The Jacobite Steam Train

Jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train and immerse yourself in breath-taking Highland scenery. While experiencing one of the world’s greatest train journeys. The railway line curves over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, now immortalised in Harry Potter films as the route to Hogwarts.

You’ll travel through the heart of Scotland’s wild west coast and get up close to majestic mountains and sparkling lochs. At the head of Loch Shiel you’ll then capture the iconic vista of the Glenfinnan Monument. This is the historic location where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745. It was a passionate but ill-fated attempt to restore the exiled Stuarts to the Great Britain and Ireland throne. The monument, crowned with a lone piper, stands in silent tribute to the clansmen who died fighting the Jacobite cause.

This tour is only available as a private tour for 2022.

You may wish to add to your tour and take a return journey on the Jacobite Steam Train. This would mean taking a 2 day tour with an overnight stay before returning to the lowlands. Alternatively, you could choose to personalise the stops on route to the train instead. The choice is yours.

Jacobite Steam Train Tours

Enjoy one of Scotland’s most iconic rail journeys with a trip on the Jacobite Steam Train

Here at McKinlay Kidd, we have scoured Britain and Ireland from top to bottom in pursuit of the most evocative train trips imaginable. One of Scotland’s most iconic rail journeys is, of course, a trip on the Jacobite Steam Train. This holiday highlight has featured as part and parcel of a number of our most popular train tours since we started the company back in 2003, and we were the first to combine it with a stay on the majestic Isle of Skye .

Delighting passengers since 1984, this 82-mile train journey spans some of Scotland’s most striking Highland terrain as it follows the West Highland Line tracks from Fort William to Mallaig. You will feel as though you have stepped back in time into the height of the Victorian steam age – be ready for the chugging sounds and sooty smells which contrast with your well-appointed carriage – we strive to ensure you are in first-class for premium comfort, whenever available. Once the journey commences, all of your concentration will be on the breath-taking extremes of scenery you pass. Keep your camera at the ready as you take in the overwhelming beauty, including Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and Europe’s deepest loch (Loch Nevis).

One of the highlights of your time on the Jacobite Steam Train will undoubtedly be crossing the world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. You will be agog as the elegant train curves along the viaduct’s 21 spans. Harry Potter movie buffs will recognise the viaduct from the Hogwarts Express; others with a keen interest in history may note this was the location where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the Jacobite Rising in 1745. You will have ample opportunity to explore with a short stop in Glenfinnan to admire the viaduct structure from below and take in panoramic views of beautiful Loch Shiel.

The end of the line brings you to Mallaig, hopping off point for the ferry to the spectacular Isle of Skye – why not add a few days here at the conclusion of your Scottish steam train journey and acclimatise yourself to island life? Take a peek at our four night West Highland Line to Skye holiday, designed to tick that very box.

Wilderness and warriors…

Leaving Edinburgh behind on this magical, historic two-day tour, we’ll head north to the Forth Railway Bridge . Snap a photo of this UNESCO World Heritage Site , a memory to treasure and symbol of Scotland. Opened in 1890, the Forth Railway Bridge is a true Scottish icon recognised all over the world for being the first major steel structure, a key milestone in the development of modern railway engineering. To this day, this fantastic piece of history still holds the record for being the world’s longest cantilever bridge.

Over the river to Dunkeld…

As we head over the Firth of Forth, we’ll be making our way to the small highland village of Dunkeld, perfectly perched on the banks of the River Tay, the longest river in Scotland and seventh-longest in the United Kingdom. Enjoy your time in Dunkeld by taking a riverside walk to see the Dunkeld bridge, the largest Scottish bridge built by Thomas Telford, or visit the magical Dunkeld Cathedral. Part ruin, part parish church, this cathedral takes pride of place in this well-preserved historic town, also home to the resting place of the notorious ‘Wolf of Badenoch’, the third surviving son of King Robert II of Scotland. Make sure to explore the town to see the brightly coloured ‘little houses’, a sight which cannot be missed.

The journey north continues…

Leaving this historic Highland town behind, we’ll head further north to the ‘geographical centre of Scotland’ and of the gateways to the Highlands, Pitlochry , for a quick stop and bite to eat. Perched on the edge of the River Tummel, Pitlochry is home to one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Edradour. Leaving this beautiful town, we’ll once again head north on our journey, taking us through the breathtaking Drumochter Pass . Skirting the stunning peaks of the Cairngorm National Park , you’ll pass the home of five of the UK’s highest mountains.

Through the mountains to Culloden…

Passing Aviemore, we’ll drive via the Clava Cairns , a 500-year-old temple and ancient cemetery. This ancient burial ground features in the well-known ‘Outlander’ books, in the iconic scene when Claire falls through time to the 1700s. From here we’ll continue on to Culloden , the last stand of the Jacobites against the government forces. Explore the battlefield and walk in the footsteps of the hundreds of clansmen who gave their lives for the Jacobite cause or immerse yourself in the interactive history found inside of the Culloden Visitor Centre . Leaving this harrowing battlefield behind, we’ll finally be heading to Fort Augustus , a peaceful little village on the banks of Loch Ness, our overnight stop for this tour.

Overnight: Fort Augustus

Take a steam train back in time…

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before a short journey to Fort William will finally jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train ! Known for being one of the world’s greatest train journeys, this train ride will take you past Britain’s highest mountain, deepest loch, shortest river and most westerly station. You may know it as the Hogwarts Express ! You’ll cross the viaduct featured in the ‘Harry Potter’ films and pass the Glenfinnan Monument where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite rising before arriving in Mallaig, the end of the famous West Highland Railway . The other half of the group will take this part of the journey to Mallaig in the bus with your driver-guide, giving you the opportunity to see the train cross the iconic Viaduct. Either way, you will be able to sit back, relax, enjoy the ride and don’t forget to take in those unmissable views of the highlands.

