KALANGGAMAN ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE (Itinerary + Budget)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Sep 12, 2023 | Beaches , Kalanggaman , LEYTE , Travel Guide | 2 comments

Kalanggaman Island is  shaped like a bird, reason why its name is derived from the local word “langgam”  that means bird. This sandbar off the coast of Palompon, Leyte has gained popularity in recent years, but it has long been a local secret.  Kalanggaman is hemmed in by palm-studded, cream sand and lapped by swirling, turquoise sea.  It was already past summer when we visited, but this scruffy sandbar remained stunningly beautiful and blissfully devoid of luxury trappings. It’s a little crowded due to  the holiday, but we still managed to snag a spot.

Unknown to many tourists, Kalanggaman Island’s real gem is hidden underneath. This famous sandbar is actually a marine sanctuary oozing with gorgeous marine life and corals. In fact, it is a famous dive spots for divers coming from Malapascua Island, which is about 2 hours away by boat.  If you don’t know how to dive, you can snorkel in the reef drop-off near its shore.  Here’s my Kalanggaman Island Travel Guide with itinerary and budget to help you plan your trip.

KALANGGAMAN PRE-TRIP PLANNING

LOBO, BATANGAS WEATHER

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT KALANGGAMAN ISLAND  :  The best time to visit Kalanggaman Island is during the summer season, from March to May.  You may also travel to Kalanggaman from November to February but try to avoid the months of  June to October due to the rainy season and possible storms.  Best to check the weather updates for your safety.

WHAT TO BRING IN KALANGGAMAN ISLAND:

Bring food and drinks. There’s no restaurant in the island, only 1 store.

Bring power bank as there is no electricity in Kalanggaman Island.

Bring coral-friendly sunblock and wear aqua shoes.

If you want to stay overnight, you can bring your tent or rent a tent forPHP 400/USD 7/EURO 6/SGD 10/MYR 30 per tent.

If you plan to snorkel, you can bring your snorkel gears or rent one from the boat operator or touts.  Fee is PHP 100/USD 2/EURO 2/SGD 3/MYR 8 – PHP 150/USD 3/EURO 2/SGD 4/MYR 11.

ATMs IN KALANGGAMAN ISLAND :  No ATMs in Kalanggaman Island, so stack up cash. You can withdraw cash in Palompon or Bogo.

MOBILE SIGNAL :  There’s a mobile signal, however data is intermittent. If you need a pocket Wi-Fi while traveling in the Philippines, you can RESERVE HERE.

BATHROOMS and TOILETS :  There are changing rooms in Kalanggaman Island and toilets but there’s no freshwater, only saline water. So, if you need to take a shower, better do it in Palompon. Anyway, soap, shampoos and detergents are strictly prohibited in Kalanggaman.

SAFETY IN KALAGGAMAN ISLAND :  During our visit, there were police officers in Kalanggaman Island. Not sure if they are actually stationed there or they were stationed there because there were a lot of tourists since it’s a holiday.  The island is pretty safe for tourists, however, follow the swimming protocols for your own safety. Your boatman or tour guide should instruct you as soon as you arrive in Kalanggaman. There’s also a medic station in case of untoward incidents.  Just a reminder:

Do NOT swim in the sandbar  area because of the dangerous rip currents. I was told there were tourists who drowned there even during our visit! There’s an area where it’s safe to swim, but not around the sandbar!

Wear life jacket when snorkeling for your safety.  There’s an area where you can snorkel.

Do not leave your things unattended.

Kalanggaman Island  is a pristine island located in the municipality of Palompon in the province of Leyte. In 2013, a German luxury cruise ship with almost 400 tourists and over 200 crew members first made a stop over on a then isolated island. It was a trip that ended up putting the island on both the local and international travel map.

From Manila

Getting to Kalanggaman Island from Manila is easy. The closest airport to Kalanggaman Island is the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (TAC) in Tacloban City, Leyte. It’s an hour from Manila to TAC by plane, then 3-4 hours from Tacloban Downtown to Palompon by land. Finally, an hour of boat ride from Palompon Tourism Office to the island.

From Tacloban City

From Tacloban Downtown, you can take a van or bus to Palompon and then take a boat from there. Another option is to arrange for a private transfer or join a tour.

From Ormoc City

From Ormoc City, you can take a van or bus to Palompon and then take a boat from there. The travel time by land and boat can take around 3-4 hours.

From Biliran

From Naval, take a van or bus to Brgy. Libongao, and from there take another van to Palompon town. Alternatively, you can take a van to Ormoc City then another van to Palompon. This is what we did on our trip.

The age-old question before any trip to a new destination – will it live up to the hype? I had the same question in mind as we made our way to Kalanggaman Island from Palompon. But as I watched the island emerge from the distance, my doubts were quickly put to rest. This place is truly a sight to behold!

view of Kalanggaman Island from the boat

I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was the paradise I’ve been dreaming of – a quiet and undeveloped island that exudes a laid-back vibe. Its natural beauty was breathtaking, and I loved that it had no hotels, cafes, or bars. It was just us, the sun, sand, and sea!

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

Upon our arrival, we wasted no time and headed straight to the stunning sandbar on the left side of the island facing Palompon. Despite the blazing sun, I was in awe of the view. The crystal clear waters and blue skies were a sight to behold. However, we were warned by the tourism officer that swimming in the sandbar area is not advisable due to strong currents. So take this advice seriously when planning your visit, no matter how inviting it may seem.

While the sand may not be as fine as in other popular beach destinations in the Philippines, the natural beauty of the island more than makes up for it. Lucky for us, we arrived on a Monday when most weekend tourists had left. Although there were a couple of other groups on the island, it felt like we had the place almost entirely to ourselves.

Kalanggaman Island is such a beauty. I just hope that ALL visitors will follow the  ‘Leave No Trace’  rule all time.

What is the best month to go to Kalanggaman Island?

The best time to go to Kalanggaman Island is during the summer months (March to May). Expect many tourists during weekend, so better schedule your trip on weekdays.

