Dwarf Journey Review

Dave Ozzy

Dwarf Journey is a diamond. It’s a diamond in the ‘diamond in the rough’ sense, as we had zero expectations from it: it was yet another rogue-lite platformer in a cavern full of them. But it’s also a diamond in the concentrated-carbon sense. This is a game that takes the very small amount of gameplay that it has on offer, but refines it to the degree that every moment is dense and enjoyable, and it becomes a tiny, high-carat example of the genre.

Stop us if you’ve heard this before. You are a warrior, in this case a dwarf king, who has come to the deepest, most dangerous dungeon in the kingdom to test your mettle. There are four consecutive levels to the dungeon, each ending with a boss, and you have to see how far you can get before dying. And you will die. But dying isn’t the end of everything: you will have gathered enough resources and experience from the dungeon that you’ll be in better stead for the next run.

dwarf journey review 1

It really is the 101 of roguelike dungeon-crawling. We can’t really defend it in innovation terms. We’re desperately scrabbling around for something that Dwarf Journey does new, but the closest we can get is that you play a dwarf. And that the game is short.

Your dungeon run starts in the Echoing Cave. The levels are procedurally generated, and the first room is a safe one, where you will make your first move in one of the cardinal directions to hunt for the boss room. There’s a Metroid-like map in the top-right corner that displays the series of boxes that you will be moving through.

Hopping through a door will close all the exits, so you need to kill all the enemies to proceed. There are goblins that charge, goblins that chuck rocks at you, lunging bats and slugs that merrily wander their way around the walls of the level. So, you’re using your reasonably stumpy sword to cut into them, jumping out of the way of their attacks, and nursing your health bar.

Combat could have done with a bit more depth, especially as you have a single attack and no blocks or blinks to speak of. But your jump is versatile enough that it bridges the gap a little. You can double-jump, cling to walls for a wall-jump, and generally mix up the height of your leap. It’s all extremely responsive, too, and we got to the point where we could weave around arcing bats without taking a hit.

You might not want to progress from a room immediately after massacring everyone, as there’s a fair amount of loot around. Seams of ore can be mined for metals, and chests burst open with even more. You can dump the ore into mine carts (slightly rarer), which is regularly the right idea, as death means you lose all of the ore that you had on you. And – best of the bunch – there are occasional idol-like constructions that you can raid for weapon, armour and rune recipes, or temporarily boost your four main stats: Vitality, Strength, Agility and Luck.

dwarf journey review 2

Keep hunting through procedurally generated rooms (which, as it goes, are in that sweet spot of feeling varied, without feeling like they were randomly placed by an AI) and you’ll get to the boss room, which spans from goblin kings to infernal dragons, crystalline golems and armadillos. These are fine enough, containing a sequence of attacks that will decimate you on the first run, but will become trivial as you learn the pattern. And then you’re onto the next level, hopping from caves to lava tunnels to crystal caverns all over again.

Die and you’re back to the hub, the Refuge of Immortality, where you can make all manner of improvements to your dwarf. Your first stop will be to level up, and you will have swathes of points to spend. We’d get four or five level ups per run, so you can really feel the difference each time you play, which is essential for a finely tuned roguelike. Strength means you hit harder, Vitality allows you to take more hits, Agility makes you faster, and Luck triggers critical hits more often.

You can pop to the blacksmithy to create weapons and armours from your newly found recipes, and then improve them further, all of which requires the ore that you’ve mined. Again, in most runs you will be creating or upgrading gear one or two times over, so you will feel the difference. And then you’re over to the runes, which give you passive buffs for your character, with a greater number of slots for runes as you level up. These are awesome, truly transformative, giving you hefty improvements like life-regen whenever you kill an enemy, an extra life, and the chance of double-hits. Those three were our favourites, and they got us to the end with gusto. A merchant also turns up at level three, offering you some one-time unlocks and the ability to trade for different ores.

It’s relatively easy to pinpoint why we liked Dwarf Journey so much. Runs are short, and you’re quickly back at the hub, making several improvements to your dwarf. Those improvements are near-exponential, so you’re playing through again and feeling buff. Enemies that were tough are now taking one or two hits, and you’ve swiftly become a killing machine. Sure, you’re repeating old floors, but they’re quickly in your slipstream. The knowledge that the next run is going to become even easier is superbly satisfying, and keeps you replaying, and we looked to drain our run of every last metally drop, so that we could ramp up as much as possible.

dwarf journey review 3

And, while combat is simple, there’s an elegance to it. Your dwarf is a nimble, parkouring little dude, and controlling him becomes second nature. You can dismiss everyone in a room with three or four little double jumps, and then crash to the floor with a superhero landing. It’s all rather satisfying.

