The sand not only remains cool in the summer sun, but it gives the pristine waters an emerald cast. Offering a welcome change of pace from the crowded and hotel-backed beaches closer to the resorts, this easily accessible and clean oasis offers nature trails, spots for grilling and picnicking, and campsites.

Crab Island is less of an island and more of an underwater sandbar – and its surrounding crystal clear water attract boaters and ocean lovers from all over the area. Previous visitors recommended bringing floats to use in the water and visiting at high tide for the best experience. Keep in mind that while you can bring alcoholic drinks, there will be nowhere to buy these types of beverages once you reach Crab Island.

Okaloosa Island Pier welcomes visitors every day from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., mid-November through mid-March; during the summer, it's open 24 hours a day. Angling rates are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for kids 6 to 12, while children younger than 6 can fish for free. You can also rent rods and reels on-site. Observers will be charged $2 to watch the action. You do not need to obtain a permit if you're fishing from a pier with a saltwater fishing license or a for-hire vessel (such as a guide, charter or party boat) that has a valid charter boat license or charter captain license. According to past visitors, Big Kahuna's is pricey for a park of its size, but it's also one of Destin's best spots to take the family when you need a break from the beach. The water park is open from mid-May through August and features more than 40 attractions, including slides, water rides and the Honolulu Half Pipe with a wave simulator. You can also float through the park along its lazy river. And between September and early May – when the water rides are closed – you can still enjoy Big Kahuna's Adventure Park, which is home to a mini-golf course and other thrill rides.

Adults and children who are more than 48 inches tall pay $48.99 for a single admission to the water park, while tickets for kids shorter than 48 inches cost $40.99. If you purchase tickets online in advance you can save up to $8 per ticket. Plan to pay $5 to park and between $11 and $15 to rent a locker. Adventure Park tickets are sold separately.

The Track Destin The Track Destin

Featuring five go-kart tracks, two mini-golf courses, arcades and more kid-friendly activities, The Track is sure to entertain the whole family. Previous visitors said the mini-golf courses are well-maintained and they appreciated the park's offerings for children of all ages. Bumper cars and bumper boats were also a hit among visitors. In addition, The Track offers a thrill zone that caters to those seeking a more adrenaline-filled experience. People who venture into this section of the park can feel the sensation of skydiving on the Skyflyer ride and spin through the air on Hurricane 360.

This fun complex is situated right off Highway 98, just west of Henderson Beach State Park . Each activity costs a certain amount of points, and visitors can purchase and load points onto a card. The lowest point card you can buy, for 55 points, costs $55. The highest point card is the 500 point mega card, which costs $500. For reference on how many points particular attractions cost, go-carts are four to 11 points per ride (depending on the track); mini-golf is nine to 12 points (depending on age); the Skyflyer is 20 points and Hurricane 360 is 11 points. If you purchase cards online before arrival, you can take advantage of substantial discounts. Discounts for large groups are also available. The Track is open Monday to Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. On-site parking is available. To learn how this quaint seaside city came to be, make a trip to the Destin History & Fishing Museum. Visitors will learn about the city's beginnings and its native inhabitants, its roots in the fishing industry and its journey to becoming an official city in 1984. There are exhibits that explain the science behind the stark white sand on the Destin beaches as well as the vast array of fish in the ocean. The museum uses artifacts, film, photographs and other media to showcase information.

Previous visitors appreciated the museum's knowledgeable staff members, many of whom have lived in Destin for years and know the ins and outs of the area. Although the museum is small, travelers feel the size adds to the quaint, family-friendly atmosphere. There are scavenger hunt activities for children as well as guided tour options for adults.

Along the shore, 30-foot white sand dunes meet the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Enjoy fishing, nature trails, and over 60 campsites all attached by a boardwalk. It’s one of the prettiest beaches in Florida .

Vibrant emerald green waters are the star of the park, perfect for swimming at a constant 75-80 degrees year-round. Because the water is so clear, you will have no trouble seeing marine life like tropical fish, dolphins, and sea turtles. This is truly one of the best beaches in North Florida!

