Arkansas Scenic Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

While the state has a long and interesting history with the railroad, Arkansas offers just a few train rides. Most notably is the Arkansas & Missouri, a successful "Class II" carrier, which hosts popular trips that run as far as 134 miles! 

The A&M's story can be traced back to the fabled St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, better known as the "Frisco," which served a great deal of the southern Midwest, areas of the Southeast, and parts of Texas. 

It would join the very large Burlington Northern in 1981.  Another popular little attraction is the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway that operates on a short stretch of track that went by several different names over the last 100+ years. 

In addition to regular excursions, be sure and check out the Fort Smith Trolley Museum.   Located in its namesake town this organization hosts short trips in historic trolley cars.

State Rail History

The first railroad to serve Arkansas was the small Memphis & Little Rock Railroad. 

According to the January, 2007 issue of  Trains Magazine's which featured a nearly cover-to-cover subject on all 50 states entitled , " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," points out the M&LR's initial segment opened in 1857 when its first train, led by the locomotive Little Rock , pulled six bales of cotton. 

The company's heritage began with its chartering on January 10, 1853 by the Arkansas state legislature to link Hopefield (across the Mississippi River from downtown Memphis, Tennessee) with Little Rock.  Construction began quickly with crews in the field by 1856.

However, due to inadequate financing only about 40 miles had been opened from Hopefield to Madison by the Civil War's outbreak in 1861. 

While both the North and South utilized the property during the conflict (it was under the Union's control by 1862) this did not slow the project. 

After the so-called "Eastern Division" was finished, work on the "Western Division" between Huntersville (near Little Rock) and the White River commenced in 1861 and was completed within a year. 

While the "Middle Division" remained unfinished efforts to complete this section were hastened following the railroad's return to private control on November 1, 1865.

The needed capital again proved a problem and only through state aid, to the tune of $1.2 million, could the line be finished. 

That moment came on April 11, 1871 when the last rail was spiked down and the 133-mile corridor was opened. Unfortunately, the M&LR proved less than successfully, partly due to its poor construction. 

It subsequently went through multiple name changes and bankruptcies.  Following these shortcomings it was acquired by the Choctaw & Memphis Railroad (C&M) on October 25, 1898, a subsidiary of the larger Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad (CO&G). 

The latter company was better known as the "Choctaw Route" with a main line, at that time, linking Memphis with Texola, Oklahoma. 

In 1904 the expanding Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific acquired full control of the CO&G and its subsidiaries.  In 1910 the route was extended as far west as Tucumcari, New Mexico where it interchanged with the El Paso & Southwestern, a future component of the much larger Southern Pacific. 

The "Choctaw Route" became one of Rock Island's important corridors connecting the Southwest and Southeast (it was later abandoned after the company's 1980 liquidation). 

Today, Arkansas is home to three Class I carriers (Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, and Kansas City Southern) and maintains 2,700 miles of track from a network, according to

John Stover's book " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American R ailroads ," that peaked at over 5,000 miles during the 1920's. 

Today, there are only a handful of Arkansas train rides to choose from although the Arkansas & Missouri, a successful freight carrier, does offer very nice excursions.

Rail Excursions At A Glance

Arkansas train rides may not offer the glitz of the Strasburg Railroad or glamour of the Grand Canyon Railway. 

However, you can ride behind authentic steam locomotives at the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas (all the while enjoying a meal) or within preserved trolley cars of at the Fort Smith Trolley Museum. 

The state's greatest attraction, however, is found at freight carrier Arkansas & Missouri.  It has been in operation since 1986 utilizing a component of the former "Frisco" Railroad. 

Excursions are hosted within the following cars:

• Coach #104, named the  Biloxi Blues built by Pullman in 1917,  
• Coach #105, the  Golden Age , built by Harlan & Hollingsworth [then a Bethlehem Steel subsidiary
• Coach #106, Mountain View
• Parlor #107 (the Explorer , a 1955/56 product of Pullman-Standard)
• Dome coach #108 (named the  Silver Feather , built for the Western Pacific by the Budd Company in 1948, used on the California Zephyr )
• Diner-lounge #109 (named the Spirit of Arkansas it was built by the Budd Company in 1950 for the Southern Pacific as a coffee shop-lounge car)

As you can see the A&M provides a bevy of options that whisk passengers through the breathtaking Boston Mountains.

