Liberty Of The Seas cruise ship (Royal Caribbean)

The 4000-passenger ship Liberty OTS' first drydock was in 2011. During the refit, the boat gained new features (introduced on Oasis OTS ) including a large stage shows, Royal Nursery, an outdoor movie screen, a cupcake bakery. New technology know-how was placed in the form of interactive HDTVs and digital deck plan systems, located throughout the Liberty to help guests navigate by using LCD touch-screens for customized directions, ship factoids and real-time updates.

Liberty OTS also boasts all the Freedom-class favorites, including popular onshore brands like Johnny Rockets and Ben and Jerry's, cruising's only ice rink, a rock-climbing wall, the novel "Promenade" concept and Boleros Latin lounge.

At the beginning of 2016 Royal Caribbean's cruise ship, Liberty of the Seas has undergone an extensive drydock revitalization. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the new features to be constructed, such as the Splashaway Bay waterpark, The Perfect Storm water slides, new restaurants and bar dining options.

Those who opt for My Time Dining have to prepay gratuities. Liberty Of The Seas Wiki

Liberty OTS is fleet's 2nd Freedom-Class liner, with sisterships Freedom  and  Independence . Liberty was built in 2007 by Aker Finnyards Shipyard (Turku, Finland). This shipyard was later acquired by STX Europe (a subsidiary of the South Korean multinational STX Corporation). Ship's godmother was Donnalea Madeley. She was elected from about 2500 female travel agents, who had shown fondness of social causes. Donnalea Madeley is from Ontario, and the first travel agent to win such a position (usually given to VIPs). The christening ceremony was held at PortMiami  on May 18, 2007.

The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) was a 7-day Caribbean itinerary starting on May 19. Liberty OTS had some special pre-inaugural cruises before the liner arrived in Miami. The first was the Transatlantic crossing ( Southampton  to  NYC New ), the second - repositioning from NYC to Miami (visiting several US East Coast ports).

Like all newly refurbished RCI ships, Liberty offered the DreamWorks Experience (2011-2018). Liberty OTS is an "Art Nouveau'" decorated modern cruise liner. Passengers will be amazed by the mixing coloured light projections on broken or hanging canvasses created by the unique digital art celebrity Miguel Chevalier. All the rest is totally Royal Caribbean - the feature entertainment options with great shows, grand Vegas-style productions, the "ice-skating and rock-climbing", numerous themed bars and lounges, modern facilities to spend quality time on board.

Liberty OTS refurbishment 2016 review

During ship’s drydock 2016 refurbishment (January 10 - February 6), Royal Caribbean added a group of 3 waterslides on Deck 13 aft (near the Flowrider simulator). The Aqua Park (lido deck 11) has a new kids-only water playground area called “Splashaway Bay”.

Liberty OTS is the first Freedom-class RCI ship with waterslides. The first ever Royal Caribbean ship originally built with slides is  Harmony of the Seas  (launched 2016) with a total of 4 water slides.

The list of deck plan changes after the 2016 drydock refurbishment includes:

  • (On deck 2) 3 inside cabins were removed (numbers 2405, 2403, 2401).
  • (On deck 3) the Catacombs (218-seats Disco Nightclub, level 1) was replaced with 19 new interior cabins. Also here, 4 new interior cabins were added near the Art Gallery (starboard). Both lounges Bernini (portside) and Velasquez (starboard) were replaced with 10 new oceanview staterooms. Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Rembrandt to “Main Dining Room” (level 1).
  • (On deck 4) the Catacombs disco (level 2) was replaced by the Sabor Modern Mexican (restaurant). Also here, Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Michelangelo to “Main Dining Room” (level 2).
  • (On Promenade deck 5) the show lounge was renamed from “The Sphynx” to “Star Lounge”. Also here, the Champagne Bar (wine bar) was replaced by R-Bar. Dining Room restaurant was renamed from Botticelli to “Main Dining Room” (level 3). Cupcake Cupboard (bakery) was added.
  • (On deck 6) a new inside cabin was added forward (number 6137).
  • (On deck 7) 5 new inside cabins were added, 4 of which in the place of the Library (removed to deck 9).
  • (On deck 9) a new inside cabin was added forward (number 9237). Also here were added Library and Card Room, while the Concierge Club was removed.
  • (On Lido deck 11) the H2O Zone was replaced by the new Splashaway Bay (water park with slides). Also here, the Portofino restaurant was replaced by “Giovanni’s Table” (Italian restaurant).
  • (On Spa deck 12 forward) around the ShipShape Spa, new cabins were added in categories Q-Inside, Panoramic Oceanview (PF-Family Panoramic, P1-Larger, P2-Panoramic) and E2-Spa Balcony.
  • (On deck 13) Liberty Dunes (9-hole mini golf course with Golf Simulator) was replaced with the Perfect Storm waterslides (Cyclone, Typhoon). Also here, the Wipe Out! (20-seats burger bar) was replaced with the “Tidal Wave” slide (Boomerang-type). While the waterslide structure was ready after the ship’s refurbishment, its opening was re-scheduled for June 2016 due to some initial design flaws discovered after the slide’s installation. The design was altered by adding padding for the impact areas of the slide.
  • (On deck 14) both portside multipurpose rooms – Cloud Nine (24-seats) and Seven Hearts (33-seats) were replaced with Suite Lounge.
  • Internet speed was upgraded (to Voom).