When you visit, we advise avoiding the peak hours of visitation from 10 AM – 3 PM. Arriving early or later in the day is the perfect way to nab a great spot on the beach to soak up the sun!

Play a Round at Kelly Plantation Golf Course

If you’re looking for one of the best Destin attractions to relieve stress, pay a visit to Kelly Plantation Golf Course. One of the best-rated courses in Florida , Fred Couples and Gene Bates designed Kelly Plantation to overlook the scenic Choctawhatchee Bay.

Spot Wildlife at Gator Beach

There are many places to see wild alligators in Florida , but there is no place safer to see them up close and in action than at Gator Beach inside Fudpucker’s Beachside Bar & Grill.

Gator Beach is an alligator sanctuary right next to the restaurant that is completely free to the public. Gator Beach rescued hundreds of alligators from breeding farms. Gators live full lives instead of being killed for their meat and leather.

When you visit, walk around and see the gators, and ask the experts all your questions! There are gator feeding shows where you can see their massive jaws in action up close! You can even feed them using a long cane pole. They’ll swim right up and take a bite!

Make sure to meet and greet Pearl, the albino alligator. Her skin and eyes are completely white! Albino alligators cannot survive in the wild due to their coloring, so Pearl was rescued. They are so rare, that there are estimated to be less than 50 albino alligators in the entire world.

Gator Beach is open from 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM daily. It is one of the best free things to do in Destin, Florida!

Eat at Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill

One of the most fun things to do in Destin is to pay a visit to Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill. No, you won’t be stuck inside an actual fishbowl! But you will be immersed in an aquatic wonderland that will make you feel like you’re in the middle of the ocean!

First, in the restaurant area, sit down for some dinner. Choose from soup, salad, sandwiches, and pizza. The main entrees include fish and chips, shrimp alfredo, and many other fresh seafood specialties.

Once you’ve had your fill, head over to the bowling alley. You heard us right, bowling alley! Twelve lanes are waiting for you with a fun underwater theme. Wooden lanes, or “docks,” feature underwater scenery. Bowling balls are designed to look like mermaids and octopi.

There are hand-painted murals and fish hang and twirl from the ceiling. The ball return machines look like dangerous sea creatures like sharks, gators, and dolphins!

Because of this spot’s popularity, we recommend arriving early. Tables and lanes are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Waiting times can be as long as three hours, so plan accordingly!

Fish in Choctawhatchee Bay

Because Destin is known as the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village, you’ll find no better spot in Florida to drop a line and reel in a big one! Also known as the Billfish Capital of the Northern Gulf, fishing at Choctawhatchee Bay is one of the best things to do in Destin.

The beauty of the Bay’s green waters isn’t restricted to the surface! It seems like Mother Nature spent a little more time in this part of the country. It’s no wonder this town was founded by fishermen!

Luckily, Choctawhatchee Bay has miles of coastline and abundant marine life for fishing flats and shallow sandbars. Catch everything from snapper, grouper, tarpon, mackerel, amberjack, and more.

You will need a fishing license from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before you hit the waters. You can pay $17 for a 3-day fishing license or you can book a fishing charter where you’re covered by the captain’s license!

After a day at sea, take your catch to a local restaurant. Most kitchens offer a “Cook Your Catch” option where they will scale, clean, and prepare the fish you just caught!

Learn About Conservation at the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge

Perhaps one of the most philanthropic of Destin activities is to pay a visit to the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge. Thirteen miles north of Destin and once the Sasquatch Zoo, today the refuge dedicates itself to the education, conservation, and rehabilitation of Florida’s natural fauna .

Today, the refuge houses 130 animals of 35 species. These animals find sanctuary here from abusive captivity and zoo closings, or a temporary home during rehabilitation before re-release into the wild.

As a non-profit, the refuge supports itself completely through the donations of locals and businesses. Every day, a zookeeper gives an educational lecture at 10:30 AM. The topic of the lecture changes with the keeper on duty for the day.

You can meet a wallaby named Elliot, a white Bengal tiger named Kalua, as well as peacocks, turkeys, sloths, lemurs, and baboons! Zoo treats are available for $1 a bag to feed llamas, goats, and deer!

