Dogs on nature reserves

Dogs walking on lead

Peter Cairns 2020vision

Bringing your dogs to our reserves

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has over 40 nature reserves and many of them, including Attenborough and Idle Valley , offer lovely walks for yourself and your dog.

What does it mean to own a dog and enjoy the countryside? It can mean lots of fresh air, great views, and fantastic wildlife watching opportunities but also responsibility.

Attenborough Nature Reserve welcomes dogs that are kept on a lead. Dogs are allowed in the visitor centre as long as they are well-behaved and kept under control.

Idle Valley is also dog-friendly, though again we ask you keep dogs on leads in all areas, especially near livestock and ground nesting birds. Dogs are also allowed in the visitor centre, though please be mindful of other guests.

Dog on lead in heathland with couple

Tom Marshall

We love dogs, but wildlife isn’t as keen

Many animals, especially birds and reptiles are vulnerable to a dog running through open ground and grassland. Ground-nesting birds like curlew, wood warbler, skylarks and lapwings are very vulnerable to disturbance. Their nests are so well camouflaged they can easily be accidentally destroyed, while the added stress of a dog running across the landscape can seriously disrupt adults trying to feed their chicks. Adult birds can be frightened off and young chicks left to die.

Try and keep your dog on a lead and close to you where nesting birds are known to live.

When checking out where to walk follow our links to individual nature reserves and you will find out whether they are grazed or whether ground nesting birds are known to be found. If you are walking on Open Access land dogs must be kept on a lead no longer than 2 metres between March 1st and July 31st, to protect ground nesting birds.

What to do when you see livestock with your dog

Walking in the countryside often means seeing and coming into contact with farm animals. The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust manages many of its nature reserves using rare breed sheep and cattle to graze our sites. They are an important part of the day to day management of our grassland and heathlands.

  • When meeting a sheep with your dog, it can be stressful for both yourself and the sheep. A sheep will often run and if chased when pregnant can abort lambs. Sheep are easily brought down by a dog, which will often injure or even kill it. Even small and the friendliest of dogs can cause the sheep stress by playing. For the sake of sheep please put your dogs on a lead when in the vicinity of the flock.
  • Coming across  cows  does not mean you have to put your dog on a lead. In fact if an inquisitive cow wants to take a look it is better for you if the dog is free to get out of the way. The cow is usually more interested in your dog than you.

What about dog poo?

  • Please don’t leave it. Bag it and bin it.
  • Many nature reserves volunteers will get home to find it on their clothes and shoes. Not very pleasant.

Some of our meadows, when mown, are used to feed our livestock. We ask that you do not let your dogs foul during this time and keep them on a lead. Notices will be put up at sites planned for mowing.

  • On a more serious note dog poo spreads disease. There has been a nationwide increase in dog faeces related diseases affecting livestock. Animals can die and unborn lambs and calves can be aborted. This is of serious concern in the farming community. If dog mess was picked up and removed we would begin see this serious problem decline. For more information, you can read this article from the National Farmers Union of Scotland about dog faeces and disease.

We've picked out some of the best locations in Nottinghamshire to walk your dog.

What better way to get out and about than enjoying a fine walk with your pooch?

With miles and miles of open countryside, we're truly blessed to have plenty of parks and open spaces for your mutt to have a good old stroll.

THINGS TO DO IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

There's so much to do in Nottinghamshire

We've picked out five of the best dog walks across the county from West Bridgford to Edwinstowe and a few in between.

1: Attenborough Nature Reserve

A three-mile stroll around one of Nottinghamshire's most famous nature sites. The former pit was opened in 1966 by broadcaster David Attenborough.

Walkers can enjoy use of the on-site car parking, café and shop facilities.

2: Sherwood Pines, Edwinstowe

Those keen for a dog walk can take advantage of the 3,300 acre woodland site, and the largest forest open to the public in the East Midlands.

The site is managed by the Forestry Commission and hosts a large number of events throughout the year that are dog friendly, while the white trail is the most popular walk through the large swathes of forest.

3: Grantham Canal, Gamston

Taking in the sights and sounds of the canal, walkers can enjoy a relatively short two-mile stretch along the towpath just outside West Bridgford.

Once a vital part of the British Waterways network, the canal was a key route between Nottingham and Grantham for the transportation of coal and grain.

Professional dog walker John McGinley has launched a campaign to raise £5K for East Midlands Labrador rescue by getting dog walkers to donate £1 for every mile they walk. He is pictured with his wife Sarah alongside the Grantham Canal

4: Thieves Wood, Coxmoor Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield

One of the most popular walking spots between Nottingham and Mansfield, situated just off the A60, Thieves Wood is a rambler's paradise.

If you fancy a quick dog walk, then there is a specific loop near to the car park, which is free. There is often a refreshment van parked there too.

5: Blidworth Woods, Longdale Lane, Blidworth

This is another popular location for the dog walking community and it is situated at the southern end of Sherwood Forest with a shorter white route, plus a longer blue trail which is just over three miles.

Dog-friendly places to eat in Nottingham

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Considering that you’re about to read a post on my food & drinks blog, it should come as no surprise that I enjoy dining out. A lesser known fact about me however is that I love dogs. My TikTok feed is full of dogs being funny, adorable or both and I am definitely that person who would rather make friends with the dog than you at parties (sorry not sorry).

