Welcome to the West

Here legends larger-than-life loom over landscapes sculpted in sand. Rivers tunnel through time leaving cavernous canyons in their wake. Geysers steam like clockwork precision and rocks balance, arch and bridge in whimsical formations. Go west with Tauck and you'll find evergreen giants, painted deserts, pink-hued stone citadels as you ride with cowboys, hike with naturalists and raft with guides passionate about the places they roam.

Yellowstone national park, seriously... there's no other place on earth like it – yellowstone national park.

There's everything else, and then there's Yellowstone; it's truly like no other place on Earth. Why? Because it sits atop the largest "supervolcano" on the North American continent – one of the hottest spots on the planet. It's called the Yellowstone Caldera, and it lurks beneath the surface, giving rise to Yellowstone National Park's host of gushing geysers, steaming fumaroles, hot springs, mud pot and more – nothing less than the largest concentration of geothermal features on Earth, spectacular in winter or summer. In an amazing setting such as this, pretty much anything you do – from a wildlife safari in the summer, to a snowcoach ride in the winter… or hike, climb, horseback ride, ski, snowshoe, watch a sunrise or a sunset – is something you'll never forget.

Yosemite National Park

Through a lens, brightly and darkly – yosemite national park.

What a young Ansel Adams saw through his lens as he trekked into the California wilderness more than 100 years ago – as John Muir did a half-century before him – has inspired countless visitors to explore its chiseled landscapes. Celestial bodies trump electricity. Running water falls from rocks. Residents are furred, finned or feathered. And skyscrapers with names like Half Dome and El Capitan are nature-made. Adams iconic photographs need no words or explanation. Even in black and white, they capture what he felt about places now immortalized for future generations.

Grand Teton National Park

Big sky, big mountains, big picture... grand teton national park.

Out here in the Great American West, everything is "big." For starters, Wyoming comprises part of "Big Sky Country"... where the heavens ranging above the region's vast grasslands, winding rivers and jagged mountain peaks do indeed appear to stretch on forever and ever. Then there are the mountains themselves – in this case the Tetons, crowned by Grand Teton (that's the "big" one that gives the national park its name; other peaks in the range include Middle Teton, South Teton, Mount Owen and Teewinot) – seemingly bursting right up out of the floor of the glacial valley we call Jackson Hole, to loom majestically over everything below.

Grand Canyon National Park

Coming to grips with the impossible... at grand canyon national park.

Surely you have stumbled upon some other planet... or at least it feels that way at Grand Canyon National Park. Your first glimpse of the enormous Grand Canyon strains credulity. What giants have been playing with the rock here? Or what cataclysmic force of the universe? Then the drama starts. Clouds, shadows, and the shifting sun keep transforming the landscape. As the sun flames in the west, canyon walls turn red while the giants paint the sky, creating masterpieces so beautiful they freeze you in your tracks. The Grand Canyon sprawls wide open, carved out by the Colorado River, revealing two billion years of Earth's history; here is where air meets land, where you meet what feels like destiny, with just the white-tailed Kaibab squirrel, only found here, as witness.

10 Best West Coast Family Vacations

west coast family tours

Dec 19, 2017

See recent posts by Courtney Elko

Some say the left coast is the best coast. And with warm temperatures year-round in California, national parks and mountains in Washington, and beaches and skiing in Oregon, we really can’t disagree. If you have a family of outdoor adventurers, you’ll especially enjoy a West Coast vacation, where hiking, biking, water sports and fresh air abound. Here are our picks for the best West Coast family vacations.

Bridges over the Spokane River and buildings at sunset in Washington

Spokane, Wash.

This Pacific Northwest city has a cool, modern vibe. The Spokane River weaves through Spokane , where things to do include everything from children’s museums to zip-lining. Families will love this city’s natural surroundings, too, with large parks and gardens, the Spokane Waterfalls, hiking and kayaking. Even skiing can be found nearby. There is no need to choose between the city or country when visiting — families can enjoy the best of both in Spokane.

Recommended Hotel: Hotel RL by Red Lion Spokane at the Park

Dubbed the “Outdoor Playground of the Northwest,” Seattle knows outdoor adventure, but also delivers an ultra-hip city vibe, with unique neighborhoods and attractions including Ballard and Fremont. Of course, a stop at the legendary Pike Place Market and the Space Needle are musts on a West Coast family vacation to Seattle. The summer months are really the best time to visit Seattle with the family, especially because the days are longer, with nearly 16 hours of daylight. Seattle has some pretty fantastic beaches to enjoy this time of the year, too!

Recommended Hotel: Hyatt Place Seattle/Downtown

Lighthouse seen during an Orca Whales Tour from Anacortes to San Juan Islands, Washington.

San Juan Islands, Wash.

More than 170 islands make up the San Juans , which, in the summer months, have nearly 16 hours of sunlight and little rain. Spotting whales and bald eagles is common in the San Juan Islands, and families will love to spend time kayaking in the ocean or hiking, biking or zip-lining in the forest. The islands can be reached by ferry (reservations required) or seaplane, so even arriving at the destination is part of the fun for this family vacation on the West Coast.

Recommended Hotel: Tucker House Inn

Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Cannon Beach, Ore.

The ability for families to walk everywhere in Cannon Beach is a great appeal for this West Coast family destination. Many of the resorts and vacation rentals are also within walking distance to the beach. The sand and Pacific Ocean at Cannon Beach itself is where you’ll want to spend the most time. If you visit in June, you may be lucky enough to witness (or even participate in!) the oldest sandcastle building contest in the country.

Recommended Hotel: Hallmark Resort Cannon Beach

Whether it’s ski or kayaking season, families will love to visit Bend, Oregon , on a West Coast family vacation. Bend is protected by mountains from most coastal storms, so it rarely rains here and there’s no humidity. It may be one of the few U.S. destinations where families can ski in the morning and mountain bike in the afternoon in the springtime! Everything is also only a short distance away when staying in downtown Bend. It’s convenient for families to stay downtown and walk to shops, restaurants, parks and the Deschutes River, but then drive 20 minutes to beautiful waterfall hiking trails and ski at Mt. Bachelor, about 45 minutes outside city limits.

Recommended Hotel: Riverhouse on the Deschutes

San Francisco

The City by the Bay is a must for families visiting the left coast. The Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, the cable cars, parks and museums – families can spend days taking in all that San Francisco has to offer. The weather can get very chilly (even in the summer) so remember, just because you’re in California doesn’t necessarily mean 90-degree temperatures. Pack accordingly. Renting a car can be a good idea, but public transportation and walking are also convenient. Maybe just do a few stretches before pushing that stroller up the many hills of San Francisco – just saying!

Recommended Hotel: Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf

Santa Monica Pier in California.

Santa Monica, Calif.

Kids will love spending time in Santa Monica , which is located just outside of downtown Los Angeles. The kids won’t know where to look first when visiting the Santa Monica Pier, with its amusement rides and iconic Ferris wheel. They’ll also love the nearby Venice Beach street performers. Take a spin as a family on the more than 100-year-old Looff Hippodrome. The legendary merry-go-round still features its hand-carved horses built in 1916 and the family fun remains the same!

Recommended Hotel: Shore Hotel

Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California.

Los Angeles

The City of Angels offers so much for families to do on a West Coast vacation. Beaches, museums, Hollywood history (and the Hollywood Sign itself), Universal Studios — the options are countless. Vacation rentals, luxury resorts and affordable hotels are all great options for families looking for a place to stay in Los Angeles . And you will definitely want to rent a car to maneuver around the city — just be prepared for that notorious traffic.

Recommended Hotel: The Garland

Big Bear Lake, Calif.

Located about two hours outside of downtown Los Angeles, Big Bear Lake is situated in the San Bernardino Mountains. The manmade lake is bustling with vacation rentals and resorts, so families have plenty of options for accommodations. Once you arrive, the 22 miles of shoreline are sure to relax the whole family, no matter the time of year. In the summer, Big Bear Lake is filled with days spent by the water, swimming, boating, fishing and biking. But the fun doesn’t end in the winter at Big Bear. Skiing, snowboarding and sledding take over once the snow falls in the mountains.

Recommended Hotel: Big Bear Frontier Cabins and Hotel

Less than an hour from the Mexican border, San Diego is our southernmost pick for an excellent West Coast family vacation. The weather is always pleasant and the food is delicious in San Diego – don’t miss the authentic Mexican fare in Old Town! Balboa Park and its attractions – including the San Diego Zoo – could easily fill an entire vacation. Nearby LEGOLAND, SeaWorld, La Jolla Beach and Coronado are not to be missed, either.

Recommended Hotel: Rancho Bernardo Inn

The USA West Coast: Ultimate Family Vacation

Dramtic Coast Line Highway 1 West Coast USA California

The West Coast of the USA really has it all when it comes to family vacations. From the beaches and theme parks of southern California to Oregon’s dramatic coast , volcanoes and vineyards, and the uniquely biodiverse Olympic Peninsula in Washington state.

We’d argue the West Coast of the USA is one of the best family vacation destinations in the world and a Globetrotter’s personal favorite! However, we’ll warn it covers a large area! From San Diego in the south to Seattle in the north, you are looking at about 1,250 miles, over 2,000 kilometers to cover even just sticking near the coast!

To see and experience everything that the West Coast of the USA can offer on one vacation is a tall challenge unless you have months to spend. However, there are plenty of shorter road trips you can make within each state – California, Oregon, and Washington – or how about traveling the coast one way by road and then flying back, or even taking part in the trip by train?

With so many options, it can be quite overwhelming when you are still at the planning stage, so before we dig into the details of our favorite West Coast vacation ideas for families, we’re going to take you through:

Driving the US West Coast

Us west coast train, flying the us west coast, what vehicle to travel the west coast usa in, which direction to head on the us west coast, more important tips for tackling the west coast usa, seattle, washington, olympic national park, washington, astoria, oregon, oregon coast, oregon, rogue valley, oregon, redwoods national park, california, fort bragg, california, point reyes, california, napa valley, california, san francisco, california, monterey, california, santa monica, california, disneyland resort, california, san diego, california, if you have longer – taking the inland route, further usa vacation inspiration.

How to Travel the US West Coast – Modes of Transport

By far, the most popular method of tackling the west coast of the USA is to drive. You can choose by car, camper or RV. The routes are effectively the same (more below!), but your nightly accommodation may differ.

You have complete freedom over where to make your stops, though naturally, it will take the longest amount of time to cover the west coast, and you will have fuel and car rental costs to bear in mind, as well as traffic.

The dramatic Coast Starlight is the Amtrak service that runs from Seattle to Los Angeles and vice versa. It is one of the most scenic train journeys in the USA and a spectacular way to see some of the West Coast highlights without a car. Taking around 35 hours in total, the obvious disadvantage is that you can’t get out and explore every highlight on foot and you’ll miss dipping your feet in the Pacific Ocean.

Coast Starlight Amtrak train covering the west coast of the USA

The train can be a quick and effective way to capture some of the country’s stunning natural beauty. There are 28 stops along the route where you could jump off and explore the big cities of the West Coast for a day or two before taking on the next leg; you don’t need to cover the whole West Coast journey in one hit! There are both seated and sleeper options that can be booked. You can have a look at the ticket classes, prices and routes using an online travel provider.

Flying is the quickest way to get between major cities along the US West Coast, but also the most expensive and least environmentally friendly – and of course, you’ll miss everything beneath! We only recommend flying if you’ll be driving one way and need a quick return to your arrival point.

Tips for Road Tripping West Coast USA

By far, the most popular option for families to see the West Coast, USA, in detail is to take a road trip. However, even this method throws up many different transport options and routes you can take. There are three primary routes to consider up the west coast:

Route 1 – The most scenic coastal route through the Golden State – but also the longest and windiest! If you have motion sickness sufferers, strongly consider if you need to take this route the entire way or just pop on for sections you really want to see.

Route 101 – A faster route that still takes you fairly near to the coast through California, then hugs the coast from the Redwoods in Northern California all the way through Oregon and around the Olympic Peninsula before finishing in Seattle. You will likely hop on and off this major route several times during your west coast trip.

Interstate 5 – The quickest route if you want to bypass all the twists and turns is straight down Interstate 5 which runs all the way from the Canadian border to San Diego.  It is perfectly understandable if there are windy sections and road closures to avoid or if you want to go directly between major cities and miss the coast itself.

If you hire a car, you will have to also pay for lodgings in each town you stop at.  This can range from inexpensive motor inns to expensive lodges, especially if you’re staying in our nearby National Parks.

A campervan or RV will give you much more flexibility in accommodation and should overall work out cheaper than the car/motel option, even if the initial hire cost and fuel are higher.

  • Don’t own an RV? Why not rent one just for your West Coast vacation with Outdoorsy ?

You can, of course, tackle the west coast of the USA in either direction, but our preference is always north to south. This way, your passengers can get the best Pacific Ocean views, and you will be on the right side of the road for all the highway turnouts and viewing points – and trust me, there are many!

Take the time to plan your route and your timings carefully. You will get so much more out of your West Coast USA road trip if you plan around North America seasons and weather, even time of day.  Undoubtedly, any US school vacation times are going to be much busier, but these do vary a little across the states.

