Itineraries

Brindisi, italy.

Known as the “Gateway to the East,” Brindisi is one of the largest cities in Italy’s Apulia region and one of the most active trading hubs in the country. Located on the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy, Brindisi will greet you with its crystal-clear waters and historic city views. After the bombings of World War II, the city spent many years rebuilding and now hosts a unique mix of historic and contemporary architecture, including churches and castles like Castello Alfonsino, the Church of Santa Maria del Casale, Santa Maria del Casale, and the Forte a Mare Castle. Beautiful beaches, like Lido Azzurro and Torre Guaceto, are also close by and will offer you a great place to relax.

Bordeaux (Pauillac), France

A destination for wine-lovers, food-lovers, and city ramblers, southern French city and wine region Bordeaux will offer you much more than only its famous red wine. With stunning classical, neo-classical, and urban architecture, historical monuments, incredible art museums, and a buzzing dining and drinking scene, this port city and UNESCO World Heritage site rivals the likes of Paris.

Kavala, Greece

Tucked into the northeastern coast of mainland Greece, just below the Bulgarian border, the hillside city of Kavala overlooks the Aegean Sea and is the main seaport of eastern Macedonia. Kavala will offer you a surprising mix of history, culture, and architecture—archeological sites, monuments, cobblestone streets, wooden balconies lined with flowers, colorful palaces, and hilltop fortresses—as well as diverse landscapes like lush wetlands, lagoons, inland lakes, beaches, and diverse flora and fauna.

Trieste, Italy

Old-World Trieste—a city that draws attention from travelers around the world—sits at a northeastern corner of Italy and brings together the Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures of the Adriatic Sea. The Roman and Byzantine empires ruled here once upon a time, and their influences can be seen in the different types of architecture of the cityscape. You can experience Trieste's many cultures through its cozy coffeehouses, seafood restaurants, open-air plazas, Old World churches, and museums.

Volos, Greece

Volos, Greece's newest port city, is located at the foot of Mount Pelion and the innermost point of the Pagasetic Gulf. As an important industrial center and bridge between Europe and Asia, this lively seafront destination offers you many things to discover—local cultural activities, museums, cafes, restaurants, and an exciting nightlife area. You will also enjoy its unique architecture, nearby lush mountain ranges, and golden beaches.

Find Your Cruise to Europe

Why should i go on a cruise to europe.

The continent's many well-developed waterways make cruises one of the best ways to visit favorites like Budapest and Paris cruises. Embarking on a European 5-day cruise in 2024 or 7-day cruise lets you explore everything the old country has to offer. Europe's diversity and rich history mean you can pack a baker's dozen of cultures and countries into even a short 3-day cruise. Some river cruises in Europe may even stop at more than 50 cities before the journey is made. Travel within the European Union is remarkably easy and cruise lines take full advantage of that.

How can I find cheap cruises to Europe?

The best way to find cheap cruises to Europe from the United States on Expedia is to sort your search results by price, automatically putting the most affordable cruises to Europe from the US at the top of the list, such as a 3-day all-inclusive cruise. It can also be helpful to be flexible with your travel dates, letting you choose from various options. A common strategy to save money is to book Europe cruises far in advance.

Which cruise lines to Europe are available?

Some of the best cruise lines to Europe include Viking and MSC cruises to Europe, both of which are famous for luxury offerings like lavish suites and world-famous live entertainment. Choose your desire length, a 3-day cruise, a 5-day cruise or 7-day cruise. Many cruise lines offer journeys through the continent, beginning at ports like Paris and traveling throughout Europe to visit countries like Germany, Spain, Italy, and even Greece. The Viking grand tour of Europe cruise takes you through the heart of Europe from Amsterdam to Budapest , and the Cunard Queen Mary 2 offers a wealth of short Europe cruises.

How can I find Europe cruise deals?

To find Europe cruise deals, look for the green discount indicator text above the price estimate on the search results page. This shows the discount available for any given cruise on offer. You can also sort your options by everything from cabin experience and itinerary to specific ports of call such as Amsterdam or Paris , or longer experiences such as a Danube river 7-day cruise in 2024to Budapest.

What should I look out for on a boat cruise to Europe?

Make sure you check your cruise itinerary details to see if your favorites are included. Whether you choose to travel the Rhine and Danube cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest or float along the French Riviera from Spain to Italy, the best part of a Europe cruise is how many amazing cities you have to choose from. From a 1-night France to Italy cruise, traveling from Marseille to Genoa , or a 3-day cruise from Italy to Greece to stop by Civitavecchia, Naples , and Piraeus, Europe's got it all.

What are the best Europe cruise destinations?

Europe cruise destinations are as varied as the continent itself, but some of the most popular include the UK, Amsterdam , and the Mediterranean. You can easily fit 50 or more destinations into your European cruise vacation if you book one of the more extended options, such as a 7-day cruise in the Mediterranean from Barcelona. River cruises in Europe are a popular choice, and a 2-day cruise to Marseille or 7-day Portugal river cruise can also allow you to witness stunning riverfront scenery along the continent's storied rivers.

When is the best time for a cruise trip to Europe?

The best times for cruises that go to Europe tend to be the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. Spring and autumn prices are generally more affordable during the summer high season, and the weather is mild throughout most of the continent. If you’re considering a 5-day cruise in 2025 in northern Europe, such as a Norwegian fjord cruise or a cruise on the North Sea, going in the summer can offer that much-needed warmth.

