Jon Batiste to embark on The Uneasy Tour in 2024, first North American headlining tour

LOS ANGELES —  Jon Batiste , the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician and former bandleader for "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," will embark on his first North American headlining tour in support of his latest album. The expansive  "World Music Radio,"  featuring his signature rich blend of R&B, hip-hop, swing, jazz and pop, was released earlier this summer.

The tour news arrived Monday, on the heels of the  2024 Grammy nominations  announcement: Batiste is up for six Grammys, including album, song, and record of the year.

The Uneasy Tour: Purifying the Airwaves for the People will kick off Feb. 16 in Portland, Oregon, and take Batiste across the U.S. and Canada. The tour wraps in Miramar Beach, Florida, on April 27.

Along the way, he'll hit numerous cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York and Atlanta.

"I'm into numbers, so: 20 theaters and 24 performances to bless the pivotal year 2024. For my first solo run I wanted to play in smaller venues and curate experiences that let me really feel the people while I play. Think of these 24 shows less as a tour and more as a series of 24 not to be missed experiences, each being one-of-a-kind," Batiste told The Associated Press in an exclusive statement. "We are designing these performances to be catalysts to bring people together, raise awareness for things I care about and inspire change in this country, and the world."

The goal, he says, is to experience his performances in "intimate, life-affirming presentations created to unite, uplift and inspire us all in this time of change and uncertainty," he explained.

How to get Jon Batiste tickets for Uneasy Tour

Presales begin Nov. 14 and tickets for the general public go on sale Nov. 17, both on Ticketmaster .

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

JON BATISTE

Multi-Grammy and Oscar winner Jon Batiste is one of today’s most prolific and accomplished musicians. Born and raised in New Orleans, Batiste studied and received both a BA and MFA at the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York City. From 2015 until 2022, Batiste served as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS. In 2018, he received a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots, and in 2020, he received two Grammy nods for the albums: C hronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard and Meditations (with Cory Wong).

Batiste composed and performed music for the Disney/Pixar film Soul , for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score alongside fellow composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. He is the second Black composer in history, after legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock, to win an Academy Award for composition. Soul also earned Batiste a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a NAACP Image Award, and a Critic’s Choice Award.

Batiste’s album WE ARE was released in March 2021 to overwhelming critical acclaim. Subsequently, he was nominated for eleven Grammys across seven different categories, a first in Grammy history. He went on to win five of those Grammys, including Album of the Year.

Batiste’s latest studio album, World Music Radio —featuring collaborators including Jon Bellion, Lana Del Rey, Lil, Wayne, and more — draws inspiration from his mission to create community with the power of music. The album received widespread critical acclaim for its universal message and genre-defying sound, hailed by NPR as “a sprawling exploration of what global music can sound like,” and by the Associated Press as “a mesmerizing way to dial into Batiste’s eclectic and wide musicality.”

Along with his longtime partner, Emmy award-winning journalist and New York Times’ bestselling author Suleika Jaouad, Batiste is the subject of the upcoming documentary portrait American Symphony , which premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival. The documentary follows the two artists through one of the most intense years of their lives: Batiste is amidst the creation of a symphonic masterwork that will be performed at Carnegie Hall and is nominated for an unprecedented eleven Grammys the same week Jaouad discovers the leukemia she battled a decade earlier has returned.

Jon Batiste Opens First Headlining Tour With A Celebration Of Love & Life In Portland, OR [Photos/Review]

jon batiste, jon batiste portland, jon batiste tour, desz, pdx jazz fest, pdx jazz, jon batiste first tour, jon batiste 2/16/24

Jon Batiste played the first show of his first-ever headlining tour on Friday at Portland, OR’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall .

The grand symphony hall was packed for the sold-out show, which also served as the opening of the 2024 Biamp Portland Jazz Festival presented by PDX Jazz . The crowd buzzed with youthful excitement, though most of the audience seemed to be at least ten, if not 20 years older than the 37-year-old Batiste.

After a brief opening performance by vocalist DeSz , the lights dimmed and the curtain opened to reveal an elaborate stage design, with risers elevating half of the six-piece band, props, and a backdrop resembling the psychedelic desert scene in the trailer for Batiste’s recent album, World Music Radio , and the video for the single “Calling Your Name” .

Batiste burst onto the stage like a rock star playing an electric guitar instead of starting on his native piano. During the opening “TELL THE TRUTH”, he was all over the stage, spinning like James Brown or Prince one minute and then darting over to the pianos on either side of the stage the next. The New Orleans native has grown into quite the dazzling showman since his days sitting behind the piano on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert .

As Batiste and his band worked through a set of mostly original tunes from throughout his discography, a theme began to emerge. That theme was nicely distilled when, after finishing “I Need You”, Batiste led the crowd in a call-and-response singalong of the pre-chorus, filling the spacious hall with the words, “In this world with a lot of problems / All we need is a little loving / Thank you, thank you, oh, you make me / Thank you, thank you for your love.”

