Inside the Cathartic Bliss of Drain Gang, Gen Z’s Emo Torchbearers

Last month, in the expansive parking lot of a door factory turned music venue in Queens , I found myself submerged within a throng of young people waiting to get into the second night of the Swedish music collective Drain Gang ’s sold-out New York performances. The crowd chattered excitedly over one another, some chain smoking and a few filming TikToks. They all shared a specific aesthetic sensibility: nods to Y2K-era camp and goth-inspired pop-punk mixed with gender-neutral eyeliner, bedazzled sunglasses, and fingerless gloves. There were skater beanies in profusion.

The current generation’s boundless penchant for self-expression felt, in no uncertain terms, duly embodied.

The four members of Drain Gang — artists Ecco2k , Thaiboy Digital, and Bladee , alongside the producer Whitearmor — were touring together for the first time across the States. Thaiboy’s Swedish resident visa ended in 2015 (he emigrated with his mother from Thailand as a child) and he has since moved to Bangkok, where he’s had a daughter and continued to make music with the group remotely. And while they’ve been able to visit him over all these years, seeing his longtime friends and collaborators together as a unit was enough to send most of New York’s Gen-Z population into a frenzy.

Just before their set of shows, Ecco2k and Bladee released their joint album, Crest. The record is a soaring and rapturous triumph that feels like their most ambitious project yet. At times, straightforward songs unfurl to become ballads with elaborate and mercurial immensity. Delivered via Nordic-accented Auto-Tune, their lyrics reverberate with raw emotion: contemplative studies on love, pain, partying, and friendship that can verge on the poetically recondite, aligning with the canon of timeless literary crooners like Leonard Cohen or outsider musicians such as Daniel Johnston.

The album’s anthemic opener, “The Flag Is Raised,” might very well be one of the best this year. An exhilarating and spiritually liberating homecoming, it symbolizes the announcement of a newfound chapter for the group. “I’m-I’m coming home, Virginia-inia,” Bladee, 28, croons. “I’m but a shell, baby, the hero is the soul.” Like most anything made in our post-postmodern moment, Drain Gang’s music is an amalgam of YouTube-plundered references and incisive self-reflection.

Their sound doesn’t have the eager, trend-seeking energy of more polished young musicians, managing instead to find something organic in a world saturated in synthetics. To record Crest amongst nature, Ecco2k, Whitearmor, and Bladee drove to “the edge of Sweden” and rented a cottage minutes away from the cliff-bound beach from Ingmar Bergman’s fantasy epic The Seventh Seal.

The location is fitting, as the album is distinctly Swedish, a national pride that Bladee says the group rejected altogether in their youth. “And then on this album, we began to understand how growing up in Sweden, and being Swedish, is something to be proud of.” The project isn’t concerned with nationalism per sé, more like an embrace of, and coming to terms with, one’s core roots.

A few days after the show, the five of us sit at a Brooklyn outpost of Soho House, sticking out amongst the bougie millennial freelancers working on their laptops. “[We’re expressing] something really true to us, or something that we’re actually feeling. We’ve never compromised on that. We will always do what we want to make,” Bladee explains of their ethos. The group was dressed in an eclectic mix of streetwear and experimental pieces. Ecco2k, a former designer for the Swedish brand Eytys, wore a pair of Gummo -style black bunny ears and elegant pink acrylics; Thaiboy Digital sported a Burberry plaid trucker hat over his shaggy bleached hair. 

Drain Gang started around the time they were all in middle school in Stockholm. Bladee, Ecco2k, Thaiboy, and Whitearmor — née Benjamin Reichwald, Zak Arogundade Gaterud, Thanapat Bunleang, and Ludwig Rosenberg, respectively — started making music under the moniker Gravity Boys Shield Gang. Posting their songs and experimental, low-fi music videos online, their after-school hobby led them to a fortuitous crossover with other famed Stockholm collective Sad Boys. This marked an ongoing collaboration with notable members like Yung Lean and producer Yung Sherman. 