How long does it take for a boat cruise to Europe?

The length of a cruise to Europe varies based on where you depart from and the length of your European cruise vacation, but if you want a 2- or 3-day cruise to Europe, you'll need to leave from somewhere on the continent. 7-day cruises to Europe are also readily available if you want to experience a wider variety of stops, but they mainly depart from Europe as well. For example, a cruise to Barcelona from Genoa will only take about a day at sea, if that. Leaving from the states, such as on a cruise to Europe from Florida, will have you on a cruise that easily lasts more than a month.

Can I book a luxury cruise to Europe?

You can find a selection of luxury cruise ships, such as Regent and Holland America Line on Expedia. A luxury cruise to Europe offers old-world extravagance, stunning amenities and high-end features, such as spa treatments and 24-hour room service in elegant, multi-room suites. The Zuiderdam ship , for example, lets you enjoy top-tier service, live performances, and even a jazz club on board, which allows you to make the most of your 4-day all-inclusive cruise

What are all-inclusive cruises to Europe like?

You'll find some of the best all-inclusive cruises to Europe from cruise lines like Celebrity and MSC . For example, you can enjoy specialty restaurants, an onsite casino, and even poolside bars that can be booked in advance on the Celebrity Constellation . A 3-day cruise in 2024to explore Europe on the MSC Virtuosa offers a full-service bar staffed by robots, circus-style performances, and even an on-board water park.

Can I get a family cruise to Europe?

A family cruise to Europe is easy to find, especially when you book with cruise lines like Carnival or Disney , where you'll find activities for adults and kids alike to enjoy featuring costumed characters and live entertainment themed around famed Disney properties representing anything from Cinderella to Aladdin or possibly even Star Wars. The Disney Dream , for example, boasts an impressive on-board water coaster, the first of its kind. Choose the length of the journey, a 3-day cruise or a 4-day cruise, according to your family’s needs. Once the adults have had their fill of the games, they can retire to the adults-only areas, such as the bar and lounge, while the kids continue with their activities.

Can I book a honeymoon cruise to Europe?

It's easy to create honeymoon cruise memories that will last a lifetime with cruise lines like Oceania and Viking . The Viking Lofn , for example, is a relatively small ship, with room for just 190 passengers. It offers sweeping river views and gourmet food for you and your partner in a supremely romantic setting, accompanied by suites of Scandinavian design. For your honeymoon, book a 7-day cruise deal in 2024 to Europe that takes you and your partner to some of the most romantic destinations in the world, including iconic hubs of romance such as Paris, Rome, and cozy cabins in the snow-covered Swiss Alps.

How do I book a cruise to Europe on Expedia?

To book the best Europe cruises on Expedia, simply use the filters and sorting function to narrow down the array of results to find the perfect cruise for your needs, whether it's a 7-day cruise or 3-day cruise in the Mediterranean, an Amalfi coast cruise in 2024, or a multi-city excursion along inland rivers. Once you've found the right cruise, you can book directly from Expedia after clicking the entry on your search results page. Keep an eye out for discounts marked with green text.

Do I need a passport for cruise tickets to Europe?

American citizens need a passport for a Europe cruise, especially since a lot of the most commonly booked cruises in Europe require you to fly there first. Considering the distance, a closed-loop cruise to Europe generally isn't available. If your 7-day cruise will bring you to multiple countries, be sure to check the regulations for each one and secure your passport well in advance of your travels.

Can I cancel my cruise to Europe?

If you changed your mind about traveling, go to the My Trips page of your Expedia account to cancel. Before this, check the cruise line information page for the service you booked. Many cruise lines charge cancellation fees or may only offer partial refunds and checking in advance can save you unpleasant surprises. The refund amount typically depends on how far in advance you cancel your cruise to Europe.

Why should I book a Europe cruise with Expedia?

Whether you book a 4-day cruise or 7-day cruise in 2024 with Expedia, you'll have access to a wide range of cruise lines and ships to choose from that let you customize your experience. It's easy to see which cruises to Europe are offering discounts by looking for the green text in the search results. One Key members may even earn points on eligible bookings, so sign up for free today if you haven't already.

About Europe Cruises

Europe is a land of breathtaking beauty, cultural charm, fine dining, and rich history. In just one European cruise, you can experience Nordic hospitality in Oslo, stroll around the Colosseum in Rome or take a shore excursion to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

This beautiful continent is surrounded by water on its three sides which gives the cruisers incredible opportunities to choose an itinerary that best suits their dream vacation. Your Europe cruise can depart from Barcelona , Copenhagen , Southampton, Le Havre, Hamburg and many other European ports.

With so much to see and do, cruise lines often separate their European itineraries by regions:

Baltic and Scandinavian Cruises

There’s no better way to explore Northern Europe than with a Baltic cruise. Drift through the awe-inspiring fjords of Norway, wander around the fairytale town of Tallinn in Estonia or admire the architecture of St. Petersburg’s canals.

Cruises to the Baltic and Scandinavia are largely limited to the sunny summer months of July and August.

Mediterranean Cruises

The Mediterranean is probably one of the most popular regions in Europe. You can choose to explore the Western Mediterranean by pulling into port in Barcelona or Civitavecchia, taking you to the south of France and Spain. The Eastern Mediterranean may take you to the ancient ruins of Athens, the charming towns of Montenegro and the atmospheric islands of the Cyclades.

Many cruise lines offer itineraries of 7- 10 days or longer, but for those seeking a shorter vacation, MSC and Costa also offer 3-4- or 5-day cruises .

