WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

testimonials_background.jpg

Wonderful Experience

Booked this as a surprise for my husband and to say he was thrilled is an understatement. The staff that checked us in were very friendly and organized. Went over safety and weighed in before boarding. Our pilot, Josh was wonderful. Josh was informative and helpful. This is an amazing experience. The glacier is beautiful and we brought a bottle to drink the water. Cool that you can hear the glacier crack. So glad we did this!

best glacier exploration tour!

My whole camera roll is of our heli tour! We did a glacier exploration tour (2hours) where we flew and landed next to the glacier and hiked along the walls. It was absolutely incredible. Michael and Kate were the best pilot/guide we could ask for! We got so lucky with sun & beautiful weather even in the winter! I cannot wait to come back in the summer to experience more of their tours. The helicopter flight and views absolutely do not compete with any other experience. It was worth every penny!!! Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Took my elderly mum on the heli-dog and extra glacier landing trip! Amazing! They took very good care of her and everyone was so very patient and kind. Don’t even hesitate to include the extra glacier landing!! It is straight out awesome and so very special! It is definitely worth the extra cost !!!

Amazing Experience

This was hands down the best experience we’ve had in Alaska. We hit the glacier tour with landing. Our pilot was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He explained what we were seeing - from why the ice is blue to moulins and more! Walking on the Knik Glacier was surreal. Highly recommend.

It is definitely possible to see other Alaska helicopter tours during your trip

Ever considered experiencing Alaska by drinking glacial water right from the glacier itself? Well, you’ll get the chance on this top-rated tour!

The tour kicks off with a delightful helicopter flightseeing experience over the Anchorage area from Palmer. You’ll be treated to an aerial spectacle of Alaska’s rugged terrain, highlighting its enchanting coastline and patternless mountains. Amidst them, you’ll witness the stunning Knik River and Great Gorge.

Next, bid adieu to your helicopter ride for a bit as you touch down on the secluded Whiteout Glacier for a guided hike. Experience the thrill of treading on unspoiled snow, and don’t forget to snap a selfie with the icy landscape as your backdrop.

This tour is a year-round favorite, offering a 30-minute Frozen Ice formation walk during winter. This is easily the #1 Alaska helicopter tour out of the Anchorage area , so be sure to book well in advance if you want a spot for your trip!

alaska helicopter tours palmer

On this tour, you’ll embark on a narrated helicopter trip to the stunning Herbert Glacier, get the chance to take a sip of the natural flowing water, and enjoy a guided walk across the vast Juneau Icefield!

Having hiked this iconic route myself, Sean and I have always said the next time we return will be in a helicopter.

Perfect for families with a few hours to spare in Alaska’s capital of Juneau, this tour has over 300 5-star reviews and continues to claim one of the top-rated Alaska helicopter tour spots on this list! If I were you, I would make booking this tour a top priority.

If you do plan on spending some time in the 49th state’s capital fo Juneau, don’t forget that it’s one of the best whale-watching spots in Alaska! I even have 10 Incredible Juneau Whale Watching Tours to prove it.

🚁3. Grand Knik Helicopter Tour – 2 hours 2 landings – ANCHORAGE AREA

alaska helicopter tours palmer

Have a few hours to spare during your time in the Anchorage area? This small group helicopter tour out of Palmer is just the thing!

On top of one full hour of exhilarating flight time, guests will enjoy two landings, with one of them being on the iconic Alaskan Knik Glacier. Knik Glacier helicopter tours can be hard to come by, so the fact that this tour actually lands on the glacier is a true rarity.

Following your flight through the Knik River Valley, you’ll get a second opportunity to land in a stunning alpine region with ample opportunities to spot local wildlife including moose, bears, and even Dall sheep!

🚁4. Juneau Helicopter Tour and Guided Icefield Walk

Before going on of these Alaska helicopter tours, you should take into account how comfortable you are with heights and the possibility of some turbulence

If you were hoping for a combination of glacier trekking (don’t worry, it’s for people of all ages!) and flightseeing, then this is the best helicopter tour in Juneau for you.

