This is neither a Tour de France caliber road bike nor fit for the Olympics or world cycling championship. No! It, however, gives you an actual feeling of what it’s like gracing such competitions.

So, if you are looking to get into serious road racing or road touring and want an ideal introductory road bike, you should get Domane AL2.

The bike is perfect for all genders, and as you’ll learn later under the sizing, it’s available in multiple frame sizes to suit riders between 152cm and 195cm.

Here are specifications that come with Domane AL2:

1. 100 Series Alpha Aluminum Frame with an Endurance Geometry

Domane AL2 comes with a 100 series alpha aluminum frame, which is super lightweight. Being lightweight makes the frame comfortable for racing with and decently quick.

It, however, combines better with the bike’s endurance geometry, which offers you a more relaxed feel. An endurance geometry is not aggressive, which means it’s gentle on your back. It also promises more stability and decent stiffness.

The geometry puts you in a race-ready position without necessarily sacrificing your comfort. More importantly, it promises a more comfortable standover height.

2. 16-Speed Shimano Claris Drivetrain

Trek employs the Claris groupset in this road bike, irrefutably the lowest-ranked groupset on the Shimano hierarchy. But even so, Claris is a decent performer and generally suits entry-level bikers.

Claris can serve you for a long time if well maintained, but you also have the option of upgrading to a higher-ranked groupset like Tiagra.

In terms of shifters, the bike comes with an 8-speed Shimano Claris R200 shifter and features eight speeds on its rear cassette and a double ring on its front cassette, giving you a total of 16 speeds.

Overall, its 16 gears offer you enough gear power to ride fast and take on an array of road surfaces, including hills.

3. IsoSpeed Fork

IsoSpeed is Trek’s innovative road bike suspension technology that promotes a smooth ride and boosts the headset’s stiffness and endurance. Luckily for Domane AL2, the bike’s carbon fork employs IsoSpeed to smoothen and tune your ride to suit your comfort needs.

Domane AL2 comes with standard 700cc road bike wheels with a 28c tire clearance. So, the wheels are generally slimmer, and that makes them fast. Its wheels feature Bontrager tubeless-ready 24-hole rims and Bontrager R1 Hardcase Lite tires.

The rims are strong enough, owing to their 24 spokes, while the tires are tough-built, thanks to their wire-bread profile and wear-resistant hard casing.

5. Frame Technologies

Domane AL2 specifically employs Blendr Stem technology, and it’s compatible with Dual Trap S digital-sensing technology.

Blendr Stem is a bike stem technology that lets you clip several accessories on the bike stem. That includes a bell, cycling computer, navigation system, bike light, and phone holder.

Not only does Blendr allow you to hook all these attachments, but it makes them easily accessible and gives your bike front a cleaner look.

It’s also thanks to Blendr that you can use Domane AL2 for short tours and running errands.

6. Dual-Pivot Brakes

Domane AL2 has dual-pivot brakes, which are slightly low-end than disc brakes but decent performers. Dual pivot brakes are a combination of side-pull and mid-pull brakes, which means a more decisive stopping power than what you get from single-pivot braes.  

They also offer you good bike control. The only downside is that they are not the most responsive in wet conditions. If you want all-weather brakes, then go for disc brakes, and that’s where the Trek Domane AL2 Disc comes in.

So, if you are an elite road cyclist or are planning to compete at a major event, Domane AL2 is not worth it. But if you are an entry-level road racer, an intermediate, or just a casual biker who wants a mid-range bike for short tours, this bike is worth it.

Trek is the biggest bike company in the USA right now.  So, you probably have a bike shop that sells Treks not too far away.  They make high-quality bikes, and the shop will make sure it is tuned properly. 

Which entry level road bike should I pick for 2022?

I’ve scoured through the different options at Trek, and I think the Domane AL 2 Disc is the best option.  It’s not cheap at a list price of $1,199.99, but for your money I think it has the right options.  The lower priced Domane AL 2 doesn’t have disc brakes and will only fit up to 28c tires without fenders.  The AL 2 Disc will fit up to 35c without fenders.  This adds a lot of versatility to the bike.

Carbon Fork – carbon fork with a thru axle, very cool.  Will help absorb some road bumps.

Disc brakes – lotta cool factor with disc brakes.  You might not need them, but they say modern.

2X drivetrain – I like a double on a road bike.  Use the big ring unless you are climbing, then switch to the small ring.  16 speeds will work nicely.

3 colors and lots of sizes – Blue, black, and red should provide a color for just about everyone.  Lots of sizes mean you will get on the right size bike which is important for fit.  

700×32 Bontrager R1 tires – really nice size tire.  They will be fast, but still absorb lots of bumps.

Internal cable routing – real smooth look with the cables routing inside the frame.

Mounts for rack and fenders – make the bike more versatile.

Endurance geometry – comfortably ride long distances.  And with Trek you know that the geometry is really well done. 