There are a few rusty links to the chain, but they’re nothing overly damaging. It’s not going to last you for longer than four hours, we would say, but the enjoyment is so concentrated that it’s almost a non-issue. The economy of the game also goes a bit haywire in the latter game: you stop needing certain types of ore, and Dwarf Journey introduces new ore that is frustratingly hard to get hold of. You’ve got the merchant to convert ores, but it’s a little slow to use and unsatisfying.

Dwarf Journey is small, short and completely lacking in innovation, but it concentrates your time with it into a thunderingly enjoyable burst. If you’re tired of every game wanting to be your new best friend, offering hundreds of hours of sprawl, tempting you back with numerous progression systems, events and live services, then Dwarf Journey is your game. It’s a tiny diamond: a refined experience that sparkles for the short time you spend with it.

You can buy Dwarf Journey from the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

Dwarf Journey Review

Dwarf Journey

Dwarf Journey is an enjoyable short rogue-lite but it has some horrible grindy achievements which can leave a bad taste for completionists. Beating the game took 7 hours, completing the grindy achievements added 4 more hours.

Steam

Approximate amount of time to 100%: 11h Estimated achievement difficulty: 5/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 1 Is there a good guide available: No, but you don’t need a guide Multiplayer achievements: No Missable achievements: No Grinding Achievements: Yes, very very grindy. I’ll explain more below. DLC-Only achievements: No Time-gated achievements: No RNG-achievements: For one you need a little bit of luck Does difficulty affect achievements: No difficulty option Unobtainable/glitched achievements: No

Dwarf Journey is an enjoyable rogue-lite that isn’t too long and eases the players into the game. The game has 4 biomes, all with an end boss. You collect experience and ore during your run. Ore is used to making gear and upgrade it. When you die you lose all the ore you’ve with you. In the first biome, you have a lot of opportunities to store your ore, so that if you die you don’t lose too much. This way a run always feels rewarding, because it will help you toward becoming stronger, even when the run didn’t go so well.

Every time when I entered a new biome, it felt like a new challenge. The monsters are stronger and you have to learn their abilities. But with some practice and upgrading your gear and stats it would be doable. The second boss gave me a bit of a challenge and especially the fourth boss. That one took me many tries.

I liked most of the achievements in Dwarf Journey. You get them for smashing pots/crates, eating meat, upgrading gear, killing monsters. The normal stuff you would expect in this type of game with no missable achievement. What I really dislike is how grindy the last 3 achievements are. For me, those were dying X amount of times and eating 500 meat. I combined those 2 by starting a run and if the first boss wasn’t within 3/4 rooms I would instantly go back to town, which gladly counts as a death. Otherwise, I would go for the boss because the chest that you get afterward gives 1 or 2 meat. After getting to the 500 meat it took me another 30 minutes of restarting a run instantly after entering it, which was possible to do 5/6 times per minute. But those last 3 achievements took me 4 hours after completing the game. This sucks because I enjoyed the game a lot before those 4 hours of grinding, but the last memory of a completionist will be of a boring grind with those arbitrary achievements. which leaves a bad taste while the rest of the game was a lot of fun.

My favorite Mario Kart for single player. The controls may take a while to get used to but they work pretty well most of the time. The gameplay is fun and addictive, racking up combos provides replayability and feels satisfying, and the amount of drivers, karts, and gliders keeps me playing, another reason why I keep playing is that there always is new content, a new Tour occurs every two weeks, and each one brings new content such as tracks, drivers, karts, and gliders. While the microtransactions are absurd except for the Gold Pass, the new content not being actually new sometimes, and the rankings plus multiplayer being mostly pay-to-win. Still the best Mario Kart for single player.

The game and the controls take a bit getting used to, but once you get used to manual drifting things become a lot easier. The prices of in-app purchases are absurdly high. I would still recommend the game. Rubies and coins are rare, but good f2p management easily helps you stay competitive.

Christian, 06 Jun, 2020

So disappointing... the fact that they made a racing game in portrait should indicate the level of thought and care that was put into this embarrassing entry in the Mario Kart $eries.

Novena, 05 Jun, 2020

It is not as good as any mario kart on Nintendo platforms, heavily p2w and bad controls.

Henrik, 05 Jun, 2020

The questionable control options and harsh monetization pushes people away from wanting to experience the full game. Although the graphic are nice, there is too many negatives that out weigh the positives.

