The outspoken rising star putting Hungarian music on the map. Meet your new favourite artist.

Earlier this year, 21-year-old Azahriah became the youngest artist ever to sell out Budapest’s 14,000 capacity Papp László Sport Aréna.

The second half of the year saw him sell out a European tour, including a date at London’s Islington Assembly Hall in November.

Azahriah’s breakout hit, the insanely catchy pop trap track Four Moods , was one of the biggest songs of 2022, clocking up over 30 million views on YouTube, and the release of his new album in May has pushed his streaming figures to well over 100 million.

While he might seem like an overnight success, Azahriah’s success has been a long time in the making.

Azahriah, real name Baukó Attila, had a lonely upbringing. His mother was in the army and served in Kosovo (he often wears a military scarf in homage to her ) while his father was often away for work. He has always been an introvert and had few friends in school.

Like many young people, he turned to the internet to find community and aged 12, he started his own YouTube channel called Paul Street.

In the years that followed, the channel amassed over 500,000 subscribers who tuned in to hear his take on paranormal conspiracies and urban legends.

The content creator then turned his hand to music. Already a self-taught guitarist, he learnt how to produce music and started making demos. He released his debut LP, Camouflage, in 2021, and one year later he graced the main stage of Europe’s biggest music festival, Sziget.

Today Azahriah is one of the biggest artists in Hungary and now it seems that the rest of the world are catching on.

Released in May, Azahriah’s new album, memento , has been a critical and commercial success. It builds on sounds explored in his 2022 6-track EP silbak, drawing influences from reggae, hip-hop, and Balkan and gypsy folk.

The album’s lead single Introvertált dal  ( Introverted Song ), is equal parts melancholy and chaotic, where the singer questions his identity, relationships with others and when he last felt happy.

Elsewhere, he turns his attention towards wider society. For instance, four moods 2 caused a stir for its biting commentary on his country’s politics and corruption.

It opens with a quote from Hungary’s Political Director Balázs Orbán, whose government have been criticized for restricting freedom of the press: “ Ki uralja egy adott ország médiáját, az eldönti, hogy ki uralja az adott ország gondolkodását, és ezen keresztül, hogy ki uralja az adott országot .” Translation: “Whoever controls the media, controls the mindset of that country and through that, the country itself.” Featured Carribean artist Queen Omega urges people to think for themselves and stand up for their rights in the outro.

Azahriah’s output doesn’t stop there. This year the rising star also released an EP in collaboration with fellow Hungarian rapper DESH.

What will 2024 have in store? Only time will tell, but it doesn’t look as though Azahriah is slowing down any time soon.

Az összes koncert telt házas Azahriah első európai turnéján

2023. október 31. – 16:28

A bűnügyi műsorok otthona!

Azahriah’s manager Gergő Tóth: „We’re doing an international tour for Azahriah”

To celebrate musical export, alongside Platon Karataev, Azahriah represented Hungary at Eurosonic in Groningen, Netherlands. The showcase festival and music conference, which showcases the most promising European talents, has launched the careers of global stars such as Dua Lipa. Therefore, the question arises as to what impact Azahriah’s presence will have on the musician’s already blooming career. We had a conversation about their experiences in Groningen and future prospects with the sinnger’s manager Gergő Tóth.

What was Azahriah’s highlight on the Eurosonic palette and what kind of feedback did you receive?

In Azahriah’s previous development, we focused only on the domestic scene. Here, we managed to build a stable audience which was evident in the numbers. This is why the production was selected for the festival. Thanks to this, we had several meetings that we conducted on-site before, during and after the concert with various concert organizers, other music industry professionals, publishers and royalty experts. In certain cases, they viewed Azi as a business opportunity, while in other cases, we saw potential in collaboration. We don’t see this showcase festival as an X-Factor-style talent show where if someone impresses the professionals, they are immediately embraced, become a global star and appear on the cover of a German magazine the next day. We will gradually navigate from point A to point B, carefully weighing the opportunities. There are many good signs, some of which can be seen as encouraging. The Supermanagement team consists of experienced professionals who will calmly evaluate the possibilities. We work with the singer of PASO, KRSA, who serves as Azahriah’s day-to-day manager overseeing daily tasks. He has toured extensively abroad and understands international processes. We also have Peti Kedves from the Belau band with us. Through his fresh and relevant network, he has been most involved in the Eurosonic appearance. I have also toured a lot abroad with my band (Blind Myself – ed.), so I have my own experiences. The three of us work on Azi’s project and accompanied her to Groningen. My co-founder Balázs Ferich oversees our work. Our plan is to organize an international tour for Azahriah in the fall and until then, we are striving to build his presence beyond borders so that at the end of the year, he won’t be perceived as a foreign artist by the international audience. This will consume a lot of time, energy and especially money. We’re taking it step by step and will see how far we can go. By the way, the professionals who were present at Azi’s concert in the Netherlands spoke positively about him.