British Isles Cruises

Don’t forget that the glorious, green British Isles also welcome cruise liners throughout the year. Sail past medieval castles, charming coastal towns and spectacular highland vistas. Your Europe cruise could also take you to majestic Iceland, where days ashore promise the chance to glimpse breathtaking waterfalls and dramatic volcanoes.

The continent of Europe is like a puzzle waiting to be solved by you. The nearly 50 nations each offer something different, perhaps a wonderful delicacy or an exciting tale of conquering knights and quirky princesses. The continent is divided into many regions. There is Northern Europe where you’ll find Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Denmark, with their rugged natural landscapes and ultra-modern architecture. The Mediterranean encompasses nations like Spain, Italy and Greece. These countries have wonderful traditions from flamenco dancing to the creation of pizza, not to mention the beautiful beaches along the coast line. Things to Do on a Cruise to Europe

Europe may be one of the smallest continents, but it packs a punch with several countries that have had long and famous histories. There are castles, cathedrals and exciting monuments. No matter whether you visit the countries and ports of the Mediterranean, Scandinavia or the cities that line Europe’s famed rivers, you’ll find an interesting piece of history, an incredible site and some food to die for. Featured below are some of the best ways to spend your time cruising through Europe:

Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam

  • Traipse through the fields of tulips in the Keukenhof Gardens, just outside of Amsterdam. Each March through May their site opens up with more than 7 million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
  • Experience the amazing natural delights of Scandinavia. In the summer time they have extremely long days, where the sun seems to never set. In the winter, head north where you can see the Aurora Borealis on a clear night.

Louvre in Paris, France

  • Live the glamorous life with a trip to the Cote d’Azur and Monaco. Here you can lounge on the beach or get dressed to the nines for an evening of gambling at the famous Monte Carlo Casino.
  • Discover great artwork at sites like the Louvre and the Sistine Chapel. Works include masterpieces by the great European artists Van Gogh, Monet, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Da Vinci, among many others.

Gondola ride in Venice, Italy

  • Spend a romantic evening on a gondola ride under the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal in Venice, a magical city where boats replace cars.
  • In England you can spend a full day at the Tower of London, a complex of buildings that houses the royal armory and the royal jewels. This is also the spot where King Henry VIII had his wives beheaded, and where the eventual Queen Elizabeth was imprisoned.

cruise in europe 2024

  • Ports of Call

Few places in the world pack in as much culture per square meter as Europe does… and nobody packs fun into Europe like Carnival does! There’s so much variety across the continent and its islands, and with Carnival you have options for experiencing many of these places by sea. Cruise the Mediterranean and soak in the espresso-fueled, yet somehow unhurried, cobblestone-lined street life from a sidewalk café. Snow-capped peaks go great with postcard-perfect glaciers across Northern Europe destinations… plus you’ll find some of the greenest British Isle views on the same itinerary! Western Europe cruises visit the region from which the explorers of the New World kicked off their voyages. If your head is spinning with all the possibilities… great! That means you have choices — and believe us, any one of them is the right choice!

  • See some of nature’s most dramatic landscapes.
  • Explore historical buildings, ruins and cathedrals that are older than many countries.
  • Check out museums and statues... and always read the plaques.

Top 5 Best Cruises in Europe for 2024: Luxury & Adventure

Dreaming of gliding through the Mediterranean or weaving through the Norwegian fjords? Europe’s diverse tapestry of cultures and landscapes makes it an ideal destination for a cruise, and 2024’s lineup is more exciting than ever. I’ve sailed the seas and scoped out the best cruises that’ll make your European adventure unforgettable.

From luxury liners decked out with every amenity to intimate vessels that slip into lesser-known ports, there’s a perfect European cruise for every traveler. I’m here to guide you through the top picks for 2024, ensuring your next voyage is nothing short of spectacular.

Get ready to set sail on a journey that combines relaxation with exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or planning your first maritime escape, my insights will help you navigate the best European cruises of 2024.

The Mediterranean Magic

When I think about cruising in Europe, the Mediterranean Sea instantly springs to mind. It’s a haven where crystal-clear waters meet ancient history, and modern luxury intersects with timeless beauty. I’ve sailed these waters and can attest to the Mediterranean’s allure, drawing in travelers with its captivating mix of sun-kissed beaches and storied past.

Embarking on a Mediterranean cruise is like unwrapping a treasure trove of Europe’s best. Italy’s coastline offers much more than just stellar pizza and pasta; it serves up historic ports like Rome’s Civitavecchia and the Renaissance jewel of Livorno, giving you direct access to Florence and Pisa. Greece , on the other hand, is a cruisers’ paradise with islands such as Mykonos and Santorini, where white-washed buildings and sapphire domes are as breath-taking as the legends that accompany them.

But the magic doesn’t stop there. The Mediterranean is home to Hidden Gems such as Montenegro’s Kotor—a fjord-like bay tucked into the Balkans’ mountains, and Croatia’s Dubrovnik, where the ancient city walls whisper tales of old. With the mild climate and the warm hospitality of locals, it’s no wonder these destinations are becoming increasingly popular.