During drydock 2016, a total of 89 new cruise cabins were added. Among those, 26 are Panoramic ocean views (with floor-ceiling windows facing forward) on deck 12.

Liberty Of The Seas refurbishment 2011 review

The list of deckplan changes after drydock 2011 included:

  • All cruise accommodations were renovated.
  • “DreamWorks Experience” (Walt Disney themed entertainment program) was implemented.
  • The Royal Caribbean’s signature Nursery was added on deck 12.
  • On Lido Deck 11 (in the main pool area) a huge movie screen (outdoor theatre) was installed.
  • Vintages (wine bar) was upgraded.
  • BRITTO Art Gallery was added on deck 3.

The Theatre Lounge's programming was upgraded with complimentary DreamWorks 3D movies and a new Broadway musical production (“Saturday Night Fever”).

All about the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas

Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas cruise ship

The Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas was built in 2007. It was renovated in 2016. It's considered a large size ship. Coming in at 1,112 ft long and 185 ft wide, it's roughly the length of 3.1 football fields, as wide as 3.5 tractor trailers, and the same height as a 14-story building.

The Liberty of the Seas can hold 3,798 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Liberty of the Seas has a space ratio of 41. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship's space-to-person ratio is about average.

The Liberty of the Seas is one of three Freedom-class ships currently sailing with Royal Caribbean. The Freedom-class ships were the first to have the FlowRider surf simulator, which is now available across the entire fleet. They are known for their multiple pools and whirlpool options, some cantilevered off the side of the ship. The Liberty of the Seas is very similar to its sister-ships; Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the Seas, although each ship may have some differences.

Liberty of the Seas Restaurants

Windjammer on the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas

Food is a big part of any cruise, and there will plenty on the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas. You have 12 different dining options to choose from. Of those options, 4 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 8 options have an additional fee. Some of those options are a set price and some have a la cart menu pricing. Only 33% of the dining options are included meaning you might spend more while on the ship due to the additional fees.

Liberty of the Seas Bars and Drinks

Vintages on the Liberty of the Seas

Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas has 14 different bars and lounges where you can enjoy a beer or cocktail. It also has 1 other bars that are available for select guests.

Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

Royal Caribbean also serves the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship. Most Royal Caribbean ships also have Coke Freestyle machines where you can make 100 different flavor combinations.

Pools and Hot Tubs on Liberty of the Seas

The main pools and giant movie screen on Royal Caribbeans Liberty of the Seas

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day in a pool, a cruise might not be the right choice. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas has a total of 3 pools and 7 hot tubs.

Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.

Liberty of the Seas Features

There are quite a few things to do on the Liberty of the Seas. These are the main amenities that are available. Some are included in the cost of the cruise, while others have an additional charge.

Cruise Costs

Royal Caribbean is a mainstream cruise line. Mainstream cruise lines cater to a variety of guests, hoping to provide something for everyone. These typically cost about $100 - $350 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year.

Liberty of the Seas Onboard Costs

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Royal Caribbean ship.

Royal Caribbean uses dynamic pricing, which means the pricing for many things will vary per sailing. The daily gratuities and tip are consistent across the fleet, but the pricing for the drink package, internet, and excursions will change. The only way to know your price is to consult the Royal Caribbean cruise planner once you're booked.

22 Must-Have Tips & Advice for Sailing on Liberty of the Seas

If you’re taking a Royal Caribbean cruise from Galveston, then there is a good chance you’ll sail aboard Liberty of the Seas.

As the largest ship sailing from the island, Liberty of the Seas is massive: more than 1,000 feet long and totaling 15 decks. Should you sail on her, then you’re likely taking a 7-day cruise to places like Cozumel, Roatan, or Grand Cayman.

With any ship there is always some helpful tips and advice that can make your trip go more smoothly, save you money, or have a better vacation. On a ship the size of Liberty of the Seas, there are even more things you should know.

Below, we’ve rounded up more than 20 tips and pieces of advice that you’ll want to know before you set sail on the Royal Caribbean ship.

Want to Eat at a Specialty Restaurant? Try It for Lunch for Cheaper

Liberty of the Seas boasts several specialty restaurants from Sabor (Mexican food) to Chop’s Grille. Eating at these restaurants isn’t included in your cruise fare; you have to pay a per-person charge to eat there. If you want to save some money, try them out at lunch. Prices are significantly less during lunch — usually about 35% less than what you’ll pay at dinner time.

Drink Cards Are Available; Save on Drinks

Royal Caribbean 10 Drink Card

Everyone knows about drink packages, but do you know about drink cards? Royal Caribbean sells 10-drink cards on the ship. For $79 (plus gratuity), you get a punch card good for 10 drinks. You can even share the drinks with others, unlike a drink package. It’s an easy way to save some cash on cocktails without having to commit to a daily drink package. You can read more about the drink card here .

Take the Early Debarkation Options to Get Off Fastest

It used to be that debarking in Galveston took a long time, no matter when you decided to get off the ship. These days the port has improved the debarkation process to where you can usually get off the ship in about 30 minutes. If you are able to carry all of your luggage, then select the early debarkation option. On a recent cruise we were off the ship, through immigration and walking to our vehicle in just about half an hour.

