Desert safari attracts people of all ages, as they offer a plethora of adventurous activities in the stunning Arabian desert. However, pregnant women must exercise increased caution whenever they want to go on these safaris.

Desert safaris are safe for pregnant women as long as they are not taking part in extreme activities like dune bashing, sandboarding or even camel riding. Safari activities that do not require too much movement are safe for pregnant ladies. For increased caution, pregnant women should avoid going on desert safaris.

Let’s see what activities make desert safari different and whether or not they are safe for pregnant women.

Is Desert Safari Safe for Pregnancy? Exploring Dubai Desert Safari Activities

Desert safaris in Dubai encompass a range of thrilling activities that entice adventurers from around the world.

Dune Bashing

Dune bashing involves a thrilling ride over the undulating sand dunes in a 4×4 vehicle. Due to the sudden and vigorous movements, this activity is a straight no for pregnant women, irrespective of their trimester. This is even considered risky for normal individuals .

The jolts and bumps experienced during dune bashing can potentially put undue stress on the expectant mother and the developing baby and even cause miscarriage.

Camel Riding

Camel riding is a quintessential part of the desert safari experience. While it may seem gentle and enjoyable, the swaying motion of the camel can cause discomfort and strain on the pregnant woman’s body.

It is best for expectant mothers to avoid camel riding due to the risk of falls or sudden movements.

Falconry Displays

Falconry displays showcase the traditional hunting technique using trained falcons. These displays usually take place in open desert spaces and involve loud noises and sudden bird movements. Pregnant women should exercise caution during falconry displays to avoid any startle or stress responses.

Sandboarding

Sandboarding involves gliding down sand dunes on a board, similar to snowboarding. The activity requires balance and coordination, which can be challenging for pregnant women.

Furthermore, the potential risk of falls or collisions makes sandboarding unsuitable during pregnancy.

So this activity is also a straight no for pregnant women.

Bedouin Camp Activities

A typical desert safari includes a visit to a Bedouin camp, where several cultural activities take place. These may include henna painting, Shisha smoking, traditional music, and belly dancing. Pregnant women can participate in these activities that involve minimal physical exertion and pose no significant risks.

Sunset Photography

Capturing the mesmerizing desert sunset is a popular activity during a desert safari. Expectant mothers can certainly enjoy this serene and picturesque experience without any adverse effects on their health.

Barbecue Dinner

The desert safari experience is often accompanied by a delectable barbecue dinner. Pregnant women can indulge in culinary delights and savor the flavors of traditional Arabic cuisine without any concerns, as long as the food is prepared and handled hygienically.

Why are Dubai Desert Safaris Not Considered Safe for Pregnant Women?

Here are some reasons why pregnant women should avoid desert safari.

Physical Exertion

Most activities of desert safari strain the body and potentially lead to complications during pregnancy. The jolts, bumps, and sudden movements experienced during these activities are dangerous for both the mother and the baby.

Risk of Falls and Injuries

The uneven desert terrain, coupled with the adventurous nature of activities like camel riding and dune bashing, increases the risk of falls and injuries.

Pregnant women may experience changes in their balance and coordination, making them more susceptible to accidents or falls. Even a minor fall can have serious consequences for both the mother and the baby.

Vibrations and Jolts

Activities like dune bashing involve rapid movements, jolts, and vibrations that can put stress on the expectant mother’s body.

These sudden movements may not be suitable for the delicate nature of pregnancy, as they can potentially lead to complications such as placental abruption or preterm labor.

Lack of Immediate Medical Assistance

The remote desert locations of the safari activities make it challenging to access immediate medical assistance in case of emergencies or complications arising during pregnancy.

The nearest medical facilities may be far away, and the response time for emergency services may be delayed. This lack of immediate medical assistance can pose a significant risk to both the mother and the baby in case of unforeseen complications.

Extreme Weather Conditions

Desert safaris often expose participants to extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures and dry climates.

Pregnant women are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration and heat exhaustion, which can have adverse effects on both the mother and the baby. It is crucial to prioritize the well-being and comfort of the expectant mother in such environments.

Potential Exposure to Dust and Allergens

Desert safaris involve traversing through sandy terrains, which can result in exposure to dust, allergens, and pollutants.

Pregnant women are generally advised to minimize exposure to environmental irritants and allergens, as they can potentially trigger respiratory issues or allergic reactions.

How to Plan Dubai Desert Safari While Being Pregnant

But if you are still aiming to plan a desert safari despite being pregnant, here is your planner.

Consult Your Healthcare Provider

Before planning a desert safari, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess your overall health, provide specific recommendations based on your pregnancy, and offer guidance regarding travel and physical activities.

Your healthcare provider’s advice is invaluable in determining if a desert safari is suitable for you during pregnancy.

Choose a Reputable Safari Operator

Selecting a reputable safari operator is of utmost importance to ensure your safety and well-being during the desert safari.

Research and choose an operator with a track record of prioritizing safety, maintaining well-maintained vehicles, and employing experienced guides.

Look for operators who are knowledgeable about pregnancy-related considerations and can provide appropriate guidance throughout the safari.

Avoid High-Risk Activities

While participating in some activities during a desert safari may not be recommended for pregnant women, there are still alternative experiences you can enjoy.

Opt for activities that are gentle, pose minimal risk, and do not involve strenuous physical exertion. Examples of desert safari activities may include enjoying the cultural aspects of the Bedouin camp, such as henna painting, Shisha smoking (if you are comfortable with it), traditional music, and belly dancing.

These activities allow you to immerse yourself in the desert ambience without compromising your safety or that of your baby.

Stay Hydrated and Wear Suitable Clothing

The desert climate can be hot and arid, which can potentially lead to dehydration and overheating. It is crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the safari.

Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing made of lightweight fabrics to promote air circulation and keep you cool. Additionally, don’t forget to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Plan for Rest and Breaks

Pregnancy requires extra care and attention to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the baby. When planning a desert safari, factor in regular breaks and opportunities to rest.

The desert environment can be physically demanding, so listen to your body and take breaks when needed. Consider scheduling shorter durations for the safari or opting for a less physically demanding tour to ensure your comfort and reduce the risk of exhaustion.

Pack Essential Items

When preparing for a desert safari during pregnancy, pack essential items to ensure your comfort and well-being.

These may include comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat or a cap to shield yourself from the sun, sunglasses, a lightweight shawl or scarf for sun protection, and any necessary medications prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Carrying a small cooler with chilled water bottles and healthy snacks can also be beneficial during the safari.

Be Mindful of Food Safety

While enjoying the barbecue dinner at the desert camp, exercise caution regarding food safety. Ensure that the food is prepared hygienically, cooked thoroughly, and stored at appropriate temperatures.

Avoid consuming undercooked meats, raw seafood, or unpasteurized dairy products, as they may pose a risk of foodborne illnesses.

Stay Mindful of the Heat

The desert can get extremely hot, particularly during certain times of the year. Take precautions to protect yourself from excessive heat exposure.

Stay in shaded areas whenever possible, use a sun umbrella or hat, and apply sunscreen regularly to shield yourself from the sun’s rays. Additionally, keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the safari.

Consider the Trimester

The trimester of your pregnancy can impact your comfort level and the safety considerations during a desert safari.

As pregnancy progresses, certain activities may become more challenging or pose increased risks. Consult with your healthcare provider to determine the most suitable time to undertake a desert safari based on your specific pregnancy journey.