To help you plan your 2024 cruise, here’s a snapshot of the most anticipated Mediterranean cruises:

  • Viking Ocean Cruises: Known for their immersive itineraries and inclusive experiences
  • Celebrity Cruises: Offers modern luxury combined with authentic cultural tours
  • MSC Cruises: Fantastic for families and those looking for a cosmopolitan atmosphere

Each line brings its unique flair to the voyage, but what they all share is an undeniable engagement with the Mediterranean’s vibrant spirit. Whether you’re a history buff or a sun worshiper, these cruises are brimming with activities tailored to every interest. And let’s not forget the onboard experience—fine dining, exceptional service, and state-of-the-art facilities mean you’ll be sailing through paradise in style. The key to the best European cruise in 2024 is finding the balance between the allure of the ports and the pleasures of life aboard.

Exploring the Norwegian Fjords

Venturing further north, Europe’s diversity continues to astonish me with the stunning Norwegian Fjords. Pegged as once-in-a-lifetime experiences , these cruises offer breathtaking scenery, steeped in enchanting Norse history. The fjords, with their sheer rock faces and cascading waterfalls, are a masterpiece of nature’s artistry. Hurtigruten and Viking Cruises specialize in these routes, ensuring that every journey is intimate and immersive.

While on these cruises, I find the range of excursions to be as impressive as the panoramic views. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Kayaking in the still waters of Geirangerfjord
  • Hiking through the rugged trails of Flam
  • Witnessing the majestic wildlife, including sea eagles and puffins
  • Visiting historic Viking settlements and learning about Scandinavian culture

One aspect that differentiates the Norwegian Fjord cruises from the Mediterranean voyages is the Midnight Sun . It’s an extraordinary phenomenon where the sun barely dips below the horizon, illuminating the Scandinavian landscape with a surreal glow. Some voyages even venture into the Arctic Circle, offering a chance to glimpse the ethereal Northern Lights.

Moreover, the smaller ship sizes that navigate the fjords make the journey exceptionally serene. They effortlessly glide through narrow passages, allowing for up-close explorations that larger vessels simply cannot access. This intimacy with nature, coupled with the eco-friendly practices many of these boats adopt, makes for a sustainable and awe-inspiring exploration.

As I delve into the offerings of these cruises, the convergence of luxury and adventure stands out. From gourmet dining with regional Nordic specialties to plush staterooms boasting panoramic windows, every detail is catered to enrich your Nordic adventure. Exploring the Norwegian Fjords isn’t just about seeing the sights; it’s about creating memories that resonate long after the voyage.

Luxury Liners: A Taste of Opulence

When I explore the wide array of cruise options for my next European adventure, I’m often drawn to the luxury liners that promise not just a journey but an experience wrapped in opulence. These vessels are a testament to the high seas’ grandeur, boasting an ambiance that’s both exclusive and indulgent.

Aboard these floating palaces, every detail is meticulously curated to offer a superior experience. I can vouch for their personalized service —it’s truly exemplary. Staff are attentive to every preference, ensuring that every moment feels bespoke and treasured. The staterooms and suites redefine elegance with their plush interiors and state-of-the-art amenities, all designed with the utmost comfort in mind. Think of it as your private retreat after a day of exploring the European capitals.

Gastronomy aboard luxury liners is another level of delights. They feature Michelin-starred chefs and menus that could rival the finest restaurants on land. Whether it’s a seven-course meal or a light, artistically crafted snack, the focus is always on quality and flavor. The wine lists are extensive, and the sommeliers expertly pair every dish to enhance the dining experience.

Beyond the exceptional dining and lodging, what sets these cruises apart is their commitment to exclusive experiences:

  • Private tours of hidden gems in historic cities
  • Behind-the-scenes access to renowned museums
  • Onboard lectures and workshops with experts
  • Tailor-made excursions to suit personal interests

It’s the small touches, like champagne toasts on private balconies or a pianist playing your favorite tune as you gaze out at the Mediterranean or the captivating Norwegian landscapes, that create a symphony of luxurious moments. With a 2024 itinerary that’s likely to be as rich as the experiences they offer, luxury liners are poised to deliver the best of European cruises, where every moment is a masterpiece of upscale travel.

For those looking to truly unwind, onboard spas offer treatments that blend ancient techniques with modern wellness trends. You’ll find yourself rejuvenated, ready for the next day’s adventure.

Intimate Cruises: Discovering Hidden Gems

When I think about the best cruises in Europe for 2024, the concept of intimate cruises instantly springs to mind. These are about much more than just travel; they’re about connections— connecting with local cultures and uncovering the secrets that mainstream cruises often bypass .

On an intimate cruise, I’m often aboard smaller vessels, which provide exclusive access to secluded ports unreachable by larger ships. These charming, often family-owned boats treat guests to an authentic experience, where personalized attention is a given and every guest feels seen. Smaller group sizes mean more one-on-one interactions, creating an atmosphere where friendships can flourish.

What sets these intimate cruises apart is the attention to detail. Here’s what I’ve gathered:

  • Personalized Itineraries: Crafting journeys around my interests, whether it’s culinary delights, historical sights, or natural wonders.
  • Expert Guides: Local guides enlighten guests with profound knowledge and passion for their hometowns.
  • Exclusive Activities: Opportunities to engage in things like private cooking classes with renowned chefs or visits to hidden bays for a refreshing swim.

During my trips, I’ve witnessed untouched landscapes and dined under the stars on serene decks, all the while indulging in the stories and laughter of local hosts. The experience often revolves around cultural immersion and sustainable travel practices. I’ve snorkeled in crystal-clear waters, explored ancient ruins without the crowds, and visited local artisans to see how traditional crafts are made first-hand.