Price – big investment to get into road cycling.  But a Trek bike will be high quality and a great way to go if you want to ride without issues.  The bike shop should take real good care of you also.

Drivetrain – at this price point I’d like to see Sora, but with tariffs and all the inflation right now, bike prices have really climbed.  The Shimano Claris R2000 components are really reliable, however.  For almost $200 more you can get Sora with the AL 3 Disc.  A good upgrade but getting really expensive for an entry level road bike.

Note – this is a hands-off review.  I’m just using my bike knowledge and looking at the specs to give you an idea which model would best suite you for the money.  This is my pick from Trek, I’ll look at some other brands in the future and rank them.

There’s no question the Sora upgrade is worth every penny at $200. If it was up to me, and I own a Sora gravel bike, I’d go for 105 minimum. Worth it.

105 is great stuff, but I wouldn’t call it entry level.

Question- I need to tighten the handlebars on my bike. What kind and size of wrench would I need to do that? It’s a simple Huffy bike.

Most likely an allen wrench. In what way are they loose?

When I push on the handlebar, it gives way.

Are the bars attached with 4 allen bolts?

No just one bolt in the middle of the handlebar . It’s a huffy style.

Very nice! Maybe someday I will invest in a new bike. Mine is tried and true, but quite dated.

The Domane AL 2 is a good bike for those looking for an introduction to competitive road racing. It may not have all the bells and whistles of an expensive road bike but provides everything needed to put some serious hours in on the tarmac.

You’ll struggle to find a road bike under $1,000 that comes equipped with the same quality parts and advanced frame geometry.

DuoTrap S Compatibility

The Bontrager DuoTrap S digital sensor is a nifty tool that can be attached to compatible Trek bicycles for measuring cycling data. Rather than messy, makeshift zip ties, the DuoTrap S screws securely onto the frame and transmits data wirelessly to your phone or bicycle computer.

You can use the DuoTrap’s combined ANT+ 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth signals to simultaneously send data to both your phone and a Trip 300 cycling computer. The sensor is concealed neatly on the inside of your chainstay to maintain a clean appearance and aerodynamic functionality.

The Trek Domane AL 2 features a stem that is compatible with the Blendr integration system for cycling accessories. It allows for the easy attachment of various holders for lights, computers, phone holders, and navigation systems.

When you add the lightweight carbon fork and high-quality finishing touches, you have a bike that would be difficult to beat for around $1,000. If you can afford the extra cash for the Domane AL3 and want slightly better parts, go for it. But if you want value for money, with the Domane AL 2, you certainly can’t go wrong.

Introduction.

I’m back with another cycling-related blog post and this time I’m reviewing my very own road bike, the Trek Domane AL2.

I purchased this bike in early 2020 and have had the pleasure of riding 1000’s of miles on it through some of the most scenic routes in mid-Wales . I wanted to share my experiences of riding this bike with you so you can read an honest review which may help you decide whether this bike could be the one for you.

At the time of purchase, this was the very first road bike I’d ever purchased as I’d been predominantly into off-road riding up to that time, although I did have a hybrid which I used for some road cycling.

The Covid pandemic changed everything in the world of cycling; for the first time ever the roads we clear, the weather was superb and the days were long with plenty of time to get on the open road – what better opportunity to rack up the miles on the road bike, especially with many other sports out of the question due to the rules at the time.

Features of the Trek Domane AL 2

Here are what I consider to be the most important features of the Trek Domane AL 2:

In my experience of owning this bike for a number of years, the components have mostly all been great. Here is a breakdown of what I’ve experienced so far:

Frame: As expected, no issues whatsoever and still to this day after many hours of riding, even through the testing Welsh weather it is still looking great, albeit with a few scratches.

Weight and weight limits: The Trek Domane AL2 feels light compared to all the other bikes I’ve ever ridden and this definitely shows on some of the local climbs.

Brakes: The brakes are still performing brilliantly and offer great reliability in all conditions.

Handlebar tape: This was one aspect that I found slightly disappointing with the bike, after not so much riding I had to change the handlebar tape as it had become loose.

Tyres: Great tyres which have offered solid performance across many roads, steep climbs and fast descents.

Chain and cassette: The Trek Domane AL 2 has offered some of the smoothest shifting I’ve ever experienced and still continues to do so to this day.

Some of the great things I’ve found about the Trek Domane AL 2

So, what have I found to be some of the best features of the Trek Domane AL 2?

Having a predominantly mountain biking background where you are sat in a more upright position, I was worried about the switch to the different posture needed for road cycling.

Whilst it did take some getting used to, the geometry of the Trek Domane AL 2 has offered comfort on rides.

I think the Trek Domane AL 2 was a great purchase for the price I paid for it, and even to this day it is still a fantastic price when you consider the amount of price rises in recent times.