The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge is open from 10 AM – 5 PM on Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 2-10. All proceeds support the Wildlife Refuge.

Visit the Air Force Armament Museum

One of the best things to do near Destin to get a taste of history is to pay a visit to the Air Force Armament Museum. This is the only museum in the world dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of memorabilia and artifacts of the Air Force Armament.

A sobering reminder of the price of freedom, you can see 29 different aircraft on display like the AC-130, F-15, and multiple others from the World War II era to the present. You can also see guns, bombs, and missiles that have been used in combat.

We admit the name of this next Destin attraction doesn’t sound inviting. But Crab Island isn’t actually an island full of crabs! It’s actually an expansive sandbar, a popular spot to anchor your boat to enjoy fun in the sun!

On the northern side of the Destin bridge, the shallow waters are protected from surf and waves typically found on beaches. Because the East Pass of Destin Harbor flanks the sandbar, the waters remain calm and easy for even novice swimmers to enjoy.

Along the four acres of the sandbar, you can swim up to floating restaurants and food boats to get refreshments! Keep in mind these eateries are only open from March through October. Snorkel around, play a game of water volleyball, or lie back on a raft and soak up the sun.

One of the best summertime things to do in Destin, you can be your own captain and charter a boat out to Crab Island. You could also kayak there if you want a good workout.

The most affordable way to get to Crab Island comes by way of the Crab Island Shuttle Boat. A 3-hour excursion on a boat with a glass bottom is perfect if you don’t want to be responsible for your own boat.

Catch a Dolphin Sighting

With 40,000 dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico, there are plenty of places to run into a dolphin. But because of its crystal-clear waters, you won’t find a better place to spy on dolphins than Destin. Because the waters stay warm at 75-80 degrees year-round here, the dolphins don’t need to migrate!

You are most likely to see dolphins in Destin in late spring through the end of summer. During this time, females travel to the area for the mating season! Dolphins like to appear at daybreak, so plan your outings from 10 AM – 12 PM or 2 PM to dusk.

Head to Okaloosa Island Pier, which boasts multiple dolphin sightings a day! For $2 you can walk up and down to see dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life. You can’t go wrong with Crystal Beach or Miramar Beach either.

Another option is to book an excursion with Southern Star Dolphin Cruise. Profiled on CNN and National Geographic, their motto is “expect a miracle.” You’re basically guaranteed a dolphin sighting in the 80-foot glass-bottom boat. You’ll cruise from Destin Harbor around the Gulf of Mexico for two luxurious hours.

Learn at the Emerald Coast Science Center

For a hands-on day of science and discovery that’s fun for the whole family, head on over to the Emerald Coast Science Center, one of the best places to visit in Destin. Dedicated to inspiring the next generation of STEM students, this museum engages visitors in a truly interactive fashion!

Inside, you’ll find many exhibits that explore robotics, physics, engineering, and the properties of light, sound, and color. Make sure to go on a Thursday to see an exciting chemistry demonstration at 11:30 AM!

There’s also a planetarium that features tours of the stars. Shows are scheduled on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Space is limited, so make sure to purchase your tickets in advance .

After the show, head to the SMALLab. Your entire family can play on what is essentially an iPad the size of an entire room! Motion capture cameras track your movements in a 15×15 space, making learning immersive. Work together to solve puzzles, create stories, and study the world.

Outside, you’ll find the Marine Exhibit. Climb aboard a real boat and learn how vessels stay buoyant in the water and how radio communications work on board! Afterward, check out the Dino Dig Pit. Try your hand at paleontology and dig to see what mysteries lie beneath the sand.

Celebrate Mardi Gras at the Boardwalk

In Destin, Mardi Gras is a big deal. If you thought Gasparilla was one of the biggest events in Tampa , Destin will rival that notion. Mardi Gras in Destin celebrates with dazzling floats, colorful costumes, street performers, and live entertainment!

If you head to Lulu’s Restaurant, you can attend the Birds of Paradise Ball, just one of the local celebrations. From 7-10 PM, enjoy an expansive buffet, open bar, and live musical guests. Dressing up is not an option and required “island elegant” attire is recommended.