These intimate voyages sail me back in time—from the medieval alleys of Croatia’s coastal towns to the mosaic-laden streets of a sleepy Sicilian village. They showcase Europe’s rich tapestry of history in a way large-scale cruises cannot compare.

Let’s not forget the gastronomic offerings . I find myself savoring dishes that taste of the region’s soul—a true testament to the origins of these culinary creations. Intimate cruises have granted me an all-access pass to an Europe that remains untouched by mass tourism—a curated experience that echoes luxury and authenticity.

  • Destinations : Galway, Cork, Inverness, Edinburgh
  • Duration : 12 nights

Key features include:

  • Intimate ship size

Baltic Sea Voyage

The Nordic Legends Exploration by Viking Voyages is a contender that ties history, luxury, and the stark beauty of the Baltic together. With stops in cities steeped in Viking history and opportunities to delve into the local culture, this cruise promises a rich tapestry of experiences. The ship’s design, influenced by Scandinavian elegance, ensures a tranquil retreat after days spent exploring.

  • Departure : Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Destinations : Stockholm (Sweden), Tallinn (Estonia), Saint Petersburg (Russia)

Choosing the perfect European cruise for 2024 can be as thrilling as the voyage itself. Whether you’re sipping fine wines aboard the Sea Sirens Cruises, uncovering Celtic tales with Celtic Charms Cruise Line, or tracing Viking routes with Viking Voyages, each adventure promises a blend of sophistication and cultural enrichment. I’m confident that these top picks will elevate your travel experience, offering not just a getaway but a journey into the heart of Europe’s most captivating destinations. This Italian Cruise Line Has European Sailings for Under $300 This Summer — When to Book

Cruises must be booked by April 11.

cruise in europe 2024

Courtesy of Costa Cruises

Italian cruise line Costa Cruises wants travelers to live la dolce vita with a spring sale that has sailings to the Mediterranean and northern Europe starting at less than $300.

The sale, which must be booked by April 11, has cruises starting at just $299 per person for double occupancy and is valid on select trips from May to November traveling to Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, and beyond, the cruise line shared with Travel + Leisure . To book, travelers must look for the “Costa’s Spring Sale” icon on the company’s website .

“For travelers ready to plan their next European adventure, our ‘Spring Sale’ offers reduced fares to some of our most desired destinations in the Mediterranean and northern Europe ,” Erik Jamarillo, the head of sales for Costa Cruises North America, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Costa is looking forward to more incredible adventures in these two regions, and we’re inviting travelers to join us to experience Italian-style cruising at an exceptional value.”

Travel on a weeklong cruise from Civitavecchia, just outside Rome, to Marseille, France, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and more. Or visit Istanbul, Mykonos, and Ibiza on a roundtrip cruise from Athens.

In May, Costa will sail nine to 23-day cruises in northern Europe complete with stops in Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Scotland. And in July, the company will add week-long cruises to Denmark, Germany, and the Norwegian fjords.

The sale also includes voyages that feature the company’s new “Sea Destinations,” which incorporates the ports the ship visits into onboard programming, like offering a “typical Caprese breakfast” in front of the Faraglioni rocks of Capri before disembarking in Naples, or hosting “a hippy chic party” after visiting Ibiza .

Costa Cruises, which is part of the Carnival Corporation & plc, operates nine ships and sails around the world from the Mediterranean and northern Europe to the Caribbean, South America, and more.

‘Pearl of the Adriatic Sea’ named Europe’s leading cruise destination

Dubrovnik Harbor

We all know we’re in the midst of a cruise renaissance, what with Royal Caribbean’s nine-month journey getting TikTok talking and Virgin Voyages launching month-long trips, too.

But, for those looking for voyages closer to home, a city in Croatia has been named as Europe’s Leading Cruise destination.

Dubrovnik scooped the title at the World Travel Awards 2024 ceremony, held in Berlin earlier this month, for the third time – following wins in 2021 and 2023.

And it couldn’t have come at a better time, with Croatia  also crowned as Lonely Planet’s  top European destination to explore in 2024.

The spot in southern Croatia attracts 1.5 million every year with its picturesque streets and fascinating history (being one of the last remaining walled towns in the world). In fact, the city’s Old Town is even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s a popular location for Game of Thrones fans too, as the destination essentially is King’s Landing and is peppered with reminders at every turn, including Cersei Lannister’s walk of shame steps.

The city, often dubbed as ‘Pearl of the Adriatic Sea’, also played host to the HBO show’s cast and crew many times.

Dubrovnik Old Town

What's a cruise around Croatia really like?

Metro’s Lifestyle Editor Rachel Moss shared how she find exploring Croatia on a cruise last summer…

She said: ‘The tiny town of Trogir became an early favourite thanks to its laid back charm and stunning mix of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. We stumbled across a classical concert in the park and spent the evening perched on a children’s slide, listening to talented musicians perform under moonlight.

‘Then there was Hvar, a cosmopolitan port made famous by a young Prince Harry, who jumped fully clothed into a swimming pool in one of the island’s clubs.

‘By day, you’ll want to visit the Fortica Fortress, where a 20-minute uphill walk will reward you with stunning views of the terracotta roofs and crystal clear waters below.

‘By night, Hvar is both a place to see and be seen, the warm lighting making both it – and its guests – more beautiful. Dig out a dress and heels and join the elegant crowds visiting elegant cocktail bars. Don’t bother trying to sleep before midnight.

