Five Things to Know About Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

Star Tours was Disney’s first modern simulator ride, and based on the Star Wars saga it was (as Yoda would say). Thanks to over 700 possible scene combinations in the high-def 3-D film at the heart of the attraction, you could ride all day and not have the same experience twice! Read on to learn more – or if you’d rather zip through hyperspace to the nuts and bolts, here’s your shortcut .

1. You enter the spaceport under an AT-AT.

Your Star Tours adventure begins outdoors, where the surroundings have been designed to resemble an Ewok Village (as seen in Return of the Jedi). You get to pass under a full-size AT-AT walker to get to the entrance of the ride’s building, which in and of itself is pretty cool.

Once indoors, you’ll find yourself in a spaceport where C-3PO and R2-D2 are working on your ride vehicle, the Starspeeder 1000. These life-size audio animatronics look and move exactly like their cinematic counterparts. The queue captures the familiar feeling of a train station or airport of today, but as it might exist in a galaxy far, far, away. It’s complete with a flight status board, weather reports, even a luggage scanner.

star tour tui

Just before you board, you’ll watch on overhead screens as C-3PO gets trapped in the Starspeeder cockpit while doing maintenance. After you enter the simulator and don your 3D glasses, the doors shut on C-3PO’s complaints about accidentally becoming the pilot, and your Starspeeder takes off.

2. You won’t know who you’ll see or where you’ll go.

The ride’s plotline comprises five general segments: an escape scene, a destination, a mission, another destination, and a concluding scene. Disney has multiple film clips from all nine episodes of the Star Wars saga that can be used for each segment of your journey, which creates a different experience each time you ride. So basically, you won’t know where you’ll go or which Star Wars characters you will see!

star tour tui

There are some limitations on how the scenes can be mixed, for instance, characters and scenes from Episodes 7-9 are not mixed with those from earlier movies. Still, it’s been noted by Star Wars purists that the randomized scenes can create a confusing timeline. Probably because of this, the ride experiences are not considered canonical in the Star Wars universe. But that doesn’t make them any less fun!

3. You may be the Rebel Spy!

In the escape scene at the opening, a villain (maybe Vader, maybe Kylo Ren, or ???) is searching for a Rebel Spy. A picture of an actual guest riding with you is shown onscreen and they are identified as being the spy. They’re chosen randomly or by a Cast Member and it can add a bit of fun if it’s someone in your own group – maybe even you!

Once you’ve made your escape, you may find yourself attacking AT-ATs, joining a pod race, being pursued by Tie Fighters, or more. The simulator is modeled after those used for training pilots and astronauts, so you’ll experience real dips, turns, twists, and climbs. It can be a little rough, but all the bouncing around helps to create a pretty realistic experience.

Star Tours - The Adventures Continue

You’ll make it back into hyperspace and the action will pause for a moment. You can catch your breath, and receive your mission from a Star Wars character who appears as a hologram. Sometimes the mission is just to deliver the Rebel Spy to safety, but there are other plotlines . Then you’ll take off and visit another planet for some more action.

Your adventure ends after a jump to hyperspace and a landing on Batuu, or possibly Spaceport THX1138 (the number is a nod to George Lucas’ first film), or one of a few other conclusion scenes. The entire attraction lasts about 7 minutes, the ride portion is about four and a half minutes. You’ll exit through the space terminal and into the Tatooine Traders gift shop, designed to suggest a desert outpost in Mos Espa.

4. It was different, a long time ago…

The first Star Tours attraction opened in 1987 at Disneyland, four years after the release of Return of the Jedi. Disney World’s version came two years later, in 1989. Since there was no Galaxy’s Edge at that time, it was placed in the Echo Lake area of Hollywood Studios.

This original version only had three movies (Episodes 4 through 6) to work with, and the premise was clear and simple. Star Tours was a transportation agency offering trips to Endor. However, according to the droid pilot R-3X (“Rex”), it was his first day on the job and he wasn’t used to his programming. As a result of his mistakes, guests never made it to Endor. But their ride did include crashing through comets, jumping to light speed, and the classic trench run on the Death Star.

star tour tui

Star Tours closed in 2010 for updates, and reopened as Star Tours: The Adventures Continue in 2011. Rex was retired from this version, but later became a DJ. You can see him today at Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Fun fact: R-3X was voiced by the late Paul Reubens.