Apps you will absolutely want for your trip along the West Coast USA:

  • Road Trippers – Super handy for plotting out your route, working out roadside stops, gas stations and calculating distances, as well as providing in-car navigation.
  • Tides – A lot of your trip you will no doubt want to explore the incredible beaches, but come at the wrong time of day, and you’ll be headed for disappointment! Study the tide charts in advance to get your daily timings right.
  • National Park Service – Great for plotting out your journey around America’s incredible National Parks, finding hikes, points of interest and things to do along the way.

Note that you will not always have internet everywhere you go! Make sure to keep local copies of any map app on your phone, or keep a good old backup paper map in your vehicle! You never know when there might be unexpected road closures (when you hit California, you can check your route in advance here ).

14 Highlights of the US West Coast for Families

Now on to the juicy stuff! There are so many incredible stops you can make along the US West Coast, and it was impossible to include them all, but here are the top 14 we think families won’t want to miss.

We’ve kept it just to those US destinations and attractions that sit pretty much among the Pacific coast; however, there are many more spectacular stops you could add to this list if you head just a few hours further inland (we’ll summarise these stops at the end).

Any journey to the west running north to south will almost certainly start in Seattle. From the iconic (but pricey) Space Needle to the century-old Pike’s Place Market. It is a great place to explore on foot, and there is plenty for kids to do before you pick up your vehicle (or board your train) for the next West Coast stop.

Seattle -US West Coast Vacation

Before heading south, we strongly recommend you head a little further west. You can cross Puget Sound by ferry to Bainbridge Island, then take an anti-clockwise loop around the Olympic Peninsula .

One of the most unique and biodiverse places in the US, the Olympic National Park encapsulates old-growth rainforests, snow-capped mountains, mesmerizing waterfalls , alpine meadows, stunning beaches , and dramatic sea cliffs – you’ve never seen somewhere so green! Needless to say, it rains a lot in the Olympic Peninsula, so pack coats no matter what time of year!

Maybe more nostalgic for the parents these days than the kids, but anyone who grew up in the 80s could tell you this quaint coastal city is home to the Goonies! Set on the Columbia River, Astoria itself is a charming little seaside town and the perfect place to break up your journey from Washington into Oregon.

Astroia Oregon - West Coast Road Trip

Watch the cargo ships on the busy waterway where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and visit the Maritime Museum, as well as the famous shipwreck in Fort Stevens State Park.

It was almost impossible for us to pick a favorite so we’ve summarized all of the Oregon Coast in one highlight. Covering nearly 600 kilometers/363 miles, some of the most popular and noteworthy stops include Cannon Beach – famous for Haystack Rocks, a dramatic sea stack best viewed at low tide, Sea Lion Caves, Thor’s Well, and Devil’s Punchbowl.

For overnight stops (or longer), look to stay at:

  • Lincoln City
  • Florence Beach
  • Find our complete guide to the best Oregon coastal towns here .

Note, those beaches further north on the Oregon Coast are busier as you get Portland day-trippers, too. Head further south if you are dreaming of that rugged and remote coastal escape on the West Coast dotted by picturesque lighthouses and plenty of fresh air!

It’s a good idea to pick yourselves up an Oregon State Parks Pass for your travels along the Oregon Coast.

You can continue along the 101 to complete the entire Oregon coast drive, or our recommendation once you hit southern Oregon is to detour inland, briefly rejoining Interstate 5 for a short while to explore the beautiful Rogue Valley.

The whole family can enjoy white water rafting, zip-lining, and cave exploration, then finish your day at one of the dozens of wineries that spot the region (wine lovers also won’t want to miss a stop in at Willamette Valley closer to Portland, but this is a great alternative if you’re trying to stick close to the coast).

Heading into California now, you’ll come to the utterly unmissable Redwoods National Park, home to some of the tallest trees in the world. The utterly awe-inspiring forest can be seen alongside several other state forests and is a superb camping spot for families on the US West Coast.

Redwoods National park - Northern California

Unfortunately, this section of the 101 can be susceptible to road closures, so plan your daily route before you set out.

From this point, there are a few more decisions to make, such as whether you continue to follow the 101 or hug the coast on the longer Highway 1 route. We’ve included some stops you can make taking both routes.

Not the largest of towns but a popular stop on the US west coast that the kids will insist on is Glass Beach on the Mendocino coast. Millions of colorful stones are scattered along the shore – nice to look at and pretty to hold, but please don’t take any with you so others can enjoy them for years to come.

Plan a US West Coast Vacation (14) Fort Bragg Glass Beach

Already the beach here looks quite baron compared to the photos that made the beach so popular. We’d only plan a stop at Fort Bragg if you already intended to take the scenic drive along this section of Highway 1 and the Mendocino Coast. It is otherwise a long and twisty detour off the 101 and could end in disappointment when you realize just how few colorful rocks are left.

A protected peninsular sitting northwest of San Francisco, don’t miss the historic lighthouse – but be prepared for a lot of steps! It’s utterly worth it for those spectacular coastal views, though. Another highlight is the immensely picturesque cypress tree tunnel.

Cypress Tree Tunnel - Point Reyes

Point Reyes National Seashore includes many hidden beaches and coves that are perfect for kids to explore and enjoy outdoor activities from kayaking and water sports to rock pooling. It is the ideal place to stop for a few days of relaxation by the beach in Northern California.

We’re going to take a small detour inland here for Santa Rosa, Sonoma, and Napa. Far more than just wine tasting (though certainly, that’s an added bonus!), there are miles of hiking trails, kayaking to enjoy on the Napa River, exploring the Petrified Forest in Calistoga and experiencing the famous Old Faithful geyser of California.

Budget an extra day or two if you have any theme park fans to catch Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.

Crossing the iconic Californian landmark the Golden Gate Bridge has got to be on every kid’s bucket list, right? San Francisco is one of the best cities for kids to explore; take a cable car up the steep city streets, see the sea lions at Pier 39 and enjoy lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf.

San Francisco - US West Coast

The Maritime National Historical Park is highly recommended. Older kids may even enjoy a visit to the notorious Alcatraz island on a day trip, or simply take a cruise on the bay and enjoy the stunning views (fog permitting!)

Monterey is a stunningly picturesque part of the central California coast that you absolutely can’t drive past! Famous for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the abundance of wildlife that lives along the dramatic coast, there’s plenty more to Monterey.

It’s a real all-in-one family vacation destination on the West Coast; in the right season, you can enjoy whale watching off the coast or on dry land, try tide pooling, and make an unmissable pit stop at Dennis the Menace Playground (aka El Elstero Park Complex). We love that there are so many great hotels in Monterey right on the beach .

Nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea is the starting point of the dramatic section of the California coast known as Big Sur . Here you’ll find the rugged Santa Lucia Mountains abruptly jutting into the Pacific, making for one of the most picturesque drives in the world, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge. The attractions of Big Sur are truly an unmissable part of a West Coast family road trip.

Now, one thing is for sure: there are dozens of beautiful beaches in southern California!

One of our favorite beach cities in southern California, from the iconic Santa Monica Pier and amusement park to unbeatable beach sports, cycling, and exploring Tongva Park is Santa Monica.

Santa Monica US West Coast Vacations

The beautiful white sandy Santa Monica State Beach is one of the best beaches for families in California and you’ll be spoilt with a huge variety of fun museums, restaurants, and that distinct Southern California vibe!

  • We have a more detailed guide here to help you explore Santa Monica with kids

How have we come this far talking about a kid’s trip to Cali and missed off Disneyland? Found in Anaheim, which is about 26 miles southeast of Los Angeles , we’d consider it a separate side trip to the rest of LA. it’s well worth staying on-site at one of the three incredible Disney hotels, especially if you’re traveling with young children.

There are two separate “lands” to explore, so you need at least two days to explore Disneyland California properly; even add on a trip to Legoland, California, a further hour south towards San Diego.

Want to combine a Disneyland vacation with the sandy beaches of southern California? These are the best beaches to stay at on California’s southern coast close to Disneyland .

You’ve made it! San Diego enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate, which makes it the perfect spot for families looking for a relaxing beach retreat on the west coast.

Beaches in San Diego - US West Coast

Not only does San Diego have some of the best family beaches in the country, such as La Jolla Shores, but you can also visit the acclaimed San Diego Zoo & San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the USS Midway Museum, and Balboa Park, to share just a few of this sprawling coastal city’s highlights.

That’s it for the coastal US West Coast route. Well, not quite! There are so many other small towns you can also stop at along the way, but if time is limited, these highlights could be completed comfortably in about 2 weeks, limiting your driving to under 4 hours a day. We’d, of course, recommend you spend much longer!

Now, our focus has very much been on following the Pacific Ocean coast, which ignores a vast number of attractions that can be found inland in the western states of the USA.

If you want to take a more inland route back through California and Oregon, make sure to include on your itinerary:

  • Palm Springs & Joshua Tree National Park , CA – Sunny days and desert adventures await in Palm Springs, with nearby Joshua Tree offering unique rock formations and stargazing opportunities.
  • Death Valley, CA – Explore the hottest, driest, and lowest national park in the U.S., boasting stunning landscapes and extreme conditions.
  • Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, CA – Discover towering waterfalls, granite cliffs, such as the iconic Half Dome, and pristine wilderness in one of America’s most iconic national parks.
  • Lake Tahoe, CA/NV – Enjoy outdoor recreation year-round amidst the breathtaking beauty of the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe. Winter sports abound in the colder months thanks to the high altitude of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
  • Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA – Witness volcanic landscapes, bubbling mud pots, and hydrothermal features in this lesser-known gem of a national park.
  • Crater Lake, OR – Marvel at the deep blue waters of the country’s deepest lake, nestled in the remains of an ancient volcano.
  • Bend, OR – Experience outdoor adventure and craft beer culture in this vibrant mountain town, surrounded by rivers, forests, and scenic trails – see our complete family guide to Bend .
  • Mount Rainier National Park, WA: Encounter towering glaciers, lush forests, and diverse wildlife in the shadow of the iconic Mount Rainier, an outdoor playground for hiking, climbing, and scenic drives.

Bonus Tip! If you’re taking the inland route, you’ll be s pending a lot of time in the great outdoors; we highly recommend investing in the America the Beautiful National Park pass to save on entry fees.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to United States?

It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.

If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorization before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).

If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.

If you have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on or after 1 March 2011, you are ineligible and must apply for a non-immigrant visa instead.

People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell phone while in the US?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

Does my trip to the United States support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to the United States directly support our foundation partners, Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA) and the Grand Canyon Conservancy.

Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA)

Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA) create inclusive, equitable opportunities for small Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) tourism businesses in the USA. Donations help CHEA provide access to industry-specific technical assistance, capacity building, and industry networks for small BIPOC travel and tourism businesses through their Diversity Tourism Academy (DTA). Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Find out more or make a donation

The Grand Canyon Conservancy

The Grand Canyon Conservancy is on a mission to protect the Grand Canyon National Park for future generations. With almost 6 million visitors to the park annually, the Grand Canyon Conservancy runs educational programs and immersive experiences that teach people about the park's cultural and environmental significance. Donations support trail restoration and maintenance, conservation and preservation of native vegetation and wildlife, and educational programs. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

11 Family Vacations Along the West Coast

West Coast = Best Coast. Stretching from Washington to Southern California, this diverse slice of America features rainforests, coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, urban centers, and everything in between. Whether you’re looking for an amusement park weekend with your tiny tots or a week of mountain exploration for older kids, use this guide to book the perfect resort for your next family getaway.

A Family-Friendly Yosemite Gateway Retreat

Two Bay Area dads launched Rush Creek Lodge after realizing there were no family-focused hotels near Yosemite National Park. Set on a wooded hillside just beyond the park’s Big Oak Flat Entrance, the 20- acre property features adventurous playgrounds with surprises like steep ziplines and wild slides. Indoors, families can grab a casual meal at the Tavern or play a round of cards in the indoor game room.

Book a main lodge room for smaller families, or opt for a spacious hillside villa with multiple bedrooms, a large seating area, a fireplace , a mini kitchen, and an expansive private deck with alpine forest vistas. You won’t find TVs though – Rush Creek keeps it old school and supplies radios and games for entertainment instead of electronics.

When you’re ready to explore the Sierra Nevada’s wilds, book a private guided nature excursion with the Recreation Program at Rush Creek Lodge. Choose short walks into sequoia groves or lengthy climbs up granite domes, and discover quiet trails beyond Yosemite’s hotspots. After your hike, soak tired muscles in the heated saltwater pool, and cheers to a day of adventure with cocktails (and mocktails for the kids) at the Pool Bar.

Rush Creek Lodge

An island beach getaway in san diego.

Seeking an island retreat without leaving the mainland? Head to Paradise Point Resort & Spa on Mission Bay in San Diego, California. With its bungalow-style rooms and tropical gardens, this 44-acre island gives you Caribbean vibes, but it’s actually right next door to Sea World. Stay to roam its mile-long sandy beach, take a plunge in one of five swimming pools, dine at one of five restaurants, or simply build a bonfire with your family on the beach.

Adventurous families can bike ride along the bay on nearby paths, putt around the golf course, or play lawn games outside. If sports are your family pastime, enjoy a round of basketball or tennis together. Beyond the resort property, find fast-paced fun at Sea World, see wild animals at the San Diego Zoo, or explore the shops of Old Town San Diego.

Paradise Point Resort & Spa

A mountain resort with an all-new aquatics center.

Escape to Oregon for a family retreat near Bend at Sunriver Resort . Set in the mountains along the Deschutes River, Sunriver is a place outdoorsy families can come to bike, float, golf, horseback ride, and play tennis together.