Jolene, 04 Jun, 2020

Although it's a polished and beautiful game, the controls did not work for me. I ended up abandoning it quickly.

Naomi, 04 Jun, 2020

While I miss landscape controls of most other racing games, this is a new take on Mario kart that I did enjoy for a while.

Good loop. ui needs work.

Its a fun game. Nice to have a rougelite more like Rogue Legacy than Dead Cells. However, the UI does not take the iPhone notch into account and important parts of the interface are obscured when playing the game with the notch on the left side. I use a Backbone controller to play this game so having the left is the only option. Would also be great if the game was aware of the controller and would hide the touch UI

Great game with increasingly more obvious drawbacks

Ok, let me start by saying, that I found the first few hours playing this game really fun, and if it weren’t for these issues that I’m about to talk about, I would probably be giving this a higher rating. I am a huge rogue like fan, started with Dead Cells, and now I have, like, twenty and counting. And when I saw that there seemed to be another one for the collection, I was extremely excited. I downloaded the game and found the beginning very fun, interesting leveling up mechanics, I was into it… …Until I reached the level cap… Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a difficult game, but having to, basically, face the same brick wall with a different combination of these 50 levels, just trying to get some progress, having to face the same levels, with the same enemies. Now, I know a rogue like is supposed to be somewhat repetitive at some point in the progression. But this game reached that point, A LOT quicker than other titles I have played. If the developers added some level diversion, like those similar to that of Soul Knight, that would greatly extend the game’s ability to be entertaining for longer. But, anyway, that all that I have to say about this game, the general game mechanics are nice, but the same levels and the same enemies without any diversion can get dull very quickly.

From the beginning

Fun game! I wish I didn’t have to start over from the beginning when I die. How about an option to start at the level you died?

Q&A With Orube Game Studio

Pursuing a new upcoming video game experience currently under development, another two games that I have had my eye on for a long time is Super Mombo Quest and Dwarf Journey.  Both developed by Orube Game Studio based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Super Mombo Quest, in development since 2018, is a colouful Metroidvania inspired by the like of Super Meat Boy heavy on combat that requires players to string together combos reminiscent of classic arcade fighting games, similar to Guacamelee or Dust: An Elysian Tail. Dwarf Journey, on the other hand, is an action-adventure Roguelite inspired by Norse mytholgoy and that incorporates heavy RPG elements, such as levelling up the player character and collecting materials in order to forge stronger equipment. With both games set for release in the early part of 2021, I was curious to find out more about these two great-looking games, I got in touch with Orube Studio and their founder Pedro Savino to pose a few questions about the games and what players can come to expect from the final builds. Here’s what Pedro Savino had to say about Super Mombo Quest and Dwarf Journey.

What were the influences behind your games? Our biggest inspiration is to keep in mind that we can bring the playful spirit of games to any type of person, through simple, affordable, and super fun products. As ours are platform games, we have to mention our biggest influences: Super Mario World, Super Meat Boy, Celeste, and Kirby. All of these have incredible mechanics and game feel that were certainly inspiring for our games.

What has the developmental process been like? It’s been great! We are a team of eight people who work remotely and we are all passionate about what we do. Always seeking to learn more and grow together.

How close are we to seeing the finished products? Both games are almost ready to be released. Only a few artistic details are missing. We are already testing the final versions with people from our Discord server to make everything with the best experience possible.

What has been the most exciting aspect of developing both games? The most exciting part is seeing the number of people that we are captivating with our games that haven’t even been released yet. There are people who have been accompanying us for a long time, giving feedback and supporting our work. It is very gratifying to receive this support.

What has been the most challenging aspect of developing both games? The biggest challenge, I believe, is to manage everything so that all we’ve planned for comes out in the best way possible. The challenge in Super Mombo Quest, for example, is making this huge game a reality. The final version will have approximately two hundred and fifty levels. We are producing the biggest game ever made by the company!

How well have both games been received so far? We were surprised by the number of people who were captivated by our games. At TikTok, for example, we were able to build a community of more than 30k people, and we brought over 1,5k to our Discord server. They are always supporting the development, giving feedback, and testing versions so that everything is fine.

What platforms are you looking to bring the games to? We are looking to bring them to computers (at Steam), Mobiles (Android and iOS), and consoles (such as Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation).

Have there been any ideas at this stage of development that have since been scrapped or reworked where both games are concerned? Throughout the development process, there were things that didn’t work and that needed to be redone. In Super Mombo Quest, for example, we changed the main currency of the game and the mechanics related to it in the middle of development.