Nighttime on Pool Decks Is Relaxing

Night on Liberty of the Seas

Oddly enough, the busiest area of Liberty of the Seas during the day is the most relaxing at night. Once the sun sets, the crowds leave the pool decks — leaving them wide open for you to enjoy. Yes, you can still hop in a hot tub, but simply grabbing a pool lounger and sitting out and taking in the night breeze is wonderful, especially if you don’t have a balcony cabin of your own.

Look for Park and Cruise Hotels Before Your Cruise

Galveston offers plenty of cheap parking while you cruise, but if you are planning to stay in the area before, then check out hotels with park and cruise packages. In exchange for one night’s stay, you can often park for free. It’s a great deal that can save you some cash on your vacation. You can see Galveston hotels with parking here .

Room Service Costs Money… Except For This Loophole

Want to order room service? In most cases, it costs $7.95 per delivery. That’s still a good deal considering you can order whatever you want. But if you want free room service, then you should know that the continental breakfast option is free for passengers. Anything more, however, and you’ll get charged the $7.95.

Take Advantage of Cheap Babysitting

Royal Babies and Tots

If you are traveling with kids, then you’re in luck — kid’s areas are free. If you are traveling with children under 3, then you are still in luck. While the “Royal Babies and Tots” nursery does charge, the fees are minimal. It’s $6 per hour for childcare during normal hours and only $8 per hour during the evening. That’s a fantastic deal for a few hours of relaxation while the little ones play.

Go Early in the Day for Waterslides and FlowRider

Liberty of the Seas has several waterslides and the FlowRider on the top of the ship at the back. These are popular places to spend some time and for good reason — they are tons of fun. If you want to avoid lines, check them out early in the morning when they first open. There aren’t as many people around at this time, and at lower latitudes it’s still plenty warm.

Pack Toiletries and OTC Medicines… They Are Expensive on the Ship

Toiletries for sale on a ship

Would you pay $17.99 for a bottle of DayQuil? If you need some on the ship, you might. There are toiletries for sale on Liberty of the Seas, but they are ridiculously expensive. Instead, pack anything you might need or wait until you reach a port of call, which almost always has a small pharmacy for cruise passengers.

Check the Cozumel Taxi Rates Before You Get In

Unlike most ports, Cozumel has set taxi rates to the majority of tourist spots on the island. The boards are posted near the taxi pick-up areas. Prices are quoted for the entire trip — NOT per person. Be sure to grab a quick snapshot of the sign before you get a cab in case there is any dispute. You can see the current rates here.

Casino Payouts Aren’t Great

Playing in a casino is always a losing proposition in the long term, but cruise ships can make it even worse. We’ve found poor payouts across cruise ships , including 6-to-5 payouts on blackjack, compared to the customary 3-to-2. Enjoy the casino and have fun, but know that your payouts may not be that great.

Higher Decks Are More Convenient (And Not Noisy)

The action on Liberty of the Seas is most often around the pool, located on deck 11. If you can score a room on deck 10, then you are a short walk to the pool, as well as the buffet and some specialty restaurants. That’s much easier than waiting on an elevator or climbing flight after flight of stairs. And if you are worried about the noise, don’t be. We have personally stayed on this deck and couldn’t hear a peep above our cabin.

Deck 4 Offers Quiet and a Great View

Most passengers head to the top decks on Liberty of the Seas to get some fresh air. You can also check out deck 4, which has an outside area that wraps around the ship. Not as many people visit this deck, so it’s usually quiet while giving your a great view of the water while the ship is underway.

Ports Have Spots For Free Photo Ops

Liberty of the Seas in Cozumel

Ports like Cozumel and Costa Maya — often visited by Liberty of the Seas — feature large signs that are perfect for a photo to remember your vacation. Just wait your turn to step in front of the sign and get your snapshot. It’s a free souvenir that you’ll remember forever.

Take the Stairs if Possible

One of the most frustrating things about cruise ships, including Liberty of the Seas, is the slow elevators. Most of the time it’s considerably faster just to take the stairs. We know that’s not possible for everyone, but you’ll save a lot of time if you can. Plus, what’s the harm in burning off a few extra buffet calories?

The Casino Has $2 Mimosas

Cheap drinks aren’t something that you often find on a cruise, but during special times (usually one hour in the middle of the day), Casino Royale on Liberty of the Seas offers $2 mimosas. If you are looking for a deal on your next drink, it doesn’t get much cheaper than this. But hurry, the drinks are offers for an extremely limited amount of time.

Internet, Drinks, Restaurants? Buy Packages Before You Board

Internet can cost $20 per day . Drink packages run about $60 . And it can be $30 per person to eat at some specialty restaurants. If you want to save, then look at your Cruise Planner online before you board the ship. There are discounted rates that can save you a considerable chunk of cash versus waiting to pay for these items on the ship. For instance, drink packages were buy one, get one 50% off for Liberty of the Seas.

