sunset desert landscape. A javelina, tortoise, and jack rabbit on bikes follow behind couple

Surreal Upgrades

Another Tucson muralist upgrading our city landscape is  Rock Martinez . His “Goddess of Agave” piece features a colorful depiction of the goddess and is one of the most celebrated murals in town. This hypnotic mural covers a 50 by a 54-foot wall of the historic Warehouse and Transfer building at 100 East 6th St.

For another dose of Martinez’s work, head a few blocks over to Sky Bar, located at 536 N. 4th Ave. There you’ll find “Crested Eclipse,” a mural covering the long back wall of the music venue and bar. “Crested Eclipse” is another surreal piece with a young woman with arms extended, saguaro and other cacti growing from her hair and butterflies, and a twilight eclipse in the background.

Outside wall of "Tucson Warehouse & Transfer Co". Large mural of a woman's face and shoulders with an agave plant crown. Colorful desert cacti surround the base to frame her.

Expanded Imagination

Also, conveniently located at 411 N. 4th Ave, you'll find a  Jessica Gonzales  mural painted on the parking lot wall of Antigone Books. The piece “Imagination Navigation Sonoran Sea” displays the way books encourage us to use our imagination as the mural's subject reads a book that comes alive across this stunning mural.

There are many Gonzales murals to discover. We suggest hitting up  The Loft Cinema  at 3233 E. Speedway Blvd to marvel at her giant piece on the theater's side. It features a woman staring up at presumably a screen with her many hands in various positions showing different emotions, much like one does when watching an exciting film.

Close Up Photo of a colorful mural. A young girl is observing fantasy sea-life bursting from an open book in an aquatic themed mural.

Keep the Murals Coming

Next, head over to  downtown's   Congress Street District  to the historic Lewis Hotel building at 178 E Broadway Blvd. Fin DAC's piece “Vergiss” presents a mysterious female subject with red painted around penetrating eyes and hands appearing in prayer or concern. The tattoo on her arm reads “Forget Me Not,” which beautifully contradicts the mural's title, which is the German word for “forget.”   While in the Congress Street District, don't miss Ignacio Garcia's “Running of the Piñatas” mural, located at Sixth Avenue and Congress Street next to Donut Bar. This large mural depicts a boy running from four piñatas, apparently seeking vengeance. The highly imaginative scene will surely bring a smile to your face.    No Tucson mural art list is complete without the work of  Danny Martin . Swing by the live music venue,  191 Toole , located at 191 Toole Ave, to experience his massive mural tribute to famed Tucson painter, the late  Ted DeGrazia .

Ask a Tour Guide: What Surprises First-Time Tour Travelers?

U ntil you go on a tour, it can be hard to imagine what it’s really like. That was definitely the case for me: Before my first multi-day guided tour, I had certain ideas of what it would be like (not all of which were flattering). But each day brought new surprises, and made me appreciate the many strengths and delights of guided travel.

BEST OF THE BEST: Best Tour Companies for Guided Tours

Tour guides are a big part of making this magic. And since they work with hundreds of first-time tour travelers every year, I checked in with a few to see what sorts of things tend to surprise first-timers most. Here’s what they said.

It’s Easy to Make Friends

“Sometimes solo travelers who are new to group tours are a bit anxious about fitting in with the others—they don’t realize they’ve got newfound friends who are just waiting to be met, and they’ve already got something in common—a love of travel! I also find that many guests who’ve mostly traveled independently are nervous about having to follow a schedule or stick with the group – and they end up loving that someone else has handled all the organization and that there is always company to be had.” – Trafalgar Tours Director Pamela Russo

There Are Unexpected Perks

“Many of my guests on their first Globus tour would comment on how surprised they were to feel so connected to the places that they visited.  They would arrive on tour thinking that we would just visit the “must do” locations, which of course we did, but the guests loved that we often had local guides at our stops who added so much value to their visit as well as the tour director who took the time to tell the stories behind these locations that helped make them come to life.”  -Derek Lundgren, Globus

Flexibility is Built In

“I think people who have never been before are surprised by how dynamic expedition cruising can be. I find a lot of people come in anticipating the exact itinerary, but by the end they realize that when there are changes, it’s to add to the overall experience. By the time they get off, they realize you can feel so safe (changes are mostly made to make room for special experiences, to adjust for weather, and for the sake of safety) and looked after while having remarkable experiences. You get more out of the changes, not less.” – Shayne Sanders, Lindblad Expeditions

SOLO TRAVEL TOGETHER: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travel

It Frees You Up to Enjoy the Destination

“I find my guests are most surprised by how much of a mental load a tour takes off them. When the big choices are made (what we should see it) and the logistics are covered, it frees up so much time and energy to more fully immerse yourself in a place. You’re only there one time in your life, you should be able to devote yourself to it, rather than the parking, the car rental, the wayfinding, etc.” – Backroads Trip Expert Joey Coe