europe tour azahriah

That’s right. We already have experience, so our “bullshit detector” works quite well when something doesn’t seem right. We try to be as realistic as possible. For example, imagine you have to promote a band from Kazakhstan in Hungary. How would you do it? In which newspapers and articles would they need to appear to make an impact? It’s evidently a challenging task but we have to think similarly when it comes to Azahriah in other countries. He is a popular artist in Hungary but for example, in Germany, he is no further ahead than a band from Kazakhstan. However, I believe that in Kazakhstan, there are also artists who can resonate with the Hungarian or international audience. That’s why I trust that Azahriah is capable of connecting with people in foreign markets. There are a few positive signs as well. An English concert agency specializing in concert organization showed great interest in him. We have already had several negotiations with them. On the other hand, there was a professional who said they would not license the production at the moment because they have no experience with how foreign-language audiences respond to Azi’s music. There’s nothing wrong with that. So far, we have only focused on building Azahriah’s presence in the domestic scene because we felt we needed to wait. Now is the time to take the first steps. The Eurosonic festival and the negotiations we participated in were the first round of that. Do you need to know all the necessary professionals for international expansion? What kind of network is needed in such cases?

In Hungary, we have it much easier in this regard. For example, if we want to appear on the RTL Morning Show for an interview, we know who to call and with some luck, we can arrange the conversation with a few phone calls. The process is different in France and it would be more challenging for us there. Instead of directly reaching out, we would contact a publisher who would license our production. This means they also invest energy and money and we share the profits in a certain percentage. So, this publisher takes the steps mentioned earlier with the local television stations, radio stations, and so on. The other option for us, Supermanagement, is to enter into a contract with a promotional agency that would do the work for us. This means that the contact details of the French television morning show editor wouldn’t have to be in my phone. Someone else would be responsible for that. The larger the artist, the more complex this system becomes. For a global superstar like Justin Bieber, it’s not just one person pulling the strings. There are separate agencies for each aspect. Hungary is a small country. Here, concert organization, publishing and promotion are centralized within one office. However, internationally, these are separate tasks handled by larger companies.

Azahriah has become remarkably recognized and successful in an astonishingly short period of time. It is highly likely that his previous life took a sudden turn and the world expanded for him. A dream is becoming true but in my understanding, this carries weight, not only due to the expectations of his listeners but also because of the responsibility he feels towards them. How can you support him at the management level and ensure that he has more than enough mental and emotional strength for this journey?

From what I can see, Azi is incredibly resilient, creative, and deeply passionate about making music. That’s what motivates him. Fortunately, he isn’t ’full’ yet. He doesn’t feel that he can relax now with a sold-out arena concert behind him. Instead, his enthusiasm drives him forward. Music and everything related to it flows through him. He remains just as active as he was a year and a half ago. We have observed that he approaches opportunities with great humility. He knows exactly what he wants to see, hear and feel. He envisions music videos, merchandising and stage shows – all of the ideas are in his mind. Naturally, we provide him with everything possible, we mobilize significant resources to support his career. This collaboration works best when both parties give their maximum effort. What is the driving force behind Azahriah’s work that gives him such a boost to exist and operate as a creator and performer with such consciousness, perseverance and unified thinking?

Every performer has their own internal driving force. I believe these are the deepest feelings that are the most challenging to convey to the general public and perhaps it’s not even necessary to do so. I think it’s good to have some mysteries surrounding an artist. We have to accept him for who he is and enjoy what emanates from his art. It’s good to retain a sense of mystique which allows us to imagine things within their music. This keeps everything exciting. Those who pay close attention to the lyrics will undoubtedly form a picture of him.