From a geographical standpoint, Arkansas is well known for its natural beauty with rolling, green hills, winding rivers and abundant farmland.

To this extent the Arkansas & Missouri's trips indulge visitors through miles upon miles of the state's rugged topography while crossing trestles and passing through tunnels.   

The A&M does not provide many extra accommodations/services with their excursions, such as freshly prepared meals, but their trips have become very popular and you can catch an excursion every month of the year.

For a more historic trip, however, you may want to visit the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas. While they own just a few miles of track they operate through the beautiful Ozark Mountains and also offer dinners on-board.

• Arkansas Railroad Museum

The state's largest railroad museum is based in Pine Bluff at the former St. Louis Southwestern Railway's (Cotton Belt) yard. 

The organization is operated by the Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society and features a large collection of rolling stock. 

They maintain two preserved steam locomotives, both of Cotton Belt lineage; 2-6-0 #336 (listed as Class D-3, it was manufactured by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1909) and 4-8-4 #819. 

The latter was the last in a batch of big "Northerns" the railroad's Pine Bluff Shops constructed in 1942.  It spent several years hosting excursions during the 1980's and early 1990's; today, it is once again under restoration. 

The Cotton Belt's 4-8-4's were modern steamers, utilizing oil for fuel and roller-bearings on all axles; on July 19, 1955 the #819 was donated to the city of Pine Bluff. 

The museum is unique in that it also utilizes the Cotton Belt's former shops, enabling the group to perform needed repairs and restoration projects within a large, enclosed space.  They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM and on Sunday afternoon by appointment.

• Arkansas & Missouri Railroad

The most popular of all Arkansas train rides can be found at the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad, an operating freight line which also hosts trips for the public in the state's northwestern region.  

The history of the A&M begins in 1986 when western giant Burlington Northern looked to shed trackage it saw as redundant. 

One such corridor was the former St. Louis-San Francisco Railway's route between Monett, Missouri and Paris, Texas.

Of this, the A&M received exactly 133.6 miles of the main line between Monett, Missouri (at milepost 0.0 and a connection with today's BNSF Railway, successor to Burlington Northern) and Fort Smith, Arkansas (at milepost 133.6).

Additionally, it was granted the branch from Bentonville Branch Junction (Rogers) and Bentonville, totaling 5.7 miles length. In all, the A&M began as a 139.4-mile railroad. 

Their excursions offer a number of different packages to choose from including first class, club, coach, or even the caboose. 

• Fort Smith Trolley Museum

You wouldn't think Arkansas train rides relating to trolleys would be possible but they are at the Fort Smith Trolley Museum (FSTM)! 

This organization predominantly focuses on the preservation of the region's interurban history.  In addition, they also host rides in their restored trolley car, #224 (built for the Fort Smith Light & Traction Company in 1926 as a Birney-type by the American Car Company). 

The FSTM opened as a museum in 1985 while their 3/4-mile streetcar line was dedicated on May 19, 1991. 

Along the way it passes the Fort Smith National Historic Site, Fort Smith National Cemetery, West Garrison Avenue Historic District, and 1907 Atkinson-Williams Warehouse Building (home to the Fort Smith Museum of History). 

They also have three other streetcars preserved although all are un-restored shells.

These include Fort Smith Traction, Light & Power #10 (built in 1902), Fort Smith Light & Traction #205 (a Birney-type built in 1919), and Fort Smith Light & Traction #221 (a Birney-type built in 1926). 

Finally, the group has a standard-gauged steam locomotive on the grounds; St. Louis-San Francisco 2-8-2 #4003, manufactured by American Locomotive in 1919 as a United States Railroad Administration (USRA) design.

• Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway

If you are interested in Arkansas train rides of a slightly different nature, consider the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway (ES&NA). 

This attraction is based in Eureka Springs offering excursions  behind an SW1 diesel locomotive, #4742, built by Electro-Motive in 1942 for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois (#98). 

Their property includes about 2.5 miles of a former short line, the Arkansas & Ozarks Railway, which once maintained a system of 69.37 miles (according to the 1958 Official Guide Of The Railways ). 

