Caribbean cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

"All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray …" When the weather turns cold, you could be California dreamin' but doesn't a Caribbean cruise sound so much more relaxing?

Many people would agree with me that a Caribbean cruise is the perfect antidote to the winter doldrums and work stress, plus a wonderful way to reconnect with friends and loved ones. The ship takes care of everything -- transportation, accommodation, meals and entertainment – so you can skip much of the daily planning drama and simply enjoy your vacation and travel companions. Every day you wake up to warm weather and sunny skies (well, most of the time) and a new destination promising white sand beaches, fun activities and memories to be made.

The biggest decision you have to make is between a pina colada and a strawberry daiquiri.

Don't let planning a rejuvenating vacation add more stress to your life. This Caribbean cruise guide gives you the lowdown on everything you need to know to plan the perfect island getaway.

Why cruise to the Caribbean?

western caribbean cruise best time go

Sun, sand and sea are what most travelers want when they book a cruise to the Caribbean. If you want to trade chilly weather at home for warm, sunny days spent relaxing on a beach or swimming in clear blue waters, a Caribbean cruise is an ideal vacation. Unlike a resort stay, you can sample multiple beaches in various destinations, as well as the pool life on board the ship.

Many people choose Caribbean cruises because they're affordable getaways to tropical destinations. The sailings depart from several U.S. home ports — from Galveston, Texas, to Boston — so many Americans can drive to their departure ports and avoid paying for airfare.

Plus, cruise ships can change course to avoid bad weather, such as hurricanes, so you can salvage your beach vacation when a storm is headed toward a particular island by cruising to a different one. If you booked a land-based stay, you'd be forced to cancel — or hunker down and wait for the rain and winds to pass.

When do cruises go to the Caribbean?

Caribbean cruises sail year-round, so you can plan your trip for the winter holidays, spring break or summer vacation. However, more ships sail this region of the world in the winter, when other destinations (such as the Mediterranean, Baltic, Canada/New England and Bermuda) are too chilly for vacations at sea.

The luxury and upscale cruise lines especially tend to only base ships in the Caribbean during the winter because their fleets are too small to base a ship there year-round — and their passengers want to explore bucket list destinations around the world.

Best Caribbean itineraries

western caribbean cruise best time go

Cruise lines divide the Caribbean into three regions: Eastern, Western and Southern. Itineraries tend to concentrate on one area, but longer itineraries may include islands in two or all of the regions, as well as ports in the Bahamas and Florida.

Which itinerary is best for you will depend primarily on which port you want to depart from and how long a vacation you can take. Once you see the options that fit your parameters, you'll want to look at how many port stops versus sea days an itinerary has and which specific islands you'll visit.

The best Caribbean itineraries for first-time cruisers are often the seven-night Eastern or seven-night Western Caribbean cruises out of Florida home ports, such as Miami , Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral (near Orlando).

Western Caribbean

You'll find two main types of Western Caribbean cruises, and both are fabulous introductions to Caribbean culture and attractions. The classic Western Caribbean itinerary visits Mexico (typically Cozumel or Costa Maya), Jamaica, Grand Cayman and a cruise line's private island, which is typically in the Bahamas.

However, some ships sail a Western Caribbean itinerary that's more focused on Central America, with stops in Mexico, Belize and Honduras. These itineraries are great for travelers who are interested in Mayan or Mexican culture in addition to beaches and water sports.

Western Caribbean itineraries are typically a week, but can be as short as four days (with just one stop in Mexico) or as long as 12 days (though these might include stops in the Bahamas, too). You can find departures from ports all along the U.S. East Coast, Gulf Coast and Florida.

Eastern Caribbean

Another popular itinerary for first-timers is the Eastern Caribbean, with visits to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic and/or San Juan, Puerto Rico. Private island and Bahamas stops are common. Longer cruises or smaller-ship itineraries might stop elsewhere in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, Antigua or St. Kitts.

These itineraries are slightly more targeted toward beach time and water sports, with fewer options for historical or cultural attractions than their Western Caribbean counterparts.

As with the Western Caribbean, seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruises are the most common itinerary length. The shortest options are four nights, typically visiting only Grand Turk or Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The longest, around 10 to 12 nights, will often include Southern Caribbean ports or start from more northerly home ports.

You can find departures from ports as far west as Galveston and as far north as the New York area, but the majority of true Eastern Caribbean cruises set sail from Florida or Puerto Rico.

Related: Eastern Caribbean vs. Western Caribbean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

Southern Caribbean

Southern Caribbean cruises tend to attract luxury travelers and repeat cruisers. That's because these islands are farther from U.S. shores, meaning you'll need to fly to an island to catch your cruise ship or need more than a week's vacation to get from Florida all the way south to ports in Aruba or St. Lucia and back. The islands themselves tend to be more exclusive, with fewer ships visiting on any given day.

Common destinations on Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries include Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique and Grenada. You'll find everything from gorgeous beaches and diving destinations to lush rainforests and flowing waterfalls.

The shortest Southern Caribbean cruises are five or six days and leave from places such as Barbados, San Juan and St. Thomas. You can find weeklong sailings from Florida, but more commonly, they're eight nights or longer.

The Bahamas and Florida

Yes, I know that the Bahamas is technically located in the Atlantic, but it's an easy mistake to think the balmy islands are found in the Caribbean. Besides, many cruises add stops in the Bahamas to a Caribbean cruise. The majority of the cruise line private islands are located in the Bahamas, and these appear regularly on all Caribbean itineraries. The Bahamian ports of Nassau and Freeport, even Florida's Key West, may appear on Caribbean-centric cruises.

Why? They're close to the U.S. and cruise lines use these ports to break up the multiple days at sea needed to sail farther south into the Caribbean proper.

Best Caribbean cruise lines

western caribbean cruise best time go

You'll be hard-pressed to find a cruise line that does not sail to the Caribbean at least for a few months a year. The big-ship lines will station multiple ships in this region year-round, with additional ships swinging by during the colder months.

If you consider the best Caribbean cruise lines to be the ones with the most ship and itinerary choices, look to the big-ship lines such as Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line .

These lines offer a range of itinerary lengths, port combinations and departure cities from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. Their biggest and newest ships are often deployed to the Caribbean, so you can find all the latest celebrity-backed restaurants, crazy top-deck attractions (like waterslides, climbing walls and roller coaster rides) and expanded cabin choices. These lines cater to all ages, including older couples and families with children.

Related: The best Caribbean cruise for every type of traveler

If you're looking for an adults-only option, Virgin Voyages caters to the young at heart with its edgy new ships. It offers six- and seven-night Caribbean cruises from the late fall until early spring. Viking takes an entirely different approach to no-kids cruises, catering to mature travelers craving culture and educational vacations. It also offers wintertime Caribbean cruises, though many are paired with a Panama Canal crossing.

Luxury lovers should look at the smaller ships of the Seabourn , Silversea and Regent Seven Seas fleets for opulent accommodations and fine dining while sailing the tropics. Oceania , Azamara and Windstar Cruises are less inclusive, but still high end.

For something a little different, try SeaDream Yacht Club for a super-small ship that feels like a private yacht, complete with an emphasis on alfresco recreation and dining. Star Clippers appeals to sailing enthusiasts with its masted ships, simple entertainment and emphasis on water sports.

Things to do in the Caribbean

White sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters are the biggest attractions for most Caribbean cruisers. You'll be hard-pressed to find a Caribbean cruise port that does not offer beach access. Whether you enjoy a cruise line's private beach, a public beach lined with bars or get a day pass to a resort or beach club, you can rarely go wrong with a beach day in the islands.

Water sports are another quintessential Caribbean attraction. Cruisers can swim, snorkel and scuba dive, of course, but they can also kayak, snuba, Jet Ski, sail and parasail. Sometimes you can do these things right from whatever beach is your destination for the day. Otherwise, book a tour to the best spots or for a guided activity. Or, book a leisurely sunset sail or high-octane party cruise to get on the water, not necessarily in it.

Shopping is a popular diversion, from high-end French stores in Martinique and St. Barts to crafts markets and souvenir shops. Historical attractions range from forts erected to protect against pirates to Mayan temples. Cultural tours focus on local cuisine, wine and spirits, and dancing. (Yes, even you can learn to salsa.) Active travelers will find plenty of hiking, biking, zip lining and ATV tours.

Best Caribbean cruise ports

western caribbean cruise best time go

A single cruise line might call at 20 to 30 different ports in the Caribbean. Although you might think they all look like stock photos of white sand beaches with palm trees and blue skies, each island has its own look, culture and vibe. I've sailed to a large number of those ports and would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. They all have their charms for different reasons.

The following Caribbean cruise ports are generally standouts, no matter your travel style.

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean just offshore from Playa del Carmen and just south of Cancun. It truly offers something for everyone. You can head to the beach, go scuba diving or snorkeling or head to the mainland to see Mayan cultural sites like Tulum and Chichen Itza. Stick around town to find cheap drinks at Senor Frog's or shop for souvenirs.

Cruise ships call at a number of ports in Jamaica: Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Kingston and Falmouth. Many folks spend the day on the beach, often at one of the resorts, but climbing up Dunn's River Falls is a unique experience not to be missed. Cruisers seeking a thrill can find bobsled, zip line, river tubing and ATV tours. And, yes, reggae fans — there is a Bob Marley tour you can take.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is both a popular departure port and port of call on Eastern and Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries. Its Old Town and historic fort overlooking the water are top attractions, but cruisers have the opportunity to visit El Yunque National Forest (the only tropical rainforest on U.S. soil) or head to the beach.