Step foot on the beautiful Herbert Glacier (though, depending on the weather, you may also go to Taku Glacier, Norris Glacier, or Lemon Glacier!), test the icy glacial waters that run through its crevices, and learn about the history of the glacial progression over time.

🚁5. Glacier Landing Tour from Girdwood

alaska helicopter tours palmer

Earning Viator’s Badge of Excellence is no easy feat, and this Glacier Landing Tour from Girdwood absolutely deserves the praise!

With flight time dedicated to the mountains and glaciers peppering the Chugach National Forest (one of my personal favorite regions in all of Alaska), guests on Alpine Air Alaska will get to step foot on some of the state’s oldest ice formations.

If you’re lucky, you might even be able to spot a few local mammals (like moose and bears!) in their natural habitat.

And of course, for the shutterbugs out there – this scenic tour gives plenty of opportunities to capture some truly breathtaking aerial shots! So make sure to bring your cameras and phones on this one.

🚁6. Prince William Sound Tour with Glacier Landing from Girdwood

There's nothing like stepping foot on a glacier during an Alaska helicopter tour

Another impressive tour earning Viator’s Badge of Excellence, this enticing Alaska helicopter tour from Girdwood takes you soaring over the breathtaking Prince William Sound!

Enjoy a glacier view window seat as you take in a bird’s eye view of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and potential wildlife in Alaska’s beautiful Chugach Range.

Following your glacier landing (the specific glacier will be dependent on weather), you’ll get the opportunity for stunning photos of the Sound and the surrounding national forestry.

If flightseeing and glacier tours are on your Alaska must-do list (they should be…), then this is the ultimate tour you can take from Girdwood!

🚁7. Ketchikan Helicopter Tour, Top of the World

alaska helicopter tours palmer

Departing from the heart of Alaska’s southeastern coast, this helicopter tour from Ketchikan not only provides stunning aerial views of the Tongass National Forest and even the Canadian Rockies, but also the opportunity to land on a local mountaintop!

With a very small group size (maximum 3 people) and a knowledgeable pilot, you’ll get an in-depth look at the local glaciers, mountains, and even wildlife in Ketchikan!

Besides, we all know that the photos are some of the best souvenirs from Alaska you can bring home.

P.S. if you’ll be spending time in Ketchikan, here are the 7 BEST Ketchikan Fishing Charters you can take in 2024 !

🚁8. Glacier and Mountain Viewing Tour

In the summer months you can see the lush, green mountains surrounding the glaciers on these Alaska helicopter tours

I promise Viator doesn’t give out these awards willy-nilly, but this Glacier and Mountain Viewing Tour is also among the award-winning Alaska helicopter tours that are definitely worth your time if you’ll be heading to Seward (where Sean and I got married before living in Alaska !)

Now, it’s quite a quick tour which is perfect if you have some time to waste following your Kenai Fjords Tour before your dinner reservation at Ray’s Waterfront Restaurant (another personal favorite).

On this tour, you’ll soar across the absolutely enchanting Resurrection Bay (it’s where the mountains meet the sea and ocean life is plentiful) where you’ll have views of 4 different glaciers and even floating icebergs!

With a landing on the remote Godwin Glacier, you’ll even get a chance to photograph the incredible seascapes and landscapes that make Alaska so unique.

If you’re extra lucky, you might even spot some humpback whales or sea otters while on your aerial tour!

🚁9. Extended Bear Glacier Scenic Flight

alaska helicopter tours palmer

Departing from Seward, you’ll be treated to probably the most scenic 45 minutes of your life . Not only will you get to soar over some of the most stunning glaciers and Alaskan wildlife, but you’ll also be able to spot Mt. Harding (one of the highest peaks in the Kenai Mountains)!

In the summer, you’ll witness cascading waterfalls, and year-round you will fly through the fjords that make up the beautiful Kenai Fjords National Park. Along the journey, you’ll fly by the impressive Bear and Aialik Glaciers making for presumably the best Alaska helicopter tour leaving out of Seward !