Has the studio been mindful of the influx of Metroidvania and rogue-lite titles within the indie scene in order to make this game stand out among the many others?

We produce games that we have had in mind for a long time. The character Mombo, for example, appeared in my graduation work. We developed and learned more about platformers, which today is one of our specialties. But we are always attentive to trends and trying to predict what will be best received by the public.

If you had the opportunity to develop a game with any company or any franchise, which would it be, and why? Aiming high, I believe with Nintendo. It is a company with young spirited games that inspired me a lot and were part of my youth.

What’s next for Orube Game Studios following the release of Dwarf Journey and Super Mombo Quest? We still don’t know for sure how the next project will be, but we intend it to be one of the big ones. You will have to follow us on social media to find out!

Are there any other genres of gaming that Orube Game Studios have thought of working on in the future? We are planning to make a multiplayer RPG. There is nothing right yet, but it’s a wish that we have for the near future.

Do you have any advice for aspiring developers that may be reading this? Currently, Super Mombo Quest has more than two hundred levels, which we consider to be a large scope. However, before producing it, we released several smaller games. The main tip for those who are starting is: make small and simple games. Understand the process and be very aware of how long it takes to produce a game. A game of scope or complexity greater than the team’s capacity can take a long time to produce, increasing its cost and reducing the chances of profit. Sometimes it even happens that the project is not launched because there is no budget to complete, or even that the producers give up on development.

Where on the Internet can people find you? You can find us on Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram @OrubeGameStudio! You can join our Discord server too. Here is our Linktree so you can find us everywhere https://linktr.ee/orubegamestudio.

Do you have anything else to add? I think that for those who are looking to live from games, it’s important to know that it’s a very competitive market. Currently, it’s difficult to undertake in the area without having accumulated prior knowledge, much because of the lack of incentives in the sector in some countries. On the other hand, we have an industry under construction and with a lot of potential. More and more companies are consolidating and creating job opportunities for those looking to work in the environment. The game market is growing and will grow for many years to come. With intelligence, dedication, and a little creativity, it is possible to live from games!

I’d like to thank Pedro for taking the time out to answer what questions I have as well as providing a very unique insight into the competition that comes with taking the plunge into indie development. It has indeed become an extremely competitive market over the last few gaming generations, as I have witnessed firsthand, but both Super Mombo Quest and Dwarf Journey look to be strong competitors in the plethora of indie games in their genres and I wish them the best of luck with them both, and I hope you guys enjoyed learning more about these two potentially game-changing titles.

Dwarf Journey review – hard to stop playing

Quality Spanish indie roguelite whether on steam or android , this is Dwarf Journey

The game development scenario has been changing in Spain, even far from big productions, the scenario has been well represented in independent games that show the potential of the Spanish scenario, giving up realistic 3D graphics and applying a lot of creativity to create fantastic works.

The Spanish Dwarf Journey tells the story of a strong and wise warrior named Gallar, who for a glimpse of the end of his life, went in search of a way to continue to enjoy worldly pleasures for all eternity. Ancient writings say that in the Vale of Eternity there is a mystical cave that holds a lost relic capable of granting eternal life to the brave who find it. Armed with his ax and inseparable pickaxe, Gallar sets out for the northern mountains on an epic adventure that could cost him his life, or guarantee it forever.

Lots of action in the roguelite platform format, where the levels are built randomly and with each playthrough you'll have a path and rooms filled with completely different monsters.

As our hero Gallar explores and defeats enemies in the Mystical Cave of Eternity Valley, growing stronger and stronger, he still collects blueprints for weapons and armor to be forged at the village blacksmith. This forge uses the minerals that are also collected in the cave, they are the currency of the game and are divided into bronze, silver, gold and iron, and are used in the forge and improvement of equipment.

Dwarf Journey review – hard to stop playing

Uniting the attributes that can be chosen in the village by leveling up, the armor and weapons and the runes. It creates the possibility for the player to assemble a build that most identifies him/herself to overcome the challenges and reach the end of the game, whether with a photo in speed, strength, critical etc.

When exploring the levels of Dwarf Journey, you can still find a kind of totem called Blessing of the Gods, which will grant you an increase in some attribute, however, when you die this buff is reset.

Dwarf Journey review – hard to stop playing

The feeling of evolution is noticeable, with each new entry into the cave, with each new level, with each new upgrade in weapons, armor or equipped rune, however, the monsters also get stronger when entering the deeper levels of the cave, which is divided into 4 different biomes, containing 4 bosses.