Belize City, Belize

Travelers don't tend to spend much time in Belize City itself, but it's a great jumping-off point for all Belize has to offer. Visit the Altun Ha Mayan ruins, go river tubing and spelunking in caves, zip line through the jungle or go snorkeling or diving along Belize's famous barrier reef (the northern hemisphere's largest).

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

This island is known for its gorgeous Magens Bay beach. However, if you'd rather not share the beach with several ships' worth of cruisers, take the ferry to nearby St. John for the day and find a U.S. national park and a more chill beach experience. Take the kids to the Coral World Ocean Park, your sweetie on a catamaran sail or snorkel trip and your crazy friends on a helmet dive or BOSS underwater scooter adventure.

Known for its lush green twin peaks known as the Pitons, St. Lucia entices travelers with postcard-perfect beaches set against jungle scenery. It even has its own volcano with sulphur springs to visit and all the usual land and sea activities.

Beach, beach and more beach — Aruba is definitely a port to be in, on or near the water. It's one of the southernmost Caribbean islands, found just off the coast of Venezuela, and its location protects it from the summer and fall hurricanes that can hammer the islands to its north and east. Animal lovers might want to check out its ostrich farm — not something you usually find in a Caribbean cruise port.

When to book a Caribbean cruise

western caribbean cruise best time go

The best time to book a Caribbean cruise is clearly right now! Seriously, you can almost always find a deal on a Caribbean cruise if you're flexible enough with your travel dates and cabin types.

If you want to book a popular sail date (such as a Christmas and New Year's Eve sailing) or are looking for a cabin type that's in limited supply (connecting cabins or studio rooms for solo travelers), book as far in advance as you can, at least nine months out if not longer. If you're retired and can drive to a port, you can likely find an inside cabin to book just a few weeks prior to sailing.

The first few months of the year, known as "wave season" in the cruise industry, is a time when cruise lines all offer some kind of booking promotion, and you can often find discounted fares or free booking perks on Caribbean cruises. Many cruise lines also run sales at the end of the summer or during Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and Caribbean sailings are almost always included.

What to bring on a Caribbean cruise

Swimsuits and warm-weather clothing should top your Caribbean cruise packing list, but don't forget the sunscreen. The sun is stronger than you might expect in this part of the world, and you can easily burn during a long day at the beach if you don't apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen. Hats, sunglasses, moisture-wicking athletic clothing and your favorite cover-ups and sundresses are all must-pack items.

I also recommend that all passengers bring a passport on their Caribbean sailing. If you're cruising round-trip from a U.S. port, a passport is not required by law — but it's a good idea to pack one in case of an unexpected medical emergency or mechanical problem that forces you to debark the ship in a foreign country.

Bottom line

Whether you're new to cruising or a hardy sailor, the Caribbean is the perfect place for a cruise vacation. If you've never been, any of the islands will delight. If you've sailed before, there's always some destination you've never visited or an activity you haven't tried.

When winter in your hometown drags on, or the stress of the workweek gets you down, a Caribbean cruise is often just what the doctor ordered to lift the weight of the world from your shoulders and let you escape to a tropical paradise for a few days.

Royal Caribbean Western Caribbean Cruise Tips and Itinerary

' src=

This guide includes Western Caribbean cruise tips and an itinerary based on my recent Royal Caribbean Western Caribbean cruise.

In the cruising world, the Caribbean is broken down into three regions: west, east, and southern. This guide focuses on Western Caribbean itineraries that visit countries such as Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and the Bahamas. They often leave from Florida or south Texas.

I’ve taken dozens of Caribbean cruises, most recently to the Western Caribbean on the Harmony of the Seas and the Oasis of the Seas .

I highly recommend a Caribbean cruise for many different occasions including a family vacation, girl’s trip, romantic getaway, or honeymoon.

Keep reading this guide for Western Caribbean cruise tips, port guides, general cruising advice, and everything you need to successfully plan a Western Caribbean cruise of your own.

Royal Caribbean Western Caribbean Cruise Tips

If you follow this guide for Western Caribbean cruise tips and planning, you are setting yourself up for a perfect vacation. The below tips are other tidbits I’ve learned over the years that can make your trip even more enjoyable.

1. Book a Balcony – Although it’s more expensive, there’s nothing better than waking up with a view of the Caribbean

2. Download the Royal Caribbean App – The app will help you manage reservations, see the schedule, and even read the menu’s are different venues.

3. Do Quick Math to Determine if You Need the Drink Package – It’s much cheaper to pre-purchase the drink package. The breakeven point of the drink package is typically 6 drinks, so determine if it makes sense to purchase. Most cocktails are around $13 on board.

4. Get to Know Crew Members – They are more than just waiters and custodians; many of them are local guides who can provide unique insight about the islands you visit on your cruise.

5. Take Advantage of the Activities – Make sure to check out the nightlife activities on board, from movies under the stars to stand-up comedy shows and karaoke nights! 6. Pack the Essentials – Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, hats and sunglasses for days spent lounging by the pool or exploring nearby beaches. Some essentials such as toiletries or medications are very expensive to buy on board.

The Best Cruise Line for a Western Caribbean Cruise

western caribbean cruise best time go

If you are planning a Western Caribbean Cruise, my #1 tip is to choose the right cruise line. The cruise line you choose will dictate the quality of food, onboard amenities, onboard activities, and excursion options.

While many cruise lines operation in the Caribbean, my favorite is Royal Caribbean , hands down.

Royal Caribbean Overview

Royal Caribbean is knowing for having the largest and most innovative ships. My recent cruise was on the Harmony of the Seas which is the second largest cruise ship in the world.

It has 4 pools, 20 bars, 10+ restaurants, multiple “neighborhoods”, an ice-skating rink, an aqua theater, and many other amazing onboard amenities. With the attention to detail that Royal puts into every ship, you are guaranteed to have a great vacation.

Even better than their “hard product” described above, the service on Royal Caribbean is unparalleled. Even onboard a ship of 4000+ passengers, the dining and stateroom staff memorized our names and preferences.

No request is too much for the accommodating staff. They will do anything from decorating a stateroom for a special occasion to providing off-menu items at the dining room.

In addition to the best ships and service, Royal Caribbean offers amazing itineraries to popular ports with limited sea days. They also have exclusive access to CocoCay, their private island in the Bahamas.

Western Caribbean Cruise Port Guides

Planning a port day.

The below Caribbean cruise port guides are based on the ports I visited on my recent Royal Caribbean western Caribbean cruise . Research is key for visiting cruise ports to maximize your one day at the destination.

When planning a day in port, I consider three things: what I want to eat, if I want to do an excursion, and what activities I cant miss.

For food, pick one lunch spot or snack that you want to try when you’re on shore. For example, a gyro in Greece or key lime pie in Key West.

Next, decide if you want to take a planned excursion or tour, or explore the port on your own. If there is one key activity or site to see in a destination, I typically opt for a tour since it allows you to learn more in a short amount of time and takes away the stress of planning.

If a destination is known for beaches, I’ll opt to explore on my own and spend time relaxing.

Cruise Line Excursion Vs. Local Tour

When deciding between a cruise excursion and an independently run tour, there are a few things to consider. Cruise excursions are typically more expensive, and there are limited options.

However, they are easy to plan, have guaranteed quality, and the ship will wait for you if you are running late.

Independently run tours are often more affordable, have more options, and have a more local presence. However, it can be difficult to coordinate your tour with the ship.

I alternate between the two based on what is offered and what sounds interesting.

Below, I have broken down what to do in each port by my recommended activity and other great options.

Since your time is short, focusing on one key activity is a great way to plan your day without getting overwhelmed.

Popular Western Caribbean Ports

Orlando, florida usa.

western caribbean cruise best time go

Top Activity: Disney World

Other Great Things to Do: Universal Orlando , Kennedy Space Center

Cape Canaveral, outside Orlando, is a very popular embarkation port. My number one western Caribbean cruise tip is to arrive in the embarkation port a day or two early.

This allows you to explore the area, adjust to the time difference, and adds in a buffer for a missed or delayed flight.

The best thing to do in Orlando before a cruise is visiting Disney World . For each day you have before your cruise, plan to visit one park.

My suggestion of the parks to visit in order is Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, then EPCOT. If you only have a half day, EPCOT is my top suggestion.

Some other great things to do in Orlando are Universal Orlando or a tour of the Kennedy Space Center . Universal Orlando is known for the World of Harry Potter, which is well-worth a day trip.

Kennedy Space Center is an educational and inspirational activity, located on Cape Canaveral near the cruise port.

These are both great options if you have extra time in Orlando before or after your cruise.

Cozumel Mexico

western caribbean cruise best time go

Top Activity: Island Tour with Snorkeling, Beaches, Lunch & Tequila Tasting

Other Great Things to Do: Snorkel Boat Tour , ATV Jungle Tour

Cozumel Mexico is an island off the coast of Cancun. It’s a popular tourist destination and cruise port. Since the island is only 40 miles long by 10 miles wide, its doable to see the entire thing in one day.