Can I stay overnight in Kalanggaman Island?

Yes! Although there are no fancy resorts, you can stay in a nipa hut or a tent for about 500-750 pesos. You can also pitch your own tent and pay a minimal fee.

The restrooms and shower areas in the island are primitive, so if you are maarte like me, expect the unexpected. Lol. Don’t fret, though! There are shower facilities in the tourism office, which you can use once you get back the next day to Palompon.

Where to eat in Kalanggaman Island?

There are no restaurants and carinderia , so make sure to buy your food supplies in Palompon Market. There is no source of potable water in the island, so make sure to bring enough drinking water to last until the next day. Also, you will be given a few gallons of water by the tourism office (depends on how many people in your boat), which you can use for cleaning utensils, bathing etc.

Is there electricity in Kalanggaman island?

There is no electricity in the island. They have generators used mainly for lighting at night. Don’t forget to bring power banks for your gadgets.

There is mobile phone signal in the island. We used my friend’s Globe Pocket WIFI when we were there and we were surprised we could surf the net! We could even upload pictures on Facebook and Instagram! Real time update, it is!

What to do in Kalanggaman Island

1. walk all over the island.

Palompon, Leyte Travel Guide from a Local Kalanggaman Island and More!

Kalanggaman Island is only 753 meters. On one side, you’ll see a long sand bar filled with white sand and with blue waters. On the other, you’ll see trees and plants and could take a picture of the treehouse.  Enjoy the beauty of this uninhabited Island, especially with your loved ones.

2. Swim on the blue waters

No need to swim farther to get vitamin sea; the water is already as high as your hips or necks after a few steps. We usually swim near the boats, so that we could hang there in case it’s deep. However, you’ll need to check the signs as there are places that are not safe for swimming (the rocky area mostly).

3. Have a Pictorial

Travel Guide to Kalanggaman Island (DIY Guide from a Local)

With a naturally gorgeous backdrop, you’ll love taking pictures everywhere from the sandbar to the west side. Many of my friends did a prenuptial shoot in this Island; it’s so stunning! You won’t regret it. Better bring a gorgeous dress or swimming attire and your favorite camera, and take a lot of pictures to post on Insta or FB!

4. Count the stars or the shells

If you find yourself staying overnight, you’ll love watching the night sky. There’s limited electricity here, so the lights usually are from fire torches or phones. It’s so dark that you’ll fall in love with the stars, especially in the sand bar area. However, if you can’t stay overnight, check out some shells!

5. Enjoy with Family and Friends

Plan a trip with family and/or friends in Kalanggaman Island. Everyone will love it! I’ve been here twice, first with my co-workers and family, and lately, with my high school friends, it has been a blast. Bring a lot of food, too, as there is no internet, your bond will grow stronger!

Here are the expenses you might incur during your trip to Kalanggaman Island:

Here are the prices for the pump boats, usually the tourism officers will arrange what pump boat you will ride to the Island. The operators have their turns as per the tourism office. As for the payment, if you are the only one group riding the boat, you’ll have to shoulder all of the cost. However, if you are groups or a joiner, the price may be divided on how many you are.

For safety purposes, it can’t exceed capacity. So, for example, you are 41, even though the extra is a child, you’ll be asked to go to another boat. The coast guards usually check it before you can go to the Island. Travel time is about 45 minutes to an hour.

  • up to 15 pax – PHP 3,000
  • 15-20 pax – PHP 3,500
  • 20-30 pax – PHP 4,000
  • 30-40 pax – PHP 4,500

For example, you are only 5; sometimes, the tourism officer will ask a group of 10 if it will be okay for you to join them. Sometimes, if there are many small groups or joiners, the officers will also group them according to the capacity of the boat. Boat rental is given to the drivers and not the tourism officers.

  • Tipi Cottages – PHP 1,000 for 2 persons with free breakfast
  • Cottage Rentals – PHP 250 – 700
  • Tents – PHP 300
  • Tables and Chairs – PHP 10 – 100

There is only one store in Kalanggaman Island that sells necessities like snacks, water, noodles, few drinks, and coffee. You’ll have to buy food in the market. The market is near the Tourism Office; you can go there via a shortcut from the Baywalk or the Civic Center.

There are 2 cooking areas on the Island, so you’ll need to buy coal or firewood to cook there. It’s highly recommended to buy food and drinks in the market or grocery store before boarding the boat.

How to go to Palompon / Kalanggaman Island

There are no airports in Palompon, Leyte, but the nearest ones are Cebu and Tacloban. From Manila or any other part of the Philippines, it’s recommended to go via Cebu or Tacloban.

  • If nights are not right for you, then try the route to Ormoc City. From Cebu, you can ride Fast Crafts (PHP 700 – PHP 1,000) to Ormoc City; it will be about a 2-3 hour ride. The first trip is early in the morning at about 5 am until 5 pm. From Ormoc, you can catch a van in Robinsons Ormoc to Palompon. It will take about 1 to 1.5 hours and cost you PHP 120.00.
  • Another option is having a day trip here from Malapascua Island (PHP 800 – 1,200)

From Tacloban

  • Go to Abucay Bus Terminal near Robinsons Tacloban. There are buses and vans from Tacloban to Palompon. The first trip is about 3 or 4 am, and the last trip is 5:45 pm, but if there are many passengers, it might go earlier. The van costs PHP 225.00. Travel time is 3 hours.

Story & Photos

Travel Guide

KALANGGAMAN ISLAND

Kalanggaman Island is known for its long stretch of white sandbar and the clear waters surrounding it. It is located in the province of Leyte in the Visayas region. Some, visit it as part of an island hopping tour or some spend an overnight stay.

GOING THERE

As part of my Eastern Visayas Trip , I chose Kalanggaman Island as my first destination. From Metro Manila , I traveled by air going to Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban. Outside of the terminal, there’s a line of jeepneys that are going to Tacloban Downtown (City Center). I told the driver to drop me at the New Bus Terminal which is located outside the city center. A lot of van operators are stationed there, I rode a van going to Palompon. It took time before we departed, we waited until all seats were taken. Travel time going to Palompon takes 3 hours.