Choose to stay in one of 245 hip guestrooms and suites, or rent out a luxury home or condo—many with their own hot tub . If you’re bringing Rover along, don’t worry – pet-friendly accommodations are available.

Kids will love splashing in the new Cove aquatic center, built along the existing outdoor pool. This indoor-outdoor center offers year-round swimming, a zero-entry pool, a spiral waterslide, a large jetted spa, and a pool bar (for the adults).

Hotel Sunriver Resort

A classic washington resort in the cascade mountains.

Get away from it all in the Cascade Mountains with a rustic stay at Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort . The secluded location along Icicle Creek, just outside the Bavarian-style village of Leavenworth, features foothills to explore and gourmet onsite dining.

Use the resort as a basecamp and take your family apple picking in the Wenatchee Valley, or try zipline adventures and kayaking outdoors. When the snow falls, enjoy skiing, sledding, tubing, and even ice climbing nearby.

Guest rooms are uniquely arranged in clusters made up of several private rooms—perfect if you’re planning a reunion or other family gathering. You can also book the Rookery cabin, which sleeps up to eight in plush quarters.

Relax after busy days with a self-guided art walk or take a break from the kids and enjoy a deep tissue massage at Aspen Leaf Day Spa. Let teens explore the property on a self-guided art walk, or smell herbs in the resort’s organic garden.

15 Most Beautiful Places to Visit on the West Coast — From Charming Small Towns to National Parks

From Washington to California, these are the best places to visit on the West Coast.

Chelsee Lowe is a Los Angeles-based writer with an obsession with good eats and interesting stories. She regularly contributes to Travel + Leisure , TravelAge West , Ventura Blvd , and L.A. Parent , writing about food, family travel, and more.

Doug Michaels/Getty Images

As a California native, I say the following with obvious and admitted bias: the West Coast is the best coast. Urban oases like Los Angeles , San Francisco , and Seattle attract visitors from around the world for good reason.  However, if anyone asks me for itinerary assistance, I push for balancing city sojourns with slow escapes to the West Coast's most beautiful spots – none of which are smack dab in the middle of a city, in my opinion. Here are 15 of the best places to visit on the West Coast, arranged from south to north, that really show off the treasures of the region’s contiguous states: Washington, Oregon, and California.

Big Sur, California

Youri Beke/500px/Getty Images

The undulating 90-mile length of California’s Central Coast known as Big Sur is the stuff of travel lore. Much of the road is right at the edge of a cliff, so if you don’t have incomparable sea views, it’s likely only because you’ve been enveloped in fog. While I love a misty morning, sunny days here are spectacular. Enjoy iconic McWay Falls from above via Overlook Trail , explore Andrew Molera State Park , and trek along Pfeiffer Falls Trail . A stop at Big Sur Bakery is another itinerary must. Be sure to check that the road is open before you visit, as the road’s precarious placement means it's regularly impacted by winter rains and mudslides.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

John Elk/Getty Images

This coastal village measures less than one square mile and is the ideal destination for easy strolls. You will walk past fairy-tale cottages (note that people actually live in them), charming cafes and galleries, and even the soft-sanded Carmel Beach. Then hop on the famous 17-mile Drive , keeping on the lookout for endemic Monterey cypress trees as you circle the Monterey Peninsula.

Muir Woods, California

zrfphoto/Getty Images

Muir Woods National Monument is small at 558 acres, but its resident trees are not small at all. You will find towering ancient redwoods here, many nearly a millennium old and standing taller than 250 feet. Spend a couple of hours exploring below these mighty giants and reading placards to learn about the history of the land. The monument is less than 20 miles from San Francisco and is the most easily accessible redwood grove in the state. Parking reservations are always required, as spots are extremely limited.

Point Reyes, California

Point Reyes National Seashore is situated on a hammer-shaped peninsula about 60 miles north of San Francisco. Set aside a few hours for a misty out-and-back hike on Tomales Point Trail , where wildflowers and tule elk can be spotted, or try the short-but-stunning Chimney Rock Trail . Then grab oysters along Tomales Bay at an oyster shack of your choice.

Russian River Valley, California

Robert_Ford/Getty Images

The Russian River Valley is lush and green and even delicious, thanks to wineries, beloved cafes, and marketplaces. Walk the town of Guerneville, stopping for a meal at Big Bottom Market (Oprah’s favorite biscuits are made here), then trek around in Armstong Redwoods State Natural Reserve . Plan to float the Russian River (Steelhead Beach is a preferred starting point), and save time for wine tasting at nearby spots like Hartford Family Wines and Equality Vines .

Mendocino, California

Jon Lovette/Getty Images

There’s something particularly majestic about a teeny town on a bluff overlooking the sea, and Mendocino is just that. Grab coffee and pastries in this quaint and preserved historic town, then enjoy nature on as many trails as you can. Top paths are in Mendocino Headlands State Park for bird’s-eye ocean views, Hendy Woods State Park for redwood viewing, and Russian Gulch State Park for a beach walk.

Redwood National and State Parks, California

YayaErnst/Getty Images

This collection of parks protects the ultra-special redwood tree – they only grow in coastal California and southern Oregon, and they’re jaw-dropping in size (nothing on the planet grows taller) and beauty. There are miles of trails here to trek, but you might want to start with Tall Trees Grove Loop or Trillium Falls Trail . To simply hang out with and marvel at redwoods, head to Lady Bird Johnson Grove .

Thor’s Well, Oregon

Charles Wollertz/Getty Images

Thor’s Well is a sight to see. It looks like a hole in the ocean, where rushing waters sink to unseen depths; scientists say it's likely the remnant of a collapsed sea cave. Visit at high tide to get the full effect of this “drainpipe of the Pacific.” The area is also good for gray whale spotting in December and January when they travel south for the winter.

Silver Falls State Park, Oregon

Who knew Oregon had so many waterfalls ? If you’d like to enjoy these natural treasures, try the Trail of Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park . The 7.2-mile loop trail brings hikers through dense forest and – you guessed it – past ten waterfalls, and it’s pretty moderate in elevation gain (800 feet). Do the whole trip if you’re able so you can appreciate both the stretches on the forest floor and up the canyon. Start early to avoid crowds.

Willamette Valley, Oregon

BruceBlock/Getty Images

There are more than 700 wineries in Willamette Valley, Oregon’s expansive wine country. Build your own wine-tasting itinerary , and save time to go waterfall hiking (as mentioned above, you will find so many falls in this region). Then shop and dine in towns like Cottage Grove , Brownsville, Silverton, or McMinnville.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

This is Oregon’s most famous beach, and for good reason – the high basalt rocks just offshore pierce the landscape dramatically (puffins are pretty active here from April to July), and the cute coastal town of the same name sits just behind the sand. While small, it has everything you need, from breweries and ice cream shops to oceanside lodging options. Small nearby towns like Manzanita and Seaside charm visitors, too.

Multnomah Falls, Oregon

thyegn/Getty Images

This dreamy, double-tiered waterfall is set in Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area , which attracts more than two million people every year. Park near the base and enjoy the view from below (there’s a pretty footbridge at the falls’ midpoint), or hike to the top of the falls via a 2.6-mile out-and-back trail. Note that timed-use permits will be required beginning in May.

White Salmon, Washington

edb3_16/Getty Images

Also in Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, White Salmon, Washington is a perfect riverside town with all the ambiance and activity you could ask for. Expect supreme kite and windsurfing, mountain biking, hiking, and even a brand-new Wildflower Festival in May. You can also explore the area on a whitewater kayaking excursion.

Hurricane Ridge Trail, Olympic National Park, Washington

Spacewalk/Getty Images

Olympic National Park is nearly one million acres in size, and Hurricane Ridge Trail is considered one of the best routes in it, as the path delivers stunning views of the Olympic Mountains. The trail and its surroundings are set to reopen Memorial Day weekend after a big rehabilitation effort. Note that the trailhead is in the northeast corner of the park about 100 miles from Seattle, and it closes during snowy winter months.

Friday Harbor, Washington

MoniqueRodriguez/Getty Images

Washington’s San Juan Islands are breathtaking year round, and though the archipelago includes hundreds of islands, a ferry system allows for easy access to just a handful of them, including San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island. Friday Harbor is considered the hub of the region, and it's a great place from which to explore. Visit for orca watching, hiking in preserves like Lime Kiln Point State Park , and even farm and winery tours.

Traveling along the West Coast of the United States  had been in my head since the day I found out I’d be moving there for work. Who hasn’t dreamed about a road trip across the Western US? For me, the landscapes that automatically come to mind are the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Death Valley among others, as we have seen again and again in a bunch of movies.

Grand Canyon

In addition to nature, the American West Coast also offers you visits to symbolic cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

My favorite part of this trip was definitely the National Parks where natural wonders of this incredible country are concentrated within. I had been taking note of them on a  Western US  map   for a long time so that I could visit them as soon as I had the chance.

That’s how I started planning the 10-day West Coast USA road trip that we took in August.

THIS WAS OUR 10-DAY WEST COAST USA ITINERARY:

Our 10-day West Coast USA road trip itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Las Vegas.  Beginning of our 10-day West Coast USA Road Trip.
  • Day 2: Monument Valley + Antelope Canyon + Horseshoe Bend.  The most popular places in the Western USA.
  • Day 3: Bryce Canyon National Park. One of the less touristic national park in the West Coast USA.
  • Day 4: Zion Canyon National Park. One of the places we like the most during our 10-day West Coast USA trip.
  • Day 5: Grand Canyon,  a must-visit place on the West Coast.
  • Day 6: Mojave National Preserve + Death Valley,  the best of our 10-day West Coast Itinerary.
  • Day 7: Yosemite Valley, the best attraction in the Western USA.
  • Day 8: Upper Yosemite Falls,  the best hike of our West Coast America road trip.
  • Day 9: Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. You cannot skip this highlight of West Coast USA:

One of the first things I am sure you will be wondering about is how long a West Coast trip could take. My opinion is that you could be discovering the American West Coast for months and would still have things to do.

Death Valley – Zabriskie Point

When looking at a West Coast USA map, it may initially seem that the best tourist destinations are close to each other. However, distances in this country are huge, and you will spend a lot of time on the road during your trip.

Keep in mind that the US public transportation system is very scarce outside of the big cities, so the only practical option is to rent a car and prepare for a West Coast USA driving holiday.

On our West Coast USA road trip, more than ¼ of the trip was spent driving and still, along with the Canadian Rockies trip , it was one of the best trips of our life.

Another highly recommended option is to take a West Coast RV trip , as this country offers all kind of facilities for those who like to travel with their motorhome. You can check the best RV rental companies in the USA here.

Although it takes a long time to travel across the West Coast in depth, if you don’t have too many days or prefer to combine them, I encourage you to spend in West Coast America at least 10 days.

driving routes west coast usa grand canyon

Grand Canyon – Plateau Point

There are thousands of West Coast USA tours you can take, so the first thing you have to choose is a few must-see places. It may seem complicated to plan this trip at first, especially when you do not have much time.

To help you choose your perfect West Coast America itinerary, you will discover the main tourist attractions in this section. Then, you can design the West Coast USA holiday itinerary that best suits your needs.

I suggest that as you read through this article, write down  the things to do in West Coast America  that interest you most on a map to help determine the best itinerary.

SAN FRANCISCO

If you like to visit cities, one of the places you cannot miss on the West Coast America is San Francisco. This popular city of California, is characterized by the steep slopes and the well-known Lombard street.

The most popular thing to do in San Francisco is visiting the Golden Gate Bridge, one of the most famous bridges in the US and a classic in many American films, as seen in Godzilla and Superman.

In addition, another interesting activity to do is visiting the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary whose best-known prisoner was Al Capone. It was said that nobody could escape from this maximum-security prison island since the only way was by swimming almost two kilometers in cold and treacherous waters.

If you are visiting this city, stay in one of the best hotels in San Francisco.

Las Vegas,  also known as “Sin City”, is one of the American classics famous for its countless casinos, open container laws (aka public drinking), and legalized prostitution in nearby counties.

The largest city in the state of Nevada welcomes both domestic and global tourism, where vice is a right. It is not surprising to hear the old saying: What happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

Welcome Las Vegas

Whether you like gambling or not, it is a must-see Western American city. It is also a good place to celebrate your (fake) wedding if being married by Elvis is also one of your dreams. Here you can find the ultimate list of things to do in Las Vegas.

If you are visiting this city make sure you know where to stay in Las Vegas , since its hotels are some of the most amazing in the World.

Do not miss our Guide TO THINGS to do in las vegas

  • Los Angeles

Los Angeles , also known as LA, is the most populous city on the West Coast of USA. The City of Broken Dreams and Hollywood stars is located in California.

The Walk of Fame and the Hollywood sign are probably the main tourist attractions in Los Angeles , although a visit to Santa Monica , the beach where Baywatch was filmed, is also recommended.

Another place of interest is the Warner Bros. studios , where you can visit the film sets of a lot of movies, as well as Venice , where the canals remind you of those from the Italian city with the same name.

LA is a stop that you cannot miss on your 10-day West Coast US trip if you happen to enjoy both cities and film. You can find where to stay in Los Angeles here.

Do not miss our Guide TO THINGS TO DO IN LOS ANGELES

Grand canyon.

If we had to choose just a single place to start, visiting the Grand Canyon  would probably be the first that we recommend to do in West Coast USA.