WALK THE WORLD: Best Walking, and Trekking, and Hiking Tours

How Relaxing It Can Be

“I’ve been an Adventure Guide with Adventures by Disney for 10 years, and one of the most common phrases I hear is, ‘This has been the most relaxing and adventurous vacation of our lives! We can’t wait to book our next trip!’ One of the many things I love about Adventures by Disney is the insider access and VIP treatment we provide for our guests across all of our itineraries. Traveling with Adventures by Disney truly feels like having a Disney Parks Lightning Lane pass around the world! ” – Adventures by Disney Adventure Guide Byron Allen

The VIP Perks (Like Skipping Long Lines)

“The most surprising to first-time tour guests is that wherever we arrive it’s magically our turn. Like when we get to Venice, the transition from coach to the water taxi and then to gondola is so swift, that I see my guests in an awestruck trance during their VIP experience gliding along the grand canal. With the many things that fate can throw our way, guests often remark that with our local knowledge and invaluable contacts, we work the magic no matter what and that is such a reassuring comfort.” – Trafalgar Tours Director Patrizia Tocco

TOURS FOR SENIORS: 8 Best Companies for Senior Tours

Small Groups Bring Magic

“How pleasant it is to travel with a small group, because they get to have more quality time and conversations with their fellow travelers. They also love to have access to unique places and experiences with locals that would be impossible otherwise. Especially the ones that involved food with locals like the visit to the Tlahuac community or the cooking classes.” – Intrepid Leader Valeria Valdivia

It’s Full of Adventures and Companionship

“Guests frequently tell me ‘I expected to love the mountains and the scenery, but what I didn’t realize was how much I would enjoy my fellow travelers.’”

– Tauck Director Sarah Brooking-Morgan

Entertainment | sydney sweeney laughs off rumors she lied about working as universal studios tour guide, a mini-scandal erupted earlier this year after past and current universal studios tour guides called out the ‘euphoria’ actor for claiming she once had that guide job as a teenager.

During her monologue for “Saturday Night Live,” Sydney Sweeney humorously knocked down several pervasive internet rumors about her, including that she had a supposed “affair” with her “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell while engaged to someone else, or that her success and beauty is due to nutrition advice she received from a self-proclaimed dietician.

The other pervasive internet rumor over the past couple months has been that the two-time Emmy nominee lied about landing a prestigious job as a tour guide at Universal Studios as a teenager.

“Like I once said I worked at Universal Studios, and someone online accused me of lying about that,” Sweeney said while introducing herself as “SNL’s” latest host.

“Which is insane,” Sweeney proclaimed. “If I didn’t work there, how would I know all of Universal’s characters like Shrok, the Munions and Harry Porter,” she joked, riffing on the names of Shrek, the Minions and Harry Potter.

Sweeney’s Universal Studios mini-scandal erupted earlier this year. During multiple interviews, Sweeney offered up a rags-to-riches story about moving to Los Angeles with her family as a teenager, so she could try to make it as an actor, as entertainment site Perez Hilton and The Hollywood Reporter recounted . Sweeney explained that she had to help support her family because of her parents’ financial struggles, so she babysat, cleaned restaurant bathrooms and worked as a tour guide at the famed L.A. tourist attraction.

“I watched my parents lose a lot. We filed for bankruptcy, and they lost their house back home on the lake,” she told Women’s Health, according to THR. “We couldn’t afford life in L.A.”

As The Hollywood Reporter said, “a fledging actress punching a time card on the Universal Studios backlot is the type of celebrity factoid that travels far and wide on today’s worldwide web” — especially considering her meteoric rise after breakout roles in “Sharp Objects” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” followed by “Euphoria” and the first season of “The White Lotus.”

Soon, “multiple” TikTokers, who claimed past and current gigs at Universal Studios, called Sweeney out, THR and Perez Hilton reported. The main argument of Sweeney’s detractors is that landing such a job involves a long and “notoriously difficult” screening process.

“It’s not true, she’s lying,” declared TikTok user Taylor Hancock, who posted a clip that details his “many years” of leading tours on the classic (Universal) tour and as a VIP guide on the backlot, THR reported. Hancock said the screening process involves “multiple rounds of auditions just to join a class to study the information to possibly get the job.” He said, “It’s not just a summer job that any teenager can get.”

Hancock also argued that Sweeney began to appear “cagey or uncomfortable” in interviews on the matter, as if she wanted to quickly change the subject to avoid anyone digging deep into her employment history, THR said.

“No hate to her,” Hancock said, according to THR. “I don’t know why she’s choosing to fib about this. But seeing Sydney Sweeney dance around this and never give a straight answer is kinda crazy considering she’s the one that volunteered that information, that verifiably false information.”

But The Hollywood Reporter ended up doing that deep-dive into Sweeney’s employment history last month and found that she was telling the truth. She was employed as a tour guide at Universal Studios — though her tenure was “short-lived.”

Sweeney was hired by Universal Studios Hollywood on June 12, 2016, and attended an orientation shift, followed by a training shift, THR found. However, she left the job on July 18, 2016, when she booked an acting job. THR said she was indeed busy in 2016 and 2017, with a number of small roles in films and TV series.

In her “SNL” monologue, Sweeney explained how grateful she was to her parents for believing in her — enough to drive her 19 hours from her hometown of Spokane, Washington, to Los Angeles so she could begin auditioning for film and TV roles.