It’s even more doable because the north part of the island isn’t accessible by land, isolating a perfect 40-mile loop to explore the island.

Since its possible to tour the entire island of Cozumel in one day, the best activity is a combo tour that circles the island and includes some of the best local activities such as snorkeling, the national park, and tequila tasting.

This buggy tour I took during my recent trip is a great way to do all of this! It’s the perfect combination of sightseeing and activities. This tour will allow you to leave Cozumel feeling like you saw everything.

Some other great activities in Cozumel are a boat snorkel tour or this jungle ATV tour . Although you won’t see the whole island like on the above tour, these are great options if you want to focus on one activity.

Cozumel is a popular diving destination, and the snorkeling is also spectacular. The island is covered in greenery, so an ATV tour is a great way to be immersed in nature.

Check out my complete guide to one day in Cozumel for more information.

Roatan Honduras

western caribbean cruise best time go

Top Activity: ATV Island Tour with Zipline, Animal Sanctuary, and Beach

Other Great Things to Do: Beach Horseback Riding , Customizable Private Tour

Roatan is a small island in Honduras. Like Cozumel, Roatan is small enough to see in one day.

The best activity to do in port at Roatan is an ATV island tour that includes a zipline, animal sanctuary, beach, and sightseeing.

This tour was a highlight of my entire Western Caribbean vacation. It’s a great way to see the highlights of Honduras with a bit of adventure mixed in.

If you like the idea of a mixed tour, but the above doesn’t appeal to you, this customizable private tour is great! When you meet the tour guide for the day, you can talk through your priorities for the day, and they will craft a personalized agenda.

If you want to stick to one activity in Roatan, this beach horseback riding tour looks super fun. It will give you extra time to explore the port on your own or head back to the ship for some pool time.

For more information on Roatan Honduras, check out my detailed guide .

Costa Maya Mexico

western caribbean cruise best time go

Top Activity: Chacchoben Ruins

Other Great Things to Do: Port resort day pass

Costa Maya is a port destination on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. It is a very popular cruise port, but there isn’t much other tourism in the area.

The best and most popular activity in Costa Maya is a day trip to the nearby Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. I highly recommend this tour to visit the ruins and learn about the history of the area.

I learned a ton on this tour and enjoyed seeing the ancient Mayan pyramids.

If history isn’t your thing, the next most popular activity in Costa Maya is staying in the port at their resort. You can get a day pass to the resort that includes a large pool, bar, and restaurant.

There isn’t anything local or cultural about this option but its great if you want to relax.

For more details on Costa Maya, check out my quick guide to the port .

CocoCay Bahamas – Royal Caribbean’s Private Island

western caribbean cruise best time go

Top Activity: Thrill Waterpark

Other Great Things to Do: Beach Day, jet skis, kayaking

CocoCay is Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas. Honestly, I expected it to feel gimmicky, overcrowded, and childish. I could not have been more wrong!

While visiting CocoCay isn’t going to be a cultural experience, it offers an incredible day of relaxation that rivals the most luxurious resorts I’ve stayed in.

CocoCay has multiple different areas including three beaches, an exclusive beach club, a large pool, and a waterpark.

The most popular experience on the island is the Thrill Waterpark that features the tallest waterslide in North America. Some other great activities are jet skiing, kayaking, or simply lounging on the beach.

Since CocoCay is Royal’s Island, all excursions and activities must be booked directly. I recommend booking early because they will sell out.

What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

western caribbean cruise best time go

Daytime – During the day on a cruise, you will either be onboard at sea or exploring a port. During sea days, I spend most of my time at the pool, so pack a swimsuit with a cute cover up to wear when heading inside for activities or dining.

In port, shorts and a tank top with sneakers or sandals is great depending on if you are doing adventure activities or casual exploring.

Dinner Attire – Dinner most days is casual attire, but there are some dress code requirements. For the main dining room, men should wear a collared shirt, and women should plan to wear a sundress or nice blouse.

Formal Attire – A 7-night cruise often has two formal nights that fall on the sea days. For formal night, men should wear slacks and a sport coat and women a nice dress with heels.

If this doesn’t sound fun to you, visit a casual dining option on those nights instead and you can wear what you want.

Check out my complete packing guides for more outfit ideas: Men’s Packing Guide & Women’s Packing Guide .

Other Essentials to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

western caribbean cruise best time go

Other Packing Essentials – in addition to clothing, I recommend packing the above essentials for your cruise. Items such as the hat, sunscreen, and water are helpful with the hot sun. The portable charger and waterproof case will keep your phone dry and charged on long port days.

The book will keep you entertained on pool days, and the towel clips will keep your towel from blowing around. The Imodium and bug spray will protect you from bad water and mosquitos in port, respectively.

Reasons to Take a Western Caribbean Cruise

As mentioned above, there are many negative stereotypes about cruising. Trust me, they are all false!

I’ve traveled the world in every way possible from staying in luxury resorts, to road trips, to train travel, I have tried it all. For certain itineraries, such as the Caribbean, cruising is the best way to go.

I have fond childhood memories taking Caribbean cruises with my extended family. These memories involve playing in the kid’s club, eating a huge family dinner with unlimited food, visiting many great ports, and spending time with loved ones.

As an adult, I’ve taken cruises to Europe, Alaska , and the Caribbean. The below list of reasons to take a western Caribbean cruise are why I keep coming back to cruise travel and why you should too.

6 Reasons to Cruise

  • It’s the best way to see multiple locations quickly – on a western Caribbean cruise, you will see 3-5 ports within one week. To see that many ports without a cruise would take at least double the time.
  • Many ports can be very difficult to get to otherwise – on a Caribbean cruise, you can visit remote islands and locations that would take multiple flights to get to. With a cruise, you go to sleep then magically wake up at the next destination.
  • Accommodations can be hard to come by – In addition to being difficult to travel to, some ports lack accommodation options. With a cruise, you have your luxury hotel traveling with you, saving you from trying to find something equally nice on land.
  • Guaranteed great food every night – while sampling local food is a great way to travel, it can be stressful to find safe food in remote destinations. I love coming back to a guaranteed delicious meal on the ship after a day of exploring. And you can always try the local cuisine for lunch at the port!
  • Activities for all ages – For kids, there is a kid and teens club, a splash pad, and waterslides. For adults, there are mixology classes, karaoke, night parties, gambling, and more.
  • You can revisit your favorite ports for longer – one day is often not enough time to experience everything in a destination. Luckily, you can use a cruise to find your favorite ports then revisit them for longer on a standalone vacation.

Between these port guides, cruise line suggestion, and packing tips, planning a Western Caribbean cruise will be a breeze. If you have more questions, comment them below!

You’ve got plenty of choices when it comes to departing on your Western Caribbean cruise. You can depart from:

  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Galveston, Texas
  • Miami, Florida
  • Mobile, Alabama
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida
  • Tampa, Florida

Pre-departure Western Caribbean cruise tips

If you plan to fly to the city where you’ll depart on your Western Caribbean cruise, arrive a day early. This takes the stress out of possible missed flights or airline delays.

Leave your hotel with plenty of time to get to the port, of course. If you are driving, use a travel app to route you around traffic delays if possible.

For the ultimate stress-free trip to the port, consider using Carnival transportation to get there.

What you should consider before leaving on your Western Caribbean cruise

  • Get cash before departure
  • Make sure you have small bills on hand
  • Plan to arrive at the port early if you’d like to be one of the first guests on board
  • Weather at the port can be unpredictable, so bring a jacket, a bottle of water, and sunglasses since you may have to wait outside
  • Consider bringing a lightweight, portable stool if you have difficulty standing for long periods of time

Western Caribbean guide and port highlights

Every port you’ll visit on your Western Caribbean cruise offers its own unique options for tourism and entertainment. The great thing about cruise ships is the amount of control you have over how you spend your time.

At Grand Cayman , nature lovers will see wildlife in its natural habitat. Turtles, stingrays, and more live along Seven Mile Beach. In Georgetown, you can enjoy the laid-back cafes, museums, and shops.

Jungle life awaits in Belize , where rivers flow through lowlands and snorkelers get to see coral gardens along the sand beaches up close. Visitors can go mountain biking, see the Mayan ruins, or just enjoy the beautiful beaches.

In Cozumel, Mexico , scuba divers get to see part of the coral reef that makes up the base of this great island. Swim with dolphins, see the iridescent fish at Chankanaab National Park, or scuba dive the Great Mesoamerican reef.

What you need to know about Western Caribbean itineraries

You can take a couple of days to explore this amazing part of the world with a Carnival Cruise to the Western Caribbean, or spend nine days here. Longer cruises visit more ports, of course.

On Carnival Liberty , you can leave from Port Canaveral in Orlando and spend the night in Nassau. This three-day cruise takes you to the most popular island in The Bahamas. You’ll get to spend a relaxing day on the expansive ship, too.

Leave from Mobile, Alabama for a four-day cruise to Cozumel. With this cruise, you’ll get two luxurious days at sea and a full day to enjoy beautiful Cozumel.

If you’d like to spend even more time exploring the Western Caribbean, check out a six-day tour of the area leaving from Mobile, Alabama. You’ll spend the first two days at sea and then enjoy a full day at Mahogany Bay . Follow it up with a full day in Cozumel and another amazing day at sea before returning home.