Be Ready for a Limited Drink Menu in Texas Waters

Texas limited beer menu

Due to Texas laws, when in the state Liberty of the Seas can serve only alcohol bought from a Texas distributor. The ship offers a limited drink menu when docked in Galveston or in Texas waters . That means you may not be able to get your favorite beverage until a few hours into your trip. Don’t worry though, by the evening of the first night the full bar is open.

You Can Use Casino Points to Pay Your Bill

Just like on land, you can earn points in the casino that can be redeemed. In this case, the points earned on the ship can be used to take off charges from your room bill. So if you buy drinks or Internet service while on the ship, those casino points can be used to reduce the amount that you’ll owe. The redemption starts at 1,000 points, which is worth $20.

Looking For a Less-Crowded Hot Tub? Try the Solarium

Hot tubs in the main pool area of Liberty of the Seas can get crowded — especially with kids. Instead, check out the adults-only Solarium. There are two oversized hot tubs that jut out over the water for a great view. Best of all, there are far fewer people in these tubs than in the main ones on the pool deck.

Keep Tabs on Your Bill From Your TV

It can be tough to keep an eye on your spending while on the cruise, but you can do so from your TV in the stateroom. There is a special menu that will show you all sorts of information, including an itemized bill for everything charged to your account while on the cruise. It’s a bit clunky to access from the TV, but it’s a good way to make sure that you aren’t going over your budget.

Don’t Buy Any Souvenirs on the Ship Unless They Are On Sale

While on the ship, you will have the chance to buy all sorts of souvenirs and gifts. From t-shirts to jewelry to watches, it’s all there. But before you get too excited, be sure you wait until there is a sale going on. Cruise ships run near-constant sales on these items to get passengers to purchase. If there is something you have your eye on and it’s not on sale, then just wait a day or two to get a deal.

We just got off of Liberty of the Seas out of Galveston. We sailed to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. I can’t say enough good about the ship, food, and fun! The staff were so helpful and courteous. The nighttime shows were 1st rate quality, and the ship was BEAUTIFUL!!! We want to sail the same ship next time to Roatan, Cozumel, and Costa Maya! Be sure to bring cash, $5’s, $10’s, and $20’s for tipping on excursions! The natives of each port are the SWEETEST!!!

Can you bring bottle of water on board. Do they have a faster to the fun program like carnival

If you want to bring a bottle of water that you’re drinking, we’d think they would let that slide. If you wanted to bring a pack of water, Royal Caribbean doesn’t allow that. They also don’t have a Faster to the Fun type of program.

Thanks! Your advice is handy – we are planning a trip on LOS soon.

Glad to hear it. Have an amazing trip!

The 7 classes of Royal Caribbean cruise ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Even if you're a newcomer to cruising, you've probably heard of Royal Caribbean 's giant Icon Class and Oasis Class ships. With the exception of a single MSC Cruises vessel , they're far bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat and like nothing else you'll find at sea.

Indeed, when you hear people talking about the wow factor of Royal Caribbean's "floating megaresorts," it's likely they're referring to the six ships in these two sets of vessels. This includes the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas — the world's biggest cruise ship.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

That said, not all Royal Caribbean ships are similarly supersized. While the line is perhaps best known for giant vessels — it operates six of the 10 biggest cruise ships in the world — it also markets some relatively smaller, more intimate ships.

In fact, Royal Caribbean has eight vessels that are less than half the size of the Oasis Class ships.

If you're thinking about booking a Royal Caribbean cruise, you'll find the line offers a wide range of ship styles and designs.

With the relatively recent removal of two older ships from its fleet, Royal Caribbean — the world's largest cruise line by passenger capacity — now has 27 oceangoing vessels in all. That's more than any other major cruise line, and it means that you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect Royal Caribbean ship for you.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options is that the 27 ships can easily be bunched into just seven groups of vessels that have similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

These seven groups are made up of ships constructed around the same time with the same basic design. They're known in cruise industry lingo as "classes," and each has its own look and feel.

An introduction to Royal Caribbean ships

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

For the most part, Royal Caribbean operates big, bustling megaships that will appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. The company has built its brand around offering vacationers a ton of diversions on its ships, whether for dining (some vessels have more than 20 distinct places to grab a bite) or entertainment. Its vessels are lively and fun.

The over-the-top megaresort experience on a Royal Caribbean ship varies from class to class, though.

The line's one Icon Class and five Oasis Class ships are unlike anything else you'll find at sea when it comes to size, amenities and capacity. They each can hold more than 6,600 passengers, with every berth full.

Somewhat smaller in size but still giant by any measure, each of the line's five Quantum Class and three Freedom Class vessels has a total capacity ranging from around 4,500 to 5,600 passengers. With space for around 3,800 passengers at maximum occupancy, the line's five Voyager Class vessels are relatively large, too.

Together, the 19 vessels of these five classes — Icon, Oasis, Quantum, Freedom and Voyager — make up Royal Caribbean's big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at around 2,500 passengers.

While no longer the focus at Royal Caribbean, the smaller ships (which are generally the line's older ships) allow it to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail per day.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

As you might expect, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships have the most amenities. With each step down in size, you'll find fewer restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and attractions. Even the smallest Royal Caribbean ships still have quite a bit to offer, though.