Their organic approach of collaboration through friendship is a lynchpin to their prodigious body of work. “Since we were young, [we’ve had] a collective world, or mythology. It’s always been so many inside jokes, and insular references, to the point where we could almost not socialize with other people at all,” Ecco2k says. “And I think we’re still very much like that. But now our common language and common ideas [are] something that we can pick from when we’re making stuff.”

The group’s multidimensional sound exists in a class of its own. You can hear elements of early Yung Lean-era “cloud rap” in the production — low-fi synths and drum-machine loops serve as a kind of sonic foundation — but the group ventures everywhere and anywhere, allowing a stream-of-consciousness mood to infect the atmosphere of an otherwise pop-inspired sensibility. Take, for instance, Ecco2k and Bladee’s single “Amygdala,” released in January. “I flirt with faith, I’m flirty/Crystal rings, my name/ Valhalla calling, fallin’,” Bladee coos. “Beauty and the Beast/I walk and star signs upwards, glory and the fame/Elysian fields forever, endless flowers sing the hymn.”

The lines are abstract, but it’s precisely this enigmatic quality that’s proven to be so compelling for listeners. Drain Gang have emerged as one of those rare acts that exist both in and for a generation. As such, the group has experienced a steady rise in notoriety and devotion over the past decade. Collectively, they described a “snowball” effect that occurred during the pandemic. Apparently young people quarantined at home were discovering their music, and becoming obsessed.

The group’s fans emphatically refer to themselves as “Drainers,” and their prolific dedication is clear if you take a brief scroll through the comment sections of Drain Gang’s YouTube videos, or if you take a look at the colossal volume of DG-dedicated meme pages. Drainers have responded to the group’s enigmatic body of work by forming a veritable ecosystem of their very own. Most of the listeners I spoke to discovered the group by way of memes at the onset of the pandemic, and only started listening to its music after the fact. A fan I messaged on Reddit told me that the group’s universe building is so immense that he felt one “could write a book about all of it.”

Perhaps you could say we’ve entered the most emotionally intelligent — or at least emotionally aware — era in recent history. Today’s generation of internet-saturated young people have all been encouraged to develop a deeper capacity for emotional nuance and expression via the digital realms of Instagram, TikTok, and Discord. And while this shift has rendered the scholarly definitions of terms like “gaslighting,” “love bombing,” and “toxic masculinity” next to meaningless, it is nonetheless impressive to see the ways in which the youth have managed to identify and communicate emotions in a world that can feel so difficult to just exist in.

As the swarm of Drainers outside the venue in Queens grew restless, the skies grew heavy with the imminent threat of a downpour before thunderously cracking open. The sold-out crowd would be baptized in the rain before gaining admittance. Eventually, with what felt like an entire generational cohort packed into the venue, Drain Gang took to the stage, opening with the euphoric and widely-beloved track “Western Union,” from their 2019 mixtape Trash Island. Watching sweat-soaked bodies thrash around in unison felt like a kind of blissed-out exorcism of the hellish past few years. Drain Gang’s members were preachers at the pulpit, and we were their devout acolytes, clinging to every line from the night’s sermon.

The Thai rapper finding strength in sacrifice

Thaiboy digital was deported from sweden two years ago, but today the drain gang associate and yung lean collaborator is finding a way to keep his head above the surface.

Two years ago, Thaiboy Digital  was deported from Sweden. Having lived in the Nordic country since the age of nine, the rapper suddenly found his entire life uprooted, including his close relationship with Drain Gang – a crew of young Swedish rappers and producers who have a close bond with Yung Lean’s Sad Boys, featuring musicians such as Yung Sherman and Bladee. Back in his birth country, he moved in with his parents in Phuket and continued to work on music with the crew remotely, but after a chance introduced to the rapper Younggu, he moved to Bangkok, where they’ve been working together on music since.

For his latest EP, however, Thaiboy Digital travelled back to Sweden for a summer. S.o.S. , which stands for ‘Suicide or Sacrifice’, is an emotional snapshot of this period in his life. On “Nothing 2 Fear”, he sings devotedly about a girl he left behind in Thailand: “There is no one like her,” he asserts over a heavy coating of AutoTune. Connecting with producers Yung Gud, Groundislava, and close affiliate Woesum, the EP sees him pulling in chugging 80s synths and blending them with trance presets and happy hardcore, combining heartfelt verses with joyous, euphoric production for some of his best output yet.