Final Words

The bottom line is that it is always advisable to wait a bit before going on your desert safari. In fact, you may not be able to go on this trip immediately after giving birth, as desert trips are not considered safe for infants as well.

Dubai Desert Safari With Infant

Desert Safari Dubai With Infant

Are you a parent with a little one in tow, wondering if a desert safari in Dubai is possible with an infant? Well, the short answer is YES! But before you dismiss the idea as impossible or too risky, hear us out.

We understand that traveling with an infant can be challenging, but with a little planning and preparation, you can experience one of the most exciting adventures in the world.

A desert safari in Dubai with your little one can be a memorable and rewarding experience for the whole family. In this blog post, we’ll share with you everything you need to know about planning a desert safari in Dubai with an infant and tips for keeping your baby safe and comfortable in the desert.

So, please grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let’s dive into the adventure!

Planning a Desert Safari With Infant

desert safari with infant

Planning a desert safari with an infant can initially seem daunting. But with the right preparation, it can be an incredible adventure for the whole family.

One of the most important factors to consider when planning your desert safari is selecting the right time of day for your safari.

Dubai’s desert climate can be extreme, with temperatures soaring during the day and dropping drastically at night. Therefore, it’s crucial to plan your safari during the optimal time of day to ensure your infant is comfortable and safe.

1. Choosing the Right Time For Safari

Early morning or late afternoon/evening is the best time to plan your desert safari tour . During these times, the temperature is cooler, making it easier for your infant to handle the heat.

Additionally, the lighting at these times provides beautiful views of the desert dunes, with the rising or setting sun casting golden hues over the dunes.

However, it’s important to note that the timing may vary depending on the season.

2. Choosing the Right Type of Safari

Understanding the different types of desert safaris and which one is best for your family and infant is also crucial.

Several types of desert safaris are available in Dubai, including dune bashing, camel riding, quad biking, and more.

Each type of safari has unique features and intensity, so it’s essential to choose one that is appropriate for your family and infant.

Dune bashing, for example, may not be suitable for infants due to the rough terrain and high-speed movements, while camel riding may provide a smoother and more comfortable ride.

3. Making Reservation in Advance

Booking in advance and confirming your reservation is also a great option when planning your desert safari.

Booking a desert tour in advance will give you plenty of time to research different tour operators, compare prices, and read reviews from previous customers.

It will also give you ample time to plan and prepare for your safari with your infant. Confirming your reservation ahead of time will also ensure that your spot is secured and prevent any last-minute cancellations or disappointments.

Preparing for the Desert Safari Dubai With Infant

Preparing for a desert safari with an infant requires careful consideration of what to bring and how to keep your baby safe and comfortable during the adventure. Packing essentials for your infant is crucial in ensuring that you have everything you need for your safari.

1. Packing Essentials For Your Infant

Clothing is essential, and it’s important to pack lightweight and breathable clothes for your infant to keep them comfortable in the desert heat. Diapers, wipes, and food are also important items to pack, as there may need to be access to these necessities during the safari.

2. Bringing a Baby Carrier or Stroller

Bringing a baby carrier or stroller suitable for the terrain is also important. A baby carrier will allow you to keep your hands free while carrying your infant, and it’s also easier to navigate the dunes with a carrier than a stroller. If you bring a stroller, ensure it’s suitable for the terrain and has large wheels to navigate the sand.

3. Packing Sunscreen and Protective Clothing

Packing sunscreen and protective clothing are also crucial to keep your baby safe from the sun. The desert sun can be intense, and it’s essential to protect your infant’s delicate skin from harmful UV rays. Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and a hat can provide additional protection.

4. Bringing a First Aid Kit

A first aid kit and medications are also necessary when planning a desert safari with an infant. It’s important to be prepared for unexpected situations, such as insect bites, cuts, or scrapes. Make sure to pack basic first aid supplies, such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relief medication, in emergencies.

Staying Safe and Comfortable in The Desert With an Infant

Staying safe and comfortable in the desert with an infant is of utmost importance, and there are several key factors to consider when embarking on a desert safari adventure.

1. Safety Guidelines

Following safety guidelines provided by the tour operator is essential to ensure the safety of you and your family, including your infant. It’s important to pay attention to any safety briefings provided and adhere to the rules and regulations set by the tour operator.

2. Knowing What To Do in Case of an Emergency

In the case of an emergency, it’s important to know what to do and who to contact. Make sure to have the contact information of the tour operator and any emergency services readily available, and follow any instructions given by the operator in case of an emergency.

3. Keeping Your Baby Cool and Hydrated in The Hot Desert Climate

Make sure to bring plenty of water and fluids for your infant, and keep them in the shade as much as possible. It’s also a good idea to pack a portable fan or cooling mist to keep your baby comfortable in the heat.

4. Using The Right Gear to Protect Your Baby From Sand and Dust

Consider packing a lightweight, breathable cover for your baby’s carrier or stroller, as well as a hat and sunglasses to protect their eyes and face from the sun and sand.

5. Keeping your baby comfortable during the safari ride

Consider bringing their favorite toys, and adjust their clothing and gear to ensure they’re comfortable throughout the ride. It’s also important to take breaks as needed to allow your infant to stretch and move around.

Guidelines for Safely Traveling on Safari While Pregnant

Kenya Vacation

Embarking on a safari adventure during pregnancy? Fret not – with the right precautions, you can enjoy a safe and pleasant trip. Here’s a concise guide for pregnant women traveling to East Africa.

Ideal Travel Time

The second trimester is the optimal period for a safari trip. By this time, morning sickness has usually passed, and you’re not yet burdened by extreme fatigue and a large belly. This trimester carries a lower risk of miscarriage, and delaying further might clash with the nesting instinct.

While some airlines permit travel until your 36th week of pregnancy, most demand a doctor’s note from the 28th week onward. Regardless of your pregnancy stage, ensure you have insurance covering preterm birth and medical care, if needed.

Consult Your Doctor

Before finalizing plans, consult your OBGYN. Generally, doctors find travel acceptable, but if East Africa is your destination, obtaining your doctor’s approval is wise. They might prescribe safe preventative medications for the journey. Besides, research hospitals near your Tanzanian travel spot and secure comprehensive traveler’s medical insurance, encompassing childbirth-related concerns.

Travel Duration

The trip’s length depends on your well-being. While a weekend might be insufficient for a journey to East Africa, your comfort and health come first. If fatigue or warning signs arise, consider shortening the trip. On the other hand, if you’re feeling energetic and adventurous, don’t curtail your expedition – just remain vigilant about local healthcare facilities.

Hiking Considerations

East Africa often involves mountain hikes, which can be excellent cardiovascular workouts for expectant mothers, not to mention the breathtaking views. However, safety should be paramount during pregnancy. Inform your doctor about your hiking intentions. Stick to even terrains to maintain balance and consider having a hiking partner for emergencies. Stay connected or have a means of communication, and prioritize hydration and nourishing snacks.

Beach Precautions

If beach relaxation is on the agenda, sun protection is vital. Pregnancy hormones heighten skin sensitivity to sunlight, so apply ample sunscreen and minimize direct sun exposure.

By following these guidelines, you can savor your East African safari while ensuring your well-being and safety throughout your pregnancy journey.

