Ways To Decorate A Coquette Aesthetic Room

pink bedroom with bed and chairs

These days, fashion trends come and go in the blink of an eye. One trend that has gained notoriety within the past year is the coquette aesthetic. According to  Grazia , a coquette is a flirtatious young woman who enjoys all things feminine and romantic. While some criticize this aesthetic for fetishizing youth and sexuality, it arguably promotes a sense of self-love and positivity.

The coquette aesthetic focuses on feminine clothing such as pleated skirts, Mary Jane shoes, frilly white socks, lacework, and delicately colored tops. The trend also focuses on dewy, natural-looking makeup and dainty jewelry such as thin silver chains and pearl necklaces. Retro vibes and pastel colors are also features of this trend. The coquette aesthetic is rooted in fashion, but it can also inspire your home decor to stunning effect. You can embrace the coquette style by filling your living space with romantic decor . Creating a coquette room is uncomplicated and can be achieved by following these decorating tips and tricks.

Add a touch of pink

An essential element of the coquette aesthetic is pink in clothing, accessories, and room decor. Pink is typically favored by those who prefer delicate shades of color. If you want to add pink to your bedroom without it looking childish, avoid primary or pastel colors. Go for a sweet shade of millennial pink or a rosy blush. Subtle shades of blue, gray, or green wall paint or wallpaper will tone down a pink room. Neutral paints and furniture also help balance out bright shades of pink. According to  SeniorCare2Share , another way to add mature elements to a pink room is by incorporating houseplants and artwork.

Another way to add dimension to a pink room is to cut down on your pink accessories. Rugs and wastebaskets don't need to be pink if it's already the statement color on the bedroom walls. When it comes to bedding, choose a different shade of pink than the walls, or go for another color entirely. Mint green or buttercream yellow bed sheets and pillowcases are soft colors that will contrast and complement pink tones. One can never go wrong with tan or beige bedroom sheets or blankets (via  Kelly Nan ).

Floral prints galore

When it comes to coquette fashion, floral prints are essential. Floral prints are everywhere, especially on tennis skirts or lace camisoles. Usually, small flower prints or rose prints are on casual dresses or room designs. With springtime in full effect, floral prints are budding all over. According to  Furniture in Fashion , it's good to choose a wall paint color before creating any floral designs along the walls in a bedroom. Popular choices are bright reds, blues, or greens. Stencil stems or leaves into the floral wall designs to create a realistic floral look.

However, you don't have to change your wall color or wallpaper to add floral prints to your room. Toss decorative floral pillows onto a simple bedspread or craft a string of real or faux flowers to place on the bedpost. From tulips to peonies, the range of flowers to use is endless. A straightforward way to add floral motifs would be to hand-paint flowers on a canvas, wait for it to dry, get a frame, and hang the painting on a wall (via  Digs Digs ).

Find eco-friendly candles

There's nothing better than sweet-smelling candle scents . Candles come in all scents, from floral to fruity to spicy. Content creators into the coquette aesthetic on YouTube and TikTok often do room tours showing off their favorite candles. Coquettes favor white and pink candles from popular places like Yankee Candle. When purchasing your candles, pay attention to aesthetics and sustainability. According to  Country & Town House , several candle wax varieties are safe for the environment. Beeswax is a wax that burns slowly and is biodegradable but isn't 100 percent vegan. Another popular candle wax is soy since it's natural, biodegradable, and renewable. Be careful of candles that contain fake fragrances like paraffin because they can contain phthalates which cause irritation and illness in the lungs and heart if overexposure occurs.

Candle safety is an essential topic to keep in mind (via  Today ). Most importantly, children and pets should stay away from open flames and be accompanied by a trusted adult when near lit candles. Place your candles on a sturdy table that won't wobble or topple over easily. To prevent wax spillage, set candles inside holders or a small dish. Extinguish candles before throwing them away.

Get a blast from the past with vintage photographs

Who doesn't love displaying photographs of their loved ones in the home? As with most interior design styles, part of the coquette design is to feature framed photos on desks or bedroom walls. However, a unique aspect of coquette style is to use frames from antique or secondhand shops. These places often sell older furniture or historical photographs of people from the past. According to  LoveToKnow , early American frames were handmade of wood with simple details etched onto the surface. Victorian frames feature wood covered with plaster material and intricate designs. Older pieces may appear warped and out of shape, so finding one in good condition at an antique store may be challenging. However, it's worth the search.

If you're looking for vintage photographs from a specific era, the internet is the best way to search (via  Stock Photo Secrets ). Be careful of using copyrighted material because not all photographs are in the public domain. If unsure, it's best to check with a webmaster to get permission to use photos.

