Local Wine Grape Varieties in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The unique geography of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, with its proximity to the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, provides an ideal microclimate for grape growing. Some of the best-known wine-producing areas in the region are Collio Goriziano, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Isonzo, Carso, and Lison-Pramaggiore, which is shared with the Veneto region. Udine also produces some excellent wines.

Friulano (formerly known as Tocai Friulano) is the signature white in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The grape is a native varietal that produces crisp, floral wines that develop notes of nuts and fennel as they age. Friulano accounts for nearly a third of the region’s vineyard plantings.

Some of the best Pinot Grigio wines are made from grapes grown in Friuli Venezia Giulia. In contrast to Pinot Grigio grown in other regions, the grapes in Friuli Venezia Giulia produce excellent wines with elegance and structure.

The Pinot Grigio grape’s natural color is copper, but the wine is often made white. However, it takes up its orange color when vinified in contact with the skins.

Glera is the white grape that produces Prosecco sparkling wine. The grape was initially named Prosecco after the village of the same name near Trieste, where the grape is believed to have originated. The Glera grape continued to use the name until Prosecco became a DOCG wine in 2009. To prevent wines made with grapes grown outside the DOCG area from being labeled “Prosecco,” Glera has become the new name of the Prosecco grape.

Ribolla Gialla wine in Trieste, Italy

Ribolla Gialla is a white grape mostly planted in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is also prominent in neighboring Slovenia, where it is known as Rebula.

The grape is predominantly used to produce bright and fresh young dry wines with citrusy and floral notes, good acidity, and often a subtly mineral character.

The grape was primarily used as a blending component until winemakers started to apply new techniques to produce softer, buttery wines. The modern approach shows that Ribolla can produce amazing skin-contact styles, resulting in wines that have excellent balance, denser texture, and stronger aromas.

Dry white wines made with Ribolla make excellent aperitifs, and they pair well with fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. Macerated styles can match poultry or even game meat.

Picolit wine in Trieste, Italy

Some of the most expensive wines in the region are made from the Picolit grape, which is prone to diseases and mutations, causing the vine to lose its flowers and grape clusters. Typically, less than half of a Picolit crop will make it to production.

The Picolit grape also does well in sweet wines, producing elegant, floral wines with a dry finish. The light, honeyed dessert wine it makes is often in high demand because of limited supply.

Vitovska is a white grape variety native to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. This grape variety is known for producing wines that are crisp, fresh, and aromatic, with notes of citrus, green apple, and white flowers. Vitovska is often used in orange wine production along with other grape varieties like Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, and Malvasia.

Merlot is the most planted red grape variety in Friule-Venezia Giulia.

Refosco wine in Trieste, Italy

Refosco is a name used for a group of distinct red grape varieties. There are six different Refoschi grapes, but the most popular and the most planted variety is the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.

Pignolo is a local Friulian grape that produces tannic red wines. It is believed that the grape originated around the Abbey of Rosazzo, a monastery located in the Colli Orientali of Friuli.

The grape is mainly associated with Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where it is used in regional appellations, including varietals and blends. Pignolo can produce age-worthy wines of exceptional quality, but it is still rarely used because of its low yield and finicky nature.

Schioppettino wine in Trieste, Italy

Schioppettino is a red grape that is almost synonymous with the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The grape is believed to have originated near the Slovenian border.

The name stems from the word scoppiettio , which can be roughly translated as “to crackle.” The name may have originated as a reference to the crackling sounds the grapes make when eaten or possibly because the wines would sometimes get fizzy.

The grape is known locally as Ribolla Nera because it was once considered a dark-skinned relative to Ribolla Gialla.

Schioppettino is used in varietals and blends. It creates intensely colored red wines with a medium body and a spicy, peppery-like note on the palate. The aroma is reminiscent of red and black berries, often with hints of violet and herbal and balsamic notes. The wines are smooth and well-balanced with tannins and acidity. They range from fresh and approachable styles best enjoyed young to more complex, age-worthy examples.

Because of their versatile character, these wines pair well with various dishes, including red and white meat, mushroom-based dishes, and local specialties. They could also work well with spicy Asian cuisine.