What to pack for your Western Caribbean cruise

Packing versatile clothing for your Western Caribbean cruise will help you stay comfortable and get the most out of your trip. The weather may be tropical, but you’ll spend time in climate-controlled areas of the ship as well.

Don’t forget to bring a high-quality sunscreen and lightweight clothing, so you can cover up without getting too hot. The best plan is to make a packing list and stick to it.

There are so many helpful apps for translation, research, and entertainment that you’ll want to pack extra charging cords and a power bank for your smartphone. Download the Carnival Hub app for help with onboard planning.

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

Western Caribbean Cruise Tips: Ports, Attractions, Weather

A western Caribbean cruise is one of the simplest Caribbean cruises to plan and take.

It is simple because there are fewer major ports of call than eastern Caribbean cruises. Cruise planners don’t have to worry as much about which ports are the best ones to visit.

For some people, it also is less expensive if they are able to start their cruise from one of the convenient Gulf Coast ports of the United States.

Even better, the weather makes it easier for cruisers to decide when to go. The region has distinct dry and rainy seasons. Visits leap during the dry season and plunge in the rainy season.

5 Top Western Caribbean Cruise Tips

Ports of call.

Anyone who is going on a western Caribbean cruise for the first time may find it helpful to divide the ports of call into three groups.

The first group consists of four islands that cruise ships visit often: Grand Cayman , Jamaica , Cozumel and Roatan .

Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Jamaica are among the most popular islands in the Caribbean, in part because of their size, location and unique attractions. Roatan off the coast of Honduras is smaller and offers fewer reasons to visit. But like the others, it has good beaches and other water activities. The snorkeling is especially good.

The second group of destinations is made up of ports on large Central America land masses rather than islands. They are Belize, Costa Rica and Panama. Unlike the islands, they are known for interior land activities and not for their beaches—if they have any beaches at all near their cruise ports.

The third group consists of two smaller ports that don’t fit easily into either of the above two groups. One is Mexico’s Costa Maya, a privately owned village that is designed for cruise visitors. The other is Santo Tomás de Castilla, which is mostly a commercial port on the coast of Guatemala. It receives only a handful of cruise ships each month.

Many western Caribbean cruises include destinations from both of the first two groups. Seven-day cruises mostly visit the first group and occasionally one or two destinations in the second group.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

The western Caribbean has several famous attractions that cost money to visit. In my opinion, they are memorable cruise excursions that are worth the cost, especially for families. They are:

But of course the Caribbean also is famous for its white sand beaches. The islands in the western Caribbean are no exception.

Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is one of the best-known beaches in the Caribbean.

Cozumel has many beaches that also have the benefit of good snorkeling because of the surrounding coral reefs.

Jamaica also is famous for its beaches, but Montego Bay is a better choice than Falmouth.

Roatan has a small but nice beach at the private Mahogany Bay cruise port, owned by Carnival Cruise Lines. Cruisers who visit the Coxen Hole cruise port usually have to take an excursion bus to the West End and other beach locations.

The Mexico and Central America ports usually offer excursions to major Mayan ruins.

Otherwise, all of the destinations except for Santo Tomás de Castilla cater heavily to tourists with plenty of shopping, restaurants and standard recreational activities.

Western Caribbean Cruise Weather

The western Caribbean has a dry season that begins in January and goes through April. March is espcially popular because of warmer weather and spring break from schools.

The rainy season begins in a small way in June, gets steadily worse with rain and goes until November. September and October are the worst times to take a western Caribbean cruise.

Some destinations such as Cozumel on average get as much as 10 inches of rain during those months. They get only one to two inches a month during the dry season.

The rainy season is part of the Caribbean hurricane season, which officially begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. A tropical storm or hurricane rarely hits a western Caribbean port directly, but they do bring plenty of rain to the entire region.

For these reasons, cruise and resort visits skyrocket during the dry season of January through April. It’s also a popular time because northern visitors are escaping from cold winters.

May and December are transition months with modest amounts of rain.

Still, the higher risk of rain doesn’t stop cruise ships from visiting the western Caribbean during the rainy season. Families will visit the region during summer breaks from school. Budget-conscious cruisers will take advantage of discounts during the season if demand drops off.

Best Time to Cruise to the Caribbean

Last updated: December 4th, 2023

  • Find a Cruise

A Caribbean cruise vacation conjures up images of swaying palm trees, sun-warmed beaches, aqua waves, and frosty tropical drinks. These pristine islands are one of the most traveled cruise destinations for first-time and seasoned cruisers alike, and knowing the best time to cruise to the Caribbean is crucial to experiencing those enticing visuals.

Scenic landscape of San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Caribbean is a cruiser’s dream vacation in every season. The key is knowing which area to cruise to and when to get full enjoyment out of every moment of your cruise vacation. The best time to cruise the Caribbean for you can depend on your schedule, whether school or work, your travel budget, and your travel desires.

What is the best month to cruise the Caribbean?

Couple walking on a beach in San Juan, Mexico

You can sail to the Caribbean year-round, from January to December. Cruises from Florida to the Caribbean depart from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa, or you can sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If you’re looking for optimum weather and reduced fares, one of the best months to cruise to the Caribbean is May , the beginning of shoulder season. Shoulder season is that time just before and just after peak or high season, from December to April.

During this time, you can find some terrific offers on longer Caribbean cruises of 10 to 12 days to the Southern Caribbean and for shorter cruises of 5 to 7 days to the Bahamas or Mexico as peak season has just ended and the summer vacation travel rush hasn’t kicked in yet.

White sand beach and mayan ruins in Tulum, Mexico

One reason May is one of the best times to visit the Caribbean on a cruise is that the weather is still near perfect, particularly in the Southern Caribbean islands , with lots of sunny days and balmy evenings perfect for a sunset catamaran cruise or a moonlit stroll on a ship’s deck.

May weather on Mexico’s east coast, where the island of Cozumel sits, is also still hot and dry with temperatures in the 80s and over 11 hours of sunlight daily. Sunbathe on pristine white-sand beaches or get active with watersports like jet skiing and parasailing over the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea.

Person swimming with hawksbill turtle

Scuba diving, reef snorkeling, splashing around with dolphins, and deep-sea fishing for marlin, mahi-mahi, and sailfish are more ways to enjoy Mexico’s beautiful weather, clear blue waters, and vibrant underwater marine life.

October , the later part of shoulder season, is also one of the best months to cruise if you’re looking for special offers. You might also find special offers for packages and amenities, such as drink packages and onboard credit.

December through April is the peak season for Caribbean cruising. During this time, you’ll experience the best weather and some of the most entertaining holidays and festivals.

If you have a sudden impulse to travel, enjoy a flexible schedule or no schedule at all, and are not picky about stateroom selection, you might be able to snap up a last-minute offer.

If you’re looking to book your vacation at a specific time of year, here are some of the highlights of traveling to the Caribbean during different seasons.

Winter cruises to the Caribbean

Cruising to the warm, sunny Caribbean during the winter months, when the weather up north can be cold, gray, and snowy, is a terrific way to beat the winter blues.

Bathsheba Beach, Barbados

During the months of January through March, you’ll find idyllic tropical weather with temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s and low humidity. January also marks the beginning of the Caribbean dry season, which greatly minimizes the chance of rain during your cruise vacation.

Another perk of winter cruises (outside of December) is that the high-peak holiday cruise season has just wrapped up. Cruises sailing during early January and February dates are often offered at a great price point since most travelers have headed back to work.

Spring cruises to the Caribbean

During the months of March and April, the best beaches in the Caribbean attract a rush of spring breakers and families looking to take advantage of school breaks.

snorkeling in the Caribbean

If you’re thinking of taking a Caribbean cruise during the spring, we recommend booking your vacation as early as possible, since prices tend to go up and cruise ships often sell out during this popular travel season.

Of course, it’s no surprise why travelers flock to the Caribbean during the early spring months. The weather is often blissful, with temperatures fluctuating between the mid-70s to low-90s. Plus, March and April are still well within the dry season, so you won’t have to worry about rain or storms during your trip down south.

Summer cruises to the Caribbean

Looking for an antidote to a too-crowded summer vacation? A summer cruise to the Caribbean may be just the ticket. When you cruise the Caribbean during June, July, and August, you’ll enjoy less crowded beaches and restaurants.

Carenage Inlet Grenada

The Caribbean is one of the most fun places to go in the summer with your family since the kids are out of school. While the weather can get quite hot and humid during this time of the year, with some islands reaching 90 degrees on average in August, temperatures tend to cool down in the evenings, when they can hit a comfortable range within the low-70s.

During the summer, the chance of rain also increases, so make sure to bring a rain jacket or poncho in case you happen to get caught under some showers. Don’t forget the bug spray either, as high humidity and rain typically mean there are more mosquitoes, too.

Fall cruises to the Caribbean

Hurricane season takes off in September and lasts until early November. If you’re looking for a great special offer on a cruise, look for cruises during this time period.

beach in Curaçao

The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) are popular destinations with cruise vacationers during the fall, especially during the later part of hurricane season, since they’re outside of the Caribbean hurricane zone.

If you don’t mind a little bit of unpredictability and tropical rain, the early fall season is also one of the best times to visit the rest of the Caribbean because of the cooler but still warm weather, small crowds, and low fares.