Al Awir- Arabian Desert:

Al Awir desert that lies in close proximity to Dubai, is part of the great Arabian desert. The fourth largest desert (source:  geology.com ), and the second largest dry subtropical desert  in the world, the Arabian desert covers almost the entire Arabian peninsula. At one corner of this awe inspiring stretch of sand (23,30,000 sq. km.) lies Al Awir desert near Dubai.

Though it has little biodiversity to boast of, its mesmerizing landscape and rich cultural heritage make it an ideal place for desert fun.

Desert Safari locations in and around Dubai

Dubai boasts a spectrum of desert safari locations, offering numerous captivating sights and sounds to explore. With its proximity to the city center, Al Awir is one of the most convenient desert safari locations, particularly for first-timers. The mysterious landscape of Al Lahbab is another popular desert safari spot featuring compelling dunes painted in fiery red and golden orange hues.

If you’re seeking a more protected and preserved experience, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) awaits, nestled away on the Dubai-Al Ain Road. It is also the venue for more exciting desert adventures, such as the hot air balloon ride.

Venturing beyond Dubai opens up more possibilities for those looking for added fun and exhilaration. They allow for an extended journey into the heart of the Arabian sands. First dilemma : Self-drive or Fully Guided?

The desert may seem isolated, but it is mostly safe. The best thing is that it takes a mere 40 to 45 minutes’ drive to arrive at Dubai’s desert locations like Al Awir and Lahbab. If you are a seasoned adventurer with exceptional desert driving skills, you can easily navigate the dunes in your preferred 4X4 vehicle. But, as a tourist, it is vital to ensure you possess an international driving license to make the most of this Dubai desert safari experience.

Now if you prefer to leave the handling of mighty wheels and the fear of them getting stuck in stubborn sands behind, the most convenient and hassle-free option is to book a guided desert safari . With this option, you can entrust your challenging desert drive to an accomplished 4X4 driver. He will safely lead you through the desert trails. This way, while you adore the desert’s true charm, your service provider takes care of the details. Basically, they will take care of everything from transfers to dining, entertainment and beyond.

Top experiences on a guided Desert Safari in Dubai

Dubai’s deserts, at first glance, may appear like a desolate expanse of sand. But as your chosen vehicle, like a Land Cruiser or Hummer, propels you forward into the heart of the desert, a world of wonders unfolds. And here are some exciting things you can expect to enjoy on a desert safari in Dubai:

It is the highpoint of any adventurous desert safari package. It is nothing but an electrifying ride over the desert sands, where excitement meets laughter in a whirlwind of emotions. Beyond the sheer adrenaline rush and fun elements, this drive takes you deep into the remote stretches of the desert. Moreover, it allows you to appreciate the nature’s pristine beauty and serenity in all its grandeur.

Camel Ride:

Step back in time on a wobbly yet delightful camel ride. It lets you experience the pulse of a bygone era when this animal was the lifeline of desert food and transportation. Appreciate the resilience of the desert’s flora and fauna from a new perspective during the ride. The ride will compel you to admire how they have gracefully adapted to survive extreme weather conditions and elongated water scarcity.

Desert Sunrise and Sunset Views:

Depending on your desert safari timing, you can see this everyday natural phenomenon up close. Yes, witness the majestic sun as it smears the horizon with vibrant hues, bidding farewell or igniting the start of a new day. For those seeking the ultimate experience, an overnight safari promises a breathtaking display of both sunset and sunrise, leaving you in absolute awe.

A desert safari is not just an expedition into Dubai’s uncharted side; it’s also a playground to unleash or fuel your adventurous side. Apart from the dune bash, most service providers offer additional activities for thrill-seekers, such as dune buggy rides, sandboarding, and quad biking.

Bedouin Hospitality:

No desert safari is complete without a visit to a traditional Bedouin-style camp, a haven of Emirati culture and hospitality. These camps are reminiscent of a simpler time, evoking the down-to-earth charm of ancient times. Immerse yourself in the ambiance and feel the warmth of the surroundings, transporting you to a world of authentic Arabian traditions.

The Bedouins:

Bedouins are one of the oldest inhabitants of the Arabian deserts. Like me, if you also wonder about how the early traders traversed through the silk route in ancient times, have a look at the Bedouins. They are known for their resilience, hospitality and resilience. They still maintain the same family values and adherence to their cultural ethos.

Cultural Activities and Traditional Performances:

Experience the region’s culture and traditions through a myriad of activities. There are henna artists to adorn your hands with stunning Arabic henna designs. Feel regal as you partake in the age-old tradition of smoking Shisha. Besides, do create precious memories by wearing traditional Emirati costumes for a souvenir photo. You will also be entertained by breathtaking Arabic shows, including the enchanting Tanoura and mesmerizing belly dance performances.

Tanoura-Dance

Belly Dance:

The world famous belly dance originated in Egypt in the ancient times.  Since then, it has been in popular culture in the middle east.  The hip-and-belly articulation dance form has two main social contexts in Egypt- a folk dance, and a social dance. While the folk variant is performed in traditional attires, social dance is for commoners in their day-to-day attires.

Starting the 18th century, the Europeans visiting the Arab world started popularizing it in the western world. In course of time, it has invaded the cultures across the world, especially through movies.

BBQ Dining:

It is integral to most evening and overnight desert safaris. Subject to your chosen desert safari company, be prepared to dine on an array of delectable delights. From freshly prepared starters to piping hot soups, mouth-watering main courses, succulent seasonal fruits, and luscious Arabic desserts, you can treat your taste buds to a sensory feast.

Dinner in the Desert:

It promises a tranquil evening under the desert sky as you skip all heart-racing activities. Moreover, immerse yourself in a relaxed ambiance where cultural experiences, and a delectable BBQ dinner take center stage.

Overnight Desert Safari: Camping in the desert

One of the great aspects of a desert safari is that it can be easily integrated into your travel itinerary, regardless of time availability. Because whether you plan to spend a day, two, or an entire week in Dubai, you can plan accordingly. After all, it spans just a few hours—one to two hours in the morning or an entire evening.

  • To ensure your safety and peace of mind, it is wise to count on the expertise of a seasoned desert safari provider rather than choosing to self-drive.
  • Once you choose your desert safari company, book your desert package well in advance to secure your spot without any hassles.
  • Pregnant women and individuals with injuries, fractures, or cardiovascular conditions should exercise caution and refrain from participating in these pulse-racing experiences like dune bashing, quad biking, and sandboarding.
  • Shield yourself from the desert sun’s intensity by applying sunscreen lotion generously. Don a wide-brim hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes and face from the desert sunlight.
  • Dress appropriately to suit the desert’s elements. For summers: wear comfortable linen or cotton attire. For the winters (December to March): carry a light jacket or shawl.
  • Equip yourself with a quality pair of sneakers that can withstand the sandy terrain.
  • While selecting your desert safari package, consider your preferences for transfers. Budget-friendly options may offer shared transfers with the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers. Alternatively, for an indulgent and luxurious experience, you can choose a deluxe or premium desert safari with private transfers and personalized attention in every tour aspect.
  • Alcohol is typically not included in desert safaris. However, many service providers offer the option to enjoy alcoholic beverages at the camp for an additional charge.

Dubai’s desert holds infinite possibilities that cater to both the wildest of adventurers and those seeking a pleasant escape. So all you need to do is choose a desert safari experience that resonates with your desires. Whether you select a standard desert safari, an overnight safari, or a self-drive desert adventure, it is a must-experience that leaves you with cherished memories.

