Gangotri Travel Tips

  • Maintain the sanctity of the place by refraining from alcohol and non-vegetarian food.
  • The weather at Gangotri remains chilly throughout the year. Carry ample woolens when visiting the region.
  • Traveling to Uttarakhand in monsoons is a little risky as the region witnesses road blockages due to frequent landslides. The best time to visit Gangotri is from May-April and September-October.

Staying in Gangotri

Being a revered pilgrimage for Hindus, Gangotri has various types of accommodations – ranging from luxury hotels to budget guesthouses to Dharamashala's. In addition to that, they also have camping accommodations for tourists and pilgrims. The government has also set up GMVN guesthouses. During the peak season, Gangotri is flocked with pilgrims and finding a place to stay is difficult.

Gangotri Food Guide

There are plenty of restaurants and roadside food stalls in Gangotri where north Indian vegetarian food is served along with a few popular Chinese dishes. Since Gangotri hold deep religious values for devotees, alcohol and non-vegetarian food is banned in and around Gangotri. Apart from that one can find eating options at the hotels which have an in-house restaurant.

History of Gangotri

The sacred Gangotri town is built around the holy Gangotri shrine , having it as the epicenter. The aboriginal Gangotri temple was built in the early 18th century by the mighty Gorkha General, Amar Singh Thapa and was later rebuilt by the Maharaja of Jaipur.

Mythology about Gangotri

There are two mythological tales associated with Gangotri, the first one states that King Sagar, the great grandfather of King Bhagirath wanted to extend his empire, for which he performed the ' Ashwamedha Yagya '. When he was busy in performing the Yagya, his horse was let loose to roam freely across the empire. When the soldiers were unable to locate the horse, the 60,000 sons of King Sagar were asked to find it. While searching for the horse, the sons of King Sagar came across a place where sage Kapila was meditating and noticed that the horse was tied next to him. They interrupted sage Kapila's meditation and accused him of stealing the horse.

Sage Kapila who was pot boiled turned all the 60,000 sons of King Sagar into ashes, cursing them to attain heaven only when the ashes will come in contact with the holy water of river Ganga, (which used to flow only in the heaven). Therefore, King Bhagirath did a serious penance to please river Ganga so that his ancestors could achieve ‘moksha’ or salvation. The penance lasted for more than 1,000 years and King Bhagirath was able to appease the holy river Ganga, to come down to Earth from the heavens above.

While the other legend states that responding to the King Bhagirath’s prayers, Ganga agreed to come down to Earth, also warning that her rapid downpour will annihilate the Earth. Therefore, Lord Shiva held the soaring river Ganga in his luscious locks to save the entire mankind. It is believed that the site where Jalmagna Shivlinga lies is the place where Lord Shiva received the Goddess Ganga in his locks. When the river Ganga started flowing on Earth, the Gangotri temple was erected to shelter her.

Gangotri National Park is situated in northern India in the Uttarkashi District of the state of Uttarakhand . The park spans 2,390 sq km (920 sq mi) of land across a highly mountainous part of the country.

Gangotri National Park sits along the upper catchment of the Bhagirathi River. The mountains in the park are part of the Gangotri Group of the Garhwal Himalaya, which are a subrange of the easter Himalaya . The northeastern section of the park forms the international boundary of India and Tibet ( China ). Within the snow capped Himalaya peaks lies the Gaumukh Glacier along with the headwaters of the Ganges River. Furthermore, alpine meadows in the park provide ideal conditions for much of the region’s flora and fauna.

The high, steep ridges of the park are met with deep gorges. Many of the craggy cliffs in the region are covered with massive glaciers. Meanwhile, narrow valleys run throughout the peaks, creating the drastic changes in elevation that are a distinct feature of both the park and much of northern India.

Additionally, Gangotri National Park is surrounded by other popular outdoor recreation areas. The Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary lies directly to the south, with Nanda Devi National Park to the southeast, and the Sangla Valley and Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuaries to the west.

Bhagirathi, Gangotri National Park, India

The mountains in the Gangotri National Park are part of the Gangotri Group. This group of peaks is a subdivision of the Garhwal Himalaya, which is a subrange of the Himalaya . The famous Gangotri Glacier is located in the park boundaries, and is known for being one of the primary sources of the Ganges. The Gangotri Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Himalaya. The glacier spans 30 km (19 mi) in length, and it is 2 to 4 km (1 to 2 miles) wide. Common rocks found in the park include quartz, kyanite schist, granite, garnet mica schist, and augen gneiss. The peaks of the park are situated just north of the Main Central Thrust along the Indian and Eurasian plate boundary. The Himalaya started to form during the Late Cretaceous when the Eurasian plate and the Indian plate collided, giving rise to many of the world’s tallest peaks.

Major peaks within the park include Chaukhamba I , Satopanth , Chaukhamba II , Chaukhamba III , and Kedarnath Main .

Meru Peak, Gangotri National Park, India

The Gangotri National Park is home to high altitude ecosystems that are common in the Himalaya.

Western Himalayan subalpine conifer forests dominate the lower elevation landscapes. These forests are filled with fir trees intermixed with deodar, oak, spruce, and rhododendrons trees. Higher elevations in the park are home to Western Himalayan alpine shrubs. Alpine meadows are also common beneath the massive glaciers. Landslides have separated many sections of the park resulting in distinct and isolated landscapes. The park is home to over 150 species of birds along with 15 mammals. Similar to other parks in the region, Gangotri National Park is home to the ever-elusive snow leopard. The region surrounding Gangotri National Park has been inhabited for thousands of years. Ancient rock paintings and rock shelters in the region date back at least 12,000 years while many other more recent archeological remains in the region date back to about 1,500 BCE. Spanning from the fourth to the fourteenth century, the land surrounding the park was ruled by the Katyuri dynasty. When India gained its independence, the Garhwal Kingdom became the Uttarakhand state. The park was finally established 1989 to protect the biodiversity and the cultural significance of many of the iconic peaks. Today the nearby city of Uttarkashi acts as a gateway for treks in the peaks of the park. Despite the park’s close proximity to Uttarkashi, much of the park is relatively undeveloped. Smaller communities can be found surrounding the park, many of which are centered around grazing pastures and religious temples.