Come prepared with a waterproof jacket, in case you do encounter some showers, and don’t forget to pack anti-nausea aids or medication to prevent seasickness in case the weather makes sailing choppier than usual.

Holiday cruises to the Caribbean

Starting in late November, peak season in the Caribbean takes off again. Holiday cruises fill up quickly, so it’s wise to book as early as possible to get the stateroom, dining time, specialty dining reservations, and shore excursions you want.

People raising glasses for the new year

Even though December is one of the most popular months to travel to the Caribbean, there are still opportunities to find special offers during the first two weeks of the month before the holiday vacation period begins and when sailings may be offered at discounted prices.

Clear blue waters and mountains of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

After hurricane season ends in early November, you can expect ideal weather at all Caribbean cruise ports, with average temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s during the day, low humidity, and little chance of rain.

One of the highlights of taking a cruise to the Caribbean during the holidays is celebrating with Celebrity Cruises on board. On Thanksgiving cruises from Florida , you’ll get a traditional feast with all the trimmings.

On Christmas cruises, expect holiday decorations, carolers, and visits from Santa. You’ll find Easter egg hunts and other fun activities for the whole family during spring holiday sailings. Sail with us on New Year’s Eve and party on to midnight and beyond with a sensational champagne celebration.

When is the best time to cruise to the Eastern Caribbean?

Beautiful beach with waves crashing on rocks

Whether you’re a sun worshipper who wants to kick back on the powdery white sand beaches of each Caribbean port, passionate about scuba diving or snorkeling, or interested in delving into the history and culture of the places you’ll visit, the weather throughout the Eastern Caribbean during peak season is ideal for all activities.

Beautiful beach and skyline of Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Book a June cruise to the Eastern Caribbean for a combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall. Hurricane season begins June 1st but doesn’t usually ramp up until mid-August, so you’ll usually have calm Atlantic and Caribbean seas through June.

Cruise Eastern Caribbean itineraries in July, August , and September, the low season, and you’re likely to find discounted fares due to fine summer weather in most of the Western world, high season for Mediterranean cruises, and the unpredictability of hurricane season. With school out for the summer, and a slower pace in general, families are increasingly taking advantage of this time to travel together.

Couple snorkeling

Island weather tends to be more humid during these months, with temperatures still in the 70s and 80s range, and generally rainier. Plan on early morning beach time, fun trips to water parks, swimming with dolphins or stingrays, snorkeling, diving, and other water sports.

This may be the perfect season for you if you prefer not only less crowded Caribbean islands, but possibly a less crowded onboard cruise experience as well.

When is the best time to cruise to the Southern Caribbean?

People standing on a wooden balcony looking at greenery

Book an early shoulder season cruise in May to take advantage of the best weather with fewer crowds. Explore Fort Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Willemstad, Curacao, then shop the vibrant open-air markets and sample the Dutch take on waffles.

Snorkel or scuba on Kralendijk, Bonaire, one of the world’s most beautiful diving spots that’s equally famous for its delightful pastel houses of pink, green and orange.

The best thing about traveling to the Caribbean is that whatever time or season you choose to cruise, there’s a Celebrity Cruises ship and its crew ready to treat you to a luxury cruise experience as you travel to pristine island destinations.

Best Time for a Caribbean Cruise

Welcome to the Caribbean. Brilliant blue seas, powdery sands, and shimmering reefs are year-round delights and so the best time of year for a Caribbean cruise is… anytime . Consider what’s important to you. Is it the weather, the crowds or the price?

If you want to avoid the hurricane season, aim for the dry season from December to April. However, if you prefer more budget-friendly options and don't mind some rain, you can consider cruising during the shoulder seasons. The best time for a Caribbean cruise can also vary depending on the specific region you plan to visit within the Caribbean.

Our Caribbean cruises  offer plenty of options, from three-day and week-long voyages to holiday cruises and ambitious expeditions. And we offer cruise deals year-round, so rest assured that you can find great value at any time.

When is the Best Month to Cruise the Caribbean?

In general, mid-December through mid-March is the best time of year, weather-wise .

The Caribbean dry season is mid-December through mid-March and the high tourist season is from mid-December to mid-April. Caribbean weather is at its peak, and many are trying to escape brrr-utal winters. Expect little rainfall and average lows in the 70s, highs in the 80s.

Remember, Caribbean weather varies by region.  Aruba  is outside of the hurricane belt and doesn’t have a monsoon season.  The best time to cruise the Western and Southern Caribbean is winter, as the waters are warm, and the temps are comfortable. The Western Caribbean’s rainy season starts in May. Spring is a great time to take an  Eastern Caribbean cruise  as the cooler waters near the Bahamas heat up.

What is the Best Time to Avoid Crowds?

Late spring or fall, May or October/November . The off-season, also known as the hurricane season, in the Caribbean typically occurs from June to November. This period is also associated with higher levels of rainfall and humidity. While not all days are rainy, you can expect more frequent and intense rain showers, particularly in the afternoons.

If you want to sidestep the hordes of sunscreen-slathered vacationers that descend on the islands each year, consider the shoulder season in late spring or fall, May or late October-November. You can bask in the warm temps and sunshine and won’t have to duke it out for a beach lounger. If you want a romantic getaway in relative quiet, plan your cruise for when school is in session to avoid noisy kiddos and raucous spring breakers. Every one of our Caribbean cruises stops into  Half Moon Cay , our top-rate private island, so you will enjoy some seclusion no matter when you go. Rent a private cabana or get a massage to unwind in tranquility.

That said, if you are planning a family cruise, our  Club Hal youth activities program  can keep the kiddos entertained so parents can relax.

  • Low Rainfall: The winter and early spring months are relatively dry in the Bahamas, which means you're less likely to encounter rain or storms during your cruise. This is essential for enjoying outdoor excursions and water sports.
  • Clear Waters: The waters around the Bahamas are crystal clear during this time, making it excellent for snorkeling, scuba diving, and other water-based activities. The visibility is typically at its best.

When is the Cheapest Time to Cruise the Caribbean?

Late summer and fall, a.k.a. hurricane season . The Caribbean weather is mid-to-upper 80s and June is one of the wettest months in the islands. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. In general, September and October are considered the worst months to cruise the Caribbean, as it is peak Hurricane Season.

September is often the least expensive month for Caribbean travel and early October can offer budget-friendly options for travelers willing to take the risk associated with the tail end of the hurricane season. November is a transitional month as the Caribbean exits hurricane season, and prices may start to rise, but early November can still offer some lower rates.

However, keep in mind that some Southern Caribbean cruise destinations , such as Bonaire, Aruba and Barbados are rarely threatened by hurricanes as these islands are closer to the equator.

If you're looking for affordability without the hurricane risk, late April and early May can be a good choice. This period marks the transition from the high season to the off-peak season, and you may find deals before the summer crowds arrive.

Before booking a trip during the cheapest months, it's essential to research the specific destination's weather patterns, and be prepared for potential itinerary adjustments. Traveling during the shoulder seasons can offer a balance between affordability and favorable weather conditions.

eastern caribbean vs western cruise

Contents Show

Choosing between an Eastern vs. Western Caribbean cruise is a common question for cruisers looking for warm weather during the winter months.

St. Thomas Eastern Caribbean Island

The decision involves weighing various factors and preferences to determine which side of the Caribbean best suits your interests.

I’ll share key elements in this article to help you choose the right Caribbean cruise.

Geographical Overview

caribbean island map

Many travelers think Caribbean destinations are all the same, but this is not the case when looking at the Eastern vs. Western Caribbean .

Islands in the Eastern Caribbean tend to be smaller and more mountainous than those in the west. You will often find dense rainforests with volcanic terrain and stunning beaches in the Eastern Caribbean. Additionally, the east water is usually calmer and ideal for water sports.

Grand Cayman Island Western Caribbean

The west side of the Caribbean offers a more wide-ranging experience with larger landmasses and diverse landscapes, from the tropical rainforests in Honduras to the arid coastal areas in Mexico.

Even the underwater world is different within the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The west is a popular hotspot for scuba diving with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef along the coast of Belize and Mexico.

At the same time, the east offers some of the world’s most popular beaches, from Playa Flamenco in San Juan to Magens Bay in St. Thomas .

Itineraries and ports

Amber Cove Eastern Caribbean

When comparing Eastern vs. Western Caribbean ports , you will find that the East is known for its lush landscapes, beautiful beaches, and historic sites.

At the same time, the West is popular for travelers looking to explore the underwater world with world-class snorkeling and scuba diving.

The Eastern Caribbean includes ports like:

  • St. Thomas, USVI
  • Tortola, BVI
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Amber Cove, Dominican Republic
  • Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos
  • St. Maarten

Western Caribbean includes ports like:

  • Cozumel, Mexico
  • Costa Maya , Mexico
  • Roatan, Honduras
  • Belize City, Belize
  • Georgetown, Cayman Islands
  • Various ports in Jamaica

St. Thomas Eastern Caribbean

When comparing Western vs. Eastern itineraries , the West takes you through pristine natural scenery, with the opportunity to hike through Mayan ruins and jump into deep blue cenotes in Tulum, Mexico or swim with the stingrays in Grand Cayman.

In the east, you may find yourself hiking to waterfalls in El Yunque National Park in Puerto Rico or relaxing at Trunk Bay in St. John.

Embarkation ports

Popular departure ports for Eastern Caribbean cruises include Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and longer-length voyages from New York.