For the kids, check out the Mardi Gras Masquerade at Destin Commons. An authentic Mardi Grass brass street band plays along with musical guests Mr. Big and the Rhythm Sisters. At stations throughout the Commons, kids can create Mardi Gras accessories and masquerade masks.

Once the kids are in bed, head out to the Mardi Gras Pub Crawl! $10 gets you samples at the local bars and your money directly benefits the Alaqua Animal Refuge. Here you’ll find the Annual Mardi PAWS Costume Contest for pets! If your furry friend is festive enough, they can take home a prize for first, second, or third place!

Shop at the Baytowne Wharf Pier

After a day at the beach, your crew may look at you and say "what now?" Well the answer is easy, head down to Destin's Harborwalk Village. A highlight of the village is the quarter-mile-long Destin Boardwalk , chock-full of great restaurants, shopping, and things to see and do.

With the sparkling, clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico lapping at 24 miles of white-quartz sands, the Florida Panhandle city of Destin is a longstanding vacation spot for beach lovers of all ages. But there's more to love here along this barrier island set between Pensacola to the west and Panama City to the east: world-class golf, beach resorts, and fishing (Destin is affectionately known as the "world's luckiest fishing village"), plus lots of beachy bars, seafood spots, and attractions.

Plus, it's hard to argue with an average of 343 sunny days per year, not to mention an average annual high temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 61. This incredibly benign climate makes Destin a spot to play outdoors, both on and off the water, all year round. Here's what to do in this playground along Florida's Emerald Coast .

Let's start here: All the beaches in Destin are sugar-white, soft, and surprisingly cool underfoot even in the heat of the summer. Why? The sands here contain finely ground, rounded quartz crystals that originally washed down from the Appalachian Mountains at the end of the last Ice Age. Those white sands also reflect the sun brilliantly back through the shallows of the Gulf of Mexico, creating a stunning emerald cast to the water (and no doubt contributing to this stretch of Florida shoreline being dubbed "The Emerald Coast").

Henderson Beach State Park

Nearly 60 percent of the beaches along the Emerald Coast are preserved, so do not miss a chance to explore the natural gifts of Destin and beyond. With a mile of stunningly white, protected sands along the Gulf, Henderson Beach State Park has six picnic pavilions, a playground that overlooks the water, and a sweet 3/4-mile pet-friendly trail that winds among the park's protected dunes and vegetation.

Shore at Crystal Beach Park

To the east of this treasure, the beauty continues with the Shore at Crystal Beach Park with a small parking lot, a pavilion, and picnic tables. Walk or bike the path adjacent to Highway 98, or enjoy the scenery from wildlife observation areas. The park is a stop on the local trolley route.

James Lee Park

A bit farther east, James Lee Park leads to another gorgeous strand of white sand, which is accessible via nine dune walkovers (and has 170 parking spots and a trio of picnic pavilions). Pack a picnic or wander over to The Crab Trap restaurant for salads and seafood.

Norriego Point

A pair of beaches sit on either side of East Pass (and the jetties that mark it), a deep-water channel between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The strand to the east of the jetty is ideal for watching the boats come and go, and there's great snorkeling on the interior of the jetty as well.

While not directly on the Gulf of Mexico, Norriego Point is a wonderful little white sand peninsula at the end of Holiday Isle, with one side facing Destin Harbor and the other East Pass. With gentle dunes, weathered wooden fences, and sea oats, it's a picturesque spot to hang out, not to mention watch the boats on East Pass. Bonus: The Destin Water Taxi stops here, so you can leave your vehicle behind.

Enjoy a break from the sun (or fill up a rainy day) with some quality museum time. First up: the Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base, for an up-close exploration of 29 military aircraft from the World War II era to the present day, including the fastest plane ever built, the SR-71 Blackbird (admission is free). Next: Destin History & Fishing Museum, a small and charmingly old-fashioned spot full of artifacts and photos that bring the area's piscine legacy to life. Keep the kids busy and slide in some STEM at the Emerald Coast Science Center in nearby Fort Walton Beach, and finally, get a glimpse of the deep history of the area with a visit to Fort Walton Beach's Heritage Park and Cultural Center —home to a prehistoric temple mound (and museum), plus a Civil War exhibit building, the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum, and the tiny and delightful Garnier Post Office Museum.