I often like to track value for money against the amount of miles I complete in a year – this year I’ve managed a lower total of around 1200, but that still makes the cost less than £1 a mile!

Reliability

The Trek Domane AL 2 has never let me down. From short rides of under 10 miles to long rides of over 50 miles this bike has always delivered amazing performance and I’ve never had to worry about whether I’ll make it home.

DuoTrap S compatibility

Although I’ve never taken advantage of this feature you are able to connect a Bluetooth speed and cadence sensor to track performance via a compatible device. I had something similar on an old hybrid bike which I used to use for Zwifting and these are a good option if you are looking to track performance.

Low servicing need

After all the miles I’ve completed on this bike I’ve only taken it back to the bike shop for one full service. I think this shows how well the bike is put together and designed to cope with high mileage.

Additional features of the Trek Domane AL 2

There are a couple of additional features on the Trek Domane AL 2 which can be utilised if needed:

  • The bike arrives without pedals as standard giving you the freedom to choose which pedals best suit your style.
  • The Trek is built with long-distance and comfort in mind meaning you can be sure to feel as comfortable at the end of a long ride as you did at the start.
  • There is also options to add additional items such as mud guards and saddle bags.

Current cost of the Trek Domane AL 2 Gen 3

Not that I’m in the market for another road bike at the moment, but the Trek Domane AL 2 Gen 3 is currently priced at around £900, which I think makes it excellent value for money.

You’d be able to pick up an older model or second hand Trek Domane for much less than this, and providing the second hand model is in good condition you can expect hours of cycling enjoyment.

Does it look good?

Take a look at my pictures below and make up your own mind, but I think the model I chose looks fantastic, and I’ve had quite a few compliments over the years on how good it looks. I personally love the colours but I did remove the orange reflectors!

  • Budget friendly – a great value bike for anyone, but especially for those looking to get into road cycling
  • A very reliable bike which will enable you to complete many worry-free miles
  • The Trek Domane has good geometry for a comfortable ride.
  • My Trek Domane has been super reliable and has needed very little servicing since new.
  • 125kg weight limit could be problematic if you plan to attach heavy baggage to the bike for touring rides.
  • The rider can feel some vibrations through the handlebars on bumpier ground.
  • Only suitable on road surfaces.

Final rating and conclusion

I’m giving the Trek Domane AL 2 a solid 4.5/5 final rating as this bike has performed solidly for many miles, across a variety of different mid-Wales courses.

For those who are on a budget or looking to get into road cycling, choosing the Trek Domane AL 2 would be a wise choice as it will offer reliability, comfort as well as speed, a bike that is suited to climbing and options for modifying to suit the riders needs.

I haven’t regretted purchasing my Trek Domane AL 2 at all and I’m looking forward to many more miles, once the weather has improved a little bit – in the meantime I’ll head back to Zwift!

The class-leading Domane has always been the wild child in Trek’s triumvirate of road bikes whose names are all anagrams of each other. Shortlisted for our 2022 Budget Bike of the Year award, the AL 2 offers impressive handling and spec at an entry-level price. Forever searching for alternate lines, not phased by rough surfaces, and with the ability to conquer almost anything, the Domane was one of the first really effective endurance bikes. Far from the World Tour’s Paris-Roubaix winning rigs, this Domane AL 2 promises elements of those bikes’ performance at a very realistic price. Is it just marketing, or does it really work? Shimano’s 8-speed Claris groupset is deployed to keep the cost down. The Domane AL 2’s frame is built from Trek’s 100 Series aluminium tubes, which include some hydroformed profiles. It’s Trek’s lowest grade of aluminium tube, as you’d expect on an entry-level road bike, but shows obvious design care, and is welded neatly throughout.

The IsoSpeed carbon fork is designed to absorb a lot of road vibration up front, with a 27.2mm alloy seatpost and well-padded saddle at the rear. To keep costs low, Trek fitted Shimano’s 8-speed Claris groupset, although the double chainset is substituted with a non-series RS200 item, and the brakes with some unbranded Lee Chi alloy dual-pivot calipers. The 3T Exploro RaceMax alloy handlebar and stem are from Bontrager, as are the TLR wheels and tyres. The 27.2mm Bontrager post is coupled with a nicely padded Bontrager P3 Verse Comp saddle. The Domane follows the evolved geometry trend for endurance bikes, which is that of slightly relaxed race machines. The head angle on my 54cm example is 71.3 degrees, with a 73.7-degree seat angle. Head tube length is kept to a sporty 16cm, while the effective top tube length is 54.2cm. The chainstays are 42cm, the wheelbase 101cm, and bottom-bracket drop is a stability-inducing 8cm, which all suggests that the Domane AL 2 has the essential qualities to calm stormy tarmac.