When cruising to the western side of the Caribbean , ships will most likely leave from Miami, Tampa, or Fort Lauderdale in Florida or New Orleans and Galveston in the Gulf of Mexico.

Amber Cove Eastern Caribbean

When comparing cruise length vs. western routes, you can generally find shorter cruise options to the east, starting at only four or five nights (Grand Turk), while the shortest cruise you can take to the west is four nights (Cozumel).

Longer cruises tend to showcase the Eastern side of the Caribbean , with many options ranging from 9-12 nights, while most western Caribbean cruises are more in the week-long variety.  Take this into consideration while planning your cruise .

Trunk Bay St. John

When looking at eastern vs. western Caribbean cruises, you will find that the east offers more picture-perfect beaches typically associated with Caribbean cruising.

Eastern Caribbean

Destinations like St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and The Bahamas deliver what guests want in a tropical getaway – stunning white sand beaches, palm trees, and clear water.

These destinations are also top snorkeling and diving spots where you can explore vibrant coral reefs and old shipwrecks in places like the U.S Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Cozumel Caribbean Island Shop

You may find yourself exploring many historical sites and cultural experiences when on the Eastern side of the Caribbean.

At the same time, landside, the destinations are dotted with old forts, museums, and vibrant local markets. The east is also perfect for island hopping, with the opportunity to visit multiple islands and experience diverse cultures on a single voyage.

Western Caribbean

On the other hand, Western Caribbean cruises feature ports like Cozumel, Belize, and Honduras, well known for their adventurous activities and adrenaline-filled sports, attracting thrill-seekers worldwide.

Here, you can take a tube ride through caves, go ziplining, or engage in watersports like snorkeling in the Grand Cayman or swimming with dolphins in Roatan. Of course, if all you want to do is relax on the sand with a book and a cocktail, that’s fine, too.

Cozumel Caribbean White Sand

However, western Caribbean beaches aren’t as famous for their idyllic beachside locales as their Eastern Caribbean counterparts.

One plus of the western Caribbean is the rich cultural side, where you can soak up the sun as you learn about the Mayan culture and the rich history of Mexico by visiting local markets and sampling local street food.

Cozumel Western Caribbean Island

Shopping experiences for cruise passengers in the Eastern and Western Caribbean ports offer different options.

Eastern Caribbean ports, such as St. Thomas and St. Maarten, are famous for high ticket shops, including jewelry, watches, and designer brands, often at duty-free prices. These ports are also known for local crafts and unique souvenirs.

St. John Eastern Caribbean

On the other hand, Western Caribbean stops, such as Cozumel and Grand Cayman, offer a more diverse shopping scene, focusing on local artisanal products like handmade crafts, textiles, and local spirits. Western ports also have a variety of outdoor markets, where visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant local culture and find unique, region-specific items.

However, both regions cater well to tourists, ensuring a broad range of options from high-end boutiques to local market stalls.

Best Time to Go

Grand Turk White Sand Beach

The best time to go depends on your weather preferences and tolerance for crowds.

Generally, the peak season for both regions is between December and April, offering warm and dry weather, perfect for beach activities and exploring ports. However, this period also sees higher prices and more crowded ships and destinations.

If you prefer fewer crowds and potential deals, the late spring and early fall months can be ideal, but it’s important to note that this coincides with the hurricane season (June to November), which may bring unpredictable weather. Traveling during this off-peak season requires flexibility and careful monitoring of weather forecasts.

hurricane sign carnival cruise line

Hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, affects the entire Caribbean – and the East and Gulf Coasts –  so you should be mindful when booking a cruise.

Canceling a cruise outright is uncommon since it’s also in the financial interest of cruise lines to operate these voyages. If you’re planning a Caribbean cruise in the summer or fall, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather, have backup plans in case of unfavorable conditions, and consider buying travel insurance .

The western Caribbean is typically hotter and more humid than the east, but not so much. Destinations along the west, like Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Belize, tend to be warmer and more humid during summer, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the same time, the Eastern side is usually a bit cooler, averaging around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Examples of Caribbean Sailings

Carnival Celebration Miami

No matter which Caribbean cruise lines you choose, you will find numerous options for the east and west of the Caribbean. Many different cruise lines do both itineraries. Here are a few examples:

Disney Cruise Line sailings

For this example, let’s use Disney Cruise Line’s Caribbean itineraries for Eastern vs. Western cruises.

You’ll find that Disney ships visit ports like Costa Maya, Progreso, and Cozumel in Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Falmouth, Jamaica, on their western Caribbean routes.

While Eastern Caribbean sailings typically include destinations such as Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.

Royal Caribbean sailings

As for other cruise lines, Royal Caribbean alone has 287 itineraries on the Eastern Caribbean and 104 from along the western side.

Carnival Cruise Ship Sails

Carnival Cruise Line voyages

Carnival Cruise Line’s itineraries are very similar to other operators, with Eastern itineraries typically including stops at ports such as San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, and the Bahamas, with western itineraries featuring ports such as Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Belize.

Norwegian Cruise Line voyages

As for itinerary length, Norwegian Cruise Line’s voyages western itineraries usually run from 5-7 days, while the Eastern route has itineraries from 5-10 days.

So, as you can see, the Eastern and Western itineraries are consistent among cruise operators, but duration can vary among the lines.

Safety in ports

man overboard life ring

Like on any vacation – a seagoing adventure or on land – you should always be mindful of your surroundings and implement safety measures when traveling to the Eastern or Western Caribbean.

While it is highly unlikely that you will encounter any crime or danger, particularly if you stay within the tourist areas or take an organized excursion through the cruise line, precautions should always be taken when traveling.

Cozumel Western Caribbean Tourist Spot

When comparing cruise safety between the western Caribbean vs. Eastern Caribbean, you will find that there are safer destinations and destinations with higher crime rates on both sides.

Some of the safest Caribbean islands include the Cayman Islands in the west, Montserrat in the east, and the British Virgin Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Islands with higher crime rates include Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago in the western Caribbean. While these islands have higher crime rates, most issues are internal and unrelated to tourists or resort areas.

A focus on beaches

Cozumel Beach White Sand Beach

Regardless of what side of the Caribbean you visit, you will find gorgeous, white-sand beaches – after all, isn’t that what a Caribbean cruise is all about? Choosing which side has better beaches is hard, but the Eastern Caribbean might have a slight nod as it features some of the world’s most beautiful and famous beaches.

Grand Turk Caribbean Beach

From Trunk Bay in St. John to Dickenson Bay in Antigua, the eastern Caribbean boasts picturesque white-sand beaches and see-to-the-bottom turquoise waters lined with vibrant palm trees. The western Caribbean is picture-perfect with its white beaches and blue waters.

Amber Cove Eastern Caribbean

Popular beach spots along the west include the Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman and Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Eastern Caribbean wins by a thread regarding the best beaches, but you can’t go wrong with either side.

Seasonal Differences in the Caribbean

Caribbean Island Beach Resort

Seasonal considerations play a significant role when planning a Caribbean cruise, but the different seasons don’t vary too much between the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Winter and Spring

Summer and fall.

While not all parts of the Eastern and Western Caribbean are affected equally by hurricanes, both sides run the risk during these months. The Eastern side of the Caribbean typically sees a higher risk of hurricanes, but both east and west are at risk of hurricanes and tropical storms .

Amber Cove Eastern vs. western Caribbean cruise

Choosing between an Eastern and Western Caribbean cruise is a great dilemma – in the end, you can’t go wrong visiting either side of this amazing cruising region, right? – but deciding based on your specific vacation preferences is important.

What is the best month to take a cruise? We broke it down by region.

western caribbean cruise best time go

Certain times of year may seem like no-brainers for travel, like spring break or summer vacation.

But the best times to take a cruise can vary depending on where you’re going.

Mike Harris, director of sales at online travel agency The Cruise Web , said there are “a lot of factors that go into any vacation, but especially one where you're traveling overseas, or if you're going to a destination that does have varying weather patterns.”

Other aspects like wildlife activity and pricing can also change throughout the year. Some places even have set seasons when cruise ships visit. We break down the best times to visit some of the most popular cruise destinations below.

When is the best time to take an Alaska cruise?

The Alaska cruise season runs from May through September, but the optimal window depends on your priorities, according to Harris.

“So, if you really wanted to see wildlife, which is a big reason why people want to go to Alaska, usually July is going to be the best for that,” he said. “It's when the bears are really active.”

Late June and August can also make for good wildlife viewing, said Deborah Banks, a travel adviser and franchise owner at Cruise Planners with her husband Isaiah.

May and September feature lower prices and colder temperatures, in the 50 to 60-degree range compared to the mid-60s to low 70s Harris estimated (though it can vary depending on where in Alaska you are). September is also “fantastic” for viewing fall foliage. “(There’s) colder weather, but you're getting some really cool, unique scenery later in the year too,” he said.

Banks warned that there can be drawbacks to going on the early or late side. “(The) early season may see some icy conditions, and late season may increase the chance of rougher seas and less predictable weather,” she said in an email. Some tourist services may not be fully operational.

When is the best time to take a Caribbean cruise?

While the Caribbean is a year-round cruise destination , December through April is the best time to go, according to Banks. “This is the dry season with calmer seas and more comfortable weather,” she said.