Is Going on Safari Dangerous?

Tips on how to stay safe

is desert safari safe for pregnancy

moodboard / Getty Images

Every safari has an element of danger; that's what makes it exciting. While many of the animals you'll encounter can be dangerous , the four that you really have to watch out for are—elephant, lion, buffalo , and hippo (add crocodiles to that list if you're near water).

Most safari operators and guides at the various lodges and game reserves will stress basic precautions you need to take while game viewing. It will also help if you follow basic safari etiquette. If you are on safari in smaller, more remote game parks or encounter wildlife outside of game parks, here are some general rules to follow:

If You Are in a Vehicle

  • Always stay in your car. When driving in a game park remain in your vehicle. Only get out at designated "hides" and follow the rules that will be posted. There have been several fatalities that occurred because a hapless tourist has wandered out of their vehicle, camera in hand, to get a closer shot of an elephant or lion. It may sound silly, but it happens.
  • Don't stand up or stick anything out of the car . Many safari vehicles are open-topped, and the wildlife is generally accustomed to these. But, if you stand up or wave something around on the side, some animals will get annoyed and consequently aggressive. You also have to remember that poaching is rife in many areas, and anything that looks like a gun can trigger a very nasty response from a wild animal.
  • Drive slowly and carefully . During the wet season, the grass can get quite high, and it's not always possible to tell when a large buffalo or elephant will decide to step into the middle of the road. Remember, you have to stop if this happens. Buffalos and elephants are not in the least bit afraid or impressed by you or your car.
  • Keep your windows up . If you are in a car with windows, it's better to keep them closed. You could end up being harassed by baboons as you drive through the more popular game parks. They are so habituated to cars they are not afraid to leap upon them and dent the roof. You don't want one inside your vehicle.

If You Are on Foot

If you are on a walking safari, you will no doubt be briefed on safety by your guides. But, there are times when you'll be walking in Africa and encounter wildlife without a guide. You could run into elephants even in the middle of town. Baboons are also a menace in many places and a lot larger than you think. Here are some basic tips if you encounter wildlife eye to eye:

  • Try and stay downwind from the animal . If the animal catches your scent, it will know you are there, and you have no idea whether this will make it angry or afraid.
  • If an animal you approach looks hostile, make sure you are not in the way of its escape route . Give the animal a clear birth and don't make any noise to aggravate the situation further.
  • Walk away slowly . If you encounter an animal that doesn't like your presence move back slowly and quietly.
  • Avoid swimming in rivers or lakes unless you are absolutely sure there are no hippos or crocodiles. Hippos are the most dangerous of all the big animals. They feed on the banks of the river, and if they sense danger will charge and attack whatever lies in their path in order to get back to the safety of the water.
  • If you are camping out in the open, always make sure you have something covering you even if it's just a mosquito net. Hyenas like to check out camps for leftover food and are especially attracted to protruding objects, so keep your feet and nose inside that tent or net.
  • Always wear boots and socks when walking around the bush . There are plenty of venomous snakes and scorpions around that could bite you.
  • Don't walk around at night in areas where you know there is wildlife present that can be potentially harmful to you. That includes the beaches and around lakes where hippos graze between tents on a camping safari. Also, be careful in towns. Hyenas wander around freely in the capital city of Lilongwe in Malawi, so always be cautious.

  • April 16, 2022

Holidaying in Dubai is a luxury in and of itself, but in terms of enhancing it and partaking in the true voyage, you must add a couple of extra items to your bucket list. In one of them, you can go on a desert safari in Dubai. It is one of the daring activities that have triggered people’s desire to see the entire city of Dubai. The ideal months to go on a desert tour in Dubai are November to March. In the daytime, the weather remains pleasant. The nights aren’t particularly cold. The weather is ideal for this kind of endeavor.

A Desert Safari Dubai is an intriguing, outdoorsy, and remarkable way to luxuriate and embrace the native culture. It is also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Arabian wilderness, so travelers from all around the globe will flock to see the desert and Bedouin life. As a result, Dubai has become a world-renowned tourism destination. Not only does the Dubai desert safari tour offer breathtaking views of the Arabian Desert, but it also offers riveting safari rides that entice visitors to return again and again. Vacationers who enjoy thrill rides, in specific, will have the best desert safari in Dubai.

Safari drive, 4×4 Biking, sand bashing, BBQ, camel ride, belly dance live performance, and many other exciting and fun-filled endeavors end up making your Dubai safari tour the most captivating and quest encounter. And to make the experience easier, we’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks for you to know before you visit the Dubai Desert. A desert safari is an opportunity to get away from city life, reconnect with nature, and enjoy with your family and friends, in addition to the stunning highrises, stubbornly good food scene, good pubs, and swarming art and culture vibe, the Emirates have a lot to add when it tends to come to outdoor escapades.

The operator breaks it or makes it for you! No matter how eventful your safari itinerary looks, the operator will either make it the best day of your life or the worse. So choose wisely.

Tip to Pick Out a Great Dubai Desert Safari Operator

Find one with many years of experience, so they know how to handle any situation. Read lots of online testimonials to pick the best!

Timing Matters!

Dubai Desert Safaris are available at various times, which adds to your preference. Plan your day’s itinerary and choose between morning and evening safaris. The morning safari usually starts around 8:30 a.m., there’s something mesmerizing about heading out into the dunes while the city around you sleeps; desert sunrises can be truly spectacular, and if you want to splurge and add a hot air balloon ride to your itinerary, morning is the time to do so.

It’s also cooler in the early morning for obvious reasons, but the glare of the mid-afternoon heat may shrivel up the spirits of children or elderly companions. If you intend to tour the city’s other sights, you can vote for the morning desert safari that will give you adequate time to discover the city at your leisure. A late-afternoon desert safari, on the other hand, has a lot of appeals, not least because of the later start time. This option typically begins between 3 pm and 4 pm, which means you should be seated pretty on top of a sand dune by sunset. Evening Dubai desert safaris are well-known for their stunning sunsets and snazzy breeze waves from the wilderness.

However, the packages are certainly eventful; no matter what time of day it is, the desert charisma and splendor will remain the very same, and there will be no undermining in amusement.

Here’s How to Make the Most of your Dubai Desert Safari

Book a bbq private dinner.

Enhance your desert experience with a private BBQ dinner under the stars. End the magnificent day with a bang! A private luxurious moment like this can just be your moment of the day. Pre Dubai Desert Safari Measures

Precautionary measures .

Always bring plenty of water before beginning your voyage in the desert, particularly before dune bashing, which is a bouncing voyage. So, if you really want a true sandy experience, never stock up on water or other food items before embarking on the thrilling trip.

Always wear a proper hat, sunniest, and a high-definition camera to capture all exhilarating remembrances. Drones are not permitted during desert trips, so it is best to avoid bringing them with you. Your dress code should be appropriate for the climate and surroundings, such as loose dress suits that do not irk you all through your adventurous journey. Also, carry a jacket, the evening breeze is going to make you crave one.

Physical Caution

Dune bashing is not preferred for visitors with cardiac or back problems. Pregnant women are specifically forbidden from participating in this bumpy safari. Pregnant women can forgo the dune bashing and go straight to the desert camp to relish the desert safari exercises. Pregnant women are not advised to go on a morning desert safari. In that case, you can book a desert safari that does not include dune bashing.