Today’s version offers 3D film and randomized scenes, and Disney updates the adventures with newer characters. A Jakku scene was added in 2015 for The Force Awakens, Crait was added in 2017 for The Last Jedi, and the planet Kef Bir was added in 2019, after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. As Disney continues to add new scenes, the number of possible adventures changes over time.

5. The Nuts and Bolts.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue is located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Echo Lake between the Backlot Express and Grand Avenue. Since the attraction is indoors, it is not affected by weather, although part of the (covered) queue is outdoors.

You’ll be seated in rows in the Starspeeder 1000 simulator. Each of the five rows has 8 padded seats with a fabric lap belt and a shared armrest. A net bag below each seat holds your stuff.

star tour tui

Guests must transfer to a wheelchair and then to the ride vehicle. Disney advises that you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.

Guests must be at least 40″ tall to ride, and as with all attractions that have a height limit, Rider Switch is available .  It’s worth noting that flashing lights, the use of weapons, loud sounds, and the appearance of aliens or intimidating figures may frighten or disturb some guests, especially the younger set. Service animals are not allowed. Video Captioning and Handheld Captioning are available.

Wait times for Star Tours are very low in the first two hours the park is open. It’s also a good choice between noon and 4 p.m. Alternatively, you can secure Lightning Lane entry via Genie+. Star Tours: the Adventures Continue is also open for both Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours.

The Bottom Line.

Our recommendation: Star Tours: The Adventures Continue is not to be missed. Would it be nicer if it were in Galaxy’s Edge? Maybe. Nevertheless, it offers a great experience from takeoff to landing. No matter where you go or who you see!

Have you ridden Star Tours? What did you think? Let us know in the comments.

The Teide Observatory began to operate in 1964 and focuses on solar observations and robotic astronomy. We want to show it to you from the inside on the Astronomic Tour, our excursion including an afternoon Teide Observatory visit, during which you will learn about the scientific activity of the researchers who work at this important centre, observe the Sun and watch solar “flares” or prominences using small solar telescopes. If all you want from your holidays is an outstanding Tenerife astronomy trip without riding the cable car or visiting the Observatory, our Astronomical Observation on Teide excursion is just what you’re looking for.

We’ll meet you in the car park of the cable car base station where you will enjoy amazing stargazing; Tenerife offers a world-famous experience so join our Starlight guides and use long-range telescopes on the best Tenerife stargazing tour.

Visiting Teide at night to observe the stars is a fantastic experience and we provide you with the possibility of doing it on an excursion that includes transportation and that has been specially designed to enjoy the most magical hours in the National Park.

Watch the sunset from a viewpoint in the National Park, which we will choose for the occasion, and welcome the night and stargazing in Tenerife while learning the secrets of the sky alongside our Starlight guides. You will be able to observe the constellations and stars as you have never seen them before thanks to the long-range telescopes that we put at your disposal.

Teide National Park is famous for having the highest mountain in Spain, which is easily accessed by cable car , but as you now know, the park also has the largest solar observatory in the world: Teide Observatory.

You’ve read about excursions to the Observatory in combination with Mount Teide stargazing, but what if you just want to visit the Observatory without stargazing? Tenerife has something for everyone. The Observatory can be visited during the daytime, independently. Just don’t forget that the Observatory isn’t accessible at night, only in the mornings or afternoons.

Our activities for visiting the Observatory

Your wish is our command and if you don’t want to go stargazing but love to observe the skies, you can visit the largest solar observatory in the world during the daytime. This is what we can offer:

  • Guided visit of the Observatory without transport. Arrive on your own to enjoy a daytime visit to the largest solar observatory in the world without a Tenerife astronomy trip.

  • Tours and activities platform available on Eurostar app and website
  • Customers can book 5,000 experiences in the UK, France, Belgium and The Netherlands
  • Platform developed and populated by TUI – Eurostar’s preferred Tours & Activities partner
  • Partnership continues TUI’s strategic growth in tours and activities

TUI Group, the world’s leading tourism group, is powering an upgraded tours and activities platform for Eurostar, the high-speed rail link between the UK and mainland Europe. The agreement with Eurostar continues TUI’s strong and strategic growth in tours and activities, including a steadily increasing number of partnerships with high-profile European businesses.

The enhanced version of the digital platform now enables Eurostar customers to choose from over 5,000 excursions, activities and tickets, available in all Eurostar destinations. In the UK there are hundreds of activities in London alone, but customers can also book excursions in Oxford, Cambridge, Cardiff and Edinburgh. There are also experiences available throughout France, the Netherlands and Belgium, including options in the key city destinations of Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels, as well as Versailles, the French Riviera, Rotterdam and Antwerp for those looking to travel on to Eurostar’s connecting destinations.