If you're sailing with the line for the first time, it's important to understand that not all of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions and venues are present on all its ships. For instance, while every Royal Caribbean vessel now has one of the line's iconic climbing walls (some have two), only the 19 ships of the line's big-ship classes have a FlowRider surfing simulator. Only the 14 ships of the Icon, Oasis, Freedom and Voyager classes have ice skating rinks.

Here is a look at the seven classes of Royal Caribbean ships in more detail.

Ships in class: Icon of the Seas (2024), Star of the Seas (coming in 2025); unnamed vessel (coming in 2026)

Size: 250,800 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Is your idea of a great vacation a trip to a megaresort loaded with more restaurants, bars, theaters and watery amusements than you can imagine? Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class is the ship class for you.

As mentioned above, Icon of the Seas — the only Icon Class ship currently in operation — is bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat at 250,800 tons, and for big-ship lovers, there's really nothing quite like it. The two more Icon Class ships debuting soon will be equally over-the-top in size and venues.

Each of the Icon Class vessels that are operating or soon to debut has been designed with seven separate pools (a new record for a cruise ship), a water park with six waterslides (also a record), a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks.

Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks, just in case you want to get your Michelle Kwan on.

What you won't find on the Icon Class ships is intimacy. These are vessels that can carry as many as 7,600 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,300 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with nearly 10,000 people.

If the above sounds downright outrageous to you, it is. Keep in mind, though, that the biggest megaresorts on land are even bigger. The biggest resort in the U.S. — The Venetian in Las Vegas — has 7,092 rooms. That means it can hold more than 14,000 guests, assuming there are two people per room.

By that measure, Icon Class ships are almost small.

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Icon Class ships also don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean's designers are masters at creating vessels that can carry thousands and thousands of people but still feel relatively uncrowded — at least in some areas. You can have a quiet afternoon reading a book on a bench in the sometimes nearly empty, tree-lined Central Park area of Icon of the Seas while, just a few decks above, thousands of vacationers are frolicking about at the ship's pools.

Only one ship in this series (Icon of the Seas) is currently operating, but the second vessel in the series (Star of the Seas) is already open for bookings. Its maiden voyage is set for Aug. 17, 2025.

Quantum Class

Ships in class: Quantum of the Seas (2014), Anthem of the Seas (2015), Ovation of the Seas (2016), Spectrum of the Seas (2019) and Odyssey of the Seas (2021)

Size: 168,666 to 169,379 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Unveiled in 2014, the Quantum Class may be Royal Caribbean's most innovative class ever.

In addition to a wide range of restaurants, bars and showrooms, the five ships in the class feature some of the most unusual new attractions you'll find at sea. This includes bumper car pavilions (yes, somehow they found room for these) and skydiving simulators.

The ships also have glass-enclosed capsules mounted on mechanical arms that will take you soaring into the sky for bird's-eye views. They're called the North Star rides, and they may be the oddest attractions ever added to the top of a cruise ship.

Quantum Class ships also feature unusual, multilevel entertainment spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass walls called Two70. The spaces are home to innovative shows that often feature aerial performers, singers and dancers who emerge from openings in the floor or the ceiling. At certain times of the day, the glass walls transform into an expansive ambient surface called Vistarama that projects real and imagined scenes.

Related: The 10 wildest attractions you'll find on a cruise ship

All the above come in addition to many of the core Royal Caribbean attractions you'll find on most of the brand's ships, including pools, rock climbing walls, casinos, spas and Broadway-style shows. But don't expect all the classic Royal Caribbean features on Quantum Class ships. For instance, you won't find ice skating rinks on the vessels even though they're a staple of all other big Royal Caribbean ships. Quantum Class ships also don't have water parks.

The Quantum Class ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels (and thus don't have quite as much room for things like ice skating rinks). At around 169,000 tons, though, they're still among the biggest ships at sea, with a significant number of venues.

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

They also can carry a lot of people. Most of the ships in the class hold 4,180 passengers at double occupancy — 4,905 if every berth is filled. One exception is Spectrum of the Seas, which was specifically built for the China market with some design differences. It can hold up to 5,622 passengers. Additionally, the newest ship in the series, Odyssey of the Seas, can hold up to 5,498 passengers.

Related: 4 things you'll love about Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas

One more big difference between the ships of the Quantum Class and other big Royal Caribbean ships: The Quantum Class ships are designed to be more versatile.

If you look closely at their deck plans, you'll notice that more of their main attractions are indoors and protected from the elements than the ships of the Icon, Oasis or Freedom classes, for example.

One of the two main pool areas on each Quantum Class ship (except Odyssey of the Seas) is enclosed. The bumper car pavilions are, too, doubling as roller skating rinks or indoor basketball courts. This allows Royal Caribbean to send the ships to cooler regions of the world, such as Alaska and Northern Europe, where the temperatures aren't always conducive to outdoor activity.

Royal Caribbean has also used some Quantum Class ships for sailings out of China.

Oasis Class

Ships in class: Oasis of the Seas (2009), Allure of the Seas (2010), Harmony of the Seas (2016), Symphony of the Seas (2018), Wonder of the Seas (2022) and Utopia of the Seas (coming 2024)

Size: 226,838 to 236,857 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Until this year's debut of Icon of the Seas, these were the world's biggest and most venue-packed cruise ships. Although they're not quite as big as the new vessel, they remain among the very best options for vacationers who love nothing more than a big, bustling resort with every sort of amusement known to humans.