‘Korčula is another island where old meets new. Known as ‘Little Dubrovnik,’ there’s signs of mediaeval majesty and its former Venetian rule on every corner, but without the crowds and Game of Thrones gift shops that have taken over its larger counterpart.

‘With less character than the others, the towns of Slano and Vis were two we could have missed, though we did enjoy a fantastic dinner at the latter (more on that later).

‘Having visited both Split and Dubrovnik before, a day was plenty of time for us to reacquaint ourselves with the larger arrival and departure ports, though first-time travellers may feel a little rushed.

‘Be sure not to miss The Peristyle within Diocletian’s Palace, a square in the centre of Split where you can sip wine and listen to live music. History buffs will want to walk the city walls of Dubrovnik, but to avoid the crowds (and the heat), watch the tourists go by with a coffee down one of the many shaded side streets.

‘The cruise package includes an excursion each afternoon, with the flexibility to dip in and out if you fancy splintering away from the group. We chose to skip a couple of the walking tours, realising quickly that we preferred to explore the old towns solo. But there are a few group activities you won’t want to miss.’

Read more about her trip here …

Naturally, Dubrovnik’s port has become the perfect docking station for cruises – handling 600 ship calls and around 900,000 passengers annually.

However, it’s worth pointing out that – due to its popularity – Dubrovnik has also had to put tightened restrictions in place for cruise companies.

Back in 2018, the city’s mayor implemented a cap on cruise ship visits that limited the number of arriving vessels to two a day and carrying no more than 8,000 passengers between them.

Now cruise ships are shifting their itineraries away from Dubrovnik and towards the nearby city of Split instead.

Overall, it’s great to see more sustainable tourism practices in action to ensure the beauty of the city remains protected.

Dubrovnik checklist:

  • Mooch around Old Town
  • Walk the city walls
  • Take a cable car up to the summit of Mount Srđ
  • Wander around Stradun or Placa
  • Rent a kayak around the walls of the city
  • Visit the Elaphiti Islands

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

Least Expensive Times to Take a Disney Cruise in 2024

A s the new year begins, you may be thinking about travel for 2024. And maybe you're hoping a Disney Cruise is in your future! But they can be so expensive, it can be difficult to find something that might fit your budget. We've scoured all of the current Disney Cruise itineraries to find the cheapest time to take a Disney Cruise. Here are the least expensive times to take a Disney Cruise in 2024.

What's the Cheapest Time to Go on a Disney Cruise in 2024?

There are lots of ways to save money on a Disney Cruise vacation .  You can book a guaranteed cruise stateroom , pay with discounted Disney gift cards, book the onboard offer when sailing. But one of the easiest ways is to simply travel during a cheaper time. If you're able to get the time off work and/or school, there are few ways that are going to be simpler than just choosing a cheaper Disney Cruise. Here are the least expensive times to take a Disney Cruise, with

Mid January- late February

Students from kindergarten to college have gone back to school, and many people are still recovering from the holidays. A cruise during the middle parts of January, specifically after Martin Luther King Day to late February, is one of the least expensive times for a Disney Cruise in 2024.

Least Expensive times Disney Cruise in early 2024:

February 26-March 1, 2024 : Leaving out of New Orleans, rates for 2 guests start at $1740 for a 4-night cruise.

January 17-January 21, 2024:  If you're looking for a quick getaway, this 4-night sailing on the Disney Dream starts at $2266 for a party of 2, and sails out of the newly renovated Port Everglades terminal.

January 21-26, 2024:  This 5-night western Caribbean Cruise leaving from Galveston starts at just $2160 for 2 guests. This is a great deal for a 5 night cruise!

January 27- February 3, 2024:  Inside rooms with a magical porthole start at just $3687 for 2 guests on this sailing headed to the Western Caribbean.

Hurricane Season

Specifically, during the months of August and September, hurricane season can offer you some of the cheapest prices of the year. Now there are things you should know about sailing on a cruise during hurricane season .  But if you feel like you can deal with the uncertainty of the season, you'll find some of the cheapest prices of the entire year during these months.

Cheapest times for a Disney Cruise during hurricane season 2024:

September 13-16, 2024:  Looking to sail to Disney Cruise Line's newest destination, Lighthouse Point? This 3-night sailing on the magic out of Fort Lauderdale starts at just $1645 for a party of two. And it's a Halloween on the High Seas sailing, meaning you'll even get a fun theme out of it!

September 16-20, 2024:  For just $100 more (for 2 guests) than the previously mentioned cruise, you can add an extra night on this 4-night sailing from Fort Lauderdale.  Prices start at $1747 for 2.

September 7-14, 2024:  Of course you can start to see a pattern here, with the lowest prices being offered in mid-September. For those looking for a 7-night cruise to the Western Caribbean, these are some of the best prices you'll find, with staterooms starting at $3239.

August 31-September 7, 2024:  Another great deal on a 7-night cruise headed to the Eastern Caribbean this time, is the same price, at $3239 for 2 guests.

Shoulder Seasons for destinations

Every destination has what's called a shoulder season. The shoulder season varies based on the destination. But if you can plan it right, you can find some great Disney Cruise Line deals. Cruises to Alaska, for example, will generally have the cheapest prices in May and September. For Caribbean Cruises, the shoulder season lines up with the more active hurricane season months, September and October. And for European Cruises, the very beginning and very end of summer tend to be cheaper as well, May and September.

Least Expensive times for Disney Cruise during the shoulder season 2024:

Here's a look at some of the least expensive Disney Cruises for each destination's shoulder season.