Sweeney said that the only reason they believed in her is because “I presented them with a five-point plan to break into acting. It was a PowerPoint presentation and I still have it.” Sweeney pointed to a screen that showed a slide that said: “Audition, get an agent, do commercials and short films, then get my SAG card.’”

However, Sweeney also joked that she had a backup plan if the first one failed. That’s when a slide appeared on the screen that read, “Plan B: Show boobs.”

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

the guided tours

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

the guided tours

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

the guided tours

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

the guided tours

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

the guided tours

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

How to Watch Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie: New Release Time, Date and Trailer

The record-breaking concert film will be available on Disney Plus earlier than expected.

the guided tours

The Eras Tour concert film is finally hitting streaming on March 14.

The Eras Tour concert film is finally hitting streaming on March 14.

Disney Plus is entering its Swiftie era. The streamer will be the exclusive home of the newest version of Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour concert film, beginning the evening of March 14 -- a couple of hours earlier than originally expected.

Swift announced that fans would be able to stream the film at home earlier than expected, moving up the release time to Thursday night, March 14. The first version of The Eras Tour movie came out in theaters, where it was the  highest-grossing concert film , as reported by Variety. Then it was available for rent on demand. Now, Disney Plus's version of the film promises new performances -- and says goodbye to some fan favorites.

Disney Plus is already home to another Taylor Swift exclusive, Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions , a series that chronicles the making of her 2020 album Folklore. Swift's other documentaries and concert films have been available sporadically on various streaming services, including  Netflix  and Prime Video.

Are you ready for it ? If not, we've got you covered. Here's how to watch The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version), and why a VPN may be a useful tool for streaming.

Release time for the Eras Tour film in the US and abroad

The film will land on Disney Plus on Thursday, March 14 at 6 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET)  in all territories except Turkey, where it will be released on April 3. Swift announced that the film would be available earlier on Monday, along with a new trailer.

Pricing for Disney Plus starts at $8 per month in the US, but if you live in Canada, the platform costs CA$12 a month. UK fans can get the service for either £5 with ads, or £8 a month without ads. You can subscribe for a year and save 16%. In Australia, fans get Disney Plus for AU$14 per month.

Disney Plus

Carries the eras tour (taylor's version).

Disney Plus is the one-stop streaming location for the company's streaming catalog. Subscribers can stream Disney classics, Marvel Studios movies and TV shows and all new Star Wars content.

In the US, Disney Plus' Basic plan will set you back $8 a month, and the Premium plan costs $14 a month or $140 a year.

Disney Plus will serve as the exclusive streaming home for The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version), so if you want to stream the flick, you'll need to sign up for the service.

What's new in the Disney Plus version of the film

Disney Plus' version of the flick will feature Swift's performance of Cardigan, which was previously cut from the theatrical release of the movie, and four additional acoustic songs, although it's not clear yet what those songs might be. Swift recorded six acoustic songs during filming in August, and the performances of Our Song and You're on Your Own, Kid made both the theatrical and on-demand rental versions of the film. That means acoustic performances of I Can See You, Maroon, You Are in Love and Death by a Thousand Cuts could be featured in the newest version of the film.

Songs excluded from the Disney Plus cut of the movie include Long Live, The Archer, Wildest Dreams and No Body, No Crime.

How to stream the film using a VPN

Perhaps you're traveling abroad and want to stream The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) while away from home. With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the movie from anywhere in the world. There are other good reasons to use a VPN for streaming, too.

A VPN is the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic. Using a VPN is also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. Streaming TV can be a bit smoother with a reliable, quality VPN that's passed our tests and security standards.

You can use a VPN to stream content legally as long as VPNs are legal in your country and you have a valid subscription to the streaming service you're using. The US and Canada are among the countries where VPNs are legal, but we advise against streaming or downloading content on illegal torrent sites. We recommend ExpressVPN, but you may opt for another provider from our best list such as Surfshark or NordVPN .

the guided tours

Express VPN

Best vpn for streaming.

ExpressVPN is CNET's current best VPN pick . You can sign up for ExpressVPN and save 49% plus get three months of access for free -- the equivalent of $6.67 a month -- if you get the annual subscription. Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Follow the VPN provider's instructions for installation and choose a country where The Eras Tour movie is streaming on Disney Plus. Before you open the streaming app, make sure you're connected to your VPN using your selected region. If you want to stream The Eras Tour film on more than one device, you may need to configure each one to ensure you are signed in. Go to settings and check your network connections to verify you're logged in and connected to your VPN account. Now you're ready to open Disney Plus to stream.

If you run into issues with streaming, first make sure your VPN is up and running on its encrypted IP address. Double-check that you've followed installation instructions correctly and you've picked the right geographical area for viewing. If you still encounter connection problems, you may need to reboot your device. Close all apps and windows, restart your device and connect to your VPN first. Note that some streaming services have restrictions on VPN access.

Correction, Feb. 9 : An earlier version of this story misstated the number of Taylor Swift's studio albums. The Tortured Poets Department, set for release in April, will be her 11th studio album.