Henry Ledden, Head of Digital, Eurostar, said: “As people start planning their first trips after lockdowns, they are looking for new experiences. Our updated activities platform offers a selection of the best things to do across our destinations making it even easier to plan an escape as travel restrictions ease.”

The existing tours and activities agreement between TUI and Eurostar started in 2018, but the custom-built digital distribution platform is part of a wider collaboration that sees TUI become Eurostar’s preferred Tours & Activities partner. In addition to developing the digital platform, TUI is also providing all 5,000 excursions, activities and tickets.

“Eurostar was our first international rail partner, and we are very proud to grow our collaboration, providing a digital solution to deliver more great experiences for their customers.” Commented Nishank Gopalkrishnan, Chief Business Officer of TUI Musement, the Tours & Activities division of TUI Group. “This is also further recognition of the growth of our supply portfolio, globally and within Europe, and the scalability of our digital distribution solutions.”

A diverse selection of experiences is available, from skip the line options at world famous landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, Stonehenge and Harry Potter Studios, to must-do activities, including boating along Amsterdam’s canals, Belgian beer tasting and the Downton Abbey tour. Available prior to travel or while in destination, experiences can be booked via the Eurostar website and app, with unique offers and discounts available exclusively to Eurostar customers.

TUI / Star Tour

Description.

The German based travel operator TUI, formerly known in Norway as Star Tour, will cut a total of 150 jobs in Oslo (Norway), Malmö (Sweden) and Helsinki (Finland) following a closure of airbases in those cities. The company is closing down the airbases to increase flexibility, cut costs and respond to changes in the market. Norwegian and Jettime will take over the flight routes that TUI is closing down.

TUI has started negotiations with the trade unions. A company spokeperson states that the company will do their best to ensure that the employees are taken care of, possible by the companies taking over the flight routes. The trade union Parat is critical to the closure. In a press release, a shop steward states that the trade union understands the competitive situation of Norwegian and international aviation, but also that the closure shows a lack of responsibility for the employees.

TUI Norway was established in 1973 as Star Tour, and has since then become a part of TUI Nordic and the TUI Group (from 2000). The company covers the whole travelling sector value chain from package tours, flights, cruises and hotels.

Museum of Skyscrapers and High-rise building

The skyscrapers with heights of more than two hundred meters can be rarely seen in European cities, not to speak of supertalls, even London has only one supertall built that slightly exceeding 1000 feet to its tip. However, there is an exception – Moscow! The city now has many supertalls built or topped out including the tallest building in Europe.

The exposition of the museum consists of two parts: the history of high-rise construction in Moscow and the history of the creation of «Moscow-City». The historical part tells how Moscow grew up: from the Bell tower of Ivan the Great to the Stalinist skyscrapers and today’s skyscrapers «Moscow-City». Here you can see a unique historical photograph — the panorama of Moscow in 1867, taken from the highest point of the capital at that time — the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Part of the exhibition, dedicated to the history of the creation of «Moscow-City», introduces the skyscrapers of the complex — the name, height, architectural and technical features of each. In addition, in the archive of Moscow-City there are architectural projects, which remained only on paper. One of them — the tower «Russia», which was invented by renowned architect Norman Foster.

As part of a tour we are doing, they offer a trip to Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, for an extra £80 per person. They are not very informative on what you actually get to see out there, I understand that the facility is rather restricted.

If you have been, would you recommend at trip out there? What do the "public" actually have access to?

As always, thank you so much for your help!

' class=

I haven't been there myself, but a friend of mine has, and he said it is not that great. He was disappointed by how little he was actually able to see. He mentioned the "mock-up" of the Mir space station as perhaps the most interesting part.

' class=

You have access to the Mir space station mock up, as well seeing the largest centrifuge used for cosmonaut training.

I really enjoyed it, however some others on the tour thought it was a waste of time, as they were expecting to be able to dress up in space suits and things like that. I think mostly the experience is hearing about the training the cosmonauts go through, and how zero gravity affects you etc. Our group had an excellent guide and I think this has a lot to do with why I enjoyed the tour.