Have seafood for lunch at Mallaig…

Get ready to depart as the train and bus arrive into Mallaig , a stunning west coast fishing town, for lunch. Mallaig, ‘Mel Vik’ in old Norse, means sand dune bay, the perfect description for this vibrant port, the end to the ‘Road to the Isles’ . Spend some time learning about Mallaig’s fascinating historical past at the Mallaig Heritage Centre, or sample some of the freshest seafood Scotland has to offer. After a delicious lunch, the groups roles will reverse, with the other half of the group now having the opportunity to take the vintage steam engine for the journey back to Fort William, whilst  your driver-guide will transport the other half of the group along the Road to the Isles for an opportunity to watch as the train passes over the majestic viaduct. When the group re-unities in Fort William, you will begin your journey to the breath-taking scenery of Glen Coe.

The journey home via Glen Coe…

Heading south, you’ll enjoy a drive through Glen Coe , Scotland’s most famous and scenic glen, where the MacDonalds were betrayed. This awe-inspiring glen was carved out centuries ago by glaciers and volcanic explosions to create the stunning mountains we know and love. This beautiful glen may seem a little familiar due to its starring role in one of the ‘Harry Potter’ films. Our journey through Glen Coe takes us to Rannoch Moor , a beauty not to be missed, so stunning it was the perfect place to film a scene in James Bond’s ‘Skyfall’. At 50 square miles of peat bog and marsh, it’s one of Scotland’s last great wildernesses. From here, our last leg of the journey home begins with a drive through Stirlingshire, passing by the likes of Stirling Castle and the Kelpies, before arriving back into Edinburgh.

A great tour with lots of fun and laughter. Our guide, Iain was knowledgeable and gave us good information about each location and had the best jokes. The accommodation in Fort Augustus was clean and comfortable. We were blessed with the best weather all days during the tour which made everything look all the more stunning in the sun! The train ride was beautiful and if you’re a Potterhead, try and get a seat on the left hand side to get the best views of the viaduct.

We did this tour as a surprise for my partner as he always wanted to see Scotland and is a big fan of Harry Potter. Everything on this tour was perfect. Our guide was really funny and you can tell he knows a lot about Scotland, he told us plenty of stories, jokes and interesting facts about Scotland, he also played some beautiful Scottish songs as we were traveling along, great guy. The scenery was really beautiful, out of this world I would say, especially Glen Coe. We had plenty of stops for pictures or food. Our accommodation was comfortable, good breakfast and close to Loch Ness, lovely scenery again. On the second day we took the Jacobite train which was really fun and the best part of the whole tour. Would recommend this tour to everyone who wants to visit Scotland and may be a Harry Potter fan

Steven B made this tour unforgettable! This tour packed in so much into two days but did not feel rushed or slow. We just got back from it. So many unique experiences included. I went with my mother and grandmother, three generations of people to please and Steven B did a fantastic job. I learned so much about the history of Scotland, and he was so engaging throughout the entire tour. He added "wee adventures' throughout, which I loved. We were able to do the Loch Ness ferry to Urquhart castle, which was breath-taking. This was an additional cost but included entry into the castle ruins as well. The BnB we stayed at was Loch Ness Inn which was really nice, so close to the canal. Fort Augustus is a lovely little town. The main event was the Jacobite train which was such a cool experience coming from a Harry Potter Fan. Steven B throughout the trip worked so hard to ensure the best experience for us.

Jacobite Steam Train Review: What It’s Really Like (+ Photography Tips!)

Jacobite Steam Train Review: What It’s Really Like (+ Photography Tips!)

Scotland’s Jacobite steam train is a railway journey of superlatives.

Hailed as the greatest railway journey in the world, it passes by Britain’s tallest mountain range and Europe’s deepest saltwater loch with views of the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct along the way.

It’s rare to find a more picturesque train ride!

Many people ride the Jacobite train as it’s also known as the Harry Potter Train or Hogwarts Express and there are plenty of filming locations from the franchise en route. But you don’t have to be a fan of the wizard to enjoy it.

In this Jacobite steam train review , I share everything you need to know about riding and photographing the train – and crucially, whether or not it’s worth the hype.

What is the Jacobite steam train?

The Jacobite steam train is owned and operated by West Coast Railways. Officially called the Jacobite, it’s named after the local connections to the Jacobite political movement in the Scottish Highlands.

It also goes by the Harry Potter train and you may already recognise parts of the railway route from the film franchise.

Some of the carriages on the Jacobite made up part of the Hogwarts Express. Although, the actual Hogwarts Express engine is at Warner Brothers Studios in London!

Whatever you wish to call it, the train is a traditional vintage steam train and one of the last ones in the UK.

It offers a unique way to experience the West Highlands with its spectacular views of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, and the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct before reaching Loch Nevis, the deepest seawater loch in Europe.

Update for 2024: West Coast Railways (the Jacobite train operator) has been banned from operating the steam train over a safety dispute. For now, it looks like you can still book tickets for this year but check with West Coast Railways just in case.

The Jacobite steam engine and a man wearing orange at Fort William station.

What is the Glenfinnan Viaduct?

Located at the top of Loch Shiel, Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct that opened in 1901.

The striking concrete architecture cuts a dramatic image against the surrounding green hills of the West Highlands. It’s made even more spectacular by the Jacobite steam train which travels along it for half the year.

The filming of the second and third Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban also took place in this area.

The Hogwarts Express even stopped at Glenfinnan.