🚁10. Helicopter and Glacier Paddle Boarding – PRIVATE

Alaska helicopter tours provide ample opportunities for great photos

Whether you want to have some fun with your friends or are hoping to pop the question to your partner, there are a lot of reasons why a private Alaskan helicopter tour is a great idea! And this one seriously ticks all the boxes in our opinion.

This half-day tour has you enjoying everything from aerial views to mountaintop landings, and even the chance to paddle board through the stunning glacial waters of a remote area of Alaska!

Easily one of the most adventurous tours on this list, if you get to go on this tour during your trip I will be insanely jealous.

🚁11. Winter Helicopter Ice Climbing Adventure

alaska helicopter tours palmer

Another amazing tour option for the adventure-seeker in your life, this exhilarating outing combines your Alaska helicopter tour with none other than ice climbing !

Start your journey with a stunning flight over the Chugach Range and several glaciers including Colony and Knik before stepping foot on the ice. From here, you’ll suit up in the appropriate climbing gear and get started on your ascent of the area’s breathtaking ice formations!

Don’t worry though, you aren’t required to climb anything you aren’t comfortable with, and there are different challenge levels available for each guest. It’s also a very small group tour with a maximum of 3 guests allowed, so you’re guaranteed all of the attention you may need during the trip.

🚁12. Helicopter Combo Tour in Ketchikan

The best part of going on an Alaska helicopter tour is flying over the open crevices in the glaciers

Want to get the most sightseeing out of your Alaska helicopter tour without any time on the ground? Then this is the tour for you.

During the flight, you’ll hit numerous regions of southeast Alaska including the beautiful 1,500-foot Mahoney Falls and George Inlet all the way to the Tongass Narrows. Along the route (and on a clear day), guests will enjoy epic views of Prince of Wales Island in conjunction with the snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies!

Perfect for those with limited ability or children too young to be trusted on a glacier, the Helicopter Combo tour in Ketchikan is the ultimate choice.

🚁13. 30-Minute Flightseeing Tour from Girdwood

Many companies who run Alaska helicopter tours will bring you to a glacier and allow you to taste the glacial water

Short on time but want to pack as much as possible into every second of your trip to Alaska? We’ve got you.

In just 30 minutes, you’ll take off from Girdwood (home to the Girdwood Brewing Company – one of our favorites!) and initially take in the views from the captivating Seward Highway and Turnagain Arm.

This region is known for its expansive wildlife populations, so you may even have some animal sightings during your trip! From there, you’ll continue to explore the Alyeska Range, numerous glaciers, and get the best bird’s eye view of the journey between Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula.

Perfect for people of all ages, this 30-minute flightseeing tour from Girdwood packs a lot into a short amount of time!

FAQ: Alaska Helicopter Tours

Here, we’re going to dive into answering some important questions you’ll need to know before jetting down the runway!

Are Helicopter Tours Worth the Money?

alaska helicopter tours palmer

Helicopter tours are worth every single penny you put in. They’re not only an exciting way to experience Alaska’s breathtaking landscapes, but they also provide unique access to remote and otherwise inaccessible areas.

These tours are designed with safety as a top priority and often include knowledgeable, local pilots that share engaging facts and stories about the scenery and wildlife you encounter.

So, if you’re seeking a truly unforgettable Alaskan adventure, then a helicopter tour is definitely worth the money.

What is the Best Time for a Heli Tour?

Make sure to bring a good camera if you plan on going on one of these Alaska helicopter tours

The best time for a heli tour in Alaska is during early summer to early fall – around June through October .

The weather is typically more predictable and the days are longer (thanks to that glorious midnight sun!), giving you more daylight hours to marvel at the breathtaking Alaskan landscape from above.

Sure, it’s going to be a bit colder in the fall, but this is when we were rewarded with one of the clearest days of the year. Our summer flightseeing tour actually got canceled three times due to rain and poor visibility, so don’t bank on the summer months being the best for heli tours in Alaska.

Are Helicopter Tours Cold?

It's important to dress properly for your Alaska helicopter tour since it can get very cold

Especially in Alaska, helicopter tours can get quite cold! The first time Sean and I took a flightseeing tour around Mount Denali from Talkeetna, my hands were so cold (with gloves on) that I could barely take pictures.