For the members of your crew who love a buzzy outing full of options, head straight for HarborWalk Village, an outsize collection of shops, charters, themed restaurants and bars, and all manner of amusements (not to mention the home of Emerald Grande vacation rentals ), which doesn't take itself too seriously and might just fulfill the promise of something for everyone.

Stop at Destin Commons for clothing, jewelry, and specialty shops, a round of aquatic-themed bowling, and the City Food Hall with nine restaurants serving a range of Thai, Middle Eastern, and island fare.

When spending time in a place known as the world's luckiest fishing village, it would be a crime not to join the angling scene. Start at Destin Harbor, home to the state's largest and most elaborately equipped charter fishing fleet. Book a charter for a half or full day, drop a line off the nearby 1,200-foot Island Pier, or surf cast from the city's beaches. And if watching the fleet return and unload is more your speed, plan a walk along the harbor's docks between 4 and 6 p.m., when most of the boats come in (particularly on Fridays and Saturdays).

Cruises and Tours

Want to watch marine life instead? Book a dolphin or sunset cruise on the 80-foot Southern Star or an educational tour on Boogies Watersports' glass-bottom boat.

Take a water taxi or excursion tour to the popular Crab Island to watch marine life, float in the shallow waters, or enjoy a snack from one of the floating vendors.

Diving and Snorkeling

Under the water, the fun is just as expansive. Emerald Coast Scuba offers snorkeling excursions off the Destin jetties as well as scuba options for every level diver—including first-timers. Note also that Destin is home to some serious wreck diving, including sunken barges, tugs, liberty ships, landing craft, airplanes, army tanks, and bridge rubble—all hangouts for grouper, flounder, and cobia.

The Emerald Coast is home to eight championship golf courses, and in Destin proper you'll find the semi-private Kelly Plantation Golf Club with miles of white-sand waterfront and 7,000 yards of greens. Meanwhile, the top-ranked Regatta Bay Golf & Yacht Club is nestled between nature preserves and the Choctawhatchee Bay.

Make memories with an activity the whole family can enjoy. Level up your sand-sculpting skills with sandcastle lessons that teach techniques and tips to take you from traditional bucket-shaped structures to three-foot works of art.

Beach Bonfires

Sunset doesn’t mean your beach day has to end. Watch the sun dip next to a relaxing beach bonfire , set up by local pros. They’ll even provide tiki torches, beach games, and marshmallows for s’mores.

Florida tops list of most searched spring break destinations by state: Was your city included?

Spring break has sprung and Florida prepares itself for an influx of tourists who hope to take advantage of the sunshine and beaches as an escape from the cold that feels ubiquitous in the nation’s northern climes.

Data shows multiple Florida cities top Google searches for spring break destinations among other states, putting Florida far and above the most sought-after location to spend the vernal interval.

Only Texas and California boast as many search queries from hopefully spring breakers looking for beaches and sunshine, according to the data compiled by car seat manufacturer Diono.

Miami spring break

Despite severe discouragement from the city of Miami Beach hoping to ward off the chaos of spring breakers tearing through town, Miami's popularity nationwide as a potential destination has not diminished.

Miami dominated search data for states in the northeast. New Yorkers along with many in surrounding states searched for Miami more than any other spring break destination. People in Delaware, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont have all been eying Miami for the season.

Spring breakers in Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina and, of course, Florida also dominated search results for Miami.

Destin spring break

Destin dominated in the south. Georgians, Louisianans and Virginians all were most interested in Destin as a destination.

Known for its pristine white beaches, Destin's fine powdery sand is actually made from the pulverized rock from the former extended range of the Applachian mountains 12,000 years ago when the last ice age ended. When the pulverized rock was carried by waterways into the Gulf of Mexico, currents deposited it onto the beaches of Destin, where it's a tourist attraction millennia later.

Panama City spring break

Alabama, Mississippi and West Virginia all ensured that Panama City would place third among the most searched for Florida spring break cities.
