Scotland snow tracker live - check your area as Met Office weather alerts kick in

T hree days of snow and ice warnings have now kicked off in Scotland today (Thursday February 8) with some potentially 'disruptive' conditions on the way this week.

And in preparation of the flurries, which could accumulate to as much as eight inches in the north of Scotland tomorrow, you can now check the snowfall live wherever you are thanks to a handy online tracker.

Areas such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife and Stirling will be under alert from midday today, with the Met Office warning that snowfall and additional ice could end up posing a 'hazard'.

The widespread warning ends at 3pm on Friday February 9 - just in time for another snow and ice alert, more focused on the north of Scotland, to begin. This one is slightly more severe, with up to eight inches of snow possible over higher ground areas.

Some scatterings of snow have already began to fall across the far north of Scotland, where a warning is in place until 10am, as you can see in the map below. You can keep up to date with live snowfall throughout the day by checking out your local area on the tracker.

The warning today, which covers much of the central belt, has been issued due to potential outbreaks of snow and sleet which could wreak havoc for road, rail and bus journeys. As much as 10cm (four inches) of snow could fall on higher ground locations, although the amount of snowfall will vary from place to place.

Ice will also pose an additional hazard, with slippery patches on untreated pavements, roads and cycle paths potentially causing injuries.

Speaking about the forecast, Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “Cold across most areas away from the south of the UK, will be met by moisture-laden air spreading from the south. Where milder air encounters cold air, rain, sleet and snow will develop, bringing the risk of 2-5cm of snow in places, whilst some other areas see little or no snow.

“Over higher ground 5-10cm is likely, while locations above 200m within the Amber warning areas could see up to 25cm of snowfall. Snow here could drift in strong to gale force easterly winds. As the milder air from the south gradually pushes northwards the focus for wintry hazards also shifts northward with warnings issued for Scotland.”

On Friday, February 9, even more areas will be under alert throughout the day with Met Office warnings for snow and ice covering huge swathes of northern Scotland until 6pm on Saturday.

James Madden from Exacta Weather explained that the snow will gradually begin to fade away by the time the weekend hits, adding: "The last of the heavy and widespread snow from this snow event will then push in across some large parts of Scotland and to lowland regions throughout Friday, before spreading to parts of the Highlands and gradually fading away during the early hours of Saturday."