Harris echoed that, noting that winter is a particularly good time to take those sailings. “Chances are where you're coming from, it's very cold, so it's a good change of temperature,” he said.

The Caribbean is also popular with families, so going outside of the summer months can mean more availability and better fares – though ships are likely to be crowded during other school holidays like spring and winter breaks.

Banks also recommended avoiding hurricane season, which runs from June through November.

But operators can monitor for bad weather in advance, and ships have stabilizers that reduce the impact of rough waters, Harris noted. And unlike resorts on land, ships can reroute as needed. “The nice thing about cruising is that they can sail somewhere else,” he said.

When is the best time to take a Mediterranean cruise?

Banks said May through September offers “warm weather, calm seas, and plenty of sunshine.” That said, some of those months may not be your best bet if you don’t like the heat.

“It can definitely be super hot,” Harris said. “Like, if you go to Venice in July, you're gonna be sweating.” If you’re looking for milder temperatures, consider visiting as early as April or in October after fall rolls around.

But if you have your heart set on a voyage outside those months, don’t worry: ships cruise the Mediterranean the whole year. The region may see less predictable weather and rougher seas from November through March, but that “can vary by exact location,” Banks added.

Cruise line guide: From family trips to adventure travel

When is the best time to take an Antarctica cruise?

Antarctica is an increasingly popular destination , but cruise ships only visit for about half the year.

The destination’s cruise season runs from October or November through March, encompassing its summer.

Even then, the weather can be highly unpredictable and the environment changes throughout the season. Travelers have a better shot at seeing penguin chicks starting in December.

“Outside of these months, the region is largely inaccessible to cruise ships because of extreme cold and ice buildup,” Banks said.

Western Caribbean cruises -- calling on ports like Cozumel or Progreso in Mexico or Falmouth, Jamaica --  are available year-round with the winter months being the busiest. Great deals and lighter crowds can be found in the summer months, but hurricanes can be a serious threat from May through October.

Most cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, Princess , Disney, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line and Viking Ocean Cruises all feature Western Caribbean itineraries. Luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea also frequent the region.

What are some things to do in the Western Caribbean?

Do you need a passport to take a cruise to the western caribbean.

U.S. citizens do not need a passport if their cruise starts and ends in the same U.S. port (like Galveston), but it is highly recommended to still travel with one in case of emergency.

What should I pack for a cruise to the Western Caribbean?

Lightweight, breathable clothing, beachwear and sun protection are musts. If you're planning on more active excursions, be sure to pack sturdy, comfortable shoes as well. Bug repellant might also be a good idea, especially in the summer.

Royal Caribbean explores every corner of the region, with eastern, western and southern Caribbean itineraries on its fun-loving ships. Its fleet will soon include the 5,610-passenger Icon of the Seas, which will pip Wonder of the Seas as the world’s largest cruise ship when it starts exploring Caribbean shores on sailings from Miami. The excitement continues on dry land with Perfect Day at CocoCay. This is Royal Caribbean’s private Bahamian island, where you’ll find Thrill Waterpark, with the region’s biggest wave pool and tallest slide in North America.

9. MSC Cruises

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a standout private island visited by a number of the line’s vessels, including the new 5,877-passenger flagship MSC Seascape, which has been designed for warm climates with an expansive outside deck space. In 2015 the island, 65 miles off Miami, was an abandoned sand mine strewn with scrap metal. A four-year, £134 million regeneration project saw MSC Cruises transform it into an eco-friendly destination for Caribbean passengers, who can spend a day there or stay overnight on the island, where attractions include a lively Bahamian Junkanoo parade and an LED light show from the lighthouse. Well known for a family-friendly welcome, MSC Seascape has one of the biggest kids’ clubs in the fleet and the swashbuckling Pirate’s Cove waterpark.

10. Oceania Cruises

Oceania’s Caribbean cruises sail out of Miami and include less-travelled islands such as Saint Vincent, Bonaire, Guadeloupe and Dominica . The line is well known for its cuisine and this is reflected in a number of food-themed shore excursions. You can tour Grenada’s fragrant spice estates or join one of the chefs to visit markets bursting with tropical fruit and discover how to make a perfect rum punch. Other fun excursions include taking the soaring Skyride to Paradise Point, 213m (700ft) above the town of Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas.

Test Kitchen is one of the dining choices aboard Virgin ships (Virgin Voyages)

11. Virgin Voyages

Entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson turned traditional cruising on its head when he launched the head-turning Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady , which will be joined in May 2023 by the identical Resilient Lady. The adult-only ships have Insta-friendly backdrops, hammocks on the balcony, sexy shows, a tattoo parlour, and new takes on dining including the lab-like Test Kitchen and veggie-friendly Razzle Dazzle. Four- to seven-night itineraries out of Miami see the ships head to Bimini for lazy days in the sun and late-night dance parties at the Beach Club, which is a hip enclave for Virgin passengers — who are known as sailors.

12. Regent Seven Sea Cruises

An exhilarating sky ride above St Martin is just one of the many shore tours to choose from with this luxury line, with a selection of included excursions at every port. A chairlift transports visitors to reach the Crow’s Nest lookout point perched on Sentry Hill, one of the island’s tallest peaks. Foodies will want to check out a hands-on cookery class with leading Antiguan chef Nicole Arthurton Dennis. Regent Seven Seas has an extensive Caribbean programme which covers less visited islands such as Martinique and Guadeloupe, along with sailings featuring Panama Canal transits.

13. Disney Cruise Lines

Disney Wish has sprinkled some magical stardust at sea since it joined the four other ships in the fleet in 2022. It also raised the curtain on the first Disney attraction at sea: a water experience that twists around the ship before splashing down into a lazy river. Ships sail to the Caribbean from Galveston, New Orleans, San Juan, Miami and Port Canaveral, making it easy for families — and the young at heart — to add a fun-filled cruise to a US holiday. Look out for the Aladdin-themed Disney Treasure launching in 2024.

Frenchman’s Cay on Tortola, a Seabourn destination (Alamy)

14. Seabourn

Luxury line Seabourn explores the “uncommon Caribbean” with its fleet of small ships, carrying 264 to 600 passengers, which can reach harbours inaccessible to larger vessels. Tenders are used to reach destinations such as the yacht haven of Frenchman’s Cay on Tortola, once an infamous haunt for pirates. Shore excursions are equally intimate. Head out to a local market with one of the chefs or get expert tips from the crew on the best snorkelling beaches; treats include a beach barbecue served in the warm, waist-deep surf.

15. Celebrity Cruises

Choose the Caribbean cruise that’s just right for you with Celebrity’s wide-ranging programme of sailings that range from three and four-night escapes to 12-night island-hopping itineraries. Popular five-night western Caribbean itineraries sail from Miami to Mexico and a featured stop is Costa Maya where the beautiful beach with the Banco Chinchorro coral reef is a magnet for divers and snorkellers, while history buffs can explore the lesser-known Mayan ruins Chacchoben and Kohunlich. A standout Celebrity venue is the “magic carpet”, a cantilevered bar and restaurant that moves up and down the outside of the vessel and can be found on the newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, in the Caribbean.

16. Carnival Cruise Line

Cruise the entire length and breadth of the region with family-friendly Carnival, which sails year-round to the southern, eastern and western Caribbean. The line also has a wide range of departure points including the islands of Puerto Rico and Barbados and mainland ports in Florida , which are ideal for linking to a land-based stay in the Sunshine State. The bright and colourful Carnival Celebration, Carnival’s newest ship — which features the BOLT rollercoaster — sails out of Miami to all parts of the Caribbean. Carnival Jubilee joins the fleet later in 2023 and will sail to the Caribbean from Galveston, Texas.

17. Explora Journeys

The brand new line Explora Journeys, launching in July 2023 with the 922-passenger Explora I, marks the MSC Group’s move into the luxury cruise sector; albeit that’s not a word you’ll hear. The firm likens the brand to a top hotel that just happens to be at sea and sailings are called ocean journeys; cabins — each one with a balcony — are homes at sea; and shore excursions are destination experiences. The ship will sail in the Caribbean out of Miami, Bridgetown and San Juan to islands such as St Kitts, with the chance to take a cookery class, try your hand at making batik fabric or peer into a volcanic crater.

When is the best time to cruise the Caribbean?

With perfect timing for sun-starved Brits, the dry season runs from mid-December to mid-April and temperatures average 22C to 31C. Unsurprisingly, this is the most popular time to visit. The islands are quieter, and prices are cheaper, during the June to August wet season. Despite the name, showers are brief and temperatures are balmy. The hurricane season runs from June until November, peaking in July and August when there are bargains to be had. Ships steer clear of the storms but sometimes itineraries change.

What are the best things to do in the Caribbean?

Calm, clear waters make the Caribbean a top spot for diving, with lines offering beginners’ lessons and sessions for experienced divers, and you can snorkel off the beach for close-up views of the underwater wonderland. Get an authentic taste of the islands by visiting a chocolate factory, rum distillery or sugar plantation and check out colourful markets for crafts, spices and handmade souvenirs. Then simply sit back on deck with your favourite cocktail and watch some of the most spectacular sunsets at sea.

What should I pack for a cruise to the Caribbean?

