Grindstaff and co-workers Joseph Sorokin and Jack Finlay teamed up to deliver all the background sounds and effects on the fabled CBS show, which ran from 1966-1969. (CBS is CNET's parent company.)  In 1967, Grindstaff was nominated for an Emmy Award in the Individual Achievements in Film and Sound Editing category.

Fans appreciated Grindstaff's work. "He made the Enterprise come alive," wrote Twitter user Kelly Key. "The background buzz on the bridge always reminded me of crickets and cicadas from a field on a summer night -- full of life and activity."

Why must all the great people die...RIP Douglas ♡ — san || 🖖 (@triwizardkirk) July 26, 2018

Grindstaff is survived by his wife Marcia, his three children and her three children, and by 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, with more on the way. Grindstaff, a Korean War combat veteran, also worked on such shows as The Brady Bunch, Dallas and Mission: Impossible.

Take a listen to some of the memorable sounds Grindstaff helped bring to life.

1. Red alert klaxon

Set this one up on your iPhone for the most unnerving wake-up alarm ever.

2. Transporter sounds

Some of us seriously thought this would be the transportation of the future. Still waiting though.

3. Tribbles cooing

Poor Kirk just wanted his chicken sandwich and coffee, Tribble-free.

4. Phasers firing

Some of us may've made these noises while running around the backyard pointing random objects at our neighbors.

5. Bridge doors

Modern doors just don't close with this satisfying swoosh.

6. Boatswain's whistle

On the original show, the boatswain's (pronounced BEAU-son's) whistle was used to open shipboard communications via the ship's intercom. You'll know it when you hear it.

7. Heartbeats

Dr. McCoy probably heard a lot of these in sick bay.

8. Hull hit

That sounds like a bad one.

9. Inside the shuttle craft

Lots of sounds share space inside the shuttle.

10. Sick bay scanners

These sound a little bit like a plaintive waterfowl calling to its mate.

11. Warp drive

Brace yourself: Warp speed, Mr. Sulu.

12. Food and drink synthesizer

Kirk was more of a coffee achiever, but later on, Jean-Luc Picard would demand his "Earl Grey, hot."

13. Open a hailing frequency

Nichelle Nichols' Lt. Uhura, the Enterprise's communications officer, was a pioneering character.

First published July 30, 4:29 p.m. PT.  Update, July 31, 1:09 p.m. PT:  Adds some of Grindstaff's most iconic sounds.

Ask any cosplayer : One of the most enduring aspects of Star Trek is the famous Starfleet uniform.

The instantly recognizables colors and iconic pointy badge have been adapted for new TV series', movies and games from The Original Series up to the latest Trek adventures Discovery , Picard ,  Lower Decks  and Strange New Worlds . Check out the many outfits worn by the crew of the Enterprise on their continuing mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and boldly look cooler than anyone before.

Originally conceived by costume designer William Ware Theiss, the colorful pop art outfit debuted in 1966 in The Original Series.

The multicolored uniforms looked great in the luminous cartoon world of The Animated Series.

When I was being employed by my earlier company I was looking to find authentic work at home opportunities in which I can earn a nice income and also additionally enjoy plenty of time to commit with my family members and offcourse I am not seeking scams that misguide you to make you very very rich in simply few days or so. Ultimately I discovered a great opportunity and I can't tell you how glad I am nowadays. The best things about doing work from internet are: Your Workplace Can Be Anywhere- you’re not bound to your home. You can take proper care of your job on a trip, having fun in the great outdoors , or perhaps enjoying your favorite band at a live music show. And you can additionally save on food items expenses since you’ll easily be able to whip up your own dinner and coffee when you work-from-home. Your Schedule Can Be Your Own: Lots of the work that can be done remotely these days can also be done on a flexible schedule. If you do have to work specific hours, you’re sure to still have some break time—time you can use however you’d like! Even if you have just 10 minutes, you can do something which just wouldn’t be possible in a traditional office: bust those samba moves, play a few tunes on your guitar, or even take a relaxing power nap. You’re guaranteed to get back feeling more refreshed than you would after ten minutes at your desk surfing Youtube. You Can Learn More and Become More Self-dependent:Because you don’t have colleagues just a few feet away or a tech team 1 floor down, you’ll find yourself growing the skill of looking for your own answers and becoming more proactive to find what you need on your own. Introduction: Star Trek Red Alert Sound Effect (using 555 Timers)

Star Trek Red Alert Sound Effect (using 555 Timers)

My family went on a Star Trek kick recently and I was trying to make something related so I made this to simulate the Star Trek red alert.

First I looked online to find a circuit diagram but I couldn't find any working projects that didn't use an audio recording module. (which doesn't count!)

So I had to make my own that sounded fairly authentic, (by which I mean that I listened to the red alert in videos while adjusting the circuit) and I think I succeeded!

Step 1: Materials

Materials

The things you will need to build this are as follows:

  • Power supply 5V - 15V
  • 555 timers x 2
  • PNP transistor (BJT)
  • NPN transistor (BJT)
  • Select switch
  • 10KΩ potentiometer x 2
  • A bypass capacitor is recommended

A voltmeter is not required but may help with circuit debug.

Step 2: Making It

Making It

(Thanks to user bricomario for the new schematic picture! I had an old one I drew in fritzing that wasn't nearly as nice.)

Put the parts together as in the schematic above.

Then you will need to adjust the potentiometers until you find the right frequency, for me that was at 1/3 of the rotation and 2/3 of the rotation respectively.

Step 3: Theory

Theory

Now here comes the theory, if you are too scared (of theory) or already understand how it works then you can be finished!

First you need to understand the 555 timer .

The first 555 timer is an astable multi-vibrator that is controlled by the voltage from the switch, when the voltage is high then it operates normally, but when the voltage is low it inhibits the operation of the 555 using the reset pin.

Then when the output of the 555 goes high it charges the capacitors through the diode, which as they discharge slowly through the 10KΩ resistor (labeled R4) they create the changing tone you hear.

When the first 555 is high then the second is inhibited, but when it goes low the second is enabled to create the tones determined by the capacitor's charge level.

Now use your voltmeter to measure the voltage at the base of the PNP transistor, as the LED flashes you should be able to see the change in the voltage.

Now put your meter's leads in series with the speaker and measure the current through the speaker.

Kenneth Mitchell , who played several characters in Star Trek: Discovery , and also was known for his roles in Jericho and Captain Marvel, has died from complications of ALS, his family revealed Saturday. He was 49.

“With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son and dear friend,” his family shared on X/Twitter.

Mitchell announced publicly that he’d been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2020 in an interview with People.

“The moment that they told us it was [ALS], it was like I was in my own movie,” Mitchell told the publication. “That’s what it felt like, like I was watching that scene where someone is being told that they have a terminal illness. It was just a complete disbelief, a shock.”

Mitchell played three Klingon characters in Star Trek: Discovery’ s first two seasons. He portrayed Kol in Season 1, Kol-Sha and Tenavik in Season 2. In Season 3, as the disease progressed, he played Aurellio, a character who used a hoverchair, created to incorporate his need for a wheelchair, into the series.

He also voiced three characters in the first season of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 1, a black ops operative and a Romulan guard.

StarTrek.com also posted a tribute to Mitchell.

“Being a part of Star Trek keeps me inspired and gives me purpose,” Mitchell told Syfy Wire in 2020. “Hopefully, that will keep going.”

Mitchell is survived by his wife, Susan, their children, Lilah and Kallum, his parents and in-laws and several nieces and nephews.

The family asks that any gifts be directed toward ALS research or toward his children. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the children.