Learn the difference between a wardrobe and a dresser

Clothes are a big part of the coquette aesthetic. The style embodies feminine yet classic silhouettes that harken back to when dressing up was more popular. Coquettes favor pleated skirts, collared shirts, knee highs, stockings, and cardigans. How can these clothing items be stored to enable space, order, and wrinkle-free style? According to  Craftivity Designs , wardrobes and dressers offer distinct advantages and style options.

Wardrobes and dressers both serve a unique purpose. Dressers feature regular drawers that pull out to fit folded clothes inside. On the other hand, wardrobes have more compartments and open to provide hanger space for hanging delicate fabrics. It's easier to see what's inside, so you won't need to rummage and make messes to find the piece you need. Since many older homes do not have walk-in closet space, adding a wardrobe may be the best choice for storing clothes.

Install a vanity

Makeup in shades of pink and red is a big part of the coquette aesthetic. Adding a dash of pink blush to your cheeks or a coat of red lipstick will instantly make you coquette-ready. The style usually features simple eye looks with neutral-colored eyeshadow and dewy skin. If you want to create the perfect makeup station in your home, install a vanity. According to  Foter , there are a few things to consider before buying a vanity. The location makes a difference. Most people prefer to put vanities inside their bedroom close to clothes and other accessories. You could also place a vanity in the bathroom if there is enough space. However, this placement may be problematic for people living in a large household and sharing a bathroom.

A unique vanity feature is the lightbulbs that adorn the outer surface. These are usually LED lights but come in many styles and materials. There are vanities without installed lights that have mirrors. Some vanities come with adjustable mirrors, while others do not. Before purchasing a vanity, ensure it's durable, long-lasting, and easy to clean for continuous use down the line.

Decorate with dainty dishes and trays

With an abundance of jewelry and makeup, it may be hard to know how to display accessories attractively inside your bedroom. Instead of having everything strewn over desks and dressers, coquettes usually place their silver rings and delicate pearl necklaces on antique porcelain dishes or vintage trays. These dishes and trays have a retro appearance that looks classic and clean in any room.

According to  Elegant Findings Antiques , it's best to do research before purchasing porcelain. Make sure the item is not broken and doesn't have too many imperfections. Minor scratches and scrapes on porcelain can be a sign of character, but broken porcelain loses its value and function. Rare designs may be more valuable over time. Finding a seller who knows reputable and in-demand porcelain companies will also help you find the right piece. Shopping online or visiting flea markets are good ways to discover porcelain and vintage decor .

Buy antique furniture

Since the coquette aesthetic borrows from earlier decades, including the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, vintage furniture is a staple when decorating a coquette-themed bedroom. Vintage furniture is typically wood with elaborate etchings and designs on the surface. You can combine antique pieces from the Victorian era with modern furniture to create a unique bedroom style. Finding a vintage-style bed is the beginning of an old spin on a fresh aesthetic.

According to  Antique Marks , you should not make a big purchase unless you know where to place it in your home. Don't buy Victorian decor or vintage pieces just because they look old. In the long run, quality matters more than appearance. Something rare yet beautiful will be more meaningful than buying something for its age. Make sure the furniture is in good condition with minor damage before buying. It's always worth it to ask for a discount, whether you are shopping at a store or buying at an auction.

Store and take care of books

Few things melt away worries like opening up a good book. Part of the coquette aesthetic is book collecting. Since this style focuses on feminine details, collecting books that feature feminist themes and displaying them will help transform your home into a coquette paradise. According to  Harpers Bazaar , there are plenty of books with empowering female topics for your book collection, including titles by Virginia Wolf and Sylvia Plath. Contemporary novels such as "Bad Feminist" by Roxane Gay are also on the list. These books are a perfect addition to any coquette book collection.

With books, it's best to store them upright in a bookshelf or bookcase (via Martha Stewart ). Do not place them in direct sunlight near open windows. Too much light can lead to page discoloration and other deformations. Storing books in a dank attic or musty garage could also cause damage due to moisture in the room. If you have books damaged beyond repair, you may need to electronically digitalize them into an e-edition rather than a paper copy.

Display stuffed animals

Have a favorite stuffed teddy bear or rabbit lying around? Stuffed animals are an essential element of the coquette aesthetic, and these cute soft toys provide comfort and serenity in our fast-paced world. Children and adults may hold on to them for sentimental value. If you want to store your stuffed animals properly in your home, there are tips to keep in mind. According to  Capital City Bins , stuffed animals can be vacuum-packed in plastic bags to cut down on space. These toys can also be placed in plastic tubs and stowed away in closets.