The handlebar is Bontrager’s compact alloy Comp VR-C. An endurance bike is intended for all road types, although predominantly tarmac. With countless miles of roads and lanes to hand, where smooth surfaces were definitely the exception, I aimed the Domane at many of my tried-and-tested training routes. I inflated the 25mm tyres to 75-80psi, which usually works well for my 78kg, and took in every sort of climb, slog and drag I could, as well as plenty of technical corners. Trek has designed the Domane to fit most riders, whether they prefer to get long and low, or ride in a more commanding position. Since testing the very first Domane to arrive in the UK, I’ve always found them to be an ideal fit, straight out of the box. So it proved here, with all positional options easily achievable. Unlike its loftier brethren, and particularly the carbon Domane range, the Domane AL 2 can only count on an IsoSpeed fork to help quell roughness.

The aluminium frame, although nicely constructed, has no elements that are designed to offer any IsoSpeed-like benefits. Instead, the rear of the bike relies on the classic 27.2mm alloy seatpost and a very plush saddle. The air volume of the 25mm tyres, which measure 27.5mm wide, helps further. Up front, Bontrager’s alloy Comp VR-C handlebar and Elite stem are fairly standard fare, with a tough black finish and rounded drops. The Alchemy LYCOS Au head tube mimics the shaping of the carbon Domane, and is satisfyingly, organically chunky. All of the cables are routed externally, running beneath the down tube, and the rear brake cable angles pleasingly across beneath the flattened top tube from right to left, which gives it an ideal route from the left brake lever.

All cables are routed externally. Casting an eye over the AL 2 exposes the groupset shortcuts, which help keep costs down. The non-series RS200 chainset is pretty basic, and spins on a UN300 cartridge bottom bracket, with square tapered axle ends. These are simple fit-and-forget items that can provide decent service, but their bearings are well inside the bottom bracket shell, and this narrow arrangement makes them prone to lateral play sooner than bottom brackets with more widely spaced bearings positioned on each side of the shell. The Domane’s plain black dual-pivot rim brake calipers aren’t named on Trek’s component spec, but a check of the spare parts list shows them to be Lee Chi items. From the lever, their action feels quite lively, but whatever Trek has used for the Alchemy LYCOS SRAM brake pads seems to be allergic to alloy rims, as they have no bite, just a very wooden feel with no pad compression or the ability to increase pressure and stop faster. I didn’t get the chance to ride them in the wet, but I doubt that would improve their performance. Swapping the brakes would have been very easy and inexpensive, and it’s a shame Trek didn’t do exactly that. In the very comfortable saddle, the Domane AL 2 showcases its bump-smoothing ability. Like oil calming a rough sea, it glides along, seemingly rolling across the surface.

The dual-pivot rim brakes did not impress during testing. If I was riding on 32mm or larger tyres at lower pressures, it would be easier to understand, but these are 25mm at normal road pressure. The higher-specced carbon Domanes amplify this effect much further, but finding this ride quality on an entry-level machine is impressive. Anyone expecting a choppy ride on a budget aluminium frame will be blown away by the Domane AL 2. Where the tarmac’s top surface coating has worn away, leaving uneven patches, or when it looks more washboard than A-road, the Domane rounds off the sharpness of the expected impact, keeping everything well under control.

The Shimano Claris levers have a very familiar feel, and are about as comfortable as most Shimano levers. Their shifting, across an eight-speed cassette, has less finesse than Shimano’s 10, 11 and 12-speed groupsets, but is still quite swift. One downside of only having eight sprockets is larger jumps between some gears, which is inevitable with their 11-32 range. The front shifting performance is acceptable – it mainly does the job reliably, but occasionally needs a little coaxing not to get stuck mid-shift.

The 3T Exploro RaceMAX gearing range is ideal for the Domane’s expected use, with a 50/34 compact chainset mated to that 11-32 cassette. Almost 1:1 low gearing on a reasonably swift road bike is quite generous, and 50×11 is big enough for most scenarios. That relaxing ride quality translates to handling fun. It gives great confidence when cornering, descending and changing line to avoid obstructions. The Domane feels utterly stable, encouraging you to push a little harder, and the Bontrager tyres grip very well. With a helpful breeze and friendly gradient, the Trek can really fly, but when the tables are turned, the Bontrager TLR wheelset shows its limitations.

On short drags, where I’m usually able to carry speed, until needing to stand up and power over the top, I found my approach speed was slower, and I’d have to change at least one gear before slogging over the crest. They’re solid wheels that can be converted to tubeless for some puncture protection, but trying to muster a town sign sprint requires far more power than it should, and the resultant speed is underwhelming. With mounts for full mudguards and a rear rack, this Domane could make an ideal winter bike  or quick commuter, and there’s enough room for at least a 28mm tyre without mudguards.

