The Tour of Britain is set to head through the Scottish Borders for its second stage.

Some of the world’s top cyclists, including Australian and Tour de France podium finisher Richie Porte, will race through the Scottish Borders on Monday 5 September.

The 175km route will see riders from 18 teams start in Hawick at 11am and finish in Duns.

The sprint finish in Duns’ Newtown Street is expected at about 3:30pm.

Councillor Scott Hamilton, Scottish Borders Council’s Executive Member for Community and Business Development, said: “The Scottish Borders has played host to the Tour of Britain on numerous occasions and each time the support at the roadside has been phenomenal.

"I have no doubt it will the same again next week.

“We are delighted to have been able to bring the race back for another stage start in Hawick, which provides a great opportunity to see the riders up close before racing starts.

"In Duns there will be the Tour Village and a big screen to keep up to date on the race as it winds its way across the Borders.”

Here is what you need to know about the route and where you can watch the race.

The Route will pass through:

Bonchester Bridge

Town Yetholm

Longformacus

Starting in North Bridge Street, Hawick at 11am the race will take the riders out to Cogsmill, where there is an organised coffee morning and free parking at the Cogsmill Community Hall.

Hawick Cycling Club members are also going to line the climb there, with other spectators where they aim to encourage people to make lots of noise as the Tour passes.

The race then heads to Bonchester Bridge and Jedburgh, where it will pass Jedburgh Abbey, before turning off the A68 at Bonjedward.

At Kalemouth the riders head for Morebattle, for the first sprint, and then reach Town Yetholm before heading north-west to Kelso.

After racing through Kelso town centre it will go alongside the River Tweed to the second sprint point in Coldstream.

Racers will then pass through Lennel, Whitsome, Allanton and Chirnside before the riders head for the coast, passing Ayton on the way to Eyemouth.

At Coldingham the race heads back west, with another sprint in Reston before the climb to Cranshaws and the Whiteadder Reservoir.

After a short stretch in East Lothian and a climb to Wanside Rig, the race returns to the Borders as it turns for Longformacus.

The route then sees climbs at Mainslaughter Law and Hardens Hill before a fast downhill stretch which goes past Duns Golf Club.

The sprint for the finish line will begin as the riders pass Berwickshire High School before a short uphill kick into Duns town centre and the finish line in Newtown Street.

How to get there:

There are a number of ways of travelling to Hawick, where stage two will depart from North Bridge Street at 11am.

The nearest train station is the Borders Railway station at Galashiels and buses can be taken to Hawick.

Public transport from the west is also available, with the Borders Buses X95 running from Carlisle to Edinburgh via Hawick.

The earliest bus does not arrive in Hawick until 10:13am.

Free car parking is widely available in Hawick, including at the Common Haugh car park, and in North Bridge Street.

Hawick and Duns to host the Tour of Britain’s Scottish Borders stage in September 3 mins read time

Tour of Britain Hawick

Over 100 of the world’s best cyclists will race between Hawick and Duns when the Tour of Britain returns to the Scottish Borders later this year.

Race organisers SweetSpot have today released more details of stage two of the UK’s most prestigious cycle race, taking place on Monday 5 September, including the start and finish locations.

The race’s ninth visit to the Borders promises to be an unforgettable sporting spectacle, featuring some of the best backdrops that Britain has to offer and a first-ever finish in Duns.

One year on from hosting its first stage start, Hawick will return to the Tour of Britain in September, and will once again be where the riders depart from. The 178-kilometre (110-mile) route will pass through Jedburgh, Kelso, Coldstream – all places familiar to the Tour – as it heads north east to visit the historic coastal town of Eyemouth for the first time, before turning inland for the finish in Duns.

The route’s toughest climbs are saved for the final 30 kilometres, including ascents of Wanside Rig, Blairdardie Drive and Hardens Hill. The top of the latter comes just five kilometres out from the finish, so expect a fast and thrilling finale to this stage – fitting given that the winner will triumph outside of the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum that celebrates the famed two-time Formula One World Champion.

The Tour of Britain first visited the Borders in 2009, when Peebles hosted a stage start. The last stage to date to finish in the county came in 2019, when Italian all-rounder Matteo Trentin triumphed in Kelso. On average, the net economic benefit of hosting a stage of the Tour of Britain since 2016 has been worth £3.5m to venues.

Tour of Britain 2022 stage

Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain race director, said: “So many riders told me that they found the Tour’s visit to the Scottish Borders in 2021 as beautiful as anything as they had seen while racing and I know what they mean! Given the Borders’ mix of historic towns and villages alongside the most spectacular of backdrops, we cannot wait to take the Tour of Britain back there once again in September and showcase it around the world on TV. But whether you’re watching the race by the roadside for free or tuning in at home, this is going to be a great day of racing!”

Sam Smith, Scottish Borders’ Chief Officer for Economic Development, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Tour of Britain again this year and have the whole of stage two in the area. Hawick was a fantastic stage start venue last year and it is great that we’ve managed to bring a stage finish to Berwickshire for the first time to showcase the region.”

Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at VisitScotland, said: “EventScotland is delighted to once again be working in partnership with the Scottish Borders Council to bring stage two of the Tour of Britain to Scotland in 2022, including a first-time finish in Duns.

“Scotland is the perfect stage for the Tour of Britain with great stretches of open roads and challenging climbs ideal for Britain’s leading men’s professional cycling race and is part of an exciting calendar of cycling events taking place this year as we build towards the first-ever UCI Cycling World Championships in 2023.”