Check-in with Everyone

If you and your family are not comfortable with a live belly dance show or shisha smoking, you can book a desert tour without it; your safari captain will pick you up from the desert camp before the show begins and will exclude the activity; or book a morning desert tour. There are no belly dance shows during the morning safari tour.

Learned from the Field

Fill your backpack with water bottles and tissues..

Whereas the desert safari will undoubtedly have free-flowing water, I would recommend bringing a bottle of water with you. It takes an hour to drive out to the desert, and it’s always a good idea to bring your own water bottle at least for the journey there and back. Another thing and this isn’t a requirement, but it’s a better option, is to trade in your snazzy purses for a strong backpack. It will be much easier to enjoy yourself when you are not concerned about your wallet. Don’t forget to drink some water while you’re jumping in the sand. The sun quickly dehydrates you, so it’s critical to replenish your fluids.

Take in the Sunset

While this should go without saying, I believe it is necessary to mention it. Don’t forget to set aside some time to watch a desert sunset. It’s one of the most beautiful sights you’ll ever see, so take a few minutes to savor the moment and not end up wasting it taking pictures for Facebook, but really take in the scenery. The stunning sunset is worth seeing, and the Dubai desert provides the most picturesque colors!

Make new Friends

And by this, I mean both human, avian, feline, and everything in between. Make some new friends and carry the memory. A not-so-secret is , the more the merrier. Befriend the other safari companions/groups and share some laughs together!

Come for the Sand, but Stay for the Spectacle.

Every desert safari concludes with a spectacular show under the stars. With belly dancing, there are a few more items on the list. And it is the least to say that they are so captivating! The performers are from all over the world and make the ambiance very enjoyable.

Book a Great Deal in Dubai Desert Safari

Booking a Dubai Desert Safari is not that difficult. We at Explorer Tours have 10+ years of experience in the UAE and 40+ years of combined experience (Operations Team). Also offering pickup & drop-off service with all tours. The cherry on the cake is us being rewarded with the Travelers’ Choice Award in 2021. So now with these mellow details, you can trust us with your desert experience and we will put on the best show for you.

Lastly, manage your time wisely. Try to take part in all the entertaining activities like henna painting, traditional clothing, shisha smoking, and Arabic foods. And capture your outbound memories. Finally, do not forget to pay attention to the beauty of the desert. I spent a considerable amount of time reflecting on my seeming insignificance, the vastness and harshness of the desert and the joy of writing our names in the sand with my sister. This trip will definitely be one of the highlights of your Dubai Travel Diary!

Tips for traveling to Tanzania whilst pregnant

Planning a safari trip to Tanzania in pregnancy? Despair not, you can have a very safe and enjoyable trip simply by taking the necessary steps for precaution. Here is a short pregnant women’s guide for traveling to Tanzania.

Best Time to Travel

The best time to make a safari trip during pregnancy is in your second trimester. Second trimester is the most comfortable of all trimesters because you have crossed the morning-sickness phase and you haven’t yet entered a phase of extreme fatigue with a gigantic belly. It also carries the lowest risk of miscarriage and if you wait any longer, you might even feel like not going at all, thanks to the nesting instinct!

While many airlines let you travel up until your 36 th week of pregnancy, most will require a doctor’s note if you have hit the 28 th week. In any case, no matter how far along you are in your pregnancy, it is important that you be insured for early birth and medical care, should you require it.

Consult Your Doctor

Before making any reservations, make sure that you run your plans by the OBGYN. Doctors mostly consider traveling fine, but if you are taking a trip to Tanzania then it is best to get the green light from your doctor. They may also give you preventative medications that are safe to take during pregnancy.

Apart from consulting your doctor, you need to do some of your own homework as well. Before you fly, get the details of all the good hospitals that are located near your travel destination in Tanzania. Then make sure that you have traveler’s medical insurance that covers everything, including childbirth.

Length of Travel

The length of your travel depends heavily on how you are feeling. Obviously if you are traveling all the way to Tanzania, you cannot just spend a weekend there. Having said that, if you find yourself feeling more tired than usual or see some red flags, then it is probably best to not take a very long trip. If you are feeling healthy and adventurous then there is no reason to cut your trip short, but always be aware of the healthcare situation wherever you are vacationing.

Going to Tanzania means you will be mountain hiking. Hiking is actually an excellent cardiovascular exercise for soon-to-be moms and the amazing view does not hurt either. However, you can never be too safe during pregnancies, so make sure that you let your doctor know about your hiking plans. In addition, when hiking try to opt for even terrains so you can easily maintain your center of gravity. You also want to stay on the grid or have a hiking partner in case of a medical emergency. Lastly, take care of your health by drinking lots of fluids and healthy snacks.

If you are planning to hit the beach during your vacation then make sure that you protect yourself from the sun. Pregnancy hormones make your skin more sensitive under the sun, so wear lots of sunscreen and avoiding spending too much time under direct sunlight.

Medical advice is best.

I know we signed a waiver and a number of conditions, including pregnancies were mentioned...that tells you something.

I personally (not a doctor) would not recommend.

They can drive you to the camp location through a different route though to accommodate the rest of the activities.

I think it is not dangerous, but sometimes the car jumps, skids and goes up and down along steep slopes. So she could get scared and that feeling is not good for the baby.

Hi, we spent the time in a luxury toyota land cruiser and even though it was exciting riding over the dunes it was nowhere near as dramatic as the rides at Alton Towers!!!!

If you speak Arabic, Russian, German, Italian, French, Spanish or Portuguese, our talented team can help you at no additional cost. Please let us know at the time of booking so we can try to accommodate your request to the best of our ability.

We are happy to accommodate your food/dietary requirements. We have many vegetarian dishes so you will still have a variety of food to enjoy. Please inform us at the time of booking if you have any food allergies.

Many of our guests want to recognise the tremendous contribution our Conservation Guides make to their experience. However, there are no obligations to include a gratuity. If you do want to tip, the amount depends completely on you.

Platinum Heritage only operates with in-house vehicles and Conservation Guides. Therefore we have very limited availability and book out in advance. Once you have confirmed your travel plans, we strongly suggest that you book your desert safari before arriving to avoid disappointment. Our online booking system contains live inventory so you can see if seats are still available.

Desert safaris require a minimum number of guests to operate. Minimum guest numbers differ between experiences and are subject to change at any time. If a safari is cancelled due to minimum guest numbers not being reached, guests will be offered an alternate option or be provided with a full refund.

You already do! A portion of your fee is donated towards the conservation of the UAE desert. We provide support for a protected area that ensures the future of the region's desert habitats and bio-diversity. It is managed according to scientific ecological principles, aimed at protecting natural resources and maintaining original desert landscapes. Please let us know if you would like to make an additional contribution.

Alcohol is generally not permitted in the Arabic culture, and while the Rulers of the country have shown great flexibility in allowing service in hotels, we are committed to stay true to local traditions and showcase the authenticity, warmth and hospitality of this region. For these reasons we do not serve alcohol on our tours.

We hope that you agree and are happy to support us in our sustainability mission.

The weather in the Dubai desert is very different than in the city. During the day, loose-fitting clothing and shoes that you can easily remove (flip flops/sandals/thongs) are suggested. However, at night, please use the following as a guide:

May-October: Loose clothing, shorts, t-shirts, etc November-April: Dress in layers.