I arrived around 5:30 PM and was planning to stay in town and gather information on how to go to the island. I went to the municipal hall and asked a guy where’s the tourism office. He guided me to a yellow building at the back of the hall. The personnel in the tourism office told me that 15 minutes before, a group of tourists left for the island. If I arrived early, I could have joined them and stayed the night there instead. Since I cannot afford to rent a whole boat, I’ve looked for cheap accommodations nearby and hoped that there will be other tourists tomorrow that I can share the boat with.

The guy brought me to an inn but the price is too high for me. He let me ride a potpot (Pedicab) and told the driver to drop me at a cheaper inn.  The driver didn’t know where to take me, instead, he dropped me at Cham’s Inn. The price is still high but I was able to ask for a discount.

FIRST DAY AT KALANGGAMAN ISLAND

The next day I bought bread and canned tunas as rations (I just bought this out of being lazy to think and didn’t realize that it was not enough). I stayed hungry until lunch the next day XD). After buying all I needed, I went to the tourism hall and registered. They told me to wait for other tourists who would stay overnight on the island. There was this group that was going there but they will not stay on the island. Some of them will be back at noon and some will return to the island the next day. They invited me to join their boat. I was very thankful for them. We became friends for a short time (We shared food, stories, and laughs).

We left the port at 7:00 A.M. One crew caught my attention and pointed towards the sea. Dolphins were jumping but unfortunately, they were too far away from us to capture some photos.

After an hour, we arrived at the island very astonished, as we saw the long stretch of sand and the clear waters around us. The sand is not fine but composed of dead corals. Still, it is a wonderful place. We took a swim after eating our breakfast beside the huts and under the trees.

At noon, My new friends left for Malapascua Island. I stayed under the trees before exploring the island, as it was very hot at that time.

I also met other travelers and they told me that we could watch the sunset on the opposite side of the island. We went to the island’s other side, but we didn’t see the sunset due to the clouds covering it. Exploring the island is an additional experience.  During low tide, another part of the island can be walked upon.

SECOND DAY AT KALANGGAMAN ISLAND

The next day, I woke up without any food and tried to control myself from buying at the store. Instead, I’ve used my time taking photos, swimming, and enjoying the moment left on the island until I leave.

Around noon, my newfound friends returned from their Malapascua Trip. We joined other groups for our return trip back to Palompon. After eating lunch, we were off to our next destination.

Kalanggaman Island is a good place to experience island life. It may be a bit of survival but the experience is unique. It is sometimes lonely to travel alone but what makes it good is that you meet new friends along the way.

KALANGGAMAN ISLAND Travel Guide & Itinerary: How to Get There

KALANGGAMAN ISLAND Travel Guide & Itinerary: How to Get There

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

The whole vessel was brimming with enthusiasm as the boatmen prepared to land us on Kalanggaman Island.

The morning travel was uneventful: there was a slight concern for rain, but fortunately the rainclouds never left the mainland. My companions, groggy the whole trip, were now back to their festive selves, barely hiding their excitement as the island got close. By the time the boat touched silt, everyone’s as giddy as a tuba drinking session.

Please understand the eagerness; we were first-timers to Kalanggaman, Leyte’s virgin paradise and one of the Philippines’ top beach destinations. I would’ve said it’s Leyte’s best-kept secret, but the island is currently enjoying a healthy dose of attention from bloggers, travel writers, and the mainstream media.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Kalanggaman Island

cebu-pacific-logo

I’m sure by now you’ve read the many accounts of visitors gushing over Kalanggaman’s serene beauty. Let me just add that the island, in all its secluded glory, is the perfect getaway for the introverts and the reserved. Only a hint of Leyte and Cebu can be seen on the horizon. Those with castaway fantasies (and melodramatic tendencies) would definitely appreciate the isolation.

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

Now before you ball up your swimsuits, you should know that Kalanggaman is no glamping destination. Basic comforts in the island are, well, pretty basic, with only a handful of changing rooms and toilets. In terms of amenities, there are a few cottages here and there, a small multi-purpose hall, and maybe a treehouse or two. That’s it. Overall, infrastructure in the island is still down to the bare essentials.

Keep in mind that all boats leave the island before sunset, and won’t return until the next day. If you’re staying for the night, make sure you’ve made your pick-up times clear to the boatman.

How to Get to Kalanggaman Island

That said, access to Kalanggaman is still limited. To maintain the island’s delicate nature, only a certain number of people can visit the island every day. This gives this trip a sense of exclusivity. When you arrive at Kalanggaman, you gain a feeling that somehow you now belong to a very select club.

So how do you get admitted to this club? The short answer is, to get to Kalanggaman, you need patience. For something a bit more detailed, here are the essential steps we took for the trip.

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

  • Fly to Ormoc City . The city of Ormoc is the gateway to western Leyte, and flying is the most convenient way to get there. The city has its own domestic airport, though flights to or from Manila are not yet available. Cebu Pacific Air is the only airline flying to Ormoc . The flight is operated by Cebgo. For those coming from Manila or abroad, you’ll need to arrange a trip to Cebu City first, then connect a Cebu Pacific flight to Ormoc. There are other ways of getting there, which we will discuss below.
  • Travel by bus or van to Palompon . From the airport, go to the Ormoc van and bus terminal found just behind the pier across Ormoc City Park. Travel time from Ormoc to Palompon usually takes an hour and a half, depending on your route and mode of transportation. Fare for the van is from PHP 100-150. Bus fares are tad cheaper: PHP 50-60, but since buses stop over several towns your travel time will take significantly longer. Once you arrive at Palompon, your drop-off point should be the Town Ecotourism office.
  • Pay the fees at the Ecotourism Office . It’s located at the Freedom Park, just beside the Municipal Town Hall. Access to the island requires an entrance fee; the local government use it to fund the island’s conservation efforts. The fee varies. We’ll list down the fees in another section below. (Scroll down!) All fees can be paid at the Ecotourism office.
  • Get a boat . Aside from the conservation fee, there’s also the boat rental. Rental fees can go from PHP 3000 pesos for 15-seaters to PHP 4000 for the larger 30-capacity motorboats. There’s more value for those traveling in large groups. You can hire a whole boat for yourself, or wait for other tourists to fill it up.