Editor’s tip: The Jacobite steam train can get booked up months in advance – particularly during the summer! I recommend booking it early to avoid disappointment.

Glenfinnan Viaduct with people on the hill in the background for this Jacobite steam train review.

Where is the Jacobite steam train?

The Jacobite train is located in Fort William on the west coast of Scotland. Fort William is a popular base for the Scottish Highlands and islands such as Mull and Skye.

It’s also at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom!

How do you get to Fort William?

Known as the outdoor capital of Scotland, Fort William is a pretty easy base to get to.

You have several ways to get to Fort William: hire a car or campervan and drive (it’s 2 hours 35 minutes from Glasgow). I recommend RentalCars for the best price comparison.

The best option (I personally think) is riding the direct train from Glasgow to Fort William on the West Highland Railway Line.

Although it’s a fair bit slower (3 hours 50 on average), it’s an absolutely glorious journey up through the Highlands – giving you a taster of what’s to come.

And yes, it’s the first part of the same line the Jacobite is on.

If you’re riding the Jacobite, you’ll most likely need to stay in Fort William. Read my top hotel recommendations for Fort William.

Girl in a red coat standing by a carriage at the platform for Jacobite steam train review.

The best Jacobite steam train tours

You can easily ride the Jacobite steam train as part of a self-guided trip. But if you’re short on time, don’t want the hassle of getting to it yourself or want to do it as part of a wider Scotland west coast itinerary, I recommend doing a small group tour.

Here are the best Jacobite steam train tours you can do:

  • Hogwarts Express and Scottish Highlands Day Tour – departing from Edinburgh, this day trip includes a one-way ticket on the Jacobite steam train. You’ll also get to see the Glenfinnan Viaduct and the beautiful village of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands!
  • 2-Day Highlands Tour with Hogwarts Express – if you want to incorporate the Jacobite steam train into a longer Scottish Highlands experience, this two-day tour from Edinburgh includes the Cairngorms, Culloden Moor, a ride on the steam train and a visit to Glencoe.
  • Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glencoe & Mallaig Tour – for a budget-friendly option, this eco-certified tour departing from Glasgow takes you to Glenfinnan where you can see the train going across the viaduct. This one doesn’t include the steam train ride.

Editor’s tip: I recommend booking these tours in advance as they sell out quickly! All tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Where does the Jacobite steam train go?

The Jacobite steam train runs from Fort William to the seaside town of Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland. It’s a gorgeous 84-mile journey with breathtaking views all the way – particularly when you cross Glenfinnan Viaduct.

One thing to note, although the Jacobite passes stations on the journey, you won’t be able to get off at any of them as it only stops at Mallaig – sometimes Arisaig.

To get off, you’ll need to ride the West Highland Line train (more on that later!).

A quick note on Mallaig

Mallaig is a fishing town on the west coast of Scotland. It’s well-known for its fabulous fresh seafood. However, as lovely as it is, there’s not a whole lot else there so I advise managing your expectations.

If you feel like stretching your legs, there are a few nice walks in the hills behind the town. The Tea Garden restaurant is also a good place for a bite to eat.

Alternatively, Mallaig is a link to the Isle of Skye.

You could use the Jacobite steam train as a transport link rather than an attraction by riding it to Mallaig and then catching the CalMac ferry to Armadale, Skye. Or vice versa. This means you’ll ride the steam train one way like I did rather than out and back.

Just make sure you check the ferry timetable carefully so that the timings match up.

Boats in the harbour at Mallaig, a fishing town in the Scottish Highlands.

How long does the train take?

The journey takes about one hour and 30-40 minutes each way so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery passing your window.

If you choose to do the return journey then you have about two hours to spend in Mallaig.

Jacobite steam train ticket prices and seating

There are three carriage types to choose from on the train. These are:

First Class Open Carriage: this carriage has been beautifully furnished with traditional upholstered seats and table lamps. You can choose between private tables of two or four. You’ll also get complimentary tea and coffee. Plus, optional cream tea is available for pre-order at about £18.50 per person!

First Class Compartment Carriage: known as the Harry Potter compartment carriage, the vintage-style compartments seat up to six passengers. The price is per compartment. Complimentary refreshments aren’t included. This carriage is only available during the morning service.

Standard Class Carriage : fairly basic but still comfortable, the seating is four per table. No complimentary refreshments are included but you can make use of the buffet.

Ticket fare prices look like this:

Note: all train fares include a return journey in the price. You can ride the train one way but there’s no one-way fare price.  Book tickets here.

Jacobite steam train review: what to expect

So, what’s it actually like on the Jacobite steam train? I rode it one way in September on the return journey from Mallaig to Fort William.

I used it as a mode of transport travelling from Skye to Fort William and then onwards to Spean Bridge for the night.

This was fine, but the only downside is that you only get a chance to see Glenfinnan Viaduct once rather than twice. So, I was a little apprehensive about getting on the train and finding a good spot.

Mallaig station is small (as is Fort William) so you can just walk onto the platform without showing your ticket. You get your tickets via email and the conductor checks them later on.

It’s recommended that you get there a minimum of 20 minutes before departure but we got there half an hour before to take photos of the outside (you can take better photos of the front of the train at Fort William).

We found our seats in Standard Class – right at the front of the train. It’s not quite like riding in style in the beautiful vintage First Class but we were on a bit of a budget. Standard Class was fine, nothing too swanky, but comfortable!

We soon realised that our seats were on the wrong side to see Glenfinnan so my boyfriend disappeared down to the back of the train with a camera in tow, leaving me with the bags.

View of Glenfinnan Monument with green hills in the background.

As we set off, I kept an eye on the map and then jumped up to claim my spot on the right side of the train at the end of the carriage in time for Glenfinnan.