It can become quite cold in the desert as soon as the sun has set. Especially between December-February, the temperature can get less than ten degrees Celsius. Jeans, closed shoes, shirts, cardigans or even a jacket is required on cooler nights in the desert.

We are happy to pick you up from a private residence if you book a private car.

If you have shared transport, it could translate into a delay in the experience for yourself and other guests if the Conservation Guide needs to look for the house/villa. For the convenience of all guests, we have a central pick-up in each location. Our team will share the exact pick-up location and time with you before your experience.

Bedouins would build their camps on the top of sand dunes for many reasons; to catch any cool winds, to avoid low areas susceptible to flash floods, to keep watch on approaching tribes, and to avoid snakes and scorpions which prefer low lying brush. Platinum Heritage has constructed the industry's first camp sitting on top of a dune.

By doing this, we avoid creatures like scorpions, snakes etc., making a home in our camp. We also take advantage of the cool Dubai afternoon breeze, using nature's natural air-conditioning and pest control.

The only concern for our pregnant guests would be during the wildlife safari in our Land Rovers as it can be a little bumpy. It shouldn't be an issue if you are experiencing a healthy pregnancy, as it is only slightly bumpier than driving on a dirt road.

If you would still like to join the safari, you can skip the wildlife drive, and we can arrange for you to be dropped directly at the sunset stop for the falcon show, where you can wait for the other guests. This would be approximately a 1-hour wait, and besides missing out on the wildlife drive, you can still enjoy the full itinerary.

Our camp is located approximately halfway between the cities of Dubai and Al Ain. Dubai experiences a coastal weather system, usually associated with high winds and rain around 5-7 days per year. Al-Ain is at the base of a mountain range and is subject to higher concentrations of rainfall.

Since our camp is between the two weather systems, it does not usually enjoy rainfall as high as either centre. Due to this lack of rain, there are fewer trees and plants in the desert than in the cities. If you see a weather report for rain and storms in Dubai, quite often, the sun is shining with vivid blue skies at our camp. Please check with us before changing your plans. If the tour is not able to operate due to inclement weather, compensation will be offered.

As the first four-wheel-drive introduced in the UAE, our 1950s Land Rovers are collectors' items, and this is the only place in the world you can experience these vehicles driven in the desert. Most four-wheel drives (including modern ones) take a lot of maintenance to drive over the dunes every morning and night. When a vehicle is 70 years old, it takes daily monitoring and maintenance. Therefore, we have a full-time mechanic on hand to take preventative maintenance.

However, things happen, and vehicles do break down (even modern ones). We always have spare vehicles close by. This way, on the rare occasion of a breakdown, it only becomes part of the adventure and not something that spoils or delays the whole experience. If something does happen during the desert safari, enjoy the adventures as many generations before you have done.

As an ecotourism company, we focus on sustainable practices and conduct gentle wildlife drives in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve that doesn't include dune bashing. While dune bashing can be a fun experience, it has its downsides; it's typically not family-friendly, can feel rushed, and most importantly, the pristine Dubai desert has so much more to offer. With an expansive and rich culture, exotic wildlife, and some of the most breath-taking scenery in the world, the deserts of Dubai have a lot more charm that will leave you with lasting memories.

In addition, the desert ecosystem is very sensitive, and about 95% of the animals in the desert live under the sand. When you drive fast across dunes, you are damaging all the vegetation and wildlife. Dune bashing is not an innocent pastime; it's an adventure sport and should be limited to certain areas since it does a lot of damage. For more details, please visit the sustainability section on our website.

Numerous factors make it difficult for us to provide an exact pick-up time at the time of booking. However, you will have a 1-hour range to help you plan your day. We never want our guests to wait. Therefore, we try to give a precise pick-up time on the day of your safari. We will call you in your hotel room first. However, if you are not in the room, we will:

- Leave a message with the Concierge - Send you a confirmation email - If you are not in the room and didn't provide us with an email address, we will phone or leave a text message on the international number you provided - If you have not received a message by 01:00 PM on the day of your tour, please phone +971 4 4409827

We created two unique desert safari collections with very different concepts.

Our Platinum Collection was designed for our discerning guests who are accustomed to the finer things in life. Luxurious Land Rover Defenders, fine-dining around an oasis inside a royal property, falconry and access to the Conservation Reserve. Away from the crowds, the Platinum Collection ensures privacy and exclusivity.

Our Heritage Collection showcases Dubai’s culture and heritage, authentic Arabic cuisine, entertainment and local traditions. The Heritage Collection has been designed to engage our guests in UAE history. Our guests will have a chance to participate in various activities, bringing history to life.

If you will be travelling with a child below 5 years old, a private car is required for various reasons:

- The drive will be toned down to accommodate a younger child, this might change the nature drive experience for other guests. - Car seats are strictly required for young kids, eliminating the chance of seat rotation for everyone to enjoy the splendid desert views. - Young children often get scared, cry, sick etc. Having a private vehicle will allow you the flexibility to shorten the drive better to suit your family's needs.

Just contact the provider and tell them that you just want to go ahead to the camp whilst your husband will do the dune bashing.

is desert safari safe for pregnancy

If you ask me the only reason to go on a standard desert safari is the dune bashing. The camps of even the most respected companies, like Arabian Adventures, aren't the most luxurious. If you like BBQ and belly dancing then you may think differently.

I'd instead have a look at these guys http://platinum-heritage.com/ who offer a more gentrified and authentic experience without the thrills of the dune bashing.

Platinum Heritage provide a far more upmarket experience without the dune bashing.

I disagree with SwissLe, whilst dune bashing is a major part of the standard safari I think you could still enjoy a without doing the dune bashing part, especially if your husband really wants to do it so PH wouldn't suit. I would make sure you go with a reputable company though (search this forum) to make sure they are able to accommodate your request to go straight to the camp.

Survival Guide: What to Pack for a Dubai Desert Safari

December 19, 2023 By Cher Leave a Comment

is desert safari safe for pregnancy

Getting ready for a desert safari is fun, but being ready is super important. In this short guide, we easily explain the must-haves. We’ll help you pack smartly for the very hot desert weather. Find out what you need for a comfy and enjoyable time in the Arabian sun. Whether you’re going for the first time or you’re a desert pro, our guide is your ticket to a great Dubai desert safari. Let’s make sure your trip to the dunes is something you’ll always remember.

Light Clothes: Stay Cool in the Heat

When getting ready for a Dubai Desert Safari, picking the right clothes is super important. Wear loose, long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect from the sun while letting air in. A broad hat adds extra protection for your face and neck. And don’t forget comfy closed-toe shoes for walking on the desert ground. Picking the right clothes means you can enjoy the adventure without feeling too heavy or too hot. If you want to make your desert experience even more memorable, you can also book a night stay in Dubai Desert and sleep under the stars in a luxurious tent.

Sun Guard: Protect Yourself from the Sun

In the desert sun, protecting yourself is a must. Bring high SPF sunscreen to shield your skin. Use lip balm with sunblock too. Sunglasses with UV protection not only keep your eyes safe but also make things more comfortable in the bright light. Consider a light scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders during the sunniest hours. With these sun-smart essentials, you’ll be ready to enjoy the beautiful desert without worrying about sunburn or discomfort.

