Genesis Closes 2022 Farewell Tour With Final Concert in London

genesis tour

Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Michael Rutherford at the final concert, March 26, 2022 (Photo: Raph PH; used with permission)

Genesis—Phil Collins, Michael Rutherford, and Tony Banks—closed their farewell tour, named “The Last Domino?,” in London on March 26, 2022. The reunion tour, which included concerts in the U.K. in September 2021 and in North America in the fall, concluded with another 14 concerts in Europe and the U.K. Perhaps this was truly it—and this time it appears that it is, due to Phil Collins’ myriad health issues.

Longtime fans had hoped for a reunion tour with Genesis’ original frontman, Peter Gabriel. When that didn’t happen, it was hoped that Gabriel would join his former bandmates onstage for a song. [That, too, didn’t occur, though he did attend the final concert from the audience and Collins gave him a brief shout out from the stage. “I think Peter’s here tonight… Peter! Peter Gabriel, ladies and gentlemen… let’s hear it. I don’t know where he is. Maybe he’s the one shouting for ‘Supper’s Ready,’ I don’t know,” Collins quipped about a request from the audience for the sprawling track from 1972.]

Due to severe issues with his back, Collins, who turned 71 on January 30, is no longer able to drum. (His percussion playing is limited to the tambourine.) He has also dealt with hip issues in recent years and now sits center stage. The trio were joined on the tour by Collins’ son, Nic, who also filled in for his father behind the kit during his recent solo tours. (The younger Collins was born on April 21, 2001.) Longtime Genesis touring band member, Daryl Stuermer, returned on guitar and bass. Also on hand were Daniel Pearce on backing vocals and percussion, and Patrick Smyth on backing vocals and tambourine.

The band didn’t vary the setlist during the tour. The 23 songs on the final night were virtually identical to the band’s recent U.K. and U.S. tours, that took place from September through December 2021, with a mix of hits and album cuts. And, of course, the spectacular light show that has always been one of the band’s live hallmarks.

At the final show—the third in three nights at The O2—they took to the stage with the house lights up as the audience stood and applauded.

Watch them perform “Behind the Lines” / “Duke’s End” and “Turn It On Again” to open the show

Watch the great instrumentation of “The Cinema Show” and “Afterglow” from a closer perspective

Slightly before the concert’s midway mark, came “That’s All.”

There have been two distinct Genesis fanbases. There are the ones that embraced the band when they were led by Gabriel, as unique a frontman as there was. This edition didn’t have hit singles even in their native England. But that audience loved such early albums as 1971’s Nursery Cryme (with such lengthy LP cuts as “The Musical Box”) and 1973’s Selling England By the Pound , which included their first minor hit, “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe).”

Watch them perform “Firth of Fifth” and “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”

When Gabriel left, Collins took over as the group’s lead vocalist. [It’s said that Collins’ first concert as lead vocalist, in 1976, was 46 years to the day of this final concert.] Soon, the group were composing songs that were embraced by Top 40 programmers, leading to a whole new audience of fans who knew them for their singles, of which there were many.

Watch them close out the main set with their #1 single, “Invisible Touch”

They closed the concert, tour, and career as a band with “Carpet Crawlers” from 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway .

Their management has said the shows weren’t taped or filmed, sadly. Seems weird.

Never say never. They’re one of the few classic bands where all original members are still alive. Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett are viable – Gabriel just put out a new record and is on tour, and Steve Hackett tours relentlessly. 4/5th of Genesis, even without Phil Collins, would still very much be Genesis…

As much as Phil Collins seems to come in for near-relentless stick these days - and as much as Genesis often bear the brunt of that too, often as a result of guilt by association - you couldn’t accuse them of being safe or formulaic; in fact, they helped to pioneer progressive and even art rock, long before Talk Talk were making records like Laughing Stock or Spirit of Eden. In doing so, they pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible in the late sixties and early seventies, and became a huge commercial success in the process. The band’s enduring popularity was attested to during their most recent reformation, in 2007; a twenty-date tour of the UK and Europe saw them packing out stadiums, with a free concert in Rome attracting half a million people to the city’s ancient Circus Maximus. A stunning, intricate stage show finally did some of their classics some justice, years and in some cases decades after many of them were recorded, and proved that the influence that Genesis have had on rock music since has by no means passed the public by; they’re currently officially on hiatus rather than disbanded again, so watch this space - even if Collins claims to have retired from the music business.

Great to be going to see them in Birmingham in December. It’s been far too long. Great also to see that after so many years of inactivity they have to put on double the shows.

Watch Genesis Play the Final Song and Take a Last Bow at Their Farewell Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Genesis formed in early 1967 when two rival bands at the prestigious Charterhouse boarding school in southeast England came together as one. They ended Saturday night at London’s O2 Arena at the final date of the group’s Last Domino reunion tour .

“Tonight is a very special night,” Collins told the crowd early in the evening. “It’s the last stop of our tour. And it’s the last show for Genesis… After tonight we’ve all got to get real jobs.”

There was a small degree of ambiguity about this being the last tour when they announced the reunion back in 2019. They even called it “The Last Domino?” to leave a bit of wiggle room, but Collins made it increasingly clear as the months went by that he had no intention of continuing with the band after the final show in London. To drive the point home further, they removed the question mark from the name of the tour during this last run and started billing it as “The Last Domino!”