I had to stand firm as plenty of people were trying to do the same. I did end up sharing my window with another woman though.

As we approached the viaduct, the train slowed down and the driver told us where to look. I felt a bit like royalty seeing the people at Glenfinnan waiting and waving as we slowly passed by!

We all craned our necks to get a good view and a lot of people stuck their cameras and phones out of the window (very risky!) to get a better shot.

I found that it was impossible to get a photo of the curve of the train without the odd camera, head or selfie stick in the way!

After Glenfinnan, I was able to return to my seat. My boyfriend also returned and we sat back and relaxed for the rest of the journey.

It was an amazing experience despite the mad dash for Glenfinnan. If I had a bigger budget, I would have opted for the cream tea in First Class for the full Jacobite train experience.

Which side of the train should you sit for Glenfinnan

Okay, probably the most important question – which side should you sit on if you want to take a photo of the train curving around Glenfinnan Viaduct?

Short answer: you want to sit on the left-hand side when departing from Fort William and the right-hand side when returning from Mallaig. I repeat that’s LEFT there and RIGHT back. The same goes if you want the best views too.

To see a proper curve, you’ll also want to be at the very front of the train or at the very back. If you’re at the front, watch out for the soot.

If you call up to book your tickets, you might be able to request where you sit, otherwise, tickets are randomly allocated.

Editor’s tip: if your seat is on the wrong side for Glenfinnan, don’t worry! It happened to me too. Go and park yourself by a window at the end of the carriage ideally at the front or back of the train. I recommend getting to a spot as early as possible and be prepared to wait there until Glenfinnan. As the train nears the famous site, lots of people will be milling about looking for a similar spot!

Other photo spots to look out for on the Jacobite:

  • The big and obvious one is the Glenfinnan Viaduct! It’s roughly about halfway through the train journey and don’t worry, you can’t miss it as the train slows down for pictures.
  • As you come to Glenfinnan, look out for the beautiful Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Monument , a tall tower that commemorates the lives lost at the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
  • Depending on visibility, you’ll be able to see Ben Nevis as you arrive at Fort William.
  • Just after Glenfinnan (or just before if you’re returning from Mallaig), you’ll pass by Loch Eilt where you can see Eilean Na Moine island – the island where *SPOILER ALERT* Dumbledore is buried in the Harry Potter films. It’s on the opposite side of Loch Shiel.
  • As you travel along the coast to Mallaig, see if you can spot the Isles of Eigg and Rùm then later the bottom of Skye in the distance!

Red train carriages going over Glenfinnan Viaduct.

What about Glenfinnan Viewpoint?

The Jacobite steam train is without a doubt a beautiful railway journey with spectacular views. However, there’s one thing you do miss when riding it and that’s the best view of the train going over the viaduct. After all, it would require you to be in two places at once!

So, what if you want to see the Hogwarts Express go over Glenfinnan Viaduct in all its Harry Potter glory? For that, you’ll need to go to Glenfinnan Viewpoint located on the hill above the viaduct.

Glenfinnan Viewpoint is just a 10-minute walk from Glenfinnan train station, but you’ll need to be on the West Highland Line train operated by ScotRail to get off, not the Jacobite train. That train runs three times a day (once on Sundays!).

You can also drive and park near the lookout, but parking isn’t free and spaces are limited.

Fair warning, the viewpoint gets very busy as everyone wants to get that same photo. Try to get there early if you can to secure a spot you like.

When to see the Jacobite train go over Glenfinnan

The Jacobite goes over Glenfinnan Viaduct at approximately:

Morning: 10:45

Afternoon: 15:00

In theory, you can squeeze in both riding and viewing the train if you’re prepared to do some to-ing and fro-ing.

Itinerary A

You could get the ScotRail train from Fort William to Glenfinnan, which takes about 34 minutes. Depending on the time you have, you could admire the views over Loch Shiel before getting into place for the Jacobite.

Then you would hop straight on the next ScotRail train to Mallaig and be just in time for the morning service heading back to Fort William.

Or give yourself a breather and catch the afternoon train back (only from May to September!).

Itinerary B

Alternatively, you could spread them both out over two days. On the first day, you could catch the ScotRail to Glenfinnan and have a day out there.

You have two opportunities to see the Jacobite train go over the viaduct then. You can also have a look at Glenfinnan Monument, the museum and take a cruise on Loch Shiel.

From there, go back to Fort William (or onwards to Mallaig), then ride the Jacobite train one way or both ways!

Want to know how to get to Glenfinnan from Fort William? I’ve written a guide featuring all the best transport options, photography tips, where to stay, what to do at Glenfinnan and more.

Editor’s tip: Check the timetable here to make sure the trains line up.

Top tips for riding the Jacobite steam train

  • If you aren’t too bothered about the Jacobite steam train trip itself but want to see the views, you can get the ScotRail train. It follows exactly the same route at a fraction of the price!
  • You can bring your own food and drink on the train. There’s also a buffet car to buy refreshments. If you book First Class you can pre-order cream tea for your journey.
  • If your window is open, be prepared for some soot and steam.
  • Scotland is no stranger to wet weather… If your window is misted up, give it a wipe and wipe the outside too before you set off so you can see the views.
  • And on that note, pack a rain jacket for your excursions outside! Read my complete Scotland packing list.
  • You can take photos and videos from the window but just make sure you hold on tight.
  • And if you’re travelling with your furry friend, you’ll be pleased to know that well-behaved medium-sized dogs are allowed in Standard Class!

Jacobite steam train review: is it worth it?

Yes, 100%, riding the Jacobite train is worth it! It’s arguably pretty expensive and I was worried it wasn’t going to live up to expectations, but it proved me wrong.