A simple way to decorate with stuffed animals within a bedroom is to place them around your bedding and pillows (via  Off the Record Mom ). Find white vintage or retro-designed storage cubby holes to house your stuffed animals for a coquette vibe. Wicker baskets in pale shades of pink or purple are an attractive place to store your stuffed animals.

Show off your perfume bottles

Embrace the coquette aesthetic in your bedroom or bathroom by displaying sweet floral perfumes. Dior is a must-have perfume for coquettes to wear, but all different brands and designers work for this tip. If you have almost empty perfume bottles, you can use them for unique crafts. According to  The Beauty Store , one way to use empty perfume bottles is to add water and place flowers inside. Want to add color? Pour water into empty perfume bottles and add some drops of food coloring. Place the top back on the perfume bottle and arrange the bottles on a tray or vanity. You could also create a new perfume scent by adding some essential oils to a carrier oil (via Byrdie ).

Want other creative ways to use empty perfume bottles? For those long summer nights, fill an empty bottle with insect repellent. This tip will combat mosquitoes and other annoying bugs during outside activities (via  Turning the Clock Back ). Empty perfume bottles can be recycled regularly or given to friends or family members who'd like to make their own crafts with them.

Freshen up with fruit flavor

Coquette fashion often incorporates cherry and strawberry prints for an effortless and fun style. You can also include fruit prints in your interior design for a sweet twist. According to  Designbx , there are tons of fruit-inspired furnishings and accessories for your bedroom. For example, you can buy bed sheets or pillowcases with cherry or strawberry prints. There's also fruit-themed wall art, wallpaper, and furnishings like chairs and couches. Look for decorations with bright colors and soft fabrics.

As far as other bedroom designs go, you can buy plastic or plaster fruit from craft and hobby stores and use it to decorate vintage trays for a retro motif. A cute way to add feminine touches is to find fake strawberry tarts and place them with plastic grapes on a tray to mimic a teatime setting. This unique idea will make your space satisfy any sweet tooth.

Dazzle with string lights

Want to add a soft, glittery vibe to any room? Hang up some sparkling twinkle lights. Light decorating doesn't have to be just for the holiday season. According to  We Be Christmas , you can integrate lights into your interior design all year long. Fairy lights are growing in popularity for bedroom designs. Children interested in fantasy worlds may enjoy fairy lights and other fantastical motifs in their rooms.

There are many unique ways to decorate with string lights in a bedroom (via  DIYs ). Hanging stringed lights over a headboard or along a bed's canopy can create a calm and whimsical vibe. Likewise, stringing lights into a heart shape adds a sweet look without going overboard. Lights with faux flowers and garlands are also a popular choice for adding a pop of greenery. It's possible to create a flower string light look by twining real flowers into regular strands of lights.

Embrace romantic elements

Coquettes love romance and anything involving love. Therefore, red heart-shaped sunglasses, pink lipstick prints, pearl necklaces, and hearts complete the coquette look. Why not design a bedroom based on love by embracing romantic decor? According to  Home Edit , you can put flowers on a desk to liven up the workspace. Sweet-smelling roses freshen up any environment. Another way to incorporate romantic elements is to hang chic fashion photographs with golden frames on bedroom walls.

Do you like ruffled designs? Add ruffled accent pillows or blankets with pom-poms onto a bed. Use red and pink paints to stencil heart and floral creations to create a sweet headboard. Furniture with soft curves instead of straight lines can look more delicate and feminine (via  Matter Brothers Furniture & Mattress ). Another good rule of thumb is to steer away from stripes or plaids and look for fashions with polka dots and florals.

Christmas front porch with greenery and red decorations - Home Tours 2023

Before we begin, I want to thank Ann Marie and Ann of Simply 2 Moms for stepping in to host.   They were kind enough to help out Marty from A Stroll Thru Life who organized this annual blog hop.

If you are arriving here from Our Southern Home – Welcome!  Christy always does an amazing job with her holiday decor so I’m sure you enjoyed her tour! When you’re finished here, please be sure to visit the links at the end of this post to see all the beautiful Christmas home tours!

Welcome to my home!

A cozy christmas home tour with classic decorating ideas….

Normally, I’d start at the front door but I’m not done with that area yet.  Today, we’ll start in the hallway leading to the kitchen.

Just the other day, I had the bright idea to hang classic black and white family photos on this wall.  Previously, I had a floral wall hanging in this spot…which didn’t feel ‘Christmasy’ at all!  So, I spent more time than I should have measuring to get the frames straight.  Luckily, I didn’t make too many mistakes!