Since you’ll be leaving civilization behind and entering a world of mountaintops, glaciers, and let’s face it… snow (yes, even in the summer months), it’s going to be imperative that you bundle up for any of the Alaska helicopter tours listed above!

For more details on the type of weather you can expect during your trip, check out How Cold is Alaska? Alaska Temperatures in 2024

What do you Wear on a Helicopter Tour in Alaska?

Many Alaska helicopter tours have you landing on a glacier

For a helicopter tour in Alaska, layering is key. Start with a base layer of thermal or moisture-wicking clothing to keep you dry and warm.

Add a mid-layer such as a fleece for insulation, followed by a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against the elements.

Don’t forget a pair of sturdy, warm boots, gloves, a winter hat, and sunglasses for the glare. Remember, it’s better to be overdressed than underprepared – you can always remove a layer if you’re too warm!

What are the Best Helicopter Tours in Alaska?

Alaska helicopter tours provide an excellent view of the surrounding mountain ranges

While there are dozens of amazing companies all across the 49th state , the best helicopter tours in Alaska include the Denali Experience Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna (it’s actually in a bush plane, but it was my favorite flight in Alaska of all time), the 60-minute Alaska Helicopter Tour with Glacier Landing from Palmer , and the 2-hour Grand Knik Helicopter Tour !

What Helicopter Tours in Alaska are Good for Avoiding Crowds?

If you're trying to avoid the crowds on these Alaska helicopter tours, it's good to remember that you may be landing on the glacier with other companies

Fortunately, due to the nature of the size of a helicopter, you’ll rarely be with more than a few people during your flightseeing tour.

However, since many helicopter tour companies communicate on the safest routes and glaciers to land on each day, there’s a good chance that when you land you’ll be with a larger group than you started.

Don’t let that put you off though, everybody will be there for the same pictures and views, so you’ll get the same opportunity as everyone to see the best spots!

Can You See Wildlife on Alaska Helicopter Tours?

It is likely that you will see wildlife on most Alaska helicopter tours

One of the fantastic perks of Alaska Helicopter Tours is the opportunity to spot diverse wildlife in their natural habitats.

From the sky, you might catch sight of majestic creatures like moose, bears, bald eagles, and even the occasional roaming caribou. And let’s not forget the marine wildlife! If you’re flying over the coastal areas or near the glaciers, you might spot whales, sea otters, or seals lounging on the icebergs.

Do note, however, that wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed as animals in the wild are unpredictable and can move areas depending on the season and food availability.

Are Alaska Helicopter Tours Safe?

Alaska helicopter tours are generally very safe. All reputable companies place a high emphasis on safety, and pilots are well-trained and experienced, especially in navigating Alaska’s unique weather conditions and terrain.

Before takeoff, you’ll receive a safety briefing to ensure you’re well-prepared for the ride. Additionally, helicopters are regularly inspected and maintained to meet strict safety regulations.

It’s important, however, to book with a trustworthy company that has a good safety record and reviews. Remember, while nothing is 100% risk-free, these measures greatly enhance the safety of your unforgettable adventure in the Alaskan skies.

If you want to know more about what you can do to stay safe during your tour, take a look at this Helicopter Passenger Safety Guide .

It takes the mind a few beats to catch up to the feeling of taking off in a helicopter. Liftoff happens quickly and smoothly and, on this bucket-list trip in particular, immediately reveals amazing views. The pilot deftly maneuvers the helicopter up and over the nearest ridgeline, plotting a course north toward the Knik Glacier. Along the route, passengers can often glimpse Dall sheep on the highest cliffsides, moose feasting in hidden meadows, and even black bears foraging for berries.

Step foot onto thousand-year-old ice.

Glaciers soon come into view, their vast bulks funneling down from seemingly endless icefields in the distance. The pilot explains some of the telltale features of the Knik Glacier, detailing the formation of its medial moraines and more. With a smooth arc, the helicopter descends from its path along the valley's southern mountainsides and swings down alongside the glacier's massive face.