Growing up with a mother being in the army (two missions in Kosovo) and a father who often works abroad, Azahriah was used to doing things on his own. So much so, he barely had any friends in elementary school.

Getting fed up with always being the lonely one, at age 12 he started his

YouTube channel, called Paul Street, gaining more and more popularity with his mystery/paranormal themed stories. This was literally a life saver for him: when dropped out of high school for being bullied by one of his teachers, he really could use the positive vibes starting over everything in a new school.

After reaching 500 000 followers, becoming one of the best known content creators in his country, Azahriah decided to move forward and fulfill his singer-songwriter dreams. As his videos had nothing to do with music, this definitely could have been a burden – but not for him. He knew exactly what he was doing. Already a qualified guitar player (perks of being alone a lot as a child), he started to learn music making and sound engineering and started to make his first demos.

Status update: he’s a multi-instrumentalist pop star with 300 000 subscribers and more than 150 million plays on YouTube, and more than 100 million streams on Spotify.

His first solo LP, Camouflage (2021) was critically well received. It took him less than two years from start to dominate one of Europe’s biggest music festival’s, Sziget Festival’s main stage, where he premiered his six track solo EP Silbak. The song Four Moods was definitely one of the biggest hits of 2022 (16 million+ plays on YouTube, almost 7 million audio streams and still counting). Even the visualizer itself became a TikTok trend: everybody made their own version of the funny scenes from teens to middle-aged celebrities.

Packed with wise lyrics and catchy tunes, Azahriah’s songs never fail to serve the audience with surprising and entertaining inspirations from trap to reggae.

Top prospects announced for 41st staging of the European Open

The 41st European Open on the North Course at Green Eagle Golf Courses will present an attractive mix of thrilling top-class sport and exciting live entertainment from May 30 to June 2, 2024.

GettyImages-1495664082

"We are incredibly excited about the European Open this year," said Tournament Director Dirk Glittenberg. "We saw in 2023 what an inspiring atmosphere is created in the natural grandstands at Green Eagle Golf Courses when the title is at stake. Goosebumps are already inevitable. The impressive atmosphere on this great course for fans, plus top-class golf and a spectacular live experience with side events around the famous Ferris wheel - we are looking forward to this event with great excitement, which once again guarantees a first-class golf spectacle."

One of the key questions is whether the many German fans on the Nord Course will be able to celebrate their first home victory on the DP World Tour in 16 years after recent strong German performances - or whether one of the top international golfers will be able to lift the legendary European Open trophy into the North German sky. Germany's Marcel Siem and Max Kieffer, who came very close to triumph last year as runners-up in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators, will once again challenge the top Northern Irish talent Tom McKibbin, winner of the 2023 European Open. Rasmus Højgaard (Denmark), Matteo Manassero (Italy), Bernd Wiesberger (Austria), Haotong Li (China), Rafa Cabrera Bello and Pablo Larrazàbal (both Spain), Jesper Svensson (Sweden) and Major winner Danny Willett will also tee it up in Hamburg. The 2016 Masters Champion will tee off in Hamburg for the first time after his strong comeback at Augusta last week.

"I can’t wait to head over to Hamburg for the European Open this year and hopefully it will be a great week," said Willett. "I had six months away from the game after undergoing surgery on my left shoulder. After putting in a lot of hard work into my rehab and working with the team around me, I’m buzzing to get back out on the course," said Willet, who was surprisingly able to play right up front on his surprise return at Augusta a few days ago.

"I’m looking forward to teeing it up at Green Eagle Golf Courses and we always receive great support in Germany from the fans. I enjoy playing in Germany and in 2012 I was able to get my first win on the DP World Tour," explains the 36-year-old, who has collected other titles in his career in addition to the Major in Augusta, including the Dubai World Championship, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

The former top ten player in the world will be up against highly motivated German starters on his debut, in addition to the major task of the Nord Course. After four second places in the past five editions, Germany is hoping to crown its first German winner of the prestigious tournament since Bernhard Langer in 1995. The North Course at Green Eagle Golf Courses, with its rousing atmosphere, has always been a great place for the top German golfers.