The AL 2 is a good bike at a sensible price. A few choice upgrades would make it even better. Trek’s Domane AL2 has a lot to offer, especially at this price. Its tidy frame and vibe-eating fork are a sound basis for a good bike, which overall the Trek is. The groupset does its job well, but the non-series chainset and narrow cartridge bottom bracket let the side down, with some iffy shifts and axle deflection. And the less said about those rim brakes, the better. The ride quality from 25mm tyres is impressive, and increasing volume would add comfort and a little grip. Adding speed would require a wheel upgrade, which is quite straightforward, but not essential.

Introduction

If you know Trek, the trophy winning race brand, then you must have heard of the Domane line. When you can’t clearly define this Trek Domane AL 2, then I’ll tell you it has puncture-resistant Bontrager on a $1129 frame, 60 tpi, 700x28c tires, Shimano drivetrain, and snappier alloy dual crank braking technology.

And all models come with size-specific components, which means that whether you’re short or tall, female or male. You can take the Domane AL on a ride that will take you on years of adventure. The 100 series alpha aluminum frame with exclusive Iso speed damping technology can support you to ride farther than ever before and embark on countless exciting trips!

Road Riding

2023 Trek Domane AL 2

I know that most of us who want to buy a Domane are not born adventurers. Because they just want to experience the fun in the most comfortable ride possible. Then when I straddled this Domane with its steep 73.3° seat tube angle, I thought it was perfect for most newbies to try a ride. The stance is upright enough to take you to the park and the lake without you even knowing it.

And you don’t need to worry about falling behind. The 700x28c Bontrager wheelset can break the wind and reduce enough air resistance. Compared to models that like to get fancy with the size of their wheelsets, such as the Marin DSX 2’s wide 700x45c wheelset, it can accommodate riding fast acceleration.

As I pedaled rhythmically to a section of cobblestone pavement around a park lake, the frequent shaking of the pavement would maximize Domane’s shock absorption. But for the sake of authenticity, I took on the challenge. Obviously, the ISO speed system is the best answer to this kind of terrain. And the Domane is a perfect balance of comfort and rigidity.

With friends

Also, since I was with my friend Alice on this trip, she was riding a Domane AL Women’s series. Since she is more focused on city commuting, I also noticed that she assembled the fenders and rear rack. And it was quite surprising to me as well. In addition, I found that although the size of each Domane component is said to support shopping according to your figure. So girls are more recommended to choose the Women’s Pro version.

After I compared it with the regular model, I found that there are differences in the length of the crank, cushion, and handle length. So if you as a woman want to start trying Domane, all the more reason to try it.

Endurance Riding

For my test of endurance riding, I chose the longer distance of the classical track. Those who are familiar with this kind of track know that cobblestones, traps, and slabs are its characteristics. Accordingly, those who have ridden road bikes know that this kind of road has high demands on the vibration filtering of vehicles. Because the high-frequency vibration will destroy the will and physical strength of the rider.

On previous rides, I have tested the performance of the Jetdefy models on this ride. Overall I was not as impressed as I was with the Domane. Because 100 series Alpha aluminum is aggressive against friction and UV rays for long rides.

In addition, the 700x28c Bontrager tire combination 61mm of trail can quickly skim over the ground protrusions. Compared to wider tires, it will also be more agile and not as firmly picking up the ground as wider tires.

And in this aspect of damping, Trek made some tricks. Iso speed damping device is placed at the head tube, wrist group. And handlebar of the frame, moving back and forth to offset the vibration, so I think this is the ingenuity of other models can not reach.

I was tired of the long stretch of gravel road, after my nearly 1h road ride. However, I found a gravel section of road in front of me and a hilly form. And the Shimano 2×8 drivetrain was helpful for some uphill stretches of about 5% upwards. Because the richer range of speed regulation does not make me give more physical input.

At the beginning of my ride, I was well prepared with Domane’s support. Indeed, Bontrager Elite stem compatible with duotraps installed Bluetooth speed and cadence sensors can connect to my phone and track my riding goals. Additionally, it equipped with various types of mounting brackets, so I prepared three water bottles to effectively reduce my energy loss.

Main Features

Visually, the seamlessly finished 100 series alpha aluminum body uses the Trek’s endurance geometry, thus keeping the ride stable and the posture optimal for long rides. For outdoor riding, I think it is more expensive than maintenance carbon friction resistance.

Once you’ve seen this Domane, I’m sure you’ll be impressed with its oversized head tube. But in terms of riding feel, it greatly improves the stiffness of the front end for precise handling, which is necessary for handling bumpy roads. And all Domane models are paired with specific size components, such as stem, handlebars, and crank length, which are necessary for people of different sizes.

Of course, the detailing is done with a neater internal alignment. In terms of color treatment, I prefer its gloss mulsanne blue, although it still retains trek’s usual understated style.

In terms of riding comfort the 73.7° seat tube angle is very steep, which means you’re riding closer to upright. And when you do get on the bike you’ll find that it pedals more efficiently, which is necessary for endurance riding. In addition, the 71.3° head tube angle makes for more responsive steering and a sharper ride.