Its main line extended 65.04 miles from Seligman, Missouri to Harrison Arkansas. The company also maintained the following branches; 1..81 miles from Freeman, Arkansas - Berryville, Arkansas and Junction, Arkansas - Eureka Springs, Arkansas (2.52 miles). 

The latter is operated by ES&NA.  Along with standard excursions they also provide the unique experience of dinners aboard some trips. 

Finally, be sure and visit their three preserved, but non-operating, steam locomotives:

• Peter Buescher & Sohn 0-4-0T #35 (a German locomotive carrying a 600 mm gauge, manufactured by Orenstein & Koppel of Berlin in 1933)
• Moscow, Camden & San Augustine Railroad 2-6-0 #201 (built by Alco's Cooke Locomotive Works in 1905)
• 2-8-2 #226 (manufactured by Baldwin in 1927)

• Frisco Depot Museum

The Frisco Depot Museum (of Arkansas, there is also a similarly named organization in Oklahoma), based in Mammoth Spring, is housed in the town's restored 1886, Kansas City, Ft. Scott & Memphis Railway brick depot (the oldest such structure which still survives in the state). 

This system became part of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway in 1901.  As individual railroads go, the KCFtS&M comprised the largest part of the Frisco's modern network.  For more reading about the history of this classic railroad please click here . 

The organization features displays inside while a restored wooden caboose sits beside the building, Frisco #1176. 

Admission to the museum, located within Mammoth Spring State Park, is free of charge although it is not open on Mondays and only on Tuesdays by appointment.  For information and planning a visit they have a web page on the park's website.

Whether you’re looking for a true train journey or a holiday dinner adventure, you’re in luck! We’ve gathered the very best Arkansas train rides for you and your crew. All aboard!

Join us for a train ride at Arkansas Frontier!

Bring your little ones for a train ride at Arkansas Frontier! Along with all our other amazing pumpkin patch activities, we have an adorable red and green barrel train that makes for some cute holiday pictures! The train is rated for ages 2-5, and the kids love it. A ride on our farm train is fun for the kiddos, but it also gives you a chance to peruse the Morning Glory Gift Shop without the help of little fingers! We’re open every October!

Beloved Arkansas Train Rides

In this guide, we’ll cover three different types of train rides in Arkansas. The first two are passenger trains that offer a variety of excursions. Then, we’ll cover the best Christmas train in Arkansas. Finally, we’ve chosen some of the best amusement train excursions for kids across the state. Here we go!

1. The Arkansas-Missouri Railroad

By far and away, the most iconic excursion train network in the Natural State is the Arkansas-Missouri Railroad. The beloved Arkansas train consists of a series of adorable carriages and offers several different trips. Coach 105 and 106 are vintage 1920s train cars with velvet bench seating and traditional details. Car 107 and 109 are premium cars with upgraded food options. Car 108 is known as the Silver Feather Dome. It features a glass roof and sides with comfy modern seating. Let’s take a closer look at the excursion options that the Arkansas-Missouri Railroad offers.

Springdale to Van Buren

The railroad offers round-trip tourist rides from the Northwest Arkansas town of Springdale to Historic Downtown Van Buren, in the Arkansas River Valley. The Van Buren trip treats you to the ruggedly beautiful Boston Mountains, a tunnel adventure, and the adorable town of Van Buren. The 8-hour, roundtrip excursion covers 134 miles and includes a 3-hour layover to explore the historic downtown buildings of Van Buren. Fall rates range from $40-$111, depending on your choice of vintage coach, premium coach, or the Feather Dome.

Van Buren to Winslow

The Van Buren to Winslow train ride through the scenic Ozarks includes a fun pass through the long Winslow Tunnel — a whopping 1700 feet long, in fact! The round trip excursion lasts just three hours and includes several valley trestles.

Springdale to Winslow

The last scenic train ride starts in Springdale, skipping Van Buren, and goes to Winslow. You get the same mountain views and the same tunnel fun, but it’s a shorter journey. This might work better for little ones with nap times!

2. The Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway

Travel back in time to the 1940s with a ride on a diesel locomotive! The Eureka Springs tourist locomotive offers an Excursion Train and a 1920s dining car for lunch and dinner rides. The season runs from April to October.

Excursion Train

The excursion train ride is narrated by a fun conductor and includes snacks and drinks. It covers 4.5 miles and takes about an hour.