"The atmosphere last year was fantastic," said Kieffer. Marcel Siem added: "I've never experienced such an outstanding atmosphere at a German tournament - it was by far the best tournament in terms of atmosphere. It is also one of the best tests of the year on the Tour."

Michael Blesch, founder and owner of Green Eagle Golf Courses, said: "Last year, the former DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley found the condition of our greens on Sunday in excellent condition. We want to measure ourselves against that again this year and are doing everything we can to present the right course for the great atmosphere. We have a long-term vision and want to develop this great event every year."

Ferris wheel and Porsche as a hole-in-one car

The event program on the Green Eagle Golf Courses course is also creating anticipation. The Ferris wheel is returning and, at a height of almost 40 meters, will provide the best views of the event directly behind the 18th green. The ride on the Ferris wheel is free of charge for tournament visitors. Below the Ferris wheel and at the top spots on the tournament course, such as the 14th fairway with a view of holes 13 to 16, food stands will ensure the best event atmosphere. A large number of exhibitors with side events and offers promise a comprehensive on-site experience in the Public Village. This includes new attractions and a further improved live experience for fans around the 14th hole. Another highlight is the emotional brand experience from Car Partner Porsche, which this year will once again include a spectacular hole-in-one prize on the famous 17th hole. HSV stadium announcer and Radio Hamburg Morning Show host Christian Stübinger will provide entertainment at various side events, on the 18th green and at the award ceremony.

VIP experience: golf up close with world-class cuisine

Thomas Bühner, one of the few German 3-star chefs, will be providing the team with top-class culinary delights during the tournament. The top chef has brought friends from international and regional cuisine to Hamburg to spoil his guests in the Garden Lounge directly on the 18th fairway with sports-inspired bistro cuisine and daily changing dishes. Tickets for the culinary journey with the best view of the sporting action are available at: https://europeanopen.golf/tickets/

Tournament tradition since 1978

The European Open will be held at the Green Eagle Golf Courses near Hamburg until at least 2026. An impressive success story is thus being continued. Since it was first held in 1978 - with a break between 2010 and 2014 - numerous world golf stars have tried to put their name on the impressive trophy. Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomery, Retief Goosen, Sir Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Paul Casey and Ian Woosnam, among others, have been successful.

Tickets for the spectacular week are now on sale. Children up to and including the age of twelve receive free admission to the tournament grounds on all tournament days. Discounted youth tickets are again available for young people aged 13 to 17. Link to ticket sales: https://europeanopen.golf/tickets/

European cities hope jet-setting Taylor Swift fans will splash the cash for Eras tour

The superstar arrives in Europe next month – and Swifties, tourist boards and venues are already preparing

T im Brown, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 34, may not consider themselves bona fide “Swifties”, but when it was announced last June that Taylor Swift would be visiting their corner of the globe this summer they could not resist joining the scramble for a pair of tickets.

A post-pandemic appetite for live music events has fuelled huge worldwide interest in the American singer-songwriter’s Eras tour, which surpassed in $1bn sales in November to become the highest-grossing series of concerts in history.

The pop culture event of the summer will arrive in Europe next month, kicking off in Paris on 9 May and wrapping up in London on 20 August with 49 dates in between in Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The unique nature of the tour’s ticketing system, which was tweaked after a number of hitches last year, means there will be a mass movement of travelling fans who will not only be Swiftie in affiliation but swift-like in their willingness to travel across the continent.

In expectation of intense demand, Ticketmaster introduced a pre-registration system that rewarded some early applicants with access codes to the ticket sale proper, via staggered windows for each city.

Notionally designed to prioritise genuine fans over “scalpers” – people who buy and resell tickets for a quick profit – the pre-sales system also meant many fans registered for tickets in multiple destinations across Europe to increase their chances.

Taylor Swift performs on stage amid a sea of confetti

Tim and Marcella, who live in Norwich, registered not just for the nearest concerts – in London and Liverpool – but also in Amsterdam and Lisbon. The pair got lucky with a pair of €91 tickets in the Portuguese capital and have turned the trip into a weekend break. “I used to live in Lisbon so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Tim said. “We booked ourselves flights and four nights’ accommodation the same day.” They are far from alone.