The Grand Canyon is in Arizona and was shaped by the Colorado River over millions of years. In some points, the Canyon reaches a depth of more than 5250 feet.

Grand Canyon – Helicopter Tour

If you don’t have much time, taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is a good option, as we told you in that article about our experience. However, if you have several days, I advise going down the canyon  through one of the many different hikes to discover the Colorado River.

Do not miss our Guide TO THINGS TO DO IN GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK and best places to stay in Grand canyon

Havasu falls.

If you like adventure, visiting the Havasu Falls is an essential of West Coast USA.

The Havasu Falls, along with others in the area, belong to the Havasupai Indian Reservation and are guarded by a tribe of Native Americans. They are inaccessible by car, so you must be in excellent physical condition to visit as you will be hiking in and out.

Plan well in advance for your visit, since you will need a permit that usually runs out shortly after the beginning of the  reservation  period which starts in February of each year. In addition to the permit, you will have to book a camping spot, as it is mandatory to stay there when visiting the falls.

SANTA BARBARA

Back at the coastal area, Santa Bárbara, located 150 kilometers north of Los Angeles, can be another interesting stop.

The main beach largely resembles Santa Mónica, except Santa Bárbara is not as popular.

However, Santa Bárbara is not just a beach: its architecture with Hispanic colonial roots is an important tourist attraction.

MONUMENT VALLEY

Between Utah and Arizona, Monument Valley is another one of the supernatural landscapes in the American West. It is a huge valley where very interesting geological formations rose with reddish colors. This was also a scene featured in many classic western films.

10 day west coast usa self drive itinerary monument valley

Monument Valley

This desert valley is located within the Navajo Nation, a territory that belongs to the Navajo natives who are responsible for both maintenance of the reserve and collection of entrance fees, which is not included in the US National Parks pass.

The best time to photograph the valley is during sunrise when the sun is behind the monuments, or during sunset when the monuments are illuminated by the last rays of the sun. In addition, there are different hiking trails that bring you closer to the main monuments of the valley, or you can even take a Jeep tour with one of the Navajo guides.

Page: antelope canyon and horseshoe bend.

Page is a town inside the Navajo Indian Reservation, located in Arizona.

The most interesting attraction here is the Antelope Canyon , a geological feature formed by consecutive floods throughout history, which eroded narrow labyrinths of sandy rock into its terrain.

In addition, if you visit Page, you cannot miss a sunset in  Horseshoe Bend, which is named after its shape. It is probably the most famous bend of the Colorado River.

Here we leave you the best guide to know where to stay in Page.

The Wave in Arizona is another attraction to see in Western America.

To see this solidified wave-shaped dune, you must have a permit issued  four months in advance and by lottery (only 20 visitors per day are allowed).

It is one of the few virgin wonders that remain in the United States, so if you missed the date of the draw, it is always a good idea to check if someone has canceled his or her tour on the calendar. Visit this booking website both to participate in the lottery and to check the calendar.

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

Bryce Canyon National Park is a reserve located in Utah and is popular for the peculiar rock formations also known as “Hoodoos”. This park should be included in any Western US National Parks itinerary.

Due to the reddish color of the terrain, the best time to contemplate the main amphitheater viewpoint is at sunrise and sunset.

Bryce Canyon

There are also several hiking trails that will take you through the formations, where you can discover some with very interesting forms and names like Thor’s Hammer or Queen Victoria.

Close to the Mexican border, we will find San Diego, the second largest city in the state south of Los Angeles

This city is a good stop on your 10-day West Coast US road trip if you are more interested in beach areas. La Jolla Cove is the most popular beach and you can find all kinds of wildlife including sea lions there.

In addition to the beach, there are other places of interest, such as Old Town San Diego, where you can find original buildings of the first Spaniards that arrived here, and Balboa Park, where many museums are concentrated, or the Coronado Island , where you can find the best views of the city.

ZION NATIONAL PARK

In Utah, one of the most important landmarks of the state is  Zion National Park, where the main interest here is an 800-meter-deep canyon carved into the reddish terrain for 24 kilometers by the Virgin River.

There are different hikes that you can take in this park. One of the most popular is Angels Landing, where you can get a full view of the canyon after three hours of hiking and up the Via Ferrata section.

backpacking the west coast usa zion national park 10 days

Zion Canyon

Another longer route is The Narrows , which can be completed in 8 hours or done over several days. The route goes through the narrow gorges carved in by the virgin river, so you always need to check river flow the day before at the visitor’s center, and also to get water shoes.

Do not miss THE THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO IN zion national park and WHERE TO STAY IN ZION NATIONAL PARK

Joshua tree national park.

Located in a desert area in southern California, Joshua Tree National Park stands out for its unique rocks and mountain shapes.

Although its name comes from the unique Joshua Tree , what makes this park really interesting are the infinite rock-climbing possibilities .

Whether or not you are a climber, if you decide to visit Joshua Tree National Park on your West Coast USA trip over 10 days, you will experience the feeling of finding yourself on another planet.

DEATH VALLEY

On your 10-day West Coast America self-driving tour, you cannot miss the Death Valley that is located in California.

Death Valley

This immense desert is famous for Badwater, a dry area with the highest negative elevation within North America, situated at 262 feet below sea level. In addition, it is one of the hottest places on earth during summer, with a maximum recorded temperature of 58ºC.

Arches national park.

Arches National Park , located in Utah, has the highest concentration of stone arches in the world, however, there is no record of how many arches there are in this extension. This is the reason why it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit in Utah.

In addition, we can find another type of geological formations that defy gravity here, such as the Balanced Rock, a rock that seems to be falling at any time, yet has been standing for thousands of years in the same position.

The best way to go across Arches National Park is through a park ranger-guided tour that takes you to the purest and most virgin area of the park, where you cannot access on your own. You can book it here.

This park is one of the most acclaimed by photographers since the impossible shapes of the arches are very easy to use in any composition.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

An essential stop in West Coast USA is Yosemite National Park , located in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California.

This park is remarkable for two of the most important climbing sites in the United States and the world: the big granite walls of El Capitan and the Half Dome. In addition, we can find the American Giant Sequoia, one of the largest trees in the world, as well as extensive fauna that includes raccoons and black bears in this park.

If you are a lover of nature, outdoor activities, and camping , this is surely going to be one of your favorite places near West Coast of the United States.

Sequoia national park.

In Sequoia National Park, you can find the largest concentration of giant sequoias in the world. These are grouped within what is known as the Giant Forest.

The park is located about 10000 feet above sea level, a critical altitude for this type of trees to grow. However, it may be closed during the winter because of the snow.

In addition, here we can find the giant sequoia known as General Sherman standing at 275 feet. While it is the largest single-stem tree, the Hyperion , located in Redwood National Park, California, stands taller at 379 feet as the tallest living tree known in the world.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is the oldest national park in the United States. It stands out for the incredible volcanic activity in the area and for the abundant fauna that inhabits the park: buffalo, grizzly bears, black bears, moose… If you want to enjoy the authentic American wildlife and landscapes with a smell of sulfur taken from another world, Yellowstone is an essential place to visit on the American West Coast.

things to do in Yellowstone National Park West Coast USA in 10 days

I didn’t visit it during my first trip to the West Coast in the United States in 10 days, but during my next trip in which I toured Yellowstone and Grand Teton for 10 days, a great plan if you are looking for an alternative itinerary.

Grand teton national park.

The mountains of Grand Teton National Park are one of the most haunted landscapes by photographers on the West Coast. If you like wildlife, hiking, and want to flee the typical 10-day US West Coast itineraries , I recommend visiting this national park that promises a quiet vacation away from the masses even in peak tourist season.

things to do in West Coast USA in 10 days grand teton

Grand Teton adjoins Yellowstone National Park, so taking a 10-day tour of the US West Coast combining these two parks is quite popular.

Our 10-day west coast usa itinerary.

As we stated above, our West Coast USA trip was focused on national parks and all the natural wonders of this area in North America.

Cities in the west coast are for sure some interesting destinations, but, without a doubt, if we had had more than 10 days to travel the American West Coast, we would have kept exploring the natural places that this country offers, each one so different and full of contrasts.

DAY 1 – West Coast America Trip: FLIGHT TO LAS VEGAS

We arrived in Las Vegas at noon, picked up the rental car and made a quick route to see the highlights of the city.

After a mandatory stop to make the classic photo with the Welcome Las Vegas sign, we headed to Monument Valley (6 hours driving) where we spent our first night.

DAY 2 – West Coast America Trip: DAWN IN MONUMENT VALLEY + ANTELOPE CANYON + HORSESHOE BEND

We photographed the sunrise in Monument Valley to see the incredible geological formations of the Navajo Reservation tinted in beautiful reddish colors.

DAY 3 – West Coast America Trip: BRYCE canyon NATIONAL PARK

We woke up in Bryce Canyon National Park , where we took pictures of the twilight from Sunrise Point overlooking the amphitheater.

In the afternoon, we drove 4 hours to the next stop on our 10-day Western US trip.

DAY 5 – WEST COAST AMERICA TRIP: GRAND CANYON

We watched the sunrise at the Grand Canyon from Mather Point in probably the most epic light display we have ever seen during a sunrise.

Grand Canyon (Our trip to West Coast USA for 10 days)

In the morning we take this tour , as we tell you in this article about Grand Canyon helicopter rides . Without a doubt, I enjoyed my visit the most.

In the afternoon, we descended the first section of the Bright Angel Trailhead trail.

In the evening we drove to the next stop of our 10-day Western US trip, Mojave National Preserve (4 hours driving), where we spent one of the best nights of our life camping in the wild desert.

We arrived at Yosemite National Park where we set up a bivouac to spend the night in order to get accommodation the next morning at the historic Camp 4.

This day we drove a total of 10 hours, more driving hours than any other day of the entire trip.

DAY 7 – WEST COAST AMERICA TRIP: YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Once settled in Yosemite National Park valley we went to discover the main viewpoints of the valley, from which we would photograph the last sunrises and sunsets of our 10-day trip to the West Coast USA.

We took the opportunity to enjoy the real camp life,  cooked on the bonfire at night and raccoon watched with our campmates so they didn’t eat our food.

DAY 8 – WEST COAST AMERICA TRIP: YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

On the eighth day, we did the most strenuous hike of our 10-day West Coast USA trip. We climbed to the Upper Yosemite Falls, where we had a bath in one of its natural pools.

In the afternoon we took refuge in the tent as a hail storm fell – remember that weather in Yosemite, like any high mountains, is quite unpredictable even during summer season.

DAY 9 – WEST COAST AMERICA TRIP: YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

On our 9th day, we decided to try one of the small hiking trails in Yosemite National Park, such as the hike that takes you to Bridal Veil Falls or the Taft Point viewpoint.

In the afternoon we visited Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias, where we could see these giant trees.

DAY 10 – WEST COAST AMERICA TRIP: FLIGHT BACK FROM SAN FRANCISCO

We left Yosemite National Park to head to San Francisco , where we took our return flight home.

Our initial idea was to have the last day to discover the city. However, we liked Yosemite so much that we ended up leaving just enough time to catch the flight back. It took us 4 hours to get to the airport.

How to plan an self-drive trip to the Western US

Although many travel agencies offer West Coast USA holiday packages, this destination seems more appropriate to be planned on your own (unless you are interested in photography and decide to take a photo tour to the West Coast America ).

In any case, we will explain step by step how you can plan a trip to the West Coast USA on your own in this section:

  • Choose your best West Coast USA itinerary
  • Plan how to get to West Coast USA
  • Get your US tourist visa
  • Hire the best travel insurance for traveling to the United States
  • Book a rental car
  • Buy America the Beautiful Pass to enter the US National Parks for free
  • Book the best accommodation  on the West Coast

HOW TO CHOOSE THE best West Coast USA itinerary

From the previous section where we highlighted the best places to visit in Western US, choose 8 (if taking a 10-day West Coast road trip) or 15 places (if taking a 20-day trip) that interest you most.

Jot them down on a map of  West Coast USA (I suggest using  Google MyMaps ).

Connect the different points and check on our map below to see if there is any tourist attraction that is on your way or that you can easily reach.

Finally, check that the driving hours are compatible with the itinerary or else leave them out of your list.

driving hours west coast usa road trip

Driving in the West Coast USA

Do not be frustrated, no matter how long you stay on the West Coast, you will always leave something to explore for the next trip 😉

how to get to the West Coast of USA

In order to define our itinerary, we must know how to get to the Western US.

The best way is by flying to one of the following three airports:

  • San Francisco

If you want to find cheap flights to the West Coast , the best time to book them is 3 months in advance. You can find here the best cheap flights hacks . My favorite search engine is Kiwi.com.

Also, if you want to visit too many places in the West and do not have much time, I suggest that you do a one-way trip , starting at a different airport from where you will return home through. This will increase the travel budget a bit, but you don’t get to travel to the Western US every day, do you?

VISA FOR THE UNITED STATES

There are two ways to travel as a tourist to the United States. If you belong to one of these countries you can travel to the US without a visa, but must obtain a travel authorization called “ESTA”.

HOW TO PROCESS THE ESTA

The ESTA is very easy to obtain. Simply fill out the application form on iVisa and you will receive the approval in about 6 hours by email.

We have a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the ESTA to the USA.