Admittedly, I was a little bit stressed about missing Glenfinnan to enjoy myself the whole way through – but not everyone can sit on the same side and I don’t see how they can manage it fairly. Once I settled myself into a spot I liked on the train I was able to relax!

The Jacobite steam train is perfect for Harry Potter lovers as you get to ride the Hogwarts Express (my 11-year-old self would be in bits!). But it’s not just for Harry Potter fans.

The train journey is regarded as one of the best in the world so it’s worthy of being a bucket list activity in its own right.

That being said, if it’s just a good photo of the Jacobite train passing over the viaduct you want, then I recommend getting the ScotRail train to Glenfinnan and waiting at the viewpoint.

I hope you’ve found this Jacobite steam train review and guide useful for planning your own trip. If you have any questions about it, let me know in the comments below!

This is great and all-encompassing. We wanted to take the train so badly but didn’t have the time on the itinerary to devote the day, so went and saw it at the station then raced to get a photo of it going over the viaduct. The little seaside town it stops at looks so delightfully British!

Thank you! Oh lovely, at least you got to see it go over the viaduct. Arguably the best angle!

I didn’t realize you could actually ride that train. As a Harry Potter fan that sounds like great fun! It’s also convenient if you’re planning to do destinations at the end of the track.

It certainly is!

I love train journeys and this one sounds epic! Definitely adding it to my wish list.

It’s definitely one of the best train journeys!

Hello thank you for your review and the opportunity to as a question. I have read several reviews and am left confused I really fancy the steam journey when we are in Scotland end of May 2023 as it is expensive. If it looks to be a good experience I will pay. But some reviews have said could not see views due to dirty window. I find that little difficult to believe. I think from images I have seen it is worth booking first class. My heart says the steam train would be the better experience really.

I think if you want to do it, you should definitely go for it! The windows can get a little bit grimy from the soot – a hazard of being a steam engine! However, from what I can remember, the First Class carriages were at the end of the train so the windows are a bit cleaner. The windows by the doors are usually open so you can go and stand there for a bit. Lots of people will do this as you reach Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Thanks for your comment and I hope you have a lovely time on your trip!

The Jacobite Steam Train

Described as one of the great railway journeys of the world this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes.

Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain's most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis! West Coast Railways, operators of 'The Jacobite', provided the steam engine and carriages for the 'Hogwarts Express' as seen in the 'Harry Potter' films including 'The Philosopher's Stone' and others in this wonderful series of films. Some of the carriages of 'The Jacobite' are those used in the 'Harry Potter' films. So, come and travel to Mallaig along the line used in the films, see the famous Glenfinnan viaduct, an unmistakeable landmark for all Harry Potter fans. It's a great day out for all the family. The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer's day, you can see the "Small Isles" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films "Highlander" and "Local Hero".

Please be aware that trespassing on the railway line is extremely dangerous and visitors should stay clear of the tracks at all times.

Complete Guide To The Harry Potter Train in Scotland

The Jacobite Steam Train, aka the Harry Potter train in Scotland, is one of the great railway journeys of the world.

Table of Contents

Even before it rose to fame thanks to the Harry Potter films, the railway journey itself was famous due to its stunning scenery, taking passengers on a journey through one of the remotest areas in Scotland.

I rode the Jacobite Steam Train with my family in October. We did the return trip in one day, and we all agreed it was a fantastic journey!

I’ve written this guide to help you plan your adventure on the Jacobite Steam Train. I am talking you through the process of purchasing your tickets, riding the train, what to do in Mallaig, plus my best tips!

If you don’t want to ride the Jacobite Steam Train, but want to take that iconic photo of the train on the Glenfinnan Viaduct, I’ve also included a section that tells you everything you need to know.

Riding the Harry Potter Train in Scotland

Riding the Jacobite Steam Train has been on my Scotland bucket list for years- and so I was super excited when my family and I completed the trip this month.

Here are some of my best tips for booking the train and what you can expect from the journey.

Where is the Harry Potter train in Scotland located?

The Harry Potter train is located in Fort William, at the railway station in the heart of the town. There are actually two trains and two services that run daily.

We caught the morning train from Fort William; we arrived the day before and spent the night at the Premier Inn Fort William . It was just across from the train station, so it was a super handy location.

I do recommend arriving in Fort William the day before you ride the train. There are plenty of fun things to do in Fort William, and it also means you have more time to get organised for your trip.

If you’re looking to stay in more luxurious accommodation, I recommend the Nevis Bank Inn . We had dinner at their restaurant and it was 5 out of 5; I had the steak and it was superb! It’s only a 10 minute walk to the train station.

How much does it cost to ride the Harry Potter train in Scotland?

It costs £49 for a Standard ticket for an adult and £69 for a First Class ticket for an adult. For children aged 16 or under it costs £28 for a standard ticket and £48 for a First Class ticket.

You can purchase your tickets online from West Coast Railways .

jacobite train tour

How long is the Harry Potter train ride in Scotland?

The journey on the Jacobite Steam Train is 84-miles long and takes just over 2 hours to make its way from Fort William to Mallaig. The journey from Mallaig back to Fort William is slightly shorter. This is because the train stops at the Glenfinnan station for around 15 minutes on the Fort William to Mallaig leg, so travellers can stretch their legs and explore the small shops at the station.

Allow one full day to ride to Mallaig and back; the train departs Fort William at around 10 am and returns to Fort William at around 4 pm.

I’ve included the schedule further down in this guide so you can see the exact timings.

When is the best time to ride the Harry Potter train in Scotland?