Anyway, these black frames ended up coordinating well with some of my family room Christmas decor.  Before I show you that room, let’s head into my Christmas kitchen.

Cozy Christmas Home Tour – The Kitchen:

Classic red for the holiday season….

When you step into my kitchen, the first thing you notice is the red checked curtain panels framing the sliding glass door.  Normally, I have blue and white curtains in this spot but it’s been awhile since I’ve used the red for Christmas.  So I thought, why not?

To dress up my chandelier, I added some faux greenery.  Years ago, I would attempt to use fresh evergreen stems but the needles would fall on the table and my hands would get sticky from the sap.  After going with artificial greenery, I haven’t looked back!

Throughout my kitchen, I added more faux greenery such as the garland over the window and the mini wreaths hung on the cabinet doors.

This year, I also filled a basket with artificial greenery to serve as the focal point on my stove mantel.

When I found the plaid ribbon, I knew it would be perfect for the basket.  In fact, I was going to change the ribbon on the mini wreaths to smaller matching plaid ribbon but my order didn’t arrive in time.  Oh well, I still like the red snowflake ribbon I ended up reusing from  last year’s tour.

Basket of greenery with plaid bow

To dress up my candles, I wrapped each one with the same plaid ribbon.  If you want an easy and inexpensive way to coordinate your accessories, add some pretty ribbon!

White stove mantel decorated with basket of greenery

Even though my original plan involved using red, green and white from the plaid ribbon, I decided to add some black with my buffalo check rug. This Christmas, I decorated mostly with items I already owned.  After all, I practically have a million Christmas bins in my basement, why keep buying more decorations?!

White kitchen with wreaths on cabinet doors

For my window area, I just kept it simple with a garland.  As I do some tweaking, I might hang some decorations in that spot  like I’ve done in previous years. Or, maybe I’ll add some bows which seem to be really popular this year.

In the back corner of my counter, I decorated a little vignette with classic red and green for Christmas.

Merry Christmas sign and decorations on countertop

On my window sill, I displayed a group of small white ceramic houses.  If you read my blog, you know I love decorating with these little houses at Christmastime.  To see some of my ideas, read –  White Ceramic Christmas Houses (Why We Love Them).

White ceramic houses on windowsill

Some of these little houses have lights in them so they look really pretty at night when the lights are dim.  For some other ways to decorate a windowsill, read  Easy Kitchen Window Sill Decorating Ideas for Every Season.

Across the kitchen, I kept my decorating very simple.  Maybe I’ll still add some greenery to the pitchers on the shelf but I don’t want to overdo it.

Wall of white cabinets and stainless refrigerator

Usually, I keep a round tray on my island and change the decor with every season.  Not only does it make a nice focal point but using a tray is convenient if you have to make room to serve food.  For more Christmas countertop tray ideas read –  Kitchen Island Tray Decor (a Cozy Winter Theme).

White nutcracker, hurricane candle, galvanized metal house and white bird on rustic wooden tray - cozy Christmas home tour

Once again, I stayed with classic Christmas colors along with a white skiing nutcracker for our family of skiers.  In the glass hurricane, I made use of my extra cranberries from Thanksgiving.  For more ways to use leftover cranberries,  read my simple ideas including some cute Christmas luminiaries.

In my glass cabinets, I displayed a few more Christmas plates along with all my glassware for entertaining.

And I created another simple vignette on my glass tray.  Once again, some greenery in a white pitcher…one of my go-to decor ideas.

Speaking of white pitchers, here are a few more on my console table between the kitchen and family room.  Each season, I also do simple updates like color coordinating my napkins and stack of cookbooks.

Besides the white pitchers, baskets and trays are more decorating staples in my home.

Cozy Christmas Home Tour – The Family Room:

Holiday decor inspired by red…and black.

After adding my red and white buffalo check curtains in the kitchen, I felt like the family room needed equally bold colors.  Luckily, I still had my black and red pillow covers in my stash so I brought them out.

Family room with plantation shutters and stone fireplace - cozy Christmas home tour

And since I was adding red and black, I went with a simple mantel using a mirror and fabric star.  Sometimes it’s hard to decorate a stone fireplace so I usually end up leaning the decorations.

Stone fireplace decorated with black mirror and red star - cozy Christmas home tour

If you’ve toured my house at Christmas before, you know that star  usually makes an appearance somewhere!