Dwarf Journey is a short game, an average of 7 hours is enough to beat the 4 bosses, with a simple and dynamic gameplay, it's easy to start playing 30min and find yourself still playing after 2 hours (this happened a lot to me). Cheap, simple, fun and good for platinum, great request for those who enjoy the roguelite genre.

Heat-, drought-tolerant coconut varieties eyed in research

The Philippine coconut production is threatened by the rising dry spells and droughts linked to climate change.

To help the coconut industry adapt to the changing climate conditions and to prevent further damage, a project is underway to identify heat- and drought-tolerant coconut varieties

The project, “Evaluation of Coconut Accessions at Philippine Coconut Authority-Zamboanga Research Center (PCA-ZRC) for Heat and Drought Tolerance Toward Hybridization,” was led by Joel Gerone B. Larupay of PCA-ZRC.

The project is a stepping stone toward developing climate-resilient coconut varieties.

It aims to assess coconut palms’ potential and varietal responses during heat and drought stresses.

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology funds the four-year project through the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan’s (CFIDP) Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP) Research. The DOST-PCAARRD recently reviewed the project.

During the review, Larupay reported that his team was able to organize and validate the weather and yield data of 16 hybrids and traditional varieties (14 dwarf and 14 tall) as potential heat and drought-tolerant coconuts for its Year 1 implementation.

The activity was part of the pre-screening and validation process of the accessions using historical yield and weather data recorded at PCA-ZRC genebank.

Initial findings from the activity indicate that San Isidro Green Dwarf (SNID) showed the highest nut per palm ratio in 2014.

However, both SNID and Malayan Red Dwarf (MRD) recorded the lowest copra per palm ratio in 2019.

Among the tall varieties, Baybay Tall-Advanced Generation (BAYT-AG) and Bago Oshiro Tall exhibited the highest nuts per palm in 2014 and 2018, respectively.

Markham Valley Tall recorded the lowest number of nuts per palm in 2020.

Copra per palm peaked in 2014 for BAYT-AG but hit the lowest in 2020 for the same variety.

To improve the project’s implementation, Science and Technology (S&T) Consultant Violeta N. Villegas suggested considering other indicative traits of other crops correlated to heat and drought stress as additional parameters.

The development of heat and drought-tolerant varieties toward improved farm productivity is expected to benefit millions of coconut farmers, particularly from areas heavily impacted by drought and extreme temperature levels.

DOST Region IX Rep. Thelma E. Diego and representatives from PCA’s Research and Development Branch, Region IX Regional Office, and CFIDP Project Management Office attended the project review held via videoconferencing.

Director Leilani D. Pelegrina led the activity with Crops Research Division staff, including Industry Strategic S&T Program Manager for Coconut Alissa Carol M. Ibarra.

The report of Larupay’s team was validated during a field visit held recently at PCA-ZRC, San Ramon, Zamboanga City.

‘Spy x Family Code: White’ Review: Espionage and Culinary Adventure Collide in an Amusing Anime Spinoff

Takashi Katagiri, who directed season 2 of the series, continues the characters' journey with some inconsequential fun in the franchise's first feature.

Spy x Family Code: White

“ Spy x Family Code: White” is a fun, accessible jumping-on point for anyone unfamiliar with the “Spy x Family” anime, or the manga on which it’s based. However, in slowing down to let newcomers catch up, it tends to lack momentum. The plot isn’t strictly tied to the the comic or the show’s two seasons (it’s yet to be renewed for a third), but it picks up with the same basic premise: a found family with secret lives and abilities, which they keep guarded from one another, while a non-specific political conflict looms on the horizon.

Popular on Variety

In fact, while the dangers of this conflict brew in the background, Loid, Yor and Anya set off on an mostly unrelated, much more whimsical adventure that feels only tangentially connected to the larger conflict (and doesn’t actually collide with it until nearly an hour in). In order to help Anya get closer to her target classmate, Loid plans to help her win a baking competition at school, for which he suggests making a famous, tart-like dessert native to a snowy, Swiss-inspired region. He has covert reasons for wanting to travel there, but the confectionary contest ends up being a good excuse to keep the family together for most of the film.

Director Takashi Katagiri , who also helmed the show’s second season, takes a farcical approach to this unserious plot set against a deathly serious backdrop. Scenes of grocery shopping at a winter market arrive with the bustling intensity of a reconnaissance mission, while lists of ingredients are handled and presented with all the pomp and circumstance of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. Before long, an overtly fascist military leader crosses paths with the family and not only steals their fancy dessert, but secretly threatens to plunge the world into war — two consequences the movie treats with equal weight and urgency. It’s all a bit goofy, but it means to be.