The Visayan Sea is a fairly busy waterway, and many vessels travel through it: fishing boats, fastcraft liners, even large interisland cargo ships. A couple of friendly fishermen waved at us as we navigated through.

Finally, after an hour or so of nothing but the blue and the sound of the boat’s motor, we saw the island. I told you earlier about patience. Well, good things come to those who wait. Kalanggaman is nothing short of a spectacle.

  • Non-local high school student: PHP 30

Other Ways to Get There

Flying to Ormoc City is the fastest and the most comfortable way to get to Kalanggaman Island, but there are other ways too.

  • Via Tacloban . You can also fly to Tacloban and take a 4- to 5-hour van ride to the town of Palompon. Once in Palompon, visit the Eco-Tourism Office and get a boat, as explained above.
  • Via Cebu by boat . You may also travel by sea to Palompon from Cebu. From Mactan Airport, take a cab to Pier 3, where you may board ship to Palompon (P500, 4 hours). But this will take a lot more time.

In our case, we flew Cebu Pacific Air to Ormoc City via Cebu and stayed a bit in Ormoc, which we also recommend. Ormoc has its own set of attractions! Wee arrived at Ormoc during the height of the city’s Piña Festival, and we spent a couple of days in the city to partake in the festivities. By festivities we meant booze, tons of lechon, and of course, pineapples. Hectares of them. No wonder everyone was wobbly the morning we’re scheduled for Kalanggaman.

Other Tips for the Poor Traveler

  • Cebu Pacific Air regularly offers great deals year-round. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter to get updated with their latest promos.
  • Only morning flights to and from Ormoc are available, so plan ahead. Better if you include your Kalanggaman trip as part of a larger itinerary. To get a fuller experience, leave for Kalanggaman as early in the morning as you can.
  • If you’re not staying for the night, it’s advisable to perform your hygienic rituals before or after the island trip. Soap, shampoo, and detergents are strictly prohibited in the island.
  • Kalanggaman is far from the mainland, so mind your things and make sure that you don’t leave anything in the island. Not just your valuables, but also foodstuff, utensils, and leftovers.
  • Be very careful when exploring the island’s sandbars. They’re spectacular, but they come with a warning: the sandbars are prone to hazardous riptides. For your safety, avoid swimming in the eastern and western tips of the island at all costs.

A big shout out to David of the Ormoc Tourism Board , who had been very accommodating in explaining to us some of the more intricate details about the island. It’s from him that I learned the island was named Kalanggaman because of its bird-like shape. Langgam is the Waray word for bird.

Special thanks to our friends from Cebu Pacific for making this trip possible. From Mactan International Airport in Cebu City, Cebu Pacific provides daily morning flights to Ormoc City.

Awesome beach :) Youll love it when you see it. This island is such a natural beauty. Its not yet touched by those high techologies yet you will never regret coming here. Those blue water, white sand, the sky, the whole place is great.

Hi, We are planning to go to Kalanggaman next week. But we’d love to stay for one night on the Island. Is it possible to bring a tent? Because you have indicated that the infrastructure in the island is still down. Thank you!

RonTraveLife

Hi I’ll be going to Kalanggaman as well on Jan 24. And still researching on getting there.

Hi Gino, not sure if pede magreserve pero yep just call Palompon eco-tourism to inquire. Number is (053) 555 9731

Nina Poblete

Is there any food available in the island? Like “paluto”, or you have to bring everything?

Wala po. Bring your own food talaga.

Clay

I really don’t get the idea why we charge higher fees/prices to foreigners against locals.

Armie

It’s the same even in other countries. We visited Taj Mahal in India, they have different rates for foreigners & their locals. A bit higher for foreigners and that’s the real rate though.

Elmer Mole

It’s our policy to be good to our fellas since not all of us Filipinos can afford with this kind of luxury. And we salute Palompon Tourism for their kind-hearted consideration. Anyway, foreigners like you are great and generous and can afford anytime, anywhere. If you are interested to go out there you are perfectly welcome. MABUHAY! God bless

Me, either. One explanation someone told me (another destination in PH) was that the real price was the foreigner price but locals get a discount. I’m not sure if that’s true or if I buy that though. Haha

LJ

Hello, I dont see any flights from Cebu City to Ormoc through Cebu Pacific?

Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte

Kalanggaman Island: The Mesmerizing Sand Bar Island of Leyte

Kalanggaman Island is one of the most popular destinations in Leyte — and one of the most recognizable tourist spots in the whole of the Philippines. It’s an island featuring white sands and a long sand bar which can be seen during low tide. Here’s our trip to Kalanggaman Island including a guide + travel tips!

About Kalanggaman Island

Our experience at kalanggaman island, from tacloban, from malapascua island, cebu, boat to kalanggaman island, kalanggaman island faq, where to stay, kalanggaman island rates, travel tips, what to read next:.

Kalanggaman Island in Leyte

The tropical island of Kalanggaman Island can be found just an hour away from the port in Palompon, Leyte. It has a white-sand shoreline, and contrary to popular belief, there are two sand bars, not just one! There are limited facilities in the island, including cottages and small stores.

Its name is derived from the Visayan word “langgam”, which means bird, in reference to the island’s shape.

Kalanggaman Island used to be one of the off-the-beaten-path destinations in the Philippines . Sometime in 2015, photos of it started circulating in social media. Backpackers flocked to see the island for themselves and currently it’s one of the most established tourist destinations in the region.

Hali and I visited here in 2016 during Holy Week. We took a long road trip from Manila with various stopovers in the Visayan region before eventually settling our backpacks in this island.

Here’s a tip: Don’t go here during holidays!

It was crowded during our stay, but the good thing is that the tourism office implemented a daily tourist cap. So while there were many people, it wasn’t that crowded compared to other tourist destinations (*cough cough Sagada).