So, when it comes to the best places in Nottingham to enjoy lunch, dinner and every meal in between, I love any establishment where furry friends are welcome. Unfortunately, finding dog-friendly venues in the past has proven to be a bit of a faff so I’ve made a list of my favourite pup-approved places to save you the hassle of a long-winded search on Google.

Although I do mention some walking spots, the focus of this blog is very much on the food rather than dog walks. If your priority is finding somewhere scenic to walk your dog, Nottingham is home to a variety of parks and nature reserves with onsite cafés — you can find out more about these on the Visit Nottinghamshire website .

Café Sobar — 22 Friar Lane, Nottingham NG1 6DQ

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Their ‘coffee, cake, conversation’ window sign definitely needs the words ‘and canines’ adding to it — less catchy perhaps, but the friendly dogs I seem to meet on every visit to this café are a definite selling point! As a charity-run, alcohol-free café , Café Sobar not only offers tasty food but a family-friendly place to socialise and spend time. Read my latest ‘Spotlight on’ blog for more reasons why you should pay this fantastic business a visit.

Homemade Café — Forest Recreation Ground, Mansfield Road, Nottingham NG5 2BU

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Homemade Café has been a favourite brunch spot of mine for several years and it’s my number one choice for hanging out with pup pals (such as the lovely Ruby, pictured above with her owner Nina!) You’ll find Homemade in the Pavilion building at Forest Recreation Ground, a beautiful green space on the outskirts of the city centre. My food order is never the same but it always includes a scrumptious slice from Homemade’s cake counter. With a generous outdoor seating area, there’s plenty of room for dog owners to enjoy a bite to eat.

Fox Café — 9 Pelham St, Nottingham NG1 2EH

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

I’ve only had the pleasure of eating at Fox Café once before and the sole reason for that is an empty table is a rare sight at weekends! One of the most popular cafés in Nottingham, this is another excellent choice for vegan food and for lunching with canine company. As well as tasty breakfast and lunch dishes, Fox Café is the perfect place for a coffee and cake date.

Malt Cross — 16 St James’ St, Nottingham NG1 6FG

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Built in 1877 as a Victorian Music Hall, this stunning venue is part of Nottingham’s rich history. Malt Cross serves delicious pub grub and, true to its entertainment venue origins, hosts a range of popular weekly events including live music nights and pub quizzes. This bar and kitchen is also run by a local charity with all profits going to the Nottinghamshire YMCA.

Prickly Pear — 127 Mansfield Rd, Nottingham NG1 3FQ

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

The folk over at Prickly Pear are the vegan food gurus of Notts. All their food is plant-based and if you’re still holding any outdated assumptions that vegan food is lacking in flavour, this café will definitely prove you wrong! The mac ‘n’ cheese is to die for and you just can’t beat one of their indulgent milkshakes on a sunny day. This café is a short walk from both the Arboretum and Forest Recreation Ground, two excellent dog-walking locations.

Blend — Unit 30, Avenue C, Sneinton Market, Nottingham NG1 1DW

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Head down to Sneinton market, a short stroll from Hockley, to visit grilled cheese and coffee connoisseurs Blend. This local indie business has been busy expanding across the city over the last few years but their original coffee house will always have my heart. Full of natural light and bold colours, Blend in Sneinton is a lovely setting for food and I visit regularly with or without a dog in tow! It’s also laptop-friendly , making it ideal for those working from home days where you fancy a change of scenery.

Junkyard — 12 Bridlesmith Walk, Nottingham NG1 2FZ

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Tucked away on Bridlesmith Walk, Junkyard is best known for its craft beers but the food at this hidden game is also worth knowing about. Their paddleboards are great for sharing and are a good light lunch option. Stop by on a Tuesday night and you’ll catch local business Slice ‘n’ Brew serving up hot fresh pizzas in the kitchen.

Cured — 97 Carrington St, Nottingham NG1 7FE

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Cured is a bar and lounge on Carrington Street with heaps of character. Aside from an instagrammable interior, the highlight of this venue is its canal-side seating where customers can sip something cold and soak up the sun on a summer’s day. I love treating myself to one of Cured’s trademark crispy bagels on my lunch break, and cheese boards and charcuterie platters are also on the menu. Why not enjoy a dog walk along the canal and make Cured a pit stop?

Oscar & Rosie’s — 8 Stoney St, Nottingham NG1 1LP

places to visit in nottinghamshire with a dog

Oscar & Rosie’s is one of the best pizza joints in Notts, serving award-winning pizza and equally amazing side dishes. Anyone who knows me personally has had to endure my enthusiastic ramblings about the mac ‘n’ cheese at Oscar & Rosie’s and I make no apologies for this because it is the best mac ‘n’ cheese I’ve ever had and everyone should try it! Did I mention that this restaurant also has its own hashtag dedicated to doggy visitors? ( #dogsofoscarandrosies ) It doesn’t get more dog-friendly than that!

Which foodie destination will you and your dog be visiting first? Do you know a great dog-friendly place to eat in Notts that didn’t make my list? Share your recommendations in the comments!

Six Barrel Drafthouse – Victoria (next to House of Fraser) is another good place to go for food and/or drinks with you pooch!

The Hole in the Wall on North Sherwood Street has been done up and re-opened recently and they are dog friendly, but they do food yet. Its a great place to have a drink when you start and finish walking your dog round the Arboretum!