Tazzelenghe (meaning “tongue cutter”) grapes produce a very tannic and fruity wine that mellows over time but maintains a good amount of fruitiness.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine has a unique taste that distinguishes it from other Italian wines. It is not well-known, but it offers a wide range of varieties that are sure to please any wine lover’s palate. If you’re looking for a new wine adventure, be sure to try out some of the delicious wines from Trieste and the surrounding areas.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia has 4 DOCG, 12 DOC, and 3 IGP wines. The DOCG wines are:

Prosecco, one of the most exported Italian white wines, is made exclusively in the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions. Glera is the predominant grape variety used in the production of Prosecco, though Perera, Bianchetta, and Verdiso can be used as well.

The sparkling wine comes in three levels of bubbles. The bubbliest is   spumante   (sparkling), followed by   frizzante   (semi-sparkling), and   tranquillo   (still).

Unlike most other sparkling wines, the secondary fermentation of Prosecco takes place under pressure in huge stainless steel tanks. This makes the production significantly less expensive.

Considering that Prosecco does not ferment in the bottle and grows stale with time, it should be enjoyed as young as possible, preferably within several years of its vintage. This Italian favorite exhibits more fruity and flowery aromas and much lighter bubbles.

Prosecco is quite versatile, but it leans towards the sweeter end of the wine spectrum, which makes it great as an aperitif, and an ideal match for fruit-based desserts but also light charcuterie and cheese appetizers.

It is also commonly added to sparkling cocktails made with fruit juice and other ingredients. The most notable in Northeast Italy is the spritz which consists of prosecco, digestive bitters (Aperol or Selective), and soda water. It is commonly served as an aperitif.

Trieste wine starts with Friulano

Friulano is one of the signature wines from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It is considered a distant relative of sauvignon blanc.

The wines usually show hints of apple, pear, peach, and almond with a palate-cleansing zing of minerals and acid.

Because of their light character, Friulano-based wines are often enjoyed as an aperitif, but they can pair well with cold cuts and cheese.

Friuli’s best Pinot Grigios are the best in Italy. They are typically rounder, nuttier, and more expressive than those from other regions.

Lison was established as a separate DOCG in 2010. It’s made primarily from Friulano grapes.

The requirements mandate a minimum alcohol level of 12.0% and 12.5% for Classico. The wines are also required to be aged a minimum of 2 to 3 months.

Refosco wines vary in character, ranging from light and fruity to heavier and robust examples. However, most are deep red and rich in tannins and acidity. They often have a subtle almond-like or bitter note that helps balance the tannins and acidity.

The flavor is reminiscent of red fruit with some herbal and spicy notes. These wines often benefit from aging.

Pignolo wine in Trieste, Italy

Pignolo wines are elegant, intensely colored, and have excellent balance of acidity and well-integrated, ripe tennis. The flavor and aromas are fruity, reminiscent of red berries, blackberries, and plums. They are frequently oak-aged, while the aromas often evolve into spicy, licorice-like notes.

These wines are typically paired with pork, red meat, and game. They also go well with aged cheese.

Merlot from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region are typically low-quality wines.

Cabernet Franc is particularly loved in Friuli Venezia Giulia and eastern Veneto, where it is also widespread.

The flavor and aroma are typically herbaceous when young, but with aging, it loses its youthful herbaceousness and becomes very elegant.

It pairs well with grilled red meats, braised meats, and game.

The Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit DOCG is one of the excellent dessert wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The native Picolit vine is the only one in the whole region and one of the few in Italy dedicated exclusively to producing sweet wines.

The plants produce only one or two bunches per vine. Because the bunches are sparse and the berries are resistant to mold and humidity, it is highly predisposed to drying. The grapes are harvested late and often left on the vines to concentrate their sugars or to form noble rot.

The rarity and refinement of this product made Picolit the wine of nobles, starting with the Habsburgs, who reigned over the territory of its production until 1918.

Ramandolo and Verduzzo in Trieste, Italy

Ramandolo DOCG is a sweet, golden dessert wine made from the Verduzzo Friuliano grape. The grapes are allowed to dry on the vine or in special drying rooms as they get “the noble rot.” Handpicking is almost always necessary because the vineyards are rather steep.

The result is an interesting dessert wine with an intense and characteristic scent. The taste is velvety and full-bodied, with moderate acid, and it can vary from sweetish to pleasantly sweet, with more or less tannic acid and hints of wood from the barrel-aging.

Enoteca Bischoff in Trieste, Italy

The Bischoff Enoteca is the oldest wine shop in Trieste and one of the oldest in Itlay. The shop feels like a museum for wine lovers!