“Spy x Family Code: White” is far more chuckle-worthy than laugh-out-loud funny, but there’s an innocent, adolescent charm to even its jokes that miss the mark. The big-screen budget allows Katagiri a sense of fluidity and visual freedom, so he presents action scenes in dynamic motion (compared to the show’s more static sequences). While the recurring gags rarely extend beyond poop jokes, kids in the audience will probably get a kick out of the whole affair. The film does try to be serious and sentimental at times — often to no avail — but at least it’s never boring.

I love when Spy x Family veers into slice-of-life drama. I like seeing super duper capable spy Loid Forger and lethal assassin Yor navigate mundane activities like cooking dinner or planning date nights. I’m giddy when telepathic Anya uses her powers in a dodgeball match. I’m sure there are fans that prefer the more action-heavy, spy-thriller episodes, but I like when studios Wit and Cloverworks keep it chill. With 20 episodes a season, the anime has the space to deftly balance these two tones.

Spy x Family Code: White tries to dance that dance without the same rhythm. The new movie clocks in at almost two hours, but no matter what type of Spy x Family fan you are, only one half of it will be a delight and the other will be a slog.

[ Ed. note: This review contains some spoilers for Spy x Family ]

Anya, a small pink-haired girl, runs through a village market

In Spy x Family Code: White , the Forger family goes on vacation to an idyllic mountain village. There is a big ulterior motive for this: Anya’s newest class assignment involves cooking a dessert, and if she bakes the best dessert, she’ll get a coveted Stella, the school’s premier academic prize. And since she needs as many Stellas as possible to secure a spot at an elite party, where her family can meet the prime minister, Loid decides the best strategy is to research the headmaster’s favorite dessert hands-on.

At the same time, the future of Operation Strix is up in the air. Loid really wants Anya to win this contest so that he can have leverage to stay on the assignment. Oh, and, thanks to a misunderstanding, Yor thinks Loid might be cheating on their (fake) marriage.

Directed by Spy x Family episode director Takashi Katagiri, the first half of the movie involves a lot of lighthearted shenanigans, with some spy stuff sprinkled in. It’s my ideal ratio. Loid, Yor, Anya, and precognitive family dog Bond traverse across this mountain village, which looks like something out of a Hallmark movie, looking for ingredients so that the chef at the restaurant can make the dessert. This, of course, also involves Loid using his spy-trained marksmanship to beat a carnival game so he can snag an elusive bottle of orange liqueur and Yor accidentally kicking Loid out of a ferris wheel car with her super strong assassin legs when he tries to kiss her.

And while the shenanigans are happening, there are also some nice threads about family and spending time with one another. Loid wants to handle everything by himself, but Yor insists that they need to do things together as a family, because that’s what will be important in the end. Anya’s worried about Operation Strix falling apart and possibly losing her family because of it.

Yor Forger, a dark-haired woman, about to fight

But there are hints of a larger plotline, involving the military of Ostania and some crucial piece of intel that could ignite a war. At first it’s woven into the background, but it ramps up suddenly toward the back half of the movie, and the tone shifts into heavier action and thriller mode.

Yes, there are still a bunch of funny gags (including a prolonged joke about Anya trying to hold her poop in, which is far funnier than it sounds on paper), but there’s also a lot of kicking and explosions and a whole lot of complicated made-up political issues (which in true Anime OVA fashion are resolved neatly so they won’t really affect the next season). I’m sure this is exciting for a certain type of Spy x Family fan, but I spent the second half of the movie daydreaming about what the plot could’ve been if the Forgers spent the next half hour trying to make the overly complicated dessert instead. I know there are people out there who would want the dessert plotline sped up.

As a TV show, Spy x Family expertly handles these tone changes. Having 20-plus episode seasons means a nice balance of both the sillier and the more serious episodes — and because the episodes clock in at half an hour, it never feels like too much focus on one thing. But as a movie, Spy Family Code: White can’t strike that balance. Each half of the movie represents a different aspect of Spy x Family ’s appeal , and each half is quite good for what it’s supposed to be. They just don’t gel together at feature length. When the tone shifts, it locks in and doesn’t really have as much give as the show. Still, no matter what type of Spy x Family fan you are, you’ll enjoy at least half of the movie.

Spy Family Code: White is out in theaters today.