Each of the Oasis Class vessels has three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and a zip line on their top decks — a nearly as wide array of features as the new Icon of the Seas. Inside the vessels, as on Icon of the Seas, you'll find a seemingly endless number of lounges, bars, restaurants and shops, as well as large casinos, spas and showrooms. Like Icon of the Seas, each ship has an indoor ice skating rink.

As is the case for Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class ships, which have many similarities with the Oasis Class ships, these vessels carry a huge number of people. They can carry as many as 6,988 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,200 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with more than 9,000 people — not quite as many as the nearly 10,000 you could find on an Icon Class ship but still a huge number.

The good news for those of you worried about excessive crowds is that, as is the case with the Icon Class ships, the Oasis Class ships don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean designed them with a "neighborhood" concept that spreads passengers out in seven or eight (depending on the ship) distinct areas, such as the Pool and Sports Zone and the Boardwalk amusement zone. A lot of thought went into how passengers move between these neighborhoods, too.

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Note that there are a few differences from ship to ship in the Oasis Class series. For starters, the three newest and largest ships in the series — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas — have a few additional attractions and venues. Among them is the Ultimate Abyss, a terrifying slide that drops nine decks. (Royal Caribbean says it drops 10 decks, but don't be fooled; the line counts a nonexistent Deck 13.)

There are also giant waterslides on four of the five ships. Only Allure of the Seas is missing them. There are plans to add waterslides to Allure of the Seas, but they were put on hold after COVID-19 shut down cruising in 2020.

Related: The 6 most spectacular waterslides and watery fun zones at sea

A handful of restaurants also differ from ship to ship in the series.

The newest and largest ship in the series, Wonder of the Seas, has the most differences from the other Oasis Class vessels. At 236,857 tons, it's about 4% bigger than the next biggest ship in the series; the extra space is devoted to such additions as a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, a restaurant and a sun deck.

A sixth ship in the Oasis Class series, Utopia of the Seas , is scheduled to debut in July. Construction of the vessel began in April 2022 at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France — the same shipyard that built Wonder of the Seas.

Radiance Class

Ships in class: Radiance of the Seas (2001), Brilliance of the Seas (2002), Serenade of the Seas (2003) and Jewel of the Seas (2004)

Size: 90,090 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Not sure you want to sail on a megaship with 6,000 people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? The Radiance Class ships may be the perfect solution.

At 90,090 tons, the four vessels in the series are less than half the size of Royal Caribbean's massive Icon Class and Oasis Class ships, but still big enough that they have a lot to offer.

Each vessel has more than a half-dozen places to eat, including the main restaurant, a casual buffet, a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant and an Asian venue.

You'll also find three pools on each ship, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court and an adults-only solarium. Each ship has a theater, a spa, a casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

What you won't find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions — such as ice skating rinks, surfing simulators, giant waterslides and bumper car pavilions — that Royal Caribbean has put on its bigger vessels. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, the Radiance class probably isn't for you.

Each Radiance Class ship holds more than 2,100 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That's less than half the number of passengers on the biggest Royal Caribbean ships.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships offer.

Freedom Class

Ships in class: Freedom of the Seas (2006), Liberty of the Seas (2007) and Independence of the Seas (2008)

Size: 154,407 to 156,271 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

As recently as 2009, these were the biggest cruise ships in the world, and they're still quite big compared to almost all other cruise vessels afloat.

While no longer on the list of the top 25 biggest cruise ships — they've been displaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon, Oasis and Quantum Class vessels, as well as several ships from other lines — the Freedom Class vessels offer a classic big-ship experience with lots of restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top attractions.

The Freedom Class ships, notably, were the first Royal Caribbean ships to feature a FlowRider surfing simulator on their top decks — now a signature attraction for the line. The vessels also have multiple pool areas, a water park, a miniature golf course and a rock climbing wall on their top decks (which are among the most activity-packed at sea).

Indeed, the top decks of Freedom Class ships are more loaded with attractions than any other Royal Caribbean vessels except the Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels. You just won't find several of the most over-the-top attractions, such as zip lines, that Icon Class and Oasis Class ships have.

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

In their interiors, Freedom Class vessels have the mall-like Royal Promenade spaces filled with eateries, bars and shops that have become standard on bigger Royal Caribbean ships. They also have large casinos and spas.

Related: Royal Caribbean just fixed the worst part of cruising

At around 156,000 tons, the Freedom Class ships are about 38% smaller than the Icon Class ships and 31% smaller than the Oasis Class ships, a significant step down in size. They're nearly 8% smaller than the Quantum Class ships.

They also carry significantly fewer passengers than the Oasis Class ships. Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the Seas carry about 3,900 passengers at double occupancy (closer to 4,600 with every berth filled). Liberty of the Seas can carry several hundred more.

Voyager Class

Ships in class: Voyager of the Seas (1999), Explorer of the Seas (2000), Adventure of the Seas (2001), Navigator of the Seas (2002) and Mariner of the Seas (2003)

Size: 137,276 to 139,999 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

The Voyager Class ships are similar to Freedom Class ships but shorter in length. In other words, the Freedom Class was a stretched version of the Voyager Class.