Address: Via Mazzini, 21, 34121 Trieste TS, Italy

The Bischoff wine shop was founded in 1777 by a Swiss citizen, Antonio Bischoff, who came to Trieste to seize the commercial opportunities offered by the Free Port. Now in its 240th year, the shop boasts a wine cellar with 2,500 Italian labels.

The Bischoff wine shop has a rare collection of Malaga Stravecchio. Following damage by an exceptionally high tide in the winter of 1976, the bottles were found buried in the shop’s basement since 1800. The historic Malaga was the subject of an exhibition at the famous Christie’s auction house. In addition to the Malaga, the Bischoff wine shop boasts an impressive assortment of prestigious wines and collector’s bottles, such as the Madeira from the end of the 18th century.

Views of Trieste and the Slovenian coast from the Strada Napoleonica.

A local’s guide to Trieste: 10 top tips

The Italian port city has blossomed from being a frontier post at the edge of the Balkans into vibrant cultural hub – with excellent seafood

  • Trieste’s Barcolana regatta – in pictures

Strada Napoleonica

Discovering Trieste also means discovering The Carso, a steep limestone plateau that follows the Gulf of Trieste and the Slovenia border, is perfect for picnicking, hiking, biking (including e-biking) and rock climbing or just picnicking. There are half-a-dozen trails, but the Strada Napoleonica is the perfect introduction. Take a number 4 bus from Piazza Oberdan to the Opicina obelisk and begin a bracing 5km clifftop hike to the village of Prosecco (it gave its name to what is now one of the world’s most popular wines, though production is now concentrated 100km west in Veneto). Like all Carso hamlets it has an osmiza , a pop-up cantina serving vino for under €1 a glass. Prosecco’s Osmiza Verginella is one of the rare ones open throughout the year, with incredible views down the wild coastline. discover-trieste.it

Trattoria alla Sorgente

Alla Sorgente, Trieste, Italy

Trieste is excellent for seafood lovers, with the freshest produce arriving straight from the Adriatic, cooked simply and at very reasonable prices in the many traditional osterie and trattorie . With its rustic wooden tables and sunny terrace, the friendly Trattoria alla Sorgente is an excellent for lunch choice, but popular with locals, so call first to book. The abundant antipasti misti (€14), with tender octopus, plump scallops, grilled sardines and creamy baccalà is enough for two, while the creative pastas include chunky paccheri (tubes) with baby squid and cherry tomatoes. Closer to the docks are two other top addresses: the lively Osteria Istriano , for alici impanati (€10), tiny breaded anchovies, or the more elegant Trattoria Nero di Seppia , which has a chocolate panna cotta (€6.50) to die for. 2 via della Sorgente, +39 347 939 6519

Il Posto delle Fragole

Il Posto delle Fragole, Trieste,

Another of Trieste’s important symbols of freedom, the Posto delle Fragole (strawberry patch) is a bar, restaurant and cultural centre in the grounds of Trieste’s former psychiatric hospital, in the extensive Parco San Giovanni above the city. Some 45 years ago, this was the first Italian city to end the forced enclosure of mentally ill people, opening the hospital gates to all in the 1970s. Today students attend university courses here, and many of the distinctive pastel-yellow Liberty buildings are venues for the performing arts, cinema, a radio station ( Radio Fragola ), concerts, and late-night summer parties. The park and its famous rose gardens are easily reached on the number 12 bus from the city centre. 4 via de Pastrovich, ilpostodellefragole.eu

Stazione Rogers

Stazione Rogers

Trieste comes alive in the early evening when aperitivo time kicks off, with Aperol and Campari spritz from €3 with free snacks. There are plenty of bars in the old town, but a fun offbeat address is this once-abandoned modernist petrol station – designed in 1953 by Ernesto Rogers, editor of Domus magazine and cousin of Richard Rogers. Today, instead of serving petrol, it serves alternative culture for the city, and is especially popular with Trieste’s large student population. Inside, there is a venue for performances, exhibitions and concerts, while the forecourt is a sprawling outdoor bar overlooking the marina, that stays open till 2am, with DJs and live music. 14 Riva Grumula, stazionerogers.org

Mastro Birraio

mastro birraio, Trieste, Italy

The owner of this 35-year-old pub, knowlegeable Daniele Stepancich, showcases a great selection of beer from Italy’s artisan breweries, including Zanna , made in nearby Gorizia. It has eight pumps and a huge range of bottled brews, plus tasty pub grub, from burgers and goulash to locally cured hams, salami and cheeses. Just don’t ask for wine, as this is a beer and spirits-only locale. Wine lovers should head to Enoteca Nanut , a hole-in-the-wall cantina near the canal, with over 50 wines served by the glass. 24 via Felice Venezian, on Facebook