Loose, lightweight clothes made from cotton or natural fibres are best for excursions. Trainers or comfortable sandals are a must, along with flip-flops and water shoes. Pack several pieces of swimwear so one set is always dry, plus a cover-up for the beach or to walk on deck. Don’t forget sunglasses, a folding sunhat and reef-friendly sunscreen. A rash vest and waterproof phone or camera case are good for water sports. Evening clothes are usually informal, but check your line’s dress code.

12 Best Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships For Adults

  • Royal Caribbean offers a variety of cruise ships designed for adults, with amenities, entertainment, and activities tailored to their preferences.
  • The newest addition to Royal Caribbean's fleet, Icon of the Seas, offers a range of exciting features, such as a swim-up bar and suspended infinity pool, making it a great choice for adult cruisers.
  • The Radiance Class ships, including Serenade of the Seas, provide a more adult-focused experience, with quieter onboard entertainment and itineraries that cover a wide range of destinations, including a 274-night journey through 60 countries.

The Royal Caribbean is the world's second-largest cruise line operator, and its ships are among some of the most popular ones that sail the seas today. A big reason for its worldwide popularity is the fact that most Royal Caribbean cruise ships cater to all ages, making them excellent for family holidays of all budgets. But that's not the case for all: kids' clubs, kiddies' pools, and family-friendly excursions aside, some Royal Caribbean cruise ships are catered more towards adult cruisers. Whether you're looking for a quiet cruising vacay for yourself, are looking for a cruise that won't be packed with the frantic energy of kids , or are simply looking for a holiday that's designed more for your age, these Royal Caribbean cruise ships are excellent for adults.

Our recommendations for the ships to cruise on included in this article are based on research conducted regarding the Royal Caribbean's cruise ships. All cruises selected are based on the amenities, entertainment, excursions, and activities designed for adults. Icon Of The Seas

Cruisecritic rating: 4.5/5.

Icon of the Seas , the first vessel in Royal Caribbean's Icon-Class fleet, is the newest cruise ship that started sailing in January 2024. With a gross tonnage of 250,800 and a total capacity of 10,000 (including guests and crew), this ship is also the largest. From thrills, chills, and wows to nightlife and dining, there is everything that can fill a vacation with memorable experiences. Adults can enjoy and experience several firsts, such as the first swim-up bar at sea and the first suspended infinity pool at sea. Three theaters, an extensive waterpark, live music, forty restaurants and bars, seven swimming pools, a casino, a spa, areas reserved for adults, and a host of other activities are all available. All in all, it is a great cruise experience for adults.

Standard facilities, such as pools, a spa, an arcade, a fitness center with classes, and shopping venues, keep adults entertained and healthy. In addition, there are fifteen dining places, spanning from Starbucks to Japanese cuisine, and unlimited buffets. With nine bars and lounges on board, adult travelers have plenty of locations to enjoy adult beverages. • Destinations: Caribbean, Transatlantic, Mediterranean
  • Popular Cruise: 8-Night Cruise to the Southern Caribbean
  • Route: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Curaçao, Aruba, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)
  • Cost: From $991 per person

Serenade Of The Seas

At first look, there isn't much that differentiates Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas from its fellow Radiance Class ships: floor-to-ceiling windows, scenic landscapes, and quieter onboard entertainment. What makes Serenade Of The Seas more suitable for adults looking to cruise with the Royal Caribbean? Serenade usually sails from Tampa to the Western Caribbean and from Cape Liberty to Quebec, but the mighty ship also embarks on a 274-night journey covering more than 60 countries -- it's hard to imagine anyone but adults onboard this one!

Passengers can either book the Ultimate World Cruise as a whole or book one of the four segments into which the 274-night itinerary is divided.

Allure Of The Seas

The Allure of the Seas has several awards under its belt, including those for the best large cruise ship, the best ship for entertainment, and the best individual ship . This makes Allure one of the best Royal Caribbean ships for cruisers of all ages, including adults. Couples can enjoy romantic date nights on the ship's Central Park, jam with live rock bands at Dazzles, have a tipple at the mobile Rising Tide Bar, and shake a leg at the Latin club Boleros.

  • Destinations: Eastern and Western Caribbean
  • Popular Cruise: 3-Night Cruise to the Bahamas
  • Route: Port Canaveral (Orlando), Nassau, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Port Canaveral (Orlando)

Rhapsody Of The Seas

Tripadvisor rating: 3.5/5.

Launched in 1997, Rhapsody of the Seas is the Royal Caribbean's oldest ship, next to only Grandeur of the Seas, which took sail a year before. Rhapsody is a far cry from the Royal Caribbean's newer, snazzier ships and can only hold roughly 2,000 passengers, which is merely a fraction of the Icon of the Seas , but that may very well be its biggest advantage. The small cruise ship lacks attractions like the gigantic waterslides of the Royal Caribbean's bigger vessels, so it's not a ship where one will find a lot of kids or families. This makes the activities, jam-packed itineraries, excursions, and the general atmosphere onboard Rhapsody more adult-focused.

For a more intense cruise for adults, consider booking Rhapsody's Transatlantic, which sails from Spain to Florida over 14 days, stopping at five ports in between.

Anthem Of The Seas

For adventure-loving adults, there's no Royal Caribbean cruise better than its Quantum Class Anthem of the Seas . Barring a few areas like the SeaPlex Court, where the majority of the family-friendly fun takes place, the rest of the ship's adventure-filled activities are geared more toward adults. Anthem of the Sea passengers can try the skydiving simulator RipCord by iFLY, step 300 feet above the sea on North Star -- the tallest viewing deck to exist on a cruise ship -- and watch robot bartenders shake them a drink at the Bionic Bar.

  • Destinations: Sails between Southampton, England, and Cape Liberty, New Jersey
  • Popular Cruise: 7-Night Cruise to the Bahamas

  • Cost: From $823 per person

Radiance Of The Seas

All Royal Caribbean cruise ships are equipped to entertain passengers of all ages, but if there's one class of ship that has a more adult-friendly vibe to it, it's the Radiance Class. Of its fleet of four Radiance Class ships, the Radiance of the Seas likely gets its name because it features more glass on board than any other Royal Caribbean ship . As the ship slices through the chilly waters of Alaska and makes its way through misty fjords, passengers can gaze at the scenery with a glass of champagne at the Bottomless Galley Brunch, take a dip in the pools of the Solarium, or lie back at the Viking Crown Lounge with floor to ceiling windows offering stunning views of the landscape outside.

  • Destinations: Mostly sails from Florida to the Caribbean in the summers and between Canada and Alaska in the winters
  • Popular Cruise: 5-Night Cruise to the Western Caribbean
  • Route: Tampa, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Tampa

Jewel Of The Seas

Jewel of the Seas sails from one jaw-dropping location to another, offering a more traditional, laid-back cruising experience for its 2,700-odd passengers in between. Passengers can watch musicals, Broadway shows, and tango performances, try their luck at the Casino Royale, take part in wine tastings at 70s-themed disco parties, or sip at one of several bars onboard with live music and entertainment.

  • Destinations: The Northeast itinerary sails between Cape Liberty and Quebec with a focus on New England, Boston, and Maine, whereas the Dutch leg of the cruise starts from Amsterdam and goes all the way up to Iceland and Norway
  • Route: San Juan, Barbados, Port of Spain (Trinidad), Scarborough, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, San Juan
  • Cost: From $952 per person

Ovation Of The Seas

The Quantum Class ship Ovation of the Seas offers three very different experiences at different times of the year, making it an excellent Royal Caribbean ship for thrill-seeking and adventurous adults. The Alaskan leg of the itinerary departs from Seattle and goes through glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and the icy wilderness of the north . When departing from Honolulu, on the other hand, Ovation Of The Seas stops at the volcanoes and rainforests of Hawaii, whereas itineraries starting at Sydney and Singapore are ideal for scuba divers and those hoping for adventures in the sea.

  • Destinations: Sails from Seattle to Alaska, as well as from Honolulu, Sydney, and Singapore
  • Popular Cruise: 10-Night Cruise to Australia & New Zealand
  • Route: Sydney (Australia), Picton, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound, Milford Fjord, Sydney (Australia)

Wonder Of The Seas

Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships are its largest cruise vessels , and as such, they're aimed towards families and kids. But the sheer size of a ship like Wonder of the Seas means that there's so much to do on the cruise, even for adults. With the AquaTheater featuring 30-feet high diving platforms, a Music Hall with live bands, the Karaoke Bar, and an all-new Vue Bar outside the Solarium, entertainment for adults on Wonder of the Seas is better than on any Royal Caribbean ship ever.

  • Popular Cruise: 7-Night Cruise to the Eastern Caribbean
  • Route: Port Canaveral (Orlando), Perfect Day at CocoCay, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Port Canaveral (Orlando)
  • Cost: From $979 per person

Quantum Of The Seas

Tripadvisor rating: 3.0/5.

The best way to weed out a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that's going to be ideal for adults is to look at the average duration of each trip: the longer the trip, the higher the chances that it's going to be a kid-free journey focused on adults. Most of Quantum Of The Seas ' itineraries are seven-day trips to Alaska with longer transpacific journeys that take place over 18 days. Much like Anthem of the Seas, Quantum too has the Ripcord skydiving simulator, a robotic Bionic Bar, and the iconic North Star with 360-degree views of the surroundings.

  • Destinations: Starts from Seattle, from Alaska, and from Brisbane for the South Pacific region