Katie Soo, the chief business officer of DICE, a rival ticketing company, said: “The excitement and uncertainty inherent in the ticket-purchasing process might have inadvertently incentivised fans to apply for tickets in multiple cities, thereby increasing the likelihood of travelling across Europe to attend the concerts.”

Hotel prices

Several European cities have already reported a sharp rise in demand for hotel and short-term rental accommodation over the summer, when the Swift hurricane will arrive. In Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff, rooms at the Travelodge chain around Swift’s June dates have been sold out since August 2023, a month after tickets for the shows went on sale.

In Paris, where fans anticipate Swift to debut an updated version of the Eras show with songs from the new Tortured Poets Department album, 80% of hotels and apartments listed on Booking.com are already full up. In Warsaw on 2 August, only 9% of hotels listed on the same site are still available.

Not all of the 18 cities covered by the Eras tour are obvious tourism destinations. From 17-19 July, Swift will play three concerts at the 65,000-capacity home ground of the football club Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in Ruhr valley, western Germany. The city’s less-than-familiar name prompted one US chatshow host to quip that “the place might not even exist”.

Yet even in Germany’s rust belt the influx of Swift fans is temporarily transforming the hotel market: any two-bedroom apartments that remain available are going for €800-2,000 a night, with cheaper accommodation available only in surrounding cities that are just as off the usual tourist track as Gelsenkirchen, such as Essen, Bochum or Herne.

Cities with stricter rules on allowing Airbnb-style holiday lets and a more limited stock of short-term rental apartments are reporting a particularly marked increase in rates during Swift’s visit, with about 30% year-on-year spikes in rental rates in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Milan, according to AirDNA, a data analytics company specialising in the short-term rentals market.

Of all the tour’s European stops, Vienna is experiencing the most notable impact on its rental market, with booking rates for the nights of Swift’s concerts recorded in February 44% higher than at the same point the previous year. By the end of March the number of nights booked in the Austrian capital for the length of Swift’s stay in the second week of August had risen by 430% compared with the same period in 2023.

When Luke Tilden’s wife, Tatjana, suggested last summer that the couple buy their 13- and 15-year-old daughters, Lena and Maya, tickets to a Taylor Swift gig for Christmas, the 53-year-old Briton initially waved it off. “There’s no chance in hell we’d get a ticket without paying through our noses, I thought,” said Tilden, who works as an interpreter at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

But after pre-registering for tickets in London, Paris and Munich, the Tildens got unexpectedly lucky for four tickets in southern Germany and have turned the concert visit into a mini-holiday: “We’ll visit the in-laws in Bavaria, enjoy the countryside, do a bit of hiking.”

The hope in cities across Europe is that this will be replicated on a massive scale, with fans’ excitement translating into generous spending sprees on food, shopping and leisure. In Stockholm, for example, where authorities are expecting 159,000 visitors to arrive from 135 countries in mid-May, the chamber of commerce has forecast a spending boost of €50m. “We hope the whole town will buzz from the Eras tour,” said Tomas Andersson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital’s tourism board.

after newsletter promotion

Whether fans will necessarily act like ordinary tourists, however, is up for debate. “Pop-culture tourists do not necessarily care about traditional buildings and authentic restaurants,” said Maria Lexhagen, a professor at the European Tourism Research Institute, Mid Sweden University.

“Joining up with other fan communities is stronger motivation, as is the idea that they might get closer to the stars themselves. Many of them will map out where Swift is spending her time in the city – they will seek out seemingly marginal but meaningful places like back alleys or coffee shops.” Venues may be hoping for a repeat of Sydney in February, when Swift swept into an unassuming Italian restaurant in the suburbs and sent its name into global media headlines.

A view of the exterior of Pellegrino 2000 in Sydney

In Stockholm the tourism board said it was expecting bookshops and secondhand clothes stores, rather than museums and royal palaces, to attract most of the arriving visitors. Some venues are being proactive: one restaurant within walking distance of the multipurpose Friends Arena in the Solna municipality is putting on a “Taylor Swift brunch experience” with a karaoke stage; the waterfront nightclub Debaser is hosting a pre-concert party on 16 May, an all-ages all-day party with a Swift-themed quiz on 19 May and an afterparty the day after.