Genesis fans from all over the world traveled to London to them wrap things up, and it was a very emotional evening. The setlist, however, was the same as every other show. It’s a mixtures of radio hits like “Invisible Touch” and “That’s All” with lesser-known tunes like “Duchess” and “Home by The Sea” and a few prog-era classics like “I Know What I Like” and “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” Above, see fan-shot video of the grand finale of “Dancing With the Moonlight Knight” and “Carpet Crawlers.”

Phil Collins has severe physical problems that make it hard for him to stand for extended periods of time, but he stood up for a bow with the entire touring band. At the end, the extra musicians stood aside so core members Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Collins could take a final bow. Collins was the last one to depart, moving slowly towards the back stairs with a cane.

The last two songs were from the Peter Gabriel era of the band, and Gabriel himself was in the audience. Here’s a backstage photo of Collins, Gabriel, and their early Seventies road manager Richard McPhail. Gabriel is wearing a laminate giving him “AAA” access to the arena. Unfortunately, he didn’t use it to wander onstage and join the band for the final two songs. It’s not very surprising since Gabriel hasn’t sang a complete Genesis song in public since 1983. He also probably wanted them to have this moment to themselves.

From tonight’s final #Genesis show in London (from left): #PeterGabriel , #PhilCollins , and Richard McPhail (long time friend and tour manager in the ‘70s). If you’ve not read Richard’s book on Genesis, you should. @genesis_band @itspetergabriel @PhilCollinsFeed pic.twitter.com/Zsmo0WMGr1 — World of Genesis (@WorldofGenesis) March 27, 2022

Die-hard fans will never stop hoping a reunion tour with Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett. The fantasy is that they’d do it with Nicholas Collins subbing in for his father on the drums, much like he did on this tour. But it remains a very, very remote possibility. In all likelihood, this show at the O2 Arena was indeed their Last Waltz. It’s a sad day, but at least Gabriel was in the audience to see the end of the band he helped start all those years ago.

Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett rushed to hospital moments before his concert

genesis tour

The Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix was filled with fans awaiting the arrival of Genesis' Steve Hackett on Saturday, all while the guitarist was being rushed to the hospital from backstage.

Hackett shared a photo of himself in a hospital room on Facebook Sunday to accompany a post about what happened.

"I’m so sorry for the scare," he wrote.

"I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital. I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support."

The post was signed, "With warmest wishes, Steve."

The tour was part nostalgia, part new material

The concert was part of a tour that features Hackett revisiting “Foxtrot,” one of several classic albums he made with Genesis, while also showcasing the highlights of “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

In an exclusive interview with The Republic , Hackett talked about the tour.

“I’m keeping the museum doors open in the revisited sense of Genesis,” he says, “but also doing new stuff to keep it vital so I don't entirely pension myself off into a glorious past with all those lovely exhibits, beautiful though they are, but they are of a certain time-warp value.”

Will refunds be issued for the show?

The tour was brought to Phoenix by Danny Zelisko Presents.

DZP rep Kathy “Koz” Perschke said they are attempting to reschedule the performance, noting that Hackett has been released from the hospital. "If it doesn't get rescheduled, obviously, people will be refunded their money. It will go right to the credit card the ticket was purchased on."

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett hospitalized after adverse reaction to meds

F ormer Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett was rushed to a hospital over the weekend as he was preparing to play a since-canceled show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.

The 74-year-old musician apologized "for the scare" in a Sunday Facebook post that included a photo of him in a hospital room hooked up to medical equipment. In the post, Hackett explained his abrupt departure from the Saturday show, which was part of his dual Genesis Revisited 2024 North America and Foxtrot at 50 tours.

"I'd hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication," Hackett wrote. "Consequently, the medics took me to hospital."

The "Supper's Ready" and "Watcher of the Skies" musician said that he's recovering and "glad to be feeling OK," but was upset about his no-show.

"I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support," he wrote.

The Phoenix show will be rescheduled, a spokesperson for the musician confirmed Tuesday to The Times. As of Tuesday, tickets were still on sale through his website for his Wednesday concert in Guadalajara, Mexico, and his Friday appearance in Mexico City. The spokesperson said Hackett "is now recovering and going on to Mexico for the last two shows."

Hackett made his Genesis album debut on 1971's "Nursery Cryme." The progressive rock group, which began in 1966 in England’s prestigious Charthouse school, was founded by Mike Rutherford and a teenage Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel and Anthony Phillips. But the membership changed repeatedly, with drummer-vocalist Phil Collins and Hackett hired as replacements in 1970. Hackett left the band in 1977 because he "needed autonomy" and was replaced by guitarist Daryl Stuermer.

Hackett's latest tour calls back to the classic albums he made with Genesis, including the anniversary of 1972's "Foxtrot" album, and highlights his latest solo album, "The Circus and the Nightwhale," which he released in February.

In the meantime, ticketholders' credit cards will be reimbursed for the tickets and fees through  celebritytheatre.com .

Zelisko adds, "We will send you a notice when we get a new date so that you can have first crack at the tickets for the new show. We are very, very sad and sorry for the trouble caused, which couldn’t be helped due to medical reasons."

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