Lunch Train

The lunch train follows the same route but includes a hot entree, beverage, freshly baked rolls, and dessert. It generally takes 1.5 hours. It leaves the depot at 12 p.m. from May to October.

Dinner Train

The dinner train rolls out at 5 p.m. and spans two hours. It includes a large menu selection with wine and champagne available. This one makes for a great kid-free date night option!

Arkansas Holiday Train

3. the holiday express pajama train.

Meet Santa on the Holiday Express Train hosted by the American-Missouri Railroad. There are two round-trip routes: Van Buren to Rudy and Springdale to Johnson. The 45-minute ride includes Christmas games, visits with Santa, hot cocoa, and cookies! It runs throughout the month of December at varying times. Check their calendar for specific dates and times.

Arkansas Amusement Trains

4. creekmore express train.

For pretty much all Fort Smith residents, the Creekmore Park Express Train is a cherished childhood memory. The train has been running for decades, and it’s still providing free rides to parkgoers today. Creekmore is located in Downtown Fort Smith, across from the public library on a large shaded lot, making for a beautiful little ride. The park actually has three engines, a steam engine, a diesel engine, and an electric steam engine that rotate. Unlike most amusement trains, the Creekmore carriages are large enough for adults to tag along!

During the holiday season, Creekmore transforms into a wonderland of animated characters and light displays. The train runs at night from 5:30 to 8:30 during the Christmas season. All Creekmore trains are free to ride!

5. Little Rock Zoo Diamond Express

Explore the Little Rock Zoo on the adorable Diamond Express . The train runs from 10-4, weather permitting. It costs $3 per person, which I’ll gladly pay when it stops the whining that often accompanies long walks. The train is not only handy. It’s really cute and makes for great photos! Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

6. All Aboard Restaurant and Grill

If you have a train lover in your family, then a visit to the All Aboard is a must! Not only are your cheeseburger and fries delivered by a locomotive, but there are trains everywhere! On special occasions, like National Train Day, they even have real train rides around the parking lot!

7. Dickey Stephens Park Kid’s Train

Baseball games can be long and brutal for little kids. Take a break for a hot dog and ride on the Kid’s Train during your next visit to Dickey Stephens. Home to the minor league team, the Arkansas Travelers, Dickey Stephens Park is located in North Little Rock. Due to the long railroad heritage of the city, the whole stadium is actually built with a railway theme, so it’s a fun excursion for any train-loving family!

8. Rock Region METRO Street Car

Now, let’s head to the capitol for a ride on a ridiculously cute trolley. The Rock Region METRO Streetcar runs for four miles through the heart of Little Rock and North Little Rock. You can explore North Little Rock’s historic Argenta District, hop off at the Clinton Presidential Library, fill your belly at one of the amazing restaurants in the River Market, or visit the headquarters of Heifer International. You’ll even cross the mighty Arkansas River at one point on the journey. The best part is that the vintage streetcars are free to ride!

The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad is one of the few commercial lines left in the United States that operates both freight and passenger service. All passengers travel the regular working rails in refurbished antique passenger or parlor coaches.

The A&M offers round trip scenic tours through the Ozark Boston Mountains. Burrow through the quarter mile Winslow Tunnel and travel high trestles over 125 feet from the ground.

Fort Smith to Winslow - January - March on Saturdays

This 4-hour excursion includes travel over the Arkansas River. Lunch is available when making a reservation.

Departs: 11:00 am from the Fort Smith Trolley Museum

Springdale to Van Buren - April - Mid November on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays

This day-long, 134-mile round trip includes a three-hour layover in historic downtown Van Buren where you can enjoy lunch in one of several local cafes, shop along Main St and enjoy the rich architecture of the historic downtown buildings. Returns to Springdale between 4:30 - 5:30 pm.

Van Buren to Winslow - April - Mid November on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays

This three-hour, 70-mile round trip excursion takes you through the ruggedly beautiful Boston Mountain range of the Ozarks, over three valley trestles and through the 1700-foot long Winslow tunnel for some of the most breathtaking scenery you are likely to see in 'The Natural State'.