Cheapest times to cruise to Alaska:

Shoulder season for Alaska is at the very beginning and very end of the cruising season. May and September will be the cheapest times to take a Disney Cruise to Alaska. They can also be the most unpredictable in terms of weather. But if you're ok with gambling on good weather, or don't really care about the weather for your cruise, this is a great time to go in terms of budget.

May 13-20, 2024:  As the first sailing of the year, you can expect to get a good deal on this cruise to Alaska. With inside rooms starting at $3487 for 2 people on this 7-night itinerary, this is one of the best ways to save money on a Disney Cruise to Alaska.

September 2-9, 2024: As one of the last sailings of the 2024 sailing season, it's also one of the cheapest you'll find to cruise to Alaska. For two guests, inside rooms start as low as $3263, with verandahs starting at $5867, which is less than many Oceanview staterooms will cost in the summer.

If neither of those dates work for you, be sure to check out dates right before and/or after each of those dates. May and September Alaska cruises are often discounted as the season nears.

Cheapest times to cruise in Europe:

Europe's shoulder season tends to be during a similar time to Alaska. Tourism peaks starting in June and all through the summer until late August and into September. As such, you can usually find some of the best deals at the very beginning and the very end of the cruise season there.  One thing to keep in mind regarding Disney Cruises to Europe: Disney charges a premium for European cruises. Your best bet is to wait until they release guaranteed rooms for these sailings, usually starting after the new year. Here's a look at some of the cheaper European cruises, including ones that in the last few cruising seasons, have been heavily discounted as sailing gets nearer.

Aug 12-16, 2024 : This 4-night cruise from Southampton to La Rochelle, France, starts at $3258 for a party of 2. Though this is not nearly as cheap as you can find a 4-night cruise to the Caribbean, for Europe, this isn't too bad of a deal. And if you can wait, it's possible for this cruise to drop in price when guaranteed rooms start to become available.

September 1-8, 2024: Sailing from Southampton, this 7-night Western Europe cruise sails to Germany, Amsterdam and Belgium.  With inside rooms starting at $4427 for 2 guests, this is an itinerary that tends to have guaranteed rooms become available as well. Due to the timing and port stops, it's generally not as easy to fill. Which means Disney will usually release guaranteed staterooms. And these are where you'll find the most savings.

September 8-15, 2024: Another 7 night cruise out of Southampton, this British Isles sailing historically has difficulty filling the ship as well. This results in guaranteed staterooms being released at a pretty good discount. Prices for 2 guests start at $4539, but we would bet that those prices will drop as 2024 progresses.

Cheapest times to Cruise to the Caribbean during the shoulder season:

As stated before, the Caribbean's shoulder season is usually during hurricane season. Since we've already mentioned when the cheapest times to sail during hurricane season are, we will include some of the other less expensive sailings during shoulder season here.

Oct 4-7, 2024: This 3-night sailing from Fort Lauderdale goes to Disney's newest destination, Lighthouse Point and is even a Halloween on the High Seas sailing! With prices starting at $1723 for 2 people, this is a great way to get your Disney Cruise fix. Yes, October is still hurricane season, so be prepared.

November 15-21, 2024:  If you're able to manage a one-way cruise, or can book a back-to-back, this 6-night sailing from San Juan to Galveston is a great deal. With prices as low as $2123 for 2 people. This cruise stops at both Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, making it perfect for guests who enjoy Disney's private destinations.

December 11-15, 2024: Another sailing out of Galveston, this 4-night sailing is even a Very Merrytime Sailing ! 2 guests can plan to spend $2007 for a 4-night cruise.

Between School Breaks

A general rule of thumb for any travel, is that it will always be more expensive when kids are out of school. Now this is solely based on traditional US school schedules. So if your school participates in year-round schooling, or if you're coming from another country, keep this in mind.

Cheapest times for a Disney Cruise between school breaks 2024:

Some of the best times to cruise with Disney is between school breaks! This usually means lower prices and lower crowds. Many people don't want to take their kids out of school at certain times. And between breaks is a great time to look for deals on Disney Cruises.

March 1-5, 2024:  If you can sail from New Orleans, you can save some serious cash. This March sailing happens to be right before most spring breaks begin. Which makes it a pretty ok bargain. Cruise fares start at $1933 for 2 guests.

March 6-10, 2024: Another cruise that happens to start just before spring break. This 4-night sailing from Galveston, Texas is a steal at $2055 for 2 people on the Disney Magic. Sailing to Mexico, it's a great pre-spring break, break.

April 12-15, 2024:  Since Easter is earlier in 2024, that means many spring breaks have been shifted as well. April will have better deals than it has in the past as a result. Since many students will be back in school mid-April, that means prices for cruises will drop too. This 3-night sailing from Fort Lauderdale starts at just $1733 for 2 guests.

April 28-May 2, 2o24:  After spring break, but before the start of summer, this 4-night Baja Cruise on the Disney Wonder can be booked for just $1932 for 2 people. Perfect for those who live on the Pacific Coast, or just want to experience it!

May 9-13, 2024:  Although this is a one-way cruise to Vancouver, and is technically the repositioning cruise for the start of Alaska Cruise season, being able to sail to Victoria, Canada is pretty awesome! Victoria is known to be a bit difficult to get to. And since Disney Cruises to Alaska don't generally stop there, this is a great opportunity to experience it. This 4-night sailing starts at $2067 for 2 people.