The crowd cheered in recognition of the opening groove of “FREEDOM”, which Batiste performed at the Grammys in 2022 before taking home awards for Album of the Year, Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song, Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, and Best Music Video. Not more than 20 seconds into the song, he halted the band and admonished the crowd for their lack of movement.

“Where I come from, New Orleans, when you play music like this people, don’t stand as still as you,” he said, making it clear that he was not going to let the crowd off easy just because of their age. Everyone stood up and let loose as the band started the song again.

jon batiste tour

Additional themes including empowerment, gratitude, and the preciousness of life were weaved throughout the set, which featured an impressive array of musical styles. From the blues-based “Cry” and the laid-back honky tonk two-step of “Master Power” to the reggae-infused “Be Who You Are” and modern-sounding, electronic-influenced pop tunes “Raindance” and “Drink Water”, Batiste demonstrated his appreciation and mastery of various musical forms from around the globe.

Other highlights of the performance included powerful audience call-and-response singalongs and a brief New Orleans-style second-line parade that saw Batiste march among the crowd, not just through the aisles, but actually across a row of seats, giving some lucky fans an extremely intimate encounter with the bandleader.

jon batiste tour

The set ended with an emotional “Butterfly”, a song that started out as a lullaby he wrote for his wife when she was undergoing cancer treatment, after which the crowd beckoned Batiste back to the stage, chanting his name in unison. With the parting words, “I love you even if I don’t know ya,” Batiste left the stage as his band finished the encore.

After earning ample accolades and racking up an impressive list of musical achievements, Jon Batiste has come into his own with his first headlining tour. By synthesizing his fantastic musical abilities and charismatic personality with the simple yet profound gospel of love he has been preaching for years, he has created a show that is more than a concert, it’s a celebration of life, love, music, and other grand mysteries. As he said after playing a particularly potent “Master Power”, “It’s more than entertainment; it’s a spiritual practice.”

Jon Batiste is one of history’s most brilliant, prolific, and accomplished musicians.

Batiste studied and received both a B.A. and M.F.A. at the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York City. From 2015 until 2022, Batiste served as the bandleader and musical director of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS. Most recently, Jon was awarded a Sports Emmy in the category of “Outstanding Open/Tease” for his 2022 NCAA March Madness piece. In 2018, he received a GRAMMY nomination for Best American Roots, and in 2020, he received two GRAMMY nods for the albums: CHRONOLOGY OF A DREAM: LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD and MEDITATIONS (with Cory Wong).

In 2020, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the Disney/Pixar film SOUL , an honor he shared with fellow composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Jon’s work on SOUL also earned him a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a NAACP Image Award and a Critic’s Choice Award. He is the second black composer in history, after legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock, to win an Academy Award for composition.

Batiste’s album, WE ARE , was released in March 2021 to overwhelming critical acclaim. Subsequently, he was nominated for eleven GRAMMYs across seven different categories, a first in GRAMMY history. He went on to win five of those GRAMMYs, including Album of the Year. The Matthew Heineman-directed Netflix documentary “American Symphony” – released in partnership with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company – chronicles this meteoric rise in Batiste’s career, all while composing a symphony for Carnegie Hall as his wife, bestselling writer Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatment. Batiste also performs the powerful song from the film, “It Never Went Away,” which he co-wrote with GRAMMY winner Dan Wilson.

Batiste’s latest studio album, World Music Radio , draws inspiration from his mission to create community and expand culture with the power of music. His most ambitious work yet, World Music Radio sees Batiste break down the musical barriers of “genre” and collaborate with global superstars Lana Del Rey, Lil Wayne, NewJeans and more. Following its release, Batiste was nominated for another six GRAMMYs, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year (“Worship”), and Song of the Year (“Butterfly”). He is currently on his first-ever tour of North America.

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Is Here, and It’s Much More Than Country

The superstar’s new LP is a 27-track tour of popular music with a Beatles cover, cameos by Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, and features from Miley Cyrus and Post Malone.

A woman in a cowboy hat and elaborately bejeweled jacket brings one hand to her chest and smiles in sunglasses.

By Ben Sisario

Beyoncé has gone country, sure … but it turns out that’s only the half of it.

For months, the superstar, who made her name in R&B and pop, has been telegraphing her version of country music and style. There was the “disco” cowboy hat at her Renaissance World Tour last year, and her “ western ” look at the Grammys in February, complete with a white Stetson and black studded jacket. Then, on the night of the Super Bowl, she released two new songs, and sent one of them, “Texas Hold ’Em” — with plucked banjos and lines about Texas and hoedowns — to country radio stations, sparking an industrywide debate about the defensive moat that has long surrounded Nashville’s musical institutions.

At midnight on Friday, Beyoncé finally released her new album, “Cowboy Carter,” and the country bona fides were certainly there. Dolly Parton provides a cameo introduction to Beyoncé’s version of “Jolene,” Parton’s 1972 classic about a woman confronting a romantic rival. Willie Nelson pops in twice as a grizzled D.J., who says he “turns you on to some real good [expletive],” including snippets of Chuck Berry, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the blues singer Son House.