After arriving in the island, we looked for a shaded area to pitch our tent. Then we laid out towels under a large umbrella stand and passed drinks around our road trip companions, exchanging stories about our backpacking travels. Kuya Ram told us this is the beach life — enjoying good drinks with friends on a nice beach.

Afterwards, Hali and I went over to the famous sand bar at the end. But there were too many people there and it seemed like they were a fixture. So we just decided to explore the rest of the island.

Kat in Kalanggaman Island leyte

We checked out a stretch of rocky shoreline which is also the island’s snorkeling spot. We didn’t bring any snorkeling equipment, but we noticed that even in shin-deep water we could already see small fishes, black starfishes squeezing themselves underneath rocks, small crabs, and lots of snails. I have no doubt that the underwater scene is much better on the deeper parts of the ocean.

Kalanggaman Island beach

My favorite part of the island is the other sand bar at the end. It was a patch of sand separated by the island by shallow water. There were no other people here so it was quiet. We stayed in a cottage surrounded by wild grass and flowers.

Couple shot at Kalanggaman Island

By next day, Hali woke up before dawn to get a good photo of the sand bar. Sadly, there were already a throng of people there. So we just took it in good strike and enjoyed the rest of our time before heading back to the mainland.

So what are my thoughts about Kalanggaman Island?

If you’ve been following this blog, you know that I love beaches. In my opinion, Kalanggaman Island is beautiful — but you should have real expectations about it. It looks a bit different in real life than online photos and what others claim it to be.

For one, the sand bar is gorgeous, but honestly to fully appreciate it you need to see it from above — as in with a drone or a long GoPro stick. On ground level, it just looks like a regular beach area. Also, like other islands in Leyte, the sand here is white but not fine — it ‘s large and coarse, with bits of broken corals. It will hurt your feet if you walk barefoot.

I’m saying these because there were so much hype when we visited and we were even expecting fine-white sand like that in Boracay.

One thing that really impressed me during our visit is how the tourism office managed the island. I believe it’s a prime example of ecotourism . Every guest should properly register and there is daily tourist capping to avoid overcrowding. Before we went to the island, our boat operators gave us two garbage bags: one for disposable and the other for non-disposable items. To me, everything seems regulated.

In general, Kalanggaman Island is one of the best islands you can visit in the region. I recommend going here, especially on weekdays so you can enjoy it without the usual tourist crowd,

How to get to Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman Island is located an hour away from the main port in Palompon, Leyte. Here are directions on how to get there.

If you’re coming from Manila, you can take a local flight to Ormoc City, Tacloban, or Cebu.

This is the fastest way to Palompon. Simply ride a van bound for Palompon. Travel time is 1.5 hour, and fare is around P120 per person.

A lot of backpackers go to Kalanggaman Island via Tacloban because this province is connected to other neighboring provinces, including Biliran so it’s easy to get around.

From Tacloban, ride a van bound for Palomon. Travel time is 3 hours, and fare is P170 per person.

From Cebu City, there are different ways to get to Palompon.

  • ( Option 1 ) Head to Cebu North Bus Terminal and then ride a bus bound for Bogo City. Travel time is 3 hours, and fare is P140 per person. Then ride a tricycle to Polampato Port. Travel time is 25 minutes, and fare is P150 per ride. Once at the port, ride a ferry to Palompon. The ferry has runs once a day at 12noon.
  • ( Option 2 ) Ride a ferry or fast craft to Ormoc City. Then follow the directions for Ormoc.
  • ( Option 3 ) Ride a ferry vessel bound for Palompon via Cokaliong Shipping. Travel time is 5 hours, and fare is P320 per person.

Kalanggaman Island is a popular day trip boat tour from Malapascua Island . Travel time is 1.5-2 hours. Rate for a tour is around P1000 per person.

Once in Palompon, head over to the port. Register at the Palompon Tourism Office and pay the appropriate fees. Then ride a boat to the island; travel time is 1 hour.

Kalanggaman Island in Leyte

  • The best time to visit Kalanggaman Island is during the summer months, from February to May or June . It’s best to avoid the rainy season due to strong typhoons, especially from July to September.
  • Activities include beach bumming , snorkeling , and diving . There are also watersports available such as kayaking.
  • It’s advisable to bring your own food and water. Another option is to buy fresh seafood at the local market in town and have it cooked or grilled once in the island (outdoor grills are free to use). There are also sari-sari stores in the island that sell basic goods and short-order food.
  • There are cottages available for day tours or overnight stays. You can also bring your own tent.
  • There are clean shower rooms and restrooms in the island, but water is limited. No worries — you can wash up in shower areas back at the Palompon Tourism Office.
  • There is no electricity in the island.
  • Mobile signal is available.
  • Things to bring : food and water, beach towel, sunhat, eco-friendly sunblock, and a fully charged powerbank.

Currently, there is only one resort at the island: Jeter Resort .

The resort offers teepee huts for overnight stays. It also has a clean restroom and restaurant. Rate starts at P1000 for 2 people with complimentary breakfast. Other activities including snorkeling, kayaking, jetski, banana boat, and fat bike are also available for a fee.

Other than that, your next option is to stay in the town. Here are the most recommended ones:

  • Liezel bed-and-breakfast | Book via Agoda
  • Sergi’s Resort and Hotel
  • Breadfruit Traveller’s Lodge
  • Palompon Sugar Inn
  • Whispering Beach Mini Hotel

There are also a number of Airbnb accommodations in Palompon.

Here are the current rates ( Updated as of 2020 ):

If you’re solo or a couple, you can simply wait for other tourists at the port for boat sharing.