Boat trip to Muggia

Boats Moored At Canal In MuggiaGettyImages-646255721

A visit to Trieste has to include a boat trip, and a good option is the Delfino Verde ferry that links Trieste and the Venetian port of Muggia. The journey only takes 20 minutes as it hugs the bay towards the frontier with Slovenia, and Muggia is a gem, with its tiny harbour filled with fishing boats. Have a drink at the local watering hole, Ai Fumi, then, further down the street, eat a classic fritto misto at Osteria al Corridoio , owned by Sabrina, whose son Mauro is the fisherman. delfinoverde.it , return trip €7.90

Bagno Alla Lanterna

alla lanterna, Trieste, Italy

At this historic public beach, there is proof that a wall does not have to divide but can actually give liberty to people. In a unique Trieste story, male and female bathers are divided by a wall at the tiny Lanterna beach, known popularly as El Pedochin. This may sound sexist and politically incorrect but I can assure you that the opposite is true. A local documentary presented at Cannes in 2016, The Last Resort , explains how the division lets bathers be themselves. Ask anyone here – teenagers, mums with kids, retired people – no one would ever get rid of the wall. The best way to understand is to come and see for yourself. Entrance is a symbolic €1, and of course there is a bar just outside where everyone has lunch or an evening aperitivo together. Molo Fratelli Bandiera 2, sport.comune.trieste.it

Piolo & Max

Piolo and Max with their amaro

There is a tradition of after-dinner digestivo all over Friuli, a strong grappa or bitter herbal amaro , but two local wine buffs, Piolo and Max, have dug further into Trieste’s Hapsburg heritage to create their own unique liqueurs by infusing local grappas and fruit brandies with magical recipes of plants, herbs and spices. Like medieval alchemists, they have a workshop/laboratory cluttered with hundreds of jars and steel containers of weird and wonderful botanicals. What started off as a dare has turned into an artisanal success story, and their minuscule store and tasting bar in the town centre stocks tipples from lemon, ginger, absinthe, coriander, chilli and camomile infusions to Newtella, a light chocolate milk-based liqueur, from €10 a bottle. 11 via Felice Venezian, pioloemax.it

Da Giovanni

da giovanni, Trieste, Italy

No one should visit Trieste without experiencing an authentic buffet , a tradition dating back to when the city was under Austrian rule. A buffet is a temple to pork, with roast hams, boiled pork loin, smoked sausage and giant mortadellas heaving on ancient marble bars. There are a dozen locales around town but Da Giovanni is a special place, where I always bring my class for a celebratory end-of-year party. Here architects and judges sit next to students and building workers at long communal tables, talking in Triestine dialect rather than Italian, and tucking into a €3.50 crusty roll of cooked ham covered with grated horseradish accompanied by a foaming beer or local wine straight from the barrel at €1 a glass. 14 via San Lazzaro, trattoriadagiovanni.com

Faro della Vittoria

Faro della Vittoria lighthouse, sailing boats taking part in the historic sailing regatta Barcolana

Our historic lighthouse is an emotional icon for me, as when your boat turns the corner of the coastline, the sight of the it is the first sign that you are coming home. The Barcolana regatta and the Faro are inseparable, as the race begins in the waters around the lighthouse. But few visitors realise that, though it is run by the Italian navy, the lighthouse is open to the public at weekends, free of charge, including a guided tour. The panorama is exceptional, stretching across the sea to Slovenia and Croatia. This is a genuine frontier city, with a history of families divided by international borders, but today, the lighthouse has become a symbol of liberty. 141 strada del Friuli farodellavittoria.it

Getting there Ryanair flies to Trieste from Stansted. Venice’s two airports are within 150km.

When to go Spring, summer and autumn are best: winters can be windy and cold. The town holds regular festivals including a Sardine festival with live bands every night (until 19 August), and the spectacular Barcolana regatta , which attracts about 25,000 sailors each year and is celebrating its 50th year on 14 October 2018.

Stay Aria Marina is a converted palazzo in the old town with two apartments and one double from €50 room-only. Round the corner the chic Urban hotel has doubles from €96 B&B.
