History of National Tourism Day

The rich tapestry of National Tourism Day 2024 finds its roots in a pivotal decision made by the Indian government, where January 25th emerged as a designated day to extol the virtues of tourism. This initiative was conceived with the overarching objective of highlighting the indispensable role tourism plays in fostering the growth and development of our nation, while simultaneously igniting enthusiasm among the populace for the myriad celebrations that mark Indian Tourism Day nationwide.

Charged with the responsibility of ensuring seamless operations, this ministry serves as the architect of the rules and plans that underpin the flourishing of tourism, effectively steering the course towards progress and expansion. Collaborating synergistically with various other entities, the Ministry of Tourism toils diligently to disseminate awareness globally, ensuring that people from all corners of the world are well-informed about the myriad treasures that India has to offer to discerning travelers. Their concerted efforts thus contribute significantly to the elevation of India’s profile on the global tourism stage.

In essence, National Tourism Day stands as a testament to the multifaceted initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism and its collaborative partners. As the nation collectively embraces the festivities, the spirit of National Tourism Day permeates every corner, inspiring a profound appreciation for the wonders that make India a captivating and unparalleled tourist haven.

Themes of National Tourism Day

In the year 2024, National Tourism Day embraces the overarching theme of “Sustainable Journeys, Timeless Memories.” This distinctive theme underscores the significance of fostering responsible and mindful travel practices among individuals and communities alike. The essence of this theme lies in encouraging a collective commitment to sustainable tourism, wherein travelers conscientiously engage in activities that minimize their environmental impact and contribute positively to the local communities they visit.

The concept of sustainable journeys advocates for a holistic approach to tourism, emphasizing the preservation of natural resources, cultural heritage, and the overall well-being of destinations. Travelers are urged to make informed choices that align with environmentally friendly practices, promoting the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. This theme calls upon the tourism industry, travelers, and local communities to collaborate in creating a harmonious balance between exploration and conservation.

Furthermore, the theme “Sustainable Journeys, Timeless Memories” invites a reflection on the enduring nature of memories created through travel. By adopting sustainable practices, travelers not only contribute to the longevity of the destinations they visit but also ensure that future generations can continue to experience and cherish the beauty and cultural richness of these places.

In essence, National Tourism Day 2024 serves as a platform to inspire a shift in mindset towards responsible tourism, encouraging travelers to be mindful of their ecological footprint and cultural impact. It's Time to Celebrate Nutrition! 🧨

Nutritious diets play a key role in helping individuals stay healthy throughout their lives. However, as the 2022 White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health highlighted, millions of Americans face hurdles when it comes to accessing healthy food — and far too many are at risk of experiencing diet-related diseases. To address this issue of growing concern, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a goal to end hunger and increase healthy eating and physical activity by 2030, so that fewer Americans experience diet-related diseases like diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

This goal is embedded in all aspects of our work at ODPHP. Whether it’s the Dietary Guidelines for Americans , the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, the Healthy People initiative, MyHealthfinder, or the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, encouraging Americans to lead healthy and active lives is what we do. In March, we’re highlighting the important role nutrition plays in health and well-being.

Join us as ODPHP celebrates and honors the role nutrition plays in our lives. Led annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the month of March is recognized as National Nutrition Month. ® This year's theme is “ Beyond the Table ,” which addresses “the farm-to-fork aspect of nutrition, from food production and distribution to navigating grocery stores and farmers markets — and even home food safety and storage practices. It also describes the various ways we eat — not only around a dinner table, but also on the go, in schools and restaurants, at games and events. This theme also includes sustainability, for instance, decreasing food waste from school and work to home and beyond.”

Over the course of the month, you’ll hear from ODPHP as we add commentary on topics related to the weekly themes that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is emphasizing. We’ll also be sharing information and resources from our programs that consumers and professionals can use to learn more about the connection between nutrition and health — and explore healthy eating recommendations included in the 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans .

Stay in the loop with ODPHP’s National Nutrition Month® activities by following us on X ( @HealthGov and @FitnessGov ), Facebook and LinkedIn . And follow the conversation with the hashtag #NationalNutritionMonth.