Like the Freedom Class vessels, the Voyager Class ships have many of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions, including rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks. In fact, the ships were the first at Royal Caribbean to have those attractions.

Voyager Class ships were also the first to feature a Royal Promenade with bars, cafes and shops in their interior. Each also has several specialty restaurants in addition to the main dining room and casual buffet; specialty restaurants include a version of Royal Caribbean's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and an Italian restaurant.

One of the main differences between the Voyager Class and the Freedom Class is that the Royal Promenades on Voyager Class ships are shorter. The top-deck areas of the Voyager Class ships are also more truncated than the Freedom Class vessels.

There are also fewer cabins on the Voyager Class ships, resulting in fewer passengers on board a typical sailing. Most of the ships carry around 3,100 passengers at double occupancy — about 800 fewer than the typical Freedom Class ship.

At around 139,000 tons, the ships are about 11% smaller than the Freedom Class ships.

There are also some variations in attractions among the five Voyager Class vessels. Navigator of the Seas has a relatively new waterslide zone that's home to The Blaster, the longest waterslide at sea . You won't find that on the other ships, though most of them have different waterslides. Only three of the five ships — Voyager of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas — have laser tag courses. Adventure of the Seas is the only vessel in the class with a kiddie splash zone.

Vision Class

Ships in class: Grandeur of the Seas (1996), Rhapsody of the Seas (1997), Enchantment of the Seas (1997) and Vision of the Seas (1998)

Size: 73,817 to 82,910 tons

royal caribbean cruise ship liberty of the seas

Dating to the 1990s, the Vision Class ships are the smallest at Royal Caribbean, and they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels.

In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship as well as those who care more about the destinations they visit than the onboard attractions.

Along those lines, Royal Caribbean often sends some of its Vision Class ships to Europe in the summer to operate port call-intensive itineraries. The vessels also often sail longer trips in the Caribbean that include less-visited southerly islands. In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience.

Vision Class ships are also sometimes based in secondary ports such as Baltimore or San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the size of the local cruise market might not warrant a larger vessel.

Except for rock climbing walls, the Vision Class ships have none of the signature Royal Caribbean deck-top attractions such as surfing and skydiving simulators. For the most part, their top decks are lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s. All have at least two pools and six whirlpools, except for Enchantment of the Seas, which has three pools and six whirlpools.

In addition to main restaurants and casual buffets, each ship has at least one (and often several) additional specialty restaurants. The line's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and Italian eatery Giovanni's Table are two of them. Rhapsody of the Seas has the biggest selection of dining; Enchantment of the Seas has the smallest. Three of the four vessels — all but Enchantment of the Seas — have an Izumi Asian restaurant.

Each of the ships varies slightly in size. Grandeur of the Seas is the smallest of the four vessels, measuring around 74,000 tons. Enchantment of the Seas is the biggest, measuring around 83,000 tons (it was, notably, lengthened by 73 feet in 2005).

Royal Caribbean orders 7th Oasis-class ship, second big cruise deal this week

I t’s been a good week to buy big cruise ships as Royal Caribbean Group announced it had ordered construction of a seventh Oasis-class ship following the debut this year of the Port Canaveral-bound Utopia of the Seas.

“While we eagerly anticipate the debut of Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas this summer, we’re already dreaming up her sister ship and the next installation in the brand’s extremely popular Oasis Class,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO of the parent company to Royal Caribbean International as well as the Celebrity and Silversea cruise brands.

It’s the second major ship announcement this week following Carnival Corp.’s order of a fourth Excel-class ship for Carnival Cruise Line.

Carnival Cruise Line to get 4th Excel-class ship, sister to Canaveral’s Mardi Gras

Royal executives in the last year have hinted that Oasis class ships might not be done despite the introduction this year of Icon of the Seas, the first of three in the larger Icon class.

Now the yet-to-be-named sister ship to the five existing Oasis-class ships as well as the under-construction Utopia of the Seas will be built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, with an expected completion in 2028. The announcement is contingent on securing financing but that is expected to be complete later this year, according to the cruise line group.

The first two ships in the class, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, which debuted in 2009 and 2010, respectively, were built at what is now the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, at the time known as STX Europe. The rest of the ships starting with Harmony of the Seas, which debuted in 2016, were constructed at the French shipyard, which at the time was called STX France. Symphony of the Seas followed in 2018 then Wonder of the Seas debuting in 2022.

Each of the first five Oasis-class vessels held the title of world’s largest cruise ship, each incrementally larger than the previous sister ships. Wonder of the Seas comes in at 235,600 gross tons and a 7,084 passenger capacity.

Icon of the Seas, which began sailing in January from PortMiami is a little more than 25,000 gross tons bigger and has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers. Its first sister ship, which is headed to Port Canaveral in 2025, is named Star of the Seas while the third Icon-class ship will arrive in 2026.

Royal Caribbean details new dining on Port Canaveral-bound Utopia of the Seas

That means when Utopia of the Seas debuts, it will only be the second largest cruise ship in the world until Star of the Seas’ arrival. At that point, Port Canaveral will host the largest and third largest ships in the world. Utopia of the Seas remains under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique and will arrive in Central Florida in July.