Personally, we chose to ride the Jacobite Steam Train during the first week of October so we could experience the journey surrounded by the beautiful autumn foliage. Because the Jacobite Steam train runs from April to October, there really isn’t a bad time to ride the train- however, I do think late September/ early October is a great time to ride the train because of the pretty autumn colours!

jacobite train tour

Does the train make any stops?

The train stops at the Glenfinnan station for around 15 minutes on the Fort William – Mallaig leg. There is a small gift shop at the station that sells general tourist souvenirs. I purchased some pretty cool old-style railway prints!

There is also a small shop on the train selling Harry Potter merchandise that you can browse when the train stops in Glenfinnan.

The train didn’t stop on the Mallaig to Fort William leg.

How far in advance should I buy my tickets for the Jacobite Steam Train in Scotland?

Tickets for the Jacobite Steam Train usually sell out, especially during the summer. I recommend purchasing your tickets around 10 months in advance if you are travelling from overseas and wanting to ride the train in summer. I wouldn’t recommend booking your train tickets any less than three months in advance, as it’s likely they will have sold by then, especially during the busy summer period and on weekends.

We booked our tickets for October in April, to give you a bit of an idea.

Do you have to wear a face mask on the train?

Currently, yes, however you can remove it when you’re eating or drinking.

Jacobite Steam Train schedule

Here’s the Jacobite Steam Train schedule:

Sunday to Friday Service

Saturday service.

  • The morning service runs from Monday 4th April to Friday 28th October 2022 (7days per week)
  • The afternoon service runs from Monday 2nd May to Friday 30th September 2022 (seven days per week)

Tip: If you are driving to Fort William from Edinburgh or Glasgow , you will drive through the valley of Glencoe . Be sure to stop at The Three Sisters car park to get a photo of the mountains there!

Arriving in Mallaig

jacobite train tour

Mallaig is a bustling fishing port and is the ‘other’ gateway to the Isles, as it runs a ferry service to the Isle of Skye and neighbouring islands.

Originally the town was a farmstead called Mallaigvaig and owned by Lord Lovat . He eventually subdivided the land and sold the plots to folk living in Morar , and the fishing village was established in the 1840s.

A railway was established in 1880, bringing more visitors to the area, and in 1984, the Jacobite Steam Train began its journey to Mallaig from Fort William, bringing more tourism to the area!

When you arrive in Mallaig, you have just under two hours to explore the town, so I recommend booking a table for lunch to help save time and stress.

Mallaig is known for its outstanding seafood restaurants, but there are options to suit all tastes and dietary requirements.

Restaurants in Mallaig I recommend include:

  • The Tea Garden – a licensed cafe that sells sandwiches, soup, burgers, fish and chips and sweet treats.
  • Steam Inn – for seafood, burgers and pizza
  • The Cornerstone – for seafood and steak
  • The Chlachain Inn – for seafood, burgers and sandwiches

Public Toilets in Mallaig

There are public toilets located across the road from the train station, back towards the coast. You will see them from the left side of the train as you pull into the station.

The toilets are unisex and cost 30p to use, payable by contactless card (cash is not accepted). Before you complain about having to pay to use the toilet, it’s important that they charge a fee because it costs £45 per day just to run them- and the council only subsidises a small amount. So think of your wee payment as supporting the community.

More Tips for Riding the Jacobite Steam Train

  • Bring snacks with you. The trolley didn’t reach us until the end of our journey, and by then weren’t far off having lunch in Mallaig.
  • I mentioned this before but, book a table for lunch in Mallaig in advance! It saves you from losing precious time trying to find somewhere to eat when you arrive.
  • Travel First Class if possible. The general area of the train is a little dated, and you have easier access to food and beverages when you travel First Class. Plus you get free tea and coffee with a First Class ticket!
  • For the best view, sit on the left side of the train. You will have to request this at the time of booking, because your seats are allocated when you receive your tickets via email a few weeks before your trip.

Photographing the Jacobite Steam Train

One of the most iconic photos in Scotland is the Jacobite Steam Train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct with a trail of fluffy, white smoke trailing off into the surrounding mountains.

Some folk would rather see the train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct, or may be on a budget and want to see the train, rather than pay to ride it. Fair enough!

Before I rode the train, I watched it cross the viaduct from the ground. To be honest- both views from the train and from the ground are spectacular, so I recommend doing both!

The train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct twice a day:

  • 30 minutes after departing Fort William
  • 45 minutes after departing Mallaig

I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the train is due to arrive on the bridge.

In the busier summer months, I suggest you arrive even earlier so you can secure a decent spot. Give yourself plenty of time to set up your camera when you arrive. There will be many other photographers around, and the last thing you want to do is rush- just remember, you only have one chance to get the perfect shot!

Read More: 50 Travel Tips for Scotland

Luckily, the train stops briefly in the middle of the bridge to give everyone time to admire the view and snap a photo.

There is parking at the Glenfinnan Visitor Centre , but this can fill up fairly quickly. It’s not uncommon to see people parked on the side of the road. Be careful when driving around this area- there are usually kids about!

Where is the best place to photograph the Jacobite Steam Train?

There are two locations where you can photograph the Jacobite Steam Train. I’ve indicated these on the map below:

View point #1 is located after walking a short trail. This is probably the best place to get a photo of the Jacobite Steam Train.

View point #2 is more easy to access, as it is right next to the Visitor’s Centre.

No matter which view point you choose, be sure to wear waterproof shoes, or lightweight hiking boots as this area can be boggy if it has been raining.

Don’t want people to feature in your photo? The general rule of thumb is the higher you can get, the less likely other people will get in the way of your shot.

Where is the best place to take a photo inside the train?

If you’re doing the Fort William to Mallaig leg, I recommend sitting on the left hand side of the train so that when you go over the Glenfinnan Viaduct you’ll get the best photo of the train.

