Bruce Springsteen flies nearly 3,000 miles to join Zach Bryan on stage in Brooklyn

Bruce Springsteen is flying high.

The Boss joined country star Zach Bryan, 27, on stage March 27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Springsteen performed March 25 in San Diego with the E Street Band, and he's scheduled to play Thursday, March 28, at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

Springsteen and Bryan performed “Sandpaper” with Bryan's band, and they were joined by Maggie Rogers for the Bryan hit “Revival.” The Boss took a solo on guitar for the latter.

“Brooklyn let's go!” shouted Bryan during “Revival,” according to social media videos. Bryan, an Oklahoma native and a Navy vet, was wearing a Springsteen tour T-shirt.

Country fans were impressed.

“Zach Bryan onstage with Bruce Springsteen has officially topped any collab anyone could ever do,” commented a fan on X.

Bryan’s The Quittin’ Time Tour was also a hit in New Jersey. Two shows at the Prudential Center in Newark broke that venue's attendance record with 18,641 fans on March 14, and 19,151 fans on March 15.

Springsteen and the E Street Band relaunched their tour March 19 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix after the Boss, 74, postponed shows in September due to a bout with peptic ulcer disease.

Just 48 hours after a show in San Diego and less than 24 hours before he is set to perform at San Francisco’s Chase Center, Bruce Springsteen logged some serious (private) air miles for a surprise performance at country superstar Zach Bryan ‘s concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Wednesday night.

Singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers , who is featured on Bryan’s “Dawns,” performed that song with the headliner earlier in the evening and joined him for the encores with Springsteen.

While the concert presumably wasn’t the only reason Springsteen flew cross-country, his history has shown he’ll pick up a guitar and join a friend onstage whenever he has time.

Earlier this month, Bryan broke an attendance record in Springsteen’s home state of New Jersey at the Prudential Center in Newark on March 15. Bryan’s “Quittin Time” tour marked the highest attendance ever for a single show in the Newark arena’s 16-plus year history with 19,151 guests in attendance.

Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour consists partially of dates he’d rescheduled from last year after suffering a peptic ulcer. The dates in the U.S. are in two groups: a month-long swing taking place in mid-March through mid-April, followed by a second month’s worth of shows in mid-August through mid-September, with European shows coming in-between.

In the penultimate episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Bruce Springsteen comes down with COVID after meeting Larry David.

As a result, his “Bruce Springsteen” character had to put his “farewell tour” on hold and the audience was led to believe “he may never sing again.”

Thankfully, the 74-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is COVID-free and midway through an arena tour , that, as far as we know, is not his last.

Based on our findings, Springsteen and his E Street Band have 21 concerts lined up all over North America from now up until November this year.

Along the way, they’ll stop into Albany’s MVP Arena on Monday, April 15 and Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome on Thursday, April 18.

They’ll also headline the 2024 Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park, NJ on Sunday, Sept. 15 along with Noah Kahan , The Gaslight Anthem , Trey Anastasio Band , and more.

For fans who want to catch The Boss live this year, tickets are available for all upcoming gigs.

At the time of publication, we found seats for select shows going for as low as $53 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other concerts had tickets starting anywhere from $57 to $484 before fees.

Sea.Hear.Now Festival 2024

For the first time since December 2010, Springsteen is performing in his hometown Asbury Park.

The Sea.Hear.Now Festival , taking place Sept. 14-15, will mark The Boss’ headline homecoming.

He’ll be joined by notable acts Norah Jones , Black Crowes , 311 , The Revivalists and Kool and the Gang at the genre-hopping extravaganza in addition to the big names listed earlier.

Bruce Springsteen concert review

On Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, the New York Post saw Springsteen in concert at East Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium.

“Each song bled into the next with Bruce’s signature “1, 2, 3, 4!” cry giving the crowd a full-on musical thrill ride that never ran out of gas and was simultaneously heavy, silly and soaring sometimes all within the span of one song,” the publication reported.

Bruce Springsteen recovery

Shortly after Springsteen’s three-concert stint at MetLife last year, he postponed the rest of his tour due to a peptic ulcer disease.

“Bruce Springsteen has continued to recover steadily from peptic ulcer disease over the past few weeks and will continue treatment through the rest of the year on doctor’s advice,” the group shared on  Instagram last September.

In his first show back at Phoenix’s Footprint Center, Springsteen addressed the postponement.

“Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time,” Springsteen said to the crowd. “I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

Bruce Springsteen Signs Absentee Note for Young Fan During San Francisco Concert

The rock icon helped one of his young audience members out during a show on Sunday March 31

Bruce Springsteen is all for a fan playing hooky.

During his San Francisco concert at the Chase Center on Sunday, March 31, "The Boss," 74, made an audience member's day by signing an absentee note for them.

According to fan-posted video and photos from the event, a young fan caught Springsteen's attention with a sign that read "Skipping school. Sign my note?"

The "Born to Run" artist happily obliged and kneeled down on the stage to sign the unnamed fan's note.

After postponing several of his 2023 tour dates due to  peptic ulcer disease , Springsteen returned to the stage late last month.

According to the Associated Press , the rock icon was in good spirits at the Footprint Center in Phoenix as he performed alongside the E Street Band, sans wife wife  Patti Scialfa .

In a pair of dark jeans and a red flannel shirt, Springsteen was greeted by a cheering crowd yelling “Bruuuuce!” ahead of his performance, per the publication.

His 29-song set included hits like "Born to Run" and a string of soul covers like “Nightshift” by the Commodores, “Because The Night” by Patti Smith Group, and “Twist and Shout” by The Top Notes/The Isley Brothers/The Beatles.

During the gig, Springsteen also addressed his illness before starting his final track "I’ll See You In My Dream," per the AP.

"Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time. . . . I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much," he told fans, according to the outlet.

In May 2022, Springsteen  announced  that he'd be heading out on tour in February 2023 for his and the band's first international run since 2017, and their first US tour dates since 2016.

However, his road back to the stage didn't go as smoothly as expected.

Just a month after the tour kicked off, Springsteen  postponed three shows  in a week "due to illness," according to a statement shared on the musician's Twitter page.

By August, the singer/songwriter had to  postpone two of his Philadelphia shows  due to having “taken ill."

In early September — through a statement shared on the singer's social media accounts — it was revealed that he was  "being treated for symptoms of peptic ulcer disease."

Under the "decision of his medical advisors," the remainder of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band's September shows  were postponed .

Proof That Zach Bryan Is A Big Deal: He Just Got Bruce Springsteen To Fly Across The Country To Perform With Him

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band resumed tour earlier this month after having to postpone 2023 dates due to Springsteen’s peptic ulcer disease . The 2024 world tour began on the West Coast — having performed in San Diego, California on Monday, March 25, and preparing to perform in San Francisco, California this weekend — and Springsteen must be feeling better because he also flew across the country to appear at Zach Bryan’s The Quittin Time Tour show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York .

According to setlist.fm , Springsteen popped onto the stage during Bryan’s encore. First, Bryan performed “Sandpaper” as a duet with Springsteen, and then Maggie Rogers joined the party for “Revival,” which included a Springsteen guitar solo that seemingly left Bryan and Rogers awestruck. (Earlier in the concert, Rogers performed “ Dawns ” with Bryan.)

Bryan was a little nervous and jokingly apologized to the crowd because he “messed [Springsteen] up.” During Springsteen’s “Revival” solo, Rogers could not have had more fun playing the tambourine.

Bryan will retake Barclays Center on Thursday night, March 28, but fans will presumably be bummed that they didn’t have tickets to the March 27 show.

Puzzling out Moscow for visitors under 30

Hugging strangers, reciting poetry and looking for bird-shaped graffiti is not usually part of a city tour—but Moscow Game Tour is no ordinary company.

Nikita Bogdanov, 25, founder of the company, says: “It’s not a regular tour, it’s a quest. You interact with Russian people, and you gain more experience.”

Moscow Game Tour is one of a new breed of innovative tours run by and for young people. They are either low-cost or free, and prioritise interacting with locals over traditional sightseeing.

Mr Bogdanov started Moscow Game Tour in 2009 to encourage visitors to explore areas outside the city centre. In the tour, which costs 700 roubles (about $22), participants are “players” and complete challenges that lead them to clues in the shape of a matryoshka doll.

Many tasks involve asking passers-by for directions or trying a Russian phrase. Along the way, players discover interesting features such as a monastery canteen, or a Socialist Realist statue.

Some clues are easier to locate than others. “There was one spot that we absolutely could not find,” says Vera Baranova, 25, who took part in a quest at Tsaritsyno Park in south-east Moscow. “When we asked someone, it turned out that we were actually right on top of it.”