The Oasis class introduced the neighborhood concept to cruise lines including the open and green Central Park space in the middle of the ship. All but one of the Oasis-class ships now feature the 10-deck twisting dry slide The Ultimate Abyss and three-slide Perfect Storm water park. Their entertainment offerings include a main stage, ice rink and AquaTheater and more than 40 food and beverage venues.

Details on what will be on the seventh Oasis-class ship including where it might call home were not revealed, although each of the new ships have debuted at either PortMiami, Port Everglades or Port Canaveral.

“These are exciting times for Royal Caribbean, and we have an incredible partner in Chantiers de l’Atlantique to bring to life the lucky seventh Oasis Class vessel of what is a remarkable class of ships,” said Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley.

Here’s Everything I Did On The World’s Largest Cruise Ship

Nearly a quarter-mile long, the ship has eight neighborhoods, 20 eateries, six waterslides, and more.

That viral nine-month cruise from Royal Caribbean isn’t the company’s only ship making waves. In January, it unveiled the largest cruise liner in the world, the Icon of the Seas.

Weighing 250,800 tons and boasting a capacity of 7,600 passengers, the boat is split into eight neighborhoods — such as The AquaDome, Thrill Island, and Central Park — that are spread out over the ship’s 20 decks. Together they house seven swimming pools, an ice rink, 20 different eateries, bars, a casino, a theater, an art gallery, and more.

It’s a lot. When I was invited on board the 1,198-foot vessel for its maiden voyage, I jumped at the chance.

My three-night trip between Miami and the Bahamas began with a launch ceremony fronted by soccer icon Lionel Messi and Saved by the Bell ’s Mario Lopez, during which religious leaders blessed the ship to “ensure safe sailing for all on board.” After a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne was ceremoniously smashed on the boat’s side — a practice dating back to Queen Victoria in 1891 — we set sail amid an impressive fireworks display.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas cruise ship.

My first call of order was to collect my stateroom keys opposite the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture, known as the Pearl. It’s here where I was struck by the sheer scale of Icon. With so much to see and do on the record-breaking cruise, I strived to make the most of my time on board.

There Are Options For Type 1 & 2 Fun

I spent my first evening inside the “state of the art” AquaTheater , as Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty described it, where I witnessed a spectacular synchronized swimming and diving show.

Later, I stopped by the Royal Promenade bar for a citrus-infused cocktail before heading back to my Deck 11 stateroom. The following morning, I explored the Thrill Island neighborhood, where I took a shaky-legged harnessed stroll over the ship’s Skywalk (a narrow platform hovering over the deep ocean below).

The AquaDome inside Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas ship.

I also (rather unsuccessfully) tried my hand at the FlowRider surf simulator, scurried up the boat’s sea-view climbing walls, and tried all six slides at the Category 6 waterpark , including the tallest waterslide to ever sail, called the Frightening Bolt, and the first open freefall slide on a cruise.

I ended the eventful day with a tranquil dip in the adults-only infinity pool, The Hideaway , admiring a glistening seascape sunset. With soft DJ tunes and a cocktail in hand, the atmosphere felt like a Barcelona beach club.

Thrill Island and The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas.

Plus, So Many Eateries

To avoid busier breakfast spots like the Windjammer Café — where I’d found a plentiful assortment of global cuisines on my first day — I opted to start my mornings at the Park Café, nestled within the quieter Central Park neighborhood. For a refreshing start, try the made-to-order Kummelweck roast beef and egg sandwich, plus the piping hot double espresso.

There’s an impressive array of lunchtime options on board, such as the El Loco Fresh Mexican buffet, the AquaDome Market, and the Surfside Eatery. I was spoiled for choice by the time my midday cravings began to kick in, but my go-to spot was Deck 18’s Grove bar and restaurant. Dining al fresco, I chose the Mediterranean-inspired lamb shank complete with a light feta cheese and watermelon salad.

Central Park on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas.

As for dinner, the grand, multi-level Main Dining Room is an opulent spot. For my first meal on board, I sat beneath a towering chandelier and ordered the “most popular dish of the night,” as my waiter informed me, the steak and lobster tail surf and turf.

I also booked a reservation at the Nobu-esque Izumi Hibachi and Sushi restaurant, located on Deck 6. I spent my final night indulging in the chef’s signature Izumi Ryu Futomaki roll and green tea mochi ice cream.

You’ll Dock At This Bahamas Hideaway

The only stop on my 72-hour journey was CocoCay island in the Bahamas, a 120-acre private destination exclusively for Royal Caribbean guests.

Much like Icon herself, CocoCay gives visitors the option of chill or thrill. I chose the former and spent my time split between Oasis Lagoon’s swim-up bar and lounging on the warm sands of Hideaway Beach, where I brushed up on my backstroke in the turquoise waters.

Royal Caribbean's CocoCay Island.

Picking up an order of lobster rolls from the nearby Snack Shack, I took a stroll around the island, passing the Thrill Waterpark, a zip line, and a 137-meter-high helium balloon experience, which offers sky-high views of CocoCay and the mammoth ship herself.