There are small windows you can open from your seat, however, the best place to get a photo of the train is from the bigger windows that can be found between the carriages. You can open these too, and you will get a wonderful view of Loch Shiel and the viaduct.

The train will pause briefly on the viaduct, so you can snap a few photos. It did not stop on the afternoon journey from Mallaig to Fort William, so make sure you’re quick if you want to photograph the train on this leg.

My husband and I will be in Fort William for two nights as we will have just completed a 9 days self-guided walking tour of the West Highlands. Our plans are to go to Portree from there and although I think it'd be easier to go there by City Link bus, I'm wondering if we could possibly take the Harry Potter train in the morning, arriving in Maillaig and then from there taking the ferry and then a bus over to portree....or is this just way too much, I"m not sure if buses/ferries run timely, if they don't, this could all be a pain! what are your thoughts? we'll be on the Isle of Skye for 4 nights....Sandy

Harry Potter steam train service suspended

The operator of the Jacobite train in the Highlands has warned the suspension could cost up to £50m in lost value.

Thursday 21 March 2024 02:56, UK

A steam train made famous by Harry Potter has been suspended pending a safety ruling.

The Jacobite train service through the Highlands has been suspended with immediate effect as it awaits a verdict on allowing it to continue operating in its current state.

Its operator has warned the suspension could cost up to £50m in lost value.

The Jacobite train featured in the 2002 film Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets and is sometimes known as the Hogwarts Express in a nod to JK Rowling 's franchise.

It is operated by West Coast Railways (WCR), the UK's largest main-line heritage rail operator, and has had to suspend the service as it awaits a ruling from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on whether it can continue to operate with hinged-door carriages.

Pic: PictureLux/The Hollywood Archive/Alamy

Hinged-door carriage exemption

The service has operated for more than 30 years under an exemption that allows it to run with hinged-door carriages on the main lines, which is typically not allowed.

WCR has submitted an application to renew the exemption, and made a request for a temporary exemption to operate while the ORR makes its decision.

WCR lost a High Court challenge against the ORR over the safety of doors on its carriages in December.

The company had complained that the multimillion-pound cost of having to retrofit central locking could "destroy" its business and argued its door systems were just as safe.

However, a judge dismissed the operator's case and concluded the ORR had taken a "justifiable" approach.

The service takes tourists from Fort William to Mallaig, including over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Pic: PA

Suspension could cost £50m in lost value

Speaking about the suspension, James Shuttleworth, commercial manager at WCR, said: "The Jacobite service is enjoyed by thousands of customers every year. It boosts the local economies of Mallaig and Fort William and brings an estimated £20m into the UK's tourism sector.

"If the ORR does not grant us a further exemption, we believe this could lead to up to £50m in lost value to both local and national communities."

The company said passengers with bookings for the Jacobite will be offered a full refund.

An ORR spokesperson said heritage operators, including WCR were told "several years ago" that in order to operate after 31 March, they must either have central door locking - as opposed to hinged-door carriages - or would need an exemption.

"WCR's application for an exemption failed and they made a claim for judicial review," they added.

"A temporary exemption was granted in order to maintain the status quo, enabling WCR to operate whilst the litigation reached a conclusion.

"Despite this, WCR chose to sell tickets when it was far from certain that a new application for an exemption would be granted, either in time for the commencement of services or at all.

"It submitted an exemption application on 8 March, which we are now assessing.

"ORR is disappointed that WCR appears not to have made sensible contingency plans for the benefit of their customers."

ORR statement following Jacobite Steam Train suspension

Victoria Thompson avatar

Following the announcement yesterday from West Coast Railways that they are suspending the Jacobite steam train, the Office of Road and Rail have released a statement.

They say that for a number of years heritage operators have been aware of the need for central door locking or an exemption.

In addition, they say that although they are assessing the current exemption application; they are disappointed that WCR chose to sell tickets when it wasn't certain if the exemption would be granted and that WCR have made no contingency plans.

The full ORR statement is below

“All heritage operators were told several years ago that in order to operate after 31 March 2023 they either needed to fit central door locking or obtain an exemption from us. West Coast Railway's application for an exemption failed and they made a claim for judicial review. A temporary exemption was granted in order to maintain the status quo, enabling WCR to operate whilst the litigation reached a conclusion. Despite this, WCR chose to sell tickets when it was far from certain that a new application for an exemption would be granted, either in time for the commencement of services or at all. It submitted an exemption application on 8 March, which we are now assessing. ORR is disappointed that WCR appears not to have made sensible contingency plans for the benefit of their customers.” ORR Spokesperson

The Ideal solution would be for the present owners to sell the business to someone else. The ORR might grant an exemption for The Jacobite for 1 year to the new owners to give them a chance to get their act together. Make no mistake failure to operate this popular 30 years old service will damage the local economy. Is it right that local people whose livelihood depends on this service operating should be dismissed as acceptable collateral in this feud between the ORR and WCR? Discuss.

Many of the passengers on heritage railways are younger adults and children who rarely use trains and if they do only know trains with automatic doors. I have seen families in a panic not knowing how to get in or out of the mark 1 carriages. As for using a leather strap to lower the window and reach out to find an external handle on a vintage carriage can be completely befuddling. It’s the reverse of people of my age complaining that the don’t know how to use their mobile phone and asking their four year old grandchild to show them. The argument we’ve done it like this for decades is irrelevant when people have not been alive during most of those decades. However I still there should be ways to operate traditional carriages safely but it requires a high level of stewarding and plenty of information giving. Might just be cheaper to fit the central locking!!