  • Schedule your boat trip early in the morning for smooth sailing. You can start as early as 6AM.
  • It’s best to go here during weekdays to avoid the crowd. Note that there is daily capping so there are only 500 people allowed per day. If you’re visiting on summer or holidays, it’s recommended to reserve weeks in advance.
  • On rainy days, the coast guard may decide to halt boat trips to the island depending on the weather. One of my friends had been in Leyte thrice and on all occasions the boat trips were cancelled! So make sure to get updated on the weather and check with the local tourism office on your booked dates.
  • I recommend staying here overnight if you can. In the late afternoon, most tourists are done with their day tour so you can enjoy the island for yourselves.
  • There are other tourist spots you can visit in Palompon (Leyte), including Palompon Eco-Terrestrial Adventure Park, Tabuk Marine Park and Bird Sanctuary, Masaba Falls, and Lantaw, as well as old churches and beaches.
  • There are similar island destinations in Leyte, such as Canigao Island and Cuatro Islas.
  • From Leyte, you can also visit neighboring provinces. I recommend exploring the waterfalls in Biliran or island hopping to Sambawan Island .
  • If you love visiting sand bars, check out our trip to Panampangan Island in Tawi-Tawi — considered the longest sand bar in the Philippines!

For inquiries and reservations, you can contact the tourism office at LGU Palompon .

Kalanggaman Island: Leyte’s Piece of Paradise (Travel Guide)

 alt=

It was another warm welcome.

By the time we stepped out of the coaster bus, the staff of the local government of Palompon, Leyte met us with their warmth and smiles.

They escorted us to the second floor of the municipal hall for a simple program and registration. It was actually a briefing before exploring the best kept treasure of the town, the world-renowned sandbars of Kalanggaman Island.

I was also excited for this island paradise. But surprisingly, I’ve found myself focused on the presentation. Moments later, the town’s Vice Mayor was introduced, stood before us and delivered her welcome speech.

Honestly, It was quite a different talk, not the usual speech we normally get from our usual politicians. She shared the detailed plan of tourism for the town. I must say, it has depth and backed up with facts.

In spite of their efforts in promoting their tourist spots like Kalanggaman, Vice Mayor was certain of one thing – environment protection and conservation. I remember eating, enjoying the sandwich they prepared for us (LOL!) when I began asking myself, “How? How it can be done?”

The answer came when the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of Palompon , Raoul Bacalla, took charge of the presentation. Once Kalanggaman was put on the spotlight among major networks and media outfits, there was an increase in tourists’ arrival resulting to better income. But still it was clear, there was something non-negotiable.

They wouldn’t compromise Kalanggaman for the sake of commercialization. The island capacity is only 500, so they implemented a system to control the influx of tourists. All must coordinate with the local tourism office prior going to the island. No walk-in travelers. They would decline you, turn you away if needed and if you insist in going to the island without following the proper protocol. That’s how serious they are in protecting Kalanggaman.

The wait was over. At the back of the municipal hall is the port where you can find the boats going to Kalanggaman.

We boarded a huge one together with the Municiapl Tourism Officer of Palompon, Ma’am Cleofe Rivera. She said that this kind of boat can accommodate up to 30 people for only Php4,000 (back and forth). All local tourists must register and pay a fee of Php150 for a day trip and Php225 for an overnight stay camping style. There’s no accommodation on the island, but you can find toilets for the guests.

After a bumpy 1 hour boat ride, we finally arrived. Witnessing the island from afar is already a sight to behold. We were all excited!

The pristine beach, the white sand and the unbelievable sandbars caught my attention. At that moment, the first thing I wanted to do was just go there, explore and walk on the sand or maybe just lie there and enjoy. It was like the beach was calling me. Until I heard the beat of the drums, signalling the start of a fantastic dance number.

Oh my goodness! The local government has really made this tremendous effort to express their warmest welcome to us. I was just expecting a nice and sumptuous lunch. I know food will always be my top concern. LOL! But what they did was just so over the top!

Kalanggaman Island

Welcome dance!

I was overwhelmed by the presentation. But I must say, looking at the beauty that surrounded me, it made me realize what the LGU officers told us at the program.

Environment protection. Responsible tourism. All these echoed in my mind as I looked upon this vast and unbelievable beauty. So this is it, this is the result of what they call conservation.

It was time for lunch. I would love to enjoy the food and eat more, but my mind was thinking of something else, my mind was drifted towards the beach and the sandbar. Well, you know that Kalanggaman is truly worthy when I started to prioritize it over food right? LOL!

While everyone was busy taking their lunch, I finally had the chance to walk along the sandbars and explore Kalanggaman. It was another awe and jaw-dropping moment for me. The same feeling I had when I first set my eyes on Calaguas Island, a few months back.

Kalanggaman has its unique charm. It was high tide so the sandbars did not show in its best form, but still, it was beautiful. The crystal clear water and the white sand was perfect.

Beach bumming is probably the best way to enjoy Kalanggaman, but hey there are a lot of activities you can try. One proof is the line of paddle boats on the shore, you can do some kayaking and stand-up paddling.

After exploring the long stretch of sandbar, I saw our group on the side of the beach for some Clam Seeding. The place was instantly filled with laughter when some locals suggested they can put all the huge shellfish into the water and do a race. All cheered for their own shellfish, but nothing moved. LOL!

To instill the value of conservation of the ecosystem within the island, a turtle was also released into the ocean.

After the activities, we still had some free time so I took another chance of walking into this beautiful stretch of beach. Then finally, taking a dip into the blue waters, it was relaxing, the best way to beat the scorching heat.

Kalanggaman Island

The JUMP SHOT! LOL! Thank you LGU Palompon for this awesome photo!

I just couln’t help but appreciate Kalanggaman’s splendor. The local government (with DOT) has been doing a great job at preserving this island and they deserve a commendation.

We all have witnessed and experienced the devastating effects of commercialization. Look at what happened to Boracay. Look at the imminent future of Calaguas as the first resort was built on the island. Kalanggaman is a proof that Tourism is possible without compromising the environment, that conservation is non-negotiable. This is a realization for us to start thinking long term.

They might shoo away tourists who do not follow the proper coordination but look at the long term, tangible effects – an unspoiled paradise with rich ecosystem that can still be enjoyed by future generations.