Stay Hydrated: Keep Cool in the Desert

The desert is dry and hot, so staying hydrated is super important. Think about using a hydration backpack for hands-free convenience. Drinks with electrolytes can help replace minerals lost through sweating. Staying hydrated stops dehydration in the dry environment. Drink water regularly, especially during breaks. By keeping hydrated, you’ll have energy, stay alert, and fully enjoy the Dubai Desert Safari.

Good Shoes: Comfort for Desert Walks

Walking in the desert needs the right shoes. Choose comfy, closed-toe shoes with a strong sole to protect your feet from hot sand and rocks.

Open shoes like sandals might seem good, but they don’t cover and protect your feet from the weather. Pick shoes that give support and stability, making your journey through the desert more enjoyable and safer. Whether you’re on the dunes or exploring a desert camp, the right shoes give you comfort and safety.

Useful Extras: Hats, Sunglasses, and More

Practical extras make your desert safari better. A wide hat doesn’t just look nice; it also keeps your face and neck safe from the sun.

Quality sunglasses with UV protection cut glare and keep your eyes safe. Think about a light scarf or shawl for extra sun coverage. And a small backpack is handy to carry your stuff, keeping your hands free. These practical extras add usefulness and comfort to your desert adventure.

Snack Time: Good Food for the Safari

Eating the right snacks is crucial for a good desert safari. Pack light and non-perishable snacks like nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars. These quick snacks provide energy without making you feel heavy. Check that your snacks can handle the desert heat to stay fresh. Having different snacks keeps you energized all day, so you enjoy the adventure without getting slowed down by hunger.

Take Pictures: Capture the Desert Moments

Taking photos on your Dubai Desert Safari is a must, so having a camera is important. Bring a small, tough camera to capture the amazing landscapes and special moments.

Ensure your camera has lots of battery, and carry extra memory cards so you don’t miss taking any pictures. A camera with zoom can get close-ups of desert plants and animals. With your camera, you’ll remember the beauty of the desert long after your safari is done.

Walking on Sand: Best Footwear Choices

Moving on sandy dunes needs the right footwear. Select shoes that cover your feet to prevent sand from entering and causing discomfort. Light hiking boots or athletic shoes with a closed-toe work great.

The closed design not only protects your feet but also gives stability on uneven ground. Avoid open-toe shoes or sandals since they can be uncomfortable and make it hard to walk on the sandy landscape. Choosing the right footwear makes your time in the desert sands more enjoyable and easier.

First Aid Basics: Handling Common Desert Issues

A prepared desert adventurer has basic first aid stuff. Pack a small kit with things like bandages, wipes, and pain relievers. Sunburn cream and blister pads help with issues in the desert.

Being ready with first aid means you can fix small problems fast, so you can focus on the safari fun instead of discomfort. While the desert is amazing, it’s smart to be ready for unexpected situations with a small and useful first aid kit.

Night in the Desert: What to Bring for Camping and Relaxing

As the sun sets and the desert gets cooler, getting ready for the night is important. Pack a light jacket or shawl to stay warm when it’s cooler. A small flashlight is good for moving around the campsite or exploring after dark.

Think about bringing a portable phone charger to keep your devices charged. If you plan to camp, a light sleeping bag and travel pillow add comfort to your night in the desert. Packing thoughtfully for the night means you’ll have a cozy and enjoyable evening under the starry skies of the Dubai desert.

Things to do in Dubai

Dubai Desert Safari Tours: An All-In-One List

desert safari tour dubai

Dubai is a multicultural city with unique topography. Sandy deserts and salt plains highlight the city’s landscape. That’s why no trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) would be complete without a desert safari adventure in Dubai. It’s one of the few adventures in the city that offers all modern and traditional Arabic experiences.

If you plan to set foot in one of Dubai’s scenic deserts, here’s everything you need to know before you book your first desert safari adventure.

Things to Know Before You Book Your First Desert Safari Tour in Dubai

You need to know a couple of things before you prepare for and book your first desert safari tour. This general information will help you understand what to expect in an outdoor adventure such as this.

What Is a Desert Safari Tour?

Desert safari tours offer day-long trips to Dubai’s accessible deserts. These challenging yet enjoyable tours are made possible with off-road vehicles, which can overcome any obstacle and cross any dunes. Travel and tour companies in Dubai offer tours with registered 4×4 vehicles—Jeep, Hummer, Land Rover, and Land Cruiser, to name a few.

Aside from the actual desert journey, a desert safari tour is packed with loads of adrenaline-pumping activities. Each tour may include popular activities like dune bashing, camel riding, quad biking, sandboarding, and camping.

Who Can Join Desert Safari Tours?

While Dubai’s desert safari tours may appeal to all age groups, some activities have age and health restrictions. There are typically no age restrictions for desert road trips in 4×4 vehicles, camping adventures, desert dinners, and other static activities. For moderate to extreme activities, refer to the list below to view the restrictions:

Dune Bashing

 dune bashing uae

Recommended for travelers ages three and up. Parents or guardians are required to accompany children below ten years old. Dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women and visitors with heart conditions and severe physical injuries.

Sandboarding

sandboarding dubai

Children below three years old are usually not allowed to partake in this activity but note that sandboarding is a safe sport.

Camel Riding

camel riding dubai.

Safe and for travelers ages three and up. Toddlers, however, should not ride alone. Camel riding is not recommended for pregnant travelers and those with chronic back pain and vertigo.

Quad Biking

dune buggy offers dubai

Some quad biking activities are extreme, so it is only recommended to travelers ages 10 to 50. Toddlers can share bikes with their parents or guardians if the operator is okay with it. Quad biking is not recommended for pregnant women and travelers with severe physical injuries, neck or back pain, and heart problems.

Despite these restrictions, pregnant women and travelers with physical disabilities need not worry about not enjoying desert safari tours. Travel and tour companies offer relaxed and wheel-chair accessible desert safari tours with road trips, dinner, and entertainment.

Do Desert Safari Activities Require Certain Skills?

Desert safari tours in Dubai with 4×4 road trips, traditional Arabic entertainment, wildlife safari adventures, and other static activities are open to all ages and, of course, require no physical skills and expertise. Travel and tour companies have drivers and tour guides to accompany travelers for these activities, so they are best for relaxed couples and families.

Camel riding, quad biking, and sandboarding are best for travelers who enjoy low-octane adventures. Sandboarding and quad biking are relatively easy as long as beginners have the proper equipment and know the basic instructions.

Adrenaline-pumping activities like dune bashing are not for the faint-hearted, but they’re usually the most sought-after. Dune bashing is intense motorsport with skilled drivers. It requires no skills, but you need to be mentally and physically prepared to try it.

Are Desert Safari Tours Safe and Regulated?

Desert safari tours offered by reputable travel and tour agencies are safe and regulated. Even low-octane and extreme activities are regulated. To ensure a hassle-free experience, only book and transact with reputable agencies with permits and good reviews.

COVID-19 Considerations

All travel and tour companies in Dubai follow special health and safety measures to combat COVID-19. Desert safari tour operators in Dubai are required by the World Health Organization (WHO) and local authorities to ensure social distancing among guests, regularly sanitize vehicles and equipment, conduct temperature checks for staff and guests, and promote contactless payments. They may limit the number of passengers on some desert safari activities, depending on the local protocols.