Of course, if this were truly a “cozy Christmas home tour”, I would have a fire going in the fireplace!  Since my husband just mentioned that we need to have the chimney sweep guy come and clean it out, I’ll wait on that fire for now!

stone fireplace decorated with black mirror, red star and garland

This year, I didn’t hang my stockings yet.  Overall, I like the simplicity of the mantel for now.  Also, I’ve be been using battery operated fairy lights on my mantel and they are a game changer!  After years of struggling with extension cords, these things are so much easier!

As we head back to the foyer, you can see another decorating item from last year – my red snowflake pillow.  Like I said, I try to reuse as much as I can over the years.  For instance, in the background you can also see our old Santa advent calendar hanging on the wall.  Even though my kids are older, they still like me to put that up every year!  Ahhh…childhood memories!

Cozy Christmas Home Tour – A Dining Room Peek:

Navy blue with touches of red….

As I mentioned, I just started decorating my dining room so here’s a peek of my tree in there!

St. cloud house vies for ugliest house in america.

Having an ugly house can be a good thing — if the prize is a dream renovation from a celebrity designer.

That's the incentive for homeowners who nominate their homes to be on HGTV's "Ugliest House in America." And when Season 5 rolls out on Monday, a Minnesota home will be a contender for most hideous house.

According to the network, a St. Cloud abode will be one of 15 houses featured in the lighthearted series that's all about fun and problem-solving rather than poking fun. Saddled with a home that has a nonsensical layout or outlandish decor, homeowners nominate their places because they don't know where to begin and are seeking design help from the pros.

In each episode, the host — comedian/actress Retta (NBC's "Parks and Rec" and "Good Girls") — takes viewers inside the homes of three finalists in a region (Midwest, Pacific Northwest, Southwest, Northern and Northeast). Ultimately, one of the homes will be crowned the Ugliest House in America and receive a $150,000 dream renovation from HGTV's Alison Victoria unveiled in a finale episode.

Season 5 begins Monday. Minnesota falls under the Northern region and, according to hgtv.com , that episode is slated to air on May 6.

"Ugliest House in America" Season 5 debuts at 8 p.m. Monday on HGTV. The show can also be streamed on Max, available the same days and times HGTV episodes are released.

On the House: 7 Tips for Successfully Navigating the Spring Housing Market

Q: what are some tips for first-time homebuyers in this spring’s busy housing market.

Spring is the season of new beginnings. That’s appropriate as it’s also the kickoff to the busy housing market. Here’s what first-time buyers need to know to have the best chance of purchasing a home this season.

1. Be prepared for competition

While homes aren’t selling as fast as they were during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s still a seller’s market in most of the country. That means you’re likely to face heavy competition from fellow buyers, especially if you’re eyeing an affordably priced, move-in ready home in a good location.

These properties are likely to sell quickly, often in bidding wars , and for more than the asking price.

That’s why first-time buyers should be prepared. Know your local market, how often homes in your price range go up for sale, if the homes typically sell for over or under the asking price (and by how much), and how fast they sell. This knowledge is power that can help get your offer accepted.

If your budget is limited, see if there’s anything else you could offer the sellers to sweeten the deal. Maybe you can close quickly or contribute a larger down payment?

2. Get pre-approved for a mortgage

This one is key. If you start shopping online or showing up at open houses, you might just find The One . But if you don’t have a pre-approval letter from a lender, you could lose out on the home of your dreams, especially in a competitive market.

This letter shows sellers that you’re a serious buyer who should be able to qualify for a mortgage. If there are multiple offers on a home, sellers are apt to pick buyers who can pay in cash or can prove they will be able to secure financing.

The process is also helpful for many buyers to see how large of a loan they can qualify for—if at all.

Counterintuitively, it’s also good to pay down as much debt as you can, even if you’re focused on saving up for a down payment, before seeking a pre-approval. You also want to bring up your credit score. That’s because the less debt you have and the higher your credit score, the more likely you are to be approved for a higher amount.

3. Don’t wait for President Joe Biden’s $4oo monthly tax credit

It’s probably best not to hold your breath for the $400 a month tax credit , good for two years, that President Joe Biden mentioned in the State of the Union last month.

While it would be a boon for first-time buyers, the proposal hasn’t been approved by Congress yet. It’s likely to face an uphill battle.

Additionally, while that extra money in your pocket might sound great, it’s likely to incentivize more buyers to jump into the market. More buyers equals more competition for a very limited supply of housing . That could result in more bidding wars, offers over the asking price, and higher home prices.

4. Expect mortgage rates won’t meaningfully fall this spring

Many buyers had hoped mortgage rates would fall this spring. It looked promising for a while, too, as they dropped about a percentage point at the end of last year.