HOW TO PROCESS TOURIST VISA B2

If you do not have a passport from one of the countries mentioned above, you need a B2 visa to travel as a tourist to the United States.

This type of visa is more difficult to obtain. In addition to preparing the required documentation which proves that you are not going to travel to the United States with the intention of living or working, you will have to go through an interview at the embassy.

A more extensive explanation of how to process this visa can be found on the US Department of State website.

TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR THE UNITED STATES

Living in the USA, I know how important is to have good travel insurance for the USA. Since health care cost in this country is very high, hospitalization without insurance can easily make your bill rise above $100,000.

So when we moved here, we bought long-stay travel insurance , although we are currently using annual multi-trip insurance.

honeymoon west coast usa death valley

Death Valley dunes

Although I always recommend buying the best travel insurance wherever you go, you must have extraordinary coverage for the US (never consider hiring anything that covers below $30,000 if you travel to the United States).

You can get the best quality-price insurance with Heymondo .

western USA car rental

As we have said, the only practical way to travel the Western United States is by renting a car.

west coast usa car rental death valley road trip

Driving in Death Valley

If you do not have too much time, consider taking a  one-way instead of a round-trip  along the West. We picked up the car in Vegas and left it in San Francisco. Although this meant an increase in the budget because of the drop off-fee, we were able to visit more places during our 10-day West Coast trip.

The cheapest way to rent a car is using Rentalcars. However, do not hire the insurance when making your online booking: wait to pick up the car at the counter to hire the insurance.

ANNUAL NATIONAL PARKS PASS – AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

If you are planning a Western US National Parks itinerary, I recommend that you buy an annual America the Beautiful pass.

This pass allows access to all US National Parks, as well as other state parks.

The pass is valid for one year from when it is purchased and covers entry for one vehicle with up to 5 passengers. Display pass by hanging it over the rear-view mirror).

In addition, the pass is issued for two owners who must sign behind the card to use. A very good option is to buy the annual pass, leave one signature blank, and resell it to a second owner at the end of your Western USA tour.

Even if you don’t resell the pass, you will get your money’s worth just by visiting 3 or 4 National Parks (Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Yosemite …).

The pass can be purchased online from here or directly at the ticket office of the first national park you visit.

ACCOMMODATION ON THE WEST COAST US

It is difficult to find cheap and very good quality hotels at the same time on West Coast America. Therefore we will try to help you by listing the best places to stay, considering different budgets, tastes, and needs.

monument valley milky way tend campings best places to stay in west coast usa

Best accommodation in West Coast USA

Keep in mind that accommodation will be one of the major expenses of your trip to  West Coast America. On the other hand, sometimes a good hotel can even be one of the best attractions you can enjoy during your trip.

WHERE TO STAY IN GRAND CANYON

If we visit the South Rim, the most touristic edge of the Grand Canyon, it is quite important to stay in the Grand Canyon Village, since two of the main attractions of this jewel of Western US is their sunrise and sunset. So, the closer we are to the edge, the easier it will be for us.

We camped in the Grand Canyon, at the  Mather Campground on the South Rim.

If you prefer to stay at a hotel, all accommodations at Grand Canyon Village are run by the company   Xanterra ,  and you can make reservations on whose website.

WHERE TO STAY IN PAGE

  • Hyatt Place Page Lake Powell: This hotel is located in the center of Page. As it is highly valued, you will have to book it well in advance, since rooms tend to run out being such a small and tourist place at the same time.
  • Country Inn & Suites by Radisson: Without a doubt the best hotel in Page, both the price and the charm of its rooms. It is not in the center but is closer to Horseshoe Bend.

Guide on where to stay in Page

WHERE TO STAY IN BRYCE

Bryce is one of the best places to camp in the Western US. In addition to two conventional campsites ( North Campground and Sunset Campground ), there are 12 backcountry campsites.

If camping is not your thing and you prefer to stay in one of the best hotels in the West, then I recommend the Best Western Ruby’s Inn , a historic hotel at the gates of the national park that also has a camping area.

WHERE TO STAY IN ZION

  • Bumbleberry Inn:  One of the few hotels near Zion whose price is below $200 a night and with a great value.
  • La Quinta Inn and Suites : Another hotel that also has good prices and is highly rated near Zion, known for its buffet breakfast that includes delicious homemade waffles.

WHERE TO STAY IN MONUMENT VALLEY

If you want to enjoy dawn with the best views of the valley, I recommend that you camp in the Monument Valley. The campground is called The View Campground and the only way to reserve it is by calling +1 435-727-5802.

This campsite belongs to  The View Hotel , a hotel run by the Navajo Indians with equally amazing views.

WHERE TO STAY IN SANTA BARBARA

  • Hotel Santa Barbara: One of the best hotels in Santa Barbara with a great location in the city center and very close to the beach. Includes Wi-Fi, breakfast and free parking.
  • The Eagle Inn:   On the beach of Santa Barbara and in a beautiful historic building. The price is a bit higher but it includes a jacuzzi in the room.

WHERE TO STAY IN YOSEMITE

We decided to camp at Camp 4 during our visit to Yosemite. Here, the hippy movement was born in the 60s and spread throughout the United States.

However, if you don’t want to camp, don’t worry. There are very good hotels in Yosemite. Some of the best are:

  • The Ahwahnee
  • Yosemite Valley Lodge
  • Curry Village

Guide on where to stay in Yosemite

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN DIEGO

  • Staypineapple at Hotel Z: One of the best hotels in downtown San Diego. Modern design and quite affordable. It offers free bicycles to its customers.
  • HI-San Diego Point Loma Hostel: Hostel with shared rooms, very good price and located next to the beach. Ideal if you visit San Diego with the intention of meeting other travelers.

WHERE TO STAY IN JOSHUA TREE

The best place to stay in Joshua Tree is in one of its campsites. There are 4 campsites throughout the national park that can be reserved, and another 4 first-come, first-served campground. All the information regarding the Joshua Tree campgrounds can be found on the National Parks Service website.

WHERE TO STAY IN DEATH VALLEY

  • The Inn at Death Valley: This Oasis in the middle of the desert is the most luxurious resort you’ll find here. Refresh between your palm garden and its spring water pool and relax in your spa area.
  • The Ranch at Death Valley: Run by the same company as The Inn at Death Valley, it is the familiar and informal complement of the previous one. If you want to relax in a unique environment but without too many pretensions, this accommodation is for you.
  • Panamint Springs Resort:  This resort offers both tourist resorts and lodging in tents. It’s close to the west entrance of the national park, from where you’ll have stunning views of the sand dunes.

Guide on where to stay in Death Valley

WHERE TO STAY IN MOJAVE DESERT

There are no motels inside Mojave National Preserve. The only way to stay is camping. There are two family campsites, Hole-in-the-Wall Campground and Mid Hills Campground. Both are first-come, first-served campgrounds.

There is also the possibility of doing backcountry camping. If you want more information, check the US National Parks Service website.

WHERE TO STAY IN ARCHES

There are no campsites or hotels within Arches National Park. The best thing to do is to stay somewhere close to the entrance:

  • Red Cliffs Lodge:  All rooms have views of the Colorado River. In addition, you have access to a private living room with a fridge and microwave. This accommodation is the best you’ll find if you visit Arches National Park from the west. Do not miss its western cinema museum.
  • Under Canvas Moab:  This accommodation is located east of Arches National Park and offers already pitched tents, some with private bathrooms. If you are not a fan of the camps, but you would like to try, this is your place. In addition to the bed linen, the hotel will lend you towels and a flashlight. A very comfortable way to learn a little about the American camper culture.

WHERE TO STAY IN SEQUOIA

  • Montecito Sequoia Lodge: This rustic mountain accommodation offers a place to relax, surrounded by lakes, forests and rugged peaks. It has a restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet.
  • Bearpaw High Sierra Camp: This established camp has 6 canvas tents with wooden floors. The views of the surroundings are amazing. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price of the accommodation.
  • Wuksachi Lodge:  It is the emblematic hotel of Sequoia, an amazing mountain hut made of stone and cedar located in the heart of the park, surrounded by a powerful sequoia forest and towering peaks of the sierra.

WHERE TO STAY IN HAVASU FALLS

As we commented, if you visit Havasu Falls, it is compulsory to spend at least one night in one of its campsites, since you cannot make excursions exclusively for one day. Book both the tour and the camping permit from the official website of the Havasupai Indian Reservation.

WHERE TO STAY IN YELLOWSTONE

There are only  9 hotels within Yellowstone National Park , so in peak tourist season, most travelers only find accommodation outside the park.

You can find the best options on our guide on where to stay in Yellowstone National Park, but my favorite hotels are:

  • Kelly Inn West Yellowstone
  • Yellowstone Gateway Inn
  • Stage Coach Inn
  • Al’s Westward Ho Motel
  • Travelodge by Wyndham
  • Absaroka Lodge

WHERE TO STAY IN GRAND TETON

There are many places to stay in Grand Teton National Park but my favorite ones are:

  • Colter Bay Village
  • Jackson Lake Lodge
  • Headwaters Lodge & Cabins at Flagg Ranch
  • Jenny Lake Lodge

To calculate  how much a road trip along the West Coast cost, keep in mind that gasoline in the United States is quite cheap compared most European countries, so even though you will drive many kilometers, this is not something you have to worry too much about when planning your itinerary.

Regarding the food , going to restaurants or going out to have a drink is very expensive; especially when you are looking for somewhere that serve healthy and quality food. If you’re willing to eat fast food, your West Cost travel budget will decrease since the United States is the paradise for junk food.

Regarding accommodation , while it is more expensive in the US than other countries, there are ways to make it cheaper .

Consider camping during your West Coast America tour. In addition to being cheaper, it is very fun and do not forget that there is no country in the world with such an active camping culture as in the United States. You will enjoy watching all the American accessories that make camping more comfortable, and the amazing motorhomes that are better than many houses. You can check some tips for traveling by rv in the USA here.

If you want to know how much we spent during out trip, you can check our West Coast travel budget for 10 days.

West Coast USA combinations ideas

In case you have more time, you can combine the West Coast of the USA with other destinations. Some of the most popular combinations are the following.

West Coast America and Hawaii holidays

If you love nature, combine  West Coast USA and Hawaii to enjoy the most active volcanoes in the United States. These wild islands in the middle of the Pacific, offer a native culture totally different from any other place in the world, in addition to beautiful beaches. The Western US and Hawaii landscapes are an excellent combination for the more adventurous.

RIVIERA MAYA and WEST COAST USA honeymoon

Riviera Maya and West Coast America honeymoon trips are very popular.  With this travel itinerary, we can enjoy a mix of the natural American West Coast landscapes with turquoise water beaches and the history of ancient civilizations. This is the best combination for honeymoons or for travelers interested in a mix of all-inclusive vacation packages.

WEST COAST AND ROUTE 66 road trip

If you want to travel the most famous road in the United States, plan a Route 66 – Western US road trip. With this tour, you will have a chance to visit my favorite city in the US: Chicago. I don’t recommend this combination if you do not like driving since much time of this trip will be spent inside the car.

West Coast USA tours from New york

Another very popular combination, especially if you are traveling from Europe. A New York & West Coast America fly-drive itinerary mixes the Western US National Parks with the busiest city of the East Coast. This option is perfect for those who also enjoy visiting big cities, since there are plenty of things to do in New York City.

New York view from brooklyn skyline pier night photography

With any of these combinations, I recommend spending at least 10 days in West Coast America .

However, if you only plan to travel to the West Coast and can afford it, I would recommend spending 2 or even  3 weeks.

Finally, it is very useful to plan your trip using a map of Western US , marked with your places of interest. Then check the following map to see if there is any other attraction on the way.

We are from Singapore and planning a 20 days trip in June to West Coast of US and would be our first drive trip to the US. We wanted to cover Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Yosemite, route 66, UTAH but not sure if we are able to (or worth to) cover up till Seattle. We love your advise as it will be our first trip to West Coast of US and accommodation recommendations will be helpful plus itinerary. regards Melvin

' src=

Hi Melvin, Wow, that sounds amazing! There is so much to see the western United States. I think you’ll find our road trip itineraries from Las Vegas to be super helpful. As for accommodation, it depends on whether you’re renting a car or RV since an RV will take care of accommodation for you. Otherwise, the hotel recommendations above in this article are a great place to start. 🙂

' src=

Hi! Wow, relieved i came accross this blog. Thank you for sharing this.

I made an almost similar itinerary and posted it in trip advisor.

we are arriving early morning in Vegas on March 10 and flying out late night from San Francisco March 20. For the 10 day trip, we’d like to see Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. Most of the comments says most of the time will be spent driving hence the trip might not be an enjoyable one. Some even suggested dropping Yosemite as this is too far from the rest of the places we’re hoping to see.

With all the driving you did on this trip, do you think you still spent a good time exploring the parks?

Thanks heaps!

Yes, it was a lot of hours driving but it was a trip of a lifetime. I won’t change any of the stops I did so I highly recommend it specially if you don’t mind driving at night and you don’t have more time to spend on the West Coast USA.

Hi, very informative post there ! May I know what route did u take to travel to yosemite from death valley ? I supposed you travelled when the tiogo road was closed ?

' src=

We traveled in August when the Tioga Road was open. So we just drove Nort through the Eastern Sierra and enter from the Northeastern part of the park 😉

' src=

i am planning to go to a trip with my friends but iam confused where should i go.