But the longer wheelbase (61mm) won’t let you lose control of the bike in the process. In addition, the lower BB position (25.8cm) closer to the handlebars (70mm) allows for a lower center of gravity when riding, making it easier for you to get your bearings when riding.

Don’t underestimate the changes in geometry, these changes will make you more comfortable when dealing with bad roads.

Components and Specifications

If the bike does not ride close to the ground, the harder you pedal the higher and shakier it will bounce. Your direction of travel is not forward, but up and down, shaking violently. That’s why it became one of the tasks of the top road bike brands to create a comfortable bike for the classics, and the answer that Trek engineers delivered was Domane.

Incorporating lasting comfort into the Madone is their approach. Unlike most top bike brands, Trek doesn’t pin all their filtering on materials and shapes. Their secret lies more in the Iso speed system. Accordingly, this is as important as the air pressure adjustment of the fork and rear guts of a mountain bike and is extremely effective in increasing compliance and achieving a smoother ride. According to the official statement, the Iso speed system can improve damping by 10% without sacrificing body control.

Shimano Claris 2×8 Drivetrain

Nowadays, many people I know prefer 1× drivetrain. But I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the Shimano 105 HG700 2×11 drivetrain.

Thanks to its wide range of shifting options, it helped me save a lot of energy on my long rides. However, I must be honest and say that the chain started to wobble a bit during the speed change.

Of course, this didn’t happen after I made some simple adjustments, and its shifting may not be as smooth and clean as the 1× drivetrain. But it must be admitted that at this price, the Shimano 105 HG700 2×11 drivetrain is praiseworthy.

If you see Domane at first glance, you will surely be attracted by its sharp and efficient 700x28c figure. Thanks to the good handling of air resistance, you don’t need to worry about putting yourself behind in some racing courses. And due to the nature of the vacuum state, plus the density of 60tpi.

So when you ride outdoors, you don’t need to worry about the risk of a flat tire when you encounter harsher conditions, and the wear and tear will be minimized.

It also does a great job of absorbing vibration and weight. This is very friendly for us to face some more rapid steering. Thinking back to our daily travels through the city, it’s a shame we can’t have such an efficient bike.

And as a simple fitness need, I think with the addition of $1129 this is certainly enough.

Other Versions Of Domane AL

2023 Trek Domane AL 2 Disc

For the Domane AL series, unlike the rim brakes of the Domane AL 2, the most prominent feature of the AL 2 Disc is the mechanical braking. Logically, the weight is increased to 10.8 kg and we can see that, unlike the AL’s sharp 28c wheelset, the tires of the AL 2 disc reach a width of 35c.

This means that when facing some of the looser gravel roads, it will behave more adaptable than the AL 2, with a more aggressive grip and friction. Also, if you’ve noticed the drivetrain, both have chosen Shimano 2×8 components, and the two are tied in terms of richness of speed regulation.

But from my testing on smooth-rising forest roads, I would say the AL 2 is better in terms of speed due to its more aggressive handling of air resistance. But if faced with a more obstructed surface, the competition could be reversed.

I have to commend the Women’s line of Domane AL 2’s for being close to identical in performance on several components. They both carry a 700x28c wheelset that handles air resistance all very aggressively. And in the drivetrain, it is also used Shimano 2×8 drivetrain. In addition, even the brakes are used rim brakes, so the weight is less than 10kg. However, we cannot ignore some key geometric values.

Compared to the AL 2 regular version, the 74.2° seat tube puts you in a position closer to upright so the ride will be more comfortable. In addition, the BB height(256mm) is lower, which is more friendly for women.

And for the wheelbase, the AL 2 Women’s is more compact, which will be more suitable for women to control the front end. As I’ve always stressed, although Domane components are available in a variety of sizes, the Pro version can be said to be a must for female test rides, and you can clearly feel its friendliness to female riders.

What do we like about it?

  • The rim brakes are more retro than the more expensive hydraulic brakes.

When I gathered my eyes on the Giant Contend AR 3, which is priced at the same level, I could feel that for the components, the Contend AR is more in the middle of the pack.

Riding on wider 32c tires, it handles the road solidly and will lag behind the Domane AL2 with narrower 28c tires in terms of acceleration. But the drivetrain options are more extensive, with a 2×9 drivetrain. In addition, the mechanical discs that will be heavier in weight are chosen for the brakes. Although the braking effect is similar between the two in normal driving, the Shimano Sora mechanical disc brakes are more moderate.

For the external frame, I trust Trek Domane’s 100 series alpha aluminum, which is lighter and more robust than the Giant Contend AR 3. In addition, for the front fork, Trek Domane’s carbon IsoSpeed fork is a winner, more efficient, smoother, and more creative.