But rates have been rising recently and just pushed past 7% again. The reason: Inflation is once again ticking up. So the Fed is expected to keep rates higher for longer, which means mortgage rates are expected to stay elevated.

5. Apply for down payment assistance

This is a no-brainer. Why wouldn’t you want free money that you can put toward your down payment and often closing costs as well?

Across the country, there are more than 2,000  down payment assistance programs. Buyers can qualify for them based on their incomes, professions, military service, disabilities, where they hope to buy, as well as many other factors.

Just remember to read the fine print. Some programs require you to live in the home for a set time or use it as your primary home. If you violate any of the conditions, you could be on the hook for paying that money back.

Check out how much you might be eligible for here .

6. Consider new construction

Many first-time buyers don’t even consider new construction because they assume it’s too expensive.

However, many builders have recently been focused on putting up smaller, more affordable units. Some are also offering lower mortgage rates, which can save buyers big money.

Even brand-new abodes with higher price tags might offer lower monthly mortgage payments than older properties. Some larger builders are now buying down rates for two or three years—or for the full 30 years of a fixed-rate loan. Smaller ones might also be offering their own discounts.

It doesn’t hurt to find out because it might just pay to look beyond the sticker price.

7. Negotiate as much as possible

I’m a huge fan of this last tip: Don’t be afraid to haggle with your seller, builder, or even your mortgage company. You won’t know how much you could save until you ask.

In some slower markets, sellers might be willing to lower the price or even contribute to your closing costs. Or perhaps they’re willing to make costly repairs or improvements so that money doesn’t have to come out of your budget.

Builders might be willing to buy down your mortgage rate or throw in an upgrade or two. And shopping around for a mortgage could save you thousands of dollars. Some lenders will even match offers from competing mortgage companies.

But you should realize that if you’re putting in an offer on a move-in ready home at a lower price that has lots of other interested buyers, the sellers might be less willing to negotiate with you.

Green Bay, Brown County optimistic about chances coal piles will move as White House official tours site

house tour coquetes

GREEN BAY - The Port of Green Bay applied for a $25 million federal grant to cover higher-than-expected costs to build a new port facility, a project key to ongoing community efforts to relocate the coal piles out of the central city.

The port in February applied for a U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE Discretionary Grant to close a budget gap in a plan to develop a new multipurpose port facility on the former Pulliam Power Plant site at the mouth of the Fox River. Cost estimates last fall showed improvements and infrastructure work on the site would cost about $48.7 million , about $19 million more than originally expected.

The RAISE grant program has about $1.5 billion to award in 2024.

Port Director Dean Haen said the community's application included letters of support from 40 businesses, legislators and Gov. Tony Evers that "make our case why it's very important to Green Bay." He said the grant is necessary to ensure construction starts in 2025 on the new port facility along the west shore at the mouth of the Fox River.

Senior aide to President Joe Biden tours Green Bay coal piles site

The port won't find out until summer whether it receives the grant, but a senior White House official toured the coal piles site during a visit to Green Bay on Thursday , giving local officials the opportunity to drive the point home that the city, county, and C. Reiss Coal Co. are "all aligned," said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich.

The tour, as much as the guest of honor, carried some import in itself — It was the first time C. Reiss Coal Co. representatives joined city of Green Bay and Brown County officials to tour the site and publicly discuss the relocation since the community first identified an opportunity to relocate the coal yard in 2021.

Keith Haselhoff, CEO of C. Reiss Coal Co. , met with senior adviser to President Joe Biden and Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Tom Perez, Genrich, Haen and other city and county officials. Perez also toured City East Center , a city- and state-funded affordable housing development and new home of the Brown County United Way .

Perez said the collaborative work of the city, county, business community, and C. Reiss Coal is often a key to securing grants, though he personally does not judge any applications.

"I see potential, remarkable potential," Perez said after touring the C. Reiss site. "There's obviously leadership here."

'We're optimistic this can be a success'

Haselhoff said C. Reiss continues to take its cues from the city and county as they pursue the money necessary to pull off the port expansion, relocation of C. Reiss and redevelopment of the coal yard site. But he said the company is optimistic at this point and continues to discuss its operational needs with the community partners.

"We're optimistic this can be a success," Haselhoff said. "New beginnings are always exciting."

The company has not said much publicly, but that does not mean it hasn't been closely involved, Genrich said. He called the company a "constructive partner" since the county and city got serious.

"They've never said, 'No, we're not interested,'" Genrich said. "They've been at the table figuring out how to make it work for themselves and the community."