In the video for “Magic”, directed by Yung Lean collaborator Rigel Kilston, Thaiboy Digital moves fluidly through a pavilion surrounded by peach and deep purple-leafed trees. We talked to the rapper about the EP, rebuilding his life in Thailand, and how his relationship with Drain Gang has been since being deported.

Is there any sort of narrative or concept that runs through S.o.S ?

Thaiboy Digital: All the songs are sort of about this one girl and the current situation of my life at the time. It was a Suicide or Sacrifice situation.

Your S.o.S. EP is out next week. Could you talk about the process of making it and how these four tracks came together?

Thaiboy Digital: I recorded most of the songs in Sweden in 2016. The first two songs on the EP are produced by one of my good friends, Woesum. He did the ‘2seats’  track as well. Last year, while I was in Stockholm working on Suicide or Sacrifice , we linked up and made ‘Top Town’ and ‘Nothing 2 Fear’, which has a pretty different vibe from my old tracks. I was constantly on the phone with a girl from Thailand, which kind of tore me apart – I spent my summer in Sweden, but my heart was back in Thailand.

The third track, with me and Gud, happened while we was working in the same studio. I just asked him like, ‘Bro, let’s make some fire.’ The first track that came out of that session was ‘Magic’. The last track on the EP was recorded in LA after Yung Lean’s Warlord tour, which I was opening on. I stayed behind in LA for another week after the tour and my friend Karman linked me up with Groundislava. I told him that I was into happy hardcore and Basshunter-type songs, so we made ’Ruby’.

The artwork for it is really striking – a boat sinking in the middle of ice caps. What does that image mean to you?

Thaiboy Digital: Gotta keep your head over the surface at all time. Sacrifice one thing to get the other. 

You’ve worked with producers such as GUD, Groundislava and Palmistry on some of your newer music. What do you look for when you are searching for beats to rap or sing over?  

Thaiboy Digital: I prefer to work with producers that bring something new to the game. People that I respect and they respect my way of making my thing, you know? Someone who can bring the vibe into the tracks and then evolve with it. I don’t want to get stuck on the same vibe. The music changes with my mood/life.

In 2015, the Swedish Immigration Board deported you to your birth home of Thailand. Can you tell us about that?

Thaiboy Digital: I mean, it really sucked that I had to leave all my homies you know? I lived there for ten years. But it wasn’t the end of the world. Shortly after the bros came to visit me, and that’s when we recorded AvP   (his 2016 EP with Bladee). I can still go back to Sweden now, so it’s all good.

How did you rebuild your life once you’d relocated?

Thaiboy Digital: When I came back, I moved and lived with my parents in Phuket. One day, a rapper in Thailand called Younggu reached out to me through Instagram and said he’d heard I’m back in Thailand. He wanted me to come to Bangkok – said he wanted to show me around and book me a show and stuff. I booked the ticket the same day and I flew there like a month later, and I’ve been living there since.

Did it change the course of your music career or did you continue working as you would have normally done in Sweden when you were back in Thailand?

Thaiboy Digital: Yeah, I don’t know. Maybe, I guess? I'm not in the studio with my gang anymore, so I can't make music as fast as I used too. But I still go to the studio here in Thailand every time I’ve got another one on lock. 

Are you part of any group of artists out in Bangkok or are you connecting with people musically in other ways?

Thaiboy Digital: I’m not in any group here, no. I’m forever GTB Drain Gang, man. Whitearmor will always be my main producer – but Younggu and Thug Mansion, they’re my brothers too out here in Bangkok. 

What did the move mean for Drain Gang?  

Thaiboy Digital: We can’t hang out like we used too and make tracks and videos as fast, but we’re global now – we can link up anywhere. We’ve got a Drain Gang compilation coming up later this year followed by a UK/EU tour, so you know we'll drain your city soon.