Mr Bogdanov also operates the Moscow Free Tour, which provides an overview of major sites between Kitai Gorod and the Kremlin free of charge. In peak season, this more traditional outing attracts between a dozen and 40 people every day; the Game Tour runs only once or twice a week and usually attracts between five and 10 participants. Convincing visitors to sign up for an unconventional tour can be a challenge. “The Free Tour is more popular because it’s more easily understandable,” Mr Bogdanov says. “For the Game Tour, you need to explain to people what it is.”

Business has picked up as Mr Bogdanov has formed relationships with hotels, major tour agencies including TUI and companies such as Google. This year, he also began receiving support from Moscow’s Committee for Tourism and the Hotel Industry, which has launched a programme called “Moscow Fresh” to support creative tourism.

In addition to the Free Tour and Game Tour, Mr Bogdanov’s company offers daily paid-for tours with a variety of themes. The retro Communist Tour visits central Soviet landmarks, including the Lubyanka (former headquarters of the KGB); the Gulag Museum; a Soviet-style canteen and Eliseevsky, a regal shop on Tverskaya Street considered the grandest store in the Soviet Union (which these days sells imported French yoghurt and other modern luxuries).

Visitors can also venture below ground on the Metro Tour.  The latter stops at some of the most ornate stations in Moscow’s beloved Stalinist metro system, such as the mosaic-adorned Komsomolskaya. In an attempt to supply visitors with information beyond the average pocket guide, the tour recounts little-known facts about the metro, such as how many babies have been born on it.

Alexei Sotskov, 30, was inspired to start Moscow Greeter , a local franchise of the international Greeter network, after giving informal tours to friends. “I have a lot of friends in foreign countries, and when they come to Moscow I show them interesting places. So I thought it would be a great idea to start running a tourist service,” he says.

The greeters are mostly students learning English who take visitors to lesser-known sights, such as the former royal estate Kolomenskoye, as well as exhibitions and sporting events. The greeters not only show the tourists around but they also chat to them. “Greeters talk about their lives, their parents, where they’re from in Moscow, and where they study,” says Mr Sotskov. 

“Traditional guides just give people information they read in a book.”

Valentina Lebedeva, a second-year linguistics student, has been a greeter for two months. “When most people come to Moscow, they visit the Kremlin and everything, but they go back and they still don’t really get how people really live here,” she says.

“Greeters offers tourists a good way to get a real impression of Russia, so that you don’t just visit the usual tourist sights.”

Another unconventional tour company, Lovely Russia , also strives to provide a more engaging experience for tourists. “A lot of the tours I saw being run by tour providers were really boring, just buses with large crowds of 60 year-olds,” says the company’s co-founder Anna Shegurova, 25. “There was not a lot for a younger crowd, a more off-the-beaten-path kind of thing.” Lovely Russia offers a variety of $22 tours in English. Locations include metro stations, Constructivist landmarks and a “Moscow as it is” outing that winds through the city’s side streets. At the end of the tour, guides suggest places where participants can enjoy a beer.

Ms Shegurova says the guides try to show visitors “a different side of Russia”.

“It’s a great city with a really long and interesting history… but you wouldn’t really know unless you have someone with you who’s able to share this history and make it interesting,” she says.

For visitors without a guide, getting around Moscow can still be a challenge. Over the past year,  some English-language signs indicating the locations of historical sights have been put up, but metro and street signs remain in Cyrillic.

Mila, volunteer for 'wow local'

“Coming here, it’s very hard to get orientated,” says Irina Tripapina, 25, the organiser of WowLocal . “We decided to compensate for the lack of information in English by establishing a community of volunteers who are willing to help visitors find their way.” After passing language and navigation tests, WowLocal volunteers are given T-shirts and badges emblazoned with the phrase “Ask Me, I’m Local.” 

“Tourists can meet WowLocal at any part of the city and at any time – even at night in Butovo,” says Ms Tripapina, referring to the suburb south of Moscow.

Since the project started in July, Ms Tripapina says it has recruited about 400 volunteers. She wears her badge every day on her way to work, and says she’s frequently stopped by foreigners asking for directions (as well as Russians looking for the metro).

Occasionally, she fields some more unusual requests: “Once, a guy from Britain asked me where to get a bowl of pelmeni,” she says.

WowLocal also brings together local people and tourists through city navigation games and conversation clubs at hostels. “We bring volunteers together with the travellers, so that they can share with each other,” explains Ms Tripapina.