Where to eat in Kalanggaman

It is still much advisable to bring enough water and food in Kalanggaman. There are grilling stations on the island for tourists’ to use. There are a number of small sari sari store there but it’s a bit pricey because they need to transport the good to the island. It is still a bewilderment for me whenever I hear tourists complaining about pricey bottled water or food in an island. Hello? Try to transport those goods via boat from the town proper without additional costs? Can you do that?

So if you don’t want to actually spend more on food, bring your own baon ! If you’re going to do it overnight go for Adobo and those types of food so it can last longer than the usual dish.

Kalanggaman Island Tips

Again, the very basic advice is to bring enough food and water on the island. There is no potable water there, so bring bottled water or in a container if you’re a big group. There is a supermarket in Palompon. You can buy food and supplies there before going to Kalanggaman.

  • There’s no electricity in Kalanggaman. So make sure you have your power banks with you when you travel there.
  • Again, there are no resorts in the island. Camping or through tent is the only option there. If you plan to stay overnight, be sure you have your tent and camping gears. You can find some tents to rent in Palompon town. If you need help with that, the local tourism office can assist you.
  • Most of the boats going to Kalanggaman are big boats, that can accommodate at least 20 persons. So if you’re a small group, befriend some fellow travelers and join them to save on the cost.
  • To set your expectations, Kalanggaman is a paradise on its own, but the sand there is not as powdery as Calaguas or Boracay. Okay? So don’t expect that. You can fully enjoy the island by exploring the sandbar, and also enjoy some water activities. Snorkeling is one of the best! Bring your snorkeling gears and if you don’t have one you can rent there on the island for 300 pesos for the whole day. Some of my travel friends did that and they enjoyed the underwater world of Kalanggaman.
  • Shower and comfort rooms are available on the island. But these are very basic. Bawal daw po  ang maarte. Hahaha!
  • Cottages are for rent. If you plan to stay overnight, bring your tent and camping gears.
  • Cleaner and more comfortable shower areas are available at the Tourism office in Palompon. Most day tour travelers do this.
  • If you want to rent a cottage or gears on the island, bring enough cash okay? ATM’s are only available in Palompon town.
  • There’s a mobile signal and data in Kalanggaman but it is not that strong enough. But hey, I was able to post a photo on my Facebook when I was there. I was using Globe.
  • You have to be updated with the weather condition before traveling to Palompon and Kalanggaman. Tourism Office is not allowing boat rides when the weather is not that good. Always be informed and coordinate with the local tourism office.
  • Most of all, Practice LNT always. Be a responsible traveler. Do not throw thrash everywhere on the island. Bring it back to mainland and dispose properly.

May I ask if you, sir, are willing to provide us a lecture for our upcoming conference on environment and tourism? If it is possible, you can talk about the tourist behavior/practices towards a destination-both negative and positive. Given that you are an experienced traveler. This conference will be on February 18, 2016 in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

However, since this is a part-charity event, my team will only be able to provide you with a 1night accommodation (with food throughout the program) at Crimson Hotel Alabang. Thank you and we hope for your immediate response/acknowledgement of this comment. God bless.

Thank you for the invite. Please send me the details at [email protected] . I’m really interested. Now checking the schedule. Thank you

Hi! Nice to have read about your Kalanggaman Island experience. The place is so beautiful. I, myself, have always wanted to go there. Is it safe for a solo lady traveler to go there and can you please refer a tour operator?

' src=

All I can say is, you are one lucky guy Jon. Oh my good look at that beautiful stretch of white sand, and look at that blue water. It’s so beautiful it’s so surreal! I first heard about this island from Cai, since then I’ve been wanting to go and I sure as hell going to wait for a seatsale to get my ass there. I definitely approve of DOT’s conservation efforts to maintain the beauty of Kalanggaman!

Kalanggaman Island is very nice! We accessed it from Bogo, Cebu. It’s paradise indeed!

Hi there can you recommend a tour from abuyog going to that place with a 19months old baby? Is May a good time to visit kalanggaman island?

' src=

Hi Jon, we had just visited Kalanggaman Island this month and I had the exact same thoughts. That is, I was happy to see that the island is properly conserved despite the boom in the number of tourists visiting here. Just before our boat left the port, we were given two plastic bags where we can put non- and biodegradable garbage. The tourism office is also firm in implementing the daily tourist cap. 🙂 I hope other islands in the country will follow suit.

hi Don2 so pwede pala from Bogo,Cebu going to Kalanggaman.Hometown yan ni kuya Sam mo.Ganda naman ng lugar. Thanks for this post.

Hi Ate Nieel,

Kalanggaman is really beautiful.

Dati ate pwede pumunta Kalanggaman from Cebu, ngayon mas mahigpit na kailangan may permit before going there from Cebu, kung wala kailangan muna to travel to Palompon, Leyte

What a fantastic, beautiful place! With views and nature like these, I understand the urge for tourism to flood these beaches but it is great that there are conservation efforts and real awareness of how fragile ecosystems really are. People are often too shortsighted and greedy to see that the real wealth is this beautiful nature: I hope to read many more posts like this one, with positive, inspiring, sustainable travel stories!

Kalanggaman is truly a gem! I got the chance to experience the island back in 2014. That time you can still access the island via Cebu. It was already evening when we arrived, the moon was quite full, the sky vividly black. Even before reaching the powdery beach, the island was already showing us its beauty. The shallow water was glowing turquoise, the moon’s light reflected by the white sand floor. That night I slept with the soothing sea breeze, the moon, and the stars. The following day, the island revealed to us its wonder. We went snorkelling on the rocky side of Kalanggaman where we saw giant clams! Navigated the isle through kayaks and swam the pristine blue waters. Sadly, part of its sandbar was destroyed due to Yolanda the previous year but that didn’t devalue the majesty that is Kalanggaman. It was indeed a very memorable trip. I’m happy to know that the local government has put into its priority list the conservation of the island and I hope others would follow suit soon.