It’s difficult to choose when there are so many great options! My recommendation is to check the places and pictures and just pick the 4/5 places that you find more interesting 😉

Hi Martin from Australia here. I am busy planning an 8 day self drive tour in April starting in, and returning to Las Vegas. I stumbled on your website and found it to be a fantastic resource, full of very helpful information. One thing that is puzzling me with your route. Why did you go to Monument Valley first and then criss-cross south to Antelope Canyon, north to Bryce Canyon and then south again to the Grand Canyon. This appears to add an additional 400 miles (appx). I had originally been planning a circuit through Bryce Canyon, Monument Park, Antelope Canyon and Grand Canyon. Then Back to Las Vegas via Mojave Desert and Death Valley. Thank you

' src=

We did that itinerary because we were traveling in August (high season) and wanted to camp in Monument Valley and Grand Canyon, so we book the only days available hehehe

Your itinerary sounds great. Let me know how you do it finally.

' src=

Hi! I would love your help in planning my itinerary for my West Coast Roadtrip Honeymoon. We would love to check as many of the same locations off our list as you have in this post. Would love to get your thoughts on cost efficiency, glamping/camping vs. RV rentals and what we HAVE to see, and what we could skip. We definitely don’t want to spend the majority of our trip in the car. Thinking of flying into Vegas and then going from there. We would be going from June 12-20th. This is by far the most helpful article I have found online so far! Thanks for writing!

We will be happy to help. Let me know any questions you may have and we will help.

' src=

we are a couple, 60 years+ but able to drive and planning a trip next Sep. 2020. However we note that at some places you had to camp. I don’t think we are up to camping and wonder how to achieve the trip you made without camping.

You don’t need to camp if you don’t want to. There are many hotels where you can stay 🙂 Let me know your itinerary and I will give you some hotel ideas.

' src=

I wish more people would post valuable content like this. This is the first time I’ve been on your website, but after this, I doubt it will be the last time.

Thanks Robert!! You are always welcome 😉

Planning a trip in mid December. Is your 10 day trip feasible at this time of year ? Thanks.

Yes, it’s perfectly fine. Just bear in mind that you might find snow in some places like Bryce and Yosemite and the main roads to Yosemite from the east (Tioga road) is gonna be closed.

Hope you have a beautiful trip!

Have you ever thought of planning a trip of the Four Corners States of the Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado & Utah). There are so many sites that would be a tough decision. New Mexico has the Gila National Forest, City of Rocks in the southwest, Carlsbad Caverns to name just a few, Colorado, Arizona, Utah you could go on and on. This would also the sunrises and sunsets, rivers canyons. It is so vast that each state could provide what every photographer would want to see and shoot. Just think about it. if you more information, please contact me.

Sure! We still have a bunch of places we want to visit!

Thank you It was very useful

Thanks Isabel!

Great post, thanks for the info I’m considering doing this trip with my dad, how fit do you have to be to do this trip? He can’t really walk a whole lot at a time.

Hi Emiliano,

You don’t need to walk if you don’t want to. Just visit the main lookouts accessible by car.

Let me know if you have any other question.

' src=

Well, that was a pretty fascinating read, not going to lie. I really hope you continue to write. Probably one of the more informative pieces I’ve read on this subject. Thanks!

Hi, My family of 3 will be travelling to West of USA for about 12 to 14 days this coming September month 2019. Can you help us to plan the trip visiting all the interesting places and also advise us the cost.

We give a lot of piece of advice on our blog. Please read it and let us know if you have any question.

I am flying from Toronto, Canada and am unsure which airport to arrive and leave in. I am planning on visiting Zion, Bryce Canyon, Cathedral Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and Grand Canyon (South Rim). I am unsure whether to fly to Las Vegas and leave from Arizona, or vice versa, or do a loop. Any suggestions?

Amazing blog by the way!

Which airport in Arizona are you considering? Las Vegas in quite close to those places you want to visit and usually there is cheap flights to go there.

Let me know if you have any question

Thank you for your reply! I was thinking Phoenix airport. Just not sure the best route and will be renting a car!

Also, do you know if its possible to rent a car at one airport and return it to another?

Hi, i am traveling with 6 adults. Planning to arrive in New York, then fly to LA and hoping to have a glimpse of the city and its surrounding and fly to vancouver . We will fly back home from Vancouver.

How many days do you think is good for us? I am travelling with my parents aged 60yo.

Can you give me any recommendations

Hi Felicia,

I would say to book at least 10 – 15 days. As recommendations I would suggest hiring good travel insurance for the USA and check the different articles we have at the blog.

Let me know if you need something else,

Hello there,

We have about 8-9 days along the West Coast after a conference in Vegas. Looking at the following itinerary/places we want to visit. Do you think this is something workable/have any comments? Thanks so much!

Day 1: (From Vegas) Antelope Valley/Horseshoe Bend (Find somewhere to stay for the night – is there a recommendation where we can stay in that area?) Day 2: Grand Canyon Day 3: Travel back to Vegas, fly to San Francisco. Day 4: San Francisco Day 5: San Francisco -> Monterey, Big Sur (Find somewhere to stay?) Day 6: Travel to LA Day 7: LA Day 8: LA

Thanks very much for your message and for reading us!

Until day 4 your itinerary is gonna be very intense but definitely doable, as we made a very similar itinerary at the beginning of our trip. You can find recommendations for the night near horseshoe bend/Antelope Canyon in this section of our article.

As for the second part of your trip, We didn’t travel from SF towards the south so don’t know if that would be something possible.

Please let me know if we can help with any other questions.

Best regards,

Hi I am trying to plan a trip with my son for September 2019 have i left enough time to do this? And could you help us with an itinerary Also if we choose to camp do we purchase this in the USA as we are travelling from the UK Thanks

Hi Richard,

Thank you very much for your message.

You are still in time for planning the trip, so I ‘d definitely try to do it!

You can see different itineraries in our US articles depending on your days and preferences. Hope that helps.

As for the campings it depends on the campsite, some accept online reservations like the one in Monument Valley while others are filled in a first-come first-served basis like Camp 4 in Yosemite.

Please let us know if we can help with any other questions.

' src=

Hi everyone! Could you help me to make a itinerary with the time and 10 destinations?

We will need some more information to help you. When and where are you starting your trip, days, preferences and so on.

Hi guys, Love your work. I’m a photographer and looking to do a road trip through the west cost of the USA, covering as much of the national parks as possible (Yellowstone a must). We only have a 2 week gap during July to do this. Do you have any tours available for July 2019 for 2 super fun people?

' src=

Me, along with spouse and 13 year old son, are planning for a 10 day trip to LA, LV & SFO from India during June last week.

Request if you could help build us an itinerary for First Timers to US. It would be with a driver if we have to hire a car.

Do you deal in hotel accommodations too – 4 star?

Could you please let me know a rough expenditure on all this.

Kindly do mention your charges too for helping us out with a good itinerary and any help on ground that you could provide during our stay.

Thanking You, MOHAN

I have sent you an email with our service rates.

Have a nice day!

I am planing with my boyfriend our trip in June to California for 10 days. We are landing in LA and we would like to visit Yosemite, Death Valley, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and San Diego. Could you please give us some tips? We are afraid that Tioga Pass might not be opened at the beginning of June..

Thanks a lot!

Hi Anabel, I think you have enough time in 10 days to visit the cities and NP you mentioned. You can do 2 days for LA, 3 days for Yosemite, 1 day for Death Valley, 1 day for Las Vegas, 2 days for Grand Canyon and 1 day for San Diego.

As you said, Tioga Pass maybe is still close in June, so I recommend you booking a hotel around Fresno (in case Tigoa Road is close) and other around Mammonth Lakes (in case it is open). And cancel the one you are not going to use once you know the Tioga Road status?

Let me know if you need anything else.

' src=

Hello, Thanks for the detailed analysis of west coast. We are planning to visit west coast from Philadelphia and would like to cover California/LA/SFO/Las Vegas. We would however fly to Seattle from PHL and take our trip to west coast from Seattle.

Please provide us with an itinerary.

We are planning 10 days for this trip and would like to over not just national parks but also Golden gate bridge/Hollywood/Alcatraz etc. We don’t want to do the theme parks.

Sure, I have sent you an email with our planner services rates.

' src=

Hi, Thanks for itinerary! We are going on a trip from LA in September for 16 days, and this helped a lot! If you could give some tips on showering…it’s not available in a lot of camp sites. Also, if you have some experience with laundry service, I would appreciate some info. Thanks!

Hi Soma! Thanks for your message and words!

You can check beforehand which campsites offer shower utilities and plan according to your needs. We booked camping with showers in Grand Canyon and Yosemite, taking a shower at least every 2 days. As for laundry service, I would suggest doing the same. We went just for a week and didn’t really need to do any washing but if you are staying 16 days some campings have some sort of place for washing. As an example again, you can find those utilities in Grand Canyon and Yosemite, and I am sure there will be more in other important campgrounds.

Hope that helps and have a wonderful US West Coast trip!

' src=

Hi we are planning a 15 day stay flying into LA hiring a car can you recommened a route then we fly back out from LA.Thanks

The US West Coast is huge and there are endless possibilities doing a round trip from L.A.

Depending on your personal taste and the number of miles that you are willing to drive, there are many itineraries.

I recommend that you check all the main attractions explained throughout the article and once you know your preferences, you can design your own route.

Hope it helps and you make the most of your trip!

Sure, I have sent you an email more information about our trip planner services. I can also help you to plan your visits to NYC and Washington. I live in Philadelphia, that is 2hours from NYC and two hours from Washington, so I know these cities very well and I can help you too.

Hello Jaz, thank you for the useful information. I am planning for the west coast trip but could you confirm will it be too much to digest if I cover all/most of the destinations mentioned in your article above in just one trip?

Or shall I split the trip in multiple trips to enjoy and assimilate the delightful view which each destination has to offer?

That is up to you. How much time do you have? Where are you coming from? If I could, I would do it in one trip (3-4 months).

Let me know if you need something else, Ascen.

Hi Loved reading your information on USA! My husband and I want to travel the west coast in September this year. We have booked so far return flights from Sydney to San Francisco. We would like to see Yosemite Bryce Zion Death Valley Redlands Lake Tahoe Sequoia and Grand Canyon. Not interested in Los Angeles or Las Vegas. We thought we would return via The big Sur to San Francisco. Do you think we can do this in a month? What would be the best driving route to do all this. Can we also purchase driving maps? Any help you could give I would be most grateful! Thanking you

Hi Cath, I have sent you an email regarding our travel planning services.

Hi, thanks a lot for your details itinerary which is very much appreciated. I’m planning my self-drive trip to west coast USA for about 12 days, in May 2019. Just wondering any tips on what to wear? Will it be cold in the Yosemite national park? I’m planning for Grand Canyon, Upper Antelope Canyon + Horseshoes band, Yosemite, is it still worth to get the annnual pass? There are total 6 of us.

Hi Joey, If you are only visiting two national parks (Yosemite and Grand Canyon ) it is not worth getting the annual pass. Pay just for the standard fee in each of them. Horseshoe Bend is free and Antelope Canyon is private, so you will have to pay the Navajo fee.

In 12 days you have enough time to visit Death Valley, Bryce and Zion too.

Regarding what to carry in the backpack, please check the camping and cold weather section of this post.

P.S: Next sunday we will be posting our Guide to Yosemite and I am sure you are going to find it interested!!

Best, Ascen

11 Awesome West Coast National Park Trips

Catherine Parker

Want to hit the top US National Parks in 2023? Head to the west coast. That’s where you’ll find towering redwoods, mighty waterfalls and dramatic vistas. Here’s what you need to know before you go, including info about how to avoid crowds and where to stay. Also included are the latest updates about Yosemite’s reservation system for entry.

For what seems my kids’ entire childhood, I’ve traveled to the west coast national parks for summer road trips . We’ve enjoyed the hiking trails, explored the ecosystems and seen some epic vistas. The west coast national parks are some of the best in North America. Here’s a list of the top US National Parks for your bucket list.

Top National Parks in California

1. yosemite national park.

If you haven’t been to Yosemite National Park in California, it’s an  icon worthy of a park pilgrimage .

Reservations were required to enter Yosemite during recent summers due to infrastructure repairs and crowding concerns. However, reservations will NOT be required for 2023. The exception? If you’re planning to try to catch the unique orange glow of Horsetail Falls that happens in February, you’ll need a reservation. Find the info here .

Start at Yosemite Valley and see El Capitan, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and several other waterfalls. Check into or tour the former Ahwahnee Hotel, now the Majestic Yosemite Hotel.

Then explore the Mariposa Grove for Sequoia trees at the southern end of the park. See the former Wawona Hotel, now the Big Trees Lodge, for a refined historic inn.

Head up to Tuolumne Meadows for a subalpine meadow among mountain peaks. And the Tuolumne River snakes through it for a picturesque picnic spot. This is one of the top National Parks in the USA and one of the busiest.

2. Death Valley National Park

Death Valley is a land of extremes. As the largest national park outside of Alaska, it encompasses over three million acres. And it’s the lowest point in North America at 282-feet below sea level. Another record is the highest air temperature ever recorded at the Furnace Creek Resort in 1913 (134 F/56.7 C).

You might not expect this but Death Valley has a luxurious side. The Oasis at Death Valley offers an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a horse corral, a couple of spring-fed swimming pools, a playground and several restaurants.