  • Tehri Dam , the highest dam of India and one of the highest dams in Asia, is visible from New Tehri. The town was created for relocation after Tehri town got submerged by the Dam.
  • Eco Parks situated in Dhanaulti – are a cluster of 2 eco-parks – Amber and Dhara about 200 m apart. It has been developed recently by the Forest Department of Uttarakhand

A riverside settlement about 20 KMs before Guptkashi in the Mandakini Valley, Kund offers stunning views of Kedar mountain – the backdrop of Kedarnath Temple . In fact, Kund forms an important pit stop for many pilgrimages including visiting temples like Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Triyuginarayan, Guptkashi, etc. Main places on your visit this trip would include –

  • Ukhimath, a pilgrimage situated at an elevation of 4000 ft., is around 41 km from Rudraprayag. During winters, the idols from the Kedarnath temple and Madhyamaheshwar (Panch Kedar) are brought to Ukhimath.
  • Deoriya Tal and Tunganath Trek – the high altitude lake is about a 3 KM trek from the Ukhimath-Chopta road.

Beautiful views at Gangotri in Garhwal

Rajaji National Park

Rajaji National Park lies 25 km from Haridwar and 40 KM from Rishikesh. The park is an excellent point for bird watching with over 23 species of mammals and 315 species of birds found here. You can participate in Jeep safaris, arranged by the forest department.

Descriptive Active Garhwal Itinerary

Now, let me take you through the detailed journey plans

Day-1 Delhi – New Tehri (300 Kms, 7 Hours)

[Chamba – Tehri Dam (10.00 kms), Eco Park Dhanaulti (29.00 kms)]

Start your day off as early as possible to reach New Tehri. While the driving time is 7 hours, you’ll be stopping over many places – including the holy towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh . Reach by the evening and rest for the day.

Day-2 Activities and sightseeing

Enjoy the early morning sunrises in the Himalayas! Your views should include the stunning Nanda Devi peak. Today, you should plan on visiting the Eco-Park. Return through the forests at Kanatal . Here, you may enjoy an evening session of rappelling.

Magical Reflections in Deoriatal Lake

Day-3 New Tehri – Kund via Tehri Dam / Lake (155 KMs – 5 hours)

[Kund – Ukhimath (10.00 kms), Deoriya Tal and Tunganath Trek (14.00 kms)]

Depart for Kund early in the AM from Tehri. The hamlet of Kund is situated en route to Kedarnath and also lies in close proximity to Chopta, with some stunning meadows. Today’s journey will include stops at the Tehri Dam and Lake. Once you’re at Kund, I would highly recommend a light hike to the Ukhimath temple and later spending your evening time by the gushing sounds of the river.

Day- 4 Bird watching and Deoriatal Lake trek

Wake up as early as you can to visit the bird-watching spots. I highly recommend doing it pre-sunrise and having an expert accompany you. Also, remember to wear subdued colors! After you’ve had your heart’s fulfillment here, have breakfast and move to Sari village. From here, you will start on your 2-hour trek to the Deroriatal. Trust me when I say this, the lake with the meadows surrounding it will make you forget any troubles in your life!

Day-5 Chopta visit and Tunganath visit. Later in the day, leave for Jayalgarh (70 KMs, 2 hours)

Today’s day starts with a visit to India’s Mini-Switzerland! Here, you can even take a short trek to Tungnath – at an elevation of 3680m. The views from Tungnath are stunning and the Shiva’s shrine is holy and transcendent. Once returning to Chopta, have some snacks and rest up, before commencing on your forward journey. Jayalgarh is a renowned place for some White Water rafting. I suggest waiting till the next day to participating in this activity, however- you’ve had a long enough day as it is! Rest up!

Sunset on the way to Harsil - Garhwal

Day-6 Jayalgarh – Rajaji National Park (135 Kms, 4 hours)

Start your day bright and early with a beautiful session of white water rafting! Then, after some rest, some food, take off towards the Rajaji National park. Here, I highly urge you to splurge a little and get a stay at some of the riverside premium lodges! This will offer you some of the most relaxing views and a perfect end to your trip as the last stop! There are a bunch of trails you can explore, though be careful and check the routes before embarking on the journey,

Day-7 Rajaji National Park – Wildlife and Bird Watching in Rajaji National Park (0.50 kms)

This is the day you get to indulge in a jeep safari – and boy, what a day it will be! Also, if you still have energy- you can even squeeze in a visit to Haridwar for the evening Aarti!

Day-8 Depart to Delhi (280 kms – 7 hrs).

The last day of the trip comes so soon, don’t they! I hope this trip was as beautiful for you as it was for me (and writing it was particularly cathartic!). I am sure Garhwal would have been wonderful to you and this will be a journey you’ll remember for a long time!

Popular Extensions to the active Garhwal Itinerary

If you’re keen, you can add another day or 2 to your Garhwal active itinerary, then I highly recommend spending some time in Rishikesh – truly the most tranquil of places and Haridwar for – above all else – some lip-smacking food!

If you want you can even add a trip to Auli further from Tunganath – Chopta – Chamoli route.

On the way to Tungnath Temple in Garhwal

Garhwal has a lot to offer and this itinerary obviously will not help you cover the entire place. However, the whole journey of 8-10 days will be life-enriching and stunning, to say the least.