May 13-17, 2024:  May is the perfect time to take a Disney Cruise. Why? Because many people are gearing up for summer break. And won't take their kids out of school right before the year is over. Which means lower cruise prices and often an emptier ship! This 4-night Bahamas sailing from Fort Lauderdale starts at just $2019 for 2 people

So there you have it, some of the cheapest cruises with Disney Cruise Line for 2024. Did any of these surprise you? As always, it's important to check for discounts that are released. As well as when Guaranteed Staterooms are as well, as those tend to save you the most money.

Need help finding a Disney Cruise that's right for you? We can help you plan that ! Just fill out our no obligation form and we will be glad to help you find a cruise that suits your tastes and budget.

Maybe you're hoping a Disney Cruise is in your future! But they can be so expensive, it can be difficult to find something that might fit your budget. We've scoured all of the current Disney Cruise itineraries to find the cheapest time to take a Disney Cruise in 2024.

How to plan a beach vacation in scandinavia.

Camping on the beaches of Lofoten, Norway, is popular during the summer months.

When considering a beach vacation, Scandinavia might not be the first destination that comes to mind. However, this northern region, known for its stunning natural landscapes, also boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in Europe.

If you broaden your idea of what a beach vacation could be, Scandinavia could fit the bill. Such a break can offer a blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and outdoor activities.

Why Plan A Beach Vacation In Scandinavia?

A beach vacation in Scandinavia may not include the stereotypical features of a Mediterranean or Caribbean beach vacation, but it offers a unique appeal for those seeking something different.

On Scandinavian beaches, the emphasis is on enjoying the natural environment, the tranquility of less crowded spaces, and the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife watching, and even surfing .

Photographers, as well, enjoy the wild environments and the unique light conditions, especially on the long nights of summer or for northern lights photography in the fall and winter.

For those interested in cultural experiences, the coastal towns of Scandinavia boast rich histories, interesting architecture, and local culinary specialties that are closely tied to the sea.

Beaches In Norway

Norway's coast, with its rugged terrain and cold waters, is not your typical beach destination, yet it offers some of the most breathtakingly beautiful beaches in Europe. The beaches here are ideal for those who appreciate natural beauty and solitude.

Winter surfing at Unstad Beach in Lofoten, Norway.

The most visually appealing beaches can be found in the photogenic Lofoten Islands , north of the Arctic circle.

These white-sand beaches are a paradise for photographers thanks to their dramatic mountain backdrops and crystal-clear waters, but also offer some of the best surfing conditions in Norway.

Lofoten’s Haukland Beach is often cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in Norway, due to its stunning white sand contrasting with the emerald waters and the dramatic mountains that encircle the beach, providing a breathtaking backdrop for both relaxation and photography.

Other beaches in Lofoten worth considering are the romantic Uttakleiv Beach, the remote, hike-in beach at Kvalvika, and the surfing hotspot Unstad.

Much farther south, the Stavanger region offers sandy beaches and historical sites together with beachside facilities, perfect for a more traditional day out. Sola Strand is perhaps the best known, with water-sports equipment rental, accommodation, spa facilities, and enjoyable lunches on offer at the Sola Strand Hotel.

Beaches In Denmark

Denmark's beaches are renowned for their accessibility and family-friendly atmosphere. With its long coastline, Denmark offers a variety of beach experiences, from the wild North Sea coast to the gentler shores of the Baltic Sea.

The Jutland peninsula is home to some of Denmark's most famous beaches. Those around Blåvand and Henne are popular for windsurfing and kite flying.

At Denmark's northernmost point, Grenen beach in Skagen is where two seas meet.

At the northern tip of Denmark, the Grenen sandbar in Skagen is a popular attraction. It is located where two seas collide and is renowned among artists and photographers for its beautiful light conditions.

Dueodde Beach is noteworthy for its extremely fine white sand and extensive dune landscape, making it a perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming in the relatively milder waters of the Baltic.

If you’re visiting Copenhagen, you needn't miss out on a stroll along the beach. To the southeast of the city, the three-mile long Amager Strandpark attracts runners, dog-walkers, swimmers, and kayakers, year-round. Denmark’s capital is also well-known for its harbor baths , perfect for a quick dip on a city break.

Beaches In Sweden

Sweden's coastline and islands are dotted with beaches that range from bustling family spots to secluded natural retreats.

The country's varied landscape means that beachgoers can find everything from sandy shores to rocky ledges ideal for sunbathing and swimming, if you know where to look.

In the warmer south of the country, Skåne county boasts some of the most popular beaches in Sweden. This includes Sandhammaren, known for its fine, white sand, clear waters, and dunes. It's often considered one of Sweden's best beaches for its natural beauty and excellent swimming conditions.

The attractive sands of Sandhammaren, Sweden, draw big numbers in the summer.

The west coast offers a mix of rocky and sandy beaches. The beach and boardwalk of Smögen is a summer hotspot where visitors can enjoy seafront dining, diving, and boating alongside traditional sunbathing.

Close to the capital city, the Stockholm archipelago provides diverse beach experiences, with thousands of islands offering secluded spots for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking.

Grinda, Värmdö, and Sandhamn islands are notable for their beautiful beaches, vibrant summer scenes, and easy access from Stockholm.

Unless you are going for a particular reason such as northern lights photography, beach vacations in Sweden are best enjoyed from late June to early August when the weather is warmest and the days are longest, allowing for warmer sea conditions and extended enjoyment of the outdoors.