During your visit, see bad water basin and the Mesquite Flats sand dunes. It’s an easy day trip out of Las Vegas .

3. Joshua Tree National Park

Just outside Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park offers families a glimpse into two different desert ecosystems. Best explored during the school year, families can hike in a national park larger than the state of Rhode Island looking for the Joshua tree. Also see unique rock formations and it’s a popular park for backcountry 4×4 driving.

4. Redwoods National and State Parks

Some visitors might call it Redwoods National Park but it’s actually a national park and state park combined. See the coastal redwoods along with elk in a national park north of San Francisco.

5. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Sequoia and Kings Canyon  National Parks are connected. Both offer hikes among giant sequoia trees so tall staring at the top will cause vertigo. Actually, they are some of the largest trees on earth. During your visit, see the General Sherman Tree.

Or if the kids are up for it, take a horseback ride from the stables and explore the Sierra Nevada mountains on horseback. Find rustic cabins for a camping trip not easily forgotten too.

6. Lassen Volcanic National Park

Learn about volcanoes while exploring a northern California national park that looks similar to Yosemite but lacks the crowds. Take the scenic drive through Lassen Volcanic National Park and see Lassen Peak, one of the largest plug volcanoes in the world. Then see mudpots, fumeroles, steam vents and sulphur springs.

Stay in a rustic cabin with bunk beds or escape to the Drakesbad Guest Ranch for western hospitality, both within the park.

US National Parks in Oregon and Washington

7. crater lake national park.

See the deepest lake in the U.S. while driving along Crater Lake National Park ‘s Rim Drive, located in southern Oregon. Take a boat to hike to the top of Wizard Island in Crater Lake.

Or leap into the ice cold lake water. Learn how volcanic activity created Crater Lake.

End the perfect day watching the sunset from one of Crater Lake Lodge’s rocking chairs.   Then spend the night at the cabins at Mazama Village.

8. Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

Mount St. Helens was once a recreational playground for Washington, similar to Mt. Rainier National Park. Then one quiet Sunday morning in 1980 the snowcapped mountain vaporized and a mudslide decimated a forest for a generation. It’s included in this list, although it’s not a national park but is maintained by the US Forest Service.

The Johnston Ridge Observatory is a must for school-age kids with live seismographs and geologic exhibits. The visitor center offers two films that had my school-age kids glued to their seats as they watched.

9. Mount Rainier National Park

On a clear day, Mount Rainier offers Seattle’s best view. This popular getaway offers crisp, pine-scented air along with the National Park Inn or Paradise Inn, an historic lodge half-way to its peak in Mount Rainier National Park.

Hike through blazing wildflower meadows offering months of blooms. Of course, a trip to Mount Rainier is not complete without sampling its namesake cherries. Please sure to arrive early in the day during the summer.

10. North Cascades National Park

North Cascades National Park , east of Seattle, offers 300 glaciers in a rugged park that’s quiet even in the summer. The west side of the park offers a temperate rain forest. And the east side of the park offers a dry ponderosa pine forest.

Find floating cabins at the Ross Lake Resort along the Skagit River. And they’re only accessible by float plane, ferry or horseback. Or visit Stehekin at the headwaters of Lake Chelan for another hamlet without a road.

11. Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is a triple threat park. Find mountains to hike, rainforests to explore and beaches to walk. In fact, Olympic National Park is so rich in diversity its also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Drive up to Hurricane Ridge to see its glaciers. Explore an alpine ridge and hike through a meadow of flowers.

Hike along a temperate rainforest trail then have lunch at a woodland lodge along a glassy lake. Afterwards teach the kids to skip the perfect rock along the shores of Lake Quinault.

Spend the afternoon exploring the rugged coastline where tide pools outnumber people. Kids can earn a nifty patch for their marine adventures and Mom can let the soothing sounds of the ocean work its magic.

Also find a mineral pool that offers families a warm place to swim since the lakes are chilly. Or grab a stand-up paddle board and explore from the water.

Other Top Parks in the West

Grand canyon national park.

As one of the best national parks, the Grand Canyon in Arizona offers lots of activities for visitors in Arizona.

Head to the Visitor Center, then walk to the Rim Trail and Mather Point and look down the layers of the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River below. If time allows, attend a ranger program or tour the Historic Village, all located on the South Rim.

Grand Canyon National Park offers amazing sunsets and sunrises. For the best spot to witness this symphony of nature, stop at Yaki or Mather Point. I’ve seen visitors moved to tears at the beauty of this experience. For the adventurous, a rafting trip can be arranged.

Zion National Park

To appreciate this popular park in southern Utah explore the Zion Canyon , accessible via a shuttle bus. Some of its best hikes include The Narrows and Angels Landing, both best suited for other teens and adults.

Bryce Canyon National Park

See the hoodoos as hikers take the trail down to Bryce Canyon ‘s Amphitheather. This park is an easy park to see in a few hours while in Utah and offers a shuttle service.

Arches National Park

Located near outdoors destination Moab, Arches National Park attracts a crowd in the summer. Top sites include Delicate Arch, on the Utah license plate, and Landscape Arch.

Rocky Mountain National Park

See the fourteeners, or mountains over 14,000 feet, in this popular national park in Colorado. Known for its scenic byway, the Trail Ridge Road, see animals and wildflowers in equal doses.

Glacier National Park

Known as the jewel of the continent, Glacier National Park sits along the border of Canada and Montana. It is known for some of the last glaciers in the lower 48. Driving the Going-to-the-Sun road is a top thing to do.

Yellowstone National Park

The home to geysers, like Old Faithful, and lots of wildlife in Wyoming. Yellowstone was the first park in the park system and a bucket list destination.

4 Epic East Coast Family Vacations And What To Do There

W est Coasters tired of the same old palm tree-dotted sandy beaches and amusement park rides can find a change of scenery on the other side of the country. No need to spend thousands on international flights. The East Coast boasts 23,000 miles of changing terrain, regions, and cultures, from the rugged coast of Maine to the blue beaches of Key West. These are our family’s favorite spots for our East Coast family vacations.

NO TIME TO ENJOY THIS ARTICLE NOW? PIN IT OR BOOKMARK FOR LATER!

Bar Harbor , Maine, can serve as your home base for a trip to this region of the East Coast with neighboring Acadia National Park.  With loads of activities for family travelers, the town serves as a launchpad for adventures on land and sea.  Don’t pass up the opportunity to explore this hotspot that is still holding onto the charm New England’s small towns are known for.

Bar Island

Sitting just off the downtown area is Bar Island .  The island is connected to the mainland by a tidal bar and gently rises to offer sweeping views of the many islands that dot the harbor.  The walk is just two miles and takes less than one hour on average. Leave lots of time for the kiddies to explore the nooks and crannies in search of critters as the route takes you through a tidal zone.  The bar is only above water during low tide, so make sure to keep an eye on the local tide charts and plan accordingly to leave yourself plenty of time to get back across.

Great Touring Experience

Guided tours are always a hit.  Whether the tour guide is recycling his worn-out jokes, or is an actual expert in his field, a tour can be just what it takes to bring a destination to life.  Bar Harbor Kids is a tour agency that specializes in getting kids engaged with the outdoors.  They offer multiple options for different age groups, with both private and public tours throughout the week.  A stop here early in your stay is a great way to teach the young ones just what to look for as they explore.  Their ‘Mythical Maine’ tours are suggested for ages 4-7 and allow kids to learn about pirates, sea monsters, and Vikings that have visited these shores while also following a map in search of their very own buried treasure!

Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company

Families looking to get up close and personal with the celebrities of the ocean can avoid the paparazzi by cruising with the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company .  The Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company offers tours throughout the week that showcase the large aquatic mammals drawn to the region.

Other than whale tours, they also offer trips that showcase local lighthouses and even a trip out to Petit Manan Island for any birders looking to check the Atlantic Puffin off their life checklist.  What really makes these guys stand out, though, is the five-hour, ranger-led cruise out to Baker Island .  The trip out to the Island is led by a naturalist from the National Park Service aboard the authentic Maine lobster boat ‘Miss Samantha.’  Pack a lunch. After being ferried to the island by their specially designed landing craft, guests will have time to eat it before being led on a 1.5-mile hike that highlights the natural features and history of the island.  All ages are welcome, but there is limited space on the boat for strollers, so consider bringing a child carrier for this trip.

Dont Miss An Unforgettable Romantic Weekend Getaway in Key West, FL

Acadia National Park

By the time the National Park Service was born in 1916, most of the land east of the Mississippi River was already claimed and unavailable to be protected by the title of National Park.  Today, looking at a map of our National Parks, there stands a crown jewel, isolated from its nearest park by hundreds of miles.  Acadia National Park exists because private landowners recognized the importance of protecting the natural beauty of the land.  Today, millions of people make the trek to this remote park to soak in its rugged grandeur.

Where land meets sea, Maines rugged coast. © NPS

Cadillac Mountain

As the sun crosses the Atlantic each morning, it could choose to appear anywhere, and for several months a year, it chooses Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.  Who can blame it? Coastal Maine provides a rugged backdrop to the Atlantic Ocean that can be found nowhere else on American soil. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point along the Eastern Seaboard at an imposing 1,527’.  Because of this, for several months of the year, it is the first location in the United States to see the sun each morning.

The road leading up to the summit puts this among the best places for families with young kids who may not be ready to trek up the mountains on foot but are in search of a quintessential New England forest view.  There are pull-offs along the road on the way up, but the real prize is the panoramic view from the top.  The summit view opens 360-degree sweeping views.  Take a moment to point out the long lakes and rounded mountain summits, evidence left behind by the glaciers that shaped the land while retreating almost 20,000 years ago.

Carriage Roads

Before donating thousands of acres to the National Park Service, John D. Rockefeller spent $3.8 Million dollars improving the land for its usage, including building 57 Miles of carriage roads.  These crushed gravel paths crisscross the park, conveniently connecting the many features, often using ornate stone bridges to cross the heavily glaciated land.  The stroller-friendly trails are an excellent way for parents to stretch their legs and offer up some solitude from the scenic vistas.  Wildwood Stables even offers horse-drawn carriage tours of varying lengths for families looking to cover a little extra ground.

Where to stay in Bar Harbor

The Mt Desert Inn is conveniently located in Bar Harbor.  Making it a great base for exploring the Island. They offer Double Queen rooms with their own private balcony or terrace access.  Their private garden can serve as a saving grace for frazzled parents looking for a little slice of serenity at the end of a long day.  Parking can be a challenge in the rapidly expanding village. A stay here will leave you with a brief walk to the harbor area, where most of the dining and activities are located in town.

Newport, Rhode Island

Summer home of the Astors and the Vanderbilts, birthplace of religious freedom in the United States, and possibly even the next great destination for your family vacation.  Surely, all those billionaires that built elaborate mansions (Cottages?) on the shores of Newport couldn’t have been wrong.  There are loads of reasons to visit the island. It’s a short jaunt for a day trip to Block Island, a road trip to Cape Cod, or hit the waves and try your hand in the area’s vibrant water sports community.

Easton’s Beach

If Rhode Island is the Ocean State, then Newport is the Ocean City. You can’t visit without spending some time at one of their famous beaches.  Travelers familiar with West Coast beaches always comment on the rugged terrain that seems to protect our sandy shores.  Southern California has endless beaches that stretch and wrap the horizon, while in Newport, they appear to be placed in nooks chiseled from the neighboring granite cliffs as though by design.  At first, their small size would appear a disadvantage. But, when the winds lull and you feel the power of the ocean in your chest as it hammers the distant rocks and echoes off the walls, you will understand.

Easton’s Beach, sometimes known simply as 1st Beach, has something for everyone.  The western portion of the inlet is primarily used by surfers, who enjoy some of the finest breaks in Rhode Island year-round.  There is hardly a day that passes where there are not a few adrenaline junkies that paddle out, often trudging through snow-covered sand to reach the water’s edge!  Further East, where the sunbathers and swimmers gather, is a large building housing showers, a snack bar, and a carousel.  What kid wouldn’t love a ride on a carousel with an ocean view?

Sun, sandy and salty air at Easton’s Beach © Tom Rhodes

Save The Bay Aquarium

Right from Easton Beach, families can access the Save The Bay Exploration Center and Aquarium .  Here for a small donation, see all manner of rescued wildlife from the waters off our coast.  One of the best things about this location (aside from its convenient access) is its touch tanks.  Kids of all ages will love being able to hold countless creatures as the naturalist volunteers excitedly speak about the animals.  This spot can be very popular in the summer months during peak beach hours and is best visited either early or late in the day to avoid crowds.

You’ve watched surfers hang loose, rode an oceanfront carousel, and pet a shark.  What more could Easton’s Beach have to offer?  How about a walk along the cliffs for which Newport is so famous?  Newport’s Cliff Walk follows the coastline for 3.5  mostly smooth miles.  Those that walk the full path will be treated with world-class views of Easton’s Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on one side and, quite literally, billions of dollars in real estate on the other.

Breakers Mansion

Stepping inside The Breakers mansion feels like a journey back in time to the Gilded Age. Built by the Vanderbilt family in the late 19th century, this magnificent summer ‘Cottage’ boasts 70 rooms filled with ornate details, elaborate carvings, and stunning artwork. From the grand marble staircase to the breathtaking ocean views, every corner of The Breakers exudes equal parts luxury and excess. As you walk through the rooms, it’s easy to imagine the lavish parties and gatherings that took place within these walls. A visit to The Breakers is a glimpse into a bygone era of American history, a testament to the incredible wealth and ambition of the period.