A History of The Actors Studio

Written by Andreas Manolikakis

The Actors Studio was founded in New York by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis in 1947. For seven decades it has been devoted to the service and development of theatre artists –actors, directors and playwrights. To our members, who are primarily actors, The Actors Studio offers free lifetime membership, with no fee or tuition required, which entitles them to a unique opportunity to explore and improve their craft in a safe, laboratory environment with colleagues with whom they share the same process of work.

The roots of The Actors Studio go back to the Group Theatre (1931-1941) whose work was inspired by the discoveries of the great Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski and his best student Eugene Vakhtangov as revealed in the legendary productions that the Moscow Art Theatre toured in America in 1923. In fact Stanislavski’s dedication to his book, ‘My Life in Art,’ (1924) reads: “I DEDICATE THIS BOOK IN GRATITUDE TO HOSPITABLE AMERICA AS A TOKEN AND A REMEMBRANCE FROM THE MOSCOW ART THEATRE WHICH SHE TOOK SO KINDLY TO HER HEART.”

When the Moscow Art Theatre ended its American tour, several members of the theatre stayed behind and trained artists, including Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman and Stella Adler, who would go on to form the Group Theatre along with other artists such as Elia Kazan, Sanford Meisner and Robert Lewis. These artists studied, explored, developed and improved the work of the Russian masters with extraordinary results that were unique in the history of the American theatre and a new kind of acting was born.

After the Group Theatre closed, in 1941, many of its members went their separate ways. Elia Kazan has stated that one of the principal reasons he created The Actors Studio, in 1947, was in order to preserve and develop this new American acting. He wanted to create a not-for-profit organization that would provide a laboratory, a private workshop in which the professional actor could work on his or her craft, far away from the commercial pressures of casting, rehearsal and performance. It was to be a place that would offer its member-artists an ongoing training, a continuity of work and the feeling of an artistic home like they had at the Group Theatre.

At the Studio, it was eventually decided that membership should be achieved through an audition process of preliminary and then final auditions where the only requirements are talent and the possibility of improvement.

In 1948, Lee Strasberg was asked by Elia Kazan to join the Studio as one of its teachers and in 1951 he became its Artistic Director, a position he maintained until his death in 1982. Strasberg’s deep understanding of the Stanislavski System and the reformulations of Vakhtangov, together with his own personal discoveries and improvements on the acting process, provided the foundation on which The Actors Studio based its work.

At the same time, the work of Elia Kazan as a theatre and film director demonstrated in the most powerful way the extraordinary results of the deep and personal process of acting espoused by The Actors Studio.

For seven decades, the very existence of The Actors Studio, the principles and values that it represents, the methodology of its work process, its consistency and long life have established the Studio as a unique theatre organization and a guiding light for actors, directors and playwrights around the world. For many it is considered the temple of the acting process.

Today the work that is done at The Actors Studio continues the Stanislavski-Vakhtangov-American approach, and most of the leading members of the Studio today have studied with more than one of these great American teachers: Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman, Elia Kazan, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Robert Lewis.

Currently, Ellen Burstyn, Alec Baldwin and Al Pacino serve as co-Presidents of the Studio. Beau Gravitte serves as Artistic Director in New York and Salome Jens and Lou Antonio serve as interim co-Associate Artistic Directors in West Hollywood at our Actors Studio West branch, which opened in 1966. The Actors Studio is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of members from both coasts.

After 70 years, The Actors Studio continues to thrive because it is needed. Goethe has said that, “The actor’s career develops in public, but his art develops in private.” The Studio provides its members with this special kind of privacy, along with a group of colleagues who share the same passion for what Studio members refer to as “The Work.”

In spite of the presence of The Actors Studio over many years and its extensive influence in America and worldwide, there still persist many misunderstandings of the Studio, its mentors, its philosophy and its process. These errors most often arise from discussions by some academics, theoreticians, historians and even by some theatre professionals who attempt to analyze and interpret a process of work that they have never learned through serious practice. The work of Stanislavski, Vakhtangov and The Actors Studio was arrived at through deep and lengthy practical experiments that elude rational analysis by non-practitioners.

In 1994 The Actors Studio entered a major new phase with the creation of The Actors Studio Drama School MFA (Master of Fine Arts) Program in acting, directing and playwriting, in order to bring the Studio’s method into a university setting. In September 2006, the Actors Studio Drama School moved to Pace University in downtown New York City, which also is the home of one of the program’s most visible teaching platforms, INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO, hosted by James Lipton.

Andreas Manolikakis is a Board Member of The Actors Studio and Chair of The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City.