Yet “Cowboy Carter” is far broader than simply a country album. Beyoncé does a version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” and, on the track “Ya Ya,” draws from Nancy Sinatra and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.” “Desert Eagle” is glistening funk, and the upbeat “Bodyguard” would not be out of place on a modern rock radio station. The album’s range suggests a broad essay on contemporary pop music, and on the nature of genre itself.

That theory is made clear on the partly spoken track “Spaghettii,” featuring the pioneering but long absent Black country singer Linda Martell , who in 1970 released an album called “Color Me Country.”

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they? Yes, they are,” Martell, 82, says. “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined.”

Of course, Beyoncé herself indicated this a week ago when she posted a note on Instagram saying: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

Still, the theme of simultaneously celebrating and transforming country music extends to the album’s cover art, featuring Beyoncé seated sideways on a white horse, dressed in red-white-and-blue rodeo gear and hoisting an American flag.

Guests on the album include Miley Cyrus on the song “II Most Wanted,” and Post Malone on “Levii’s Jeans.” (The extra I’s underscore that “Cowboy Carter” is officially “Act II” of what Beyoncé has said will be a three-album cycle, which began with “Renaissance” in 2022. That motif repeats throughout the album’s 27-song track list. The Beatles cover — where she is joined by a quartet of young Black female country singers — Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts and Tiera Kennedy — is rendered as “Blackbiird.”) Midway through the track “Daughter,” Beyoncé even flexes some opera skills, singing a bit of “Caro Mio Ben,” a popular 18th-century Italian aria. ( More on that here .)

In a statement, Beyoncé described the sonic texture of the album, differentiating it from the synthesized process behind most contemporary pop albums (including her own).

“With artificial intelligence and digital filters and programming, I wanted to go back to real instruments, and I used very old ones,” she said. “I didn’t want some layers of instruments like strings, especially guitars, and organs perfectly in tune. I kept some songs raw and leaned into folk.”

As with “Renaissance,” the audio for “Cowboy Carter” was leaked online shortly before its planned release, with some fans urging others not to listen early.

Back when Beyoncé released her self-titled “visual album” without warning in 2013, establishing the “surprise drop” as an industry trope, it was partly meant to protect the album from leaks, which had become a threat to first-week sales numbers. For these last two albums, Beyoncé has embraced a more conventional marketing plan, announcing her album weeks ahead of time and preparing deluxe physical editions. (There are many for “Cowboy Carter,” including LPs in, yes, red, white and blue vinyl.)

In the end, the leaks meant little to “Renaissance,” which went straight to No. 1 . And, regardless of the new album’s fate at country radio — where “Texas Hold ’Em” has so far made it only as high as No. 33 — the commercial potential for “Cowboy Carter” seems vast, given Beyoncé’s recent success.

Last year, she won her 32nd Grammy Award , more than any artist in history. Her Renaissance tour sold $580 million in tickets, second only to Taylor Swift. A related concert film, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” offered a rare look behind the scenes of her creative process and was a hit in cinemas.

Last week, as the release of “Cowboy Carter” neared, Beyoncé wrote on Instagram that the album was “over five years in the making,” and that “it was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” Fans zeroed in on her appearance at the Country Music Association Awards in 2016, where she performed her song “Daddy Lessons” with the Chicks, and drew backlash online .

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” Beyoncé said. The new album, she added, “is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of an earlier Beyoncé song. It is “Daddy Lessons,” not “Daddy Issues.”

Music and concerts, music and concerts | ajr postpones norfolk show, calling scope too small; city responds.

Scope Arena is pictured Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021, in Norfolk, Va.

The indie rock band AJR has canceled its Tuesday night show in Norfolk, stating the venue is too small for the planned performance.

The band, composed of brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met, was set to kick off its 49-show national tour in Norfolk. Now, the tour will begin with a concert in Philadelphia on Wednesday night.

Guitarist Jack Met posted a video announcement to social media just before 2 a.m. the day of the Norfolk concert.

“This venue can’t accommodate the show we want to do size-wise. Something was lost in communication,” he said.

He promised to reschedule the concert, but gave no official word on when the concert would be rescheduled or if ticket holders would be reimbursed.

The Norfolk concert has been removed from the band’s website, but tickets were still for sale through Ticketmaster.

The City of Norfolk issued a statement Tuesday afternoon expressing disappointment in the band’s decision.

“The 11,000-seat Scope Arena has hosted many elaborate music and entertainment productions, including Kevin Hart, Cirque du Soleil, Patriotic Festival, and internationally recognized entertainers, showcasing the venue’s capabilities to provide awe-inspiring and memorable experiences,” reads the city’s statement.

The city said it will share more information with the 5,875 people who bought tickets, including a new date “when it becomes available.” The concert was booked a year ago, according to Norfolk.

Scope was constructed in 1971.