Masi Vincere Tiagra vs Trek Domane AL 2

For the Masi Vincere Tiagra, which is close to the same performance in terms of components and even richer in terms of drivetrain. But I think it is slightly inferior to the Trek Domane AL 2 in terms of riding experience. Despite the Shimano 2×10 drivetrain, and 700x30c wheelset, the brakes are moderate with the  Shimano mechanical disc brake. However, from my actual review, I have to admit that with the small differences in components. The key geometry values that affect the ride are not so perfect.

First of all, the 73° seat tube angle is inferior to that of the Domane in terms of riding endurance. And it is not possible to achieve Domane’s uprightness in posture. In addition, if you look closely at the bodywork, you will see that the Domane with its longer wheelbase of 1,018mm will be more spacious and therefore more aggressive in the face of some damping. Not to mention his exclusive Iso speed damping fork for more damping support.

Fuji Gran Fondo Classico 1.1 vs Trek Domane AL 2

When faced with the carbon body of the Fuji Gran Fondo Classico, the scales were already tipped in my favor. But when I rode the Domane, I think the Domane with more component sizes is more user-friendly and more in line with the human body structure. From the analysis of the data, the 100 series alpha aluminum is not inferior to the carbon. And the price is more friendly.

In addition, the Domane is also at a disadvantage in the face of a richer drivetrain. But it makes up for the faster pedaling with the support of a 28c wheelset. And I prefer the Iso speed damping fork, I think only by incorporating more technology can the performance upgrade be truly meaningful. If you notice the braking, both two are used rim brackes. So it’s a tie between the two in this aspect.

All told, the Fuji Gran Fondo Classico has a slight edge in terms of component richness. However, from a professional evaluation point of view, the more user-friendly and technology-supported Trek Domane AL 2 with a more friendly price would be a good choice.

Facing the Fuji Jari 2.5 with a consistent drivetrain range, I think its wider 37c tires caused a drag on speed compared to the Domane.

And from the feeling of riding, only Domane more component sizes are designed to face riders of different sizes when facing more people. This will give you a lot of help for long endurance rides.

If you remember from the previous article, I have nothing but praise for trek’s exclusive Iso speed damping. Only a Domane that incorporates more technology can handle the bumpier trails on endurance races more efficiently. Although the Fuji Jari 2.5 will be slightly less expensive than the Domane, I think the Domane will have a slight edge in terms of long-term riding.

The Trek Domane serves as the entry point not only to Trek’s road bike lineup for many but also to road cycling as a whole. Many of these cyclists will go with the Trek Domane AL a road bike that has to wear many hats. Some want it to be a swift recreational ride. Others want it as a potential commuter. Somehow, the Domane AL has managed to competently do both. 

As versatile a package as the previous Domane AL disc was, this latest fourth-generation Domane AL can realistically serve as someone’s gravel bike now, with some caveats.

As such, the Domane AL (pronounced ‘dough-MA-knee’) has been updated to offer even more options for the prospective cyclist who is looking for one bike to be both a road bike and a gravel bike.

Trek Domane AL updates

The updated Trek Domane AL is built with Trek’s Alpha 100-series aluminum. There isn’t much to it: standard alloy tubes, plain welds, and all of that. Despite the lack of serious tube shaping, there is a passing semblance between this bike and the Domane SL carbon bike I’ve ridden as well as the high-end Domane SLR road bike . Paired with that is a new full-carbon fork that offers loads of tire clearance.

Trek claims the updated Domane AL frame and fork is around a half pound lighter (approx 225 grams) than the previous Domane AL Disc.

The Domane AL is updated to include internal cable routing from the headset down to clean up the cables. While this looks clean and it works well for the most part, replacing shift housing and fixing hydraulic brake lines will likely be a more expensive proposition when compared to the previous-generation Domane AL Disc.

There’s a standard 27.2 mm seat post and English threaded bottom bracket like before, but the bottom bracket area is updated to include a chain catcher that’s integrated into the frame. Additionally, the Domane AL features a rack mount at the rear for commuting. Fender mounts there to keep you dry on your ride, with the rear featuring a removable seat stay bridge too.

The Domane Al receives a Sram Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH). While the UDH spec makes finding a new derailleur hanger an inexpensive and simple proposition, the Domane AL is also one of the first road bikes I’ve seen with it.

And perhaps most interestingly, the price of the Domane AL has gone down, at least in the U.S. Our Domane AL 4 shown here is $100 US cheaper than previously. Prices in other markets remain consistent.

Can a Trek Domane AL be a gravel bike? Mostly, yes

The updated feature set comes with Trek’s eyes set not only on the road but for gravel too. Official tire clearance is for 700c x 38 mm tires, but the Domane AL fits 40 mm knobby gravel tires front and rear without an issue. More importantly, the tires cleared the Shimano Tiagra front derailleur, meaning you won’t have to swap a front derailleur and crankset to have proper tire clearance with a gravel tire.