The helicopter soon touches down on the glacier. Just as the first few seconds of helicopter flight seem unreal, so does stepping foot onto thousand-year-old ice. The icescape is otherworldly. The pilot helps passengers slip on crampons and then takes the group on a guided walk to some of the most impressive nearby features. There are pools of remarkably blue water, small rivers rushing within the glacier, and odd formations of rock and ice. The tour concludes with an equally sensational return flight.

The Knik Helicopter Glacier Landing Tour averages 30 minutes of flight time and 30 minutes of glacier time. Weather in the Chugach Mountains can change quickly, so guests should prepare to be flexible as the tour adjusts to suit to the conditions.

Note that this tour also operates in the winter, giving passengers a closer look at a spectacularly snowy Knik landscape.

Maintenance, everyone should have their head in the clouds..

Blue River Aviation’s founder, Jamie Hastings, began flight instructing in 2009 while working as a pilot for Peninsula Airways. After a decade of flight instruction, he decided to pursue his flight school full-time and bring on a number of other instructors. Thus, Blue River Aviation was born.

Our flight school focuses on professional aviation training, preparing students for everything from airline careers to off-airport in Alaska’s vast backcountry. We take pilots from zero hours to commercial multi-engine and CFI. In addition, we provide tailwheel, seaplane, and ski instruction.

  • 134shadb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The trip of 10 lifetimes! If you do one thing in Alaska this is it. I’ve experienced much of what Alaska has to offer and this tour ranks as the best. If you could somehow distill all the wildness, beauty, and wonder of Alaska into 2 hours, this would be it. The pilot was first class, as was the entire operation. If experiencing glaciers and wildlife in a setting that makes you feel like you’re the only person who’s ever stepped foot there is up your cup of tea, then look no further. If you’d rather stand 50 miles away from the landmark with a crowd of people jockeying for the shot then take a hard pass on this one. The pilot will land you on what feels like another planet. “Up close and personal” is a gross understatement for what you’ll experience. We didn’t see another soul for our entire tour. I couldn’t say if we were the only people in a 100 miles, but perhaps so. I can’t say enough good things about this experience. Go do it! I know I’ll be back! Read more Written April 12, 2024

  • kipellen 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great helicopter ride, but.... Absolutely loved our helicopter ride and pilot, who was very kind and knowledgeable. The drive to the glacier was quite nice and our driver pointed out several amazing landmarks along the way. The facilities at the landing pad were clean and modern and the welcome and orientation were stellar. The ONLY thing I thought was wrong with this experience is that, instead of using my cellphone to take pictures, the guide said he would use his. We agreed, not knowing we would have to PAY for them. Then, they proceeded to charge me $30 for not very good pictures made on a mobile phone. He could have used mine, the pics would have been already available to me, and I wouldn't have had to pay. This seems cheap to me. If you want clients to have amazing photos, have a professional photographer do the photos. If the pilot is just going to use an iPhone, have him use the clients and DON'T charge clients for the photos. It left us with a bad feeling. As I am a travel advisor, I will recommend other companies to them until I hear that this practice has changed. Read more Written March 27, 2024

He got us to and from our destinations safe. Our pilot was Michael, and he was awesome!! He was very friendly and entertaining! He taught us about the glaciers and showed us breathtaking, surreal sites. The last stop he gave us a few options, we picked an ice cave. It was his first time at this spot. It was amazing to experience that with him. The glaciers with the snow was breath taking. Alaska helicopter tours was a great experience from the moment I called to make the appointment until the manger dropped me back off at my hotel. I chose to do the transfer and I am so happy I did so. I got to enjoy great conversation and, basically, another tour since Kevin was so knowledgeable able the area. Cody, our pilot was super friendly and an amazing pilot. This was my first time in a helicopter, let alone a glacier, but Cody made the entire experience one that I will never forget. With departure from Knik Valley, the Knik Glacier pops into view immediately. After about 15 minutes, we land right in the middle of Knik Glacier and spent about 30 minutes exploring which included a couple of slides down a massive hill. After returning to the helicopter, Bailey takes us over the azure blue lakes with crevasses made by the wind flying low enough to take it all in. We eventually spot moose and Dall sheep before returning back to the lodge. Read more Written March 17, 2024