Tourists, too, are required to follow individual safety protocols. Guests should wear face masks during the activity, avoid physical contact among staff and other guests, and submit basic personal information for contact tracing purposes.

When Is the Best Time to Book a Desert Safari Tour in Dubai?

The best time to experience a desert safari adventure in Dubai is during the winter months, typically between October to May. Summer months work, too, as long as there’s little to no rain in the area. Dubai has year-round sunshine and warm temperatures with very little rainfall. There’s plenty of time for travelers to plan and prepare their accommodations and itineraries before booking a tour with this range.

Desert safari tours are an all-day activity. There are morning, afternoon, and evening tour packages. Travel and tour companies also offer half-day tours for tourists who only have limited time.

How Long Does a Desert Safari Tour Take?

On average, travel companies offer a two-hour tour package. This package may already include the 4×4 road trip and other additional activities. Premium tour packages, however, may take four to eight hours. Whole-day tours from morning to evening come with a jam-packed itinerary covering all standard and premium activities.

What Are the Best Locations for Desert Safari Tours?

Most travel companies host activities at Al Awir, Lahbab (also known as Lehbab), Al Khayma, and the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. The majority of these locations are villages and communities on the outskirts of Dubai—easily accessible by tourists and travel companies.

When choosing a location, consider the group you’re bringing and the available activities in the desert. Here are some of the things you can expect from the sites mentioned above for reference:

Al Awir Desert Safari

al awir desert dune buggying

Al Awir is 35 kilometers away from the city. It’s a community known for its rich agricultural resources and camel breeding farms. Desert safari tours in Al Awir offer some of the best dune bashing activities in Dubai.

Lahbab Red Dunes Desert Safari

Lahbab is a small village 50 kilometers south of Dubai. The main local activity in the area is camel breeding and raising. Lahbab houses some of the most extensive camel race tracks in Dubai.

Al Khayma Camp Desert Safari

The Bedouin-inspired Al Khayma Camp is one hour away from Dubai. Since it’s located outside the city, Al Khayma offers the perfect ambiance to immerse yourself in authentic Arabian culture. The desert provides some of the best traditional food, activities, and entertainment in the UAE.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) Safari

dubai conservation reserve

Dubai is known for its luxury mega-projects, but little is known about its conservation campaigns and movements. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is one of the largest areas with protected nature reserves in Dubai and the world. It’s located on the outskirts of Sharjah, taking up 5% of Dubai’s total landmass.

Preparation Tips And Booking Procedures

Now that you know what desert safari tours are all about and why you should never leave Dubai without setting foot in a sand dune, let’s proceed to the actual preparations and procedures involved in booking the activity.

How to Get to the Best Desert Safari Camps

Dubai safari tours mostly come with pick-up and drop-off services. But if you prefer mini and half-day tours with no transportation service, you can reach any safari in the city by car, bus, or the metro.

Car rental companies offer daily, weekly, and monthly car hire packages. Affordable daily rates range from 30 AED to 50 AED, depending on the car’s size. From the city’s heart, public transportation options like buses and the metro cost 10 AED and up. The average travel time from the city center to any of the best safari destinations in Dubai is between 25 minutes to an hour.

What Are the Things Travelers Need to Prepare?

Travelers are expected to wear comfortable clothing and footwear that can withstand hot afternoons and cold evenings. Men can opt for loose-fitting t-shirts and pants. Some locations may require women to cover their shoulders and knees, so always bring comfortable pullovers or jackets. Travelers may wear comfortable sneakers, boots, and flip-flops, depending on the destination and activity.

The sun is always bright and strong in the morning, so it’s best to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and light shawls. These extra accessories and skincare products can ease discomfort while traveling.

If you have heavy belongings, make sure to bring small to medium-sized bags that you can conveniently carry everywhere. Travel and tour companies provide storage locations at their camps, but you’ll surely need your camera, smartphone, wallet, and other valuables with you.

Do Travelers Need to Book Prebook?

Dubai only allows registered travel and tour companies to conduct desert safari tours. So, yes, pre-booking is a must. Give the operator ample time to prepare the tour and activities based on your preferences. Also, give yourself time to come up with itineraries and organize your tour essentials.

For whole-day or long tours, book at least three days before the activity. For mini and half-day tours, book at least one day in advance. When in a rush, look for travel companies that accept walk-in tourists.

Where to Book a Desert Safari Tour in Dubai

desert safari camp dubai

A desert safari tour is undoubtedly the most popular tourist activity in Dubai, so the competition is tight among travel and tour companies. For this reason, it’s difficult for travelers and tourists, especially first-timers, to pick the best desert safari tour in Dubai.

The selection process would be much easier if you’ll carefully research and consider the travel company’s reputation, location, price offer, and list of activities. To help narrow down your options, here are some of the most recommended desert safari tour operators in Dubai and their existing tour packages :

  • OceanAir Travels – 250 AED (68 USD) to 444 AED (121 USD); Half-day to two-day tours with popular activities like quad biking, camel trekking, sandboarding, henna painting, or dune bashing.
  • Go Dubai Desert Safari – 60 AED (16.34 USD) to 250 AED (68 USD) per person; 4-hour and two-day tours with popular activities like quad biking, camel riding, horse riding, dune bashing, sandboarding, henna painting, falcon shows, and fire shows.
  • Happy Trip Tours – 15 AED (4 USD) to 451 AED (122 USD) per activity and customizable tour; Half-day to overnight safari tours with popular activities like quad biking, dune bashing, henna painting, camel riding, and falcon shows.
  • Platinum Heritage – 525 AED ( 143 USD) to 2,200 AED (599 USD); Half-day, private, and overnight safari tours with premium activities like activities Bedouin falcon and Saluki dogs shows, camel riding, and astronomy sessions.
  • Arabian Adventures – 114 AED (31 USD) to 720 AED (196 USD); 4-hour and overnight tours with popular activities like sandboarding, camel riding, henna painting, and wildlife sighting.

The majority of these Dubai desert safari ticket prices and packages already include hotel pick-up and drop-off services, in-house or freelance tour guides, and complimentary meals and drinks. Operators usually offer regional BBQ dinners and unlimited adult beverages. Still, if you want to explore more traditional cuisines and signature food in the area, there are booths, bars, and restaurants in the desert.

You can book a desert safari tour online or via phone call. Travel and tour companies have reputable websites with contact details and booking forms. Alternatively, you can visit their physical locations if they’re near your area to inquire about desert safari tour prices in Dubai and book a package right away.

Final Desert Safari Tour Tips for First-Timers

Desert safari tours are enjoyable activities, but they’re usually long and tiring. On that account, you need to evaluate your options and decisions before booking a tour. Book tours and activities based on your budget, tolerance level, health condition, and other personal factors. If you want nothing but the best adventure in Dubai, keep our guide and tips in mind as you plan your trip.

What to Do After a Desert Safari Adventure in Dubai

In just one desert safari tour, you’ll be reminded why Dubai has become one of the famous cities in the world. But while riding a 4×4 vehicle in a scenic desert is fun on its own, don’t miss the chance to try extreme and unique activities that are unique in the area.

Camel riding, dune buggying, and sandboarding are just some of the most popular activities in most desert safari tour packages in Dubai. But if you have more time and budget, try fat biking and dirt biking, hop on a hot air balloon ride, discover heritage villages, and encounter wildlife.