Environment

As the Swift circus rolls across the continent, the transport infrastructure of urban centres will also be put to the test. Around the tour’s three-night stop in Dublin at the end of June, Irish Rail has announced additional late-night services to Cork and Limerick to meet an expected increase in demand. Extra tram and bus services are likely to be announced nearer the time.

Unlike rail operators, most airlines do not have capacity to charter additional flights. Due to yield management – airlines adjusting prices based on expected demand – a scramble for airborne journeys into cities that host the Eras tour is more likely to result in more expensive tickets rather than additional flights.

Officials at Lisbon airport said no additional flights had been chartered around Swift’s concerts on 24 and 25 May but that demand would probably be reflected in slightly higher load factors. A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol said general aviation slots could be requested at short notice but nothing out of the ordinary had been logged so far.

Calculating the environmental impact of the tour with any certainty was difficult, experts said. “We can expect that some Swift fans will travel a long way to see one, if not several, shows across Europe”, said Stefan Gössling, a professor of tourism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. “But measuring the environmental impact of these trips is extremely difficult – it would involve a lot of guesswork.”

Swift fans queue to buy a merchandise

This did not mean the carbon footprint was negligible. “Every flight taken by a person adds to demand and hence influences supply considerations,” Gössling said. “The greater the demand, the more aircrafts are in service.”

The pop star’s carbon footprint is easier to estimate. Swift owns two jets by the French manufacturer Dassault, whose journeys are trackable. During the 2023 leg of the Eras tour, Swift’s planes spent 166 hours crisscrossing the US in about 75 individual journeys, though it is possible they were used by people other than the singer.

According to data available through the open-access aviation tracker ADS-B exchange, Swift’s jets caused carbon emissions of about 2,830 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent over the course of the US Eras tour – about 1,700 times the annual contribution of an average person.

A spokesperson for Swift told US media last year that in advance of the tour’s start in March 2023, the pop star bought more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates that allow purchasers to compensate for emissions by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions, though recent studies have questioned the efficacy of these schemes.

Germany’s Leader Walks a Fine Line in China

Chancellor Olaf Scholz tried to promote German business interests while delivering warnings from Europe about trade and geopolitical tensions.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany and Xi Jinping, China’s leader, both in dark suits, stand on a red carpet in front of large Chinese and German flags.

By Alexandra Stevenson and Melissa Eddy

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany tried to strike a delicate balance on a trip to China this week, promoting business ties with his country’s biggest trading partner while raising concerns over its surge of exports to Europe and its support for Russia.

Mr. Scholz met with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Tuesday, the culmination of a three-day visit with a delegation of German officials and business leaders. He also met with Premier Li Qiang as the two countries navigate relations strained by Russia’s war in Ukraine and China’s rivalry with the United States, Germany’s most important ally.

Throughout his trip, Mr. Scholz promoted the interests of German companies that are finding it increasingly hard to compete in China. And he conveyed growing concern in the European Union that the region’s market is becoming a dumping ground for Chinese goods produced at a loss .

But Mr. Scholz chose a conciliatory tone over a combative one in his opening remarks before sitting down with Mr. Xi on Tuesday morning, in a meeting that stretched over three hours and turned into a walk and lunch.

It was the German leader’s first visit to China since his government adopted a strategy last year that defined the Asian power as a “partner, competitor and systemic rival ,” calling on Germany to reduce its dependency on Chinese goods.

Germany’s economy shrank last year, and its weaknesses have exposed a reliance on China for growth. Energy prices have risen because of the war in Ukraine, which has been facilitated by Beijing’s support for the Kremlin. German companies have pushed for more access to China and complained that they face unfair competition .

The chancellor visited German companies with extensive investments in China and met with trade representatives and officials in the sprawling industrial metropolis of Chongqing in China’s southwest and in Shanghai and Beijing.

At a talk with a group of students in Shanghai on Monday, Mr. Scholz fielded a question from a student who planned to study in Germany this year, who said he was “really worried” because the country had partially legalized cannabis. “When you study in Berlin, you can run around the whole time and never meet anyone who does that,” the chancellor assured him.

But he also used the platform to push more serious messages about trade. “Competition must be fair,” Mr. Scholz told the students. “We want a level playing field,” he said.

Mr. Scholz’s trip was an example of the difficult dance that Germany is trying to do: maintaining economic ties with China while managing U.S. pressure to align itself more closely with Washington against Beijing.