Health and safety been imposed upon us once again. This type of train has run for over 100 years with few fatalities due to falling out of doors. Give people credit for common sense and allow the train to run as usual. This decision will cost local business hundreds of thousands over the season and could lead to job loses.

Locking the doors is not an ootion as in the event of an accident everyone is locked in. That has been ourlawed for years. No thanks. And I’m afraid trusting to common sense especially with non English speaking visitors attracted from around the world is just fantasy. Other Heritage companies have successfully done the upgrades, they have had plenty of advance warning to solve the issue but the shareholders here obviously put profits over safety and assumed they would get a rolling exemption forever despite having known for years what they needed to do. They simply chose to ignore the issue and it’s caught up with them despite the high ticket prices they now charge.

We all know that we are not to open a door when a vehicle is moving but in a time when common sense is not considered and a fast buck is being made by the claim culture environment preventative steps need to be taken.

The comments about common sense and historic use of doors has merit. However it does not address the fact that WCR appear to have arrogantly ignored the fact that regulations have been brought in which they have ignored the warnings and hoped to bully the regulator into granting a further exemption despite having made little obvious attempt to comply.

The impact on the businesses that have supported the WCR and the Jacobite throughout these years have been let down massively. They knew this needed to be sorted, and have done little to rectify the problem. Hospitality sectors may now start to see cancellations for bookings made because of this. Tickets should not have been sold knowing there was a strong possibility this could happen. Maybe now is the time to support some of the other local activities around the area, and promote the other wonderful attractions we have to offer.

Train have run over one hundred years without central locking are passengers not capable of opening doors themselves health and safety gone mad big brother is watching look out for further restrictions on personal choices 🙄

If they applied for the exemption on the 8th March just process it and get on with it! How many injuries have they had from people falling out of the train??

Just LOCK all the doors before leaving Fort William and only open them when they get to Mallaig.

Also When will this be be made compulsory on heritage lines?

I don’t know why common sense can’t prevail and people leave doors alone until the train has stopped and they can alight at a platform.

I remember when passenger operated doors were normal on all rolling stock. I also remember opening the doors as we were slowing down to stop at a station and jumping out to walk alongside the train. I did it rarely but it was very common.

The train, sometimes known as the Hogwarts Express – a nod to the name of the school in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise – is operated by West Coast Railways (WCR).

WCR, which is the UK’s largest main line heritage rail operator, has had to suspend the service as it awaits a ruling from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on whether it can continue to operate with hinged-door carriages.

The company had complained that the multimillion-pound cost of having to retrofit central locking could “destroy” its business and it argued its door systems were just as safe.

But a judge dismissed the operator’s case and concluded the ORR had taken a “justifiable” approach.

The service takes tourists from Fort William to Mallaig, including over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Speaking about the suspension, James Shuttleworth, commercial manager at WCR, said: “We are disappointed to have to suspend this service and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers who have booked trips.

“We again appeal to the ORR to reconsider our request for a temporary exemption.

“The Jacobite service is enjoyed by thousands of customers every year. It boosts the local economies of Mallaig and Fort William and brings an estimated £20 million into the UK’s tourism sector.

“If the ORR does not grant us a further exemption, we believe this could lead to up to £50 million in lost value to both local and national communities.

“We remain committed to working with the ORR to find a long-term solution which safeguards the future of heritage services on the main line.”

An ORR spokesperson said heritage operators, including WCR were told “several years ago” that in order to operate after March 31 2023, they must either have central door locking, as opposed to hinged-door carriages, or would need an exemption.

The spokesperson said: “WCR’s application for an exemption failed and they made a claim for judicial review.

“A temporary exemption was granted in order to maintain the status quo, enabling WCR to operate whilst the litigation reached a conclusion.

“Despite this, WCR chose to sell tickets when it was far from certain that a new application for an exemption would be granted, either in time for the commencement of services or at all.

“It submitted an exemption application on 8 March, which we are now assessing.

“ORR is disappointed that WCR appears not to have made sensible contingency plans for the benefit of their customers.”

Passengers with bookings for the Jacobite will be offered a full refund.

They can email WCR on [email protected] for more details.

After all, we don't want you to miss your return flight.

2. The quoted price is per person?

The fares for our layover tour mentioned above are per vehicle, so it doesn't matter if you are a party of 2 or 3 (or 7) passengers, the fare stays the same.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Metro tickets

jacobite train tour

Troika card is a universal data storage device that can record any kind of ticket from the valid list of ticketing options or be used to pay for a ride on the Moscow metro with the "Wallet ticket". The card itself costs 50 rubles (this amount is refunded in cash once you return the card to the ticket office). One Metro ride using this card will cost 40 rubs. You need to top up the balance in order to use it (the maximum amount is 3000 rub). The money is stored on the card for 5 years since the last replenishment.

The card can be also used to pay for the rides in the public transport of Moscow, in suburban trains, "Aeroexpress" trains, or to pay the entrance to the Moscow Zoo, Planetarium, and Tretyakov gallery.

Useful tips

  • Avoid rush hour if possible. The busiest hours in Moscow metro are 8 am – 9.30 am and 4 pm to 7.30 pm.
  •  While following the brown-colored circular line (number 1) it is always better to enter the first or the last carriage. They are much less crowded (might even be empty at rush hour) compared to the central part of the train.
  • Put all your valuable objects in a safe place. Pickpocketing is not that frequent but might happen sometimes.
  • While using the escalator always stand on the right. The left side is used by people willing to go up or downstairs.
  • You can use free wifi inside metro trains. However first-time users need to register and confirm a local phone number.
  • Some of the metro stations have  WC. You can find detailed info here. You may pay with the same Troika card that you used to enter the metro
  • Many central stations now have Live Help desks with English-speaking staff