The first railroad in Arkansas began as a small part of the Memphis & Little Rock in 1857, with a train loaded with 6 bales of cotton pulled by the engine Little Rock . The nations last regularly scheduled steam-powered mixed train was run by the Arkansas Reader Railroad and ended operations in 1973. Today, Arkansas has 17 steam locomotives in various conditions on display in parks and museums around the state. The last steam locomotive to run excursions was the St. Louis Southwestern Railway Company (Cotton Belt Route) 4-8-4 No.819 and is now on display at the Arkansas Railroad Museum . Arkansas has over 2700 miles of trackage that are dominated by the Union Pacific Railroad . Other rail lines that also serve Arkansas are the Kansas City Southern and BNSF. There are 22 smaller railroads, ranging from the longest, the 540 mile Missouri & Northern Arkansas, down to the shortest, the 2 mile Delta Valley Southern. Amtrak’s Texas Eagle makes 5 stops across the state. The Union Pacific’s largest locomotive repair facility is located in North Little Rock.

One of the Ozarks’ largest collection of vintage rolling stock is on display at the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway. In this re-created turn-of-the-century railroading experience, modern visitors get a taste of how it was in Eureka Springs back in 1883 when rail service first arrived. The four and a half mile train ride through the Ozark hills from April through October. The 1 1/2 hour train rides run Tuesdays through Saturdays and include lunch and dinner trains. Working museum with railroad and streetcar exhibits. The Fort Smith Trolley Museum is open on weekends and trolley cars run daily from May through October and on weekends the rest of the year.

The Frisco Depot Museum is a beautifully-restored Victorian depot housing a collection of railroad memorabilia. The baggage room displays local history exhibits, and just outside is a Frisco caboose. The 1886 Frisco Depot takes you back in time to a bustling 1800s train depot. Guided and self guided tours as well as short films are available. The Mammoth Springs Depot is one of only a few depots in the nation that have been restored as museums dedicated to interpreting their roles as train depots. Closed on Mondays.

Arkansas Railroad Museum

The Arkansas Railroad Museum is located in the former Cotten Belt locomotive shops. Two Cotten Belt Railroad steam engines are on display, the 1942 St Louis Southwestern Railway Co. 4-8-4 No 819 along with the SSW 2-6-0 No. 336. Open Monday through Saturday.

The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad operates 139 miles of former St Louis San Francisco trackage from Monett, Mo. to Ft Smith, Ark. through the Boston Mountains of northwest Arkansas. Relax as you ride in style on meticulously restored air conditioned antique passenger cars, that include a first-class parlor car and a 1940’s caboose. Your scenic train ride will wind through river valleys, traverse 3 high trestles, and cut into a 1702 foot tunnel. Enjoy the story telling and rich historical anecdotes as told by your friendly and fun-loving conductors while tending to your safety and other needs you may require. Several Special Departures are scheduled each year – either as part of area celebrations such as Bikes, Blues and Barbeque festival; elegant black-tie service dinner excursions or other special occasions. Spring Foliage Specials begin in April and run on weekends. Fall Foliage Specials are very popular and sell out quickly. Stop overs include a 1901 Frisco depot for shopping or dining.

Ride the Rails on Arkansas’ Excursion Train

All aboard!

With one short blow of the whistle and a chugga-chug-chug we were off to an adventure on the A&M Railroad Excursion Train through the mountains and valleys of Northwest Arkansas.

As my children were gazing out the beautiful windows of the impeccably-restored first-class passenger car, I was daydreaming of days gone by – wondering how life may have been in 1947 when the car was new, and the locomotive was powered by steam. I was taken back to when Arkansans relied on the rails.

The bounce of the cars was very relaxing – putting me deeper into my dream-like state, even though, at times, it seemed as if the cars were going to bounce apart by the way they moved to and fro. I was suddenly awakened by two long, one short, and one long blow of the whistle announcing that we were approaching a railroad crossing. Reality.

It was a beautiful spring morning – 74 degrees. Perfect weather for a day outing. We traveled through the ruggedly beautiful Boston Mountain range of the Ozarks, into the historic Arkansas River Basin and over three valley trestles crossing deep canyons.

The view atop the 120-foot high railroad trestles was like no other. You could see miles of God-created beauty. I was reminded why Arkansas is the Natural State.