Kalanggaman Island was too different when we went there, few months after Typhoon Haiyan. I dont know if this is a good or a bad thing but during our visit, the island was too raw and unspoilt. I remember us pinching a tent since its the only means to stay the night. I heard commercialization in the area is currently in the works now.

kalanggaman island 1

Kalanggaman Island is located within Palompon which is a municipality on the west side of Ormoc City in Leyte. A bird’s-eye view of the island reveals that it actually resembles the shape of a bird. This is where the island got its name since the word ‘bird’ is ‘langgam’ in the local dialect.

It used to be known as a mysterious and enchanting place that not a lot of people want to visit due to fear of encountering mystical entities . After years of obscurity, Kalanggaman Island started getting international exposure when almost 400 passengers of MV Europa Cruise Line stopped over on the island for a couple of hours in 2016.

Kalanggaman Island is 753 meters long and up to now, it’s still uninhabited. Palompon’s Eco-Tourism Office only allows up to 500 tourists per day to ensure that the island won’t be exploited and its beauty will be preserved for a long time.

  • Flights to and from Ormoc are only available during the morning so make sure to plan ahead.
  • Practice precaution when exploring the island’s sandbars. They are magnificent but are prone to hazardous riptides. Avoid swimming in the western and eastern sides of the island to stay safe.
  • If possible, start your boat trip as early as 6 AM for a smooth sail. You might even get a glimpse of dolphins since they are usually visible around that time.
  • If you don’t want to experience rocky boat rides, avoid traveling from 12 NN to 3 PM.
  • Make sure that you have all your stuff with you before leaving the island since it’s too far from the mainland.
  • You can bring your own food to the island.
  • There’s no electricity on the island so don’t forget to bring power banks and fully charge your gadgets before the trip.
  • If you won’t be staying overnight, take a shower before or after the island trip. It must also be noted that detergents, shampoo, and soap are not allowed on the island.
  • There are no ATMs on the island and the nearest ones can be found in Palompon town proper.
  • There’s cell signal in the island but it can only be used for basic services like texting and calling. The data connection is very slow and almost non-existent. It must also be noted that Smart has the strongest signal in Kalanggaman Island.
  • There’s no potable water on the island, so make sure to bring a lot of drinking water for your group . The boatman usually just provides around 5 containers of water for every group of 15 pax.
  • Although there are clean restrooms and shower areas around the island, water can be very limited. There are shower areas with enough water at the Palompon Tourist Office in the mainland.
  • Make sure to only use reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Always be a responsible traveler. Never forget to follow and internalize the ‘Traveler’s Creed” which is “Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures, and kill nothing but time.” Make sure to bring a trash bag and take your trash with you when you leave the island.
  • You might get drenched during the boat ride so make sure to bring a few clothes with you. You can also use your swimming clothes on the way to the island so it won’t matter even if you get wet during the ride.
  • Since traveling to the island is restricted during unfavorable sea and weather conditions, make sure to check the weather forecast for your trip . You can also contact Palompon’s Eco-Tourism Office if it’s possible to travel to Kalanggaman Island during your preferred date.
  • Several tours or boat operators offer combined tours to Malapascua and Kalanggaman Islands. Make arrangements ahead for a hassle-free and smooth journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Kalanggaman Island is definitely safe for everyone. There are policemen assigned on the island to ensure the safety of locals and tourists.

However, you still need to practice precaution especially when it comes to swimming at the beach. Always ask which areas are safe for swimming since the waves can be unpredictable.

Making a reservation is usually not required since most tourists just reserve a boat upon arriving at the Eco-Tourism Office.

However, make sure to book a reservation by calling the office if your trip falls on a weekend, holiday, or Holy Week, to ensure that you’ll be accommodated.

Kalanggaman Island, Leyte | Palompon’s Sweetest Slice of Paradise

Palompon, Leyte: Kalanggaman Island is probably one of Leyte’s best-kept secrets because of its crystal clear waters, white powdery sand, and one of the country’s longest sandbars stretching from the tip of this 750-meter-long pristine island.

Slice of Paradise

Table of Contents

As the island got close by, I can barely hide my excitement. I have been seeing this island for many years on my social media feed, then at this exact moment, it is now right in front of my eyes. This perfectly reminds me of a paradise often seen in postcards.

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

This island off the coast of Palompon in Leyte gained fame in recent years because of its very long sandbar that will surely captivate anyone seeing it for the first time!

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

It was a little crowded when I visited Kalanggaman Island, the sandbar was already submerged underwater due to the rising tide at around 08:00 am. Moreover, what I liked about the island is that it somehow maintained its beauty of it, it is still devoid of luxury trappings.

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

At first, I thought it was named Kalanggaman for its white sugar-like sands, but for the Warays, it means something else. Certainly, Langgam translates to Bird in Waray since it is shaped like a bird from above.

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

Almost Devoid of the Trappings of Commercialization

There are no big resorts on the island and I even used salt water to rinse off in one of the restrooms in there. Additionally, the tourism office only allows 500 people per day as it is the island’s maximum carrying capacity.

kalanggaman island tours palompon photos

There is only one resort, the Jeter Resort which offers Teepee Huts if you want to spend the night. There are also basic facilities you can use during your stay.

As it is beautiful above, so is underneath the island. Kalanggaman houses a marine sanctuary that hosts diverse marine life from fishes up to the large colorful corals. Also, this is a famous dive spot for divers coming from Malapascua in Cebu.

While it is small measuring only about 750 meters in length, its beauty more than made up for its small size.  It is known for its long white sandbar which is one of the longest in the country.  Kalanggaman Island is a protected marine sanctuary with its waters home to a rich marine life.  As such, you get the opportunity to explore the colorful underwater scenery and meet all the creatures in addition to swimming and sunbathing.  Jeter Resort, the only resort on the island also offers other activities such as banana boat ride, jet skiing, and kayaking.

The island remains uninhabited and to continue preserving its beauty, the local government limited the tourists to 500 persons per day only.  Kalanggaman Island is devoid of big resorts and other commercial establishments except for some native huts being rented out by the resort.  Accommodations for overnight stay are not available but camping is allowed if you prefer to stay the night.

This attraction is located on Kalanggaman Island near the town of Palompon.