The Preservation Society of Newport County offers various tour options.  The group tours can be a great way to have any questions answered while being immersed in the history of the home.  For families with young children who may be distracting to other guests, or those who simply want to go at their own pace, there are self-guided options as well.  Parents on the fence should know the self-guided tour will never disappoint, and it can be nice to drift around the grounds and explore all the details that have made The Breakers so prominent at your family’s pace.

Where to stay in Newport

After a while in Newport, you might actually begin to loathe the word luxury.  It seems to ooze up out of the cobblestone streets and follow along while you make your way through the shops. But maybe that is part of the fun? The Vanderbilt Hotel offers a luxurious (sorry) stay for families who want a small sample of what life in The Breakers may have been like. The hotel’s prime location on historic Thames Street puts travelers within walking distance of the town’s shops, restaurants, and museums. The spacious rooms and suites offer plenty of space for families to relax and unwind after a day of sightseeing, and the hotel’s amenities, which include an indoor pool and fitness center, provide plenty of entertainment options. Great news for pet parents the hotel’s pet-friendly policy means that furry family members can join in on the fun too! With its elegant decor, excellent service, and convenient location, The Vanderbilt Hotel is the perfect place to use as a home base for a family trip to Newport.

Chesapeake Bay

Get ready to soak up the sun, sea breeze, and quality time on a family trip to the charming Chesapeake Bay ! for everyone.  Travelers can hike through scenic trails, kayak on calm waters or discover historical sites while indulging in local cuisine.   The Chesapeake Bay area offers a unique combination of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural diversity, making it an excellent location for a family vacation to the east coast.

Chesapeake Pirates

Driving through Baltimore now, it can be hard to imagine the majestic sailing ships of the past gliding through the harbor.  Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Chesapeake Bay was a hotbed of activity, with ships from all over the globe bringing in cargo.  Of course, at the time, if there was cargo to be had, there were pirates there to take it.  These waters were no exception.  The pirates that ravaged the Atlantic and Caribbean often took advantage of the shallow waters of the bay to avoid capture, and their stories have been passed down through the generations.

Today, the pirates are gone, but the water is just as beautiful as ever.  It can be a challenge to take in a sightseeing cruise with little ones who just want to play; however, one local company has come up with an ingenious solution.  At Chesapeake Pirates Adventure , parents can sit back and soak up the scenery while kids get the opportunity to live out their swashbuckling fantasies.  Located in the port city of Annapolis, Maryland, climb aboard the pirate ship ‘Sea Gypsy,’ don a costume, and watch the kids undertake a daring adventure.

The adventure is scheduled to last for just over one hour, and tickets are available for pre-purchase online.  They suggest showing up 30 minutes early to allow time for the face painting and dress-up.  In this fast-paced, modern world, even pirates are expected to be punctual; else, they’re likely to walk the plank.

Looking for some East Coast Family Vacation Ideas? Don’t dare book those tickets without stopping here for inspiration and inside tips!

Air Mobility Command

History buffs, aviation enthusiasts, or fun day trippers will love the Air Mobility Command Museum . Located on the grounds of Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, the museum is home to an impressive collection of aircraft, artifacts, and exhibits that tell the story of military air transportation.  With over 30 planes ranging from sleek fighter jets to massive cargo carriers, there’s something for everyone to ooh over. So fasten your seat belts, stow your tray tables, and prepare to take off.

Located on Dover Air Force Base, the museum has free parking and admission Wednesday through Saturday year-round.  For an extra special treat, visit on an ‘open cockpit day’ – the 3rd Saturday from April to  October – where the planes are left open for visitors to get an even better look.  They even have some of the crew that served aboard the plane standing by to share their experiences and help explain what makes each one special.

The museum also gives access to a high-tech flight simulator to anyone over the age of 10.  After seeing all these planes up close, everyone will enjoy the opportunity to attempt a landing on their own.

Port Discovery

Port Discovery in Baltimore is an adventure that’s both educational and entertaining. This children’s museum is packed with interactive exhibits and hands-on activities that will spark curiosity in visitors of all ages. From exploring a three-story urban treehouse to learning about the science of bubbles, Port Discovery is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to have some serious fun while also learning a thing or two.

Sky Climber

Climbing up through the center of the museum, the Skyclimber play area is several levels of obstacles and climbing for kids 5-10 years old.  As a reward for making the trek from the base to the top, kids can take a trip back down the twisting slide.  Socks are required, but if families forget to pack a pair, they sell them in the gift shop.

Assateague National Seashore

Every trip should have a stop that offers an opportunity to relax and soak up the raw beauty of the location.  There are few spots on the Atlantic coast offering a more secluded beach experience than the barrier islands of Maryland.  The most famous of which is Assateague, home of the Assateague National Seashore .  From the meticulously etched Islands of Maine to the haphazardly placed sands of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, the East Coast is bejeweled with thousands of islands.  Like distant cousins, related by blood but separated by culture, tradition, and unique landscape.  Each is worthy of praise, so what makes a trip out to Assateague worthy of your itinerary?

Hundreds of years ago, for reasons which nobody can agree upon, a herd of horses was set to range on the seagrasses.  Left to their own devices, these animals lasted many generations, surviving storms and drought until the island was adopted by the National Park Service in 1965.  Today, the herd has grown to several times that number and is controlled to maintain a healthy ecosystem, with proceeds from the sale of foals going to fund the local volunteer fire department.   The horses can be seen throughout the island but often congregate in and around the marshes as the tide drops.  Remember, these animals are wild and may not behave like their domesticated cousins.  As with all wildlife, give them the distance to maintain safety for both your family and the horses.

Penning Day

An extra special experience each year can be had leading up to ‘penning day.’  Each July, saltwater cowboys herd the horses on the Island together.  Over the course of several days, they corral them together for health checks and population count.  Finally, they make a swim across the channel where bidders can attempt to purchase one of the foals at auction.  There are always loads of activities during the week, with rides, cultural presentations, and of course, the always popular annual Fireman’s Carnival .

Where To Stay In Chesapeake Bay

The only thing better than falling asleep to the smell of the ocean is waking up to it.  At the Harbour Inn Marina & Spa you can do both and still be just a short drive from all the action.  This family-owned Inn has been providing travelers with a place to kick back for generations.  Their on-site restaurant, Harrison’s Harbour Lights , has served locally inspired meals on their open-air deck for over 100 years. For the hunters in your family, they offer a guided duck hunting trip to a private 500-acre preserve, complete with guides and transportation, for a reasonable fee.  If you’d prefer something a little more relaxing, make sure to book a massage in the spa to help loosen up after a long weekend exploring the scenic town of St. Michael.

The beauty of the North Atlantic beaches is often found in their ruggedness. On our family travels, we’ve made our way south along the east coast, sailed over New York City, and headed right on past Virginia Beach until we were welcomed by swaying palm trees, waving hello as they beckoned us to their warm sand. This tropical paradise is more than just a destination. It’s a state of mind. From sipping on fruity cocktails to watching chickens cross the road, Key West covers all the travel bases. So grab your sunscreen and your favorite Hawaiian shirt and head out on the most scenic of highways to Key West, where families can snorkel with sea turtles, explore a coastal fortress, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the elusive Hemingway cat.

Overseas Highway

The Overseas Highway in Florida is a breathtakingly scenic drive that spans 113 miles, connecting the mainland to the Florida Keys. Traveling on this highway is an unforgettable experience that offers stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, you’ll cross over 42 bridges, including the famous Seven Mile Bridge , and pass through charming towns and villages that are full of history and culture. You can stop to admire the art galleries and boutiques or indulge in delicious seafood at one of the many restaurants that span the route.

There are stops along the roughly 3-hour journey for bathroom breaks.  Several small villages along the way also offer a great opportunity to stretch the legs and explore before getting back on the road and heading further into the keys.

Florida Keys Eco-Discovery

The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and conservation enthusiasts. Located in Key West, the center features interactive exhibits that showcase the unique ecosystems and wildlife of the Florida Keys. From the mangrove forests to the coral reefs, visitors can learn about the diverse habitats and species that call this region home. The exhibits are engaging and informative, with hands-on activities and displays that appeal to all ages.

The center also offers educational programs and guided tours that provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation and the impact of human activity on the environment. Whether you’re interested in marine life, bird watching, or environmental science, the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is a great place to learn and explore.

Mallory Square

Mallory Square is best known for its stunning sunset views and lively street performers. Every evening, locals and tourists gather at the square to witness the breathtaking sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. As the sun descends below the horizon, the sky slowly transitions through an array of vibrant colors. Visitors can enjoy the sunset from the square’s pier or aboard a sunset cruise while indulging in refreshing drinks and delicious snacks from the local vendors.  The experience is so great that they repeat it every day with the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration .

Mallory Square is also famous for its entertaining street performers. From fire jugglers to acrobats, the performers showcase their unique talents and keep the crowds entertained with their energetic performances. The nightly Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square is not just a mere tourist attraction but a vibrant gathering of locals and visitors alike, creating a festive atmosphere of music, art, and culture.  Weekends can turn chaotic and start to take on the feel of an amusement park, so if you’re looking for some peace, target a weeknight.

Southernmost Point Marker

We drove down the Overseas Highway to reach Key West and eventually stopped because….well, we ran out of land.  Luckily for us, it was gorgeous, and everywhere we looked was a tropical paradise.  Of course, no trip is complete without an epic family photo.  A Grand Canyon backdrop from the family trip to Arizona, Mt. Rushmore looming over the kids in South Dakota, and of course, the Southernmost Point Marker in Key West.

The name may be lacking in originality. It may lack the grandeur of the Grand Canyon and the engineering marvel of Mt Rushmore.  Heck, it is not even the Southernmost Point in the continental U.S., nor is it 90 miles from Cuba.  Come to think of it; there really isn’t much that makes this landmark stand out other than the fact that it is just a really cool place to take a great picture to help your family remember how much they loved Key West.

Fort Jefferson

The road may have ended at the shore, but that doesn’t mean the adventure has to.  Fort Jefferson is located on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas and is a must-visit destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike.  The fort was built in the mid-19th century for use as a military base following the Civil War.  The fort’s architecture is impressive, with massive brick walls and a moat surrounding it. Walking around the fort and exploring the different levels and rooms gives visitors a sense of the challenges faced by the soldiers stationed there.

In addition to its historical significance, Fort Jefferson is located in one of the most beautiful and remote parts of the United States. The Dry Tortugas National Park , of which the fort is a part, is made up of seven small islands surrounded by crystal-clear water, coral reefs, and a diverse array of marine life.  Camping is available on the island, but most families will find the ferry service the most convenient option.  With packages that include a guided tour, beach access, lunch, and snorkeling equipment, the Yankee Freedom Ferry is a one-stop shop for a once-in-a-lifetime family adventure.

Where To Stay In Key West

Havana Cabana a fun name to say and a great place to stay.  From the moment you arrive, it is evident the resort has dived headfirst into the Cuban theme, with tastefully done decor that will whisk you away to scenic Havana.  Guests can relax and unwind while enjoying the views of the gardens or pools, or indulge in the hotel’s signature cocktail, the Hemingway daiquiri, at the on-site bar.  There are activities such as Giant Jenga, Cornhole, and Foosball scattered around the properties.

The on-site gardens provide ample opportunity for solitude while enjoying the largest pool in Key West.  Don’t forget to mark the important things on your calendar, like the poolside popsicles at noon or the slushies they’ll be serving up two hours later.  Transportation to and from the airport is included in your stay.  Mopeds and bicycles are available on-site for an additional fee, but they do have an hourly shuttle that runs until well after sunset year-round, so there is no excuse not to treat the family to one of their famed sunsets.

San Francisco & Yosemite Express 3D/2N (From Los Angeles)

The tour was good, my personal preference would have been to spend more time in San Francisco, doing the iconic things like a trolley car ride and an Alcatraz tour, rather than the random stops along the way. Our tour guide was great - however, right at the end of the tour - when I reached my destination - it was not the hotel that I was informed it was going to be, and both the tour guide and the driver couldn't get out of there quick enough, so I felt stranded...luckily I had been following where we were headed on my phone's GPS, otherwise I would have been totally unprepared. That was quite disappointing...I was going to tip them both - but they literally disappeared so quickly I barely got a chance to even say goodbye. I was also disappointed, as the literature all said Yosemite park, but we didn't get there because it was winter...fair enough - but I wasn't the only one who didn't understand we weren't going there..and we felt a little deceived...my tour itinerary still said Yosemite park on it, so that is where I thought we were going....

It was great. Tough schedule but I liked it.
The San Francisco/Yosemite tour was awesome. It exceeded my expectations. Our guide Dorit was really good and the itinerary was balanced covering all major spots with decent breaks in between. In 2019, Tasmanian teachers Andrew and Nicola set off on a year-long bike tour of Australia

The catch? They were on tandems, with their five and three-year-old in tow - certainly not the typical life for a young family.

But in their own words, it was worth every tantrum, crash, dropped lolly, and bloody knee - so they're back at it again on a much bigger scale:

A three year world tour, with their (now) three kids - 10, 8, and 18 months.

Throughout the journey they're popping into classrooms, and inviting the students to follow them on their travels .

Having kicked off in Aotearoa, they're currently on the West Coast.