We were approaching the long-awaited Winslow Tunnel. Emily Claire’s eyes widened with excitement, and Hunter stood to get a better view. “There it is! There it is!” I heard. And so did everybody else! Just then, our vintage passenger car went pitch black – adding to the excitement.

There is nothing quite like a tunnel – any tunnel – when you are between the ages of 2 and 5. At twenty-four feet high, nineteen feet wide and a quarter mile long, the Winslow Tunnel is impressive to any age. It opened to rail traffic in 1882 and was enlarged in the late 1960s to accommodate larger engines and railroad cars. And, right now, it was allowing us to take this amazing journey.

Before long, we arrived at Old Frisco Station in historic Van Buren. It welcomed us just as it had countless others for over a century.

After a three-hour layover, we boarded the train for our return home.

Clickety-clack, clickety-clack went the train and off to sleep went my sweet babies. As for me, I drifted back to my daydreams with the help of our spirited conductor’s stories of an era long ago.

As we pulled back into the A&M Depot in Springdale, I was thankful my family can experience the “Golden Age of Travel” in today’s modern world. But, admittedly, I am even more grateful for my mini-van with automatic doors and a DVD player!

Amtrack Exhibit Train

For an extra special train experience, hop on board the Amtrak Exhibit Train . It will pull into the A&M Railroad Depot on Emma Avenue in Downtown Springdale for a special event, June 14-15. The train will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge.

Train enthusiasts will be able to learn about Amtrak’s history, discover the future of high-speed rail, work the signal display and engineer’s stand and much more. While there, be sure to visit the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad Museum.

In partnership with the historic Royal Gorge Railroad, we are offering a combo trip of a scenic train ride through the Royal Gorge, along with a half-day or quarter-day river trip. Families with young children or seniors will love the scenic float down the Cottonwood Canyon. If you're looking for more thrill, the Bighorn Sheep Canyon is our most popular trip and perfect for you and your group!

On both trips, you'll enjoy a hearty riverside lunch and wildlife sightings. The train ride follows the Arkansas River as it carves through a 1,000-foot deep gorge and usually lasts 2-2.5 hours. The train ride will end back where it started, dropping you back off at your car.

We require children to be 4+ years old for Cottonwood Canyon rafting (gentle rapids) and 7+ for rafting the Bighorn Sheep Canyon (Class II-III rapids).

We raft daily from the beginning of May through Labor Day weekend. The season can be extended if conditions permit.

We can fit 6 to 7 guests in a raft depending on the group’s size, plus your guide.

Transportation to and from the river, helmet, PFD/life jacket and splash jacket. Lunch is also provided on full-day tours.

After your morning of rafting and eating your gourmet meal, you will have a break in the day and need to drive to the Royal Gorge railroad station for a 3:30pm departure. Travel time is 35 minutes.

It is recommended but not required. We take non-swimmers down this stretch on a normal basis.

The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad offers a scenic train tour that takes you up mountains, across high trestles, and through the famous Winslow Tunnel to see the peak fall foliage in the Boston Mountains.

The train ride is not only an adventure but also an opportunity to learn about the history of the small towns along the trip between Springdale and Van Buren.

The train cars themselves are historic and offer a unique ambiance.

"There's an ambience to every single car," Ron Zimmerman, lead conductor, said.

Passengers can choose from a range of rates, from $40 to just over $100 , depending on the type of car and amenities.

One group of passengers on the train ride was a group of women who grew up going to middle school together in Oklahoma, and now have a tradition of getting together every year to do something fun.

"Recently we’ve been getting together every year and doing something really fun and this year it’s this train ride. A cherry on top of a couple days together," Madeline Uraneck said.

For young passengers, the train ride offers a sense of excitement and adventure. Monroe Bassett, a young passenger, loved when the lights in the train turned off while zooming through the long Winslow Tunnel.

"My favorite part was the tunnel because it was super dark for a long time and then it was just light," Bassett said.

The ride also provides an opportunity to remember the individuals who gave their lives to build the historic railroad, including those who died during a smallpox epidemic. Zimmerman notes that there is a memorial to these individuals along the route.

The train ride takes you through the beautiful Boston Mountains, where you can see the peak fall foliage from high in the sky.

After traveling three hours south, you arrive in Van Buren, where you can grab lunch and shop local. The train then takes you back to the train station in Springdale, completing a 134-mile round trip.