Full stage details

An interactive stage map, SKODA King of the Mountains and sprint locations, full timetable, and local resident information will be released in advance of race day on Monday 5 September.

Scottish Borders to Welcome Tour of Britain and Tour Series in 2022

World-class road cycling will return to the Scottish Borders in 2022 when the area hosts the prestigious Tour of Britain and Tour Series events.

Galashiels will welcome Britain’s leading male and female cyclists for the first time when it hosts the Tour Series, the fun, free and family-friendly cycling event, on Wednesday 4 May.

The historic town, famed for its links to the textile industry, will host round two of the UK’s leading televised cycle race series. It will be the first time that the event has come to the Borders.

Stage two of the Tour of Britain – the UK’s most prestigious cycle race – will then take place solely within the Scottish Borders on Monday 5 September. The Borders has previously welcomed the race on eight previous occasions, including a stage start in Hawick last year, as well as a stage that started and finished in Kelso in 2019.

Both events are organised by SweetSpot, the award-winning company who are also behind the Women’s Tour cycle race.

Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain and Tour Series race director, said: “Few places lend themselves more to cycling than the Scottish Borders, owing to the mix of historic, unforgettable towns and stunning countryside roads. To be able to take the Tour Series there for the first time and return with the Tour of Britain once again shows the appetite for our world-famous events in the area. My gratitude goes out to everybody at the Scottish Borders Council for their continued support, dedication and passion.”

Sam Smith, Scottish Borders Council’s Chief Officer for Economic Development, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring back the Tour of Britain to the Borders again this year, and to be hosting a round of the televised Tour Series for the first time too.

“These will be fantastic occasions for the area and will bring in visitors and provide great exposure for the Borders, further strengthening our position as Scotland’s leading cycling destination.

“I’d like to thank our partners Live Borders and Energise Galashiels for their support in bringing the Tour Series to Galashiels and their commitment to help make it an amazing event for the community and visitors.”

Galashiels will become the sixth Scottish host venue in Tour Series history, with this new-for-2022 round taking place on a technical circuit that starts and finishes adjacent to the idyllic Bank Street Garden.

Riders will also pass by the Burgh Chambers and War Memorial, and the Great Tapestry of Scotland Visitor Centre during the 900-metre (0.6mi) lap that twists its way through the town, known locally as Gala. Initial information for local residents and businesses can be found at www.scotborders.gov.uk/TourSeries

Highlights of both the men’s and women’s Tour Series races will once again be broadcast on ITV4.

More details of the Tour of Britain’s return to the Borders – including the start and finish locations, and full stage route – will be unveiled on Wednesday 6 April.

ITV4 will continue to broadcast live flag-to-flag coverage of every stage, as well as a nightly highlights show, allowing fans in the UK to watch wherever they are. The race will also be shown in over 150 countries worldwide, in part thanks to the event’s partnerships with Eurosport and the Global Cycling Network.

Last year’s star-studded race was won by Belgian rider Wout Van Aert (Team Jumbo – Visma), with reigning world road race champion Julian Alaphilippe finishing third overall. A roadside crowd of over one million spectators resulted in the Tour of Britain generating £29.96m of net economic benefit for the UK economy, according to research by Frontline.

With the cycling industry enjoying a continued boom in the UK, there are a range of sponsorship opportunities available with the Tour of Britain and Tour Series for 2022. Packages range from the title partnership of the events to sponsorship of individual classifications, daily awards, and digital and broadcast opportunities. Scottish Borders

Destination guide to the scottish borders.

Gently undulating hills and lush river valleys punctuated with ancient castles and abbeys, the South of Scotland and Scottish Lowlands are a region of understated natural beauty.

Stretching south from the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh to the border with England, the southerly portion of Scotland encompasses much of the Scottish Lowlands and is sometimes referred to as the Scottish Borders region. Whilst the landscapes do not hold the drama of the Highlands, they are nonetheless some of Britain’s most charming and picturesque, home to rolling windswept hills, quaint market towns and some of Scotland’s finest fresh water fishing in the waters of the rivers Tweed and Clyde.

Once host to endless shifting borderland battles between the English and the Scots, the Scottish Lowlands are intrinsically connected to historic Scottish figures including William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots. Today, the region remains home to dozens of historic sites including some excellently preserved castle ruins, such as Hermitage Castle and Caerlaverock Castle, and a number of stunning medieval abbeys including those of Melrose, Jedburgh and Dryburgh. Dappling the hills is a wealth of more recent historic sites including the romantic town for young English elopers at Gretna, the Victorian town of Peebles and the UNESCO World Heritage site at New Lanark.

The Lowlands also provide a wealth of Scottish literary culture, in the East the more rugged landscapes inspired national poet Robert Burns whilst the west of the region is associated with Sir Walter Scot widely considered one of Scotland’s greatest novelists and playwrights.

Offering subtle beauty and an intriguing history, spending time in the south of Scotland and her lowlands makes for a rewarding Scottish experience.

Scottish Borders

The beautiful borders.

It's hard to believe that somewhere so beautiful was once a battleground.

Raids. Sieges. Battles. The Scottish Borders were once so different to how we know them today. Now, there's not even a single checkpoint or guard. The peace and beauty of this region are almost impossible to comprehend when you know its history. When you know what happened underfoot.

Today, the Scottish Borders are graceful. Grand buildings delicately decorate expansive valleys of summer greens, autumn oranges, icy greys.

On our tours of the Scottish Borders, you venture to the ancient sites of Hadrian’s Wall and Alnwick Castle. You explore graceful towns with beautiful ruins like Melrose Abbey, founded by the Cistercians in the 12th century.