In his meetings, Mr. Scholz highlighted Germany’s commitment to doing business with China, but he also warned that Beijing had to curb the flood of Chinese goods into Europe. At the same time, he expressed reservations about the European Union’s investigations into China’s use of subsidies for green technology industries, saying that any discussion about trade must be based on fairness.

“This must be done from a position of self-confident competitiveness and not from protectionist motives,” Mr. Scholz told reporters on Monday.

China’s manufacturing push in green sectors like electric cars and solar panels has touched off trade disputes with Europe and the United States, where such industries have also received government support. But with 5,000 German companies active in the Chinese market, Germany stands to lose more than many of its European partners would if Beijing were to retaliate against the European Union.

“If the E.U. goes too hard against China, we could expect countermeasures and this would be a catastrophe for us,” said Maximilian Butek, the executive director of the German Chamber of Commerce in China.

“For us it’s extremely important that the Chinese market remains open,” he said.

In his meeting with Mr. Xi, Mr. Scholz indicated that Russia’s war on Ukraine and its arms buildup were high on his agenda. “They directly affect our core interests. Indirectly, they damage the entire international order,” he said in opening remarks at the meeting, a transcript of which was provided by Mr. Scholz’s office.

Despite pressing the issue with Mr. Xi, he did not appear to win the commitment that he had sought from the Chinese leader to take part in an international conference for Ukraine planned in June. Germany had hoped that China could use its influence over Russia to help work toward a peace agreement.

Germany would also like China stop selling goods to Russia that have potential uses on the battlefield, and Mr. Scholz told reporters that he had brought up the issue in his meeting. “The point has been made,” he said. “There can be no misunderstanding about how we see things.”

China is hoping to drive a wedge between Europe and the United States by courting leaders such as Mr. Scholz. State media reports depicted his visit as demonstrating the strength of China’s relations with Europe, playing up its economic ties with Germany.

In his opening remarks to Mr. Scholz, Mr. Xi said cooperation between China and Germany, which have the second- and third-largest economies, was beneficial to the world, a remark that could be read as directed at those who have urged Berlin to distance itself from Beijing.

“The two countries should view and develop bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective and work together to inject more stability and certainty into the world,” Mr. Xi told Mr. Scholz, emphasizing the importance of seeking “common ground.”

Beijing is sure to welcome the message that German businesses are committed to China. The Asian giant is trying to court foreign investment to reinvigorate its economy, which has faltered because of a housing slowdown. Some Western businesses and investors have also been rattled by Mr. Xi’s emphasis on national security, which they regard as making it riskier to operate in the country.

From China’s perspective, Germany may be its best hope of delaying or watering down any trade restrictions from Europe, said Noah Barkin, a senior adviser in the China practice at the Rhodium Group, a research firm.

German carmakers have invested billions of dollars in China, and much of their revenue comes from there. Many worry that if the European Commission imposes higher tariffs on Chinese exports, and Beijing retaliates, German businesses will suffer most.

Chinese officials “know that German companies are heavily invested and they use that politically to influence political decision making in Berlin,” Mr. Barkin said.

Germany’s biggest companies, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and BASF, have large operations in China and strong, effective lobbies in Berlin, Mr. Barkin added. Executives from those companies, along with several others, traveled with Mr. Scholz to China.

“The supply chain in China is stuffed with German goods,” said Joerg Wuttke, a former president of the E.U. Chamber of Commerce in China. “If China has a price war with Germany, then no one will make money anymore.”

Mr. Scholz also brought along the German ministers for agriculture, the environment and transportation, officials who experts said would be particularly interested in working with China.

“You set an agenda with these three ministers, the tonality is overall a cooperative one, these are areas that we want to work on,” said Janka Oertel, director of the Asia Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Chinese officials, for their part, have brushed off the European accusations of unfair trading practices, calling them groundless and an act of “ typical protectionism .” They have hinted that they could retaliate for any actions taken by the European Union, saying that China was “strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes” its investigations.

In an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Wu Ken, China’s ambassador to Germany, said the competitive edge of Chinese electric vehicles “relies on innovation, not subsidies.”

“The challenge faced by developed countries lies more in the fact that Chinese companies are more efficient,” the ambassador said.