Further, the bottom bracket bottle cage mount and the top tube bag mount are distinct features once reserved for gravel bikes.

Trek has also updated the Domane AL with new handlebars. While Trek hesitates to call them flared handlebars, the bars do flare out to be wider in the drops than at the brake levers. My size 52 cm bike featured bars with a 40 mm width at the tops, but a 44 cm width at the drops. 

Is a handlebar a big deal in the grand scheme of things? No, but it goes a long way toward right-sizing handlebars for cyclists. Further, the wider drops offer a sense of greater control while in the drops. That’s huge for anyone, and good to see Trek thinking about that at this price point.

Importantly, this added capability makes the Trek Domane AL a worthwhile choice for someone looking to dabble in both road bike and gravel bikes. While the bike is still a road bike at heart, its features make it capable enough to ride lighter gravel frequently.

The Domane AL geometry hasn’t changed compared to the previous generation, but that’s not a bad thing. The Domane might just be the poster child of an upright road bike, with geometry that always leans on the upright as opposed to aggressive scale.

Further, the slack head angle, longer fork offset, 420 mm chainstays, and low 80 mm bottom bracket drop across sizes further lean into the bike’s mission of being approachable for riding long distances.

One thing to note is that the bike’s handling isn’t languid or sluggish: rather, the trail figures here indicate a bike that turns won’t quite feel like a boat on the road.

Riding the Trek Domane AL

My bike is essentially a Trek Domane AL 4. It features a Shimano Tiagra 10-speed drivetrain with hydraulic disc brakes. The rest of the build comes from Bontrager: Paradigm SL wheels, a Verse Comp saddle, and R1 Hardcase Lite tires in a 32 mm width.

My size 52 cm Trek Domane AL 4 weighed in at 22.27 pounds (10.1 kg) set up with tubes in the tires.

The updated Domane AL is exactly what you’d expect from the Domane lineup: comfort-first body positioning and predictable handling. Part of that comes down to the low bottom bracket; the 80 mm bottom bracket drop on my bike brings the center of gravity ever so slightly lower. Doing so makes the bike feel more stable and confidence-inspiring through the corners, at least theoretically. 

In reality, that low bottom bracket and the 32 mm tires as this bike was built make the bike feel really stable through corners. There’s plenty of grip, sure, but the confidence makes you feel willing to push the bike further on the road.

On gravel? The Domane AL rides along without complaint. The low bottom bracket offers good stability riding through chunk even with 40 mm tires. And while the trail figures are a little quicker than an average gravel bike at this price point, it feels quick and sporty on gravel. It would be an easy choice to ride on smooth gravel at events like SBT, but probably not the right bike for an event like Unbound. 

The Trek Domane AL 4 features a Shimano Tiagra 10-speed drivetrain with hydraulic brakes. While the groupset isn’t especially lightweight, the shifts are consistently crisp. Further, the braking is strong, consistent, and a worthwhile upgrade over most mechanical disc brakes. 

Trek’s in-house component line, Bontrager, fills in the rest of the gaps here. The wheelset rode along without complaint, and its tubeless-ready profile makes it an easy wheelset to hold onto in the future. They are heavy wheels, however, weighing in at 2130 grams without tires.

While the Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite 32 mm tires are known to be hard-wearing and durable, they aren’t quick-rolling. They’re heavy too; swapping them for a set of 32 mm Teravail Telegraph tires made the bike feel noticeably more spry. Ride through them if you’d like, but swapping these tires is an easy upgrade to the Domane AL’s overall ride.

I would’ve liked to see Centerlock compatible hubs here rather than 6-bolt so the end user can choose between 6-bolt and Centerlock rotors, but I suspect 6-bolt rotors were less expensive. Nonetheless, the brakes stopped reliably and brake rotor replacements will be cheaper down the line.

One more nitpick, particularly for folks riding a smaller frame: the seat tube water bottle cage mount is set too high. You can fit a 21 oz bottle here with a little room, but there is loads of space to mount it lower. I understand why Trek didn’t do it – the band-on front derailleur mount and integrated chain catcher need room – but smaller riders want bigger bottles, too!

The touch points on the bike – the bars and saddle work well. The handlebars are comfortable all over, with a slightly flattened profile at the tops and plenty of room to move around in the drops, partially thanks to the flare in the drops. Further, I get along well with the Bontrager Verse Comp saddle, a choice that feels right on bikes three times the price of this Domane AL.

I would call the Trek Domane AL safe. The bike doesn’t feel particularly urgent or excited to get up to speed, but it does feel confident and composed once there. The handling is predictable and smooth, but not especially sharp. They’re exactly what I expected from the Domane. But the gravel road capability surprised me, giving the Domane AL real all-road bike credibility.

The gravel bike tire clearance, mounts for racks and fenders, and full carbon fork are nice upgrades to a bike that I think will make a lot of people happy, whether they’re new to cycling or a seasoned rider alike.