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach said the community and company efforts to date have positioned the region to, after 25 years of talks, "reimagine what the next 100 years will look like" for the riverfront site.

After 4 years of work, Green Bay, Brown County, C. Reiss have community close to plan to relocate coal piles

Brown County in 2021 paid $2.7 million to Wisconsin Public Service Corp. for the former J.P. Pulliam power plant site. WPS generated electricity on the 43.7-acre site from 1927 until 2018 when WPS shut down the two coal-fired power plants and began demolishing them.

The county saw the property as an opportunity to expand port operations in an industrial area of Green Bay on a site with room to relocate the coal piles, a goal community leaders have pursued for decades now. The riverfront site has been a coal yard since 1900, C. Reiss officials said.

Genrich has called the relocation a "once-in-a-city's-lifetime" transformation of the community's waterfront.

But first, the port expansion site needs a lot of costly work and port officials have so far secured about $30.8 million in funding:

  • $15 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars via Gov. Tony Evers .
  • $10.1 million federal Port Infrastructure Development Program Grant .
  • $500,000 Idle Sites Grant  from Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to help buy the property.
  • $3.2 million in Brown County American Rescue Plan Act dollars.
  • $2.1 million in WisDOT Harbor Assistance Grants.

The funding and engineering work to design the port expansion enabled the community to accelerate discussions with C. Reiss Coal Co. about relocating the coal piles.

In Depth: A port, a power plant and partnerships: How Green Bay and Brown County could finally relocate the coal piles

What's the Port of Green Bay expansion project?

The site needs improvements and upgrades on land and in the Fox River in order to potentially facilitate a variety of maritime deliveries and pickups. This site would be publicly owned in contrast to the 14 current port terminals that are privately owned and operated. The new port facility on its own could bolster the port's economic impact by as much as $87 million.

A major component of the project would involve dredging along the site and installation of a steel dock wall to enable ships to dock at the site. Construction plans include:

  • Dredge the Fox River along the site and install a steel dock wall to enable ships to access the site.
  • Construct a rail spur.
  • Fill in the docking slip on the Pulliam site.
  • Build a stormwater detention basin.
  • Add mooring facilities and crane pads for port operations.
  • Repair the sea wall.

While some road and infrastructure construction could start still this year, Haen said the community needs to win a RAISE Grant if it wants to start construction on the port-specific improvements in 2025.

Coal piles site could become housing, port site and ... Green Bay's Amtrak station?

City and county officials envision a port/industrial operation, housing and, possibly, an Amtrak station on the coal piles current site. The overall goal would be to activate the riverfront and develop a mix of uses that complements the Shipyard Redevelopment Area housing and recreational amenities coming together just north of the Mason Street bridge.

The northern 10 acres of the site, closest to Mason Street, would be marketed to housing developers.

The southern 20-plus acres would be used to create a new port site to facilitate some industrial uses in order to further bolster the port's current $217 million economic impact .

And with northeastern Wisconsin being awarded $500,000 to study passenger rail expansion from Milwaukee north to Green Bay , Genrich also pitched the coal piles site as a potential location for a new Amtrak terminal. He touted the site as well-located between downtown Green Bay and the rapidly developing Lambeau Field stadium and entertainment district.

"(A train station) can a lot of times be a pretty catalytic presence. We'd love to have a station located here as well," Genrich said.

Founder of women's support network visits OKC's new Magdalene House: 'Love is the sole force for change'

National women's support network founder tours new okc residential program site.

house tour coquetes

A new Oklahoma City residential program for women will succeed if it is adequately funded, leaders are committed and supporters look for all the ways they can help those in need of hope and second chances.

But the Rev. Becca Stevens, founder of Magdalene House Nashville and the national Thistle Farms network, said all of these factors contributing to favorable outcomes for the new Magdalene House OKC will need an important ingredient to enhance its mission: love.

"Love is the sole force for change," she said.

More: Newly purchased Oklahoma house has a special purpose: as a safe home for women in need

Stevens, 60, an Episcopal priest, author and chaplain at St. Augustine's Episcopal Chapel at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, recently shared her recipe for the local program's success at a spring luncheon held to raise awareness and additional funds for Magdalene House OKC.

The new social enterprise was founded by the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma as a nonprofit organization offering a residential program with recovery and healing support for women who have experienced abuse, sexual exploitation, addiction or incarceration.

The Oklahoma City program is part of Stevens' Thistle Farms support network for women. During her recent visit to the metro area, she toured the residential home where the program's first three participants are currently living. She said the home was "beautiful" and praised Magdalene House OKC leaders' efforts to make it an inviting haven for program participants.

"You have no idea there's so many people, in so many cities who are trying this, and they would just love to have what you've built here. It is stunning," Stevens said.

"I love that you and I together have helped grow a large network. Seventy-five communities are open with over 600 beds."

Magdalene House OKC leaders, like the Rev. Tim Baer and the Rev. Dana Orwig, have said the local program is based on Steven's Magdalene House Nashville that she opened in 1997 with five women who had experienced addiction, trafficking and violence as the first residents.

Baer, the Magdalene House OKC board chairman and rector of Yukon's Grace Episcopal Church, and Orwig, a Magdalene House OKC board member and deacon at Grace Church, said women may live at Magdalene House OKC at no cost for up to two years as they pursue sobriety, self-worth, health and financial independence.

Baer said the first program participant arrived in January. He said two of the three current participants entered the Magdalene House OKC program after leaving prison, and the third participant, who had been incarcerated, arrived after participating in a sobriety program.

The priest said program was prepared to welcome its first residents once key staff members were hired, particularly Shannon Hartsock, the program's executive director, and Lakitia Bates, who serves as program director. He and other Magdalene House OKC leaders have said Oklahoma's high female incarceration rate was one of the reasons for starting the residential program because there is an ongoing need for programs offering aid to women after they get out of prison.

'Love letter to God'

Stevens told the Oklahoma luncheon crowd not to wait to be inspired to help women and others in need of love, hope and support. She said offering such aid should be a commitment.

"That is what love is, to do the work," Stevens said.

The money or commerce to operate the program will be part of what she described as the "love economy." Finally, she encouraged Magdalene House OKC supporters to be curious about how they can best help women in need of care. And she said it will be important to help the women become the "heroes" of their own stories as they seek better lives.

When the residential program leaders and supporters do all these things, "you can live this life as a love letter to God," Stevens said.

More: Oklahoma to join national network for survivors with Magdalene House OKC

She said she has heard the stories of women coming from horrible situations and difficult circumstances who need love and care of the church and surrounding communities.

"I've heard this story told in 27 different languages about the toll this takes on women's lives," Stevens said.

"When you invest in women, you heal whole communities."

Sabrina Carpenter Wore Rhinestone Undies To Perform At Coachella

If ever there was a time and place for it...

Sabrina Carpenter performs at the Coachella Stage during the 2024 Coachella.

There’s no stopping Sabrina Carpenter. After months of opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, AKA the “Taybrina era,” and going viral for her “Nonsense” adlib outros, which she famously tailors to each locale, she’s back on stages once again. This time, she popped up in the desert for Coachella 2024’s opening weekend.

Carpenter took the festival stage on Friday, April 12, and wowed the crowd several times over. This was largely due to her A+ set list, of course, but it was also because of her multiple outfit changes.

Sabrina’s Shades Of Beige

Even before the TikTok-aided rise of coquettecore, Carpenter has carved her space among fashion’s most discerning as an icon of girlhood. Thus far, her oft-cutesy ensembles have included heart-shaped cut-outs, ruffled bloomers, and bows, coquette’s most recognizable symbol.

For her Coachella performance, however, Carpenter veered from her signature style. Instead, she went for a bit more bite. Replacing her usual frills, the singer rocked a Roberto Cavalli snakeskin jacket in tan and butter tones, which she layered over a bedazzled top with a fringed hem. The sparkly silver number perfectly matched her crystal-encrusted microphone — a performer’s ultimate accessory.

Playing homage to the late designer, whose passing was announced earlier that day, Carpenter wore a pleated micro mini also from Cavalli. Complete with a super-short hemline, the waistband was embellished with bejeweled panthers, the Italian house’s iconic logo.

Her Glitzy Undies

No stranger to short-short hemlines, Carpenter made sure to wear undies worth flaunting. Adding even more sparkle to her already glitzy desert look, the pop star added a bejeweled bra and matching panties. And it was absolutely the right choice — there’s one place to wear bedazzled underwear, it’s definitely Coachella.

Sabrina’s “Feather”-Coded Look

Changing into another Cavalli number, the “Feather” singer leaned into the theme of her hit song. She wore a little white dress (the spring equivalent of an LBD) that was positively befeathered, with plumes attached to the sleeves and hem. Adding even more texture, its heart-shaped bodice was blanketed in crystals.

She topped off the look with a diaphanous robe with — surprise, surprise — more feathers. She further merchandised the ensemble with white platform boots that, like the rest of her on-stage uniform, were also completely yassified. A winning Coachella debut.
